Big picture

Delhi Daredevils need some inspiration to lift themselves from the bottom of the table. They've even changed the nature of the insipid Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, transforming it from a low-and-slow surface to one with lots of live grass. The move brought them what could have been a morale-boosting win over Kings XI Punjab. The grass was, however, surprisingly trimmed for their next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, a move that did not impress Virender Sehwag. The Delhi top order did not enjoy the surface, Bangalore's did, and the visitors managed to scrape through in a tight chase. Delhi play three more games at the Kotla this season, and might as well make the most of home advantage by giving their captain the kind of wicket that he wants.

After a five-day break, Kolkata Knight Riders return to the hit-and-travel IPL action for the first of five games in ten days. They couldn't chase a modest total and couldn't defend a substantial score in their previous two matches at home. In their defence, they ran in to Chris Gayle and had nowhere to hide. A game against struggling Delhi could not have come at a better time. Kolkata's powerful batting line-up should enjoy the bouncier Kotla track much more than the one at Eden Gardens. Delhi have the better pace attack though, and Kolkata would be wary after what Ishant Sharma did to Kochi Tuskers Kerala on another helpful surface in Kochi.

Form guide (most recent first)

Delhi: LWLWL (last in points table)
Kolkata: LLWWW (fifth in points table)

Team talk

Kolkata could make some changes given the pacy nature of the Delhi track. Brett Lee should walk in after being left out in place of Brad Haddin against Bangalore. Whether Kolkata go in with two left-arm spinners, Shakib Al Hasan and Iqbal Abdulla, would be interesting to see. They also have overseas options in Ryan ten Doeschate and Australian fast bowler James Pattinson.

Delhi rotated their fast bowlers in the previous two games on the revitalised Kotla track. Ajit Agarkar and Varun Aaron made way for Umesh Yadav and Ashok Dinda against Bangalore. What combination will they play tomorrow?

In the spotlight

Morne Morkel enjoyed the pace and bounce of the Kotla pitch, and it was he who brought Delhi back against Bangalore with two wickets in three balls. Even in the high-scoring match against Punjab, he had the best economy-rate on either side. He hasn't received enough support, and will again have to carry the attack tomorrow if Delhi are to start some sort of revival.

Gautam Gambhir, with more IPL runs than Sehwag, was not retained by Delhi, and became the most expensive purchase at the January auction, bought for a record $2.4 million by Kolkata. He was the first player on sale, and the bidding for him was so fierce that there were about 35-40 bids and counter-bids among the franchises. Delhi, however, did not bid even once. The snub will be somewhere on Gambhir's mind when he leads Kolkata out tomorrow at his home ground, and he would want to show Delhi what they missed.

Prime numbers

  • Venugopal Rao has scored 190 runs in this IPL, the most for Delhi after David Warner
  • Delhi had the most ducks in an IPL innings, five, until Kochi got six against Deccan Chargers

The chatter

"They cut a lot of grass, which we didn't want, but we have to carry on with whatever wicket we get."
Virender Sehwag on the Kotla wicket

"I believe it is unfair to single out Rajat because I don't think he has got decent enough opportunities where he could have made a difference. He is as valuable a player as others."
Kolkata coach Dav Whatmore backs his allrounder Rajat Bhatia to come good.

selection of DD is absurd... they can't dare to put their expensive players out ...that is why pathan and yadav has been playing almost all the matches with no performance. Yadav over Aaron is inexplicable

Posted by Kumar_cricket on (April 28, 2011, 13:54 GMT)

Delhi needs either Sehwag or Warner to playtill; the end ,atleast till 15 overs to put a big score.

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 13:42 GMT)

it will be Veeru V/s Gambhir & Pathan vs Patha :)

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 13:24 GMT)

Am DD fan.. I think its going to be real easy game for KKR.. unless warner and viru starts a good strt for DD... because DD couldnt do much with bowling.. pathan needs some inspiration.. he is in under pressure.. i find its unfair.. noone told DD owners to pay him tat much money..

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 13:20 GMT)

would love to see sehwag fire but for a losing cause :D

@shaman: how about balaji keeping wickets for KKR?

Posted by mahonescofield on (April 28, 2011, 13:15 GMT)

c'mmon some faith in agarkar....he's had jst one opportunity...surely he deserves more...

Posted by Prats6 on (April 28, 2011, 12:49 GMT)

Vru's captaincy has been hopeless, one one day he says Varun Aaron is a good bowler and then drops him to play Umesh Yadav and Dinda? That was ridiculous. He is not sure what to do when he wins the toss. On the other hand KKR have their own problem with the Delhi coaching staff wanting to play Delhi players. How in hell does Bhatia get a game?

i think kkr win today not surpised todays hero kallis, after mumbai best batting line in my dairy

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 11:38 GMT)

I m going with DD . if warner & sahwag kiliked in batting they are scored more than 200. over 200 scored very difficult to chasing . If KKR play first than be out under 150 & also done be a hi class bowling performens.

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 11:38 GMT)

DD are top heavy.....they dont have a lower middle order batsman who can come in n play a cameo......i dont c delhi winning this one unless sehwag plays a blinder.....kkr are a very good outfit this season....i think lee will replace morgan n this match...and maybe bhatia will be replaced but thats not sure....for sure its 80-20 to kkr

After having one of the best team combinations for the first three ipl's it is a shame to see such mediocre selection of players and if that was not enough the coach has repeatedly used the same bunch of australian players without giving a chance to young Indian or quality SA players...what a shame !!!!!!! Greg Shepard should have been the one to be auctioned and not the players....with these kind of people i am sure that GMR sports will be bankrupt very soon

@ The Shaman of Sexy, i agree with your Dehli Daredevils team, its about time Colin Ingram got a chance too

Delhi will win. Sehwag!!!

Posted by srivatsacertain on (April 28, 2011, 11:03 GMT)

Well well if Sehwag unleashes himself, then no team can survive him...! Hoping for a Sehwag blitzkrieg tonight! Surrender to Virender!!

Posted by SachinRao on (April 28, 2011, 11:00 GMT)

Delhi is making a bluder upon blunder..They need to draft Andrew and make some impact. If Sehwag and Warner dont fire, they are dead.

Posted by harshvardhansingh on (April 28, 2011, 10:54 GMT)

Delhi has shown some spirit in last two matches..wining by KXIP and giving a good fight to its a tough contest..KKR has also lost two matches..and if opening pair of DD clicks then there will be no respite for KKR bowlers..i think that DD will win this tight contest..and morkel once again play a lead role..DD shd include a spinner V.yadav or R. pawar..or andrew macdonald..and drop dinda and u.yadav..and play v.aaron..and DD will win for sure..

Delhi just win it.. My team : Warner - Sehwag - Pathan - Hopes - McDonald - Ojha - Venugopal - Nagar - Morkel - Dinda - Varun Aaron

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 9:55 GMT)

It doesnt mean that Pathan should be picked of all the matches because he is paid... Only if he sits out hr understands the value of being in...

Posted by LALITHKURUWITA on (April 28, 2011, 9:51 GMT)

This will be the most boring match.

Posted by tanmaycool94 on (April 28, 2011, 9:39 GMT)

its going to be a kkr win all the way.i wont be surprised if more than 200 runs are scored by kkr.and dont forget kkr has gambhir, rajat bhatia, ladda, saghwan who have already played for delhi and to back it up u have d likes ofyusuf pathan, kallis, morgan, lee, haddin, balaji.i dont even see delhi coming close to kkr.GO KKR THRASH DELHI.

Posted by ganeshsank on (April 28, 2011, 9:06 GMT)

wat happens to spin bowlers in DD, they didnt purchase or nt using in match......i need special man in spin like murali, baji, randiv, shakiful, oja, mishra, vettori ,warne!!!!

Posted by ganeshsank on (April 28, 2011, 9:00 GMT)

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

delhi shud play Andrew Mcdonald, Van der Merwe as foreign players and, shud leave Pathan,Agarkar, both are pure waste... Umesh yadav,Varun aron shud play instead...

Posted by Ash.P on (April 28, 2011, 7:10 GMT)

DD have to induct the young ad exuberant Unmukt in their team as a surprise package. He has a history of hitting the leather a long way out of the stadium. Don't go by his age or "inexperience". Veeru, are you listening?

Delhi Daredevils NEED TO DROP PATHAN who can neither take wickets nor bowl economically and cannot (consistently) score runs too (If he scores 20 odd runs, then he gives away 40 while bowling).

Posted by   on (April 28, 2011, 5:46 GMT)

KKR will win..Yusuf will score a ton

Posted by coolio78 on (April 28, 2011, 5:39 GMT)

If Delhi win this match, I will shave my head off. There is no way Delhi can beat KKR with a team like this. Only 2 batsmen (Sehwag and Warner) and 1 good fast bowler (Morkel) cannot win many matches. KKR have Gambhi, Kallis, Haddin, Morgan, Y Pathan, Tiwary, Lee, Balaji, etc, and good spinners, I don't think Delhi stand a chance...!

Posted by Beerboy on (April 28, 2011, 5:10 GMT)

For me Dehli have never had the right team selection once.. i look at the side and dont see any fight.. i can clearly see its a squad divided and the aussie coach is def liking his aussies!! why hasnt Ingram played?? this boy was Sa's pro20 player of the year last year- give him a run!! wade is crap and finch out of form.. i would also bat pathan higher up- he gotta come right sooner or later

Posted by narvan on (April 28, 2011, 5:07 GMT)

DD should get their team combination right.bring ajit & varun in place of umesh & dinda.they all give many runs but ajit & varun also takes 2-3 wickets each.I hope DD should win but KKR LOOKS MUCH BETTER & BALANCE SIDE.

If Kolkata looses this match the tournament would be all the more interesting. With 4 points in hand, Delhi would be very determined to score big. If Kolkata looses today then you will have KKR, DD, DC, and Kochi stranded at 6 points each, each playing 7 games. KX1 would also be on 6 point but they only played 5 games.
