Verma's all-round performance takes Assam to four-wicket victory
Amit Verma's all-round performance helped Assam overcome Jharkhand by four wickets at the Eden Gardens. Verma hit an unbeaten fifty to follow his 3 for 17 that had restricted Jharkhand to 133 for 9 in their 20 overs.
After they were put in, Jharkhand seemed in control at 59 for 1 as the Powerplay neared its end but Abu Nechim took two wickets in two overs and the score lurched to 73 for 4. Verma then accounted for the next four wickets - three with his legspin and one run-out.
Though the target was only 134, Assam were made to struggle. The fast bowling duo of Varun Aaron and Rahul Shukla took four wickets between them while Shahbaz Nadeem took 1 for 9 in his four overs. But Verma, having come in at No. 5, held firm, making an unbeaten 55 off 41 balls to seal victory with more than an over to spare.
Odisha's bowling strength came to the fore as they defended 131 for 6 for a 10-run win over Tripura. After being invited to bat, Odisha lost quick wickets to be reduced to 26 for 3, before the middle order made brief contributions. That, along with Deepak Behera's 24 off 15 balls, lifted Odisha to 131. Medium pacers Abhijit Sarkar and Sanjay Majumder were economical and took five wickets between them.
Tripura made a steady start to the chase and were 47 for 1 in the seventh over, but slid to 76 for 7. That they crossed 100 was courtesy Gurinder Singh, who top-scored with 28 unbeaten runs at No. 7. The Tripura wickets were shared between left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh, who took 3 for 18, and the new-ball bowlers Suryakant Pradhan and Behera, who took three wickets between them.
