Injured Praveen out of Australia Tests

  shares 251

Praveen Kumar, the India medium-pacer, has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against West Indies as well as the Tests in Australia because of a fractured rib. Praveen had a scan on Monday that revealed the fracture and is expected to be out for five to six weeks. A replacement will be named on December 5 for the Tests in Australia.

The Indian selectors, who had meetings on consecutive days last week to pick squads for the ODIs against West Indies and the Tests in Australia, had included Praveen for both series. But the BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale informed Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of selectors, on Sunday afternoon that Praveen had suffered from a 'blunt chest'. Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun was immediately appointed as a replacement.

According to the original BCCI media release sent on Monday evening, Praveen had been ruled out only for the first three ODIs of the West Indies series. This came after Virender Sehwag, the stand-in India captain, had said on the eve of the Cuttack ODI that Praveen would be available for the second match on December 3 as he was suffering from "a niggle".

It is understood the selectors were not aware of Praveen's original injury when they had picked him in the squads for the two series. "On the day of the selection, if there is no adverse fitness report then you assume they are fit," a BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo. "If you have not reported you are unfit you are assumed to be fit." According to him the turn of events in Praveen's case caught the selection committee completely by surprise. "The selectors only came to know a day after the Mumbai Test (which ended three days ago)."

This is the second time in 2011 that Praveen has missed an important series because of an injury. Earlier this year a tennis elbow kept him out of the World Cup. Though he suffered an ankle injury towards the end of the England tour, he was India's best bowler in the Pataudi Trophy. The elbow injury troubled him again after the Twenty20 match against England in Kolkata on October 29. Consequently Praveen asked the Indian board for a two-week break. He then played in a Ranji Trophy match for Uttar Pradesh against Saurashtra in Meerut earlier this month to show his fitness.

The earlier story reporting Praveen Kumar's unavailability for the first three ODIs was updated at 11.00 GMT on November 29.

its swing and pace, praveen kumar good for odi, with his contrl, but when it comes to take wickets in clusters he is absolutely a slow death which is good for bangladesh kind of team. India lacks pace and swing demons i would strongly recommend selectors to keep bias out and select on performance but matched with international pace standards if we want any where to win test in pacy wickets.pls kp vinay kumar, abhimanya, praveen , trundlers for t20 and odi, let dhoni enjoy slow catching practice and lbw. we need slip to wake up for an indian encore in australia, three quicks, one all rounder, one off spinner.irfan pathan back in business means 100% chance of scare for australia.or even erratic sresanth but no place for shameless trundlers wat the hell they play for

ZAKS has a four wicket haul and the Ranji game (is still in progress) This will be good news for India for Australia. Irfan and Nehra should not be disppointed as both could be called upon should Zaheer break down with injury. Anyway I see one of them getting into the ODI side.

And next 2 tests we can bring saron in thus we can play them alternatively and keep them fit and so they can bowl aggressively and competitively.thank god we got 2 fast bowlers now india shd maintain them injury free and add few more fast bowlers who bowl almost 138-140 frequently like ashoke dinda and abu nechim thus we can maintain the fast bowlers.injury free for tests outside india.people want irrfan bak why dont we bring agit agarkar, kapil dev and javagal srinath also back ?? Until irrfan shows consistency in an entire 1-2 ranjis he wonycdeserve to come in to the team .ppl who ate bashing vinay kumar must know the fact that he is the.

The selectors being at the DELHI/BARODA game are definetly looking at both Irfan and Nehra. Both players are doing well and have it in them to step in shud Zaheer fail the fitness test. india lacks a good left arm pace bowler.

  • POSTED BY ashishsinghal on | December 1, 2011, 6:05 GMT

why do we say that india has got 2 fast bowlers. Why dont we consider Ishant as fast. In the test against West Indies he was bowling at 140+ and was faster than umesh and aaron

  • POSTED BY NikhilDave on | December 1, 2011, 0:15 GMT

If Irfan is in form, then he is the best bet in Australia. He is a tiny bit faster than Praveen, he can swing the ball, and he can bat. Plus, he is a left arm bowler which adds a bit of variety in the attack. He also has played in Australia and was instrumental in India's win at Perth

  • POSTED BY on | November 30, 2011, 23:24 GMT

This is indeed a big blow for the indian team as praveen could be a automatic choice for the position of 3rd seamer..And he is experienced bowler in australia conditions..I feel that the selectors should opt for someone like Irfan Pathan in his place coz he has been there twice and can be a useful all rounder in the team..it's better to take someone with previous experience rather than a newbie.

  • POSTED BY Texmex on | November 30, 2011, 14:35 GMT

Pathan may get a chance. Problem with him is like his brother he has wasted a lot of chances in the past. He is also a slow swing bowler around 130 but he has not as good as PK. If you cant average 135+ it is tough to be a good swing bowler unless you are as good as PK.

  • POSTED BY TheOnlyEmperor on | November 30, 2011, 14:27 GMT

Only 4 bowlers would get into the final 11. I would go with Ashwin, Ojha, Zaheer and Umesh in that order. If Zaheer is unavailable than it should be Aaron. Ishant doesn't swing or bowl into the stumps any more. He is hardly a threat. I would want 4 bowlers who can take the 20 wickets in a Test match. I don't see Ishant doing that. I would rather that Jadeja is somehow brought in. I would bring him instead of Laxman. He would present a good bowling option too and he can bat. The pressure would be a lot more on Dhoni to perform in Tests that way, so be it. He needs to learn to take singles. Dhoni sucks at rotating the strike. Irfan can bowl only at about 125kph. Sreesant and Munaf can't swing and RP and others are others are no good compared to Umesh and Aaron who can bowl well past 140 AND take wickets. Praveen is a good ODI bowler but no good in Tests. He can't bowl long spells and neither can Zaheer.

  • POSTED BY on | November 30, 2011, 13:11 GMT

So Irfan Pathan took 5 wickets once again today. Out of 6 Delhi batsmen out, he took 5! That'd be his 3rd 5 wicket haul this season!

Abu nechim shpuld be picked as Praveen's replacement, because he is in fine form, took a hat trick with a 5 wicket haul against Goa in Ranji match

  • POSTED BY on | November 30, 2011, 8:29 GMT

@ Raju Krish... people are talking about Pathan since he took two 5 wicket hauls in his last 2 Ranji matches and has already experience of playing in Australia

  • POSTED BY on | November 30, 2011, 8:15 GMT

Irfan would undoubtedly in the consideration given he is just getting his form back, can bat and has toured Aus before (If you can choose RP Singh simply on that basis why not Irfan). Although he might not be the best option since apart from Perth, Australia doesn't offer much assistant to out and out swing bowler. Mithun may well get a nod ahead of Irfan as he is tall and can extract extra bounce out of already bouncy Oz surfaces.

  • POSTED BY sportsfanatic1972 on | November 30, 2011, 7:16 GMT

If Ishant Sharma can be in the team, Sreesanth can also be in the team. I think the best choice to replace Praveen Kumar is Sreesanth because of his experience, pace, swing and ability to take wickets.

  • POSTED BY hhillbumper on | November 30, 2011, 7:11 GMT

Kumar was the only bowler this summer who put any effort in.Sharma is over rated and does not take any real wickets.Zaher is over the hill and seemingly always injured. At least Kumar kept putting in when the rest gave it up.He bowled well on some decent pitches and it will be a loss to India that he is now bowling.

  • POSTED BY svel on | November 30, 2011, 7:08 GMT

irfan??????? even dhoni will bowl faster then him. he has become a batting all rounder ... and currently we meed a fast bowler not a medium pacer... so definitely irfan does not stand a chance .

  • POSTED BY Naresh28 on | November 30, 2011, 7:00 GMT

india should take Sreesanth give hime one more chance. I dont see two spinners playing in one game unless the ptich encourages it. I feel that out of the big three one should sit out to allow a youngster to take his place - this is purely for the future. Praveen is slow and only when the condition favours him is he able to take wickets - so this might be a blessing in disguise. Umesh is a good accurate bowler.

india will have a tough time bowling out austraila twice in a test but for austrailia much easier...if India wants to put up a fight in Australia they need to go with rohit sharma in tests and give irfan pathan a go somebody tell the bcci that u need a genuine swing bowler to replace someone like kumar indian bowlers need to train hard and change their diets if they want to prevent more injuries...quick example shahid afridi in the game against lanka slid with knee being stuck in the ground something like takes a man out for years but because of the diet and how well the man trains he overcame it within a day bowling is just like having a nutritionist for a boxer like manny pacqiuo

  • POSTED BY on | November 30, 2011, 1:53 GMT

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | November 30, 2011, 1:16 GMT

There are 2 statements by BCCI official are surprising in this report. 1. "On the day of Selection if there is no adverse fitness report then you assume they are fit". 2. "If you have not reported you are unfit then assume you are fit". These are rather sweeping statements.Which players are supposed to report - all contracted ones? Why didn't Praveeen report Unfit on the day? Every national team including West Indies, select players and subject them to strenous fitness test. If they are unfit, they are dropped. At least one player from the present WI squad was dropped after failing the fitness test. India is about the only Nation which has no Physical testing to prove the players' fitness - as clear from BCCI statements. BCCI could borrow the physical fitness checking standards from one of the Nations and implement it, if BCCI is incapable of developing its own standards. Having no standards shows BCCI is out of touch with reality and needs to upgrade its policies & standards.

  • POSTED BY CricketChat on | November 30, 2011, 1:14 GMT

It is becoming obvious that Praveen is not taking his fitness seriously. I mean, for a bowler of his pace and type, he should be fit 365 days a year. I think he is coming to the end of his career. Younger, faster bowlers are going to give him tough competition. I am inclined to think he has come to the end of his playing career. To be fair, he did OK in ODis and Tests recently. Too bad he didn't take his opportunities seriously.

  • POSTED BY TRAM on | November 30, 2011, 0:31 GMT

Before a team is to be selected, each player who wants to be considered for selection should send a letter/email to BCCI that they are fit and available. Including SRT every one must say their willingness and fitness ahead of time.

Some relief for Aussies.A slight chink in our hostile bowling line-up. But still Aaron, yadav, zaheer, ishant and ashwin are more than enough to pick up 80 wickets. But tonight ozs must be partying hard for sure ;). With praveen in team, you could surely expect a scorecard of 20/5 after 10 overs for opposition.Get well soon praveen!

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | November 29, 2011, 20:26 GMT

This is not the first time that the Selectors picked someone unaware of his physical condition.Suddenly Praveen announces a fractured rib. Did any official verify this?BCCI has a responsibility to be aware of day to day fitness/health of all contracted players & Praveen is one of them. When BCCI pay their "huge" salaries, it is like any other regular job.Employer tracks the daily health of its employees. Obviously Praveen knew about his injury for some time & failed to disclose it - Why?.It is sad state of affairs where the right hand does not know what left hand is doing.Abu Nechim & Irfan Pathan have both done well in Ranji this year.Make it a 18 man squad & include both.Who knows when ZAK will breakdown as obviously his selection is guaranteed whether he is fit or not. If selectors do not want Abu, include a second spinner all rounder-Jadeja.Recent consistent middle order batting failures justify an all rounder @#7. Both Irfan & Jadeja are ideal choices to provide a balanced team.

  • POSTED BY ABP235 on | November 29, 2011, 20:06 GMT

If they want a like for like replacement, then it should be Irfan, because both are known for swing and slowness (125kph). Irfan's batting will be a strength, but since Dhoni has an allergy with Pathan (like he has with Dinesh Karthik which helps Saha to come into the squad through the backdoor), we wont see Pathan prospering. It is the swing bowlers who can succeed against the Aussies and not mere pacers like Yadav or Aaron (unless they swing too). Thats why Praveen will be missed, a point missed by many readers. Having Irfan can also help - we can use him at No.6 as a batting allrounder who can be used in short bowling spells to lend support to the 4-pronged bowling attack. With Ashwin's batting capability proven, we will have batting strength upto No.8 with 5 bowlers with ability to bowl a minimum of 15 overs per day

He can bring good balance to team India....you need couple of allrounders to combat with Aussies.....just imagine a player like Gambhir ...tell me what else he can contribute if he fails with the bat.... is he a brian lara / ricky ponting who can change a whole game with his batting....please remind me if someone remembers such an innings from Gambhir...in fact not seen him doing anything gr8 after world cup final. In fact Jadeja also shud hv been in the squad, he can make contributions in all depts. batting, bowling and fielding.

com'on Irfan pathan keep picking bucket full of wickets and score few 50s in the next couple of Ranji games, then selectors should pick you as replacement for the Australia test tour, all the best

  • POSTED BY zico123 on | November 29, 2011, 16:52 GMT

Irfan pathan already took two 5 fors in last 2 Ranji matches, so already he is in some sort of form, more he plays, better he will get

  • POSTED BY zico123 on | November 29, 2011, 16:50 GMT

Irfan pathan or Sreeshanth should be picked as replacement for Australia test series, but my first vote will be Irfan Pathan

Zaheer, Ishant and Aswin should play all 4 test matches in Australia, 4th bowler should be Irfan pathan to play in MCG and Adelaide, Ojha should play in Sydney and Umesh Yadav in Perth

  • POSTED BY Brain_Storm on | November 29, 2011, 16:41 GMT

seeing that BCCI is controlling the ICC and therefore controls cricket, they should introduce a player trading law. Then BCCI and PCB should trade some Indian batsman for Pakistan fast bowlers. :-)

  • POSTED BY zico123 on | November 29, 2011, 16:40 GMT

Irfan Pathan took 2 five fors in last 2 Ranji matches, so he is in some sort of form, he should be picked, and if he clicks it will solve our long lasting seaming allrounder problem

Test match replacement. best talent: abu nechim. most promising left hander: pradeep sangwan. form concern: irfan pathan. most possible selectors choices: vinay kumar or abhimanyu mithun. the name nobody mentions: pankaj singh. dark horse: l balaji as he is from tamil nadu. My choice (very low chance tho) abu nechim followed by sangwan.

people who are advocating for V kumar and endorsing negative comments for Aaron and Yadav, are among the lot who are responsible for India being considered as a team with toothless bowling attack.after a long time India has got steel canine tooth i.e Varun and Yadav and yet all these people are discouraging them.Varun and Aaron Ishant are the future of Indian cricket they shud be encouraged rather than dessimating their morale.no way u can hold line & length bowling like 130s all day long coz Batsmen today are used to playing these kind of bowling right frm their childhood days.sooner or later u wud find ur bowler as a favourite foddar for the batsmen.bringing panic in the nerves of batsmen is key today

Irfan Pathan has bowled superbly with a similar swing he got early in his career.. two five wicket hauls on dead ranji pitches... and India's lower order needs someone who can hang around... I would any day take him to AUstralia as he has toured twice to Australia and has right idea of the conditions... Irfan Irfan Irfan...

In India, cricket politics have murdered the careers of several players like Maninder singh, Kiran More, Nayan Mongia, Venkatesh Prasad particularly, and now Irfan Pathan. Irfan's case is a clear example of vengence, vendetta and grudge of selection bosses including Dhoni. Irfan is not inferior to any bowler playing for India presently. The selection committee should feel ashamed for this kind of attitude.

  • POSTED BY saini123456 on | November 29, 2011, 14:34 GMT

I request to the selectors please give an opportunity to Irfan pathan. He has the experience in Australia as well as he is in a very good form. I know you are looking for youngsters, but irfan has just 27 and he will play at-least 8-10 years more.send him to Australia in replacement of praveen kumar.

  • POSTED BY Vpx23 on | November 29, 2011, 14:27 GMT

Another option is..since for sure one of the five seamers will be doing the water shows for the series a better bet would be Jadeja who can be a better option as a subsitute since he is a better fielder. Add to that his stock value as a leftie spinner/more than capable batsman. THE SELECTORS SHOULD CAREFULLY THINK OUT THEIR OPTIONS. NO USE TAKING 10 FAST BOWLERS WHEN ACTUALLY 3 IDEALLY WOULD SERVE THE PURPOSE. (since there is no a fast bowling all rounder is in sight)

  • POSTED BY on | November 29, 2011, 14:25 GMT

What the hell is wrong with selection committee , they just pick bowlers as if they are playing musical chair and then expect them to perform excellent without giving ample chances. • POSTED BY on | November 29, 2011, 13:46 GMT

@Mathura.das Please dont bring in north - south divide. Nehra is not fit for longer version of games as he breaks down frequently. Is he playing any first class matches now btw? Yuvraj is ill wth tumour. Harbhajan has been out of form for years and good that he was rejected from the team. Pathan is not from north india. then they are giving chances to Rahane, Patel, Yadav, Aaron- all are from north. Dhoni, raina, praveen - are from north.. if u have talent u would paly

  • POSTED BY on | November 29, 2011, 13:36 GMT

The selectors must first find out whether the proposed players are fit - specifically they must seek fitness certificates. You cannot go by the premise that if the player does not admit any injury, he is "assumed" to be fit. The selectors have a pie in their face changing the squad which they announced only days before.

This has to be the sign to recall Irfan Pathan. Not only he has bowled well, he has batted better than the current No 7's in tests in the last australia tour. However there is a good possibility that the lack of knowledge of current performers in domestic cricket might force selectors to go with the horendous choice of Vinay Kumar or R P SIngh. Now if ZAK is also ruled out , although at the moment even he is taken to australia, no can be sure about anything related to him.Best to take pathan because of the left arm option and also the fact that he is a real fighter and a quick learner. You have to invest in these guys , rather than oversmart ,unpredictable and inconsisitent cricketers like MUNAF and SREESHANT

I totally agree with Shashidhar.....What is Umesh and Aaron doing? I agree they bowl at 140Km/h, but are smaked all around the park.....Dhoni knows how to use Vinay.....He topped Karnataka in bowling and currently he and Zak are the only two bowlers who can bowl both inswinger and outswingers. Give him a chance on Boxing day and see....Punter's score card will be lbw Vinay. Even Vinay bowls around 135Km/h which is what Aaron and Ishant does. Remember England series, Vinay provided break throughs in all the 5 matches when Dhoni wanted and he was out standing in Delhi game

Bad news..Really Bad news... India was banking on him to bowl long spells to give breaks to Ishant & Umesh (or Varun) in test match. Selectors made good choice of waiting till Monday to have time to see other bowlers in domestic circuit. With Zaheer still not 100%, Irfan Pathan's match against Delhi is very crucial for his fortunes. RP has done not well in the England, Nehra, Munaf not fit, Sreeshant wayward, Mithun should be given opportunity in next 2 ODI's b4 thinking to picking him for tour. Selectors, please do not pick untested bowler and waste his career.

    Suddenly,bowling looks shaky....

  • POSTED BY ShashidharHundi on | November 29, 2011, 12:06 GMT

Those who are critisising vinay should understand that he is a thinking cricketer. Othewise he would have topped (Top 5) the wicket charts in Ranji season regularly. He has just played around 10 ODIs. More over, England series is the first series where he got the oppurtunity to play full series. Pace alone can't get you wickets. India already has got two pacers in Umesh & Aaron. Vinay can be a good addition to these two young bowlers. Praveen's place will be filled in either by Vinay or Mithun. Who ever gets selected it will have a impact on Karnataka Ranji matches. I think time is still not right to recall Irfan. Let him play full Ranji season and show his skills.

Besides, he is probably the only to show some fight. In Aus, we need fgihters. Not unfit but spectacular-on-their-day bowlers. On the shame coin, how abt Santhakumaran coming in? Sreesantham

  • POSTED BY NRI- on | November 29, 2011, 11:28 GMT

PK would not have been in the top XI anyway as he is the 4th best paceman behind Aaron, Yadav & Zaheer. Aaron & Yadav are the real deal and if ZK is also unfit, then Ishant will be pacer no 3. If ZK is unfit, 2 replacements are needed. I hope he is so that the selectors are forced to take both Aaron & Yadav in the final XI otherwise those dingbats dont understand and keep using the tried & failed guys albeit PK did okay in England. Now they have to take 2 more or 1 more if ZK is fit. Irfan, Mithun etc are all right but RP Singh, Sreesanth & Munaf should be banned - on the most swing & seam friendly wickets in the world, they could not even take wickets against the counties!!!

In the same Ranji season, Bhajji took 2 wkts @102 in 3 games. IK Pathan 3 3 76.3 25 169 14 5/37 8/77 12.07 2.20 32.7 2 0 - This is in order of Mat Inn Ovr Mdn Runs Wkts BBI BBM Ave Eco S/R 5WI 10WM. He might not be bowling above 130kph but he has consistency to take wickets at regular intervals to halt the scoring of the opposition. He is 1000 times better batsman than Vinay. Irfan should be given chance atleast for a series to prove himself back in international arena.

all of you commenting about irfan pathan please note he has not done anything noteworthy in the last 2 ranji seasons and i saw him bowl in ranji matches he is still struggling to touch even 130 kph and his swing is still not there... so please dont just call for irfan... people deserve a place in the side only when they are 100% fit and dedicated. and for god's sake we dont want a pace bowler who cant even touch 130 regularly, bcos that will not trouble anyone in the australian team...

If Praveen is not match-fit, pick Laxmipathy Balaji for the Aussie tour.

  • POSTED BY on | November 29, 2011, 3:26 GMT

Even with his military pace, he is more prone to injury. That's the problem with Indian fast medium bowlers. Zaheer sometime back summed up precisely about Indian pacers and their fitness.

  • POSTED BY on | November 29, 2011, 2:33 GMT

Zaheer yet to prove his match-worthiness, Yuvraj is unfit and now Praveen............hope its not the replay of the England series!!! Important that the selectors have another seamer (Irfan???) in ready to go shape!!!

R.P Singh, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patail Why Not THEM...

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | November 29, 2011, 1:09 GMT

@Orangtan: In my earlier comments I also requested the Selectors to replace Praveen with alternate as quite obviously he is unfit. The selectors are acting exactly as they did for the England tour team selection. They selected Sehwag, ZAK & Yuvraj all coming back from injuries and not match fit. Result was a disaster. Here we have ZAK selected for 5 day tests subject to his proven fitness in a 3 day Ranji match. Now Praveen, on injured list since before World cup, is selected but cried off being unfit due to a ongoing injury. Risking 2 injured fast bowlers is attrocious especially when there are other youngsters who will give you 100% effort. Have the Selectors learnt any lessons based on England Tour? They select a squad of 17( instead of 18) Incl. 2 questionable injured guys. BCCI made a profit of $39 in 2011. Spend a few thousand for an extra player in the squad. There are unfit fast bowlers & no all roundersw.Replace Praveen with an all rounder I.Pathan & get an extra pace bowler.

unfortunate to see PK missing out. I would have loved to see P.Sangwan or any other new face to have a look at them. We must not limit our options. Its too early to bring back Irfan, for god's sake he has just played 3 matches. Are there no medium pacers or fast medium who could bat a bit ? Selectors need to watch the teams closely and if possible the u19 as well you could find a gem in there.

  • POSTED BY orangtan on | November 28, 2011, 22:40 GMT

That's bad news, and it means they can't risk taking Praveen to Australia.Name a replacement at once, and while you are at it, make another short-list of back-up batters and bowlers who may ned to fly out as replacements and get their visas processed.

It was the right time to give Irfan Pathan a second chance. Why Abhimanyu mithun again??? Irfan is doing well in Ranaji. and keeping aus series in mind and there is high chance that zaheer or\and praveen may miss out, we need somebody experienced bowler. This would have been nice warm up for him. Not only his seam and swing, His batting is very good asset in lower middle order. Cant understand why he is not considered. Dhoni still does not consider him a good option? or he is not in selector's rador at all???

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 19:30 GMT

The Selectors missed out..Praveen is swing bowler as he could easily replaced by Irfan Pathan. We need him as an Opening bowler..We know what he can do at his peak..Moreover,he is in good nick as shown in Ranji Matches with 14 wickets in 3 test at an average of 12..WOh.As he is a left arm bowler we could have tested him as Zaheer is not yet sure..Certain times,i can't understand the selection criteria even though my cricketing knowledge is not broad.I believe surely Irfaan will get a chance in other 2 matches..i am not against selecting a rookie bowler, but it would have been ideal to a left arm swing bowler with 2 pacers which looks formidable..Common Srikanth,i can't control my emotion..

This could have been the perfect chance to test Irfan, and perhaps draft him in place of Zaheer if he's not fit for the Australian tour. There is no point in playing Mithun right now. Windies are not a team that you should be too worried about really. Test your players at the right times so that you don't send a half cooked RP Singh to replace Zak, in case there's a need! Either one of Varun and Umesh need to be protected for tests only. It is anyways very physically taxing to bowl fast and that too in ODIs and tests when there's such a packed international calendar would be an overkill. I'd like to see Umesh play tests and Varun ODIs after Australia. Sadly, Rahane will have to sit out despite having done nothing wrong. I would have picked this squad for all the 5 ODIs: Sehwag, Rahane, Gambhir, Rohit, Kohli, Raina, Jadeja, Parthiv, Ashwin, Irfan, Umesh, Varun. This way, you bat deep, till 9 and have 5 genuine bowlers along with 4 part timers. Irfan is not there though which is sad. :(

I dont know why we are questioning the inclusion of jadeja. He batted and bowled well in recent ODI's against england. Plus his combination with ashwin was very effective.

Irfan Pathan has been shadow of himself as a bowler and is coming back after a long injury break. I would wait for a full 1st class season before including him.

I would prefer uthappa over parthiv but parthiv did not do badly in the recent odi's as an opener and so the selectors are persisting with him. pace bowling looks bad without zaheer, praveen and munaf.

  • POSTED BY zico123 on | November 28, 2011, 16:09 GMT

Vinay desai, Get your facts right about Vinay. Whenever he got his chance he has done pretty well. He is the goto guy during death overs, so it goes either way. recently he performed very well against the England side with 4-30. He is getting better every match. He is smart, thinking bowler. Uses conditins very well. He has multiple variations, including slower one and Malinga style sling delivery that can surprise batsman and keep them guessing. Thats what we need during the death overs. Moreover he is very experienced in the first class cricket and has captained KA successfully so far in the Ranji, got better of the might Mumbai recently. So throw your prejudices away and enjoy Vinay for who he is.

  • POSTED BY Ramesh_Joseph on | November 28, 2011, 15:37 GMT

Vinay Kumar is going to be the highest scorer for West Indies. Why selectors have to pick all the Karnataka pacers is something one cannot digest. They keep on ignoring Abu Nechim the highly talented fast bowler from Assam and Mumbai Indians (140+). Or at least Irfan Pathan would have been an option due to his batting ability. Vinay Kumar is an allrounder in another sense -he can neither bat, bowl or field. I am hoping that the West Indies batsmen thrash him so badly that inspite of Tenvic's (Anil Kumble's talent management firm) clout, they would be forced to drop him. There are a host of quality pace bowlers who are losing out at the cost of a trudler like Vinay Kumar.

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 15:35 GMT

I don't understand why people are criticizing Vinay Kumar regularly. He is one of the best bowler. Only the pace cannot win you the match. Variations are important. Take the example of Chaminda Vaas, Mcgrath etc... Its only about the perfect line and length. VInay should get a chance to go Australia. We can see the value there.

  • POSTED BY zig1 on | November 28, 2011, 14:46 GMT

Is there any accountability and transparency on Selector's part. They have become GOD, even more than a judge. Against a verdict from a judge, you can appeal, but against them you can not do anything. Why the hell, Irfan pathan, Robin Utthappa, Dinesh Karthick and Abhishek Nayar ignored. They are making a lot of efforts in this season. Irfan is second highest wicket taker this season, Nayar is Highest scorer, Utthappa and Karthick are also scoring heavily for past some seasons. They have international experience and give Sensible Power hitting to the team. But Irfan, Karthick and Utthappa are been ignored very badly and guys like Vinay Kumar, Mithun and Jadeja are preferred over them. Can the selectors answer these questions?

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | November 28, 2011, 14:22 GMT

It is not clear whether Praveen's injury is recurrence of an old injury or a new one. In any case he has had injury problems since before 2011 World cup. Considering this fact is it worth risking him for the Australian tour let alone for the current ODI's against WI? Abu Nechim & Irfan Pathan both bowled well in the Ranji Trophy games this year. Their performance is better than Mithun who has already had chances but failed. It would be best at this stage to replace Praveen Kumar with either Irfan Pathan or Abu Nechim for the Australian tour. When ZAK is being asked to prove his fitness by playing in Ranji, why is Praveen in the team with his histroy of injuries this year? Abu Nechim & Irfan have shown fitness, form and performance. Praveen has not + he is injured right now. Mr. Selectors, Do not repeat the England Tour blunders of selecting half fit or unfit players & hope they would be fit soon, as happened with ZAK, Sehwag & Yuvraj in England. Replace praveen with Irfan or Abu NOW.

If Rahul Sharma and Jadeja get chances in the playing eleven ahead of Aswin, it might provide enough rest for Aswin before Aussie tour and Rahul sharma gets some opportunities to prove his abilities. After having selected world cup winning side, they might get an extension, so now the selectors are relaxed to play games and earn money.... how many times past, they have added players in the squad not utilized them, and then pick someone else out of squad, this is quite amusing,,,, Atleast they should have got harbhajan and given some practise in international games, to keep him in hunt with other bowlers, even irfan, rudra pratap, agarkar, dhawal, balaji, nehra.....then batsmen like yusuf, robin, dinesh kartik, jaffer(in test) we can understan that we are hunting for fresh blood,,, but we can also utilize those players who have some international experience with them with the older and the youngsters, to make a perfect combinations.....

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 12:11 GMT

We should give both Umesh & Varun to play together in the same matches for a while. With so many 'secondary' spinners in the team (in addition to Ojha - who is not in the ODI team for some reason - & Ashwin). Ideally, I would love to see the two pacers -- Umesh & Varun and spinners Ojha & Ashwin (all 4 of them) together in as many of these five ODIs, to : (a) test them out, (b) toughen them up for internationals. and (c) to have a ready-made second line of attack, ready to get into the front-line, at a moment's notice.

Here is a list of promising pacers: Sangwan (21), Dhawal Kulkarni (22/23). Dinda (?). Still younger ones are coming up: Murasingh (18) -Tripura; Sandeep Shrma (18) Punjab; Brainder Sran (18) Punjab. Check out. Hope some one is watching these youngsters. There is also a slow left armer coming up: Vikas Mishra (18). Players in the age group of 18 - 22/23 are the ones, some talent hunters from BCCI should keep an eye on and start developing, for inclusion and trial a a year or two from now. Amiong batsmen & wicket keeprs there are many promising guys in that age group. Does BCCI has talent scouts?

common, no more vinay kumar. He is not a future of indian team, he dont have any pace and swing. give chance to irfan pathan. we need fast bowler allrounder in next world cup. rite now he is the only one for this position.

vinay kumar is the most impressive bowler in the indian first class cricket from many days ,he didnt get good wickets as he played most of his games on flat.when india go to australia if he get chance he will be the leading wicket taker.umesh yadav and varun aaron can play learn a lot from the vinay kumar when it comes to consistency and clever variations,i hope praveen kumar gets complete fitness by next match.

I agree with Kavirava --- Give Rahul Sharma the opportunity. Play only two fast bowlers Umesh & Varun at least for first match. Open with Parthiv & Sehwag.Gambhir, Kohli, Rohit, Raina, Jadeja & Ashwin form the rest. Open the bowling with Ashwin & Umesh. Bowling line up is an experiment but worth trying. Batting should take care of our weakness in the bowling. High time Sehwag gets rid of dasher tag.He needs to play till 40 over more often as Uttapa is waiting on his heels to grab that spot. Rohit this is your best opportunity to fight for No.06 spot in the test.

@ALLROUNDCRICKET - R P SINGH ?? He has only ability that he bowls with left arm. :) Irfan will be much better thn him. And please no VINAY KUMAR. Let him play IPL only. Good learning curve for both Yadav & Aaron.

Bring in Sree !!!!! He's got to be there in the team...!!!!! What the hell are the selectorz doin

  • POSTED BY IndiaNeedsBowlers on | November 28, 2011, 11:27 GMT

They should play 3 seamers. They already have plenty of part time spin options - Sehwag, Raina, and Jadeja would be playing as the all rounder I guess.

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 11:23 GMT

Please Perform in Australia.. World knows we are Almost unbeatable in home series.. Prove against Aussies.. Then We believe in emerging fast bowlers... We really lost many potentials like Balaji, Irfan, RP singh.. Their careers are fading...

Reason: Hype them on home performance; if they dont deliver in one series Axe them!! this attitude should change.. Else Remember Agarkar... What a stat he has? but where is he now? how he got out? Mystery..

  • POSTED BY CijoAntony on | November 28, 2011, 11:23 GMT

Go for, two pacers, Yadav + Aron, V.Kumar is useless. Ashwin, jedeja spinning options and few others kohili, raina , sehwag etc. So the combination will be 7 batsman + 3 bowlers + 1 All rounder. i am worried about the batting positons as we have 4 opening batsman.

It is a tragedy that Indian Selectors does not check on with the fitness of players before selection. What is the point in having PAID selectors when they don't do their job. How else could they justify the selection of PRAVEEN KUMAR for the one day series and the Oz tour. Even the selection of ZAHEER KHAN, who has not played a game since being injured is strange. They still go by the reputation of the players rather than form and fitness. There are some good exciting bowlers in INDIA right now and one of them is ABU NECHIM from Assam, who consistently bowls at more than 143kmph. He should be tried and groomed in the absence of star players so that we have enough bench strength and does not need to worry about not having the Bowlers. Aaron & Yadav are defnitely good choices for the future and there is one more bowler who bowls at more than 140kmph, I don't know the name, but he plays for DECCAN CHARGERS in the IPL. As paid selectors, they should look for talents all around.

Since this elbow problem is a recurring problem, he is unlikely to be fully fit for the Australian tour If Praveen is not fully fit dont take him to Australia. Abhimanyu Mithun, Manpreet Gony or Abu Nechim would be better options. Not worth taking unncessary risk.

  • POSTED BY Ram-i on | November 28, 2011, 11:18 GMT

@sajish, common man!! Ajit Agarkar???? He is the guy who has had most chances in the indian team. Same applied for RP,L.Balaji. Prashant has not anything to up his chances,Gony was tried and rejected. Only Praveen is unfit not the rest, and for once most of the guys selected are on merit of their performances in Ranji.

  • POSTED BY sankar8000 on | November 28, 2011, 10:55 GMT

It will be interesting to see how India manages without Praveen, Ishant and Zaheeer?!

However Umesh, Varun, Ashwin and Jadeja can cause heavy damage to W.Indies batting! Indian batting is also heavily Loaded with Sehwag and Gautam leading the attack... Let Us See.....

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 10:52 GMT

@kairava- cant agree with u more mate..except i will play varun aaron instead of vinay kumar....ashwin and rahul sharma as the frontline spinners..then jadeja/raina as the 5th bowler...

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 10:50 GMT

I can't understand why announcements can't be made in time.. when Praveen was not included in the test team, there was a lot of speculation as to why he was not in the squad despite being India's best bowler in the previous series against England.. clear and timely announcements (that he had requested rest) can so easily do away with such speculation..

  • POSTED BY A.Ak on | November 28, 2011, 10:46 GMT

He should take as long as possible. He is the KEY bowler in the Aussie tour and he is the only fast bowlers in the team showed he can bowl longer spells.

  • POSTED BY KAIRAVA on | November 28, 2011, 10:33 GMT

In Praveen's absence, I would play 2 fast bowlers (Umesh & Vinay) and 2 specialist spinners (Ashwin & Rahul Sharma) in the 1st ODI. Jadeja, Raina & Sehwag would make up for the 5th bowler's slot. Barabati pitch in Cuttack has tradionally favoured spin bowlers in ODIs as in recent history, Kumble, Bhajji, Jadeja & Ramesh Powar have taken a bagful of wickets with an economy rate of less than 4.30 whereas Zaheer, Nehra, Ishant & Agarkar all went for more than 5 an over & taking a meagre amount of wickets in the process.

Where is R P SINGH??!! We Need a Good Left Arm Swing bowler in Zak's absence. In teh England ODI Series in Englad, RP Was bowling at pace and Swingng it. His variety, angle and Swing is more suited to our bowling attack than Vinay Kumar.

its a blessing in disguise for the young fast bowlers....three of them now can hav a chance 2 impress the selectors n get their place in the rest of the matches....hope varun n umesh wil compete for their spot....

  • POSTED BY on | November 28, 2011, 10:18 GMT

Why selected Pravin Kumar into the squad? These days players are hiding injury to secure a place in the team and in the process cheating Team India. Where are some promising bowlers like RP Singh, MS Gony, Prashant Parmeshwaran, L. Balaji, Ajit Agarkar ?Give them a chance. These bowlers are fit. Utilise them in India. Another selection blunder by selectors exposed!!!
