Left-arm seamer Chris Wood is one of the most promising young bowlers on Hampshire's books. Born in Basingstoke, he's been part of the county's set-up since his early days in their Under-10s side and won a place in their academy at the age of 17. His career developed very quickly thereafter, and in January 2009 he was part of the England Under-19 side that toured South Africa. He was also selected for Bangladesh Under-19s' visit later that year, and played regularly for Hampshire's Second XI.

He began 2010 on a development contract but injuries to senior players gave him an opportunity and he made his first-class debut against Oxford MCCU in April. He got more chances in limited-overs cricket, and only Danny Briggs took more wickets in Hampshire's triumphant Twenty20 campaign. Wood was also Hampshire's leading wicket-taker in the 40-over competition. His performances earned him a place on Hampshire's trip to the Caribbean in January 2011, and it was in limited-overs cricket that he made most of his First XI appearances that summer.
