West Indies tour of India, 4th ODI: India v West Indies at Indore, Dec 8, 2011
India won by 153 runs
8 December 2011 - day/night match (50-over match)

Gautam Gambhir is back to opening the innings. Back with his opening partner Virender Sehwag. It looks to me the right decision. They have to open in Australia too, and don't have runs under their belts. So best to bat at your natural position. Here's Roach to GG

2pm David Boon takes seemingly a couple of minutes before ascertaining India have won the toss. Virender Sehwag says they will bat. Darren Sammy is a little apologetic for not shaking Sehwag's hand after the toss. He says he was shocked at losing yet another toss. India have made one change, bringing in Rahul Sharma for Umesh Yadav, who must reach Australia some time during this time. West Indies have a forced change too: the injured Darren Bravo is out, and Kieran Powell is in

India have chosen a debutant legspinner - which by the way makes it two R Sharmas in the side - ahead of Irfan Pathan even though dew is expected later in the night. Not many have seen Irfan bowl in Ranji Trophy this year, where he has taken 21 wickets in four matches to force his way back into reckoning. We really don't know if he has improved drastically - numbers say only so much. Was the team management not impressed with what it saw? Or is the pitch such that it merits a spinner replacing a quick?

1.40pm Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the fourth ODI between India and West Indies. India lead the series 2-1, all three matches have been close, and West Indies would love to keep the rubber alive for the final game. Toss in 20 minutes

Vineeshkala: "This is Sehwag's highest score as captain, previous best was 44 against SL"

Round the wicket to Gambhir

17.5

Roach to Gambhir, no run, Run-out chance. GG wants a single after leaving the ball on the pitch. Sehwag is not interested. GG has to go back. A charging Roach has to go around Gambhir and is caught in a bit of a tangle. Can't field the ball, otherwise GG was struggling. Sammy appeals for obstruction of the field. A very polite, hope-against-hope query. Replays show that Gambhir did alter his course a little, by a foot maybe. Hard to tell, but the umpires not interested anyway

17.6

Roach to Gambhir, no run, looks to run this behind square, but can't beat point

Russell to Gambhir, 1 run, drops this at his fee, towards cover, and takes a quick single

19.2

Roach to Sehwag, 1 run, another run-out opportunity. Full, on the pads, clipped to the left of deep square. Seems like the two is no, but Gambhir turns it down. Sehwag has to put in a dive to get back in. I am not sure I have ever seen Sehwag dive into the crease

Here's Samuels

21.1

Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, and Samuels isn't spared either. Sehwag knows Samuels fires them in, so waits back for the first ball, gets some room, and uses the pace to guide this between point and short third

21.2

Samuels to Sehwag, no run, another quick ball, nearly a yorker, dug out

21.3

Samuels to Sehwag, 1 run, another quick near-yorker, driven to long-off for one

22.3

Pollard to Gambhir, 1 run, tucked away off the hip for a single, Sehwag back on strike

22.4

Pollard to Sehwag, FOUR, short, wide, smoked away over point. The fielder has got a finger to it, and I am surprised the finger is in tact. Sehwag's bat is in his left hand, raised high above his head. The crowd on its feet. The gallery too. Sehwag takes his time to soak in the applause

22.5

Pollard to Sehwag, OUT, Gambhir is gone. Good work by Samuels at straight extra cover. Sehwag punches this down the track, thinks he can get an easy single to long-ff, to which GG responds too. But Samuels act fast and intercepts. Sehwag now sends Gambhir back. The bowler hasn't yet come back to the stumps, so Samuels needs a direct hit. He produces one

G Gambhir run out 67 (100m 67b 11x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

22.6

Pollard to Sehwag, no run, tries the pull, but the ball is not short enough, and he finds midwicket. On the bounce

Mukunth: "Sid, hope you are aware that the curator of this pitch is the same one who prepared the Gwalior pitch wherein the little master scored the double ton!" Here's Rampaul, who might not like the sight of that curator after the pitch he has been given

26.1

Rampaul to Sehwag, 1 run, quick hands from Sehwag. Short of a length, no room, and he late-cuts it to third man. It flies towards the man there, who has been placed fine just for that

26.2

Rampaul to Raina, no run, Raina is thinking of the pull as this short of a length, but it is also outside off, and Raina checks the shot in the end

26.3

Rampaul to Raina, FOUR, gift upon gift upon gift. Short, well down the leg side, and Raina helps it along his way with a pull for four

26.4

Rampaul to Raina, FOUR, this boundary has been earned. Short of a length, outside off, and he plays the square cut slightly late to find the gap between point and cover-point. Third man stands no chance

26.5

Rampaul to Raina, 2 runs, and he follows it up with an earned pair. Bunts this off the pads, between the two deep men on the leg side, and hares back for two

26.6

28.3

Narine to Raina, 1 run, short of a length, on the stumps, pushed down to long-off for one

28.4

Narine to Sehwag, no run, another offspinner's wrong'un, but it starts around leg and doesn't straighten enough to get him the leg-before

28.5

Narine to Sehwag, 1 wide, this is the regulation offbreak, and turns well down the leg side

28.5

Narine to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, on the pads, pushed to straight midwicket

28.6

Narine to Sehwag, FOUR, top-quality shot. Short of a length, quick, no room, and Sehwag stands there nonchalantly to guide it fine on the leg side. This is not a sweep, not a pull. Not even a scoop. More like a vertical sweep

End of over 29 (7 runs) India 217/1 (RR: 7.48)

Samuels to Raina, 1 run, short of a length, cut away to the left of cover-point, gets a single

29.5

Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, He has sold Samuels the dummy. This is straight out of poker. Makes room early, Samuels follows him, and Sehwag shuffles across to get inside the line and scoop this away for a four. Saleem Malik would have approved

29.6

Samuels to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a length, turning in, worked away into the leg side

Narine to Sehwag, 1 run, charges at him, is beaten in the flight, and mis-hits it, which is just as well because the mis-hit means it doesn't carry to long-on

30.2

Narine to Raina, 1 run, runs this offbreak behind square for a single

30.3

Narine to Sehwag, 1 wide, wide down the leg side. Starts outside leg, and keeps going

30.5

Narine to Raina, 1 run, worked away off the pads for a single to fine leg

31.5

Samuels to Sehwag, no run, full, near yorker, pushed back to Samuels

31.6

Samuels to Sehwag, 1 run, appeal for lbw, a mild one, as Sehwag is beaten on the reverse sweep. This is a length ball, pitched outside off, and quick. The umpire must think Sehwag has got outside the line

    • SP Narine 5-0-36-0
32.1

Narine to Sehwag, FOUR, lovely shot. Sehwag is definitely picking those awayspinners, and he makes room to take this length ball from just outside off, and punches it to left of sweeper-cover

32.2

Narine to Sehwag, FOUR, one better than the other. Narine goes for the old-fashioned flight this time, and Sehwag's response is to come down the track, right down to the pitch of it, and wallop it over Narine' head

32.3

Narine to Sehwag, no run, looks to work this around the corner, but finds short fine leg

32.4

Narine to Sehwag, 1 run, fullish, around middle and leg, driven to long-off for one

Two hits from 150

33.2

Samuels to Sehwag, no run, he is looking to make room, but Samuels follows him, and all Sehwag manages is a hit back to the bowler

33.3

Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, Carved away for four. This is taken from off, and he has not even tried to hit this powerfully. The inside edge is visible to the batsman as he opens the face, and places it past point

33.4

Samuels to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a length, on off, eased away for a single to long-on

33.5

Samuels to Raina, no run, no turn here, and he gets Raina's bottom edge as he looks to run it down. It doesn't find the stumps, though

34.2

Russell to Raina, no run, wide of the crease, angling in, pushed to midwicket

34.3

Russell to Raina, FOUR, mid-on is up in the circle, and Raina has exploited it. Russell is angling this in from some angle, allowing Raina to swing freely. He goes with the angle, and clears mid-on easily

34.4

34.5

Russell to Raina, 1 run, short of a length, slower ball, on off, pushed to cover for one

35.2

Samuels to Raina, 1 run, low full toss, Raina gets a single to cover

35.3

Samuels to Sehwag, 2 runs, full toss this time, Sehwag doesn't get four, but he has hit it left enough of Pollard at deep midwicket to come back for two. That takes him to 151, and he looks fresh. No sings of tiredness. Accepts another generous applause

35.4

Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag keeps going. Low full toss, and he carves it to the right of extra cover. No power. Just the opening of the face and timing

35.5

Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, another beauty from Sehwag. A length ball on off, but he has opened the face again, and placed this between backward point and cover-point

35.6

Samuels to Sehwag, 1 run, Raina is ducking for his life here. Drilled down the ground, and he has to act swiftly to prevent damage. Sehwag gets a single to long-on

Russell to Raina, 1 run, length ball outside off, driven inside-out, but the extra cover is on the fence

Joy Bajaj: "Darren Sammy has bowled merely 16 overs so far in 4 ODI's picking up 1 wicket at over 6 rpo. He's scored 43 runs in 3 innings (out of which 42 came in last match). Is he worth a place in the side? How much ever you talk about his spirit & never-say-die-attitude, WI would be better off with a specialist batsman or a bowler."

36.4

Russell to Sehwag, no run, slight low bounce on this short delivery angling in. Hits him on the pad, but is headed down leg

36.5

Russell to Sehwag, SIX, this one bounces well and truly, and Sehwag well and truly pulls it for six. Over midwicket he goes into the tobacco-sponsored boundary boards. It might be the chewing tobacco, but Sehwag is smoking them here. Who cares about the health department regulations?

36.6

Russell to Sehwag, 1 run, gets just the single this time, to deep square leg, but retains strike. Not short enough to be pulling

37.1

Rampaul to Sehwag, 1 run, Sammy, oh Sammy. They cannot believe it. Sitter dropped. Sehwag looks to go inside-out, ends up slicing it, Sammy runs back and to his left from extra cover. Gets under it. In she goes and pops out. Ravi Rampaul's jaw has dropped. How can he drop this? This seems to have settled in for a second, but doesn't stay. Sehwag points at Sammy with his bat. 38.5

Roach to Sehwag, 1 run, driven down to long-on for one

38.6

Roach to Raina, FOUR, this one had a shot offered all right. Yorker outside off, Raina goes low, and opens the face, squeezing it past the keeper. Third man has no way to get around. This outfield is too quick

Russell to Sehwag, FOUR, There it is. Sehwag is the second man to reach a double-century in ODIs. A man has run onto the field with flowers for Viru. He cuts this past point, to the right of third man. No chance for the diving man. He punches the air in delight. Pure delight. Hugs Rohit Sharma. Then takes his time to acknowledge all sections of the crowd. Removes the helmet. Casts a glance at the sky. Pure delight. Tendulkar is somewhere in a Singapore Airlines flight. 46.3

Pollard to Sehwag, OUT, He is gone. He hasn't batted 50 overs till, but look at that score. Sehwag has mis-hit this attempt at hitting a six over long-off. Ends up skying this to Martin at long-off. Almost every West Indian has come up to shake his hand before he walks off. Rohit congratulates him too. And just before he crosses the fence, Sehwag looks back and raises his bat for the crowd. 49.5

Roach to Kohli, 2 runs, full on the pads, flicked away between long-on and deep midwicket, comes back for two

49.6

Roach to Kohli, FOUR, fittingly West Indies end the innings with a full toss to sum up their effort. Kohli sums India's effort up by driving it wide of extra cover for a four. That brings up India's highest score in ODIs too

So what an innings this has been. Sehwag has scored an effortless double-century, and now holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs. Both the double-centuries have come in the state of Madhya Pradesh, and I suspect on pitches made by the same man. Sehwag looks cool, no sweat: "Never dreamt of it. I told Gauti if we showed a little patience we could a big one. But I was never expecting a double century. It's a true time, you can play all your shots. When I decided I wanted to hit a six, I went and did it with a straight bat. I know people expected me to score a double-century, so thanks to them. And thanks to my family. I had said earlier that the top order was not contributing, and it was my job. Never changed my batting through this innings. I just told my self that I needed to bat through the Batting Powerplay, and I would get the double hundred. When Sammy dropped my chance, I knew God was with me. I am tired, yes, I am an old man now." How people will want to age like him if he is old. Join us for the chase at around 6.40pm
