Former India first-class player Nimbalkar dies

Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who created history in 1948-49 by scoring the highest individual score in the Ranji Trophy, 443 not out, has died at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday. Nimbalkar was a day short of his 93rd birthday.

Sixty-four years ago, in December 1948-49, Nimbalkar delivered that record-breaking knock for Maharashtra against Kathiawar at the Poona Club. His 443 is still the highest Ranji Trophy score and the top first-class innings by an Indian, and it sits fourth on the list of highest scores in all first-class cricket.

In all, Nimbalkar played 80 first-class games between 1939 and 1965. Though he didn't don the India whites in an official Test, he once represented India against the Commonwealth team and scored 48.
