Virender Sehwag will miss the rest of the IPL after deciding to undergo surgery on his injured right shoulder. The operation will take place later this week and, with recovery time pegged at six to eight weeks, it should rule him out of India's upcoming tour of the West Indies from June 4, and perhaps even the England series that begins in mid-July.

Sehwag picked up the injury, a slap lesion or labrum (shoulder blade) tear, during the 2009 IPL. He travelled to England for the World Twenty20 in 2009 carrying the injury, but did not play any of India's matches and consulted with Andrew Wallace, the London-based surgeon who had worked on Sachin Tendulkar's tennis elbow.

A BCCI source said it would take a minimum of six to eight weeks for Sehwag to recover and following rehabilitation protocols will be important. "The possibility of Sehwag missing the England tour is high," the source said.

"It will be a miracle if he plays another match," PB Vanchi, director of GMR Sports, owners of Delhi Daredevils, said. Delhi - who will now be led by James Hopes - are presently seventh in the points table and, with three games left, have a slim chance of making it to the qualifiers.

Vanchi said the decision was taken after Sehwag held talks on his injury with the BCCI, who advised him to undergo surgery as soon as possible. "He has a problem, he struggled in the last match too. The BCCI is making the arrangements for the surgery," Vanchi said. "They are waiting for a date. If he needs surgery we are not going to be coming in the way."

Sehwag confirmed the development and is expected to travel to London at the earliest for the surgery. The injury is the same one that had ruled him out of the two World Twenty20s and, more recently the one-day series in South Africa in January. Sehwag was declared fit in time for the World Cup after having undergone rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Though he did not bowl during India's victorious campaign, Sehwag finished seventh overall in the run charts, in the tournament, including a blistering century in the opening game against Bangladesh.

Sehwag's decision to play the IPL was always going to be potentially risky, especially in light of the heavy workload during the World Cup. But he had the dual responsibility of leading Delhi as well as being their best batsman. Sehwag is currently the top scorer in the IPL with 424 runs and his loss is likely to further hamper Delhi's chances, who have managed just four wins out of their 11 games played so far.

No Sehwag means no cricket for me. :( Other Indian players so much boring that I can't dare to watch a test match at all. I wish he gets well soon. So, that we could see the most destructive batsman in the World play again. :) He is the best and no one is even close to him.

Posted by Stark62 on (May 10, 2011, 18:12 GMT)

What a coincidence!

It's finally time for him to face some real swing bowling (SA is more seam) but then he gets himself injured.

Why play IPL over country?

If he had that operation straight after the WC then, he would have made the ODI series against the Windies (possibly).

What a farce!

People have a very short memory. Until last year, Vijay wasn't even a regular for Chennai though he had already made his Indian Debut as an opening batsmen in Tests. Everyone considered him a solid batsman whose style was not suited for IPL then. I find it amusing that he is considered to be a mere IPL player now because he had one good season...! This is like people dismissing Dravid's capability to be a very good ODI batsman just because he happens to be a great Test player but in reverse. That said, Vijay may struggle against the swinging and short deliveries in England but the Carribean tracks are not as pacy or bouncy as they used to be so he may get a chance to gain further confidence there. Vijay has always looked stylish and composed but never had an extended run in the Test squad since Sehwag and Gambhir have been rock solid openers. Vijay is thus the obvious contender and others in the running (Raina, Yuvraj, Sharma, Pujara, etc.) are only middle order batsmen.

Now,tell me what he(TAMIM IQBAL) has prove to get credit by the IPL Team's.What we see now there are so many ordianry foreign player having no international experience been kept by the IPL team's- for cric_fanatics

Cricket without sehwag is boring...he must be around to show over rated bowlers their real worth..still remember the carnage against gul...poor guy...

Posted by cric_fanatics on (May 10, 2011, 13:01 GMT)

@Tarik Imam...i concur..he is a fantastic batsman..being a bangladeshi he doesnt get much credit though...

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 12:54 GMT)

this is pathetic !!!!!!!!!it was all clear even before the world cup that sehwag required a surgery for his shoulder .so why didnt he go under the knife straight away after the world cup, why this affection towards the ipl ...it has cost us dearly . without sehwag india's potency as a side comes down almost one level , so why was he allowed to play in the ipl risking the important tours such as west indies and england ???????? board needs to answer these questions not all things can swept under the carpet and why mr gavaskar , mr manjrekar and other former indian players not highlighting this aspect.... i am bemused .

Mr. Shewag you and chirs gayle are the most dangerous openers and audience love to watch both of you. please dont play back to back matches.. you should take some rest in between. you are an national asset, and we would love to see u playing for India. Nation should be more important to you than money. We would love to watch you and Galye together in WI tour. here i found a very good article about chris gayle and his conflicts against WI board > http://cricketswing.blogspot.com/

This is just expected. These Cricketers have become slaves of IPL and completely ignoring National Team and Duties. There are losing Hunger, Desire, Passion, Fitness, Skill in IPL and are almost useless in National Duties.

Posted by KTiwari on (May 10, 2011, 10:14 GMT)

This will be blessing in disguise. There are plenty of options and folks are waiting for a chance. Pick from Manoj Tiwari, Rayadu, Rohit Sharma, Badrinath for tests may be Paul Valhaty and Robin Uthappa. Ravindra Jadeja can get second chance. He is quite a improved player now.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 9:21 GMT)

so we will again get to see boring cricket for three months becoz without sehwag there is no thrill in cricket

Posted by AjitNarayan on (May 10, 2011, 9:16 GMT)

HAHAHA look at these fools bagging Vijay. He has a modest average of 39 in tests, plus the average partnership in runs between himself and Sehwag is 65. No doubt Sehwag does most of the work, but there's proof that India get off to a solid start. I want to see Pujara at least against the WI.

Posted by Haleos on (May 10, 2011, 7:59 GMT)

Vijay a test cricketer? He is just good for IPL. Not even for ODIs.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 7:57 GMT)

If Sehwag to undergo shoulder surgery, then why not to try TAMIM IQBAL in place of him for the rest of the matches.Unfortunately non of the IPL team did not shown any interest a player like Tamim's calibre

Posted by mail2shiv on (May 10, 2011, 7:30 GMT)

It must be noted that Sehwag is having surgery now that Delhi are already out of IPL. Otherwise, he would have done so only after IPL. And guys like Vanchi are acting as if the problem has suddenly cropped up.

Was he not out of India's last tour to England too? But I think he should be back for it this time around..

Big loss for dhoni all these years he clearly depends on only the Legand sehwag now he will be in lot of pressure poor dhoni all the best . viru bhai pls recover fast we all really miss u no doubt one day u vill going to make one more triple century miss u a lot come fast atleast for england tour u r the best u r the legand in all formats of the game .. take care bhai i am really crying now god bless u bye

Posted by elangop on (May 10, 2011, 5:55 GMT)

BTW, cannot think anyone else other than sehwag, a match winner.. wish him quick recovery. mean time we can have someone like Vijay takes his place.

Posted by Alphus on (May 10, 2011, 5:53 GMT)

Valthathy should be in the Tour Spad's for WI and Eng..... he deserves it more than vijay or uthappa ... besides uthappa doesnt have a test temperament

Posted by elangop on (May 10, 2011, 5:52 GMT)

Hope Badrinath gets a chance now.. but for open I think vijay will fit better.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 5:26 GMT)

Go sehwag and get well soon : Its very heart breaking news that one. Sehwag is on gud form. he is the man who playing and leading the team delhi dare devils. Like shewag no one in that team, for replacing shewag i think rohith sharma is better to play one day and test. not like shewag but technically he is gud in batting

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 5:16 GMT)

We will miss you sehwag. Wish you a speedy recovery.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 4:56 GMT)

Well we don't need him against wi. Hopefully he will be back and should be back against england if the recovery period is indeed 6-8 weeks.

Posted by Rahulbose on (May 10, 2011, 4:31 GMT)

Wishing him a quick and full recovery. It will be a real loss if he misses the Eng tour.

Posted by mrcool on (May 10, 2011, 4:22 GMT)

I think robin uthappa is the right replacement for sehwag...even in test uthappa will play better than murali vijay given a chance but srikkanth knows only 1 replacement and that is murali vijay....average of 38 in tests is not big deal...vijay failed in tests too in many matches..and our media is also biased..vijay and rohit sharma getting chances after chances and player like badrinath and uthappa not getting it...still no one can oppose selection board

Posted by Farce-Follower on (May 10, 2011, 2:11 GMT)

Murali Vijay, the default option will be back. With his 15, 20 and at best 30. Kris Srikkanth will be a happy man.

Posted by Venky_Daredevil9 on (May 10, 2011, 2:00 GMT)

WI tour would be fine. Hope to have him back for the tour of England. In the mean time, India should try out Rayudu, Paul Valhatty and other youngsters who have performed well in the domestic circuit including the IPL. Yes, not to forget S.Badrinath.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 1:55 GMT)

Go sehwag and get well soon...

I think really Utapa or Pathan shoud be awarderd with one day spot especially in absensce of sachin at top...

I wud say vijay shud remain in place as test opener

Posted by SRT_GENIUS on (May 10, 2011, 0:43 GMT)

M.VIjay/Karthik/Badri are all good players, but now we know what to expect from them at international level (not too much). They basically lack the ability to take their game a notch above - somewhat like Rohit Sharma. Also, one should look at pure openers and not get someone in team just because he is "due a chance". (Else we will have a situation like VVS when he was forced to waste years in the opening slot).

Posted by   on (May 10, 2011, 0:41 GMT)

Vijay is a real test batsman none has suggested his name 20/20 is not like playing a Test match. Chennai cricketers are given step motherly treatment. Badri and Ashwin too are not recognized fully. Vijay plays correctly and could play swing bowling and English condition is suited for swing bowling.

Posted by dalok on (May 9, 2011, 23:56 GMT)

IPL has its cost. BCCI and India fans need to realize it. Stop supporting this waste of time.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 23:22 GMT)

Give Robin Uthappa a chance...NO Murali Vijay for sure Also Ghambir can open then every body move up the order and Pathan can find a place as #7

Posted by Whale_Fart on (May 9, 2011, 22:39 GMT)

I think it is a big opportunity for one of the youngsters to make in to India XI. Rayudu is my favorites to be tried out. I think even yoosuf Pathan can be tried for opening may be he clicks there, you never know.

Posted by anishtulsian on (May 9, 2011, 22:04 GMT)

We should not be depending on one player for tours like West Indies or England. Anyone could get injured anytime before or during a tour. I think India has good players like Ajinkya Rahane, Mukund who could replace Sehwag as an opener.

Posted by Valavan on (May 9, 2011, 22:03 GMT)

Sehwag's absence will hurt India in England. Probably England moves to top spot as SEHWAG is really crucial for India in tests outside sub continent.

Posted by crikbuff on (May 9, 2011, 21:01 GMT)

Sehwag's condition was well known, and the surgery is long overdue. It is only because of the IPL that he did not get it operated. Now India will miss him thru the England tour. It is time everyone realised how much damage is being caused by IPL.

murali vijayyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! opening!!!!!!!!!!!!!kill meeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hate murali vijay in onedayers!!!!!!!!!!! he will wastes the balls and score just 5-10 runs and he will throw his wicket.........

This is what i don't like abt international player and there commitment to IPL. Sehwag always knew he had shoulder injury and needs to fix it. but he gave priority to IPL for sake of big money and is now out of 2 series. This is what will happen to all India players who are playing IPL to mint money and have a heft bank balance

I will play BCCI for this thing. they somehow need to keep their players fit

Posted by MaruthuDelft on (May 9, 2011, 18:43 GMT)

I agree with @the_blue_android in the facts Sehwag really disappointed in the last SA tour and he couldn't really score big against better teams in the IPL. However it is due to his temperament. He has so much time to play the fast bowlers so I hope when he comes back he would play a few match winning knocks against England, Australia or South Africa but I still doubts his mind which is actually a little stupid; just see his interviews; his fans cover up his stupid comments saying he is straight forward.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 18:32 GMT)

Why didn't he take the break and have the operation done right after the World Cup? England tour is very important, and Sehwag will be be badly missed if he can't make it..

Posted by mrmonty on (May 9, 2011, 17:56 GMT)

Viru, please get well before the next IPL or Ind-SL series.

Posted by candyfloss on (May 9, 2011, 17:46 GMT)

While I am not a big fan of the IPL,I think the tournament should be shortened(get rid of it totally if possible).I am not convinced whether players like sehwag would be as menacing as they are in sub continent but the bigger problem is that we do not have a capable opener as a replacement and now Murali Vijay will come in to the team and score 20-25 runs and get out thereby the team will be denied of a solid platform.

Posted by uddeshmukh on (May 9, 2011, 16:50 GMT)

Why did he not plan the surgery immediately after the WC.....it wud have given him more time for recovery for the england series...remember eng is a strong test side. Is this another case of a player choosing cash rich IPL over the country?

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 16:12 GMT)

Get well soon. INDIA needs you.

Posted by cooljack_143 on (May 9, 2011, 15:58 GMT)

Sehwag SHOULD CONSULT DR.ELIYANTA WHITE..He is the best cure for cricketers like him.He can make sehwag play for WI and Eng tour as well.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 15:37 GMT)

This was bound to happen.. India had a hectic 2010 followed by a 1.5 month long IPL followed by a longer IPL in the summer season (which isnt a right time to play cricket in India, especially Chennai)... I m sure there wil b few more Indian International stars who wil join Sehwag at hospital and miss a low-profile WI tour.. Good chances India wil not hav a jolly time in WI like Pak and other teams have been having... Remember last year's Zimbabwe tour..

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 15:37 GMT)

Huge blow to Daredevil's campaign.....There is no hope of them making to the knockouts now...:(

Posted by kdarooka on (May 9, 2011, 15:16 GMT)

hiding injuries does not help in the long run,one should get the injury attended immediately when the same occured. One should not take risk by postponing action because important match is involved. It may help the team for one game but the career may be spoiled for long injury which may not heal later on and damage may be more severe

Posted by jimbond on (May 9, 2011, 15:13 GMT)

Rayudu has to be in the reckoning for some spot, though not necessarily that of the opener. He has been peforming for several years at the domestic level. As a bowler, Rahul Sharma's performance in 2020 is not enough yet- Ojha still is the tried and tested material. Manoj Tiwari for an overseas tour? Certainly not- I still remember how good pace bowlers can me him dance. Uthappa has talent though he has not done anything of note just now. Why not try L Balaji (if he is fit), Mithun, or Bhuvaneswar kumar (an allrounder of real potential- two to three years down the line).

Posted by jimbond on (May 9, 2011, 15:06 GMT)

@FinalWord I am not accusing Srikkanth merely of parochialism- it goes beyond that. I am writing from the frustration of watching Dinesh Karthik being inserted into the team using every possible excuse (I admit his state team mate Badrinath is far more deserving and got no chances)- Karthik playing as a batsman- with a first class average of around 30 on dead pitches. And if you think Akash Chopra doesnt play cricket any more, it is because you are unaware of the real cricket- which is Ranji Trophy. And Chopra is the opener who has shown wonderful defensive technique in pitches abroad (before Gambhir came along). Irfan Pathan is always worth a gamble. In the past few years, the quality of Irfan as a batsman (esp lower order) has never been at doubt- can play with a straight bat, has developed in recent years. His bowling had fallen apart, though his performance in lively pitches abroad - England, Australia- can be expected to be several levels above his domestic peformance.

This jus shows how low West Indies cricket has sunk. Every1 saying that India should send b team on West Indies tour or that they will still thrash the West indies with or without Sehwag. these words could have never even been whispered before in the history of Indian tours of West Indies. at best the Indian team would be hoping for a few draws & mayb a win here or there. of the 18 series between West Indies & India we have lost only 4. 2 of which were after Ambrose & walsh retired, & drawn 2. the only time before that we lost at home is when Sardesai & Gavaskar made over 1400 runs @ av over 100. combine those 2 great batsmen & our lack of a decent bowling attack & it was bound to happen. we lost 1 test match & the series @ queens park oval in 1970/71 i guess its now our turn to get our whippings lol circle of life

Sehwag is one of my most favourite players alongside Sachin, Yuvi and Dhoni. I'll definitely miss his batting (mostly his 4s & 6s) . SPEEDY RECOVERY SEHWAG !!!!

What A lame man for money ....why viru u opted for IPL ? you had shoulder injury at SA tour then some how BCCI rested you to make fit for world cup ....but then why did you chose to play IPL , you should have been resting and taking treatment surgery ....... THIS WARNING TO ALL SENIOR INDIAN PLAYERS ...FORGET IPL , FOCUS ON YOUR CAREER .

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 14:36 GMT)

Somebody had earlier commented about this and predicted exactly this would happen. It is true that West Indies has come down in standard, but still Sehwag should be player rather that and not IPL. I am a fan of IPL, but BCCI should not be doing this. Just because West Indies tour is next in line it does not mean people should support this saying he can miss it. I am 100% sure even if Australia tour is on after this he would have played with injury for money. I am sure this IPL is going to take Indian cricket down to depths from which it cannot climb back. If this is not a bad precedence, what is it. Pathetic!!!!

If this is the direction senior Indian players like Sehwag are going to take, preferring to miss international tours rather than IPL, what hope we can place in youngsters coming into the game? India's place at the top of the world game is certain to be a short-lived one.

Posted by moonflare on (May 9, 2011, 13:22 GMT)

India will surely miss Viru in the test team if he does not make it. When selecting a team for test matches performance in domestic Ranji should be taken into account and not bang bang IPL, specially for foreign tours. On that basis I strongly feel that either Rahane or Badri should get a place in the test team based on their first class averages. Rahane - 68 and Badri - 62 v/s Vijay - 51, Raina - 43, Rayadu - 42 and Karthik - 38. There surely is a big difference.

I ve nothing against IPL, and since Sehwag is the only crown puller for DD, it is obvious that he had to play. But since a similar incident has happened in the last 2 years as well with Sehwag (missing both T20 world cups right after IPL), he should have been more responsible this time around.

Posted by stormy16 on (May 9, 2011, 12:44 GMT)

I dont buy this blaming the IPL or the BCCI profiting. I think it all makes sense - They rested him from the SA one dayers to enable him to play the WC, and now that DD cant make the finals its time to have the surgery to ensure Viru is ready for Eng. If there is one series he could afford to miss its the WI tour and its a chance for someone like Vijay to have a shot. Viru is a top tricket so it makes sense to have him available for the top events and like it or not the IPL is one of the biggest. Imagine him missing the IPL and playing in the Windies which surely will be thrashing for the Windies with or without Viru and definltey not a top ticket item. Eng is and that's why they want the surgery now to be ready for Eng.

@Runster1, that sort of attitude will see India slide back down the rankings in no time. There's some people who will be very happy about this news. Namely Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy and Fidel Edwards. India have been in the sub-continent for a long time, West Indies are very different conditions. Senior guys like Sehwag would have been the best to acclimatise. I expect some of the younger Indian batsmen (and bowlers) to seriously struggle there.

i just fail to understand that why was there a need for him to play for a month after the wc and then go out...he shud hav gone for the surgery right after the wc and get himself ready for wi and eng tours!!now he is out for atleast 3 months!!he might even miss eng tour, which wud be huge blow to the team!!missing almost 7tests and chance to score tons of runs shud hav been on sehwag's mind but he chose to forget it!!i have been noticing this attitude change in viru for the past 4-5 months!!he is doing stuff that he never did before!!he has started taking some kind of pressure and making statements that he never bothered about earlier!!viru shud get his head clear and set his priorities right!!but this might be a very gud chance for the youngsters to show their talent and perform!!

why on earth does he have to go to london for it!!?

Posted by TheUltimateTruth on (May 9, 2011, 12:19 GMT)

jimbond's comments are completely unwarranted. It's the same Srikkanth that gave us the World Cup winning team, and a team that did well in South Africa. I don't see a regional bias in selections. Vijay and Karthik were chosen at a time when they were doing well. They were fair choices then. If there was a regional bias why was Badrinath so ignored while the likes of Rohit Sharma got numerous chances? Back up what you say with some evidence. You are recommending Akash Chopra? Is he even playing cricket anymore? And then you are recommending Irfan Pathan? When last did you follow cricket -- 2005? Irfan Pathan is a has been. Until he comes back into form with his bowling and batting, he is far behind the names mentioned above. Pujara would not be a good ODI pick. A. Rayudu would be the best replacement for Sehwag. Followed by Manoj Tiwary, S. Badrinath, and R. Uthappa. In the bowling dept, I hope the selectors include Rahul Sharma in the team ahead of Ojha or Chawla.

Posted by Lions11 on (May 9, 2011, 12:15 GMT)

I am mystified that lots of comments are moaning about DD future. Guess all of them are from Delhi. I hate to admit this but this is typical Sehwag. Earlier he missed two T20 world cup due to IPL and now he is going to miss more international cricket.

Posted by vipulsmistry on (May 9, 2011, 12:10 GMT)

Agree with Ryan Albuquerque. I was not at all supporting Delhi Daredevils this year just because it was not right on part of Sehwag to play IPL at all. He needed surgery as he had niggles even during the world cup. IPL has spoilt Indian players, they are going for money rather than playing for country. I don't know about WI tour but if he is not able to be part of England tour, specially test matches then it will be difficult for Indian to retain it's number one position in test matches. Anyways, wish Sehwag all the best for the surgery and wish he recovers in time for England tour.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 12:09 GMT)

Get well soon..Sehwag.. 1st fitness den cricket there are enough cricket for you .... Every 1 knows about your strength which u've proved in running IPL. So God 'll must help you....

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 12:08 GMT)

this is not the first time that Shewag missed out a tournament because of IPL. He was ruled out of last two World Twenty20s because of the injuries he sustained during the concluding IPL of both the years. and he's done it again this yr. he shud have gone for surgery straight away after WC and could have been ready for WI tour...but again it's the individuals call...

Posted by Sumeet.Gupta on (May 9, 2011, 12:03 GMT)

it's the greed of BCCI that may make Sehwag to miss the WI and England tour. It may be a monetary profit for the board to make him play in IPL even though he was unfit but it is a clear loss for us fans

Posted by squarepeg on (May 9, 2011, 12:02 GMT)

what a terrible news. get well soon viru, u r the best after sachin in all forms of game.

no sewag.. no dare... the team looks like 'delhi devils...'

Posted by vipinchaudhary2325 on (May 9, 2011, 11:54 GMT)

lol.... play IPL.. earn money......now time to take some rest for 3-4 months... International Matches are not so much imporant for Indian players now as dey get dere salaries from IPL.... why to play a Test Match... which last for 5 days.. and u only get 2.30 Lakh per Test Match.. play 1 IPL match and u get 10 lakh for every match.... gud going

Posted by sid.C on (May 9, 2011, 11:48 GMT)

wish u a speedy recovery Viru.. Hope u get fit in time for the England tour :)

Posted by raama153 on (May 9, 2011, 11:48 GMT)

For all the ppl who are saying he should have skipped IPL, C'mon.. don't be kids.. its obvious that India is prime, but then, you guys being in tat position, offering you cores of money just for 2mnths in a yr, would you guys miss them? and its entertaining.. be practical guys.. Sehwag was part of WC and IPL and its obvious that for WI tour they gonna rest seniors.. let the young champs go there and play a see how they perform..

Posted by HarishVS on (May 9, 2011, 11:48 GMT)

This is going to hamper India's chances of making it easy in WI tour. Team India minus Sehwag is like a wicket off a no-ball! I am not sure whether BCCI has made IPL mandatory for icon players like Sehwag! Otherwise how would he risk playing in this with such serious injury.. @jimbond - You make it a point. Vijay is totally useless outside subcontinent. He failed miserably in SA tour and has a definite weakness in his technique which is going to stay permanently as long as his career goes. Karthik is a very ordinary cricketer and very lucky to have already played in Team India. So we only hope that Srikkanth again will not come up with these two names for India ever for any form of cricket. We have already seen enough of them. Even Pujara was found wanting in that SA tour in whatever innings he played. So he is never going to make it for India as an opener. Hope we come up with a new name for partnering Gambhir in this tough tour.

Posted by rustyryan on (May 9, 2011, 11:46 GMT)

@ jimbond : First of all the team is yet to be announced. And both vijay and dinesh karthik are not as worse as Wasim jaffer who was given numerous chances. Den Srikanth is the selector of WC winning squad. So give him some respect mate. And vijay did wel in test matches when ever he gets the chance though he is very indifferent in odis. Then Badrinath is also a better player than pujara and pathan to make it to the test team. Badri was given chances in only 2 tests and labeled as a failure. Then pujara himself played only 4 test and all want him to get more chances though he failed miserably in SA series. Above al Viru is yet to be ruled out of both the series. So pls stop your parochialism.

Posted by wambling_future on (May 9, 2011, 11:45 GMT)

Isn't Sehwag suffering from shoulder injury since 2008 something? Even recent South Africa ODI series he missed because of that. Ideally he should have skipped IPL and gone for a proper rehab rather than getting injured for same injury over and over again. But unfortunately there is no one in BCCI who can talk sense to their own players. Unfortunately for them having all the International players in IPL is more important rather than having full strength team for International fixtures.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:40 GMT)

Sehwag was anyway not going for the windies tour. IIRC most senior players would have been missing that tour post IPL as the focus is england tour.

Posted by harshalb on (May 9, 2011, 11:38 GMT)

Last 2-3 years Sehwag has picked up injuries in IPL and then sat out T20 World Cups. Finally its good that he is going for surgery to end this circle.

Posted by Runster1 on (May 9, 2011, 11:38 GMT)

GOOD ON YA SEHWAG! REST! TENDULKAR should also rest for the rest of the ipl! Rest our old players so we can conserve our best players.

@West INDIES fans: we shud play our B team against u guys, U ARENT WORTH OUR A TEAM. LET OUR A TEAM REST BCCIIII!!!!

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:32 GMT)

hahah...........he s due to surgery since worldcup but he played ipl and now he ll undergo surgery and misss international cricket...........i think some more cricketers injury in pipeline..........lol

Posted by vswami on (May 9, 2011, 11:31 GMT)

Sehwag will be missed .. but its a great opportunity for a youngster to get a few games and prove his worth.

Posted by nzcricket174 on (May 9, 2011, 11:30 GMT)

Why is everyone screaming out about the Delhi Daredevils and the IPL? Shouldn't you guys be more fussed about the England tour? Sehwag is a large cog in the wheel that is to keep India's #1 ranking intact. If India do not win in England it could result in them losing points in the rankings. Remember India has not done statistically well in England so it would make sense to be worrying about one of your stars regarding the England tour and not the IPL.

Posted by Kalyanmukherjee on (May 9, 2011, 11:29 GMT)

Sehwag is likely one of the best batsmen of our times. Hope he recovers in time for the India ODIs. I agree with Jimbond's point on putting in Chopra or Pujara. Vijay/Dinesh Karthik don't seem to play well on fast wickets outside India (and not that well in India either) Kalyan Mukherjee Greenwich CT

Posted by Joby_George on (May 9, 2011, 11:26 GMT)

IPL will ruin the careers of many players. its too much fatigue & all playing because money is always above heaven

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:23 GMT)

SHEWAG IS NOT PLAYING MEANS INDIA'S BATTING ORDER WILL BE DIFFICULT TO HANDLE IN WEST INDIES TOUR BECAUSE ALREADY SOME PLAYERS WERE TAKING REST which means all YOUNGSTERS WILL be having chances to play for INDIA. I think irfan, rohit, rayudu, valathy, utappa and venugopal, rahul sharma etc...........

Posted by SamRoy on (May 9, 2011, 11:22 GMT)

His absence won't be felt in WI. I just hope he is fit in time for the tests in England. Otherwise way too much pressure on Gambhir, Tendulkar and Laxman to deliver every time (Dravid has become useless against good teams; should have retired after the the SL test series at home in late 2009).

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:16 GMT)

atleast he gets some rest..no use of playing WI TOUR

Posted by Provenance on (May 9, 2011, 11:14 GMT)

I seriously don't understand why people here are seething over Sehwag not giving IPL a miss. Guys, IPL teams are like companies and people like Sehwag et al are employees and until your employer grants you a holiday, you won't get that holiday! It is a very wise decision considering that Sehwag has tried as much as he could for Delhi Daredevils and there is no way they can qualify for Top-4 so instead of playing meaningless 4 matches to go, he goes for the surgery and even his employer understands that! Guys, it is very easy to criticise BCCI or any administrator but be practical! and as for lot of people seething and crying foul over money taking precedence - i would like to say them-get over it please! In fact ask such people - What would they have done if they would have got Rupees 10 crores or more to play for 6 weeks of cricket? Very easy to preach from outside and very difficult to follow when it comes on to you all....

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:09 GMT)

If selectors donot accept LEAVE LETTER/REST LETTER .. this is the result :P

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:09 GMT)

Thats 3 in a row. Unbelievable. The last two times he played the IPL he missed the world T20 due to injury and now this. Wat a coincidence

Posted by MarkBobbyChandy on (May 9, 2011, 11:08 GMT)

That's it. Game, Set and Match for the opponents.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:07 GMT)

Though i enjoy watching sehwag bat and he is a fantastic player, i'm hoping he is NOT fit for at least the west indies series so that badrinath can get another crack at test cricket, also pujara needs to step up with badri and rahane breathing down his neck

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 11:05 GMT)

he will miss the orange cap too !! :(

Posted by kalof123 on (May 9, 2011, 10:58 GMT)

without shewag delhi dare devils wont make it to the play offs, now IPL has only few competeing teams, Only 5 teams are doing well....

Posted by bowledYou on (May 9, 2011, 10:50 GMT)

Miss you in IPL, Sehwag.. Get well soon.. take care..!!!!

Posted by ammanna7 on (May 9, 2011, 10:48 GMT)

who wil capt delhi dareedevilsssssss

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:46 GMT)

This is nonsense. He should have gone for operation before the start of the IPL. BCCI dint allow so even other top players to rest too. Now the supporters and fans of india have to struggle during the tour of west indies.

Posted by nce8 on (May 9, 2011, 10:41 GMT)

I wanted to see more of Sehwag. Hopefully he plays in next tour

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:41 GMT)

He always gets injured in IPL and misses important tours like the next 2 tours... He doesnt know where to give more importance. He could have been careful on this while playing the IPL. But its the money, that is important for everyone and he did that .

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:41 GMT)

Oooohhhh its a big minus to the `DELHI DAREDEVILS... They won 4games with only grace of `Sehwag if he missed out the IPL then not only less chances to qualify no chances to qualify. I think so...

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:39 GMT)

Its fine he should not played Ipl if he is not fit. Best of luck sehwag for ur shoulder surgery. & Get well soon we have to see you on the ground Hitting shots out of ground............................

Posted by jimbond on (May 9, 2011, 10:36 GMT)

This should make everyone happy. Sewag- happy because he has made money from IPL and misses the uncomfortable WI tour. Srikkanth would be happy because now he would be able to push in one of his favourites Vijay/Dinesh Karthik as the opener in the team. My suggestion is - why not go with the tested Akash Chopra to partner Gambhir? Else, thrust that job on Pujara (who may otherwise miss being in the team- because of Yuvraj/Kohli/Raina, and Tend/Drav/Lax/Gamb/Dhon already entrenched). Opening with even Irfan Pathan may not be a bad bet (surely he cant be worse than Karthik/Vijay).

Posted by Duraianand2558955 on (May 9, 2011, 10:34 GMT)

If Shewag will miss the Windes tour means there should be a big loss for Indian Team in opening spot for both ODI & Test

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:31 GMT)

tamim could replace him if he was not bangladeshi.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:25 GMT)

delhi daredevils is done and dusted,as sehwag misses rest of ipl..... wont be even seeing them playing them from now on....

Posted by ChahalSaab on (May 9, 2011, 10:23 GMT)

thats horrible news for the indian team. i dont care about WI tour but i really wanna to see him playing in england.

Posted by   on (May 9, 2011, 10:19 GMT)

I hope he can play from the 1st test in Lords.India would have to play under much pressure to win test series in England without the great starts and match winning, fast 150-200 he provides. Its very unfortunate to lose such a player for such a big series for a unnecessary domestic 20-20 glitz like IPL.India can win the series in West Indies easily without him though,1-0 or 2-0.
