Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan have been picked to represent India A in two four-day games against West Indies A later this month. Gambhir and Zaheer were dropped from the Test side late last year, and Sehwag last played a Test in March. All three were ignored for subsequent A squads, but this call-up - coming just before the start of a fresh season - will give them hope for a national comeback. Also back in the fold was the 32-year-old Mohammad Kaif, who last played a Test in 2006.

These matches clash with the Champions League T20, which could have played a part in some or all of these selections. Missing from the India A four-day side that toured South Africa last month are M Vijay, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Shikhar Dhawan and Wriddhiman Saha, who will all be playing in the Champions League T20.

Yuvraj Singh, who was dropped for the Champions Trophy and the tri-series in the West Indies, was chosen to lead the one-day side against West Indies A, and also India Blue in the Challenger Trophy, the domestic season opener. Irfan Pathan was picked to lead India Red. Delhi are the third side in the tournament by the virtue of being defending Ranji Trophy one-day champions, and are expected to pick their team and coach soon.

Zaheer and Yuvraj have spent the time outside international cricket working on their fitness in France. Not picked for the A sides, Gambhir represented Essex in county cricket.

India A squad for the first four-day game: Cheteshwar Pujara (capt), Jiwanjot Singh, KL Rahul, Manpreet Juneja, Rajat Paliwal, Harshad Khadiwale, Parvez Rasool, Bhargav Bhatt, Ishwar Pandey, Mohammed Shami, Ashok Dinda, Rohit Motwani (wk), Dhawal Kulkarni, Paras Dogra

India A squad for the second and third four-day games: Cheteshwar Pujara (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Sheldon Jackson, Abhishek Nayar, Paras Dogra, Uday Kaul (wk), Parvez Rasool, Bhargav Bhatt, Dhawal Kulkarni, Zaheer Khan, Ishwar Pandey, Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Kaif

India A squad for the three 50-over games and one T20: Yuvraj Singh (capt), Unmukt Chand, Robin Uthappa, B Aparajith, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Jaydev Unadkat, Praveen Kumar, Sumit Narwal, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mandeep Singh, Rahul Sharma

India Red squad for the Challenger Trophy: Irfan Pathan (capt), Robin Uthappa, Abhinav Mukund, Saurabh Tiwary, Gurkeerat Mann, Kedar Jadhav, Smit Patel (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Shahbaz Nadeem, Abhimanyu Mithun, Umesh Yadav, Suraj Yadav

India Blue squad for the Challenger Trophy: Yuvraj Singh (capt), Akshath Reddy, Naman Ojha (wk), Sibsankar Roy*, Ankit Bawne, Abhishek Nayar, Manish Pandey, Piyush Chawla, Ankit Rajpoot, Vinay Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Iresh Saxena

September 23, 2013, 0950 GMT: Sibsankar Roy was named the replacement for Mandeep Singh, who was ruled out of action for three-four weeks due to a finger injury

karan sharma and mohit sharma. anyone knows if both are injured. I don't see any other reason for their exclusion.

Posted by Srikanth25 on (September 12, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

Ya this is very good move from BCCI, but i think the selection of M kaif is not a good move because recent performance of M kaif in domestic season is not well, and second thing about K L Rahul he selected only first test but not in 2nd & 3rd test, his recent performances are very good more than U chand, but he is sidelined by Selection commitie.

Posted by balajik1968 on (September 12, 2013, 7:30 GMT)

The selectors are doing a good job by looking at the captaincy post-Dhoni. Both Kohli and Pujara have been thrown into the mix. This is good because considering the amount of workload Dhoni is shouldering, we cannot look beyond 2 years for the man. The previous selection panel was pretty lousy in many aspects, and this was one of them.

Posted by balajik1968 on (September 12, 2013, 7:22 GMT)

Good selections. The selectors are looking at the options on hand. They are trying to strike a balance between youth and experience. The one thing I don't understand is the continued exclusion of Munaf Patel. He was dumped after a decent series in the Windies in 2011. Though he is no great fielder, but others have got a longer rope than he has. It is not very brilliant to say that the seniors should be excluded. 4 years back, Greg Chappell did this in Aussie domestic cricket, and look at the current state of the Aussie team. Any team should have a healthy mix of youth and experience. Let us not be too hasty in dumping senior players, if they are performing.

Posted by   on (September 12, 2013, 6:23 GMT)

The selection of sehwag, gambhir has no doubt given them some hope but i think their selection was more bcos of unavailability of few key members who toured SA. Anyways they should make good use of this oppurtunity though i feel WI A bowlers r least expected to trouble the indian baatsmen especially in these benign conditions. Even this duo performs, i dont think much should b read into their prfromance.Personally i feel india should look ahead of these two bcos v have already seen the worst in the consequetive white washes overseas.

Posted by   on (September 12, 2013, 5:23 GMT)

Karan Sharma and Mohit Sharma could have been included in the limited overs fixtures either against WI A or Challengers

Posted by jimbond on (September 12, 2013, 3:45 GMT)

In the past, we have seen Sehwag in full flow against good bowling attacks like Pak, WI, and Australia. But unfortunately when teams like SA and England have improved a lot, Sehwag has been a shadow of himself. Hope he regains his best and we can see him in full flow at least for an year against SA and England. Would be a joy watching Sehwag at his best against Steyn/Philander/Anderson. Zaheer khan is still among the two most penetrative bowlers in India today- along with B Kumar. He should be wisely used keeping his body constraints in mind. Gautam Gambhir still has at least five years of good cricket ahead of him. His replacement- Vijay still looks very much - a temporary arrangement especially against reasonable bowling attacks. Sehwag may be more comfortable in the middle (so is Rohit Sharma)- so there is a scope for an opener along with Dhawan.

Posted by cricketlover76 on (September 12, 2013, 2:13 GMT)

This selection panel seems to have a vision and clarity of thought. The previous selection panel was a disaster and had no clue whatsoever. It is good that senior cricketers are given a chance to justify their credentials before a hectic season. I hope Gambhir especially uses this chance and earns his chance back. India needs a quality left hand batsman in the middle order to replace Sachin and Gambhir has the right mix of experience and class to take up that position. He is too good a talent to be wasted.

This is great, glad to see some other young players getting a chance and ofcourse ZAK. All these A tours are making me very happy, BCCI is doing some justice to there money and power (excluding the SA saga =]). I think for SA we def need ZAK, the reason I say, he still bowls extremely well in tests, esp outside India. I mean take a look at last SA tour, he wasn't in first match and we got hammered, he comes back in second and we win. With Viru, I dont think we need batting help, we have enough resources, in regards to bowling, excluding Bhuvneswar, Umesh is wayward and Ishant is just Ishant. If sachin retires in Nov, then My playing XI for SA: 1. Dhawan 2. Vijay 3. Pujara 4. Virat 5. Rohit Sharma 6. MSD 7. Jadeja 8. Ashwin 9. Bhuvi 10. ZAK 11. Umesh. I know Rohit sharma would be a gamble, but I think he is talior made for middle order test. Lets hope we get a proper 3 test SA tour!! GOOD LUCK team INDIA!!!!

@Posted by xylo on (September 11, 2013, 18:53 GMT) "Based on form, Sachin should be playing for India A too."

Dear Xylo, What form are you talking about? When did we see him play, in recent times?

Posted by CandidIndian on (September 11, 2013, 22:53 GMT)

Zak deserves comeback if he is fit, as he did not get dropped due to bad form like Sehwag and Gambihr ,he was shown the door due to his poor fitness mainly.

Posted by SevereCritic on (September 11, 2013, 20:56 GMT)

And inform and fit Zaheer getting the new red ball with Bhuvi will be a fairly decent opening combination in places like NZ or SA where the pacers have ample help from the pitch and cloud coverage. I think India should use Zaheer like Aus uses Harris-- play him selectively with an eye on his fitness. (This is of course assuming he in form).

Posted by 2nd_Slip on (September 11, 2013, 20:01 GMT)

Virender Sehwag , Gautam Gambhir,Tendulkar,Vijay,R Sharma,Raina,Jajenja(sorry cant remember how to spell the name) and Dohni would be easy pickings for Styen, Morkel and Philander which is why it doesn't surprise me that the BCCI are looking for ways to shorten the series against SA or do away with it completely as they can foresee the embarrassment of yet another away series thrashing.

Posted by xylo on (September 11, 2013, 18:53 GMT)

Based on form, Sachin should be playing for India A too.

Posted by Thaju on (September 11, 2013, 18:32 GMT)

Where are kerala players like Jagadish, Sanju Samson, Sachin Baby and Sandeep Warrier?

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 16:53 GMT)

The selectors have got it spot on once again. Hats off to Sandeep Patil and his team. They have been doing a marvelous job time and again. They have given a perfect opportunity to the veterans. The Indian team have tough tours coming up in South Africa and New Zealand. So,we must have a perfect blend of youth and experience. I still believe that these seniors have some cricket left in them and they being dropped from the the Indian team might have just been the perfect jolt for them. Hopefully they would gain some match fitness and also form and thereby earning their places in the team, because at the end of the day, they are proven cricketers and the Indian team would only benefit from their presence.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 16:37 GMT)

I was waiting to see Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan playing together,be it in the India A team or India Red team.Im also happy that Irfan is also captaning the India Red team.Irfan will rock one more time, and I think team India could need him with his all-round abilities with both bat and ball.

Satisfied with recall of Mohammad Kaif,Sehwag,Gambhir,Zaheer and Yuvraj. But where is Harbhajan and Wasim jaffer would like them too also feature and been given a chance at redemption.

Posted by veerakannadiga on (September 11, 2013, 15:05 GMT)

Jose Puliampatta , spot on. 100% agree with your views regarding Zaheer Khan. He shud be selected as a bowling coach only and not as a player. His good days are over. He cannot keep himself fit for a whole series. Selectors please give youngsters like Mohit Sharma a chance instead of Zaheer Khan. Kaif's selection is absurd, the slot should have gone to Manish Pandey or Unmukt Chand or Gautam

Posted by fosterbat on (September 11, 2013, 12:56 GMT)

Love what the selectors are doing giving everybody a chance, age no bar.Just as it should be. But where is Waseem Jaffer?

Posted by android_user on (September 11, 2013, 12:53 GMT)

new breed of selectors include sandeep patil as chief selector. Why keep trying who have failed and have not done anything after the second and third chance given to them? its time to find next sachin or young kapil. zahir and yuvi's time has passed.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 12:49 GMT)

Sehwag, and Gambhir: Hope, it is primarily a gesture; and secondarily to give them a ' last ' chance. Nothing more than that.

To provide maturity & stability to the opening partnership? No way! They are as impulsive as the youngsters Dhawan & Vijay. In fact, in his new 'avatar. Dhawan bats with more maturity and balance!

Posted by ramli on (September 11, 2013, 12:07 GMT)

@Rajesh_Royal ... To brand Shikar Dhawan's batting as boring needs guts ... may be you were watching some other test match??? Just because they are seniors, does not guarantee their place to SA ... they need to bat well ... first in A games and then in Ranji trophy ... otherwise, we can stay with younger players ... at least their fitness and fielding levels are higher

Posted by nandhi on (September 11, 2013, 12:05 GMT)

1 Dhawan 2 Gambhir/Wasim Jaffer 3 Pujara 4 Sachin 5 Kohli 6 Sehwag 7 Dhoni 8 Bhuvaneshwar 9 Umesh Yadav 10 Ishant/Zaheer 11 Shami Ahmed/ Jadeja/ Mishra No need for Murali Vijay..waste in south africa... Jaffer can perform at 35 also..look how Chris Rogers make it count for Australia....I feel this line up would be a mix of experience and youth and is capable of beating South Africa in their own backyard.. Is Sandeep Patil & Co listening?

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 11:56 GMT)

ZAHEER should be roped into the India team, as soon as possible, as a Bowling Coach for guiding the new breed of young pacers; the way England is making use of the experience of Mushy for their spinners.

All the Indian coaches had been batsmen, and as such the young batsmen get enough guidance. But the bowlers are left in the lurch; particularly so in the case of pacers. Each does his own thing. Most of them do not understand strategy. As one of the readers posted, Yadav seems to be just bowling without any thought process behind it. Zak, is an expert in thinking through, as to how to get a specific batman out. The youngsters need that. Zak is the right resourse to tap that. Even language will not be a barrier.

We all had seen that the younger pacers always look comfortable in seeking and getting guidance from Zak - he, being a highly respected senior, with a brilliant past record to boot.

But, don't block a young pacer's slot with Zak. PLEASE.

Posted by itsthewayuplay on (September 11, 2013, 11:56 GMT)

First of all why not a settled squad for all 3 games? Secondly what have Sehwag Gambhir and Yuvraj done to earn their recall to the A squad. Rather than trying these guys opportunities, we should be looking to when Tendulkar retires and make a complete and clean break with the past. If we're going to lose, better to lose with inexperienced players.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 11:28 GMT)

We should have tried instead, Farokh Engineer, Chetan Chauhan and Kapil Dev. Are you kidding me? Why give chance to the old problems to crop up again? They were great but we have emerging talents to look forward to. Let us enjoy the trio's performance in the A games. Not think about their return to the Indian team.

Posted by SherjilIslam on (September 11, 2013, 11:22 GMT)

Posted by avi_b on (September 11, 2013, 10:35 GMT): Absolutely spot on regarding assessment of Zaheer Khan, would also love to see Viru Sehwag in the scheme of things, but being honest i think his best days are over now. Anyways, exciting times ahead for Indian Cricket.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 11:18 GMT)

sehwag, zaheer & gambhir r must for SA tour. Dhawan & Vijay have to really play exceptionally well against WI in 2 test matches to cement their place. Now with WI series ahead of SA selectors have enough time to look at all possibilities. If Sachin is thinking of his retirement after WI, we need these three there in SA tour, may be one of them can bat at 4 or 5. It all depends upon their performance against WI teams. I want to look upon following players for SA series- batsman-dhawan, vijay, kohli, pujara, sehwag, gambhir, rohit, jadeja bowlers-zaheer,ashwin,ishant,umesh,bhuvneshwar,ojha & may be 1 more fast bowler wk- dhoni, kartikh(may be)

Posted by avi_b on (September 11, 2013, 10:35 GMT)

I think it's a brilliant move by the selectors. They've been very impressive in their short tenure so far. I'm not so keen on Sehwag or Gambhir because the Indian batting line-up is top notch. What I can't wait to see is Zaheer making a comeback. The guy's a magician with the ball just like what Anderson is capable of for England. Indian fast bowlers except for may be B Kumar struggle for the most part. But if we add Zaheer to the pack it starts to look like a more formidable and balanced attack.

I'm sorry but Ishant has to go and we need to find new kids on the block to replace him. I had high hopes from Umesh Yadav but I think he lacks the ability to think on how to get a batsman out. He just comes in and bowls quick and in the process if he gets wickets well and good else he's taken to the cleaners. In the end it's the bowlers that win you test matches and Zaheer in my view can lead from the front.

Posted by android_user on (September 11, 2013, 9:31 GMT)

very good

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 9:19 GMT)

I don't think they can make a come back in to the senior team. It is very difficult to come back these three. This is a formality to take them in a four day game. It may be they show some good performance, but too late. If they selected, then who can replace for them. How they can make last XI. The current opening pair (Dhawan & Vijay) is in a very good form. So there is no chance for Sehwag & Gambhir.

Posted by Rajesh_Royal on (September 11, 2013, 8:45 GMT)

Good move...! and good news to all sehwag fans, of course me too big fan of him. We expect another big milestone to come back in international.. Because without sehwag and Gambhir the present opening pair was playing boring cricket which is not interesting though they are good. Rohit sharma is good test cricketer but not good opener in ODI.

Posted by Indian.Raj on (September 11, 2013, 8:34 GMT)

Everything is fine , everyone should get one last chance to prove ,,,, but why selectors are unfair with Wasim Jaffer, I feel really bad for this great talented batsman, You are giving chance to sehwag and gambhir again and again.... and again and again overlooking Jaffer.... I appeal all the Indian FANS....to support Wasim Jaffer,,,, if he was handle properly by our board, he would have been like Kallis, Amla, etc or does his beard is playing obstacle... or he dont have any god father in corporate form or in the board the way gambhir and sehwag has....

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 8:34 GMT)

The selectors deserve all the kudos, for many of their positive & forward looking steps. a) Try to build a team for the future.

b) Cast the net far & wide.

c) Give a chance to as many as possible.

d) Give strong messages to all (old or new), no position in the team can be his by right. e) Healthy completive spirit, for every single position in the team. f) Going mostly by merit, rather than regional pulls

But,… Only concern is about the old timers.

g) If it is fairness & justice to give them an additional window of opportunity; It's Ok. h) If it is a gesture all those who contributed immensely: It's OK.

i) If any of them prove to be still too good, taking them in: That's also OK.

j) If it is part of any PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: It is JUST NOT OK!

Overall: Congratulations to the new team of selectors for an excellent job.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

Too many cooks should not spoil the broth. Time for bench strength to be tested. The current selectors should be given one more term so that the team can be stabilised. Right player for the right format.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

In test we want an experienced opener in place of murali vijay. Because of future tour of south africa, where they have top class bowlers. So selectors are planning to give a chance to Old Guards of india.that is good too.All the Best you guys

Surprised not to see CM Gautham in any of the squads who had a good Ranji season, unless he is unfit.

Posted by SherjilIslam on (September 11, 2013, 7:34 GMT)

Well done selectors. Excellent planning and execution for ageing seniors, Perform or Perish is their mantra and with the current crop of performing young players at their disposal seems the best option to adopt. I realistically feel that Zaheer and Sehwag has much to offer to Indian cricket,Sehwag as suggested by many can bat in the middle order and Zaheer can guide and lead the in-experienced pace attack. Hope they return with full form and fitness

Posted by KishorKumar25 on (September 11, 2013, 7:18 GMT)

So many players tested, but could n't unearth one genuine fast bowler..! Indian test team needs fast bowlers to win abroad.

Posted by ReverseSweepIndia on (September 11, 2013, 7:16 GMT)

in SA we will need 6 batsmen, a keeper, a spinner and 3 pacers. 3 of these Bhuvi, Yadav, Zak and Ishant. 1 from Ashwin or Jaddu. Dhoni the great. Now coming to batting, Dhawan at #1, Pujara #3, Rohit #4 (yes he deserve his chance in longer format), Virat at #5. Now that opens up 2 slots (#2 & #6) Sachin, I am sure is not going. Probably Gambhir can Sehwag can fit in. It will be logical for Sehwag to come at #6. Facing Steyn in 1st spell and facing him in 3rd or even more will be better proposition for Sehwag. Not that Steyn will let the intensity down, but probably ball will be older and may be Steyn is tired (he is human too), which offcourse is not going to happen when Sehwag opens.

what to say one player who taught india to win from impossible situations . everybody left the field but he sticked arround with lower order and won matches for india in odis, AND WITH HIS ALLROUND PERFORMANCE HE SINGLE HANDEDLY WON WORLD CUP FOR INDIA, another LEGEND WHO SHOWED THE TASTE OF A TRIPLE HUNDRED TWICE and a double hundred which is the highest score by a player , and still maintaining 100+ strike rate after playing 251 odis and 80+ in 104 tests , who was compared with the great kingRICHARDS by the legends of the game. ANOTHER ONE when india is searching for a consistant opener while BIG MEN are droping he came forward and accepting all the challenges and providing the required balance in the THREE FORMATS , ANOTHER one no bowlers are making any marks , he came in to team and taught others how to utilise the weather and pitch conditions very quickly to his mates . no respect . all da best .

This has nothing to do with the form of these players, the real issue here is the amount of cricket that these players are being asked to play with very little time in between for these guys to rest and recuperate. No other cricketing nation in the world is subjecting its players to the kind of demanding and packed itenary that BCCI is asking of its players and if this does not stop India will soon have no consistent players on its team even the younger ones coming into the team. BCCI seems to be competing with itself on this issue (GREED) just look at the amount of cricket coming up for this Indian team its absolutely ridiculous and someone needs to talk to them about it and soon before its too late.

Good to see so many new faces in India A squad.Full praise to Sandeepji & co for giving Yuvraj (perhaps the most talented cricketer in India) the captaincy in List A games.Nice to see Kaifu back in for future plans. But really disappointed since Jagdish hasn't given a go again after that wonderful 91 against NZ A squad. Please tell me what went wrong with this prolific domestic scorer.

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 17:30 GMT)

Positive move by the selectors. However, I am surprised to see Harbhajan's name missing. Surely the best spinner in the last IPL (let's face it, IPL is a major yardstick for selecting so many players nowadays) deserves better. And keeping these seniors in the hunt will also help the youngsters stay on their toes. By the way those who are croaking on about Veeru and Zak's time having run out ought to take a fair standpoint and say the same thing about Sachin Tendulkar as well... Otherwise the double standards against possibly our greatest ever pacer and one of our all time Test legends will sound way too blatant...

It would have been a great oppurtunity to try out players like vijay zol, abhishek nayar , rishi dhawan and mohit sharma too , particularly in the longer format.. But congrats to the selectors for giving chances to someone like palliwal a chance as he has performed superbly well for d services team.. way to go..!! But I really don't know why rishi dhawan has been continuously ignored.. It seems India should still give another chance to lights of Zaheer Khan, as he has the experience and could lead well into the upcoming South African series away from home. An experienced bowler as Zaheer can be the difference in the tests and exploit the South African conditions like no other bowler in the squad. Though we lack experience in our bowling attack for years now, it's time to give the chance to the old horse to prove his point, as he has been very successful in the past against the proteas in tests.

It is difficult to say who should be left out, but the bowling line up needs a lot of work before the Boxing Day Test Match.

Zaheer is still our best bet!

Posted by Addu1 on (September 10, 2013, 17:08 GMT)

Nice move by selectors, really this players are worth, specially Kaif, he can balance the middle order in ODI and Test, Chand give him chance to play in 11

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 17:05 GMT)

And Finally IND fans have smile on their faces. WI tour was announced by BCCI & n numbers of voices to criticise on espncricinfo forums. A simple answer to why does the need of home tour is illustrated in this article and the plans brief here by BCCI. If not done here, IND would directly travel to SA leaving no chances for seniors as well as probables. It's OK that some seniors got umpteen numbers of chances but last chance should be given before calling off from the game & most important they should know personally where they are standing in the current scenario. Overall niced work by Selectors & well backed up By BCCI.

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 16:57 GMT)

I think Sehwag should again bat at opening slot.I am not too sure about Vijay..In the middle order i belive Rohit Sharma should come in...his technique can prove very crucial both in and out of subcontinent...yuvraj test days are over...Zaheer is still needed....and surely we can't easily neglect Gambhir ...Gambhir can actually come down the order...

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 16:48 GMT)

Gambhir needs to come back into the fold somehow, he was one of India's senior players, he has a lot more to offer Indian Cricket. For some reason I feel he got a raw deal, and was clubbed along with Sehwag when dropped from the team.

Judging from Sehwags performance in the IPL, his time might be done...unless he can rediscover his mojo from earlier.

Zaheer needs to be used sparingly, like how tendulkar is, he will be vital to the development of some of the younger fast bowlers in the team.

Posted by android_user on (September 10, 2013, 16:47 GMT)

masterstroke by selectors but what about Harbhajan singh. The veteran spinner has 600+ scalps & has past good experience outside india. How can u leave him??shocked.talking on form he was 3 highest wicketaker in last ipl. Yes we know he is aggressive but guys we r playing against good oponents so we must some attitude towards winning

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 15:26 GMT)

Irrespective of whether Sachin retires or not after the WI series, Sehwag should be batting at no.5 in SA. India needs his experience and explosiveness in the middle order. Plus he will be an asset facing the second new ball. Zaheer Khan should also make it to the test squad in SA. The likes of Smith have always struggled against him. An attack comprising of Zaheer, Umesh, Bhuvanesh , Ashwin and Jadeja could be a handful for the Proteas, who are known to panic if a few early wickets fall. Plus whatever happened to Sanju Sampson? His name is nowhere to be seen?

Posted by DevRimshaK on (September 10, 2013, 15:22 GMT)

I would have liked the inclusion of Vijay Zol... he seem to be a real talent. Anyways he will get his opportunities as there's ample time at his disposal to showcase the talent he's got... wishing him all the luck and success in the days to come...

Really hatsoff to Mr Sandeep Patil and co for their amazing planning for future. After WC2011, Indian cricket looks so high but after ENG and Aus tours it looks like Indian cricket is at its low. Cheeka and co failed to preapare a back up plan for the seniors which costed so mush in those tours. Now within span of 8-10 months the reserve strength of Ind cricket looks so strong with most of them really qualified enough. Giving most of the players atleast a chance each in one of the A or Blue or Green teams will help them improve their skills to fit in to next level of cricket. In last 3months , i can see atleast 30+ cricketers representing Ind/Ind A under diff captains in diff formats. So amzing. Really good job Sandeep and Co. Kudos.

Posted by armchairjohnny on (September 10, 2013, 14:47 GMT)

No, no, no. When did Indian selection policy become a retirement fest? This is a complete disaster of a selection. Clearly the BCCI lack the courage and authority necessary to put the future of Indian cricket about the egos of certain individuals who are now past their use by date. I don't buy into the idea of the Indian team neededing an 'experienced middle order'. Give some of the youngsters more games and they will GAIN more experience. You can't keep playing the same old veterans, they must fall away eventually to allow a new batch of players time to blossom into mature cricketers.

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 14:45 GMT)

Sehwag and Gambhir irrespective of how they perform unless they found some secret elixir are not going to do well abroad say like a Dravid and to some extent Sachin and Laxman. They are domestic and asian pitch giants....thanks for throwing Kaif a life line he is a good player and needs a spot in test matches

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 14:27 GMT)

Stars like Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan coming to a city like Hubli will be a massive boost to the cricket in the region... people are eagerly awaiting the match here!!

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 14:26 GMT)

Well done Selectors. It is good to give everyone a shot for the top spot and then chosse the best players in form. Competition is healthy and it brings the best out of everyone. It also creates a huge bench strenth and players hungry and ready to grab their opportunity. Indian cricket can only get better from here. Great strategy, keep it up Sandeep and team.

Posted by creekeetman on (September 10, 2013, 14:22 GMT)

seems so pointless, these 3, sehwag and zaheer in particular, are about at the end of their test careers. with the potential that I've seen in younger promising players, you would think this would've been the perfect opportunity to give them some experience.

Posted by CricketChat on (September 10, 2013, 14:19 GMT)

Shewag, Yuvraj and Zaheer should have played in Eng leagues to stay in shape and match fit. Good performances there would have been noticed by Ind selectors than domestic matches.

Posted by Chaitanyareddy90 on (September 10, 2013, 14:17 GMT)

Where is Pragyan oja? I dont know why selecters do not select him. The selectors may be thinking the oja is already international player he dont want practies matches or he is out of the form no need to select him.

Did i miss bhajji name in the above mentioned lists

Posted by anshu.s on (September 10, 2013, 14:09 GMT)

With announcement of so many squads selectors have surely cast the net truly wide , it sure got my head spinning at first but now i am getting hang of it , atleast none of batters have missed out , some of them are in India A for 50 overs , some for India A in 4-day games, those who are not in A squads are busy with there IPL franchises in CL T- 20 Competition , however certain selections are bizzare , Siddarth Kaul is not in any squad ,Aparjith is good enough for India A but not for India Blue or Green !!!

@Jugal Suthar, Vijay Zol is not selected in any of the squads because he will be captaining India U 19 team for the quadrangular series being held at the same time , but IMO he is too good for u-19 level and should be among big boys ...

Posted by vatsap on (September 10, 2013, 14:06 GMT)

Ridiculous selections. Sehwag and Gambhir have got umpteen chances. Sehwag for his attitude and Gambhir for his weakness outside offstump/subcontinent should have never been given chances, till they "consistently" scored in Ranjis. Same thing with Yuvraj, he will score a 200 in a dud wicket and the musical chairs for one middle order with Raina will start once again. Murali Vijay scored 2 big centuries against Australia and was consistent, he should be given another couple of series to prove his mettle. He has a temperament issue, but has got class. Instead of Sehwag/Gambhir/Yuvi we need to blood youngsters. Zaheer has to be given a chance, as our pace bowling stock is inexperienced. Of course the likes of Badrinath will never get their dues.

Posted by kassimpradeesh on (September 10, 2013, 13:56 GMT)

Where is Sanju V Samson, Sachin Baby and Jagadeesh who performed well against NZ A?

Posted by Amar_bw on (September 10, 2013, 13:52 GMT)

Amazing stuff from BCCI. The issue is that these matches will be played in India. Sehwag and especially Gambhir consistently fail out of the sub-continent. Agreed Sehwag in his prime was greatest in Australia but not much elsewhere. They both get success primarily in India. As far as Zaheer is concerned, India currently have many young talented bowlers while the problem with Zaheer is inconsistency and fitness.

Posted by TexanCricketer on (September 10, 2013, 13:52 GMT)

How about Munaf Patel? he was very consistant with his bowling and with his imaculate line and length he could be a good bowler. I am sure once he is back in domestic season, he will sure do well and back. Its very difficult job as there are so many young players coming up the rank but need a balance of experience and youth plus who ever get selected need to be in top shape physically and have to field very very well in modern day cricket with fast outfields.

Posted by dirtydozen on (September 10, 2013, 13:50 GMT)

Kaif is back... His record against west indies is good. Kaif had scored a test century in 2006 against windies. India may rely on services of z.khan and sehwag upto the tour of england. But vijay should be dropped after the dismal A tour in South Africa. The best opening combination would be of Dhawan,Sehwag,Gambhir,Jiwanjot Singh and Sharma for the WI,SA,NZ and Eng tour. And it would be good if Middle and Top order comprises Pujara, Tendulkar(upto SA tour), Rahane,Kohli,Kaif, Sharma comprising middle order. Dhoni and Karthik as wicketkeepers. And pace bowling led by Khan,U.yadav, B.Kumar, I.Sharma, Shami, and Pandey. With spin led by Ashwin, ojha, mishra and Harbhajan. This would be my probables for india test squad keeping Test world cup in 2017.

Posted by BigINDFan on (September 10, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

This is so much fun if some or all of the seniors perform well. It is time BCCI formalized 3 seperate teams for each of the format. Sehwag should play in the middle order and Gambhir in the top order for tests. Yuvi should be in the ODI squad. Zaheer should bowl in Tests and ODIs. Plus come up with a retirement or transition plan for the seniors starting with Sachin.

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

Some are saying dont change the opening pair. But if Sehwag plays in full flow he will disturb opposition bowlers hunting in pairs. He performed well after coming back in to the team during 2008-2010 as mentioned in one of the above posts.... Gambhir is truly a class player.Best player of spin in the world!

Posted by anoocmi on (September 10, 2013, 13:35 GMT)

Manpreet gony could have also been selected. He did well with chennai Super kings but strangely he has been of late ignored by csk as well as by the bcci

good move by selecters by picking a bunch of experienced and youth in same team Hats off to Indian selecters

Posted by SamRoy on (September 10, 2013, 13:24 GMT)

Sehwag has always been my favorite Indian batsman. I think he was the first Indian batsman to instill fear in the heart of bowlers especially on batting friendly tracks be it in Multan, Chennai, SSC or Adelaide. But it is high time selectors realize than Sehwag have nothing more to give as a test batsman. His reflexes have slowed and he is not what he used to be. Tendulkar lost his reflexes quite a bit after 2003 but still had a highly successful run in 2004 and another extended one between 2008-2011 (til world cup) because he had correct technique. Sehwag doesn't have good technique and footwork. He is hand-eye and when the eye fails........... Any way, any sane man will not take Sehwag and Tendulkar as part of the test team to SA unless of course as batting consultants!

Posted by anilbou on (September 10, 2013, 13:07 GMT)

why BCCI is testing a lot of players??? What if atleast 3 players from each squad perform fabulously.. Can they ignore the current playing 11 and pick the performers?? And why is praveen kumar being overlooked against shami ahmed, dinda and ishant??

Superb selection all together. I feels it is the way to go for India now. A lot of talented guys are coming from all part of India, and open up the selection for all of them. There is no point to select 15 or 16 players for ODIs and plan for next WC. Rotate all guys, who performing well in domestic in age group and A teams and make sure they all having match practice and experiance in all conditions. There is no point to think about future by compramising presents. Live in present, select whoever performing.

grt idea to give all seniors a chance but yuvi in tests and viru for odis must hv been included.may be mahi doesnt want to tamper with his odi side and why is bhuvi and umesh playing domestic games. bhuvi has prooved himself enough to be selected in odis directly. some surprise exclusions are pujara in odis and youngsters like unadkat manoj tiwary mandeep singh.

Strange logic. They have selected Basanta Mohanty for the on going series between India-A & New Zealand-A. He has not yet played a single match. Now he does not find a place in any of the teams, not even Challenger Trophy. Is Ranjiv Biswal listening?

What a joke by BCCI?, inspite of having former Indian captain in the side like Sehwag & Gambhir, how can they declare Pujara as captain?

Posted by   on (September 10, 2013, 12:14 GMT)

Fabulous selection. This panel seems to have a plan. With the SA tour and England tour coming up and with the Big Man ready to retire SOONER than later, a rejuvenated Sehwag [batting at 4?] and Gambhir in the squad batting either 1/2 or 6 will add some experience to the team. Please remember the most experienced of the batsman other than the three mentioned have collectively played two test matches [Pujara]in SA and Steyn is well rested and raring to go. As for ZAK hope he regains his fitness and is ready to go. On the bowling side too other than the "speahead" no bowler has played tests in SA. I am not ready to write off Gambhir [age 31] and Sehwag [35].

Finlay give the chance for guti, viru, yuvi & zaheer because some weakness in side of bating, bowling and filding in all formate (Test,ODI,T20) In ODI we can not find the opnear with Shikhar and in test side some expreness bowling attack is much needed when our team going to othe country like SA,NZ etc.

Good selection. But the selectors are continuing to overlook Karan Sharma who was the leg spinner that was very impressive both in Ranji Trophy and IPL6 last year. West Indian captain Darren Sammy who played for Sunrisers in IPL 6 will vouchsafe for the same. Balaji Rao deserved a chance. I don't know why the selectors keep going back to Sehwag, Zaheer and Gambhir. If they want to come back to Indian team they should perform in Ranji Trophy matches. By giving chance to them in A team means the selectors are denying the oppurtunities for some youngsters who are not exposed against a quality team. Selectors in recent times have made some excellent decisions viz sending A team to SA and giving younger crops a chance. But i fear this is not one of their best decisions..

This looks like a rehabilitation list. Sehwag, Zaheer, Gambhir, Kaif! I wonder what Kaif is doing in the list. With so many youngsters doing well at all levels, will anyone look at Kaif? At the moment there is only one possible batting position in the team. I dont think these two games will do anything for the batters. Only Zaheer can redeem himself and force the selectors to pick him ahead of a long season. I think Zaheer would have been in the reckoning anyway. Apart from a few surprises, this seems reward for good performances. Especially people llike Nayar, Kulkarni and Pandey have been rewarded. Rasool is being given more chances to see if he is ready for the big league. I would have liked to see Zol and Binny in the side to see if they can break into the big league. Windies is an easy team at home and I am sure all the three batters will succeed if given a chance. However, will that really push their cases? I really doubt.
