Sachin Tendulkar will become the first sportsperson to be conferred the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. The Prime Minister's Office made the announcement hours after Tendulkar brought down the curtains on a 24-year international career.

"Sachin Tendulkar is undoubtedly an outstanding cricketer - a living legend who has inspired millions across the globe," a PMO release said. "During the last 24 years, since the young age of 16 years, Tendulkar has played cricket across the world and won laurels for our country. He has been a true ambassador of India in the world of sports. His achievements in cricket are unparalleled, the records set by him unmatched, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by him exemplary. That he has been honoured with several awards is testimony to his extraordinary brilliance as a sportsman."

Speculation about Tendulkar getting the award has been around for years, and peaked in 2011 when the eligibility criteria for the award was broadened. Originally, the honour was for excellence in "art, literature, science and public services" but was amended to recognise "performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour".

In 2008, Tendulkar became the first sportsperson, along with chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, to receive the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour. Tendulkar received the Arjuna Award (a national award for distinguished sports persons) in 1994, and in 1998 he received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country's highest sporting honour. The next year, he was the recipient of the Padma Shri ( the fourth-highest civilian award).

Previous recipients of the Bharat Ratna include Nobel laureates Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.

@cricwick You make an excellent point. Sure Tendulkar has made billion of people happy for a very long time (including me; I still like to see him bat for at least in Ranji -- prob a far cry a yearning). We make a strong case for "Hall of fame" for these stars. My point was you can't dilute the contributions of people like the ones I had mentioned. I have great respect for Abul Kalam Azad who turned it down citing his memebership in the selection committee.

I first see your match in 1992 world cup against Pakistan you made 52 runs and took 2 wickets. From then I am your very big fan. I never miss your matches. Whenver you got out early I switched off my t.v and not interest to know, what happen to match. I always remind about you, in sleeping, eating, working etc. I think God give you extra powers and you score over 1000 runs in a day. I purchased a 16 gb pen drive to record last moments match, commentary, news programmes. And I keep it with me till my last breath. I show it to children and tell them about what is the meaning of sachin.

@nirvana_1959 I can understand your concern but have to look at the entire list. The last three receipents are Lata Mangeshkar, Bismillah Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who all are musicians and not statesmen or social workers. With due respect to all of them, I think Sachin has brought more accolades to Inida and joy to the people than any of the above three. That is not to take away anything from their greatness. And if a musician or a singer can get the highest award, why not someone from sport. I don't think sport is in anyway inferior to music or arts in this regard.

Posted by cricwick on (November 17, 2013, 18:12 GMT)

A befitting honour to this great icon of our sport and above all a wonderful human being. This award is a testimony to the impact you have had on the Indian psyche and the many joyous moments you have provided for the country. In a country that is as diverse and large as India you are and always will be an unifying factor. I can never forget the two mammoth knocks of yours(175 & 200) that I have watched in front of a packed common room in a hostel. Thank you Sachin for the memories and you deserve this HONOUR.

Yes, granted he one of the greatest cricketer India has produced and who has done very well for himself. What has he done for humanity and charity with the billons of dollar he has made? Does he give free cricket coaching classes or equipment to less fortunate youngsters who aspire to be a cricketer? Cricket is not the only sports, does he do anything to support other sports and sportsman as Rajya sabha MP? Hope to see him do something more with all the fame and fortune he's made for less fortunate.

Sachin isn't just Bharat Ratna but a Gem of the World. He is "THE GREATEST PERSON" I have ever seen, or in fact even heard about throughout the history. He is the person everyone should aspire to be. Dedicated to your work, always being honest, giving respect to everyone, helping others. He has done all that you can expect from a human being. I am Proud to be born in the Era of Sachin Tendulkar.

Dhyanchand was never conferred with Bharat Ratna. I am wondering if he did not qualify the new amendment in Bharat ratna award 2011 ( "performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour"). It is easy to be carried away with emotions. But India can't afford to ignore the real legend. I am sure in a more mature country like Australia , they would not have done this gaffe. Can Bradman be ignored... and someone like Waugh , Ponting, Chappel be honoured ahead of Don ???

Posted by vaidyar on (November 17, 2013, 4:11 GMT)

So now there'll be a controversy whether (1) a sportsperson should be given the BR, (2) if so, should Dhyan Chand have been given it fist, (3) if the flailing UPA govt's trying to gain some votes here.

The last day of his career after SRT did a great job of a farewell, salvaging his goodbye from BCCI's over-the-top preparations, and going just the way he wanted to go, the govt has to start a controversy.

As in his career, he'll never get one day or one moment to savour without someone trying to score points for themselves off him. Sad.

Sachin deserves the Highest Award in India. You call it what ever the name for the award, without any doubt in this century he deserves more than anybody else.

The difference between Sachin and other cricket greats is simply with the standard of behaviour he set for the world. People may forget this standard of personal attitude but cricket world was lacking of this. Now, we got all from Sachin. I pray for you to be the longest survival of this world - it will be another record. Go Sachin Go for this, never retires from there!

Posted by nirvana_1959 on (November 16, 2013, 22:58 GMT)

As much as I love Sachin I don't agree with this. Only 43 people have been awarded this. You can't have someone from Sports & Leisure alongside Rajaji, Sarvapelli, Patel, Zakir Hussain, Rajendra Prasad, Abdul Kalam, Shastri and other greats. It has diluted and demeaned Bharat Ratna. I would have been a prouder Indian had a soldier who sacrificed his life in Cargill been given this award.

Posted by ToTellUTheTruth on (November 16, 2013, 21:47 GMT)

He was a Bharat Ratna in 1992. Too bad, it was only recognized now. He was always the "Man of the nation" for struggling, yet prospering India from early 90's, so what do we care about a US magazine realizing that after some 20+ years? Looks like they (both the Indian government and the foreign magazines) missed the boat by a long mile.

Dear Sachin, you deserve this honour. You have been our country's GREATEST sportsman of the modern era. You are a true RATNA (diamond) and a heart throb of billions of cricket lovers worldwide. Best wishes Little Master !!!

I am from nepal and now in australia I am a great fan of indian cricket and cricketer , among them sachin is always great and remembered even he has retired from international cricket. all of us nepalese wish for him ,and congratulate to great legend of cricket history. specially young generation of nepal is inspired by him and his colleagues like RD, SG,VVS LAXMAN AND EVEN dhoni , and kholi but one an only question we ask ourself, even india is giant nation of cricket world and they have been supporting all over the world, but by being neighborhood country I am just thinking why bcci is not supportung country like nepal , wh8ch are trying to evolve in cricket world.

I haven't seen a more humble person. Even today, during his speech, there was not a bit of arrogance in his voice after what he has achieved throughout these years. Sachin's cricket was not about the records he possess, records may get broken one day (records are meant to be broken), but it was the true spirit of his that he played cricket with. He played the gentlemen's game like a true gentleman. Wish you all the best for your future life and may the future generations of cricket take inspiration from you. Love from Pakistan, ThankYou Sachin !!!

Besides all the Innumerable records and 24 years of Selfless Devotion to the Country and the Game Of Cricket .. he is A Great Human being whose Virtues are so great that ppl believe that Thr's Part of Almighty in him Who was Playing the Game in Grtst possible way in the era.. I think there should b two periods or two eras in cricket. One is BS(Before Sachin) and another one is AS(After Sachin). Players can only imagine what he has done for cricket but cant even think of doing that..Hats off to Sachin...i salute u and u r the one with whom i have spent 24 years of life...cant forget those moments when u make me smile, when u make us proud by winning matches for India..will miss u forever....

Posted by kuldeep1109 on (November 16, 2013, 17:18 GMT)

24 years of Sachin were like a movie that had it all. He made people smile, laugh, cry, and feel alive. Indian cricket and the country itself in general has seen a great transition from the 90s to where we are now. Sachin has been one constant force through this constant change, making people go through all the above emotions and entertaining them always. Anjali Tendulkar said today that she can imagine Cricket without Sachin, but not Sachin without Cricket. As an ardent cricket fan and that of Sachin, I would like to believe that it is equally unimaginable that Cricket without Sachin will ever be the same again. The Kohlis, the Sharmas and the Pujaras will come, entertain, perform exceptionally well and go, but there will never ever be a cricketer and a human being whose presence will be cherished and absence be mourned as much as Sachin Tendulkar!! Here's to Sachin, The God who propogated Cricket the Religion across the world!! The Bharat Ratna is truly deserved!!

Sachin You have inspired many generation - You saw batted with 3 cricketing generations; We love You; Thank You Sachin Tendulkar

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 16:34 GMT)

SACHA INDIAN---Sachin Tendulkar , is the God chosen true human being who is a living legend. It is not he runs he scored but it is how he is running his life, a remarkable achievement among all of us. His life history should become a syllabus in all school books, so that then new generation will remember him as Buiddha, Gandhi and Nehru, in history of India. The most important aspect of his success, was the family values he have shown for his success. The youngsters should know the value of their parents, spouse and children, sisters, brothers, teachers, friends, room mates, colleagues and many many human beings who play some role in their life. But for his family support, he would not become a world class sportsman. All awards desrve Sachin ! Sachin only!

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 16:13 GMT)

Wow! I wouldn't say it was not deserving, but I never really wondered if Sachin is the only exceptional sports person India had...especially at genius level. What about Anand and the olympians?

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 16:12 GMT)

There are people making comparisions among sachin, bradman, vishwanath anand for various reasons. One thing I would like to make here is that no one comparable to other as every individual is unique in their own way. Having said that, If you really want me to compare, then i would say no one could have played for a career span of 24 years without controversies, injuries, and above all bearing the dreams of a billion people for all these years sachin is the only exception. There were days when opposition felt " get out sachin u will win the match". you could observe this phenomenon was no where in the world cricket except in India. Comparing to bradman, sachin himself admitted that bradman is incomparable. That is the humility and dignity of Sachin. About Bharat Rathna, He is great son of the soil as he inspired many people by playiing the game with such a dedication which means what ever you aspire to do you must love and give dedication. So fittingly sachin deserves it

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (November 16, 2013, 16:06 GMT)

@Robbie Obrian Kallis Superior to Sachin in What ? Avg?. Sachin too was averaging higher than him 3 years ago and soon Kallis avg too will come down just like Sachin. But he pales in comparison when you consider his avg/tons against Aus or Eng. Sachin at helm destroyed many great bowlers(lately steyn). I don't remember kallis doing the same. Sure an inflated avg of 73 against Indian bowlers puts him a head above Sachin but we all know how destructive kallis was against good bowling attacks.

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 16:04 GMT)

For those who are raising eyebrows on Sachin's 'Bharat Ratna'....

A man who inspires a generation, make people believe, make people love their country, sets examples of being a great human to not one but many generations... should not be given Bharat Ratna?? Just because he is from a sports fraternity? As Harsha Bhogale said ... he put India in the Map when the country was over coming economic crises, when the country was taking strides for a better and brighter future... sachin was the role model to look at for the people. So what he was from sports. If you see... sporting successes of a country directly reflect the prosperity and well being of the nation ... and it is because of people like Sachin.

He never asked to be called God. His silence doesn't imply his affirmative.... Remember Speech is Silver but Silence is Golden!!

You can debate as much, but bharat ratna deserves Sachin.

Posted by ketaann on (November 16, 2013, 15:47 GMT)

he really deserves that. What a personality !!

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 15:15 GMT)

Cant believe still there are such people in India criticizing for anything and nothing, when the whole cricketing world , greatest players , other sports personalities pouring their comments on Sachin. Waste of time reading such nonsense

Posted by HegdeSA on (November 16, 2013, 15:11 GMT)

Other recepients had their prestige enhanced by receiving Bharat Ratna, but by receiving it Sachin has enhanced the prestige of this award ! But other sportpersons like Leander Paes and Vishwanathan Anand also deserve this award for their stellar deeds in international sports !!

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 15:02 GMT)

@ pull_shot yeah yeah yeah and if Bradman had played as many tests as Tendulkar he would have scored 120 test centuries, I have just stated that Bradman was a far superior batsman with Tendulkar as the second best ...... I have never mentioned anything about his behaviour, regarding pressure .... that applies to all sports people no matter what .... if they cannot man up then they should get out

Posted by Un_Citoyen_Indien on (November 16, 2013, 14:41 GMT)

@Sanjay MMS: I second that motion. Vishy Anand for Bharat Ratna.

Posted by pull_shot on (November 16, 2013, 14:38 GMT)

@ Robbie Obrian He is g8t because not only of his achievements in cricket field but off d field. Didu ever seen him misbehaving or sledging. He has played cricket as gentleman's game,m ore over when u compare players of different countries just check there backgrounds from which they evolve. Sachin have to play on d burden of 1 billion indian expectations so some times it is hard to express himself in batting and india has never good bowling (expect for some years when Zaheer, ishant, sreeshanth and bhaji inform so easily we r on No 1 spot in tests) when opposition piles runs and when india was batting they can be more attacking fields, thats d problem when india face when Aussie on prime, So good bowling reduces d pressure on batsman which kallis, pointing both played with freedom. So i hate to say this but if Sachin played for SAF,ENG,AUS he would have scored atleast 125 centuries as there won't this much pressure. India and pakistan players play under more pressure than any others

Posted by SanjayMMS on (November 16, 2013, 14:26 GMT)

Chess is our own game and is India's gift to the world. Chess is played in every nook and corner of the world and it is a matter of great pride that the greatest player of our times is an Indian. No body deserves the Ratna more than Vishy Anand.

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 14:16 GMT)

so many people are saying that Vishy deserve Bharat Ratna award. I feel main reason why he is not getting is, he just excelled in the sport but he is not a true role model for Indians as he left India long back in order to concentrate on the sport and he openly told it. if you see, India is not his atleast half home now. Where as Sachin, remained role model to millions of people in India as a Human Being. you can not compare Vishy with Sachin.

Posted by android_user on (November 16, 2013, 14:07 GMT)

please all of you keep politics out of this. no politician has served the nation like sachin did. we indians can never be satisfied cmon guys

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 13:49 GMT)

@Dishant Saingar ..... yes I have seen much footage of Bradman playing, he played on more difficult pitches than those prepared solely for batsmen, they were never covered during Bradman's era ..... which makes your comments rather foolish and childish .... Kallis is on a par with Tendulkar and may well become superior

Posted by VinodGupte on (November 16, 2013, 13:35 GMT)

Sorry, but chess is not a sport and Vish Anand is not a sportsman. chess is as much a "sport" as snake and ladder or poker. these two need as much muscle as chess. having said that, Vish Anand is a legend in his own right and he may be given a bharat ratna now that the rules say unparalled contribution in "any category".

congrats to SRT. this was coming although it would have been nice if he got it when he was not part of rajya sabha. there is something wrong with the govt awarding one of them with bharat ratna.

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 13:29 GMT)

SRT 200 deserve this award more than any sportsman in entire world. I am happy that inidans have opened their heart and giving respect to greatest legend at right time.

Posted by GrtIndia_Ann on (November 16, 2013, 13:19 GMT)

I came across some people who often complain about giving this prestigious award to sportsperson claiming that they havent done any service to question is what service have Lata Ji, Bismillah Khan and other legends of Art have done to nation..did they fed the hungry or did they design sky flying just excelled in their fields...not that I am against these legends getting BharatRatna.....I mean if these legends like Lata Ji, Bismillakhan etc are eligible to get this does any sportsperson ......

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 13:19 GMT)

Most of the people posted here are cricket maniacs, He may be the greatest cricketer, iconic character all that is fine. But surely does not deserve Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. Very difficult to digest he is one among the great holders of this award like Abdul Kalam, Mother Teresa, Dr Ambedkar, Satyajit Ray, Sir C V Raman, Dr M S Subulakshmi, few to mention. There are other civilian awards like Padmashree, Padma Vibushan which would have conferred on him. Its all politics, Elections are round the corner. Cheap politics to garner votes of Sachin's Fans.

Posted by   on (November 16, 2013, 13:17 GMT)

@ Robbie Obrian, have you seen Bradman playing? . You just can't two people of two different eras. And if you wanna compare someone then keep it to Australia. Don't just publish such rubbish comments on this blog. There is huge difference between the conditions in which both the legends played. There are many other great cricket experts who have already said that the two legends just can't be compared. And I don't think that you have a cricketing brain superior to them. But some foolish people like you will never understand that. I respect Bradman very much due to his stats only because I have never seen him playing. But Sachin according to me is the greatest living legend I have seen playing. Humbleness, commitment, dedication, talent, very down to earth nature(and his last farewell speech just sums it up.) are the very qualities of Sachin. The words are just not enough to describe the greatness of Sachin. He is indeed the "God of cricket" & the best cricketer I have seen playing.

Posted by 504429641 on (November 16, 2013, 13:07 GMT)

though happy that Sachin finally gets it, a bit sad that there are other deserving sport personalities who deserve Bharat Ratna. They are: 1) Dhyanchand 2) Vishwanathan Anand. In the current situation, if Vishawanthan Anand wins current world series against Magnus Carlson, then he truly deserves Bharat Ratna.

Posted by blade_pakkiri on (November 16, 2013, 12:56 GMT)

If any sportsperson in India deserves the Bharat Ratna first, it's Viswanathan Anand 5 times World Chess Champion. No other Indian sportsperson even comes close to his achievements. It's sad that he has not been considered at all.

I don't know whether there has been a sportsperson who has received such intense love and adoration for such a sustained period of time. Sachin is about records and much, much more. In Sachin, something of spirit of India is captured. It's a great decision to award him with Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India). He deserves it folks, he richly deserves it. Surely there are other Indian greats (sportsperson & non-sportsperson) who deserves the award, but let us not be bitter today. Let us be happy for this great sportsperson and one of the greatest Indian, ever. Hail unto you, Tendulkar! Thank you for everything.

What an honor for this award, it's should be feeling proud going to the real 'deserving' person... Its an more honor to award,,, than to Sachin... Lucky award, finally caught Sachin on the last day of his cricketing life... Congrats to both... :)
