Rahul Dravid has been recommended by the BCCI for this year's Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest honour in sports. The board has also decided to nominate allrounder Yuvraj Singh for the Arjuna award, an honour given by the Indian government to recognise achievements in sports.

"We will be forwarding the names of Rahul Dravid for Khel Ratna Award and Yuvraj Singh for the Arjuna Award next week (to the government)," BCCI's chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said.

Dravid could become only the third cricketer to win the Khel Ratna after Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98) and MS Dhoni (2007-08). Dravid, who ended a 16-year international career earlier this year, has already won the Arjuna Award in the year 1998. He is the third-highest run-getter in Test history, with 13,288 runs.

Yuvraj's nomination for the Arjuna Award has come as a recognition for his starring role during India's successful campaign in the World Cup last year. Yuvraj, who is recovering from a rare germ-cell cancer for the last six months, scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets to be the Man of the Tournament.

"It's an honour that BCCI has nominated my name for the Arjuna Award," Yuvraj said. "This is the second time that my name has been nominated and I hope that I am lucky enough to get it."

The BCCI's recommendations came after the government extended the deadline for the nominations to July 20. Earlier, the board had said that they had not received any intimation about the deadline.

It is amazing to see how political this nomination system & BCCI is !. A guy who is third in the World(all time) for the total runs scored in Tests (of over 13000 @ an average of 52) has to wait till he is retired to be honoured. At the same time Dhoni wh has scored just over 3000 runs(to date) in Tests at an average of 37 gets the same honour while he is still playing, 5 years ago! There are a whole host of super stars far superior to Dhoni (Present & Past) who have been ignored - e.g., V.Sehwag, S. Ganguly, A. Kumble, Kapil Dev, S. Gavaskar. I wonder if there are any guidelines for such nomination or just "gut feeling & politics". I would say Gavaskar & Kapil Dev are legends & icons of Indian cricket of their generation. Let there be a voting process by the fans (70% of marks) + 30% for BCCI, for such awards. It will make the process less political. Dhoni ahead of all these "cricket greats" makes a mockery of "Khel Ratna" the highest Indian sporting award!

MS Dhoni getting before The Wall is ridiculous. They are more great cricketers like Kapil, where does he stand.

Kudos Dravid. You are the best. You have already won million hearts, this is just one more award, which we are sure you will win. with lotsa Love from your home town.Jai Rahul ,Jai Karnataka.

@Kiran Kumar....Yes, rightly said. There are Double standards shown by BCCI and all know spat between Kapil and BCCI. Kapil just for being chairman of iCL( a rebel league of IPL) is not given pension which many former cricketer got. It is simple" Be good with BCCI or pay the price".

Congrats DRAVID. Dhoni got the award 5 years ago! It is shame on BCCI for nor recommending the names of Kumble & Dravid when they were at peak. Atleast, now people should recognise the worth of Dravid.

Completely agree with CricOr. Kapil should have been the first to be recognized from the cricketing fraternity. Followed by Kumble, Dravid & Tendulkar. But who can fill sense into BCCI's actions? Also, have they bestowed this award on V.Anand, posthumously on Dhyan Chand & Baichung? If not, hold it...there are other sports where individuals put in greater efforts without any support from the system. Cricketers can certainly wait. As for Dhoni already in the roll of honour, its a shame!

as always most comments are about MSD not deserving the award rather than appreciating dravid .. worst

Congragulation Dravid. Long deserved award. The award should have been in given in this order in recent cricket history Kapil Dev, Dravid, Kumble, Tendulkar. Dhoni deserved it only after matching performance equal or above these players achievement. Dhoni got it 5 yrs back did he. That is cheap.

What has Dhoni done to get a Khel Ratna award so early which Rahul, Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman have not done. IF GETTING THE WORLD CUP FOR INDIA WAS THE REASON THEY WHY ON EARTH IS KAPIL IGNORED HE WAS THE ONE WHO GOT US THE CUP FIRST... BCCI PLEASE STOP THESE DOUBLE STANDARDS...

Lets not forget that the whole team did well to get India to ODI WC, T20 WC and test No 1. Although we are going downhill to due to aged players. Dravid, Shewag, Gambhir, Tendulkar,Ganguly, Khan, Harbajan, Kumble, Dhoni, Yuvi and Laxman - these players all excelled.

Both award nominations are very well deserved though Dravid could have got this a bit earlier perhaps in the year when he got highest awards of cricketer of the year and best test batsmen from ICC. Both should get nod from Award's Selection Committee.

Dravid should get the honour of Sir Rahul Dravid because he is the greatest ambassador of Cricket whom no can forget and replace.

Great Honor for DRAVID..... he deserve more than this...one of the great gentlemen cricketer who was sidelined.

I'm baffled that Dhoni can be awarded with anything (including multimillion dollar endorsements), given that he's such a poor test player and captain.

These awards obviously have little value if people like Dhoni and Yuvraj can get one. The only three Indian cricketers who are worthy of any significant recognition, are Dravid, Tendulkar and Kumble. These three have performed in Test cricket, the highest form of the game, to the highest standard, over a long period. That is what matters in countries like Australia and England. Meeting international standards should be a prerequisite for any award and Dhoni doesn't meet the standard. If anything his poor attitude has diminished the status of test cricket in India. Unfortunately truly great players like Dravid and Tendulkar have been tainted by players like Dhoni, Gambhir and Sehwag, who care only for the shortest form of the game.

yippie he deserves one especially after many of his contributions were overlooked .@annup damani ya dude its been overdue

This is great for both Dravid and Yuvraj. Both really deserve it. I am surprise, though, to know only SRT and Dhoni have won the Khel Ratna till now. Dravid should have got this award long time back. Another person that is most deserving to get this but has not till now is Anil Kumble. Hope he is nominated one day soon and gets it.

Oh! I forgot there. Only looking at pic of Dravid and just posted greetings for him. Sorry Yuvi, i am lil late to greet you. Many congratulations for Yuvraj too on being nominated for Arjuna award. Why Arjuna, any one needs answer?? Ha ha any way i have a funny way to tell it" Like how Arjuna aims his arrow at goal, say even hitting bird's eye like that's Yuvraj hits with so much precision the Broad's ball"(6 sixes in an over)...:D :D

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (July 8, 2012, 0:19 GMT)

Dravid sir congratulations!! Very happy for you. Greatest servant of Indian cricket. And some having doubts here why Dhoni got earlier; i feel this will answer for you" Dhoni is not awarded based on how many runs he scored. If then that would have been criteria Dhoni has not reached 10, 000 runs too. So MSD is awarded that because he won with his team T20 world cup. A world cup in any format is great thing and that too after so long after 24 years. So comparing Dhoni with Dravid is wrong. Dhoni is greatest in own league and Dravid greatest sportsman, not only a cricketer; yes Dhoni should have got' best captain for leading an inexperienced young team to T20 world cup win'. But sadly we only have one biggest award called 'Khel ratna'. So BCCI felt to nominate Dhoni as he won world cup for us'. But i feel there should have been two different awards for Captains and players in sports field.

It's good to hear that Dravid is nominated for highest sports award n i'm sure he will won that. But he must have won that award till now. He never get that much respect that he deserves. :( Even Dhoni had won that award before Dravid Sir.

Posted by   on (July 7, 2012, 19:56 GMT)

Better late than never, Dravid has got the award for which he is worth

Posted by   on (July 7, 2012, 18:54 GMT)

A LONG OVERDUE RECOGNITION. KUDOS TO THE MOST RELIABLE.

Posted by dheerajshetty on (July 7, 2012, 18:45 GMT)

Great news, he deserves it, must have received it a long time ago.

Posted by samal123456789 on (July 7, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

cant believe dhoni has won khel ratna award before dravid or laxman.... This only happens in INDIA..

Posted by   on (July 7, 2012, 18:39 GMT)

Should have received this atleast 6 years ago! He deserves to get this award before MSD to say the least!

Posted by jay_vkjay on (July 7, 2012, 17:54 GMT)

Its wonder that Dhoni have won Khel Ratna 5 years back, and Dravid still waiting for that honour. It again stresses the fact that Dravid is the most under-rated player in India of his era. Yuvraj also deserves to be honoured with Arjuna award. What a world cup he had. Best wishes for both Players.....

Posted by   on (July 7, 2012, 17:43 GMT)

He finished as the second HIGHEST run getter in TEST history, Ponting overtook him later
