Indian Premier League Auction 2011 January 8, 2011

Davy Jacobs eager to open with Tendulkar

19

Just over three-quarters of a million dollars wound up separating Warriors team-mates Johan Botha and Davy Jacobs after the first day of the 2011 IPL player auction. Botha was snapped up for the massive amount of US$950,000 by the Rajasthan Royals, while Jacobs was a bargain for the Mumbai Indians at $190,000.

The difference in money doesn't bother Jacobs at all. "My base price was $20, 000 so I took a massive leap. To be honest, I would have gone for free," he told ESPNCricinfo. Jacobs made a name for himself in the Champions League Twenty20 last year, where he scored 286 runs in six matches at an average of 47.66, and led the Warriors to the final. "I got the opportunity to play in the IPL because of my performance in the Champions League, I wouldn't have got anywhere without it."

Jacobs hoped his CLT20 performances would help him earn a national call up, but he has so far been ignored. Now, he thinks if he performs well in the IPL, it might earn him a chance to wear the green and gold. "I want to play for South Africa, but I know I couldn't have played better than I did in the CLT20. I am going to put the Warriors and the Mumbai Indians first and hope I can get there. There's no point planning it anymore."

As an opening batsman, there is the real possibility that Jacobs will get to partner Sachin Tendulkar. "I've had people tweeting me saying I may be opening the batting with Sachin Tendulkar. I've never met him but it will be awesome. The whole world looks at this guy. When I was a boy, he was playing Test cricket and he is still going." Jacobs did not keep in the CLT20 because Mark Boucher was in the side, but he is an able wicketkeeper and would do the job if called on.

"I'll bat anywhere or do anything. I just want to make the most of my chance."

He is known for his lively personality on the South African domestic circuit, and said he will try to bring some of that to Mumbai. "I just want to add what I can add. I will bring the same passion and desire that I have at the Warriors."

Botha received his news in a more measured fashion. He admitted to being surprised about his high price tag. "It's a massive surprise and these types of things are life-changing but with that comes responsibility." He has had a season in the IPL before, also at the Royals and he is pleased to be back at the same franchise. "I enjoyed my time with them before. I got along well with Warnie [Shane Warne] and the coaching staff. It's a nice to go back to a team where you were before."

The South African T20 captain is concentrating on the current one-day international series against India and the World Cup before turning his attention to the IPL. "There is a lot of cricket before IPL4. I'm sure once we get there we will give 100% for our teams."

Botha is a under rated player and RR saw the potential that few people see! Even SA do not see the full potential of the man! Excellent limited over bowler and good fielder. And dangerous with the bat at the end! Jacobs was great in the CL but since then did not do much in the first class league! Would like to see him in the green and gold someday!

Jacobs wont get a better platform to get into the SA squad than this

Being a Sachin and Mumbai Indian fan, am very pleased that Davy Jacobs was snapped up by MI. He is such an amazing talent that its a mystrey why he is yet to find a place in SA squad. He along with MI are going to rock and win the title

Davy Jacobs - I like this Guy.. He has his own attitude and love for the game. His statement of playing for free says it all. Davy Jacobs will a player to watch in IPL 4. His persona and lively attitude brings motivation in the camp and with guys like Harbhajan, Symmo and Jacobs all lively characters MI dressing room would never be short of boost. I put my money of MI. Sachin, Jacobs, Malinga, Rohit and Symmo all will click and put up a brilliant show.

Davy Jacobs is a fantastic Captain and what he did for the Warriors is brilliant, i too cannot understand why he has not made the SA t20 squad at least, he would make a explosive opener which we currently dont have and he would keep wicket which AB is reluctant to do...

@BalldiƱho II , you make a very good point there

  • on January 9, 2011, 8:54 GMT

So it seems that Davy Jacobs is one of the 10 best t20 wicket keeper batsmen in the world - goin on this auction. Yet he is not considered as being good enough to play for South Africa's national team. You tell me how that works???

Actually for an unknown player from sa, Jacobs is pretty well known. Best of luck Jacobs, with some luck you would definitely make it to SA limited overs squad.

I was hoping for this guy to get a good bid in ipl.. Before last champion league, no body has given a chance for warriors.. Warriors did not have the great winning habit in South African domestic.. It was lik kkr of South Africa.. But jacobs single handedly held the team together with lot of motivation and courage took his team to Champions league.. Well deserved... It'd be lot better if he plays his national team after IPL jus lik Shane watson and many others..

  • on January 9, 2011, 3:36 GMT

Hoping to see this guy do that jump shot over mid-wicket!!!

MI line up looks settled and a really strong one, take a look: Sachin(C) Jacobs(WK) Rayudu Rohit Sharma Symmo Pollard/Franklin (Pollard will not be available after couple of weeks) Bhajji Dhawal Kulkarni Malinga Ali Murtaza --> Need 1/2 Pacers for auction today my picks for MI: Munaf Patel or Ajit Agarkar,Charl Langeveldt.

@Balldinho, and how many IPL stars are currently in the Indian team?, if so called these TALENTS never get to shine, the thing about IPL is it consists of mediocre players with few international players, nothing more. Most of these domestic players wouldn't survive Steyn for one over in Tests.

  • tmartis on January 8, 2011, 23:58 GMT

I'm a Mumbai Indians fan and Jacobs at under $200,000 is a steal. The opening partnership with Sachin is sure to be dynamite. A step up from IPL 3 for sure.

  • on January 8, 2011, 21:11 GMT

This is why i LOVE the IPL, fans can say what they want about International Cricket... but some Good players NEVER get to make it because of the current Squad. The IPL gives these guys a chance not only to get a Big Pay-Day but also a chance to show off their skills to the World. Congrats to Jacobs I hope he leaves a big Mark this year
