West Indies in India Test Series - 1st Test

India v West Indies

India won by 5 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

All set for the start now. Lots of smiles and bonhomie among the India fielders as Ashwin and Umesh get their Test caps. MS Dhoni seems to have got a hair cut, so the interim from the England ODIs seems to have been spent well. Kieran Powell and Kraigg Brathwaite are the openers, and both did reasonably well in the Test win in Bangladesh. Ishant Sharma has the new ball. I am Nitin Sundar taking you through the action. Three slips and a gully.

It's one of those typical smoggy kind of days in Delhi but there's enough sunshine to keep the light metres away, we are informed. So far, so good.

"It's the India of old. Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Yuvraj mand two spinners. All we need now is for Ganguly to put on his whites," says Sam. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

"Nice tactic by Indians by underplaying Varun Aaron in England ODIs and not playing him in tests today...given the fact that fast Indian bowlers are prone to injuries, so why bother them playing?" Interesting comment that from Sid.

"Each time you think India's pace attack can't get any more raw, it does." You can't stop trying, though, Akshay.

"I'm so tired of seeing Dhoni lose one toss after another. Maybe there should be a big celebration (fire crackers, anyone?) when he wins this elusive toss!" Well of course, Avinash.

Big roar from the crowd as the coin goes up. Not so cheery when it comes down in favour of Darren Sammy. West Indies win the toss and bat first. "India to me is the Mecca of cricket," he says. Kemar Roach, Adrian Barath, Shillingford and Ramdin miss out.

Dhoni says he'd have batted too, on a pitch that will be good for batting and take spin in the latter stages. Yuvraj Singh makes a comeback to the Test side. That means Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane will be on the bench. Varun Aaron and Rahul Sharma also will have to wait for their Test debuts, but we will soon be seeing Umesh Yadav with the new ball. R Ashwin will also debut, while Pragyan Ojha returns after nearly a year.

"Man, it doesn't matter where you come in to bat, the score is still zero." - The hilarious welcome Viv Richards gave Sunil Gavaskar, who dropped himself to No. 4 to escape the fury of the West Indies quicks, only to walk out at 0 for 2 after Malcolm Marshall had removed Gaekwad and Vengsarkar for blobs. It's fair to say things have changed since that day in Chennai, back in 1983. The balance has shifted drastically, this time the Indian batsmen will be the bullies. The closest you will come to seeing a real West Indian quick is in the home broadcaster's studio, where Courtney Walsh, the last of the Mohicans, is one of the panelists. Ian Bishop too, is sadly, confined to the commentary box.

Sharda Ugra likens this series to the meaningless shred of lettuce in a double cheese burger. But, as the diet-conscious will tell you, the lettuce is the most healthy component of the burger, and the Indian side need this series to ensure they are in good health despite the hiding they suffered in England. Here's more in Sid Monga's match preview.

There's always plenty of noise surrounding the Kotla wicket. This is the first Test at the venue since the ODI game that was abandoned midway in end 2009, on account of a substandard strip. The wicket looks better this time; Ian Bishop and Sunil Gavaskar think it will hold out despite the cracks on the surface. Win toss, bat first is almost certainly going to be the routine. At the moment, there's no sign of the Delhi fog either, so we may have a timely start.

0.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, lively delivery to start off proceedings, it landed back of a length well outside off and jagged in as the batsman shouldered arms.

0.2

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, a touch wider, and far too short. Easier leave for Brathwaite. Nice carry on these first two balls.

0.3

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, gets closer to off stump, and err ... the ball doesn't carry to Dhoni this time. Ishant is still keeping it short of a length.

0.4

Sharma to Brathwaite, 1 run, West Indies are away. Brathwaite pushes calmly from the crease into the covers and they take the single.

0.5

Sharma to Powell, FOUR, leading edge, but safe. Ishant's natural curve into the right hander, opens up the left-handed Powell as it lands on leg and swerves away. The edge kept low and flew away between third slip and gully.

0.6

Sharma to Powell, FOUR, another edge, another four through the slip-gully gap. Ishant is again fuller to the left hander, lands the ball on leg and gets it to angle across. Powell gropes tentatively from the crease and the ball dribbles away fast.

End of over 1 (9 runs) West Indies 9/0
KOA Powell    8* (2b 2x4)      I Sharma    1-0-9-0
KC Brathwaite    1* (4b)

Umesh Yadav has the ball now. Big moment for the young man.

1.1

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, whips the first ball in, lands back of a length on middle and comes in towards the body. Brathwaite looks a little out of sorts as he shuffles across, but defends well to the leg side.

1.2

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, again, moves in in towards Brathwaite, who moves across and defends to the leg side.

1.3

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, shifts to a yard outside off, and he's operating at a fair clip here. Brathwaite stays on the crease and steers towards gully.

1.4

Yadav to Brathwaite, 2 runs, nicely played, and more evidence that this track is fast asleep. Brathwaite rides the bounce well as Umesh lands this back of a length outside off and punches it through point. The ball didn't come on quickly enough for him to time the shot too well, and the outfield isn't grease lightning either.

1.5

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, lands on the seam and shapes into Brathwaite, who again gets too far across and then defends in awry fashion.

1.6

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, solidly behind the last ball as he defended it down the track from middle stump line. Good start from Umesh.

End of over 2 (2 runs) West Indies 11/0
KC Brathwaite    3* (10b)      UT Yadav    1-0-2-0
KOA Powell    8* (2b 2x4)      I Sharma    1-0-9-0

2.1

Sharma to Powell, no run, strangely confident appeal for lbw from Ishant, who is still over the stumps to the left hander. Landed a good half foot outside leg stump and hit the batsman on the crease. Umpire Tucker says no.

2.2

Sharma to Powell, no run, goes fuller and angles this across the left hander. The ball scoots along - a typical rat ball - to Dhoni. Never really came up after bouncing.

2.3

Sharma to Powell, no run, Powell gets forward and defends a good length ball on off stump into the off side.

"The sacrifices Caribbean people must make to support their team! An all-nighter is set here hoping to see a mammoth total by the Windies!" Good evening, Niala Baboolal!

2.4

Sharma to Powell, no run, back of a length on middle and off, defended solidly to the leg side.

2.5

Sharma to Powell, 1 run, Ishant is on the pads this time, Powell glances him behind square for a single.

2.6

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Ishant finishes with a pacy ball around off stump, Brathwaite defends after covering the line.

End of over 3 (1 run) West Indies 12/0
KC Brathwaite    3* (11b)      I Sharma    2-0-10-0
KOA Powell    9* (7b 2x4)      UT Yadav    1-0-2-0

"Um, what culture is 'Kraigg' from?" I'll let more knowledgeable people take that question from Scott.

3.1

Yadav to Powell, no run, Umesh loses the line the first time he bowls at the left-hander. Sprayed wide of off stump, too full from over the stumps.

3.2

Yadav to Powell, no run, much better, whangs this in short of a length, but the ball balloons up like a tennis ball that is strongly tethered to the turf. Powell drops the wrists easily.

3.3

Yadav to Powell, no run, 140 kph, over-pitched too far outside off. The ball doesn't come up at all, might as well just do away with the slips. Dhoni gets the pads in the way and the ball runs away towards the slips.

3.4

Yadav to Powell, no run, on a length once again well outside off, easy leave for Powell.

"@ Niala : well when India goes to the West Indies we also have to wake up all night only to see the Indian team having one of the best batting line ups giving up a chase of 80 runs in 15 overs" Adnan has not forgotten the Dominica disaster.

3.5

Yadav to Powell, no run, another leave outside off, Powell shoulders arms as Umesh keeps it short of driving length.

3.6

Yadav to Powell, no run, hits the 90 mph mark (over 144 kph) with the last ball, a quick short ball that hustles Powell into rising on the toes and defending to the off side. Impressive pace from Umesh, but he'll have to get the ball to land on the seam more often.

End of over 4 (maiden) West Indies 12/0
KOA Powell    9* (13b 2x4)      UT Yadav    2-1-2-0
KC Brathwaite    3* (11b)      I Sharma    2-0-10-0

4.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Ishant goes very full and wide of off stump, Brathwaite leaves once again.

4.2

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, nearly 90 mph from Ishant now, nips in off the seam and forces Brathwaite into a slightly out of control heave-drive. It goes off the inner edge to the leg side.

4.3

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, crouches low, shuffles across to off stump and lets an indipper go through to the keeper.

"Can some body explain why leg side deliveries can't be given lbw even though it hits in line and goes on to hit stupms. I would like to know the logic behind the law." I can't explain the logic Praveen, but it is a damn good law, methinks.

4.4

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Ishant probes away outside off, Brathwaite again watches it through to Dhoni.

4.5

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, 138 kph, far too short to trouble someone like Brathwaite, who is a compulsive back-footer if there ever was one. Another leave after shuffling across.

4.6

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, ends the over with a similar ball angling in from wide of off stump, and Brathwaite again lets it go to MSD.

End of over 5 (maiden) West Indies 12/0
KC Brathwaite    3* (17b)      I Sharma    3-1-10-0
KOA Powell    9* (13b 2x4)      UT Yadav    2-1-2-0

"Yes Niala, We Caribbean people are Loong suffering when it comes to our cricket. Suffering being the operable word. Scott Kraigg is from Barbados," says Monty Chester.

5.1

Yadav to Powell, no run

5.2

Yadav to Powell, no run, full length delivery outside off, Powell isn't in any mood to play at these. These openers showed tremendous patience in Bangladesh. Were the Indian seamers watching?

5.3

Yadav to Powell, no run, short of a length outside off, another easy leave since it is far too wide.

"Its because cricket is a side-on game, and balls pitching outside leg-stump are considered to pitch on the batsman's "blind" side." Trust Kartikeya Date to provide a 'cricketing view'.

5.4

Yadav to Powell, no run, Powell drags the bat inside the line after looking to cover the line. This one too doesn't force him to play.

5.5

Yadav to Powell, no run, Powell gets the front foot across but shoulders arms again, as Umesh slants it away.

5.6

Yadav to Powell, no run, a good ball to end the over, at least made Powell think about playing it before leaving. Decent carry too, it must have hit a stray patch of adrenaline on this pitch.

End of over 6 (maiden) West Indies 12/0
KOA Powell    9* (19b 2x4)      UT Yadav    3-2-2-0
KC Brathwaite    3* (17b)      I Sharma    3-1-10-0

6.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Ishant makes Brathwaite play, full ball angling in at pace, but it is driven solidly off the front foot.

6.2

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, 86 mph, angled in at off the seam, Brathwaite is watchful as he defends to the off side.

6.3

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, over-pitched at 86 mph, Brathwaite is on the move as he drives it off the toe of the bat to the leg side.

Signs of a slow pitch, No. 42. Silly mid-off in place now.

6.4

Sharma to Brathwaite, (no ball) 1 run, Ishant is on a length, Brathwaite opens the face and guides towards gully for a single. Ishant's over-stepped as well.

6.4

Sharma to Powell, no run, In his mind, Ishant is still bowling at a right hander. Very short, miles wide of leg stump, a wide in any other format.

6.5

Sharma to Powell, no run, once again Ishant slants one into Powell's pads after landing the ball well outside leg. This even hit him outside leg as he stayed back, and struck him quite high on the pad too.

6.6

Sharma to Powell, FOUR, nicely played. Short and pacy from Ishant. angling across and forcing Powell to play. He waited beside the line, and opened the face to guide it through point and the ball fairly bounds away to the fence.

End of over 7 (6 runs) West Indies 18/0
KOA Powell    13* (22b 3x4)      I Sharma    4-1-16-0
KC Brathwaite    4* (21b)      UT Yadav    3-2-2-0

7.1

Yadav to Brathwaite, FOUR, Umesh gets one to move off the seam. It angled in towards off, landed on a good length and shaped away. Brathwaite was squared up and proffered soft hands to let the edge roll down and through the cordon for four.

7.2

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, good length ball, Brathwaite should be looking to get well forward to these lengths. He is still reluctant to come forward as he check-drives to mid-off.

7.3

Yadav to Brathwaite, no run, back of a length outside off, Brathwaite lets it go without much concern.

7.4

Yadav to Brathwaite, 1 run, on the pads, Brathwaite shuffles into line and deflects it square for a single.

7.5

Yadav to Powell, no run, that ball never went over knee-height from the moment it landed on a full length outside off. What a strip for the first Test of a season!

Round the stumps now.

7.6

Yadav to Powell, no run, diving save at gully, surprisingly from Ishant Sharma, whose got to be among the lesser gifted athletes manning that position. Full and too wide outside off, Powell cracks it away square and Ishant intervenes.

End of over 8 (5 runs) West Indies 23/0
KOA Powell    13* (24b 3x4)      UT Yadav    4-2-7-0
KC Brathwaite    9* (25b 1x4)      I Sharma    4-1-16-0

8.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, 1 run, shaping in from short of a length, worked tentatively through square leg for a single.

8.2

Sharma to Powell, no run, goes full to the left-hander, Powell looks smooth in his movements as he presses forward and defends to cover.

"The combined age of Braithwaite and Powell is just 40 years 219 days. Some cricketers have been older than this. Anyone know a younger pair of openers?" I saw one last week, Scott. When these two guys opened against Bangladesh.

8.3

Sharma to Powell, no run, Powell lets another one go through outside off as Ishant works away on a length.

8.4

Sharma to Powell, no run, lands on off, shapes away as Powell leans out and allows it to go through to the keeper.

8.5

Sharma to Powell, 1 run, full length ball at 84 mph, Powell times the square drive particularly well and gets a single. Umes Yadav is at point now. I hear Yuvraj Singh is at fine leg. Interesting choices, those.

8.6

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, ends the over with a length ball shaping in at 85 mph, Brathwaite defends solidly to the off side of the pitch.

End of over 9 (2 runs) West Indies 25/0
KC Brathwaite    10* (27b 1x4)      I Sharma    5-1-18-0
KOA Powell    14* (28b 3x4)      UT Yadav    4-2-7-0

Spin is in quite early. 45 minutes into the Test, Pragyan Ojha comes on. I'd have expected Ashwin to get a go first, since he is a new-ball specialist in the shorter forms of the game. Slip, short leg and silly mid-on, both a touch wide.

9.1

Ojha to Powell, no run, too short and wide outside off from over the stumps, cut well but straight to point.

9.2

Ojha to Powell, no run, stays on the back foot and covers the line as the ball hints at turning in. Defended to the off side.

9.3

Ojha to Powell, no run, gets a touch forward and defends to mid-off.

9.4

Ojha to Powell, no run, a touch of drift from off stump line, Powell gets a touch too far across and defends to the leg side.

9.5

Ojha to Powell, no run, full ball outside off, Powell remains defensive.

9.6

Ojha to Powell, no run, dropped by the bowler! That should have been taken at this level. Powell dances out of the crease and drives it back hard to the right of the bowler. Ojha didn't have too much time to react, but did well to get the right hands across, the left hand came through a little more slowly. The ball did not stay in, though, he is in despair as it goes down.

End of over 10 (maiden) West Indies 25/0

10.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, full length from Ishant, Brathwaite defends to the leg side.

10.2

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run

10.3

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Brathwaite shuffles across conscious of the fielder at silly mid-on, perhaps. Defends a length ball from off stump to the leg side.

10.4

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, another full ball, Brathwaite fairly prances across to cover the line and defends to mid-off.

10.5

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, bottom edge as Brathwaite plays over the cut, but the ball sleep-walks through much lower than he anticipated. It doesn't carry to Dhoni, in fact it lands well short of him.

10.6

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, Ishant plugs the last ball on a length outside off, and Brathwaite leaves.

End of over 11 (maiden) West Indies 25/0
KC Brathwaite    10* (33b 1x4)      I Sharma    6-2-18-0
KOA Powell    14* (34b 3x4)      PP Ojha    1-1-0-0

Interesting math from Imran: "Well talking about combined age. The combined age of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman is 114 years 135 Days. The combined age of Braithwaite and Powell is just 1 Year 285 days more than Rahul Dravid's age alone."

11.1

Ojha to Powell, no run, tossed up outside off from round the stumps now, Powell leans forward to smother.

11.2

Ojha to Powell, no run, straightens from off stump line, Powell again leans out to block. Not much spin on offer yet.

11.3

Ojha to Powell, no run, back of a length, Powell plays back as he covers the line and blocks.

Ojha was fairly prolific in the county scene recently. West Indies have faced almost every variety of left-arm spin on their recent tour of Bangladesh.

11.4

Ojha to Powell, no run, angled across on a length, Powell stays back and defends.

11.5

Ojha to Powell, no run, full ball, leans forward and defends again.

11.6

Ojha to Powell, OUT, impressive spin out of nowhere, and Powell is gone. Tossed up on off stump from round the stumps. The previous balls had straightened down the line, but this one burst in sharply. Powell was pressing forward with bat outside the line. It didn't matter if he was offering a shot, since the ball hit him in front of off and middle. Would have taken out leg stump. Umpire Dharmasena reckons so, in any case, and it seems to be a fair decision. Mind you, no UDRS in this series.

Ishant continues. Kirk Edwards is the new man in, and he's in prime form.

12.1

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, full delivery outside off, Brathwaite doesn't offer a shot.

12.2

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, goes super full once again, he hasn't moved a single ball away from the right hander all day. Brathwaite works it cautiously off the toes to mid-on.

12.3

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, wider of off stump this time, Brathwaite lets it go to the keeper.

12.4

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, full length ball outside off, Brathwaite is diffident to come forward again as he defends to the off side.

12.5

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, props the front foot outside the line of off this time and defends a length ball into the off side.

12.6

Sharma to Brathwaite, no run, short of a length, and the polite suggestion of movement away from the batsman this time. Brathwaite shoulders arms.

13.3

Ojha to KA Edwards, no run, Kirk opens the face as he defends a full ball to the off side.

13.4

Ojha to KA Edwards, no run, Ojha tries to spin this across the face, but it takes the outer half and heads towards point.

13.5

Ojha to KA Edwards, no run, tossed up on middle and leg, defended off the front foot.

13.6

Ojha to KA Edwards, no run, straightens from the leg stump line, Kirk is watchful as he presses forward. Three maidens for Ojha, and it is drinks at the Kotla.

"Never mind their age, Ishant Sharma has played almost twice as many tests (39) as the Windies' Top 4 combined! (4, 3, 3, 10 = 20)," points out Kaspar Larsen. And for all that, Ishant is quite green himself.

14.2

Ashwin to Brathwaite, no run, impressive turn and bounce from outside off, it breaks into Brathwaite who hurriedly defends close to the body.

14.3

Ashwin to Brathwaite, no run, too short this time, Brathwaite cuts softly to point.

14.4

Ashwin to Brathwaite, no run, ouch. Good think VVS is wearing a shin pad at silly point. Tossed up outside off, and driven into his pads.

14.5

Ashwin to Brathwaite, no run, worked with the wrists from outside off to mid on.

15.5

16.3

Ashwin to KA Edwards, no run, there, he's searching for the bat-pad gap with the spin, and Edwards nearly obliges by driving away from the body. Inside edge goes towards the leg side.

18.3

Ashwin to KA Edwards, no run, Kirk assiduously covers the line and nudges a length ball jumping up extra as it turns, to the leg side.

18.4

Ashwin to KA Edwards, no run, draws him forward and gets the insidew edge onto the pad, but it evades short leg easily. I do believe the fielder is standing at least a metre too deep.

Silly mid-on is in place too.

18.5

Ashwin to KA Edwards, 1 run, works a full ball with the turn to mid-on for one.

"The reason for attendance is simple. Me and my wife started from home at 8.00 on a winter morning (that too on a Sunday). Spend 100 bucks on Auto. Reach here a 8.30 to find out that there is no ticket counter at the stadium (because it is Sunday). Went to a near by bank branch after roaming for an hour. After jostling for an hour got the tkts and enter the stadium at 10.30. On internet only season tickets are available. There were a lot of people who went back including kids. We persisted but nearly gave up." Ah, Manish. Commiserations. Shame on the organisers, this is pathetic.

31.4

Sharma to Bravo, no run, full length ball outside off, Bravo lets it go to the keeper.

31.5

Sharma to Bravo, no run, back of a length at a similar line, and Brathwaite shoulders arms as he presses across.

Kartikeya responds with this, the final word on the outside-leg-not-out lbw law: "@Prashant - I don't see your point. The Umpire is not side-on. The point about the batsman being side-on is that as a result the field is then not symmetrical. This is also reflected in the field placings - no more than two fielders are allowed behind square on the leg side. The LBW rule used to be even stricter in an earlier era. Then it was required that the ball should pitch within the width of the stumps and hit the pads within the width of the stumps in order for the LBW appeal to be considered legitimate. The rule was later relaxed to allow balls pitching outside off stump to count, as long as the impact was within the width of the stumps."

31.6

Sharma to Bravo, FOUR, a gem of a stroke to bring up lunch. Ishant lands it on a length on off stump, Bravo just meets it, scowling as he steps forward and presents the full face, and the ball pings away crisply to roll along to the long-on fence.

Three cheers to the marketing geniuses who choose not to sell tickets worth over Rs. 100 to people who want to buy them. 32.5

Ashwin to Bravo, OUT, Ashwin strikes timber for his first wicket in Tests. Quick offbreak, angled in from round the stumps, hurries off the turf and straightens down the line. Should Bravo have been on the front foot? He stays back and tries to cut though there is no room to work with. He misses and the stumps are in a mess. That was a really poor shot, he was cutting from the leg stump line!

Ashwin to Chanderpaul, no run, too short to Chanders to end the over, and he cuts it straight to point.

Ashwin: "Are you telling me Sachin is going to score 100th ton in front of... no one? Give the man a break and send him to aus! I'll be there on boxing day to celebrate the milestone!" I'm sure the size of the crowd is one of the things in the man's mind.
