For a large part of his career, it was tough being Sachin Tendulkar. In the IPL, it's tougher being Virender Sehwag. After having watched his bowlers take wickets off no-balls and his fielders drop sitters, the Delhi Daredevils captain took his frustration out on the Deccan Chargers with a blistering century, his first in Twenty20s. The assault bettered his masterpiece against Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and stunned Deccan into offering him two chances. Unmindful of the complete lack of support from his team-mates, Sehwag cashed in and drowned Deccan in a flood of boundaries that took the bite out of a challenging total. The next highest score was James Hopes' 17.

Delhi's bowlers had been profligate in letting Deccan surge to 175, and their top order, barring Sehwag, let the pressure get to them. Aaron Finch, Naman Ojha and Venugopal Rao combusted against seam as Sehwag watched bemused from his end. From 25 for 3 in the sixth over, only Sehwag could have taken Delhi home, and he did it in some style, moving from 8 off 13 balls to 119 off 56, pushing Deccan to the brink of elimination.

Sehwag has made a career out of sticking to his guns regardless of the situation, and his approach today was no different. Two balls after Venugopal Rao top-edged a pull off Ishant Sharma, Sehwag shuffled across and glanced a boundary from the middle-stump line to fine leg. In the next over, Travis Birt struggled against Daniel Christian, getting beaten three times in four balls, as the asking-rate crossed eleven at by the end of seven overs.

Sehwag broke free in the next over, bowled by IPL debutant Ishan Malhotra. The first ball disappeared over deep square leg, the next over deep midwicket. Two more boundaries followed, as Sehwag looted 23 off the over. As if to dispel the notion that he had targeted just the newcomer, Sehwag plundered 13 off the next over, from Christian.

Sangakkara brought on spin, so often Sehwag's strength as well as weakness. Sehwag displayed his strength first ball, dancing down and launching Amit Mishra over the straight boundary. The weakness was on display next ball, as he rushed out again but ended up slicing to sweeper cover. That is when Deccan decided to return the earlier favours, substitute Ankit Sharma clanging a simple chance. Sehwag gladly guided the third ball through third man for four.

Advantage Honours even

Birt departed in the 11th over, having contributed four runs to a partnership of 61 off 28 balls. Sehwag continued to ignore the procession at the other end, dispatching Mishra for three consecutive fours. The second of those boundaries slipped into the boundary from Ravi Teja's grasp, after he had managed to get both hands to the chance.

With 69 needed off 48, Sangakkara brought Dale Steyn back. Steyn dug one in short, Sehwag got on top of it, and flashed it past backward point. A desperate Sangakkara turned to Bharat Chipli's gentle medium pacers. Mistake. Sehwag brought up his hundred off the first ball, and then creamed the next two for sixes. Twenty-seven needed off 30. Game over. Though Steyn had Sehwag caught behind in the 17th over, the remaining batsmen managed to complete the heist.

Victory was looking far away for Delhi when they had allowed Deccan to run amok on a bouncy pitch. Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan had chances grassed, and JP Duminy and Christian would have been dismissed within the space of three balls, had Yogesh Nagar not over-stepped twice in the 15th over.

Two of the four reprieved batsmen made Delhi pay dearly. Sangakkara doubled his score to make 44, and Duminy went better, clattering four sixes on his way to converting 23 off 18 deliveries into 55 from 31. The no-balls meant what should have been 114 for 5 in the 15th over turned into 175 for 5 in 20 overs.

Sangakkara's partnership with Duminy was a stop-start affair, with punchy and edged boundaries alternating with swings-and-misses. More luck was to come Deccan's way when Morkel dropped Sangakkara at short fine leg off Ajit Agarkar, and then failed to get near the ball when Dhawan top-edged a pull off the next delivery.

After Dhawan fell, Sangakkara's aggression allowed Duminy to play himself in before launching into an onslaught. Duminy, who had made 77 runs in five previous games, hardly looking like the batsman who had been struggling for runs. He added 71 in 33 deliveries with Christian, as Deccan made 108 in the last ten overs. It counted for little in the end.

viru is really entertiner..when he stand one side the opposite captain can't control anything..he didnt look bowler he looks only bowl and he used to enjoy flying the bowl over the studium..viru we are waiting for another thirilling innings

I think sewagh will bat against deccan, he has capacity to score 150 runs from 50 balls. Sewagh is the most dangerous player in all time.

Great innings has been described very beautifully by the columnist...Captain leading from the front. DD has been an one man army all through the tournament.

Posted by BULTY on (May 7, 2011, 4:14 GMT)

Sehwag's century & performance in this match was too classy(no matter where it was achieved) both for its quality & for the circumstances in which this was achieved. The figures speak for themselves; the next highest individual score being 17 by James Hopes. Any other player would have buckled under the pressure; but not Sehwag. He had been very angry at the silly manner in which his team mates got out in a previous game, flinging the bat down in utter frustration. No wonder the experts put this performance as the best in T20s; international, world cup, IPL or any other T20 tournaments. Hats off to this player who can be totally destructive, if the situation demands. It is sad that the team is lunging at the bottom half of the points table and chances of their qualifying for the play off appear too brim at this stage. However, miracles do happen and hope one such miracle help DD qualify and we can see more such performances from Sehwag.

@ Sam Dutta: Comparing Sachin and Sehwag is like comparing apples and oranges. Sachin is in a different league of his own and Sehwag has his credentials to prove his claims as well... But saying things like "X, Y and Z guys are better than Sehwag" is hard to digest... One of the only 2 batsmen (the other being Sir Don) to have four scores of 250+ in test match cricket alone is good enough to stake a claim among the VERY BEST to have played the game. He is different; he is one of a kind; and of course he's DAMN entertaining...

P.S: Chetan Sharma's hundred was more entertaining than watching Sehwag's hundred? Tell me... you should either really hate Viru or really love Chetan... which one's it?? :)

sehwag is all time superb...

Posted by   on (May 6, 2011, 20:46 GMT)

Dc are being badly let down on the field. This game they lost because they dropped 2 easy catches off a man like Sehwag. Last game they dropped Yusuf pathan and lost because of that. The game before they dropped hussey who went onto score 46 runs. Apart from the DC bowlers bowl terrible full tosses at the depth....

Posted by kumarcoolbuddy on (May 6, 2011, 15:46 GMT)

Sehwag is definitely a very good player and let him play like that. There is no need to exaggerate his play. Like "One of best IPLs", "only player who can score like this", "One man Amry". He was supposed to play like that and so did. Infact he was supposed to play like this from starting and atleast now he realised.

Posted by Deepkar on (May 6, 2011, 15:11 GMT)

Sehwagh is talented batsman but not good captain he have pathan and agarkar to use as hitters but he never use them and nagar, rao and All just score at run a ball why dont try agarkar at 4 or 5 as he can score fast 20-30 and his wicket dosent matter or pathan for that?

Posted by   on (May 6, 2011, 14:46 GMT)

Let me tell u my dear friend Sam Dutta, Sehwag is one of those players who can demolish any bowling attack on his day.He is the only guy in the indian team who doesnt change his batting style whether he is playing test onedays or T20 & still so much successful in all formats. you are talking about drop chances so let me remind you sachin too escaped atleast 5 chances against pakistan in the semi final & still couldnt capitalise on those chances. so escaping chances & scoring on them is the part & parcel of the game but that doesnt take away the greatness from both the players.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2011, 12:45 GMT)

Sehwag's innings was very average. I'm not sure what all the commotion is about. He was dropped at least twice - both sitters. He may be an OK cricketer, but humble definitely not. He has the gall to add himself to the same league as Sachin and Gilchrist. Please! Mr. Sehwag - you will never be Sachin, not even remotely. Maybe like a Chris Gayle. Even Chetan Sharma's ODI hundred was more interesting. Sachin, Gilchrist, Lara and scores of others are way better than Sehwag. Talented? Yes, of course. Among the best? Far from it.

The last line in the commentary in Cricbuzz was awesome. "Virender Sehwag beats Deccan Chargers by 6 wickets". What a player!!!

I enjoyed the comments on this thundering batsman from Delhi... 1=11! Master of Cricket! and many more like that.... I thoroughly enjoyed this priceless innings of Sehwag. He is the man of masses! He is the heart of Indian batting. We are lucky such a genius is our opening bat! Indian cricket is blessed with such unique players, no wonder Team India is No.1 in ICC ratings...

sehwag is the only player in the who should had won this match for any team 7 overs 30/3 sehwag is the one of the fw players around the world whocan win that and he did that in style what a layer he is simply awesome>>>>.............................

The way sehwag leads his team is not ubiquitous in nature

Posted by Aussasinator on (May 6, 2011, 10:00 GMT)

There can be no words or normal comarisons to describe Sehwag or his approach to such incredible batting. He's a once in a lifetime player. He hammers the bowling, all the while looking like he's meditating.

Posted by vswami on (May 6, 2011, 9:09 GMT)

Its absurd to analyse Viru based on averages. When he wins games for his team, he does all on his own. Even if he clicks 3 out of 9 matches, he wins the 3 entirely on his own. The other 10 players should take care of the other 6 matches. Statsguru hasnt figured out how to measure winning a match on your own.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2011, 9:09 GMT)

Does this man, er this phenomenon called Sehwag have any respect for the system, game or its tenets? He goes through the motions of changing bowlers and giving them their desired field and still ends up conceding 175.

Did he care. I think not. He just picks up his bat and herds the game home. Just like that, attaching no importance whatever to what others, including his teammates do.

Hurrah for a genius! There wont be another soon.

Posted by Samar_Singh on (May 6, 2011, 8:47 GMT)

Sehwag is a class, his bat speaks for him...he is the only one who totally demoralizes a bowler no matter who it is ... he is truly the only match winner for India ... remaining are accumulator or match savers only playing for personal mile stones and records ..

@bismoy, salute to your cricketing knowledge!!!!!!!!!There are hubdreds of flat pitches in d world and thousands of batsman played on it. still only few has managed to score 2 triple centuries @ higher level.if u meant dat shewag is a flat track bully, i request you to look @ the statistics of d batsmen who hav scored around or more than 50% of runs out of total team's contributionin one innings, viru will b rite der.I remember couple of them atleast.or is it becoz it become flat ven viru bats and become turner wen others do?. cricket greats like Ian chappel, grahm pollock think dat Viru is d most devasting batsman in modern era (remember Sir V richards).Pollock even said that he wouldn't go to d ground to watch a India/SA match if sewag is not playing.Sachin is a great player. And u dont hav to degrade viru to praise sachin. even he doesn't like it!!!!!!!!!

@kumarcoolbuddy........... hello wat do u think abt viru... two 300's and u told dat he scored duck in final... but wat happened in 2003 final... only he scored 80's and sachin out of 4.... few days back @ kochi slow pitch he is de only batsman managed to score.... in NZ pitch when whole team failed 2 score, he is de only batsman 2 score back 2 back centuries.... cmmon viru is de best batsman in de world, india had ever produced.... he is fearless, play only fa his team.... he deserve more dan anyone.... VIRUU.... prd 2 be ur fan.......

I agree with others say regarding Sehwag...a great player on his day. Yesterday was his day and he did what was expected of him. I also understand that Sehwag did not play a big innings against any other team except for Bangladesh but he consistently was making runs between 30-40 in all games and that made a huge difference because they were such runs which broke the back of the opponent at the very beginning. This suggest the expectation every indian have on Sehwag whenever he is playing compare to any other player in the team. If Sachin gets out at 30 no one speaks about him as a failure in that particular matches but for Sehwag that is considered as a failure to score runs. I believe that itself is self explanatory for all commenting on Sehwag for any matches that he plays for the country. Don't forget that in one days as well he is averaging around 35 with a strike rate of over 100 which is extraordinary. For any other player its considered as superb record.

Remarkable innings by Viru! He once again proved he is the Master of Cricket! Well Done!

Posted by mogan707 on (May 6, 2011, 6:32 GMT)

When Sehwag's team-mates were dropping catches, taking wickets off noballs, as a fan of Delhi Daredevils,I myself was frustrated so much that there was no hope that Delhi would win. Then Imagine how Sehwag would have been frustrated with none of his Indian team-mates contributing much to the teams' performance,he should have forgot all that had happened previously and played a mind-blowing innings. When no one contributed with the bat,he single-handedly won this match for Delhi.I suspect there are more panic button pressers in Delhi than any other team.Their squad contains almost all the Indian players who have lost hope of making it to the Indian squad and are now losing hope of even making it to the league sides. Heavy ask for Delhi to qualify for play-offs.

Posted by P.Srikanth on (May 6, 2011, 5:55 GMT)

I wonder how many matches India lost if Sehwag could not play like this. However, it was a master class from the Najagarh Nawab. But I really feel sorry for the Chargers who just cannot win matches on their home turf. The problems was in the auction. You just cannot let out players like Rohit, Venu, Suman, RP.Singh who have performed so well for the team. Moreover, unlike CSK and MI they haven't retained any player who won them IPL2. For example, Dan Christian was an unknown commodity and was playing first time in India and too a medium pacer, who cannot play spin well. It is not his mistake but they bought him for huge sum and played all the games with not much rewards......Sorry DC......bad selection, strategy and planning......they lost the glory brought by Adam Gilchrist.

Posted by Emancipator007 on (May 6, 2011, 3:49 GMT)

@MaruthuDelft "I withdraw any disrespectful comments I earlier had on Sehwag. Sorry." You pre-empted me!. Maruthu has has been comparing Sehwag, the most attacking and unique Test opener in Test history with one Paul Valthaty, saying that Paul who was NEVER considered good enuf to play EVEN 1 first class match should replace Viru. Some fans should just stick to watching -and more so T20- instead of commenting. Valhaty was badly exposed to the extreme pace of Tait, something which all discerning cricket observers should notice. Last year, young tyros like S. Tiwary, Rayudu, Bisla, Dhawan could not cope with or struggled with express pace too (just 4 overs!).Whereas, Rohit Sharma shows why he is the most talented young Indian batsman (only flaws; lack of temperament, concentration and motivation) handling pace with ease in all matches.

Posted by bismoy on (May 6, 2011, 2:36 GMT)

@iata123 This shows your lack of cricket knowledge comparing flat track bully to worlds greatest batman of all time "Sachin".We still remember the great zero Shewag scored in WC final...ohh he scored only against bangaldesh,,,,,what was his contribution in wc quarterfinal??semifinal??final??talk of hollow greatness!!

Some of the selections in this IPL are strange . Dropping Ojha for some unknown Indian bowler. The overseas players Delhi has on its bench and playing Finch,Birt etc.. Deccan Chargers playing an out of form White and not Duminy until today. Tuskers not playing Owais Shah who is an experienced batsman and a good player of spin and playing guys like Klinger. What is going on? Even with other teams you see these things happening and cannot understand it. And the fielding especially catching by most teams has been absymal

INDIA WON THE WORLD CUP

Posted by kumarcoolbuddy on (May 5, 2011, 23:26 GMT)

@Nabarun Mondal, I agree DC lost most of the matches but that was due to poor fielding. DC batted well and better than other teams but fielding is at its worst. Infact today DC had more chances but big difference was Pragnya Ohja being replaced by new comer who had given highest runs in an over. Its surprising that Pragnya Ohja didn't play but its all part of game. With low-profile players it gave very gud fight. After all this IPL (20-20) and you donno what happens next.

Posted by kumarcoolbuddy on (May 5, 2011, 23:11 GMT)

@iata123, First part of your comment is perfectly alright "----This is the Reason i always rate Sehwag th best player of all time even ahead of sachin---" becasue you have your own view and taste. But second part of your comment where you compare Sehwag and Sachin is uncorrect. Tell me why Sehwag couldn't win other games and why is DD lower in points table? If sachin is playing for records why is he winning the matches? Infact Sachin scored very well in most of the matches.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2011, 23:04 GMT)

I cannot understand why people compare individuals? Sachin is Sachin, Sehwag is Sehwag Kumar is Kumar and Mahela is Mahela. All of them are great players if you are half good as any of them you can get into most of the sides.

Posted by NEPTUNE5 on (May 5, 2011, 22:41 GMT)

WHY IS DELHI NOT PLAYING COLLIN INGRAM & ANDREW MCDONALD. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY WHY THEY KEEP WASTING TIME WITH PLAYERS LIKE TRAVIS BIRT, AARON FINCH & OTHER OVERSEAS PLAYERS NOT PERFORMING. DON'T THEY SEE THEIR MIDDLE ORDER IS VERY FRAGILE.

Wah Viru!! Truly the best IPL innings I have ever seen. @iata123 Why is it necessary to drag Sachin into every discussion and compare every achievement of every batsman with him. Just let the man be. Another thing I don't understand is how a batsman play for records and not for a team. Does he decide to not get out and score a lot of runs at a rate better than most international players? But then isn't that what a batsman is supposed to do? And if I am not mistaken all runs made by a batsman do count towards the team total don't they? Please explain.

This loss shows why Sangakkara is not a good captain. What are you thinking bringing in a part timer to bowl at Viru? Sanga had a better team and could not win World T20 or the World cup 2011.I don't think he could win any competition. Mahela is a very much better Captain. Hats off to Viru. One of the most fascinating T20 inning I have ever seen. Sanga couldn't do anything when he captain last IPL so it this IPL. I think he is better as a player not as a captain. Its my opinion. Sorry Sanga facts are stubborn.

After seeing Sehwag's batting no one wud stop themselves appreciating his batting. Happy for him. Not to repeat but DC has good batting and worst fielding which is called awkward combination. If you see at score board bowlers of DC are not matching between themselves. By the way why did Sanga replace Pragnya Ohja with new comer despite Pragnya Ohja being a wicket taker for DC. Juts one over [of new comer] made a big difference and ofcourse sloppy fielding as usual. They cud not hold catches at any time. But well fought with low profile team. Hope in next IPL DC won't come with same team.

HA HA. Now DC is a joke. DC is this years KKR. Oh wait - no - that has to be Pune. They have done all the right things - even recruiting Yuvi and Dada. So it will be pune I presume. But DC will give a tough fight. Oh wait - wont Pune will play DC 2 times?

[waits for those 2 matches - they would dictate who would be this years KKR]

Viru is a great player but a poor captain. This way, he will have to do the impossible task of winning rest of the matches single handedly as today.

Sehwag is truly a genius. Though many ppl dont give him the credit he deserves, but to me, he is among one of the Legends of the game !

This is the Reason i always rate Sehwag th best player of all time even ahead of sachin Cause sehwag plays for the team an Sachin plays for records
