Delhi opener Shikhar Dhawan will lead India in the Emerging Players tournament to be held in Australia from August 1 to 13. Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane, who has an impressive first-class average of 67.72, will be the vice-captain of the 15-member contingent.

The squad includes a number of players on the fringes of the India team, who have impressed through the domestic season and in the IPL. Manoj Tiwary, who failed to shine when given an opportunity in the West Indies one-dayers, has been included in the side. Saurabh Tiwary was picked despite a lacklustre IPL.

This year, the Emerging Players tournament will feature three-day matches as opposed to limited-over matches as in previous years. India's campaign at the tournament starts with a match against South Africa from August 1. They will then play New Zealand from August 6, and Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) from August 11.

Ashok Menaria, who led India in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand before fruitful Ranji and IPL seasons with Rajasthan, was also picked. S Anirudha, Manish Pandey, and Ambati Rayudu were the other IPL regulars who made the squad. Karnataka's C Gautam got the wicketkeeper's spot.

Legspinner Rahul Sharma and left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla, who made waves with their incisiveness in the IPL, make up the spin attack. Karnataka seamer Vinay Kumar, who toured West Indies with the senior one-day team, will lead the fast-bowling department. Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron, both of whom have built reputations based on their ability to generate pace, and left-arm seamer S Aravind complete the pace attack.

India had won the tournament in 2009 after Virat Kohli led the team to a 17-run win over South Africa with a rollicking century. They reached the finals of both the 20-over and 50-over legs of the tournament in 2010, but lost to AIS in the 20-over final and lost out to South Africa for the 50-over title. The final of the 50-over leg was abandoned due to rain and South Africa were declared winners because they finished higher in the points table.

Squad: Shikhar Dhawan (capt), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), S Anirudha, Manish Pandey, Saurabh Tiwary, Manoj Tiwary, Ashok Menaria, C Gautam (wk), Ambati Rayudu, Rahul Sharma, Iqbal Abdulla, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, S Aravind, Vinay Kumar

manoj tiwary is the star and he will compete well

Posted by Sudeepkumar on (July 4, 2011, 14:32 GMT)

I agree with the team almost completely. Only suggestions. Mayank Agarwal could have been a better option than Anirudh Srikkanth. Deepak Chahar also should have been included

Posted by   on (July 4, 2011, 14:11 GMT)

what is Anirudha Shrikant doing in there???? Where is abhishek nayar or ravindra jadejea??

Posted by   on (July 4, 2011, 13:48 GMT)

Emerging players?!?!?! what are guys like the Tiwarys doing in the team after not being able to cement their place in the National eleven...Anirudh?! good but not good enough to make the cut, after all a free ride down under courtesy dad, but am happy for the likes of Yadav, Aaron Rahul Sharma Abdulla and Rayudu, these guys deserve to make it to the team...

Posted by Jeetender on (July 4, 2011, 13:20 GMT)

@ Cheeka -- U are doing ur best as a selector of CSK but not as a selector of Indian team... U are preparing CSK well for next IPL matches... i am tired of ur partiality... shop promoting CSK players...u lost all the respect i had for u.. thanks.. ...

Posted by kp_india on (July 4, 2011, 13:16 GMT)

Amit Verma of Karnataka is about the same age as Anirudha Srikkanth and has played 21 matches to Srikkanth's 23. He has an average of 47 compared to Srikkanth's 29. Srikkanth does not even deserve to be in the South Zone squad and is not even a regular opener for Tamil Nadu as M.Vijay and Mukund are already there. The squad already has three openers in Pandey,Dhawan and Rahane and hence we can use Amit Verma who is a lower middle order batsman.

@Pratz-XI yes my frnd its emerging player tourney but then what the hell vinay doing there after playing more than 5-10 odi's n t20 wc for india..its nt about who is less or more capped player but its about grooming talent and irfan n robin deserves place in this team they are just 25-26 and it woul have been ideal for selecting squad for oz tour late ddec..nway i hope s tiwary, yadav, varon aaron n manaria doess well..

Posted by STARFISH14 on (July 3, 2011, 16:20 GMT)

Rayudu could be the find of the tournament

ALL THE BEST RAYUDU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1......................

Posted by Pratz-XI on (July 3, 2011, 15:33 GMT)

Guys!! Whoever is asking for Rohit and Robin are missing a point here. They are no longer "Emerging players". Please do not confuse this with a A tour. An A tour is different where your second best team goes. Emerging players tournament is meant for unknown faces who are to be given first international exposure to see where they stand. Rohit and Robin played in emerging players tourney way-way back.

Posted by cricexpt on (July 3, 2011, 14:49 GMT)

Krish is going too far in promoting his son Anirudha and all the players from his team. Rohit Sharma should be there in the team and Ashok Dinda in place of Arvind

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 14:25 GMT)

wat is this guy s anirudha doing for the betterment of indian cricket we want k srikanth out i think r sharma is not there coz now he is in full strenght indian team but i think players like uthappa pathan would have been better otherwise squad shows and its misses show talent of indian cricket

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 13:48 GMT)

what's the use of selecting aniruddha srikanth ??...very disappointing would have been robin uthappa or rohit sharma who deserves a place in the team instead of aniruddha..

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 12:58 GMT)

Hope atleast 3 will do better performances... Ambati Raydu, Saurbh tiwary and dhawan... I think uthapa should be there to show his talent in australia..

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 12:55 GMT)

Good to see Rayudu get a chance.. hope he makes full use of it..

Posted by mrcool on (July 3, 2011, 12:19 GMT)

cheeka is crossing his limits...on what basis his son anirudhha gets selected in team...he is not fit for t20 forget about one day or 3 day matches..why player like uthappa not getting single chance in cheeka's tenure.

Posted by howizzat on (July 3, 2011, 11:10 GMT)

Cheeka, you could have done better by selecting,1.Rohit Sharma(c) 2.Rahane(vc) 3.Dhawan 4.Rayudu 5.S Tewary 6.A Maneria 7.C Goutam(wk) 8.I Abdulla 9.Vinay Kumar 10.D Kulkarni 11.A Mithun(who richly deserved a place in England Squad and you denied it, favouring the dud Sreesanath) 12.J Unadkat 13. R sharma 14.V Aaron 15.M Agarwal.

Never was a fan of Dhawan. By a shallow opinion of mine, he seems to be a selfish, self-centered and mediocre cricketer. I may be wrong, but these views come in consistently whenever I see him play. I have been looking forward to see more of Rohit Sharma in the longer format of the game which I believe suits his style much better if he controls his temperament.

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 10:12 GMT)

Would have loved to see badrinath there too... but i guess selectors r looking to give opportunities to younger players

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 9:59 GMT)

good mix.....but sreekanth should be out..........and chahar or pankaj singh instead of srinath aravind

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 9:10 GMT)

Rohit Sharma..?..y isnt he in here..i dont understand why selectors dont want to groom Rohit as a player who can be good for longer format of the game.

misisng this team ..i thnk

Posted by ashok16 on (July 3, 2011, 8:44 GMT)

Disappointing to see Aniruddha get in. He doesnt even deserve to play for TN. Also the wk choice is perplexing. Why not Pinal Shah of Baroda? Or Parthiv Patel could been wk plus the captain. Though not an emergin player he could have been an emerging captain choice.

Posted by anshu.s on (July 3, 2011, 8:23 GMT)

Very good selection barring the selection of s.annirudha.... all other deserve there places but at a same time as this tournament is called emerging players tournament should we include more u-19 players such as m.agarwal, mandeep singh, manan sharma. Its very important for youth develepment that bcci organise a u-19 tours to places like Aus,,england so they learn to cope with conditions better

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 8:11 GMT)

the squad is perfect, The reason Anirudha was a good selection is because he is perfect FOR WARMING THE BENCH, if he plays a game i would be shocked. But really why is he there?? My top 7 would be : Dhawan, Rahane, Pandey, manoj, saurabh, Rayudu, Gautam(wk) then give all the bowlers a go, rotate them. This is a really strong squad.

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 7:19 GMT)

Iqbal Abdullah and Rahul sharma... We r expecting both of u to replace the poor Bhajji and co in spin department...

All the best young guys

Posted by on (July 3, 2011, 7:02 GMT)

All the best Shikar Dhawan !!!

Posted by CandidIndian on (July 3, 2011, 5:45 GMT)

I dearly hope that Rahane and Varun Aaron do well , they are bright prospects for future.

Posted by SulthanXI on (July 3, 2011, 5:21 GMT)

Good to see Murali Vijay's exit. Such a talented cricketer... Good BYe.. But why A Srikanth is there... Where is Valthaty....... poor decision

Posted by anikbrad on (July 3, 2011, 4:44 GMT)

dear friends i apriciate the consern for annirudha and he is bogus choise but replacement cant be pual valty as he even is poor to represent his state mimbai how can he be selected on IPL BASIS??? Then anirudh is better but, uthpa, rohit sharma, i. jaggi and pathan, n.ojha, p.ojha, b. mohanty, snarwal, p.singh are better to chose. my team- M.PANDEY, RAHANE, DHAWAN, ROHIT, S.TEWARY, M.TEWARY, UTTHAPA, RAIDU, , U.YADAV, B.MOHANTY, P.OJHA, N.OHJA(WK), S.ARVIND, A. NAYAR, VINAY, VARUN ARON, ABDULLAH. THIS IS ABETTER 2ND TEAM AND RIGHT CHOISE AS WE NEED SPINNERS AND GOOD PACERS AND NEXT GEN BATSMAN LIKE RAIDU, RAHANE, M.TEWARI, ROHIT AND ALWD LIKE MOHANTY, NAYAR AND ABDULLAH TO DEVELOP.

Posted by Kothandaram on (July 3, 2011, 4:43 GMT)

good mix of youngsters, but choice of Anirudha Srikkanth is really surprising.. Ambatti Rayudu deserved a chance... hope they can do well

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (July 3, 2011, 3:34 GMT)

@Vin Vinay why to give pref anybody over "Anirudha Srikkanth"...does he plays for tamilnadu? does he plays for chennai? does he belongs to south zone? if all ans are no and even what if the Valthaty has scored more than Anirudha and what if Valthaty bowls better than him.....BCCI thinks we can afford 2-3 tourist in between the players...

Posted by KAIRAVA on (July 3, 2011, 3:15 GMT)

Selecting players like Anirudha Srikkanth & Rahul Sharma, based on IPL 2011 performances, for the 3-day matches in Australia, is ridiculous. Anirudha is a T20 batsman who has a poor record in domestic first class cricket (Matches 23, Bat. Avg. 29.4). His selection definitely seems to be highly partial. Rahul Sharma has only excelled in IPL 2011 but has a very ordinary bowling average (Matches 9. Wkts.-16, Bowl. Avg. 43+) in first class cricket to show off, inspite of him being a leg spinner bowling in Indian conditions. What about Parthiv Patel as the wicketkeeper ? Is he supposed to be resting after the "much demanding" WI ODI series ? Also he is not a part of the squad for thr England tour.

Posted by shaileshij on (July 3, 2011, 2:16 GMT)

ohhh good one,,Now hope RYADU do well here

Posted by   on (July 3, 2011, 1:37 GMT)

Shikher is a sloppy stater , He is not good for captain position but good for Ajinkya , But one more name is also missing is Dhawal Kulkani....!!

Posted by kp_india on (July 3, 2011, 0:59 GMT)

@vin_vinay Valthaty has never even played a first class match.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 22:17 GMT)

Rahane should have been selected ahead of mukund. I am glad after given so many chances vijay has been finally dropped...

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 22:10 GMT)

Good squad....but should have picked Paul valthaty insted of Anirudha Srikkanth

Posted by Raj12345 on (July 2, 2011, 20:10 GMT)

Rahane already proved that he can score runs outside India. It is up to selectors to bring him to middle order and fill Dravid place, which is not an easy job since very strong people on paper like Raina & RG sitting there. Dhoni & Co make sure that both Pujara & Rahane will be out for some years.

Posted by ABP235 on (July 2, 2011, 19:26 GMT)

the best squad giving opportunity to the young talents. some people are talking about Irfan Pathan - guys, this is a tournament for emerging players, not past stars, now discarded. Anirudha is certainly a misfit, everyone knows how he gets chances, Valthaty was a better choice. This lad Sreenath Aravind is a bright prospect, I hope nobody plays with his talent and abilities (I mean those N number of coaches and past cricketers and arm chair critics who try to change things with natural talents, just the way Irfan was destroyed). Rahul Sharma and Iqbal Abdulla are the perfect choices, excellent talents. I feel sad for one Sreevats Goswami, the keeper. He was quite talented, has played under 19 quite well. When I saw him play a couple of matches for RCB in the first IPL, I thought he had a good future. Somehow he appears to have faded away.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 18:53 GMT)

best of luck ambati rayudu

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 18:46 GMT)

great chance for these players to confuse selectors..........

Posted by howizzat on (July 2, 2011, 17:38 GMT)

Jaydev Unadkat should have taken the place of U Yadav. Otherwise its a good squad.

Posted by Prasdhoni on (July 2, 2011, 17:18 GMT)

This is an ideal platform for guys like rahane to impress the selectors as the reserve openers of indian team(Vijay,Dhawan and mukund)are struggling at international level.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 17:07 GMT)

Srikkanth Anirudha with a less than 30 avg got selected only because of his dad K Srikkanth that too when there will only be first class matches on the tour.

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 16:40 GMT)

why not paul valthaty....nd irfan pathan...

Posted by   on (July 2, 2011, 16:37 GMT)

I felt that the future prospects of Indian Cricket should be given a chance and this is a right step in that direction. The youngsters should make the fullest use of this chance. Would have been a bit better if Irfan Pathan was in this too. He needs to get back to the Indian Team.
