Irfan Pathan, the India and Baroda seamer, has said he plans to take full advantage of his recall to the India side to play the final two home ODIs against West Indies, and that he is determined to give it his best as playing for the country means "everything" to him. Irfan has not played for India since 2009. He drew attention this year because of his performances in the Ranji Trophy in which he is the leading wicket-taker in the Elite division, having taken 21 wickets from three games.

"I am really happy," Irfan told ESPNcricinfo. "I am really pleased that I have been given the opportunity and I want to make sure I take full advantage of it; make sure I do my best." Irfan was with this family when he received news of his selection, and said being able to share the news with them made the moment all the more special.

"The dream to play for the country has always been there. When it is fulfilled you feel nothing gets better than this. Having all the luxuries in life - having a big car, big house - nothing comes close to this."

Irfan's last international match for India was during the 2009 World Twenty20; his last Test match was against South Africa in April 2008. He spent most of last season out with a severe back injury and has been working hard on his fitness and bowling action since, in an attempt to get back into the frame for India. He said the toughest part of his rehabilitation was not being able to simply go out there and play but his selection has vindicated all his hard work.

"It makes every second of [the rehab] worthwhile. When you look back and you work hard and you get the chance, you feel lucky, you feel blessed."

Prior to being selected, Irfan had said his current season could be even better than his breakthrough season in 2003-04. He said he is not only feeling fitter than ever, but has learned to use the old ball much better, in addition to his ability to swing the new ball. "If you are getting set batsmen out with the old ball, it is most pleasing," he said.

Having won and lost his place in the side, Irfan isn't taking anything for granted but said it was important to be himself and not try to change too much. "Be yourself. Be confident. Do what's best for you. At the end of the day, you need to go out there and perform."

I sincerly pry that irfan do justice to his talent this time around

Posted by hiltonrock on (December 7, 2011, 17:59 GMT)

Just when India was loosing the 3rd ODI against WI, I taught an Irfan Pathan would be prefect in place of Vinay Kumar, I don't know if Vinay is a son of some cricketer or has an uncle hidden somewhere, Irfan gives the team proper balance. Just like Jadeja and Ashwin do.. I think he should be going to Australia for sure.. We will need more than 7 batsmen in Australia as our top order batting is bound to fail on bouncy track...

Posted by   on (December 7, 2011, 13:56 GMT)

great come back allrounder irfan bhai after a long time, good luck, be yourself n show the best, take as many wicket as posible. Wish u will be selected 4 Aus. tour.

Irfan Pathan is back............... BEST OF LUCK!

FANS its no use agueing about Irfan and Mithun. Both are lion hearted cricketers. Just like PK.Its better India has a pool of pace bowlers - adding Irfan is good. I feel BCCI should make the pool of pacers a wanted lot and treat them professionally. Look AUstralian - Cummins is now injured. Workload and rotation is needed. Zaheer and Ishant are always heavy landers just like Cummins. These bowlers should know their limittations and play to them. Nehra and Sreesanth have now joined the neglected lot.

One of the most prodigious swing bowlers produced by India is now back in action. WI are in for some serious action!

Posted by   on (December 7, 2011, 2:47 GMT)

Certainly you are the best. Some persons will never change but with your performance show them why you are best talent india had ever produced and show them that your place can not be taken by anyone except you in both test and ODI's.Wish you all d Very best.:)

Very glad for Irfan!! back when he had donned Indian colors and in tests, he had rocketed to the top of the bowling charts and was touted to be an all rounder next to only the great Kapil Dev; however, thanks to the 'manic misguidance' of guru Greg, he along with Sehwag, dada, and a few others suffered - extremely happy to see him back - he should make his selection count now - if he can cement his place, in ODIs we will have both a spinning all rounder as well as a medium pace all rounder in Jadeja and Irfan

Great news the only thing that worries me is the amount of talking that is going on. My word of advice to IP, for what it's worth: mate, Sachin said you have a god given gift to swing the ball back in to the right hand batsman, great to see you back, good luck, be yourself - AND DON'T TALK TOO MUCH! ;-)

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 17:36 GMT)

I am a big fan of your swing bowling Irfan...and was hoping since long time that you get at least one chance to step into the big field...I wish you ALL THE BEST for this new start...!!

If Ifran can bowl like He did before It would be one of the best things that can happen to Indian cricket. Goodluck Irfan we have waited for you a long time live up to your potential now.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 14:17 GMT)

Guys Im an Irfan Pathan fan too. Once he has his swing working , he's deadly. But dont you think that he's shooting his mouth off too much. Let him perform on the field and win us accolades like he did in the past instead of mouthing off interviews all and sundry. Are Mithun or Vinay Kumar giving any interviews???

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 13:56 GMT)

Welcome back irfan..Now its ur turn to prove..

Posted by norbe on (December 6, 2011, 13:41 GMT)

Best of luck !You will break all those wrong planning of the selectors . you will acheive

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 13:38 GMT)

Thanks for recognizing the swing star! All the best Irfan!

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 13:31 GMT)

We does want some experience in bowling when we are playing against Australia. Why the selectors donot keep this in mind? How can the inexperienced bowlers such as Umesh yadav, Aaron, Mithun defend Australian batsmen... A genuine swing bowler such as Inrfan is useful in those conditions. Wats the use in selecting him for ODI's against West Indies

Posted by symsun on (December 6, 2011, 12:50 GMT)

Wish gud luck for Irfan to come back permanently to India XI. Make use of these 2 ODIs. Soon u will get ur ticket to Aus series, as Zaheer may return injured after 1 or 2 matches or overs.

Posted by CijoAntony on (December 6, 2011, 12:20 GMT)

Nice selection, though it took long time. Erfan we all indian cricket fans are behind you, we were waiting for your come back since years and we are glad to see convincing perfomance from your side. All the best !!

Good luck irfan now grab ur chances . Now for the last two odis all the bowlers can bat a bit with mithun hitting those big hits and irfan coming in place of yadav and we all know ashwin has a test century

Posted by zuber21886 on (December 6, 2011, 9:17 GMT)

now go there and give out the best what you have, the real talent, the sharp swings!!

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 8:38 GMT)

great that he has been selected.. would have been even better if he was in the teast team for aus tour

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 7:35 GMT)

all irfan fans should pray to get a him chance to get into the final 11 of remaing 2 games..or else he will be out of the team sure....

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 7:10 GMT)

Grab the opportunity Irfan, and come with a bang. Form is temporary and Class is eternal. You have class Irfan, just get your basics right and there is nobody who can think of dropping you from the Indian Team. For sure Zaheer's countdown has begun, and you are a PERFECT REPLACEMENT. Hope the nation agree. Do not read any headlines of your performances Irfan, just think always that whatever you have achieved is just the beginning and there is a long raod ahead. Get set go and reach/break Wasim Akram's bowling records.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 6:48 GMT)

he has to prove himself. for a very long time he is not performing well in international level. but he has ability & talent. now's it's time to show.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 6:44 GMT)

Finally, the king of swing is back, He is one of the best all-rounder of all time, thanks for selectors that they shown some faith in Irfan.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 6:37 GMT)

If oly he plays well!Irfan Pathan should rise to the occasion & prove his might as promised. This ,obviously,is the most suitable occasion for him to play against a team which is threatening to ride over India, the World Champions now.Irfan should be able to put an end to their tremendous progress as compared to their performance in the W/C in India. Those days too the Team was so good that the veteran Vivian Richards challenged India openly saying that India wont be able to beat them & that they were ready to lift the World Cup for a record of 4 th time winners..He was right. But somehow they collapsed during the course of progress of the W/C.no one at that time would have thought theyvwould come to this level of power where even so called Tail Enders started dictating Terms to India.of Course Dhoni's absence felt by everyone more than ever before as this time.Had Dhoni remained as Captain the present crocks could certainly have been avoided. but he needed the present rest badly. Somebody who has a Test match hat-trick (that too in the 1st over of a Test match, vs Pak), 2 ten-wkt hauls in Tests, Test century --- all before turning 25 is a precious talent, and needs to be shown faith and confidence ... not ot mention his strike rate in test matches is 58.8 (at par with Zak's 58 and better than that of Bhajji...

This guy has test match statistics slightly better than Dan Vettori, who is considered one of, if not the, best no. 7's in international cricket. Deserves his place.

But d ques is dt if irfan performs well dn will selectrs regret dere decision of piking up mothun fr d test in australia(m sure dt dey will)

Inshallah irfan will do his best to be in team & i want him to concentrate more on bowling tht's his strength.

Posted by saqskhan on (December 6, 2011, 3:58 GMT)

@ Rumy1...totally agree with you my dear friend, this is how our selectors do the selections..pathetic! Jaffer is one of the best opener, but he was not given enough chance to prove himself..He did very well in WI..anyways there are so many batsmen sitting on the bench and waiting for their turn..so i think Jaffer's career is over now...but Irfan he is still young and almost 7-8 years cricket is still left in him.

Posted by saqskhan on (December 6, 2011, 3:53 GMT)

@ DUKES11....he was one of the best all-rounder..pace is not everything, what abt Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee..they were smashed all round..its not easy to play slow bowling, swing, seam and line and lenght is more important than inaccurate fast bowling. Nowadays all the slow bowlers are successful in cricket and not fast bowlers.

Posted by Suhail98 on (December 6, 2011, 3:43 GMT)

It will be difficult to swing the ball on these dead pitches but still u should grab ur chance n perform in such a way that the selectors will realise their mistake for the OZ tour.I'm also feeling fr Robin uthappa atleast he should be given a chance in ODI's.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 3:33 GMT)

He should not miss this chance and grab it well to make into tri series..

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 3:22 GMT)

Irfan. What if he becomes man of the match in next 2 games. Will he be picked for Australia . He is such a huge asset. Gotta have an all rounder in the team. Imagine with jadeja contributing with bat and ball and then irfan to follow. Hope the selectors see the comments posted by so many cricket crazy fans. We need him for the Australian series. just hoping irfan lives upto the expectations of so many of his fans. Wishing you good luck. Can't wait to see u back in action.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 3:03 GMT)

He must ball in the range of 135-145 kmph to be successful at international level . This range is not super fast(Aussies has plenty of ballers in this range), so please ,no excuse this time :).All the best.

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 3:00 GMT)

Come on irfan...waiting for ur performance in two ODI's . .do well...all the best

he will do it he is a great seamer

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 2:50 GMT)

guys who thinks aus play 140 k bowler regularly?then y india stil nt managed to win series in aus?come on we saw what happen to top aus team when ishant bowled over 140ks..pace with bit of seam movement enough..and dont judge ths guy is nt irfan we used 2 knw..nw he bowls at 120 n dont have skils liye zak or pk..if india wana win ths series they need ishant, yadav n zak/aaron..aus wil nt gift wickets to 120k bowler other than waca..

Posted by   on (December 6, 2011, 2:38 GMT)

Rusted should be tested before being selected for Australia!!! Bring back your aggression that was some how lost since you started playing 20/20!!

Posted by Rahulbose on (December 6, 2011, 0:29 GMT)

Hope he is back in form and fully fit. If he makes it to Aussie tour it will be great for India. Australian batsmen will chew up the inexperienced 140k speedsters being talked about. You need good swing bowling and control to bowl them out.

Posted by Meety on (December 6, 2011, 0:27 GMT)

IMO - Irfan is crucial to Indian success overseas, particularly in Oz. India need to exploit the fact they have one of the best batting line ups ever assembled & move Dhoni (no mug with the bat) to #6, & Irfan to #7. That would allow two spinners & 3 seamers.

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (December 6, 2011, 0:25 GMT)

@Sa manchals, your ball or the ball :-)..... Irfan should have been selected and not Mithun as he is a much better bowler and an allrounder too.

You gotta prove the things[you deserved the flight to Australia] Irfan... your swing is back.... get the ball swinging in 135kms.. there will not be a single human who could stop u from getting selected when Aussies tours India... Just concentrate on your bowling quick and swinging... rest will fall in place...

Posted by Rumy1 on (December 5, 2011, 20:51 GMT)

What if Irfan does well in 2 ODIs. Will they fly him Down under. In that case who will he replace..Mithun? This is how our selectors unfortunately work. I think we are also being hyper over Yadav / Aron hitting above140 kmph. We forget that there are atleast 20 bowlers in Australian state teams who consistently bowl over140 kmph. Aussie batsmen are used to it. 140 kmph with little variation, swing and experienc is fodder for sweet timers like Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Watson.Let's keep focus on Zaheer and Ishant to deliver. And if they can have Irfan that suffices. Another missing name Harbhajan must be put on plane to Australia on Thursday to join Ojha. Ashwin-an avg offie looks sorted out already by lesser mortals like Bravo, Simmons, Rampaul, Russel. Likes of Ponting, Watson, Hussey and Clarke would be watching. We can imagine treatment of Ashwin at their hands.Jaffer must also be drafted in as No.2 opener as Gambhir is woefully out of form since '09. Rohit must play at No.6 in Tests

Posted by ani_cric on (December 5, 2011, 20:44 GMT)

Against this W.indies team sorry its indian team( look like most of them WI players are from Indai origin) . Even the indain women team bowlers can do well. Why Irfan is making too much of scene.

Irfan is looking forward to playing in XI. Hopefully the bizzare selectors will not keep him on bench like the other 3 guys who have been on bench for ever, it appears. After the loss of 3rd ODI, I hope the senior guys like Sehwag & Gambhir as well as Raina are told to carry their share of responsibility.Their consistently careless stroke play is unacceptable.Unfortunately Sehwag & Gambhir are opening the innings for India in the first test Vs. Australia on Dec.26!.Are they ready - if not the alternate opener Rahane may have forgotten what it appears to play in the middle since he has grown so accustomed to the bench. The rotation of players in the squad is crucial. I feel sad for Rahul Sharma who has been on the bench for 6 matches against England + 6 matches against WI! At least release the poor guy to play in the Ranji games. So Irfan, if you are lucky enough to play, all the best to you. Don't put too much pressure on youselves. Do your best - Runs & wkts. will come. Good Luck!.

Irfan should have been picked for Australia test series not WI ODis

Poor guy - feel it for him. he really deserves the test spot - way before both aaron and yadav. Hope he gets his chance after 2 good performances against the Windies in the last two ODIs. Selectors could choose him who is in form, ahead of Zak (who is still returning to form).
