Iqbal Abdulla, the Mumbai left-arm spinner, has signed a two-year deal with Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the fourth season of the IPL. Abdulla, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, was at Kolkata for the first three seasons, having been picked as their Under-19 draft in the first season, and now returns as an uncapped signing. "We needed a specialist Indian spinner to accompany Shakib [al Hasan] and Yusuf Pathan and we are happy to get Iqbal," a Kolkata spokesperson said.

Kolkata are talking to at least 10 or 12 uncapped players, some of whom played for the team in the first three editions of the IPL. Bengal allrounder Laxmi Shukla, Haryana wicketkeeper-batsman Manvinder Bisla and Delhi middle-order veteran Rajat Bhatia are some of the other names the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise is in talks with it.

Though Mumbai, the defending champions, were knocked out by Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals this year, Abdulla had a good season, ending as their top wicket-taker with 27 victims at an average of 22.11 in addition to notching up his maiden Ranji century, an unbeaten 150 against Saurashtra in their opening match. Abdulla averaged 47.75 with the bat in eight matches in the Ranji season. When Mumbai defended their crown in the 2009-10 season, Abdulla had a tally of 32 wickets.

Even though teams have until March 8 to sign uncapped players for the IPL, which starts on April 8, franchise owners and officials have shown desperation in the last few days to latch on to quality youngsters as soon as possible.

Kings XI Punjab have been lucky to get back three players who were part of their squad in the previous seasons: Punjab allrounder Love Ablish, Himachal Pradesh fast bowler Vikramjeet Malik and Uttar Pradesh left-arm quick Shalabh Srivastava have decided to stay with Punjab for the next two years. The franchise has also signed Sunny Singh and Nitin Saini, centurions for Haryana in the Ranji quarterfinals this year against Tamil Nadu, along with 23-year-old batsman Siddharth Chitnis, who made his first-class debut for Mumbai this year.

The BCCI has also made it clear that it is the players that have the final say on which team they wish to join. "Franchises have full rights to scout for players in their catchment area, but uncapped players have the right to negotiate," Niranjan Shah, BCCI vice-president, told IANS. "We are also keeping a close watch on any underhand dealings between the players and the franchises. All agreement will be tripartite, involving the board, the player and the franchise."

@ asraruwant: 5 pace bowlers + 2 part time spinners and in Indian soil? I am still laughing.

Posted by dhaval_cricfan on (January 14, 2011, 18:06 GMT)

MI signs Rayadu, T Suman and Satish....good choice....team looks good...

Posted by asraruwant on (January 14, 2011, 18:01 GMT)

My KKR XI in most of their matches will be 1) Jaques Kallis 2) Brad Haddin 3) Gautam Gambhir 4) Manoj Tiwary 5) Eoin Morgan 6) Yousuf Pathan 7)Laxmi Shukla 8) Brett Lee 9) Iqbal Abdullah 10) Laxmipathy Balaji 11) Jaidev Unadkat. The above team looks much much stronger than what KKR was fielding in their previous seasons. Good luck Shahrukh!

whoever kkr sign.HHHaaa...they will come at rocking bottom.

My mistake in my earlier post. Pathan will also be in Genuine Batsman category. So the list will be: Gambhir, Haddin, Kallis, Monoj, Morgan, Shakib and Pathan. Very very strong batting lineup indeed. backed by Shukla and Abdullah.

Posted by rajat-scinghania on (January 14, 2011, 6:58 GMT)

KKR should sign Rajat Bhatia. That would land them with a much needed good Indian all-rounder. KKR should consider this side -- 1. Gambhir 2. Bhatia 3. Kallis 4. Tiwary 5. Morgan 6. Pathan 7. Doeschate 8. Shakib 9. Abdullah 10. Balaji 11. Unadkat

So, Batsmen (8 in all) Openers: Gambhir - play his natural game with minimal risk, Bhatia - to be aggressive 3 & 4 Kallis (if Gambhir is out quick) , Tiwary (if Bhatia) 5,6,7 - - Morgan, Pathan, Doeschate -- best finishers of the game 8 - shakib - best suited for a few big hits Wicket keeper -- Eoin Morgan (yeah he can keep wickets as well) Bowlers (9 in all) Medium fast - Balaji, Unadkat, Kallis, Doeschate, Bhatia Spin -- Pathan, Abdullah, Shakib, Tiwary Only Abdullah, Balaji and Unadkat make to the playing 11 on basis of single skills. Bench: Haddin, Bisla, Goswami (wicketkeeper batsmen) Pattinson, Lee (bowlers) Shukla, (all-rounder). Indian Batsmen and bowlers required.

Posted by googletalk on (January 14, 2011, 4:01 GMT)

my KKR 11: 1. Gambhir 2. Haddin 3. Kallis 4. Morgan 5. Monoj 6. Shakib 7. Pathan 8. Shukla 9. Abdulla 10. Balaji 11. Unkadat. This will be a killer eleven. Pace bowlers: Kallis, Balaji, Unkadat, Shukla. Spinners: Shakib, Abdulla, Pathan. Genuine batsman: Gambhir, Haddin, Kallis, Morgan, Monoj, Shakib. Can bat: Abdulla, Shukla. Keeper: World class Haddin.

Stll can change: Shukla for a genuine indian batsman if requires.

KKR should recruit Goswami immediately. My choice best KKR team is 1. Gambhir 2. Kallis 3. Tiwary 4. Pathan 5. Morgan 6. Shakib 7. Goswami 8. Lee 9. Abdulla 10. Balaji 11. Unadkat

What is Deccan chargers team doing? Didn't spend much in Auction either. Now there is no news about them signing any good player in domestic circuit. All good players are being poached one by one. Again we would have the likes Mohnish Mishra, Anirudh singhs in our team. Seriously bad judgement. If the motive was to save money, why did the owners buy a team? There were so many other possible ventures for them.

It is difficult to understand the outpouring of support for Ganguly's inclusion in IPL4! Ganguly is almost 39 and his 3 year IPL contract would terminate when he is almost 42. 20-20 is high powered cricket where batsmen have to slog from ball 1; the bowlers have to bowl tightly to restrict batsmen and where fielders have sprint and dive desperately to save runs. Can Ganguly do this? No! He takes time to settle down, something KKR can ill afford! His running between wickets was never good even at the peak of his career. His fielding is ambivalent at best and his medium pace bowling cannot contain aggressive batting unless the ball is swinging around like a pendulum! He is a cricketer brought up in traditional style not for biff- bang cricket. Ganguly would make a great administrator in cricket both at State and National levels! Hope he gives up his ambition to play IPL and do something for good of cricket in India. He does not need the IPL money!

I feel KKR should sign Srivatsa Goswami....he is far better a batsman-keep than Bisla..And KKR should also look for players like Kamran Khan, Siddharth Trivedi, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Ganapati Vinnesh or even the new bowling sensation Sami Ahmed who represents Bengal in domestic circuit as a left arm pace bowler who has taken highest no of wickets in Vijay Hajare trophy for bengal..

My pick for KKR would be.. 1>Gambhir 2>Kallis 3>Manoj Tiwari 4>Yusuf Pathan 5>Sakib-Al-Hassan 6>Rajat Bhatia/Eoin Morgan 7>the wicket keeper.... 8>Iqbal Abdullah/ Laxmi Shukla 9>Brett Lee 10>Ryan ten Doeschate /James Pattinson/ Unadkar 11>Balaji

if Morgan playes then Unadkar plays ...otherwise KKR can use two foreign pacers

RCB's biggest loss is "Uttappa" & sure they will pay heavy price for this mistake. Uttappa is a match winner anytime & anywhere. Retain Pandey, G.Satish & Goutham into squad.

KKR should take Srivats goswami as soon as possible... I think he is the batsmen/wicket Keeper who can turn the game and also he can join gambhir in the opening spot.. Srivats goswami is a player like kohli, manish pandey, raydu, etc.. so, enroll him soon otherwise he will play against you... :)

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 12:51 GMT)

whats about ICL superstar Alok kapali? Hes in great form.IPL should take him

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 12:32 GMT)

I think KKR will probably get the combination right, though they will play Abdullah instead of Laxmi Ratan. If Haddin plays then Laxmi Sukhla might get chance to play in No.7 spot, other wise they will go for Bisla for wicket keeping job, because there is a certain place for Morgan in no. 5 position, because he is the best finisher in shorter format of game in World. Then team combination would be like that....... 1. Gambhir (C) 2. Kallis 3. Manoj Tiwary 4. Y.Pathan 5. Morgan 6. Sakib 7. Bisla (WK) 8. Breet Lee 9. Abdullah 10. Balaji 11. Udankat......... When Morgan will not be available then they will get Haddin in place of him, and Laxmi in place for Bisla..............

any idea about vigenesh - ICL superstar?

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 10:57 GMT)

i completely agree with shrini1963 DC had the largest amount left in their purse. Wake up!!

Posted by shrini1963 on (January 13, 2011, 9:53 GMT)

are the deccan chargers sleeping. wake up chargers ,there is still miles to go for you to get a good combination. you were short of good uncapped playersin previous editions and you are making the same mistake this time also.uncapped players are the back bone of any combination and there is no news of you people signing some good ones .what are you going to do with the money left in your purse? other franchices with lesser money are signing good players and you are waiting for what. andhra and hyderabad does not have good uncapped players. so come on this is a wake up call from a charger fan,

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 9:04 GMT)

i was very shocked whn kkr didn't bid for DADA. probably this is one of the most surprising moment of the ipl so far. but though it is a gr8 team. chennai, mumbai, kolkata -- the 3best from me. and the best xi for KKR is : 1) Gambhir (c) 2) Kallis 3)Morgan. 4) Y. Pathan 5)Shakib (VC) 6)Shukla 7) M.Tiwary 8) Malvinderr Bisla (wk) 9)B.Lee 10 ) Balaji 11) Udankat...

Posted by DaGunslinger on (January 13, 2011, 7:52 GMT)

KKR finally got a good combination. Just need to add some good local fast-medium bowlers, one quality local batsman and a good wicketkeeper batsman. If these players can gel together then i think they can be right on the top with Mumbai and Chennai....Pune looks to have done a good job though i must say Punjab and Rajasthan will suffer the most...

did bcci approve of mohammad irfan?

Posted by drkadir on (January 13, 2011, 6:47 GMT)

HI, I think KKR should be in Top 4 atleast. SEE my combination 1) Gaut.Gham. 2) J.Kallis 3) Morgan. 4) Yusuf Pathan 5)Manoj Tiwari 6)L.Shukla 7) Sakib ul Hasan 8) Wkt Malvinderr Bisla9)B.Lee 10 ) Balaji 11) Rajat Bhatia or Udkat. T20 is team of allrouders.............so that they can bat as deep as Number 8-9.

BATSMAN : 1)G.Gambhir.2),Morgan, 3) Manoj Tiwari. ALL ROUNDER : 1) J.kALLIS 2) Y.pathan 3) Sakib Hasan 4) L.Shukla. WKT : 1) Malvinder B bowlers : 1) B.Lee 2) Balaji 3) Udankat

If uncapped players had a choice as to which teams they wanted to join, why cant the big league players be given the same option rather than having to sell them like cattle?

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 5:29 GMT)

KKR should go ahead and enroll Srivats goswami - he is from our catchment area and can be the Keeper-Bat needed..

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 4:07 GMT)

No doubt that Kings XI Punjab will finish last in IPL! Except D Hussey not a single Match winner in the side! This game is meant for youngsters! I don't know how 40 yr old captain going to solve the problems. Same case with Rajasthan royals! both will fight for last place in the tournament!

Is chawla better than murali katik? Is Gilchrist better than C Gayle ? Is Nayar better than Bravo? I do think they can purchase good players in much lower rate. Kings XI going with lot of Australian favor but this will not be taste always. Very Poor selection!

Posted by Sriram_Krishnamurthy on (January 13, 2011, 3:58 GMT)

What is the whole idea of having a catchment area?? Iqbal Abdulla is a Mumbai spinner poached by KKR. Ajinkya Rahane is a Mumbai batsman poached by Rajasthan Royals. There are also talks of Ambati Rayudu (Baroda - Mumbai Catcment) being poached by RCB. Wonder if there are any domestic players left for Mumbai. It is time Robin Singh and Nita Ambani woke up and start signing some uncapped player - MI loyalist!!

Posted by   on (January 13, 2011, 3:42 GMT)

KKR had missed a trick in choosing their team. They will not get indian croud support for not hiring sourav.

Posted by perl57 on (January 13, 2011, 3:36 GMT)

The poacher Mallya and other owners are nipping youth in the bud by giving them less salaries. Manish Pandey being the case here. Thankfully BCCI is clearing it off its stances, albeit for the first time, that it is players' choice who they want to join. Pandey should have played in all those matches Ravindu Jadeja played. But now Jadeja gets 900k USD and Manish gets 1 million rs.

KKR can also chase for delhi's mithun minhas. He hav gud amnt of experience.

Posted by wiseshah on (January 13, 2011, 2:40 GMT)

kolkata needs some local player: some batsman and spinner or good pacer. They have very good international player, who can single handedly change the game by themselves. the desperately needs some local talent. may be hemang badani, or some wkt keeper like dinesh karthik. my line up will be: 1. gautam gambhir 2. jack kallis 3. eoin morgan 4. shakib al hasan 5. yousuf pathan 6.monoj tiwari 7.bret lee 8.balaji 9. iqbal abdullah 10. unkadat 11. one wkt keeper--so many allounder in the team, specially shakib and kallis can change the game single handedly and they will give them enough option to select more batsman or more bowlers

unless pak player come in to equation soon, the product cycle of IPL will decline further.

Posted by   on (January 12, 2011, 19:16 GMT)

a single player is not responsible for the poor show of a team... rajat bhatia shud be signed by delhi again as he needs 2 prove a point..

Posted by   on (January 12, 2011, 17:02 GMT)

I wish Kolkata sign Rajat Bhatia ... He is responsible for delhi poor show last year
