West Indies in India ODI Series - 3rd ODI

India v West Indies

India won by 5 wickets (with 23 balls remaining)

Powell and Charles will open for West Indies. Bhuvneshwar Kumar for India with the first new ball. Three slips in place

VR Ganti: "I hope that Raina and Yuvi will shine in this match. The way these guys have been sort of protected by the top 3 batsman, the real test for Raina and Yuvi has not surfaced. Yet, they have been selected for South Africa tour. May be Rahane should have been given a chance in this match prior to South Africa tour."

Have a look at Alagappan Muthu's match preview while we wait for the start.

8.30 am Dhoni wins the toss and India will bowl

Dhoni: "Whatever games we have played here, even if it looks as the flattest wicket, there is still something for the bowlers here. I remember the 8.30 starts in Guwahati. This is not as early a start. The sun is quite low, and the batsmen may have to adjust." India are unchanged

Dwayne Bravo: "We would have bowled as well. We back ourselves chasing against the Indian bowling line-up. It is a big opportunity for us, to win a series against a high-ranked opposition away from home. Personally it will be big for me." West Indies are unchanged too

8.25 am The toss will be important, says Ravi Shastri, given the early start. Supersoppers out in the morning to mop up the overnight dew. Shastri says the surface was damp and cold some time ago but already it is drying up and changing colour under a strong sun. The balls will still do something for the initial few overs, though.

The series decider is upon us and we are in a venue that has not seen international cricket for just about four years. And to add further unknown quantities into the mix, we have got a day game on our hands, a bit of a rarity nowadays in one-day cricket in India. Stay tuned for the pitch report

8.20 am Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the third ODI between India and West Indies from Kanpur.

0.5

Kumar to Charles, FOUR, this time he gets bat to ball, the connection is good even as it straightens, and it disappears between extra cover and mid off

0.6

Kumar to Charles, no run, Kohli's saved a certain four with a big dive to his right at point, it was shortish and wide, Charles cut hard, Kohli managed to parry it away on the bounce

End of over 1 (4 runs) West Indies 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
J Charles    4* (6b 1x4)      B Kumar    1-0-4-0
KOA Powell    0* (0b)

Mohit Sharma with the second new ball

ArunDvD: "Can say it's Bhuvi's and Raina's home pitch. Uttar Pradesh mates. Raina's birthday as well. Yuvi backed by captain in the press conference last night. If the trio can perform well today, it will be a boost in their confidence going to SA."

3.3

MM Sharma to Powell, 2 runs, middle and leg line now, and easily flicked to the right of fine leg, Mohit hasn't generated much movement so far

Vasanth: "Mohit Sharma is a good bowler but Dhoni seems to be missing a trick (as he did in the 2nd ODI) by not opening with Shami. Shami is at his lethal best when the ball is doing a little and the batsmen are new to the crease."

3.4

MM Sharma to Powell, 1 run, outside edge now as Powell pushes close to off stump, it hits the bat high but falls several inches short of Ashwin at first slip, hits his wrists and scurries behind

4.5

Kumar to Charles, OUT, here comes the surprise inswinger and Charles has his leg stump uprooted, Charles was probably expecting it to straighten outside off, but it came back a long way with the angle from good length, Charles ended up driving weakly way outside the line

MN Samuels    0* (1b)      B Kumar    3-0-12-1
KOA Powell    9* (9b)      MM Sharma    2-0-8-0

Abhinav: "The thing I have seen with Dhoni is that he wants to use his most lethal bowling options only when the batsmen start going after others. May be he tries to get maximum overs from the bowlers he think can go for more runs later on. I am sure one over Mohit goes for runs, he'll turn to Shami."

Round the wicket now

Jim Roberts: "This is insane! Why isn't Shami given the new ball? Because Bhuvi and Mohit are hopeless with the old ball. Then, what about Shami? Well, who cares. We'll just spoil another exciting young Indian fast bowler's career like Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, and the tons of guys before that."

5.5

MM Sharma to Powell, no run, and for the first time. Mohit manages appreciable movement, but it is off the seam, Mohit's strength, he angles it in, draws Powell forward and beats the outside edge as the ball holds its line

5.6

MM Sharma to Powell, FOUR, he overpitches it now, and Powell puts it away crisply through cover-point, holds the followthrough on a knee as he watches the ball speed away

End of over 6 (4 runs) West Indies 24/1 (RR: 4.00)
KOA Powell    13* (15b 1x4)      MM Sharma    3-0-12-0

6.3

Kumar to Samuels, no run, beaten now as another one straightens, this also bounces in front of Dhoni

6.4

Kumar to Samuels, no run, this comes back in a mile, this is terrific bowling from Bhuvneshwar, starts moving in from far outside off, Samuels had already shouldered arms, it flicks the pad above the knee roll just outside off on its way to the keeper

6.5

Kumar to Samuels, no run, inswinger again, but ending too far outside off and easily left

6.6

Kumar to Samuels, no run, now this one holds its line, Samuels is walking across with lots of uncertainty, sees it straighten and lets it go awkwardly

End of over 7 (4 runs) West Indies 28/1 (RR: 4.00)
MN Samuels    4* (7b 1x4)      B Kumar    4-0-16-1
KOA Powell    13* (15b 1x4)      MM Sharma    3-0-12-0

7.3

Mohammed Shami to Powell, no run, gets bat to ball now and punches a length delivery to point

Andromeda: "Jim, which Umesh and Varun are you talking about, whose game was spoiled because they were not bowled early in the innings? As I know, Umesh rains 4s and 6s, and Varun hit the hospital after just a game or two."

8.6

Kumar to Samuels, 3 runs, short again, and Samuels pulls hard from around off stump, Rohit at squarish midwicket dives to his left and gets a hand to it, a chance, a very improbable one

End of over 9 (5 runs) West Indies 37/1 (RR: 4.11)
MN Samuels    8* (12b 1x4)      B Kumar    5-0-21-1

10.4

Kumar to Samuels, 1 run, comes in sharply with the angle, into the pad, jabbed square on the leg side

10.6

Kumar to Powell, no run, beaten now with a length delivery angled across the left-hander, how many times has Powell survived this way today

End of over 11 (6 runs) West Indies 45/1 (RR: 4.09)

How difficult can they make it for India? Last time they won a bilateral away ODI series, other than against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, was in 2007, when they beat England 2-1. Before that, when they beat India 4-3 in 2002.
