Chennai Super Kings v Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2011, Chennai May 11, 2011

Can Delhi compete without Sehwag?

40

Match facts

Thursday, May 12, Chennai
Start time 2000 (14.30 GMT)

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings are the team to beat in the IPL, yet again. Mumbai Indians may have done the early running and may be top of the table, but they have also twice collapsed dramatically for totals of less than 100. Contrastingly, it has taken either the elements or a special performance to conspire against Chennai, who are one of only two teams to have posted totals in excess of 180 on three occasions. With the ball, they have done just about enough to choke off opponents, which is evident from the fact that they have bowled out their opposition only once this season.

As if seven losses weren't enough, Delhi Daredevils now have to compete without Virender Sehwag, architect of three of their four wins so far, who will miss the rest of the IPL to undergo shoulder surgery. Delhi with Sehwag were average, Delhi without Sehwag will be poor, unless they can manage to step up considerably under new captain James Hopes. Chennai have been unbeaten so far at home this season, and will start as clear favourites on Thursday. A win will mean a play-off berth is more or less secure.

Chennai: WLWWW (third in points table)
Delhi: LWLWL (eighth in points table)

Team talk

It is impossible to replace Sehwag, but someone will have to take his place in the XI. It could be young Unmukt Chand, who had two torrid outings at the start of the season. Roelof van der Merwe could also get a game, but that would mean Colin Ingram having to miss out after only one match, in which he faced two balls.

Chennai have grown stronger after the arrival of Dwayne Bravo but what Wriddhiman Saha's role was in the previous match is anybody's guess, considering that he didn't keep, and would have batted at No. 8. At least S Anirudha can bat higher up or Joginder Sharma can bowl.

In the spotlight

After starting this season with three half-centuries and a 46 in five matches, David Warner's form has tapered off sharply, with only 26 runs in his next five innings. He was even left out against Deccan Chargers, but in the absence of Sehwag, his position at the top of the order acquires added importance, if Delhi have to challenge Chennai.

That Doug Bollinger has a better economy rate than even R Ashwin, who is usually difficult to get away, shows how important the fast bowler has been for MS Dhoni. He has chugged in and hustled batsmen with pace, bounce, angle and variation, whether at the start of the innings or at the death. Thirteen wickets from just eight games have made Chennai even more reliant on him.

Prime numbers

  • The highest total the in IPL is Chennai's 246 made in 2010; the highest this season is Delhi's 231
  • Chennai have the best win-loss ratio in the IPL, 1.43

Delhi will do better! Sehwag is a brilliant player but he is not good enough to lead because leadership is a complicated skill. Sometimes it would appear simple when a well performing captain leading from the fron by being an example but it is an illusion. I predict Delhi would do much better in the remaining 3 matches.

VARUN AARON THE DYNAMO IS BACK......REALLY IMPRESSEDM BY HIS SPEED.....HE JUST NEEDS A FEW WEEKS IN THE INDIAN TEAM ....THEN HE WILL SETTLE TO BOWLING 130 KMPH.....THATS THE TREND....dont know what they do ...but GURANTEED 20 KMPH LOSS ........!

THIS IS THE MOST 'NON-DELHI'DELHI SIDE,,,,,,,,first VIRAT IS IN RCB SINCE 2008,THEN NEHRA IS WITH PUNE, GAMBHIR LEAVES TO KKR,DHAWAN,MANAS ALSO LOST....NOW NO SEHWAG........MAN DELHI HIGHLY POPULATES THE TEAM INDIA....BUT CANT FIND A DELHIITE IN DAREDAVILS JERSY

The trick is the team composition. Chennai have players who have played long enuf with each other. So they do understand the situation and deliver accordingly. So it was a good transfer season for them... Delhi -- Look who all uve lost... Gambir, Nannes, Dilshan, AB, Vettori who are all absolute matchwinners in their own right... So its stupid transfer really... And im sure thoug KKR would make it to the semis, i dont think theyll reach the finals for sure. The team is a new one and they've yet to be tested. Under pressure they crumble as they did against CSK. Lets see the game against MI...

CSK better than DD .DD wiil never win this match. because shewag wiinot play today.

  • Indiancampions454 on May 12, 2011, 13:17 GMT

I also think that CSK will win even if sewag was playing, CSK has Three Super King bowlers (Bollinger, Aswin, and Morkel) and don't forget their Bating Lineup, you now what they did to Rajastan, in everyway CSK is better than DD. Also looking forward to the CSK vs. Bangalore Game can't wait to see the CSK bowlers Vs. Gayle

  • Irarum on May 12, 2011, 12:40 GMT

If you are Delhi fan, stop being negative. It is time for others to step up and lets hope that happens. I am from India, and so surprised to see people rubbing off Pathan. Unless he fails in next 150 games, I will continue supporting Pathan. Not just because of his record but the promise. We need people like Irfan at higher levels and become an inspiration for younger generation. We need medium pace bowling all rounders and not spin all rounders who in crunch time are useless. Apart from Irfan, Delhi can still upset if Venu, Finch and Morkel step up.

  • on May 12, 2011, 12:37 GMT

if sehwag had one more consistent batsman and two consistent bowlers DD will win but unfortunately they don't , man they dearly miss AB now!!!

  • sunder_screen on May 12, 2011, 12:17 GMT

There is no doubt that Sehwag is the best batsman in the world. But CSK will roar even if sehwag will play today. The home advantage to CSK cannot be ignorable.

there will be contest and finally dd will be won...........

  • on May 12, 2011, 11:54 GMT

there is a difference btwn sewag n warner. bowler when they see sewag they lose their mind and start bowling wrong length and lines and that wont happen in case of warner and finch. can warner n finch handle spinner like sewag ? we all know the answer so this game should be walk in the park or shall i say in marina beach for csk..

  • on May 12, 2011, 11:44 GMT

Even if there is sehwag CSK will Win

  • Cristopher59 on May 12, 2011, 11:39 GMT

I hope for the sake of India's capital the Delhi Daredevils win.

  • jonesy2 on May 12, 2011, 10:45 GMT

well this is the worst and stupidest preview ive ever read. first off, pathan is far from their premier allrounder, the new skipper is. and of course they can replace sehwag, for god sake. if warner and finch fire then no worries.

    CSK WOBNTHE FINAL OF 2011

  • indianzen on May 12, 2011, 9:44 GMT

CSK will crush DD by 40 runs. CSK will bat first and make 175. DD could only make 135. Jakati, Ashwin and Bollinger will be the deadly trio...

  • indianzen on May 12, 2011, 9:40 GMT

Its really difficult without Sehwag... He is the kith and kin of DD. how would you ride a bike with out the first and second gears...

  • on May 12, 2011, 9:30 GMT

I sympathise with the Delhi Dare Devils. The performance of this team is not at all comparable with other teams. Individual performances can not win the matches. Don't access the performance of Irfan Pathan on the basis of the IPL matches, where the batsman dominated the bowlers. Even then, Irfan Pathan performed reasonably well. He should be selected to the West Indies and England Tours. Even Zaheer did not perform well in some of the IPL matches. don't forget that.

  • sivadubai on May 12, 2011, 9:04 GMT

@shariq - I am not impressed with Sehwag either. But, the difference is I am not referring to his batting, but his dancing skills. Pepsi ad I mean. Man, who on earth would say that he is not impressed with Sehwag's batting. He is the best ever. A match winner, a cool customer (i would rate Viru better than Dhoni in this aspect) and a consistent performer. Sehwag has many more years of cricket in him. He amazes every cricket lover around the Globe and it is his unassuming character that stumps everyone. What a playerSehwag s and how blessed we are to have such a cricketer in our Team. Hail Sehwag. Usually it is the batsmen who fear bowlers, but in the case of sehwag, its the bowlers who fear to bowl at him. He has been a single handed crusader and a match winner on his own.

FYI, i am CSK fanatic. by the way, CSK will win today. Chennai crowd would miss sehwag today for sure.

  • on May 12, 2011, 9:00 GMT

CSK will easily beat DD.Without Sehwag Delhi is a very easy opponent to beat.

  • paringogri on May 12, 2011, 8:41 GMT

    Sehwagless Delhi = Harmless Delhi

    one more equation...

    Delhi - Sehwag = Loss

  • britishcricketfan on May 12, 2011, 8:36 GMT

how delhi could do with a certain unsold tamim iqbal right now!

  • on May 12, 2011, 8:36 GMT

No Never Shewag is the pillar of the delhi so there is no chance to win this game for delhi

  • on May 12, 2011, 7:37 GMT

today csk lwill win.thats for sure

  • on May 12, 2011, 6:58 GMT

@Shariq : Sehwag has strike rate of 163 @ Avg. of 28 in 77 twenty20. He even has strike rate of 82 in test match buddy. What else you need to get impressed.

  • narsinator on May 12, 2011, 6:22 GMT

CSK looks like a really ordinary team on paper, but they produce good results.. really impressive.. Delhi's batting relies heavily on Warner now..

Warne is going home! Warner will go home today!! Next Warnest?? Haha

  • Alexk400 on May 12, 2011, 6:13 GMT

DD will never win any game as long as Irfan pathan is playing. He is negative energy because he got more money than all the players and laid egg. It is better to remove him.

  • Debdutta on May 12, 2011, 5:56 GMT

@shariq.....when u see a player like sehwag perform u are not just impressed but overwhelmed......DD gonna miss him much

  • on May 12, 2011, 5:33 GMT

Krishnan your so right.......but i hope for the sake of the play-offs that doesnt happen!!!!!!!!!!! MI,CSK,RCB n KKR should make the play-offs!!!!!!!!!

  • on May 12, 2011, 4:57 GMT

@Shariq Sehwag never impressed u ?? thats a Joke.. ODI or Test or T20.. what Viru does is the start... the start which will make everyone settle their nerves. like hernandez scored 1st minute goal in recent man united vs chelsea match. and if Sehwag never impressed you then I think no batsman will never can Impress you.

  • coolio78 on May 12, 2011, 4:42 GMT

I have a gut feeling, Delhi's gonna win today. Maybe Hopes can bring some innovative ideas to create a major upset. If Punjab can beat Mumbai, then IPL can have even stranger results!

  • on May 12, 2011, 4:37 GMT

well crazy things have happened before in cricket... this coming from a CSK fan.... fingers crossed.... matches are won with performance not by how the teams look on paper.....

  • cric_freakNo2 on May 12, 2011, 4:34 GMT

waste of flight charges for GMR . it would be better if they give walkover . without sehwag it is impossible for them to win against the might CSK .

  • on May 12, 2011, 4:12 GMT

Ironically DD may win this game and make CSK cry in their home soil. Cricket is a funny game.

  • on May 12, 2011, 1:41 GMT

Noorul let me tell you sewag is not the end of the world, I am from pakistan and one thing for sure sewag never impressed me. On the other hand they have GOOD hitters like dAVID WARNER AND aaron finch.

dELHI HAS TO USE PATHAN WISELY HE IS A GOOD ALL ROUNDER AND SHOULD BAT AT NUMBER 3.

  • on May 11, 2011, 20:55 GMT

Delhi should stay back in Delhi and hand over the points to Chennai. It will be absurd for DD to play against CSK at their den and without who? Sehwag?
