Manoj Tiwary and Robin Uthappa will lead the two India A sides on their tour to Australia this July where they play two four-day matches against Australia A before participating in a quadrangular one-day tournament. South Africa A and Cricket Australia's National Performance Squad will join the two teams in the quadrangular.

Tiwary, who didn't play a first-class game in the domestic season, will be the captain for the four-day side, and while he will stay back for the one-dayers he will hand over the captaincy to Uthappa, who has forced his way back into the national side with a stupendous IPL season. Uthappa has been picked for the four-day matches too, along with his Ranji-, Irani- and Vijay Hazare-winning Karnataka team-mates Karun Nair and KL Rahul.

However, none of the Karnataka bowlers has made it to either of the sides. Test hopefuls Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra are the big names in the four-day squad. In the quadrangular series, Mohit Sharma, Akshar Patel and Karn Sharma will try to stake a claim for England ODIs.

The quadrangular series, ending on August 2, will be more important in terms of selection because India are due to play a five-ODI series in England later that month. This is also the time when India will start locking in on a combination for the World Cup in Australia early next year.

The A tour will begin with the four-day games in Brisbane, scheduled to start on July 6 and July 13. The team will then play two round-robin stages in the quadrangular, scheduled to start on July 20, before the final on August 2.

The tour will be the first major series for India A in 2014. In 2013, the team had toured South Africa in August, and apart from the four-day games they also participated in a tri-series that also involved Australia A. India A then hosted New Zealand A and West Indies A for first-class and limited-overs matches in September.

Squad for four-day matches Manoj Tiwary (capt.), KL Rahul, Jiwanjot Singh, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Karun Nair, Naman Ojha, Pragyan Ojha, Umesh Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Anureet Singh, Rajat Paliwal, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, B Aparajith

Squad for quadrangular series Robin Uthappa (capt.), Unmukt Chand, Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Sanju Samson, Parvez Rasool, Akshar Patel, Dhawal Kulkarni, Rishi Dhawan, Mohit Sharma, Karn Sharma, Rahul Shukla, Manan Vohra, Jaydev Unadkat

Robin Uthappa and Manoj Tiwari will be looked at closely by the selectors. Both looked really good in the IPL. Uthappa with his confidence sky high could be eying an openers spot in the test and odi spot. Tiwari has played in the test side but will be watched for overseas performance. This A side has lots of youngsters who would be also watched for performances. More than the batsman the bowlers will be watched closely.

This is tiwary's only chance, failure here along with bangladesh will mean another season of domestic, by which time the world cup squad will be secured and his chances of playing for india again will be slim given his age and all the other upcoming talent.

In Australia, England, West Indies, S. Africa & New Zealand we saw one all rounder spinner more we need. In south Africa because of that only one match finished draw. We already given chance to mishra, ojha, aswin and jadeja. But only one success is jadeja. Give chance to ashkar Patel & parvez in 4 day too. Three fast bowlers and 2 all rounder spinners.

Great chance for Youngsters to prove themselves... Wish them to perform well in all matches.

This is good selection for 4-day Tests & ODIs. Many suggested Samson should have been selected for Bangladesh tour, but before selecting to Indian Team, he has to prove in domestic & India A tours, this is the proper way to come. The Selectors did the right job. Selectors have had belief on Tiwary, he was in good form when he got injury, so as soon as he back from injury, Tiwary is rightly got selected. This is great opportunity for him to prove this time. Only one concern is Umesh Yadav selection, he should have in England Test Squad instead of Aaron. This team will win both the 4-day tests & quadrangular series.

for all who questioning about the selection of rayudu,I jus want to tell you one thing the players all you mentioned were playing good from last 2 or 3 seasons but rayudu is performing reasonably well from long time and performed reaosnably well in indian side too.infact he played better than rahane in the indian side.first know this before u question his selection

This year in the Irani cup final, Karnataka won by an innings and 222 runs Vs Rest of India. Vinay Kumar took 10 wickets and yet he does not find a place in the India A side! However 6 players from that losing 'Rest of India' side are retained in India A side. How Bizarre?

Posted by Batmanian on (June 12, 2014, 17:50 GMT)

Great to see India A making this tour, especially the first class component!

Posted by Nampally on (June 12, 2014, 15:27 GMT)

Alloting Dhoni as a Captain for all 3 Formats has deprived India OF an alternate Captain. Manoj Tiwary, Rohit Sharma & Pujara should be the 3 contenders for the Test Captaincy. Tiwary & Rohit have already captained their provinces whilst Pujara has been captaining the India A Teams for the past 2 years. The Selectors should have given Rohit Sharma or Pujara the Captaincy of the Indian team for the England Tour. They missed a golden chance. Dhoni is a poor captain- especially for Tests + has the worst overseas record of nearly 100% Losses. I am glad that Manoj Tiwary is given the Captaincy of the 4-day team. Teams selected include most of the favourite. Surya Yadev is the only missed batsman. Chand had an outstanding batting record in Australia as the India U-19 Captain as did Sandeep Sharma & Aparajith. Hence their choice is justified. Sadly at least 4 players chosen in these squads were omitted from Indian Squad for England. That will hurt Indian performance badly + Dhoni's captaincy!

Posted by CricketMakdi on (June 12, 2014, 14:51 GMT)

There should have been one or two bowlers at the least from Karnataka. Although Vinay was decisive as he ripped the top order every time.

Posted by aby_97 on (June 12, 2014, 13:13 GMT)

Manoj Tiwary as Captain doesn't draw too much confidence. His personal form hasn't been great off late, So how can he deliver the confidence to other players on the field.

Posted by goldenpower on (June 12, 2014, 12:08 GMT)

Why Should not Select Rishi Dhawan, Kedar Jadhav for four day Matches?.They were perform well in test matches. Now we will given chance to right player to correct match.

Posted by Sushant_H on (June 12, 2014, 11:29 GMT)

At a glance, looks like a decent selection of the 2 teams...players in the 4-day team seem to be picked based on their First Class performances & those in the one-dayers squad are picked looking at the IPL (& to an extent the Vijay Hazare trophy). For a change, the bowling departments of both the squads look stronger than the batting, & rightly so, since they will be playing on bowler-friendly pitches. On the flip side, i dont seem to agree with a few selections (although one can never be happy with each & every player of any 16-man squad!). For starters, i would have included Vinay Kumar in the 4-day team & made him its skipper. Manoj Tiwary would be better at captaining the one-day squad. Also, the 4-day team surely requires one seam-bowling all-rounder like Rishi Dhawan in Australia, instead of 2 specialist spinners (Ojha & Mishra). Also dont think Unmukt Chand has done enough to justify a selection. Lets hope we find some good death-overs bowlers & batsmen who can negotiate bounce.

People are complaining here that karnataka players are not considered. But no one said anything when Rajasthan won 2 ranji's in a row and none of their players were given chance. Double standards are in full flight here.

y no yusuf .. he played very well in domestic n ipl as well

Posted by MohammedSajid on (June 12, 2014, 5:16 GMT)

I don't no why BCCI is giving so much preference to Ambati Rayudu.........

Posted by Kashi0127 on (June 12, 2014, 4:59 GMT)

Selectors grow up! Selections based on IPL performances alone is ridiculous. Karnataka won several domestic events this year and domestic cricket is lot more competitive or at least rwasl cricket than IPL. Not single Karnataka bowler ? A team that bundled out all the opposition this year. Most bizzare

Posted by   on (June 12, 2014, 4:26 GMT)

Just saw the cricket schedule and it shows that India's tour of england is the last before the world cup. Is it true? i remember of a tour of Australia as well prior to the world cup. it that no more on the cards? or is it going to be one of the last minute BCCI intervention into the cricket schedule yet again??

Posted by   on (June 12, 2014, 4:20 GMT)

Interesting play this. Seems to giv an inside on the team that would play in england too. Just a confirmation about the one day side, when will the quadrangular be played? just as to ensure that the players playing the quadrangular have a chance to also play in the england ODI's. India have 2 major away tours with one in england and other in Australia before the World Cup begins next year. I would from now ignore the home games and base my team selection solely on the performance of the players on the away matches. Indian batting line up is still a reason for worry. Ashwin as a spin bowler on away conditions is way below par. I'd rather go in with all round spinners like jadeja, rasool and akshar patel and stick to genuine swing and pace bowlers. Like to see jadeja bat higher as well. But with Dhoni and his instincts Ashwin will surely remain. Good to see Manish getting a chance in the A-team. He made an impression from the U-19 worldcup with Kohli and deserves an opportunity.

Posted by   on (June 12, 2014, 4:20 GMT)

bizarre selection. highest run getter in Ranji trophy not selected for the four day games, while a guy who has hardly played a first class game is made the captain...karun nair not selected for the one-dayers is also disappointing...his temperament can be useful in high pressure matches...

Posted by   on (June 12, 2014, 1:55 GMT)

only 2 4-days game why not 4 or 5 ?

Posted by TimeKiller on (June 11, 2014, 23:41 GMT)

Triple crown (Ranji, Irani and Vijay Hazare this year) winning Karnataka bowling unit does not find a single place in either India-A teams! What more does one have to do, to be noticed by these selectors?

Posted by Nampally on (June 11, 2014, 20:54 GMT)

Poor excuse of including Uthappa as an "after thought" in the India A Team. He is the #1 choice of opening batsman for Indian Tour of England- the whole squad has 3 suspect opening batsmen. Indian fortunes depend upon batting which in turn depends upon the opening batsmen. India got white washed in the last Tour because Gambhir & Sehwag were huge Failures. All focus this time should have been on opening batsmen & opening bowlers. Uthappa, Nair + U.Yadev & Sandeep Sharma the missing 4. These 4 should be in the Indian squad- NOT in India A. Even now it is not too late to change. India needs "Right Horses for the Right courses". Uthappa has been knocking at the door since 2 years. He was in Peak form for T20 WC 2014. When he was dropped he showed his class in IPL 7. His Ranji + Domestic Tourney scores last season were excellent. At 28 he is at his best but an "Outsider" for the Indian Selectors. Easy to predict the Dhoni's XI with a huge ? against the opening bats. Sad Goof-up!

For four day Matches Chidambram Gautam or Mahesh Rawat should have been the WK choice

Posted by Alexk400 on (June 11, 2014, 18:24 GMT)

I am only interested in Jiwanjot Singh Chouhan. I do not why , i think he will play for india soon. Call it gut instinct. Never heard of him though.

Good to see Unmukt Chand in the team. Its high time he should cement his place.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 17:12 GMT)

Happy for Rahul, Jiwanjot, Rajat, Rishi, Karun, Sandy, Kedar - Due weight given to domestic performances.

Well done selectors!Focus should be to identify potential players who can play on Australian wickets - who knows some of them may end up playing the world cup.

Hope that Dhawal Kulkarni, Akshar Patel & Rishi Dhawan can do well on the tour. We'll need bowling all-rounders in Australia.

Whoever crying for dinesh karthik , think about the Asia Cup, he made lot of mistakes in keeping, dropped catches and missed crucial stumpings including kumar sangakara, and contributed with bat

Posted by S_M_G on (June 11, 2014, 17:03 GMT)

harshad khadiwale can't play moving ball. I was really disappointed to see him fail againg Mumbai. Pravin Kumar needs one more season of anger management. With other two, I am ok with your suggation.

Posted by Chaitanyareddy90 on (June 11, 2014, 16:23 GMT)

Praveen kumar, rishidhawan, harshad khadiwale,k.jhadav rerlaces anureet singh, jaspreet, jiwanjyoth, paliwal. Why selector making same mistaken they do not selected any pace all rounder in oversis tours. rishi dhawan must be in four day squad as a all rounder.and praveen must be selected becaz their are no good swing bowlers in four day squad. In one day squad milind kumar(delhi). khadiwale replacea unmukth and samson. Some in consistency in samson he will be played another domestic season.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 15:56 GMT)

Finally a good move from Selection panel.

They are trying to understand the suitable players under Australian conditions. Those who perform well in that tour might be considered for WC.

Akshar Patel(Allrounder and leg spinner), Dhawal Kulkarni, Rishi Dhawan(Allrounder and fast bowler), Mohit Sharma, Karn Sharma are the bowlers to watch out for. Sanju Samson might be watched for his keeping and batting skills. Second wicketkeeper role.

Robin Uthappa , Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav are players to watch out for openers role considering Rohit sharma and Dhawan's dbubious record in foreign pitches.

My Team in final XI for Quadrangular series:

Robin Uthappa, Kedar Jhadav, Manish Pandey, Sanju samson, Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Rishi Dhawan, Akshar patel, Dhawal Kulkarni, Mohit Sharma, Jaydev Unadkat

Posted by razajawahiri on (June 11, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

why mohit sharma?bad selection.samson must be selected for four days game.and no yusuf pathan as well he should be give chance.just ok about selection.all the best for all the players and congrates.

Posted by desiboy454 on (June 11, 2014, 15:28 GMT)

This will be good, I am glad to see some new faces, especially with the WC and tour to Aus coming soon. This will give an idea as to who the players are that can handle foreign conditions.for the 4day match: not a big fan of the players selected. 1. Uttapa 2. Jiwanjot Singh 3. KL Rahul 4. Tiwari 5. Nair 6. Rayadu 7.Aparjeet 8. P. Ojha 9. Yadav 10. Sandeep 11. Anureet. For the Odi squad I like it: 1. Uttapa 2. Pandey 3.Samson 4.Tiwari 5. Rayadu 6. Yadav 7.Aksar 8. Rasool/ Sharma 9. Rishi Dhawan 10. Mohit Sharma 11. Dhawal Kulkarni.. Personally Batting looks good, bowling a little weak. Maybe Irfan should have been given a go to see how he does, as his all round capabilities are an asset in foreign conditions. My WC15 XI: 1.Uttapa 2. Dhawan 3. Virat 4. Rohit 5. MSD 6. Raina 7. Jadeja/Irfan 8. Ashwin/Mishra (dont see anyone else) 9.Bhuvi 10. Mohit 11. Umesh... Bhuvi Provides swing, Mohit death bowling, Umesh Pace. Rohit & Raina in the middle are better than Rayadu.

DK was unlucky to be born at the same time as Dhoni. Once Dhoni took the gloves DK mostly played as a replacement when Dhoni was rested/injured. Never had time to settle. He is still young. Could've been included in the A squad.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 14:55 GMT)

good to see Kedar jadhav been included in the quadrangle series. but he should have also been a part of the four day game instead of k rahul or someone else.... he is good mature player...

Surya Kumar Yadav is missing

Robin Uthappa Manan Vohra Karun Nair Manish Pandey Sanju Samon Surya Kumar Yadav Akshar Patel Rishi Dhawan Manoj Tiwari Sandeep Sharma Jaspreeth Bumrah is my choice

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (June 11, 2014, 14:50 GMT)

Uthappa should be in the first team don't know how India don't select him ? he will be needed in England.

Posted by amit_devil on (June 11, 2014, 14:21 GMT)

I was hoping to see Vijay Zol in the line up. He is a good talent and better long term prospect for India than some of those selected. Bowling looks thin again - reflection of our bowling resources can be seen at all levels. I agree with others - Dinesh Karthik deserves better.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 14:09 GMT)

Good selection its time to look beyond the past and players of past DK has had his luck never made good the opportunities given he was replacement for dhoni whenever he didnt play neither good behind stumps nor with bat.Pathan brothers are history now.UV depends on how good he is bangladesh if he plays well good else curtains

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 13:47 GMT)

Dinesh Karthik cannot complain. He has been given enough chances but did not take it. Why is Sanju Samson only in the OD squad? He should have been in the longer version too. Baba Aparajith should also be in both squads.

Kedhar Jadhav, the top scorer in ranji 1st class last season is not in the 4day squad? what is the use of performing in Ranji trophy if ur not picked, in spite of being the highest run getter as well as highest strike rate

Posted by Triple_A on (June 11, 2014, 13:09 GMT)

Great squad selections from Patil and co. They are doing a MUCH better job than Srikanth and co. Good to see some really young and some completely new faces touring Australia and gaining experience.

It's interesting to note that Karthik has fallen so much out of contention of late. Last year he was playing #4 in the Indian team; now he cant even find a place in the A squad. Also, really sad to see Praveen miss out - I think he bowled brilliantly in the IPL in the few chances he got and was a strong contender for the WC15. As for the people hankering over the Pathan brothers, they are done and dusted - Irfan couldnt even get a spell of 4 overs from his IPL franchise and Yusuf played well in only one innings and flopped in the rest. It's good that we are finally looking ahead of those two.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 12:56 GMT)

How come Kedar Jhadav, the highest run scorer in the Ranji Trophy, doesn't get into the four-day squad?

Posted by HarrowXI on (June 11, 2014, 12:52 GMT)

I would select the same squad for Test and ODI. It shows more control from selectors who know exactly which eleven players are next in line for Indian International cricket.

1) Karun Nair 2) R Uthappa 3) Baba Abarjeet(all rounder) 4) Manan Vohra 5) Manoj Tiwari 6) U chand 7) Sanju Samson 8) Rishi Dhawan 9) Sandeep Sharma 10) Umesh Yadav 11) Parvez Rasool or any other Bowler.

This should be my eleven for both formats.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 11:29 GMT)

Its pathetic that Dinesk Karthik does not find a place. He should have been the captain.

Posted by vish57 on (June 11, 2014, 11:08 GMT)

Abhimanyu Mithun, who is the 2nd highest wicket taker in Ranji Trophy this season should have been picked. He had already toured Australia with the senior team and that experience would have helped

kedar jadhav should have got a chance in 4 day squad.good to see sanju in one day squad hope he get chances to prove his talent

Posted by baghels.a on (June 11, 2014, 9:40 GMT)

If you disregard selectorial quirks and rationale behind deeming certain players fit only for four day matches and some who are deemed as 50 over players then you will come to conclusion that nearly all players who did well in Ranji,Duleep Trophy and IPL are there in both the squads.Yes there are few glaring ommisions like Surya Kumar Yadav who had a decent Ranji trophy with Mumbai and terrific IPL with KKR despite batting at no.7.Ankit Bawne is another who had a brilliant Ranji Trophy with Maharashtra could have been named in 4 day squad. However i understand there is u-23 ACC emerging trophy in August and some might make that squad.

Posted by   on (June 11, 2014, 9:37 GMT)

Some reservations on otherwise what has been a good selection: 1. Why is CM Gautam not there in the 4 day team and on what basis Naman Ojha got selected? 2. What does the selectors think of Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar now? Have they lost faith in these swing bowlers who were the main bowlers in the tour to Eng ODIs 3 years back. Do they have any chance of comeback considering the WC is only a year away? 3. Why young talented spinners like Yuv Chahal, Karanveer Singh not tried in Australia when it is good place to play wrist spinners. 4. Why was Unmukt Chand selected and on what basis? 5. What did Jiwanjot do this season to merit a place in this team? 6. Why is Khadiwale not in the team for Austalia?

Posted by TNAmarkFromIndia on (June 11, 2014, 8:37 GMT)

Why is Kedar Jadhav in the one-day squad but not in the four-day squad? Do the selectors even know that he scored the most runs in the Ranji Trophy this season? Kedar Jadhav has a better first-class record than Ambati Rayudu, yet they've decided to pick Rayudu and not the man who scored 1,223 runs in the Ranji Trophy at a strike rate of nearly 80. How can you ignore a guy like that?
