The IPL franchise from Hyderabad has been named Sunrisers by its new owners, Sun TV Network. The ownership of the franchise, previously known as the Deccan Chargers and owned by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited, changed hands in October. The new name was announced in Chennai on Tuesday.

The Sun TV network had bid Rs 85.05 crores per year (approx $15.9m) for a five-year deal, a week after Deccan Chargers was terminated due to prolonged financial issues.

Sun TV Networks Limited, which is headquartered in Chennai, is one of India's biggest television networks with 32 TV channels and 45 FM radio stations primarily catering to an audience in the four southern languages of India. Their network includes channels covering news, entertainment, film, documentary and music.

Sunrisers will have the services of Kumar Sangakkara, Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma and JP Duminy, among others, in IPL 2013, as the Sun TV Network had retained 20 players from the terminated Deccan Chargers.

@Rajarajan Sundaram Pretty emotional. @Rajeev129 said he hates CSK not tamilians. I too hate CSK (esp jadeja, srinivasan, and the skipper)or for that matter all IPL teams who are destroying the cricket) And it is pretty obvious that some of CSK's b-grade players will take over Hyd's b-grade players and there will be no interest from local in this tournament that lacks domestic quality(thats over all india)

Posted by   on (December 21, 2012, 4:45 GMT)

I can see lot of ppl forget to SEE tht the team's full name is "Sun Risers Hyderabad" and there are many local players in the team if you FOLLOW the ranji teams of Hyderabad, Andhra and Orissa (Yes, orissa falls under SRH region).....

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 14:43 GMT)

i would say its just another in justice done in the name of saving and taking over the team .this is a carefully planned move to subdew the local flavour and taste of the people.not hatred towards a community as some would say it,just feel sad that now no more it is a hyderabad team but rather a chennai tam franchise 2 to increase their domination . this time would only tell the story which will unfold later.

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 11:13 GMT)

The name should include a reference to its base location or should have as many local players as possible. This name seems wrong as it doesnt have any link with Deccan/Hyderabad

Posted by ramli on (December 20, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

What nonsense ... when there is so much fuss over Andhra and Telengana ... why choose Hyderabad for a name ... Sun is common to all ... the team name refers to rising of it ... Ex-Dc fans should only be happy that Sun network bought the franchise .. they will run it professionally, be very prudent in 2014 auction and ensure team success at any cost ... by the way what is the conection of SRk with Kolkata? Same here. Good luck to Sun Risers ...

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 19:17 GMT)

@ Rajeev129, Why so much hatred towards Tamilians. If you are happy enough to watch the channels from SUN network, Why you are showing so much dissent towards Cricket. Either, I don have any part to play in SUN/IPL. Too much of cricket spoiled the interest.

If you don't like a particular community, Keep it with you. Don try to provoke others.

Comments should be on Cricket and not on the People!

gilchrist was the only man who leaded that side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by rob-nick on (December 19, 2012, 16:47 GMT)

a csk-b team in making with the base as hyderabad..no hyderabadi flavour..every team in the ipl is named after it's base..sad that we are not lucky enough for not having a local team

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 15:39 GMT)

Weak - you can tell that some corporates thought that up in a meeting and thought that it sounded cool. It doesn't even really mean anything - not a strong sporting name in ANY shape or form. Embarassing.

Posted by naadnat on (December 19, 2012, 12:32 GMT)

atleast suntv people wont mortgage their team and refuse to pay salary to the players, like the previous owners did.they need more homegrown stars like other teams to win ipl.2009 they had rohitsharma rpsingh.now only parthiv and ishant amitmishra r in the team not doing much.they should try a new jersey colour in ipl other than blue or yellow.

pathetic name.. may be the worst of the lot.

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 12:24 GMT)

plz change the name franchise owners and dont named the team with sun it looks odd and name the team hyderabad hurricanes or typhoons or titans

Posted by class9ryan on (December 19, 2012, 11:20 GMT)

Doesnt really sound a SPORTING name ... Looks a pale team having a useless name

Posted by Rajeev129 on (December 19, 2012, 9:34 GMT)

Atleast at the interest of telugu audience, this SUN group should have named their franchise with GEMINI instead of SUN.

Posted by Rajeev129 on (December 19, 2012, 9:29 GMT)

Really unhappy with this news. Firstly there is no mention about Hyderabad then it is being owned by Tamilians not Telugu people. Usually as a Hyderabadi i hate CSK and everyone can expect that, some of CSK players will be shifted to this CSK B team due to mutual understanding. I live in Uppal, should i still support this dummy Hyderabad franchise ? or happily shift my attention to MI and DD ? or completely dismiss this IPL ?

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 8:53 GMT)

I think Deccan Sun Risers would be better........I think this is more suitable.

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 8:48 GMT)

@ Surajrises.. Name a better wicket keeper batsman to replace Sanga. Why MI retain an oldie like sachin????

Posted by kingcobra85 on (December 19, 2012, 6:59 GMT)

Rising Sun is syymbol of DMK and also the sun has strong cultural significance in the dravida scheme of things.

Posted by Biswajitbangalore on (December 19, 2012, 6:53 GMT)

What is the use??? we already lost test cap. slowly oneday. We should ban this money making tournament.

Posted by meastrostroke on (December 19, 2012, 6:34 GMT)

@Sai Bharadwaj, say like this. " no water in my area. It must be due to Srinivasan and chennai quoata". Delhi owners are from Andhra pradesh, Kolkatta owners are from Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals Owners are from partly Punjab and mumbai. Banglore owners are from Westbengal.. Develop the knowledge before posting rubbish comments. Moreovers its not inter-state competition but a franchise based.

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 6:29 GMT)

doesnt sound like a mature team name. Please change the name franchise owners.

Posted by lukecannon on (December 19, 2012, 4:16 GMT)

Posted by rob-nick on (December 19, 2012, 3:37 GMT)

Posted by Sachit1979 on (December 19, 2012, 3:08 GMT)

There was news sometime back that franchise was interested in Ganguly and John Wright as their captain and coach respectively. What happened to that?

Posted by   on (December 19, 2012, 2:54 GMT)

Pretty inane name. What is a Sun Riser and what does he do? Get the sun to rise?

Posted by Siva-The-Human on (December 19, 2012, 1:41 GMT)

Kalanitimaran is a great businessman. He step down to any field he will get biggest win in that field. He already have succeeded in television, as a film producer and in airways. One example is he sat on the success of a film he produced and super star Rajini starred in the film is Robot. So Sun risers definitely will get biggest success.

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (December 19, 2012, 1:23 GMT)

Previous owners Deccan Herald was a Newspaper Group and the present Owners are a TV & Radio Media Company, it is a coincidence? or Media up-gradation by BCCI(Mr. Srinivasan).......

Posted by Azweer on (December 19, 2012, 1:06 GMT)

"Sun risers" sounds pretty "ordinary"..... just liike "Indi commandos" doesn't really suits good for a franchise cricket team!!!... sounds too colloquial to have some international players... My choice would b "HYDERA-HERCULES"... but how can i suggest this to Sun network!!!! no idea...

Posted by Partyman on (December 19, 2012, 0:22 GMT)

Brilliant timing....... Timed it perfect to deflect attention away from the humiliating series defeat.... Well done chaps, keep up the good work!!

Posted by YJBasu on (December 18, 2012, 23:24 GMT)

Can a franchise owner include (1) corporate name and exclude (2) city/region name? What are the rules/guidelines for a franchise and a team name? - I don't see any rules on IPL official site. Can anyone, including Cricinfo share this?

What if other team names are changed to Reliance Indians, GMR Daredevils, Sahara warriors, etc?

Posted by Shandorinho on (December 18, 2012, 22:14 GMT)

Sure-fire laughing stock...

Posted by kc69 on (December 18, 2012, 21:43 GMT)

Thank god..its not solar chargers

Posted by sam_m on (December 18, 2012, 19:11 GMT)

This new name is cringeworthy.

Posted by VAS4 on (December 18, 2012, 19:04 GMT)

Wish all the best to the new team. I hope the new team and management will put up a good fight this time. Good luck guys. Power to sun risers!

Posted by   on (December 18, 2012, 18:38 GMT)

I guess that the folks at sun did not rise up to the occasion of good naming

Posted by   on (December 18, 2012, 18:29 GMT)

that named sounds irrelevent even it doesnt matter much lol

Posted by vinodzz on (December 18, 2012, 18:12 GMT)

Sun Strikers would hav been better ... anyway apt title4 telugu

Posted by   on (December 18, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

Owned by Sun TV & Announced in Chennai, where is the Hyderabad pride? It can be called another "Chennai" team.

Next there will be Punjab that will be axed & they will have a new team owner from Chennai.

Where is this all going Mr. Sreenivasan?

Posted by TRAM on (December 18, 2012, 17:46 GMT)

N.Srinivasan has a share with this franchise right? :-)

Posted by Surajrises on (December 18, 2012, 17:28 GMT)

The name Sun Risers is nice but why would they retain an oldie like Sangakkara? JP and Dale Steyn are a wonderful choice to retain... Ishant Sharma has not really delivered so no sense in y he should be retained either! The team still lacks the spark and only 2013 auctions will tell how aggressive are Sun TV in buying good players and how this team's composition changes...

Posted by   on (December 18, 2012, 17:17 GMT)

good one....but hyderabad should be added before the name....HYDERABAD SUN RISERS sounds awesome
