Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, has praised the BCCI for arranging more overseas tours for the side, as it exposes India's future cricketers to different conditions for their all-round grooming. The India A squad is about to embark on a tour of New Zealand, which begins on September 18, after playing in the West Indies in June this year.

"The BCCI is doing a great job to send 'A' tour abroad more often," Rajput said. "These are the players who are the bench strength of the Indian team. Once these players go to other countries and get accustomed, and when they play for the country and tour, they are well-prepared."

The squad has assembled at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for a training camp and Rajput was confident that the preparation would benefit ahead of the tour. The India A team that toured the West Indies had missed out on practice and that had reflected in their 2-1 loss in the unofficial Test series.

"We just had two days (before the West Indies tour), and we never had any practice games in the West Indies because it was raining, so we straightaway went to the Test match. There is no excuse, but I think a camp prepares you better for a tour. We are preparing as per New Zealand conditions, so it is good we are in Bangalore because it is as similar to New Zealand as possible. The main aim is to develop all our players to perform in New Zealand conditions.

"Any outstation tour is difficult. But I am sure the players are well prepared now, because when you go on away tours you must be mentally strong and that is the key for success."

The side includes Unmukt Chand, the captain of the Indian team that won the Under-19 World Cup in Australia. Rajput said the performance in the 'A' side would be a step in the right direction as these tours acts as a bridge between the Under-19 and the international levels of the game.

"You can't directly jump from Under-19 to senior team; there are steps to take. There is a process, and I think India A is part of the process. So you get success in India A and go to the Indian team.

"Chand is a very strong player. This is a real test for him. I am sure that if he can pass this course, next step is Indian team."

Yet, he said, the performances in the 'A' tours would ideally have to be backed by atleast a season of domestic cricket. "To judge a player, it is very important to play at least one season of first-class cricket. It could be Elite or Plate group, but one season of first-class makes them mature. They know what's coming at that level, and they are mentally better prepared."

India A is scheduled to play three one-dayers and two unofficial Tests in New Zealand.

@nampally well said. Some of these U19 players need to be inducted into the A-team following performances there they could reach the senior team. If Chand is ready he could leap frog after his A -team trip. I believe that Sandeep Sharma was the key to U19 victory and very little was highlighted on that U19 WC win.

Posted by   on (September 6, 2012, 9:43 GMT)

Certain u19 players like Baba, Sharma, Harmeet and even Smit shud be taken under the wing of BCCI and they skills developed further thought the National Cricket Academy, thy FAMILIES shud receive SPONSORSHIP MONIES so they families dont struggle to keep these kids at the Academy. We forget how expensive it is to support youngsters in sports, in UK they wud be taken care of properly but this is INDIA where ppl win SILVER in an Olympics but family so poor thy cant even watch the event or even know of the medal, this is the sad state of affairs of sport in India. Sports Minister needs to put in support structures to help those looking to make a career in sport.

Very happy to see Unmukt Chand included. Would have been even happier to see Baba Aparajit, Harmeet Singh, Smit Patel and Sandeep Sharma (did anyone see how much he swung the ball?) included as well. Since they recently played in Australia, NZ wouldn't be too different and they could be tested against almost Test level players without the pressure of the Test matches.

A Team tours should be better used to introduce these bright prospects to international level cricket. I had started typing this without reading many comments and am glad to see Hotu Chainani feeling the same way as I do.

all the best to indian A team and best wishes anustup majumdar..............india's next no. 6 guys.....................sorry mr .rockcityguy its ITS MR ANUSTUP MAJUMDAR AGAIN BEST WISHES FOR HIM.........................

Awana reallyood to see shud be in this squad, ws very good in WI, gud to see Rituraj in squad as he hs done very in domestic. prob in India is we hve sme re gud India A selections n then sme real duds...but Selectors will/tend to overlook India A in selecting squads which doesnt make any sense, what is point of India A? If BCCI were proactive thy wud hve concerntrated more on IndiaA team esp tours all around the year and build players for the future

Posted by   on (September 5, 2012, 7:35 GMT)

Awana, Aron and Harmeet Singh must have been given chance in A ream. Harmeet is better than any other left arm orthodox spinner in the world. His control and variation are second to none. Bring him in.

Posted by   on (September 5, 2012, 7:07 GMT)

The team selection is flawed. They could have done better. Sandeep Sharma, Aparajith, Harmit Singh, and Smit Patel, from the under 19 squad, should have found a spot in the A team. Parvinder Awana and Varun Aaron are glaring omissions in the fast bowling department. Jaydev Undakat, Naman Ojha and a few others could have been omitted.

Posted by Gowza on (September 5, 2012, 2:53 GMT)

it's impossible to fit everyone into an A team but varun aaron and awana are missing, manish pandey and akshath reddy are missing to. does badri really need more A team cricket? selectors should already know what he can do and he's already experienced enough so let some young guys get a chance to get some experience and show their ability.

Posted by Nampally on (September 5, 2012, 2:08 GMT)

Indian "A" Team tours are very good way of developing young talent. They should be the intermediate step between the U-19 & Test Matches. Also all the India A players should not be older than 25 years to implement such a comcept purposefully. . In my opinion apart from U.Chand, V.Zol, Aparajith, Sandeep Sharma & Harmeet should have been in the squad. Sandeep is one of the best swing bowler u-19 had and he took wickets as well as bowl accurately. Above all he was swinging the ball prodigiously around 130 kph.Aparajith an excellent all rounder prospect , & Harmeet a second B.Bedi. Of course Chand is a superb opening bat & Zol a very talented young batsman. There are at least half a dozen players in the present A team squad who are questionable choices. By choosing these U-19 guys in the squad it would hve been a meaningful tour for them after their success in Australia.Sadly BCCI seem to have no goals or objectives when they select any India squad - Either Test or India A. What a Pity!.

Naman Ojha? He is already 30 years old....and still A team? Smit Patel should have been there in the team...considering the fact that Dhoni is already 30 and we'll need a new young exciting keeper.

Posted by Garryjovial on (September 4, 2012, 14:49 GMT)

Where has Varun Aaron, Parwinder Awana gone?

Posted by Naresh28 on (September 4, 2012, 14:30 GMT)

@rockcityguy - Ya, wish they try Suryakumar Yadav as an opener, certainly looks like a good player. Very well built. We need fearless batsman at the top when touring.

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 14:17 GMT)

what about sandeep sarma & p.chopra

Posted by RockcityGuy on (September 4, 2012, 14:05 GMT)

SURYAKUMAR YADAV is india's next no. 6.....MARK MY WORDS...:-)

Posted by bingorighton on (September 4, 2012, 13:11 GMT)

i think bcci just picks these player names from a lucky draw consisting of all players playing cricket at state level, and the first 15 names pulled out of the lucky draw box gets selected!!!!!baffles me how a player representing india is suddenly not even eligible to be playing in india A. its time selectors took these A tours seriously. and MEDIA is sleeping too..it needs to focus these issues in their articles

Posted by MaverickSix on (September 4, 2012, 12:42 GMT)

Wriddhiman Saha Should be included in the team in the place of Naman Ojha. Piyush Chawla should be in this team rather than senior team.Where is Varun Aaron....He has bowled extremely well in the international games...If he is matchfit he shpuld have been considered .....This A tour will be ggod chance for Unmukt and Mandeep...those two are good batsman and are prospect for future...Shami Ahmed Bowled Weel inthe last A tour....

Posted by sheldor17 on (September 4, 2012, 11:49 GMT)

parwinder awana should hav been in the team.

Posted by pvwadekar on (September 4, 2012, 11:42 GMT)

We should use this tour to test the quality of the fast bowlers for test matches in the future.New Zealand is a good place for fast bowlers, so players such as Parvinder Awana & Jaydev Unadkat [good prospect for the future], Varun Aaron & Ishant Sharma[comeback from injury] should have been included. Why is Vinay Kumar here, he is a T20 bowler.

Posted by trueanalyst on (September 4, 2012, 11:26 GMT)

Mandeep Singh will outshine all other players in the series.he is a real potential

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 11:18 GMT)

M Vijay is out of all squads... Some of these chances could have been given to Mukund, atleast in the ipl

Posted by Aazikhameed on (September 4, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

WE NEED BABA APARAJITH TO BE IN THIS( INDIA A) SQUAD,,,,,,,,

Posted by joseyesu on (September 4, 2012, 10:59 GMT)

Clueless, when people say after Ind A, they will be in Ind. Is badri rejected here also and i see a lot of players whom i don't know. What happened to players with 25+ age. what happened to RP singh, Sreesanth, Munaf, Ishant, Chawla, Balaji, Manish pandey, M Vijay, Dinda. And this team is completely different to the WI tour

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

For those questioning Manoj Tiwary and Rohit Sharma's exclusion, these two players are part of India's squad for the WorldT20 and hence not touring New Zealand. Link: http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc-world-twenty20-2012/content/squad/576822.html

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 10:53 GMT)

manish pandey is missing

Posted by tanstell87 on (September 4, 2012, 10:45 GMT)

'A' tours are important...i wish Uthappa & Yusuf Pathan should have been there in the squad...only Pujara was selected to play in tests from previous 'A' tour....we need more players to get opportunities...Rahane or Tiwary should have been given a chance at 6 in tests v NZ....what about Badrinath ?...just like Amol Muzumdar faded away due to lack of opportunities, Badrinath will also fade away..he wont get a chance to showcase his skills in the longer format...Raina shouldn't have played the 2 tests...Rahane or Manoj Tiwary or Badrinath should have.

Posted by omairhr on (September 4, 2012, 9:03 GMT)

I protest!!!! Why is Sachin Tendulkar's name not there?????

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

Its nice to have overseas tour but i want to see this team in squad FOR NEWZELAND TOUR: , RAHANE , MUKUND, MANOJ TIWARI(CAPTAIN), BADRINATH, Unmukt Chand , Ambati Rayudu, Harmeet Singh,Baba Aparajith Ashok Menaria Awana WRIDDHIMAN SAHA (WK) , Naman Ojha (wk) PRAVEEN KUMAR , AARON , PIYUSH CHAVLA ,Rahul Sharma,,SANDEEP SHARMA.

Posted by   on (September 4, 2012, 8:55 GMT)

I like to see India A tours on television. Selectors should try and pick from INDIA A line up when testing new talent, what was point of picking Piyush Chawla n Bhaji who havent really done anything at all to merit a place in T20 squad fr WC

Posted by sony_sr on (September 4, 2012, 8:43 GMT)

@Dheeraj Shetty, you said it. We want these games aired in some channels. Am sometimes more keen to watch future india players than 40+ seniors.

Posted by swagatsawant on (September 4, 2012, 7:56 GMT)

:P

Should Send Badrinath Also. Poor Guy Spent Entire Life Only With "A" Side; Only To Find No Place In Senior Team. If That Is The Productivity Of "A" Side, It Is Really Amazing!!

Posted by kc69 on (September 4, 2012, 7:55 GMT)

i would have loved to see a couple more U19 players in the squad(Harmeet Singh,Baba Aparajith).Lets see how do these players do,good initiative by BCCI

Posted by bingorighton on (September 4, 2012, 7:25 GMT)

These India A tours are senseless tours. i think selectors just pick players who they think wont represent india very soon and put them in india A. to me India A should mean it represents those players who could be picked any moment for indian side. players like Sreesanth's, mishra's, rohit sharma's etc who have been in and out of indian team with a mix of some new upcoming talent like rahane's and chand's. if selector says this is probable list of 30 players to represent india, and 15 are selected for playing in indian side, the remaining 15 should be playing in india A. Mr Manjrekar keeps speaking of focusing away from home series and on SA series, India A is the team where selectors should say " we are going to need different skill set players in abroad tours, let's put them in India A and send them to tours of aus,sa,eng, nz and the performers get picked for indian side.

i would rellay appreciate the effort of BCCI for encouraging young leads .. but i want 2 see this team in squad FOR NEWZELAND TOUR: BATSMAN: ROHIT SHARMA, RAHANE , MUKUND, MANOJ TIWARI(CAPTAIN), BADRINATH, Unmukt Chand , Ambati Rayudu, Ashok Menaria WRIDDHIMAN SAHA (WK) , Naman Ojha (wk) BOWLER: PRAVEEN KUMAR , AARON , PIYUSH CHAVLA ,Rahul Sharma,Jaydev Unadkat,SANDEEP SHARMA.

Posted by SanjivAwesome on (September 4, 2012, 6:20 GMT)

Praveen and Manoj are past their use by date. There is such a deep pipeline of talent, only the very best can expect to keep their spots in Team A. All it takes is may be an injury or bad-form, and players can expect to be taken around for another round of re-selection. I think this is good for India, although tough on the young guys!

Posted by Mr_Anonymous on (September 4, 2012, 6:08 GMT)

Overall, I think this is a good squad and hopefully they do better than they did in WI. Its a better bowling attack in my opinion that the one that went to WI (although it would have been nice to have Awana included which probably would have meant Jaydev Unadkat would have been left out and even Jaydev deserves some more chances after the Test cap he got in 2010 - hope he starts grabbing his chances). If I had to pick on the selection, my only definite change would be to have someone like Mohd Kaif be the captain instead of Abhinav Mukund. Kaif is a good captain and likely a good prospect for Tests (not T20s or ODIs). Mukund had a horrible India "A" tour to WI and he should have been dropped. Instead he has been promoted to captain. That does not make any sense to me. Anyway, thanks once again to the BCCI for arranging these tours. Hopefully we will have 2 or 3 of these every year from now on. We should have one to SA mid-next year before the Indian team's tour in December 2013.

Posted by ISHA2802 on (September 4, 2012, 5:33 GMT)

where is rohit sharma ... he should be in any form of indian cricket team...

Posted by QingdaoXI on (September 4, 2012, 3:20 GMT)

All of them who are asking why most ofthe players from other tournmanet held in West Indies are not here becuase three of them Rohit, Manoj and Dinda will be in T-20 world cup as also playing in Champions league with Saha, But why on earth they dont took Rahane in teeam when he is not invovled in both and make captain Mukund. Rahane, Bist, Awana are the notable absentees with Praveen Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Aaron. May be they would have tried Kaif too in middle order. Why selectors make this type of selection. A team means they alll are there to cover the bases of our main team, but by looking at this team ,it doesnt look so. Team souls have been; Rahane (cap), Mukund, Dhawan(Only Odis), Mandeep, Surya, Chand, Bist, Rayudu, Kaif (Only Tests), N. Ojha, P. Ojha, Praveen, Umesh, Awana, Aaroon, Jalaj, darekar

Posted by premnauth on (September 3, 2012, 23:20 GMT)

It would be good also for these youngsters to have some exposures to England condition, where the ball bounce and seam around and we need some bowlers who are not just sub-continent bowlers

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 22:42 GMT)

Why cant India A tours be televised?, I am sure there will be viewers, when a tournament like Bangladesh premier league was broadcasted here in India why not India A tours?

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 19:35 GMT)

Manoj is there in Indian T20 squad also CLt20 coming up!!!!! so may known faces have been left out but overall its good squad, also at least these players are getting foreign trip once in a while!!!!!!

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 19:17 GMT)

I m waiting to see some good performances from Unmukth Chand...........

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 18:25 GMT)

What PARVINDER AWANA did wrong in West Indies so to not be a part of New Zealand Tour ??????????????????????

Posted by AbAdvani on (September 3, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

Why is Parvinder Awana not in this squad ?

Posted by kkk999 on (September 3, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

good to see naman ojha in the side... mohd. kaif and badrinath should have been included as they have bulk of first class experience..

Posted by Naresh28 on (September 3, 2012, 16:31 GMT)

Suryakumar - well built batsman. One to watch, I hope they tryhim out in the opener slot.

Posted by Riderstorm on (September 3, 2012, 16:24 GMT)

Appreciate the BCCI over arranging Foreign A Tours. But, cannot understand the logic behind the team selections. Seems like an entirely different team to the one that toured WI earlier this year barring the players who are in the squad of the senior team. I was hoping to see Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumaretc in the list.

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 16:18 GMT)

What does robin bist need to do to get a decent run even in the A side? He has been incredibly consistent. As has been his entire team for the past 3 years. But well none of them seem to be good enough in the eye of the selectors...really don't understand their basis for selection.

Posted by   on (September 3, 2012, 15:48 GMT)

Why isn't Wriddhiman Saha not in this squad?
