West Indies in India ODI Series - 3rd ODI

India v West Indies

West Indies won by 16 runs

2.25pm Ratty from St Kitts and Nevis sends an all-caps mails demanding Kieran Powell's inclusion.

Joy Bajaj: "WI need to think out of the box. Sammy must send Andre Russell in at no. 3 as a surprise pinch-hitter. He's a useful batsman who won't get to contribute much at no. 8." Not a bad idea.

And see whether this Queensland v Victoria scorecard from the Shield game today remind you of any other game.

2.20pm Arun Shankar: "Is playing Abhimanyu Mithun a sign of his inclusion in the tour to Australia? Has the selectors played a hand in today's XI." 'We'll know in a few hours, Arun.

Rahul Paharia: "West Indies now have seven players who are capable of bowling 10 overs each. Very very strange that they decide to drop a batsman to bring in a new bowler."

"Are we open to discussing the inclusion of Agarkar as a replacement for PK?" Prat and others who sent in similar mails - NO.

Puneet Barjatya: "@kanishka , forget ramdin at 6 !! pollard is at 5 , thinner than paper this batting line-up."

2.10pm Qasim Anwar: "Why is Aaron out? Thought he was doing good." Sehwag says they wanted to give him a break, and the management probably wanted to give Mithun a game as well.

Ranjit: "Why is Sehwag obsessed with bowling first? Why why why??" Sehwag might reply, "It's not me, it's dew" - incidentally the title of an old Aakash Chopra article on dealing with dew.

Kanishka: "West Indies look very thin on batting..Ramdin at 6!! They are kidding themselves." Fear not, when Rampaul is at hand. But, on a more serious note, their top-order needs to click today. Ramdin at No. 6 and Sammy at 7 doesn't inspire much confidence.

2.00pm Toss Sehwag spins it, and he wins the toss. A huge roar from the stands, India will bowl. He cites the dew as one of the reasons for choosing to chase. One change for India: Abhimanyu Mithun in for Varun Aaron.

Sammy says it's about seizing the moment after creating opportunities to go on top. Much talked-about mystery spinner Sunil Narine will make his debut. For more about him, read this story from a couple of months ago, when Narine was bamboozling batsmen in the Champions League T20.

West Indies have included Narine at the expense of opener Adrian Barath. Interesting move that.

1.55pm West Indies have some decisions to make. How can they fit in a spinner in their line-up, surely they won't go in again with Marlon Samuels as their lone tweaker.

Talking of decisions, India's selectors will pick the replacement for the injured Praveen Kumar for the Australia Tests. Who will they go for? Kanishkaa Balachandran looks at the contenders.

1.50pm Large crowds turned up for the first two one-dayers but today's match is at one of the bigger cricket centres in India, and it is blazing hot. Will the fans turn up? Read Tariq Engineer's story on crowds in the series so far.

Parthiv Patel will finally get a chance to play an ODI at his hometown today, but this is probably his last chance. One more failure and he may not make the cut for the remainder of the series.

Sunil Gavaskar says the pitch is a batting beauty, and that he wouldn't be surprised if 600 runs are scored today.

1.40pm It's game three of the one-day series between India and West Indies. Can the visitors finally win a match on this tour? Defeat today in Ahmedabad will give India their 12th straight one-day home win.

There's still 20 minutes to go for the toss, time you could spend reading the preview to the game, Tony Cozier's thoughts on the series and Sidharth Monga's take on the race between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the only spot remaining in the Test middle order.

anand MS: "We're reading too much into Mithun's inclusion on the 11 as a possible pre-cursor to him being picked to go to Australia. Poor fellow Vinay Kumar has been in the playing 11 throughout and nobody is talking about his chances! But I reckon it'll be Irfan. More as a back-up for Zak than a PK replacement." David Mammen sends in a mail I completely agree with: "People need to understand that wicket keepers are in the side predominantly for their batting! Stop calling for Uthappa and Rayadu to keep wickets for the national side. They are called part time wicket keepers. They dont even keep wickets for the state side. Just because they kept wickets in the IPL it doesnt make them good wicket keepers. If you analyse their wicket keeping performance in the 20 overs they make too many mistakes. Example of that is Rayadu, last champions league t20"

Sumith: "Dinesh Kartik !! The man deserves a slot in the team. He has more experience than any of the keepers and is a solid bat. I wonder why he's ran out of contention !" He did get quite a few chances, and never did enough to become a permanent member of the side.

Yadav to Pollard, 1 run, full and well outside off, helped towards point for a single to end the over

Sherry: "Dan, there is certainly a method to the WI team composition madness. They acknowledge there isn't much they can do about their batting - and in any case they have a batter in ampaul whom the Indians couldn't dismiss last time. They've invested in their strength - bowling - rather. Mark these words - if WI crosses 215 today, they're gonna be a handful "

42.3

Jadeja to Pollard, 1 run, length ball on offstump, poked towards cover for a single

42.5

Jadeja to Ramdin, 1 run, length ball angling into the pads, nudged towards square leg

42.6

Jadeja to Pollard, no run, flat and short, heading for middle, Pollard stretches his giant leg forward and shows off a tight front-foot defense

43.2

Yadav to Ramdin, 1 run, length ball closer to the stumps, pushed towards point for only a single, 50 stand comes up, partnerships haven't been the problem for them, it's the run-rate

43.3

Yadav to Pollard, FOUR, bangs in the bouncer, Pollard goes for the pull, top-edge well over the keeper, bounces once before going for four

43.4

Yadav to Pollard, 1 run, a yorker just outside off, nicely negotiated by Pollard, guides it down to third man for a single

43.5

Yadav to Ramdin, OUT, third catch for Parthiv, Ramdin is gone, Umesh rolls the fingers to take off the pace, again it is a little wide outside off, Ramdin looks to slash it through the off, nicks it to Parthiv

May not be too bad this wicket for West Indies. Gives time for either Andre Russell or Darren Sammy to get a few sixes away

43.6

Yadav to Russell, FOUR, short of length ball outside off, Umesh gets the outside edge, would have been gobbled up if there was a first slip, there isn't one, and Russell is off the mark with a boundary, 14 off the over

Vinay Kumar has shown a tendency to get hit late in the innings after bowling well with the new ball. How will he fare today?

44.1

Vinay Kumar to Pollard, no run, almost a yorker, just outside off, Pollard opens the face but can't get bat on ball, through to the keeper

Dan: "@Sherry, while I agree its a decent bowling attack, its not as good as any of SA, Aus or Eng's...yet none of those teams would expect to win with a total of less than 250. Windies have just one extra bowler today, yet they couldnt defend 270 last game (not 215). If you cant score 275+ in India regularly it doesnt matter how good your bowling attack is, you will not win regularly. India to win by 5 wickets today with at least 8 overs to spare"

44.2

Vinay Kumar to Pollard, OUT, Jadeja has pulled off a blinder here!, the end of Pollard, it was a poor delivery from Vinay, a length hit-me delivery, Pollard hits it, but not flat enough to clear the ropes, it goes miles high, and then drops towards the deep extra cover boundary, Ravindra Jadeja runs towards it from long-off, had plenty of ground to make but manages to cover it and latches on to it, tumbling over as he completes the catch, outstanding effort that

KA Pollard c Jadeja b Vinay Kumar 29 (44m 32b 2x4 1x6) SR: 90.62

44.3

Vinay Kumar to Russell, no run, blocked off the front foot by Russell

44.5

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, FOUR, a low full toss is clouted over cover for four, Sammy is off the mark

44.6

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, 1 run, sweeper cover has to do the fielding after Sammy punches the ball

Ashwin round the wicket

45.1

Ashwin to Sammy, 1 run, short of length ball, heading outside off, slapped towards midwicket

45.2

Ashwin to Russell, FOUR, plenty of width there, Russell slaps it over backward point for four, that's the first boundary off Ashwin's bowling today

45.3

Ashwin to Russell, 1 run, looks to clear deep midwicket here, but the big hit doesn't go all the way, lands short of the fielder

45.4

Ashwin to Sammy, 1 run, the paddle-sweep goes awry, the ball trickles towards cover instead as Sammy attempts the shot too early

45.5

Ashwin to Russell, no run, full ball just outside off, Russell is beaten as he looks to drive

45.6

Ashwin to Russell, 1 run, a muscular sweep as Ashwin's final delivery is on the leg stump

46.1

Vinay Kumar to Russell, 1 run, short of length ball angling in, inside-edged on to his right knee by Russell, who is hobbling as takes the single, just above the knee actually

46.2

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, FOUR, crisp strike that, brings up the 200, a full toss outside off, Sammy powers it to the deep extra cover boundary

46.3

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, 1 run, muscles this down the ground, towards long-off

46.4

Vinay Kumar to Russell, 1 wide, comic cricket this! Russell jumps across the crease very very early and then goes back to his normal stance, Vinay tries to bowl it wide of offstump but the attempted slower ball goes completely wrong, barely on the pitch as it bounces through to the keeper

46.4

Vinay Kumar to Russell, 1 run, top fielding from Rohit at long-on, clouted down the ground by Russell, plenty of power on that shot

46.5

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, FOUR, slow and wide outside off, Sammy waits on it and steers the ball to the deep backward point boundary, a productive over this, third man can't come across to stop that

46.6

Vinay Kumar to Sammy, 1 run, guides the final ball of the over to third man for a single

Umesh is back

47.1

Yadav to Sammy, no run, length ball that is sweetly timed by Sammy, can't beat Gambhir at extra cover though

Santhosh: "I think this wicket keeper situation is something for the selectors to think about seriously. Dhoni is not going to be there forever and its important to groom someone to replace him. The current replacements look sub-standard to say the least."

47.2

Yadav to Sammy, 1 run, slower ball, short of length ball outside off, Sammy is forced to delay his shot, slaps it to backward point would have been tight if there was a direct hit at the keeper's end, the throw from Rohit is wide though

47.3

Yadav to Russell, 1 run, full ball on the pads, chipped towards short midwicket

47.4

Yadav to Sammy, 1 run, a high full toss, too high? no say the umpire, Sammy adjusts to that, slams it towards deep midwicket for a single, it was lower than the waist

47.5

Yadav to Russell, no run, another slower ball from Yadav, short of length and outside off, Russell goes for the powerful cut but misses

47.6

Yadav to Russell, SIX, Russell finally gets hold of one, and boy can he hit them, are the IPL scouts watching? he murders this length ball into the stands beyond wide long-on, nice way to end the over for WI

Last five overs have yielded 50 runs

End of over 48 (9 runs) West Indies 217/5 (RR: 4.52)

Mithun to bowl, this will be a challenge for him

48.1

Mithun to Sammy, 1 wide, he starts with a wild delivery well outside off

48.1

Mithun to Sammy, FOUR, how did Sammy manage to get that away for four, it was full and very very wide, somehow Sammy didn't just reach it, he managed to get enough power on it to chop it past deep backward point for four

48.2

Mithun to Sammy, FOUR, another length ball, another swat, another boundary, wide of long-on this time, not the best length from Mithun here

48.3

Mithun to Sammy, no run, Sammy taking guard outside off, he wanted to launch this dot ball out of the park, doesn't connect and the ball goes through to the keeper

48.4

Mithun to Sammy, SIX, what a shot that is from Sammy! outstanding, again Mithun puts it on a length, width as well, pummelled over cover for six, this is an incredible hit from Sammy

48.5

Mithun to Sammy, SIX, and another one, West Indies building up a decent total here, a full toss on the pads, clubbed over midwicket for six more, lost count of the number of runs this over

48.6

Mithun to Sammy, 2 runs, another swing, gets the ball to midwicket, should have only been a single, Kohli fields and throws at the non-striker's end, giving away an overthrow

23 off that over, are the selectors watching? and will this influence their Australia decision?

End of over 49 (23 runs) West Indies 240/5 (RR: 4.89)

Umesh to bowl the final over

49.1

Yadav to Russell, FOUR, brilliant hit this, Umesh bowls a full delivery, Russell can't get under it but somehow manages to get enough power as he whacks that dead straight, long-on and long-off converge but not quick enough to stop the ball

49.2

Yadav to Russell, FOUR, four more, carnage here, and this was a poor delivery, a nice full toss on leg stump, clubbed past long-on for four

49.3

Yadav to Russell, 2 runs, gets the front leg out of the way and swings hard at it, a top edge and that swirls over the infield and towards deep backward point

49.4

Yadav to Russell, SIX, ten overs ago we were headed for a low-scoring one-sided match, not anymore, thrashes this one towards the commentary box, straight and powerful hit

49.5

Yadav to Russell, 2 runs, not a boundary this time, another muscular hit down the ground, Umesh gets a bott in the way, the ball ricochets toward mid-on, Russell scampers through for two

49.6

Yadav to Russell, 2 runs, a near yorker to finish, the best delivery he's bowled this over, slapped towards midwicket for two

Last seven overs 93 runs. West Indies have reached 260, a score which looked way out of their reach not too long ago. Well, that was breathtaking stuff from Sammy and Russell, exposing what has traditionally been a problem for India - the death overs.

Every batsman except Simmons got a start for West Indies, but they couldn't get out of first gear for much of the innings. Even during the batting Powerplay they couldn't get going, getting only 19 runs in those five overs. Then their chances dimmed further as they lost both their set batsmen, Ramdin and Pollard, before the Sammy-Russell show. The inexperience of the Indian quicks showed, offering too many length deliveries, or flinging in full tosses.

260 is a decent total, but is it enough? The Indian chase starts around 6.30pm. See you then.
