Harbhajan Singh had plenty to ponder about after Mumbai Indians' defeat, Lions v Mumbai Indians, Group B, Champions League Twenty20, Johannesburg, October 14, 2012

The IPL franchises are set to release several high-profile players ahead of the 2013 season, to meet the October 31 deadline for finalising the players they would like to retain ahead of the trading window and player auction. Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh and Kings XI Punjab's Stuart Broad could be on that list. Johan Botha, the South African offspinner who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for $950,000 in 2011, was one of the big names released.

The trading window, when the names of the released players will have to be made public opens on November 19, but they can only be bought during the auction in 2013.

Harbhajan had led Mumbai Indians during the 2012 IPL and two Champions League Twenty20 editions - including their victorious campaign in 2011 - and though the franchise officially denied the news, a source told ESPNcricinfo that Harbhajan could be "released first and then bid for during the player auction".

Apart from Botha, Royals also let go of former England captain Paul Collingwood ($250,000), Sri Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal ($50,000) and the young Australian fast bowler Alister McDermott, who had joined the franchise as a replacement player last season. In all, the Royals released 15 names and the strength of their present squad is 16.

According to the franchise, a big reason for Botha's release was that he did not feature consistently in the fifth IPL. "We had to rationalise the costs," a Royals official said. "A lot is going to change after the 2013 season so we are gearing up for that and are having a re-look at the structure and the composition of the team."

Royals decided to retain two other replacement players they had recruited last season: West Indies leg spinner Sameul Badree and England batsman Owais Shah.

England's Twenty20 captain, Broad, has not yet played an IPL game and that wait could be extended. Broad was bought by Kings XI ahead of IPL 2011 but missed both subsequent seasons. A franchise official said the decision to offload Broad was primarily because he would be on England duty for most of IPL 2013.

Besides Broad, Kings XI released six more cricketers, including Abhishek Nayar and Ramesh Powar. Nayar, who was bought for $800,000 at the 2011 auction, was considered "overpriced". Australia's Nathan Rimmington and James Faulkner and the Himachal Pradesh duo of Paras Dogra and Vikramjeet Malik were also let go by Kings XI.

Kings XI will now have nine slots vacant ahead of the trading window and player auction, since Abhinav Bali and Shalabh Srivastava were suspended till May 15 due to their alleged misdeeds during a TV sting operation.

Pune Warriors, whose captain in 2011, Sourav Ganguly, announced his decision to withdraw from the next IPL, is set to release five more cricketers, with New Zealand's Jesse Ryder being the most prominent. Though all the names could not be confirmed, it was learnt that Warriors will release three overseas players, including Ryder, and two domestic players, including Sachin Rana.

Kolkata Knight Riders, who had one of the smallest squads with 26 players in 2012, released four players. Jayadev Unadkat, the left-arm seamer from Saurashtra, was left out because the team management thought they were under utilising him. "We have three Indian medium-pacers in L Balaji, Pradeep Sangwan and Shami Ahmed. Last year Jaydev did not get a game and we felt he might get a chance somewhere else," a Knight Riders official said.

Chiraj Jaani (Saurashtra), Iresh Saxena (Bengal) and Sanju Samson (Kerala) were the three other domestic players released by Knight Riders.

Some of the franchises questioned the timing of the October 31 deadline. "If you are asking to me take a decision, this should have happened after the trading window because then the franchises could have had the chance of trading them instead of releasing them," a franchise official said.

Another official from a different franchise agreed with the view, saying he had told his bosses that it was better to wait for the window to open. "I feel I can retain the players now and trade when the window opens. This deadline only offers some franchises whose squad strength is a little too big and an opportunity to have a re-look. I think all the franchises would look at reducing a certain amount (of players) and then look forward to the trading window."

However, all the franchises were not on the same page. "It's a double-edged sword and we would prefer such a deadline before the trading window since it allows to get rid of a player if we just do not want him," an official said. "No franchise can be sure whether they would be able to trade a player whom they wish to, and if they cannot they will have to retain him. This deadline helps us in avoiding it."

What abt Daredevils, I hope they release Ross, which is very unlikely or atleast trade him for better player, other than that, DD is all good.

To be quite honest with you, as a Pak fan, I want Pak vs Ind matches to be played. I personally believe that none of our Pak players should play in the IPL. If the IPL was losing tv ratings, then why do you want to include Pak players when saying that Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav are better than Junaid Khan and Umar Gul, or Ashwin being better than Ajmal? After excluding Pakistan from the IPL, I disagree with the idea of Pakistan players playing in the IPL.

Posted by Porky_PigTheToon on (November 1, 2012, 9:15 GMT)

Considering the fact that Indian Govt. has given green signal to Ind-Pak series so I hope to see Pak Players playing in IPL. It will add more flavour to it. - Indian Fan.

I dont think CSK dare to drop players like MSD, ashwin, badri. but they should atleast release mukund and Saha.. poor guys they deserve more chances than what they get in csk

CSK is the only team where though would never experiment. Local talents are missing with Underperforming Vijay, Thrashed Ashwin and Occasional Badrinath and Scapegoat Y. Mahesh. Why not retain L. Balaji, D.Karthick leaving Tyagi, Saha. RESTRUCTRE pls

Let give chance to Pakistan Players to make this IPL more colorful.

Harbhajan Singh is most likely to be retained. "these were baseless rumours and bhajji was and will be a part of the side.he has been with MI for the last 5 years and adds a lot of value to the team. there was never a doubt about his fututre with MI." - MI official to TOI. players most likely to be released from the squad are Davy Jacobs Aiden Blizzard Thisara Perrera Richar Levi and maybe gibbs. Plz update us about the players who RCB are set to retain and also RR.

So MI looks to release Bhajji and bid for him in the auction? Let CSK release RJ and bid for Bhajji and get him. Bhajji may be worse but he will a miles ahead than RJ in batting and bowling but will lack in fielding but who cares. He will on the whole add more value than RJ. Could be a great tactical blunder from MI if they go by such a tactic. Also, DC can get away with Dan C and get him for base price again. People now know how much he values.

Posted by hari040761 on (November 1, 2012, 4:29 GMT)

JADU CAN BE RELEASED AS HES NOT A GOOD TURNER NOT A HARD HITTER NOT EVEN SEEING THE BALL WHILE HITTING, NO ROTATION OF SINGLES. BUT CAN BE TAKEN AT A LOWER PRICE AS HE IS MORE RELIABLE AS PARTIME OPENER THAN REGULAR OPENER VIJAY. CSK SHOULD USE ALBIE, BRAVO, DOUGY, BEN IN ALL THE MATCHES AND LOCAL BATTING TALENTS CAN BE USED UP THE ORDER DURING POWER PLAY LIKE JADU, MUKUND, ANIRUDHA, EVEN ASHWIN ETC. FOLLOWED BY RAINA, BRAVO, ALBIE, DHONI, DOUGY AND BEN SINCE OUR LOCAL FAST BOWLING IS VERY WEEK. BADRI CAN ANCHOR THE INNINGS. SAHA, YO MAHESH CAN BE RELEASED. VIJAY CAN BE KEPT FOR SEMI AND FINAL. A PLAYER CAN BE GIVEN ONLY MAX THREE CHANCES AND IF FAILED CHANCE SHOULD BE GIVEN TO OTHERS. EVEN NEW FAST BOWLERS CAN BE INCLUDED FROM AUSTRALIA LIKE STARC OR HAZLE OR CUMMINS OR HENRIQUES AS ALBIE IS NOT HITTING THE BALL WELL. ALSO A T20 TALENT FROM PAK CAN BE TAKEN.

Posted by Meety on (November 1, 2012, 4:10 GMT)

Hopefully he won't get picked up by another franchise, but dropping Ali McDermott off the list is a big mistake - the bloke is eriously good. Faulkner cut as well? Makes me think there are monkeys running the show!

Posted by Ruban_Varathan on (November 1, 2012, 3:57 GMT)

I think its better to have an Open Auction next year(2013) inorder to make the IPL more interesting, every players from each team need to be released so that no teams can be drawn as favourites before thy tournament starts......If u think logically these CSK,RCB N MI teams always qualifying for semis by default and leaving no hopes to KXIP,PWI,RR,KKR....If things(retaining players) goes like this then IPL soon becomes mediocre......Hope changes will be made in IPL rules book......CHEERS....

there r ppl who dont kno ABCD of cricket even they still kno Sachin Tendulkar.. n i'm not talking bout India or just the cricket playing nations.. m talking around the globe.. Its hard to catch up to Sachin as a person let alone as a cricketer.. IPL is low grade cricket, i'd say even lower than women's cricket.. its just entertainment for poeple who dont kno anything about cricket... Sachin at his 20% is better than 99% batsmen at thier 200%... just his company .in the dressing room is enough to inspire a generation of cricketers.. which showed in the way team India carried him around after WC win.. n it was last year that he was India's highest and 2nd Highest run scorer in WC'11.. so all those who r comparing Sachin to Bhajji.. cricket is not for u, go watch big boss or india tv..

Many of the so called critics of Sachin here must have been fans of Sachin someday. I was a die hard fan once but now my opinion changes with each passing day. Its obvious he is struggling and he certainly wont improve. He is blocking a place for some talented youngster both in MI as well as Indian team. Most importantly he is putting a dark stain on his glorious career and loosing out on many fans well.

Posted by Sriram_Krishnamurthy on (October 31, 2012, 18:53 GMT)

@ Dravid_Gravitas_Statchin_Selfishkar - think you need to check this record out too. Better average and better strike rate and obviously more runs than Dravid http://stats.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2012/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=117;type=trophy

I love RSD as much as I love SRT. But I don't think calling SRT Selfishkar makes any sense.

Posted by kc69 on (October 31, 2012, 18:47 GMT)

if Pak players are included...i think Ajmal will be a hot property which every team will try to purchase.

Just take a look at this - we knew he had a bad IPL last time around and yet this is what it looks like. Still the 3rd highest run getter for MI after Rohit and Rayudu.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (October 31, 2012, 17:53 GMT)

I will miss the sight of Ganguly slowly hobbling around the field. Old people should also be allowed to play, even if they can't make runs.

I agree Krishn Verma comments. How many Indian Young players performed well in CL and T20 World cup. Compared to them Tendulkar far far better player.

when ganguly played without match fitness in ipl 2012 nobody seemed to care and now evry1 questions SRT who is 1 of the highest run getters in the ipl

There are lot of indian players sitting in the benches of many IPL camps without any chace like shami ahmada, suryakumar yadav, biplab samntray, chirag jani, pradeep sanghwan etc Jalaj saxena and Rishi dhawan is nt even considered by any IPL team

Posted by nilesh91 on (October 31, 2012, 16:59 GMT)

@N.Sundararajan, I would have not bother by your comment if the topic would have been about Indian Team. For god sake this is IPL we are talking about were retired player are still playing! If anything I understood from your comment is how jealous you are by that man's success. cheers

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 16:56 GMT)

Why every body poiting out Sachin only, He is a Legend and still a good player and if he can retain his name in India XI than IPL is a very small business, Brand value and Quality of player are huge factors, he still has lot to offer, do not go by Age plz, what about Rohit Talented Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Ishant, and many more..If Sachin omission will be a stndrd than 80% of the IPL plyrs will be out.so Enjoy watching Tendulkar, we will not see him playing after a year or two.

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 16:56 GMT)

Under Performers with many chances : Cameron White, Yousuf pathan, Sanga, Utappa, Pandey, Bhajji, S tiwary, Nayar, Ross taylor, Botha, Tait, Dan Christain, Badri, Saha, Mcullum, Lee, Zaheer, Dilshan, Levi, Bhajji, Powar, kaif, Bhajji should be released and reauction, so that they get a chance to prove themselves joining new teams

Posted by Princepurple1979 on (October 31, 2012, 16:14 GMT)

MI needs to go of their biggest drawback..Sachin. He just ensures to waste deliveries and then gives away runs on the field. He needs to be send out before Bhajji..

Posted by squarepeg on (October 31, 2012, 16:08 GMT)

The new DC and PWI's actions will be most eagerly watched. Delhi desparately needs a good spinner and should take Bhajji. KKR might be getting rid of Yusuf and Morgan. MI won't dare drop SRT or Rohit Sharma.. they would be booed out of the Wankhede.

Posted by GlobalCricketLover on (October 31, 2012, 15:42 GMT)

overpriced ones.. Pathan brothers (though Irfan is performing better), Jadeja, sachin (any price is overprice for him), bhajji, Gambhir (but dont think KKR will dump him..)

Posted by PadMarley on (October 31, 2012, 15:26 GMT)

Get the Pakistani players! make it real! I'm not even from Pakistan, but IPL is half baked without them. Afridi, Jamshed, Akmal, Tanvir, Gul, Ajmal, Razzaq, Nazir ...man! those are top t20 players internatioanlly. how can you consider your tournament complete without them? whatever the bla bla political and neighbour rubbish hating going on between you guys!

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 15:18 GMT)

I think this is the best chance for the franchises to rectify their mistakes in the previous auctions..I recken Hyderabad will release max no. of players since they have too many over priced players..CSK could well retain max no. of players..

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 14:35 GMT)

LOL... It seems there more Sachin has more critics than even Jadeja. Sachin is one of the leading run-scorers of IPL's history. One bad season means nothing. Secondly, with Sachin, it's not simply about his performance but he gets Mumbai Indians a full crowd every + the TV ratings go up + plenty other commercial aspects related to him. The owners will NEVER release someone like Dhoni or Sachin!

Posted by MandarSathe on (October 31, 2012, 13:49 GMT)

@N.Sundararajan..not surprising a CSK fan wants Sachin to go.... after the mauling in last IPL from Sachin...in a blazing knock of 70 odd of 40 odd balls chasing 170+......

Posted by BULTY on (October 31, 2012, 13:22 GMT)

Well said @Sulekha! Why should MI retain Sachin? Why are they shunting Bhajji? Because Bhajji is a non-mumbaikar? If performance is the criteria, then Sachin should be the first to be released. We would like to see strong performers take the field irrespective of their stature and make every match of IPL-6 interesting to watch from the viewers point; and again we do not want to see the pathetic scene of IPL teams going down tamely and ultimately crash out of CLT20 before the Semi's stage. So please not more than two sides to be sent for the CLT20.

Can any one clarify on this....Before 5 or 6 mths i read somewhere that all the indian players who did not play for india will be auctioned to avoid undertable contracts. For Ex Ambati rayudu was not in the auction last time bcos he dint play for india and so he was brought by MI with a mutual agreement. But this time inorder to avoid all the under table dealings they want to put all the domestic players also in to auction. Is it true???? does any one know abt it.

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 12:31 GMT)

I have a feeling the Pathan brothers might be offloaded!

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 12:30 GMT)

If Pakistani Players play in this edition, it can become the best IPL so far, hafeez, ajmal and afridi are the top bolwers in t2o format and jamshed razzaq and nazir will add more flavour to IPL.

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 12:20 GMT)

CSK, please release Ravindra Jadeja. I am available and can do a better job in the bowling and batting departments.

Posted by TNAmarkFromIndia on (October 31, 2012, 12:05 GMT)

Very interesting. I'm most interested to find out who the 5 players from Pune are. Marlon Samuels and Luke Wright were bought for cheap so I think they will be retained. Pune does need some quality international players in their team. Ryder has not played a single domestic or international game since the IPL so releasing him was a smart choice. It will be a very interesting auction.

Posted by ifrakurshid on (October 31, 2012, 11:59 GMT)

RELEASING PLAYERS EARLY WILL GIVE A CHANCE TO F. OWNERS TO BUT NEW PLAYERS FROM COUNTRIES LIKE SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRILA, PKISTAN, AFGHANISTAN, ZAMBABWEY WEST INDIES & ETC THEY CAN SAVE A LOT OF MONEY IN THE LIGHT OF RECENTLY CONCLUDED SUPER SIXES IN HONGKONG AND T-20 WORLD CUP IN SOUTH AFRICA NATURALLY PEOPLE WILL LIKE TO SEE NEW FACES AND FRESH LEGS PERFORMING IN THE FIELD AS PER THEIR KNOWN SKILLS WITH OUT UN-DUE PROGANDA AS PUNTERS AND BOOKIES GET MORE KNOWLEDGABLE THEN IN THE PAST COUPLED WITH IT THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF RULES AND TECHNOLOGY LIKELY TO BE ADOPTED FOR THE MATCHES MUST BE PROPOGATED WELL IN ADVANCE FOR VIEWERS/PUNTERS WHO HAVE THEIR CASH AT STAKE BOTH LONG TERM/SHORT TERM.

Posted by   on (October 31, 2012, 11:16 GMT)

Not surprised to see this happen - Harbhajan has not been bowling his quota of overs against strong teams and usually bowls just 1-2 overs (or sometimes none) if the batsmen are going hammer and tongs. And consequently ends up maintaining an ER of less than 7 in IPL. Sad to see this but hope he just discovers it all back by playing in the domestics.

Posted by N.Sundararajan on (October 31, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

N. Sundararajan from Chennai I was keenly hoping that Mumbai Indians would release Sachin Tendulkar ( since he does not seem to want to go on his own! )---and then not bid for him ! Well, hopes are not always fulfilled !

Anyway, Broad has lost so much zing recently, he's barely medium pace. Half his deliveries are in the 120s. Is he sick or injured or something? It's a serious question.

say anything but this is the first time BCCI has done semthing. really happy to see Bhajji out of Mumbai.. would love to see him play for Punjab. Also, Ryder, nayar, powar were liabilities to their respective teams.also, sourabh tiwary, y pathan , balaji , sanghwan, s.ahmad shud also be left out.. along with.. almost 10 more players from mUmbai...they are wasting the talents of many players.. And i THINK The most beneficial will be Vijay Mallaya.. :P :P :P :P

That is a surprise! MI releasing Bhajji was completely unexpected.. Is it related only to cricket? MI should live with Ojha and Murtaza as spinners whereas, Bhajji could have been a useful guy in slow and low conditions. Rest of the folks were expected ones.
