Rajasthan Royals have signed New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram as a replacement for the injured Paul Collingwood. Oram has been signed for $250,000, which is what the franchise paid for Collingwood in the player auction in January. IPL rules preclude teams from signing replacement players at a higher value than the player they are replacing.

Oram had an excellent World Cup with the ball, taking 12 wickets at an average of 18.41. His standout performance came in New Zealand's upset victory over South Africa in the quarter-finals. In that game, he took 4 for 39 and pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Jacques Kallis to earn the Man-of-the-Match award.

"He [Oram] fits in that kind of slot like Collingwood, a middle-order batsman who bowls," a franchise official told ESPNcricinfo. "And he really hits the ball hard. Also his recent performance in the World Cup was fantastic, especially in the quarter-finals against South Africa. It is not the main reason [we picked him], but it helps to have a player in form."

A few days ago Oram told One News that he was looking forward to a stint in the IPL, though he refused to divulge the name of the franchise he was negotiating with at the time. "I'm only a replacement for an injured guy, which is ironic, but I'm going to look forward to going over there and playing well, and who knows, maybe pick up a gig for next year and my career might just keep going on and on."

Collingwood is set to undergo surgery for a damaged cartilage in his right knee next week, and will not recover in time to participate in the tournament that begins on April 8.

I cant watch the IPL in New Zealand, therefor I dont care who gets traded or plays where, I will wait for the next regular 2011/12 season for NZ.. Good Luck Jacob!

Crazy its not on in NZ, to greedy IPL? Fine thousands will watch online for free and you won't get a penny. The great thing about the internet is now the viewers have the power and broadcasters can't hold us to ransom anymore.

RR still can win ipl 4 as ipl1.its better we dont make mistake again n again.big money on botha, which hav no place.its ridiculous n lose of RR money,he gets chance only when warne get injury.

the time has come for warne to step down frm captain n focus on coaching n giv rr a way to buy new big player.warne can stil assist rr frm coaching.

another was retaintion of warne not of yusuf pathan. strong contander for captain of rr,watson, future captain N newly appointed vice- captain of aus.

if pathan was there in rr,then it WOULD hav been great.he is big player.

rr hav no option to choose 1 frm warne n botha.thats blunder i hav to say that player like warne n botha shouldnt be part of rr frm next yr.

RR drop warne to coaching N buy ponting, who can be buy at low cost right now,can be handy with bat like sachin.

appoint new captain.Go RR Go.

The right move by RR and the man is ideally suited for the format as well... go royals we're right on!!!

So many New Zealand players in the IPL this year, YET WE DON'T GET TO SEE IT! I don't know why there is no coverage of it here this year. All I can say is it is stupid. It would be shown around 10pm-5am NZ time, which I'm pretty sure there are no other sports which would be shown between those times except for golf. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY WE DO NOT GET COVERAGE. Thanks.

This is an excellant trade off by the Royals. Oram is a dangerous batsman and a very effective bowler. Dhum Dhadaka!

this is a great trade up for the royals

@dinster77 "umesh yadav is much harder to come by than a jacob oram" I completely agree with you. but I scratch my head with both hands and try to find some logic of not picking Sourav Ganguly by any team. If you see most of 10 team, there are hardly many good indian players. Really cant understand the reason. Is it a cricketing reason or purely political?

If punjab can sign Ryan Maclaren after auction, Chennai can sign Tim Southee then why Sourav Ganguly is not allowed to be bought by Kochi?

I think BCCI should atleast show some respect to their former player (Great Player)...

we cant watch the IPL here in NZ, bcci too greedy

Royals are not even contenders. Before the tournament starts we can already rule out Royals (not necessarily their fault considering they had limited money), Delhi (Went to the auction with no plan whatsoever and came back with Warner, 2 million dollar Irfan Pathan, Morne Morkel, Colin Ingram, a bunch of Indian pacers who are not in the world cup squad but could potentially be, and VanderMerwe is the only real spinner, not much of a supporting cast for Sehwag), and perhaps pune (only because of injuries). Anyway as for the royals they will have issues. Warne is battle worn and doesnt have much juice left. Tait is very inconsistent. The indian boys have talent but not like the indians on Chennai, Mumbai, or RCB. Botha is good but there is no reason to play him if you already have Warne. For royals to win Watson and taylor must both average a minimum of 40

I'm a huge fan of Oram, but I think RR are a bit confused. Oram is no longer "a middle-order batsman who bowls". Five years ago he was, but now he's definitely a bowler who bowler who bats, maybe playing as the #9 batsman. You'd play him expecting 3-4 good overs and maybe hit a few boundries in the season.

@tones765 Ure right on about Jadeja yadav and Chawla but Pathan and Uthappa are 2 of the biggest ipl stars and are much better than the players u have mentioned with the exception of Chris Gayle

Good replacement. Collie has been terrible of late, and every T20 side needs a tonker down the order.

good buy from royals. jacob has got a lot to offer as a player on and off the field. he is a well respected member of the black caps and will also be well respected for rr.

Posted by tones765 on (April 6, 2011, 23:24 GMT)

@dinster77 Completely agree with the point that only 4 foreigners can play, and indian bowlers go for a higher value cuz of the shortfall of quality bowlers and cuz 10 teams require them, nevertheless if there was propper planning, it wasnt required to spend that much say on umesh or whoever. For me, he is equivalent to anyother ranji player, and no team would ever pay that much for a ranji bowler! Just cuz he was part of the team that toured sa, he went for that much! That in my opinion is ridiculous, teams could have strategised on watche other bowlers and that are at the ranji level and got them much cheaper..! The way the money is dealt with in the ipl is tragic to say the least. I do feel, it can be improved and could be more efficient.

Very good move by RR. Oram has a lot of skills but under performs, hope he will do something with RR. GO KIWIS, GO BLACK CAPS.

Posted by dinster77 on (April 6, 2011, 19:54 GMT)

@tones765

Jadeja's 900k vs Oram's 250 k is not really an apples to apples comparison. The biggest factor that people overlook is the number of foreign players that can play in a game. Just on a pure economical basis a umesh yadav is much harder to come by than a jacob oram. So u pay more for umesh..

so two kiwis in royals team, good buy

Posted by Rajeev129 on (April 6, 2011, 17:37 GMT)

Good buy from Royals. Watson, Taylor, Oram, Warne, Botha - Really not bad at all.

Best way for Royals to be competitive in this tourney will depend on Shane Warne. My suggestion is that he should concentrate on coaching job instead playing.

Posted by tones765 on (April 6, 2011, 17:17 GMT)

A very good buy, this. Not sure, why he wasnt picked up by any of the franchisees during the auction. Being a CSK fan, i would love to have him in my team, the utility player who can be an asset to any team.

Its woeful that majority of the teams have missed out on signing some wonderful players with the likes of tamim iqbal, robin petersen, imran tahir, ray price, johnathan trott, upul taranga, andy russell, kemar roach, chris gayle, brendan taylor and tim southee..and the likes..! ( well southee has now been roped by CSK)

But overall, a very poor analysis on team compositions when teams pay 900,000 for jadeja and chawla and umesh yadav..(no offence to them, but its ridiculous) and paying above 2 million to the pathans/uthappas(just idiocracy) I would have come up with a utility team with a budget of 4.5 million. No kidding!

Anyways, i believe the two strongest teams are the ones that did well last year...chennai and mumbai however, bangalore and pune looks strong too!
