Ganguly joins Pune Warriors

ESPNcricinfo staff
507

Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, has been signed by Pune Warriors as a replacement for Ashish Nehra, who was ruled out for the remainder of the 2011 season with a finger injury. Ganguly's contract is for a period of one year and is an IPL lifeline to the batsman after he went unsold at the player auction in January, where his base price was $400,000.

Ganguly will be vice-captain to Yuvraj Singh and is likely to join the Pune squad ahead of their match against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium on May 4.

"We were waiting for Ashish Nehra's fitness report and ultimately the report came yesterday," Abhijit Sarkar, Pune's team director, told PTI. "I was already in talks with Ganguly and we decided that the amount of experience that Sourav has in cricket will no doubt help the team. So we finalised Ganguly last night.

"He is playing in IPL not for money but to prove a point. Our team think-tank felt that Sourav Ganguly is the best possible option available so we went for him. He has been a fighter and a master of comebacks. We are very much confident that he will prove his worth."

Ganguly played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the first three seasons of the IPL and led the team in two of them, while Brendon McCullum was captain for the other. Kolkata fared poorly in those years and are the only franchise not to make the semi-finals. Kolkata did not bid for Ganguly in January despite his name coming up for sale twice, as they revamped their squad entirely, and the batsman later refused a mentoring role with the franchise.

Pune Warriors are bottom of the ten-team league at present, having lost six consecutive matches after winning their first two. Ganguly has an average IPL record - 1031 runs at an average of 28 and strike-rate of 110 - and could strengthen an under-performing and short batting order.

Wish ganguli all the best. he is one of the fab 5, n shudnt fade away with a whimper. he has left his best days behind, and his test record as captain and also batsman, had dropped in later stages. hope he has kept himself fit n regains his gift of timing. But i really dont know what he has to prove... that he can still play 3 yrs of t20?

I will definitely watch some games now as Sourav is on board. A legend who has been wronged all his playing life, first by the BCCI and then by SRK. Yuvraj, Dhoni, Sehwag, Irfan pathan and Harbhajan would not have been what they are today, had it not been for him. He supported them when they were down and out. Yuvraj still remembers those times and does not forget to thank Sourav for what he did for him, but I am not sure about the others. Keep going Sourav. You have proven youself thousands of times. There is nothing more to prove. In my opinion your contribution to indian cricket is far more than that of Sachin. it is one thing to score runs and another to instill confidence in a team that just was too meek and was in habit of surrendering from a position of strength. We always had batsmen who could score tons of runs, but never a leader to use his players so judiciously on top of being a great batsman himself. Dhoni is reaping the fruits of your hard work.

expecting Sourav Ganguly to make a difference to the floundering campaign of Pune Warriors is asking for too much. but if Ganguly is successful in instilling confidence in the Yuvraj Singh-led side, they would be a difficult team to handle.

SC Ganguly, the name vibrants everyone not only loves cricket, but the country too. The name because of whom the Team India, now is there on top in world cricket. The name has always been proven himself, within the nation and amongst the selectors also. Sourav more than is a justification of loyality, agression, struggle, passion and the moral of come back. There is only word for him -- GREATEST. Greater like all huge names we find in the history, Ashoka -The Great, Akbar-The Great, Alexander-The Great.......AND Now,,,,,,Sourav - The Great Cricket Soldier, admirer of everyone..........

This just in: To compensate Kolkata for the WC2011 England India game that was moved to Bangalore, the May 19 clash between Pune Warriors and KKR has been switched by BCCI from the D.Y. Patil Stadium to the Eden Gardens. A board spokesman explained that this will be KKR's first ever away match at home.

  • on May 4, 2011, 7:36 GMT

Dada must be in IPL but trust me he can't be a super star in this IPL...And Dada can't do much for SPW...And we can't blame SRK...He is the owner of KKR and KKR struggled heavily in first 3 seasons...So he released every player of his team...We saw Punjab doing that...DD released Gambhir...RCB released Dravid and fortunately they all were sold in the auction...So I think we can't blame SRK or the KKR staff...they did what they should do,rebuilding KKR with new faces...Hope Pune will qualify for the knockouts but I think Yuvi,Dada and the crew can't do much in this season..But we can't hate a cricket legend as a real cricket lover...love to see atleast some good shots from the Prince of Kolkata..

  • Santhakumar.A on May 4, 2011, 7:24 GMT

the one of the reason y kkr is doing great this season is bcoz of no ganguly.sub continent players dont know wen to make way for the new players and retire respectfully instead the greed makes them suffer humiliation just like ganguly.pune is already in a mess and now they made even bigger mistake.someone like guptill wud have been a better option for them.i hope saurav plays today's match and face mallinga.then only we wil know how potent he is

Sourav! Sourav!! Sourav once again!!! It is immaterial how he plays, he is known for his fierce competitiveness, steely character and 'never to die' attitude. He is the mentor for the new generation of cricketers who are taking the Team India to new heights. The passion for the game to the 'aam-admi' will be boosted by this surprise inclusion by Pune. He loves to take the bull by the horn, we will love to see him in the field. The class is always there. Will the final part of the novel unfold some pleasant surprises? Best of Luck to the great hero.

  • cricfanraj on May 4, 2011, 6:03 GMT

I love Sourav but this is a bad decision. I'm not sure why he is so keen on returning to IPL when he is not playing any format of cricket . There is nothing that gets added to his achivements if he performs better. There is nothing that he lose if he fails . At this juncture I doubt if he can enjoy his stay at IPL.His fitness will be a big question. Any way All the best and welcome back . I wish you do well in this IPL. As far as KKR is concerned KKR fans might miss dada but their team is doing excellent so there should not be many complaints.

Cricketing brain?Where were you at time of auction? Abhijit Sarkar said Ganguly best cricketing brain in the country. What a joke ? He even does not deserve a place in T20 team. Somnath Da and others supports this and Mukharjee and Bose Roy etc writes this in Times. Supported by lots of Bengali in various field Reported on All Bengal NDTV and taken by Bengali owner Roy Basically an all Bengal affair I will scratch yours and you scratch mine type. No wander many Bengali started to loggin and praising Dada some even taking fake south of western Indian names as id's Example where Ravi is not spelled as Rabi.

    Ganguly IPL 2010 against teams

many runs scored at low strike rate spoiled team's chances.

See against better bowing attack low strike rate

Deccan Chargers, Ganguly 0 in 3 balls win Royal Challengers 23 in 22 balls 104.54 win Chennai Super Kings 11 in 20 balls 55.00 loss Delhi Daredevils 56 in 46 balls 121.73 win Royal Challengers 33 in 32 balls 103.12 loss Chennai Super Kings 10 in 12 balls 83.33 loss Delhi Daredevils 5 in 10 balls 50.00 loss Mumbai Indians 31 in 34 balls 91.17 loss

See against weaker bowing attack slightly better strike rate

Kings XI Punjab 50 in 40 balls 125.00 win Deccan Chargers 88 in 54 balls 162.96 win Kings XI Punjab 36 in 31 balls 116.12 loss Rajasthan Royals win 75 in 50 balls 150.00 win Rajasthan Royals 33 in 29 balls 113.79 loss Mumbai Indians 42 in 36 balls 116.66 win

Weaker bowling attack also means one great bowler but other bowlers weak so likely hood of playing one or Two great bowlers from side is less.. BTW ... No team in world reserves

  • Masud_BITK on May 4, 2011, 4:05 GMT

Shourav is a fighter and he did always great whenever he came back. Since every eyes will be on him, it is really hard for him to perform. If he can, he will be great twice. My bless on Dada. I think he should take Bangladesh coaching role rather than proving him again in IPL. I shall support Pune as well...because of Shourav...KKR is the second..Mumbar is the 3rd for 10dulkar.

  • on May 3, 2011, 22:40 GMT

I think the people who blame Ganguly should look at the domestic players KKR had in those seasons like Laxmi Sukla etc. In addition their foreign players did not do much most of them are one match guy and scores nothing for the season. Therefore, it is totally unfair to him. Unless u just dont like him like like some of the selectors. Some of them are so stupid to comment of his performance while their own batting average is in twenties or thirties !! Good luck Sourav. I know u have tough job on hand but u did it time and time again. That why u r the best !

  • landl47 on May 3, 2011, 22:23 GMT

  • daalien on May 3, 2011, 22:07 GMT

Cool, they replaced one player who cannot bat, bowl or field with another one. A like-for-like, very rare. Does the BCCI run the Pune team?

Dada haters will shout endlessly even if ganguly scores runs and does well coz they are born like that....im sure pune's position will improve drastically now...if not semis mayb 5th or 6th and mind u if dada had a good team in the last 3 seasons for kkr im sure it would have reached semis coz it was only he who performed...others completely failed, with no good indian players for support.....with pune dada has yuvi, uthappa etc for support....im sure this combination will gel well

  • on May 3, 2011, 18:47 GMT

Good to see Dada back, however hope he can contribute to Pune, as he was useless for KKR, and KKR had done a great job putting dada in backstage. love KKR

  • SACHINTHEBOND on May 3, 2011, 18:41 GMT

ganguly joining pune clearly shows he is not loyal to bengal n greedy about money...if he fails, he would be making a mockery of himself...bad choice dada!!

Royal Bengal Tiger!!! Ganugly is more like Royal Pussy Cat. Sure, take him PUNE. Anyway Pune has to win all games to make it to semis/playoff. So this is more like charity for Ganugly. I guess he didn't learn, when NO-ONE picked him.

  • on May 3, 2011, 18:06 GMT

Good Luck Dada! Not much can be done though at this stage.

  • Unmesh_cric on May 3, 2011, 15:53 GMT

It's amazing..some people really like Ganguly and some absolutely hate him...nothing in-between. I don't remember any recent news on cricinfo which has received so many comments from the readers. I am one of the Ganguly fans..go Ganguly!! No doubt IPL will be much more interesting now..irrespective of whether he performs or not.

  • Elan.S on May 3, 2011, 15:50 GMT

If we look at this situation with more cricketing terms then the move really makes sense to me. The biggest problem of Pune has been the loss of too many wickets at the beginning of their innings and that forces guys like Utappa and Yuvi to play the holding innings, which is not ideal.

If Ganguly can able to play 25-30 ball innings even at a run-a-ball will make a lot of difference and will give the license for the stroke makers to pick it up from there.

I guess its a good move and really hope that this will pay off. We can't ask any better than a revival of the bottom placed team towards the end of the league. This will surely make the tournament more interesting.

  • Jeevss on May 3, 2011, 15:48 GMT

    Heyyyy.. Now i love Pune...

  • b.l.u.e1 on May 3, 2011, 15:42 GMT

Bows to such ppl for dere poor crikt history knowledge. or may b they weren't watchin crikt during Ganguly-Wright era, the true renaissance of Team India. ppl love to find flaw in ganguly's skil, but i promise u, DaDa wil make u eat ur words.

DaDa, u r d people's Champion.. Go, nd silence ur critics..

  • Buddhapriyan on May 3, 2011, 15:38 GMT

oh..Wov......dada is back....we can see dada`s sixes again also Pune will come out from the bottom of point table

  • 19-10-1988 on May 3, 2011, 15:32 GMT

U see Dada will be only hard to play against short bitch balls. So Malinga cannot be done good against him with his yorkers and slow balls

  • 19-10-1988 on May 3, 2011, 15:31 GMT

Dada will easily face the Malinga and make him as joker. that is the power of Dada.

  • on May 3, 2011, 15:25 GMT

Dada is back and thats gonna make things interesting. He may not set the world ablaze, but he will definitely make a difference in the stuttering fortunes of pune warriors. One thing is for sure he wont be a drag like Dravid. That old man is really struggling.

  • on May 3, 2011, 15:24 GMT

dada coming 2 make IPL more intresting not by playing but by making controversies................. dats 4 sure

  • Satya_GAME on May 3, 2011, 14:53 GMT

Guys. I'm a die hard fan of Sachin and Ganguli. (They are the 2 top in the list at-least). I have seen sachin playing superbly throughout the innings. Last year Ganguli finished 4th out of 7matches while Raina finished 3rd after 9matches(In total scores). So, I hope for some fireworks from him this year also.

The maestro duo Sachin and Sourav will be face to face. I just can imagine the thrill. May sourav came as Gayle has come for Bangalore.

  • Tarani on May 3, 2011, 14:53 GMT

  • shyamrock on May 3, 2011, 14:18 GMT

Nice move by Pune. With the current form, there are very slim chances for pune to make it to the top of the list. So it doesn't hurt including Saurav in the team (especially knowing what he can deliver in the come backs).Pune has enough talent to make it to the top yet what they are lacking here is a guidence from an experienced player - which I'm very much sure saurav can provide - this takes the pressure of Yuvi and helps him contribute a bit more for the team... but agian if this dosen't work there is nothing lose.

  • KTiwari on May 3, 2011, 14:16 GMT

Great to see DADA back. Pune Warrior, now you will have significant increase in fan base and also lot of best wishes. Ganguly can certainly guide Yuvraj for better decisions on the field. Yuvraj did make some crucial mistakes.

  • IndianNeo on May 3, 2011, 13:33 GMT

at what rate is ganuly here to make pune fail

  • gandhala on May 3, 2011, 13:29 GMT

well come back saurav.dont expect too much from dada . May be a 40 ball innings of 35-50 runs should be enough, with the likes of ryder, robin, yuvi playing around him.rather if dada thinks to take on the bowling it might back fire on him.If its MI vs PW in which sourav plays first.I wont be surprised if sachin opens the bowling with a left arm spinner to saurav.

  • BiruKnight11 on May 3, 2011, 13:26 GMT

  • MENDIS_Forever on May 3, 2011, 12:57 GMT

Very good move by the PUNE WARRIORS. it's a late decision..

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:57 GMT

Is Ganguly out of his mind? No one would do that after getting ridiculed like that in the auction. He should probably stick to commentary and take up some advisory role. He's ended his career on a high.

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:57 GMT

    dada dada dada....................

  • AusieBangaleeShameem on May 3, 2011, 12:54 GMT

So I've finally got a team to support in IPL 4. Thanks Pune! You've definitely made a good move at the end.

Master of come-back is back in action! WOW! Can't believe!! So happy I'm!!!

From all remaining Pune Matches I'll be DEFINITELY watching my most favourite DADA playing IPL. Wish you all the best Dada with the remaining Pune matches. (BTW I'm not a KKR fan any more -- BUT was a die-hard KKR in last three IPL seasons.)

  • kj2000 on May 3, 2011, 12:54 GMT

Dada always knew he would make a comeback that is why he didn't take up any role in the IPL....He is definitely going to play against the Mumbai Indians tomorrow opening the innings and he is going to form a great partnership with Yuvi

  • sarga2006 on May 3, 2011, 12:52 GMT

I don't think DADA can make any difference to the Pune team. They were entirely dependent on Yavi , Robbie, Ryder and Pandey. Pandey has flopped so far and Uthappa has not been able to make a big score. So their batting scores are only from Jesse and Yuvi. Even if Ganguly comes he will surely fail with a lot of pressure. They are wasting talents like Ferguson by giving waste oppurtunity to McCullum and Paine. I hope they include Ferguson in the matches to come.

  • Notredam on May 3, 2011, 12:51 GMT

Pune are already donw in the table...Now they will be out..completely out..

  • KilleRB0Y on May 3, 2011, 12:51 GMT

Oh YEAH!!!! Finally the PRINCE of kolkata is bak to rock.. but tis time no for kkr tough.. Cant wait for pune vs kkr...

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:44 GMT

The irony of ironies is that Dada, the person who groomed Yuvraj Singh will now be playing under him!! I dnt think this is very wise decision by the Pune owners. With all due regards to Dada(I personally respect and appreciate his leadership skills and batting prowess), I believe that he should have moved on with the commentary career. I dont think he is fit as a T20 player! I still find him an ideal for the test spot though! And I am a die hard KKR fan and will always be..Go KKR go!!

  • Mirza_mz on May 3, 2011, 12:44 GMT

I think Nehra and Injury are inseparable. Got only knows what could have been his frequency of injuries if he were just a little better fielder. Or... may be he gets injured because he don't know how to field and gets injured in the process. Anyway, Pune Warriors... May God Save You...!!

  • Bobby614 on May 3, 2011, 12:42 GMT

DADA is back.. he is destiney's child.. entire IPL fraternity ruled him out..but he makes a comeback here.. am loving it... I too didnt watch any IPL4 match till now.. will start watching Pune's mathces from now on.. i dont think DADA has anything to lose, so he can play his natural game and will not be under any pressure.. but this is like a slap on SRK's face.. both Gayle n Ganguly were snubbed by SRK and both of them now figure in the opposition teams..

  • Mangaloregr8 on May 3, 2011, 12:38 GMT

If this is true, it's a great news for Sourav Fans. Though he'll be in the loosing team, would be nice to see him bat. Eager to know more on this.

if players like laxman who is regarded as test player is playing in ipl,why nt dada? Ganguly was a successful odi player with over 10000 odi runs, had an attacking game which is ideally suited to 20-20 format still no franchaizee selected sourav in the auction before ipl-4. Happy & eager to watch dada play

  • Shanmugarajyadhav on May 3, 2011, 12:31 GMT

Dada back in IPL.....lol......i'm sure even the domestic Indian bowlers will bounce him off....lol

  • pin_swa on May 3, 2011, 12:31 GMT

Good Luck Dada! You truly entertained us during your playing days. Do ignore the negativity in people who do not want you back in cricket. Enjoy yr game and support Yuvraj. I hope you can win hearts of your million fans once again. Those against you anyway do not matter.

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:31 GMT

ok then welcome Ganguly and expecting sachin will be very busy at offside fielding

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:28 GMT

A few match winning innings with the bat or few good match turner catches or even few wickets with the slow medium pace on these low pitches just to show you quality as better comeback man for you fans... Plus some good tactics or on-field decision, which Yuvraj misses everyday on the field. That will do for this last time. All the best.

  • Gupta.Ankur on May 3, 2011, 12:27 GMT

really cant believe Pune have made such a dumb decision. ganguly was a good limited overs player back in 2003-4.

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:23 GMT

I love dada , but dada will you be able to bring the drowning pune warriors back to life or will you DROWN with them.

  • squarepeg on May 3, 2011, 12:23 GMT

What a match-up it will be when Pune plays Mumbai. Malinga vs Dada, mouth-watering prospect.

  • vipulcricmastermind on May 3, 2011, 12:22 GMT

Pune lads are playing really bad.. they really need a think tank to gel the team together,, nobody is better than Ganguly.. i hope he will bring stability to the batting order.. good luck

  • sukraat on May 3, 2011, 12:21 GMT

Seriusly i jst hop n pray dat dada prforms well n givs a tight slap on all d ppl who didnt hav faith in him(v al knw who m tokin bout) n his ever increasin critics, n dose who v writtn him off. Cum on dada show d world dat y u r calld mastr of comebacks:-)

  • squarepeg on May 3, 2011, 12:19 GMT

Wish Sourav all the best, never mind if he is doing it for personal gains, be it money or fame. if only he cud make up his own mind what makes him tick, ... tv commentary, newspaper columns, tv shows, ad/brand promo, limelight. Surely its not cricket since he plays for Bengal only to keep fit for the IPL, where there is lots of money n tv coverage.

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:18 GMT

Such a great decision, I was not happy for his exceed, also if possible bring LARA good to watch IPL

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:17 GMT

how many times Ganguly has to prove that he is the best come backer???

  • Arindom86 on May 3, 2011, 12:07 GMT

Dada was d best and will remain the best. His return was inevitable. In IPL4,he was a victim of some politics and he always had been a victim of politics throughout his career. How can Sharukh forget Dada??????.Now he will show him what metal Dada is made of. DADA U ROCK N WILL ALWAYS DO.

  • on May 3, 2011, 12:06 GMT

I can't believe this... This will be comeback number infinity for Dada.... I love you, Dada, was missing you badly... Make a royal comeback and shut up everyone for the last time... I know you can still do it. Wish you all the best Dada, you are always the BEST... Whenever I fail, fumble in life, you inspire me... do it one more time

  • mrcool on May 3, 2011, 12:03 GMT

PUne already lost 6 consecutive games coz of slow batting from top order...and if they adds ganguly in top order then again yuvraj and uthappa wont get enough overs while chasing big score..if ganguly opens the innings pandey should not play..uthappa at no 3 and yuvi at no 4 is right batting order

  • rAmKirAn__nAAnI on May 3, 2011, 12:00 GMT

brave move by pune considering the fact that this year IPL pictes are more bowling friendly :) Anyways all the best DADA

  • Tiptop32 on May 3, 2011, 11:58 GMT

Pune is my team now. I will watch IPL from now on. East or west DADA is best.....

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:54 GMT

dada u were looking better as a commentator during World cup.....

  • Shafi79 on May 3, 2011, 11:54 GMT

LOL ... Pune is already last so i guess it cant get any worse ... :)

Seriously though - Ganguly no doubt is a great player but when he is not captain he seems to have a very disruptive influence on the dressing room. Good luck to Yuvraj :)

Thats the reason no one wanted him at the auction. If not he is definitely more valuable than Laxman and Mohamed Kaif for sure.

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:53 GMT

dada dada....to be honest i didnot watch any of the matches so far in ipl4...for the last 3 seasons i supported kkr....i ll be glued to tv frm tommorrow for remaining pune matches..whatever the result ganguly in the field brings lot of excitement....waiting eagerly 15 hrs to go...ipl going to rock

  • MeowCat on May 3, 2011, 11:50 GMT

i'd like him in DD but oh well....atleast i'd still see him

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:47 GMT

what a glad news. Dada back to play and show his performance to all and particular to owener of Kolkatta knightriders.......... I thank to Owener of Pune Warri. Everybody knows Dada is very talented and great batsman in Indian team. But unfortu he was refused. Now he back again to play.

OH DADA UUU BEAUTY...IT WILL B GR8 TO WATCH DADA BACK IN ACTION.....

  • PradeepR on May 3, 2011, 11:44 GMT

Pune have nothing to lose and unlike some of the other local players he will at least not drop catches and certainly is a good bat.

  • cricketizgood on May 3, 2011, 11:43 GMT

Its good to see Ganguly back... Pune has nothing to loose as they already have lost a lot. Dada might turn things around for them. Shahruhk dropped dada might turn as a boon for pune. Good luck DADA. Would love to see SACHIN against SAURAV

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:43 GMT

That Dada is a sportsman of steadfast determination is certain without an iota of doubt. And this chance to play will only help him show his critics what he is made of. The stay with Pune warriors-if fruitful-will do only good to the aura of Sourav Ganguly, who brought the Indian team to winning ways-while it was staring down the doom...

  • CricketChat on May 3, 2011, 11:42 GMT

Pune's choice easily backfire. This would be a touch come back for Ganguly. Past reputation will do him no good in T20s. Don't know if he was even trying to stay in playing shape during IPL4 thus far. Last I saw him, he was doing commentary from an air conditioned TV booth. For sure, this gig will either extend or finish his playing career.

  • TheSatyajitPatra on May 3, 2011, 11:42 GMT

I am so happy now... Going to watch the IPL, now onwords Cummmon DADA. No worries, we are with you as always. Even if you do not perform as expected, that does not matter anything. your presence is enough to add great value to any team. We love you. Thank you so much, PUNE.

@Horn.OK.Please - Eden garden will support Pune. No doubt about that. SRK humiliated Kolkata.

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:41 GMT

go dada go ahead we r waiting for u ..............

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:41 GMT

I Love you dada, I pray you score half century in your first game in IPL 2011

  • on May 3, 2011, 11:41 GMT

Ganguly is not at all fit for this format of the game. poor fielding standards, poor running between the wickts, and slowness in batting aggressiveness, this is what he will bring in Pune warriors team. Politics will be added disadvantage for them, not that he is wise captain.

I feel sad for Pune team.!

  • SARATKP on May 3, 2011, 11:39 GMT

Its not at all good decision, anyway best wishes for ganguly and pune warriors

Its time Ganguly hung his boots up. What is he trying to prove when he was summarily rejected by all the franchisees? But the crave for money is irresistible.

Better some young and upcoming player is signed by Pune team managers.

  • vish57 on May 3, 2011, 9:54 GMT

Good news for Ganguly, deserves to be in any IPL Team considering 70 Indians are needed in playing XI in 10 playing teams; Rather Ganguly should lead the team as we saw Yuvraj may lack in captainship skills under pressure. Good luck, hope pune team won't bench him after 2 matches like VVS Laxman being treated by Kochi. Class players will adopt to any situation and Ganguly is indeed a classy player. People's memory are very short to forget the contribution of players such as Laxman, Ganguly, not to deserve a place in domestic tournament like IPL.

  • stevejohnson1010 on May 3, 2011, 9:25 GMT

So unfair of BCCI to ignore a man who is responsible for indian cricket turnaround from an average team to a world beater! Finally he has been chosen and I am sure he will hammer the bowlers all over the world in IPL as he did in his ODI comeback few years ago. If average T20 players like Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman can continue playing, then why not DADA who was better ODI player than these two at any point of time in his career. He can still dance down the track to fastest bowlers in the world and demolish them as he used to do with Ntini, Pollock, Kallis and other. Commendable job Pune!!!

  • on May 3, 2011, 9:24 GMT

  • symsun on May 3, 2011, 9:01 GMT

Wovvv!! Pune has lot of hard hitters (Pandey, Uthappa, Yuvi, Ryder) who can smash the ball out the park but they definitely need someone like Ganguly to steady the ship at the top order like Sachin for MI. All the best Pune! Its time for you to rock back!!

  • sachusmap on May 3, 2011, 8:59 GMT

Great news for indian cric fans . Welcome dada . Do your job well. Make the pune team like indian team . Best of Luck . Lucky to see your Six's this season.

  • agniupadhyay on May 3, 2011, 8:58 GMT

We must realize that this man is not playing for money, it comes if it has to come, but for the sheer reason that he loves the game of cricket, the excitement of packed stadiums, the delicious burden of expectation and detractors. His financial status, excluding cricket and its ancillary forces, can dwarf a lot of present parvenu cricketers. We should salute the passion this man has.

More often than not, he has been unfairly criticized due to malicious factional interests. Take the IPL example. He played the kind of role Kallis, Dravid or Tendulkar don now, with similar strike rate. What he didn't have in the first few seasons is a consistent bunch of cricketers who could compliment him with rampant hitting. This is only one example. His role to shape a new Indian team out of the morass left by elite, corrupt cricketers, his tapping into the rich canvas of mofussil India, the ethos of fairness and transparency he evolved--are often underplayed now. Its time we give this devil his due!

  • on May 3, 2011, 8:57 GMT

Browse through these comments, check FB/twitter pages and watch the news and you'll know the buzz is back in the IPL. Wonder how corporate biggies, who are supposed to be masters in marketing, publicity and PR had missed the trick. The IPL is 40% cricket and 60% entertainment. Why deprive the fans of the latter?

  • coolchaitu on May 3, 2011, 8:33 GMT

  • on May 3, 2011, 8:07 GMT

Will someone pick up Lara as well? This would be classic!!!

  • Willowarriers on May 3, 2011, 8:06 GMT

I don't understand these team owners. Fine they have $. But why waste it? If I was a team owner I would never buy the likes of Ganguly, Laxman and may be even Dravid. You can't go by the name and be like oh this guy has so much experience. Question is: does he have the power, fitness and ability to do well in 20-20 cricket which is entirely different. A lot of the teams seem to have no clue and seem to be picking players by their general reputation rather than specifically looking at 20-20 credentials. Bad investment.

  • on May 3, 2011, 8:05 GMT

DADA!!! Now I just get the feeling that Pune Warriors India will be able to have thier Dadagiri in this IPL... ALL THE BEST DADA...You ROCK

I know people will come back harsh on this with their stupid cricket gyan and will question Pune warriors about this selection. But it does not matter I guess. Dada fans will finally get a chance to see him playing and I am sure he will come back with a bang, as he always does! Good luck Dada and Pune!

Welcome back Dada. Hoping to see you in action in the next match.

  • Amant on May 3, 2011, 6:30 GMT

Well...this seems to be the tactical move from owners, mainly considering lack of captaincy qualities in Yuvi...

  • on May 3, 2011, 6:30 GMT

Pune would have been pick him earlier...as they r struggling to get into the top 4...

  • on May 3, 2011, 6:28 GMT

DADA always makes the most of his second chances... but this time will he???
