Big Picture

It began with a last-ball thriller, meandered in the middle, and ended with perhaps the most exciting match of the season. The IPL league phase is over, and though there were some spirited contenders, the four teams who looked strongest from the start are the ones that have progressed.

Amid the randomness of the prolonged qualification period Royal Challengers Bangalore have provided some stability. With eight wins in their previous nine games, they are undoubtedly favourites, a concept so vital to most sporting contests, but considered taboo in the IPL. They have earned the tag, and not just through the belligerence of Chris Gayle. S Aravind and Virat Kohli have been consistent, Daniel Vettori has been effective in his unassuming manner, Zaheer Khan has shown glimpses of his abilities and, perhaps, most importantly they've been relatively safe with their catching in a tournament plagued by poor fielding.

They beat Chennai in their last league game and a similar result in the first qualifier on Tuesday will ensure a berth in the final.

Chennai, though, have the opportunity to play some MS Dhoni-endorsed "fearless" cricket, knowing that the lifeline Kolkata's L Balaji and Mumbai's Ambati Rayudu combined to afford them on Sunday night is a sturdy one. Their second chance, should they need it, will be in Chennai, where they won all seven of their games in the group phase.

It will be interesting to see whether they take some risks to derail the Bangalore juggernaut; perhaps throw caution to the wind with the bat, or maybe put in some close fielders for the phenomenal Gayle.

Form guide

Bangalore: WLWWW (first on points table)

Chennai: LWWWL (second on points table)

Team talk

In three matches since Tillakaratne Dilshan's departure, Bangalore tried three different opening partners for Gayle, all without much success. The latest move, to push AB de Villiers up the order, was the boldest, as it clusters Bangalore's three best batsmen at the top, and leaves the middle order looking inexperienced.

If they do stick with de Villiers up the order, Luke Pomersbach is rather wasted as a fourth foreign player. They could replace him with either Asad Pathan or Arun Karthik, and bring in Charl Langeveldt, who took five wickets in the three chances he was given, in place of Abhimanyu Mithun. Vettori also suggested after the previous game that Bangalore may bring in spinner J Syed Mohammad in place of a batsman if the pitch looks like it will turn.

Chennai have not changed their XI in their previous four games, but may consider a couple of moves after the thrashing they were handed in Bangalore. Albie Morkel has not displayed the wicket-taking ability he did in the first half of the tournament, and with Chennai's batting line-up already long enough, Tim Southee is an option.

In the spotlight

S Badrinath has failed in his previous two innings. The last time Chennai played at the Wankhede Stadium, he was sublime during his 71 not out off 48 balls. In last year's semi-final, he was Chennai's top-scorer with 37.

AB de Villiers has had an ordinary second half of the season with the bat, but his talent is unquestionable. He likes being in the thick of the action, so won't mind opening the batting again.

Prime numbers

  • Daniel Vettori is by far the most economical bowler of this IPL season (five overs minimum). His 40 overs have gone at a rate of just 5.40 an over.

  • With five stumpings, MS Dhoni has the most such dismissals among the wicketkeepers in this IPL.

The chatter

"If you get Chris Gayle out and you've got a few [runs on the board], you have a chance; getting him out will be priority, number one."
Stephen Fleming, the Chennai coach, knows who Bangalore's main man is.

@Pranav - What a needless comment that was!You take out 4 batsmen and say without them RCB cant get to 150?Of course they can't!In the same way that CSK cant without Hussey,Badri,Raina and Dhoni!

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 18:47 GMT)

We are the Super Kings .... Mind it....... Lions are all set to roar at its Den for the finals.... We proved that we are the Champions... you ppl cannot write us off in an article like above....

hahaha told you so! the author is not so much backing RCB now is he?

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 14:15 GMT)

CSK or RCB.......both teams are formidable in their own way but in truth RCB is a one man show. The GAYLE FORCE sent them propelling to the top of the table ,where as CSK works as a team. Each player has a role and plays well. Out of the 11 in CSK 9 of them are in top form. For RCB only Gayle has shown the way,and others have supported him.If Gayle, Kholi, deVillers and tiwary are out RCB will have trouble scoring a more than 150.

@gagan_deep you are shouting at the fact that our cricketers aren't playing for the country but are instead..playing the IPL...i wud like to tell u..it's not abt the money at all times...cricket is a fun game and should be played whenever u feel doin so...we won the World Cup grandly...so...why complaining...we are still the NUMERO UNO team!!!!

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 14:04 GMT)

CSK should consider playing Southee instead of Morkel today....he's a better bowler than Morkel any day...and Morkel hasn't found much form with the bat too!!!Southee did well in the 1st leg this IPL and can be an element of surprise for Gayle and Co.!!!

Posted by gagan_deep on (May 24, 2011, 13:57 GMT)

Only Gayle is enough to get rid of enire Team effort of CSK.

Posted by somu1984 on (May 24, 2011, 13:40 GMT)

Previous editions of IPL, Chris Gayle was a failure and he is making it count now. Also he wanted to prove to WICB that he can be a match winner. If we take Chris Gayle out of the RCB equation then I don't think that they could travel this far. It is to be seen if any team that removes Chris Gayle early then what would be the outcome of the match. On the other hand, CSK has lot of potential match winners like MEK Hussey, Suresh Raina, S. Badrinath, M, Vijay in them which is led by our own captain cool MSD. Expecting a close contest though. ALL THE BEST to both the teams.

raghu1122000.......dont tell wrong facts.....csk and rcb won a match each in ipl 1....rcb won 2 and csk 1 in ipl 2....rcb 1 and csk 1 in ipl 3....csk won rcb in champions league ...ipl4 1-1.....total 5-5

@vivekdhayalan_indian_tamilan ha ha ha apply logical sense wen u comment. i meant karnataka players and tamil nadu players. 12 karnataka players who haven't got Indian cap been signed by rest of the IPL teams. This is what groomin talent for major tournaments like IPL. Karnataka has a much better record in Ranji trophy.

Only CSK my favourite team win the second time IPL because indian material is very good in chennai team like Raina, Badri, Murli and Dhoni versus RCB, MI and KKR. So CSK should win the IPL2011

@hard_hitter2, MURALI VIJAY GOT 1 MOM..i think

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 13:22 GMT)

Its a certain opportunity of a pre-calculative captain MSD and with his elegance in leadership the only team that exhibited team performance all through this season is CSK and when the team fails the captain leads from the front..... So its a good opportunity for them to win this match and move to the final right away

Is this circus not over yet? Luckily the real cricket (the stuff that actually requires skill) is back in the WI and England this week.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 13:11 GMT)

How do to you say Gayle is a key for victory. If CSK take others wickets without any Gap He cannot be played as a Gem. He play wrong and handed over his wickets to CSK. Come on CSK we r SuperKings fought like a King for victory

Posted by Nampally on (May 24, 2011, 13:11 GMT)

Only way Chennai can win this match is to get Gayle before he gets into double figures. Chennai do not have Gilchrist & Marsh to set up a huge total as Punjab did in their thrashing of Bangaluru. In that game Gayle was dismissed quickly too. Chennai's batting is neither good nor consistent. Vijay & Badri have failed consistently.Their bowling relies heavily on Jakati & Ashwin. Dhoni should score a century and the bowlers should get Gayle, de Vellier & Kohli out early in order for chenai to win. These do not appear likely. So be prepared for Chennai to take a long route to the final which appears equally unlikely considering Kolkatta & Mumbai's stregth. If Chennai do the impossible, they can beat Bangaluru & advance bur will have to face Bangaluru again in the final. This is the most optimistic assessment.Get Gayle out early & have a chance to win.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 13:10 GMT)

All are talking that RCB on top bcoz of gayle...yeah thats true..He has not given any chance to other rcbians to show their talent..Against punjab its an bad day for RCB... Toady if gayle does not perform also, rcb goin to win bcoz we have good batting attack..

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 13:09 GMT)

T20 not allowing the final result to tie the match or both to win.... as per reconciling both the teams RCB has the best chance to enter the final today...

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 13:04 GMT)

@hard_hitter2

It seems you are sold on CSK. Good reasons. Jakati is no weak link. He is a v. good bowler and has taken good wickets. I remember him taking a fabulous catch at deep mid-wicket.

Posted by eomer17 on (May 24, 2011, 13:04 GMT)

ALSO PPL WHO ARE RAVING BOUT GAYLE ,GAYLE CAN ONLY BAT THE WAY HE DOES BUT HE CAN ALSO FAIL IF THE PITCH OFFERS SOMETHING LIKE IT DID IN DHARAMSALA. ALSO RCB HAS BOWLED WELL AND GAYLE HAS MOSTLY CHASED SMALL TOTALS,SO IN A PRESSURE GAME IF CHENNAI BAT FIRST & BAT WELL,THEN..........

Posted by eomer17 on (May 24, 2011, 12:58 GMT)

CHENNAI HS GOT THE BEST BOWLING ON SLOW TRACKS ,SO ONCE THEY GET GAYLE IT WONT BE MUCH OF A TROUBLE FOR THEM.THE KEY FACTORS ARE HOW CHENNAI BAT & HOW GAYLE BATS.

Posted by meastrostroke on (May 24, 2011, 12:48 GMT)

@@@all the csk haters i wana say something..the man-of the matches in CSK are anirudha, hussey, hussey,DE Bollinger,JA Morkel,MEK Hussey MS Dhoni,WP Saha,

players left are BADRI who already holds most number of 50+ in single IPL,RAINA (only batsmen who crossed 400+ in all editions), Ashwin(Who has impressive econ.rate and genuine spinner assumed to be future of indian cricket) Only weak link in the team i cud see is jakati.. Dhoni knows how to use him.He s a modern era intelligent captain, whereas in the RCB it is Gayle-mania...

To all Chennai Fans:

Bangalore lead the race against chennai 5-4 in head to he clashes and in all those wins, only one match had gayle scoring 70(actually that also ha a certain MS Dhoni playing the sole innings of substance for Chennai)..

So all thie RCB is nothing without Gayle is just not backed by concrete facts. You can screm to ur hearts content, bottom line is RCB won and is going to win.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 12:29 GMT)

well...as an RCB fan i dont mind weather Gayle single handedly wins it or the entire team does as long as RCB wins...but when power hitters like Gayle, Sehwag, Gilly, Yusuf, Dhoni, Robin, Yuvi does it its always a delight to watch and thats what most people like to see happen in IPL..and in case of RCB we desperately needed player like Gayle after loosing Robin is auction n nobody can deny the fact that Gayle Force is d main reason for where RCB is today...Gayle has done it 8 times out of 9 matches he has played so if one goes by law of probability theres every chance of another Gayle storm hitting CSK today... besides i would like to see Mayank Aggarwal open d innings with Gayle...he is a very aggressive young player and on his day he can match Gayle shot to shot...

Posted by karthikthegod on (May 24, 2011, 12:19 GMT)

gayle is the better than pollard in any form of the game he is not only the batsmen in rcb to win a game.there ar lights of virat kohli ,ab devillers, saurab tiwary so rcb has many chances

Posted by nata4u2c on (May 24, 2011, 12:10 GMT)

It is expected to be a tough match and will have to wait and watch who gets to reach the finals first. It will be a test of courage and nerves and whosoever can control nerves better team will win the contest. since i am Bangalorian , i wish RCB to win the match today.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 12:09 GMT)

Bangalore will win once i say so they will .... go Bangalore all the way...winners

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 12:06 GMT)

there are 2 kinds of team in IPL this season , one is CSK and the other is OTHERS... :) Go CSK - you are born to win.. :)

Posted by gagan_deep on (May 24, 2011, 11:52 GMT)

IPL IPL IPL , I hate this IPL.Our international cricketers prefers IPL instead of international tour including the great Sachin.......just because of money..it proves that all r playing for money.Playing for Country is second priority for them........not a single international player gone to take rest during IPL which is just after WC.But they r taking rest after IPL.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 11:45 GMT)

Many anti-csk's here r somehow trying to disprove csk is team effort just to defend RCB's weakness of single man domination in their batting (though their bowling is decent) but the fun part is one is saying bollinger did it, another is saying dhoni, third one is saying it was hussey who did it, by saying that they r mentioning most of the csk key players which in itself shows CSK is a team effort and most of their key players performed well in crucial situations. hope they do it again

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 11:35 GMT)

Gooooooooood Luck CSK, come to top of the table again

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 11:32 GMT)

guys, i have taken gayle in my fantasy team...so he is bound to fail (its a trend in this IPL....any batsman i take fails..:( )...and with clever captain like dhoni....CSK is all fav to win today.....

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 11:30 GMT)

What's with all the Chennai fans and Caps lock? Symptomatic methinks- One man, two men, three men whatever, there's a single game to play and if he does well in that, which he should given his form, that is all that counts. On a related note I find all this Bangalore is Gayle team funny. We've beaten chennai thrice before this season without Gayle, so it's idiotic to keep commenting on that.

Posted by harshacc on (May 24, 2011, 11:30 GMT)

@Farce-Follower .These matches are held at Chennai and Mumbai because they were the finalists last year.If RCB and KKR were to be the finalists this year next years semis and finals would be held there

MSD is as innovative that he may even field one of his boys on the air to take the wicket of Chris Gayle..

Just remember on where did Haddos took the catch for Pollard in 2010 Finals ? Pollard never came into form after that !!!!

MSD is a true leader who can make the entire CSK team to play like CG.. so it means the contest is between 1 Gayle and 11 Gayles...

I am a MI fan but i think csk are favourites to win IPL . coming to todays match SOMESAID THAT CSK IS A ONE MAN TEAM NO THE WHOLE TEAM HAS COnTRIBUTED BUT RCB IS A ONE MAN TEAM CHRiS GAYLE WHEN HE WAS NOT THERE THEY WERE LOSING EVERYTHING AND WHEN HE DINT FIRE IN ONE MATCH RCB LOST BY 110 runs and he cant play quality spinners he was just defending ashwin there it worked coz target was low but csk batting wont fail again and wankhede pitch is turning to

Posted by NeydorffDM on (May 24, 2011, 10:54 GMT)

All the best to MSD and the boys

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 10:47 GMT)

MS Dhoni is the best captain at this time. CSK has very strong batting line. But RCB has only one man show CG.If he flops there is not any other than Birat, the problem with him is very middle order batting.Vittori is very good in his captancy, but he himself is not enough. This match and IPL 4 is made for Dhoni. DHO DALO DHONI, YOU ARE THE BEST.

Posted by HellCatstar on (May 24, 2011, 10:45 GMT)

For all those who say RCB's victory march was just because of Chris Gayle the same story implies for CSK as well. In season 3 the addition of Doug Bollinger lead to the title. 1st 2 seasons der was no bollinger but he single handedly won the game for the title in season 3. Remember, T20 is a game of 1 man impact.

Posted by psychicsaint on (May 24, 2011, 10:45 GMT)

csk has posted a stable lineup for quite a long time now but rcb is still experimenting their batting order right from top (and it failed miserably even in the last game with abd out for a duck)... what does that show? lack of confidence!!

Posted by psychicsaint on (May 24, 2011, 10:40 GMT)

the results of last two league games will be reversed in the next two... csk->final, kkr vs rcb q2, csk vs kkr final.. the final is anybody's game because kkr and csk are the most balanced teams in ipl4 and also the most deserving ones to meet in the final... the team that plays best on the day will eventually win but i'll put my money on csk since they haven't lost a single game in chennai...

How u tag a team which entered IPL knock out stage four times, as a over hyped team ?? CSK are the champions of IPL 3.0 and CL. We never ended bottom of the team in any IPL. RCB can be tagged as a over hyped team ..

regarding this article, it is solely written on the basis of last match between CSK and RCB.

With the current CSK track record, they might loose this game.. but they are going to win the cup, by taking the well known path and going to set a record of all home wins.

Posted by Valavan on (May 24, 2011, 10:18 GMT)

CSK wants gayle to struggle against spin. gayle can easily conquer any spinners unless they are clever to handle him. he was quite for ashwin in the first over to get the eye in, then he will with ease control any bowling. Gayle will do it for RCB and Vettori will guide to IPL 2011 final

Posted by HellCatstar on (May 24, 2011, 10:16 GMT)

@Karthik Thirunavukkarasu Panangondar: Dude u forgot the fact that Daniel Vettori has the best economy rate in this IPL. He is the breakthrough bowler of this season. We hav got talents to unleash in different conditions. CSK is rotating players for the past 4 seasons and it is the same names doing rounds for the past 4 years. comment after seeing the stats. CSK hardly groomed any talent. BWL

CSK should bring FAF. He will be a very big boost in batting and also in fiekding......

Albie and bravo out. FaF and southee in.... the above will boost the CSK line up...

@Farce-Follower - I am not sure whether you are well informed, as per the IPL framework, previous year winners home ground will be chosen for the final venue for the current edition. Due to political unrest in 2010 in Andhra HYD lost the status. Unfortunately 2009 event shifted to SA.

Why everyone forgetting Laxmi Balaji, who has returned the favor to Chennai and gave them a seconf chance if they loose to RCB. So Chennai fans do not disappoint if Chennai can't win first match; they will win second for sure

I think if all speak here about dhoni as a captain, dont forget vettori is equally good captain who can use his resources very well. RCB lost a game when Vettori was away, now when he is back again RCB does it better. CSK has Bollinger, Dhoni,Hussey,Badrinath and Ashwin as crucial ones. while RCB has Gayle, Kohli, vettori, zaheer and AB as crucial. But CSK shouldnt forget Luke Pomersbach is the best T20 player in Australia alongside Brad hodge and Cameroon white. Match is equal and CSK is just about jealous and feels heat on GAYLES CONQUERING FORCE

CSK 2011 need to win this for some credibility. Just 2 out of 7 (just 28%) wins in away games is a very poor performance this year; can't keep resting on the laurels of 2010. Should be a good game though... expecting CSK to improve over their last meeting. The situation reminds me of the WC S/F in 1996 - everyone in India was really worried about Jayasuriya & Kalu; and were in raptures when they fell in the 1st over. Only to see Aravinda (backed up by Ranatunga and Mahanama) to win the day. So beware of DeVilliers and Kohli too.

@Karthik.Cricfan " In a spin friendly track in mumbai we hav young syed mohammed. he will play the game instead of A mithun. His economy rate is par better than jakati or raina or any other spinners in the csk team." ////

Dude you carefully ignored R Ashwin from CSK's spinner list, playing two matches and sitting in dugout and you are blowing that he got the best economy rate ??? wat u say about ashwin who played 14 matched and has got 5.50 Econ ?? ROTFL

Posted by gracegift on (May 24, 2011, 7:58 GMT)

1.Rossouw and 2.Gayle to open, 3.Kohli, 4.DeVilliers,5.Tiwary, 6.Pathan in the middle order, 7.Vettori, 8.Zaheer, 9.Mithun, 10.Syed mohammed and 11.Aravind as the 5 specialist bowlers. RCB can risk Rossouw as the surprise package since Gayle and Virat are in good touch, with DeVilliers and Tiwary to follow. Mithun seems to be falling over a bit, hence the leg side bowling. I will ask him to go flat out fast.

Posted by KANCHANA623 on (May 24, 2011, 7:58 GMT)

This will be a one sided game. RCB will definitely win this game without any trouble at all. CSK arenot competative enough to give good fight to RCB.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 7:57 GMT)

If one man shows were so successful, why did Chennai lose despite Dhoni's heroic one man show the other day? That's maybe because you need others to play too. Do concentrate on Gayle, I have a feeling this is only going to work to Bangalore's advantage, allowing the others play they want.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 7:50 GMT)

It doesn't matter how a victory comes, as long as it comes. It is even better if it is a team effort. Just for everyones info Out of 9 matches RCB has played head to head against Chennai, bangalore have won 5 and chennai 4. So RCB have the edge here.

Csk Can handle any situation wen there s a man Like MSD... He rocks... the only team to feature in all the semis of the DLF IPL and the only IPL team to lift the IPL Trophy and the Champions League Trophy in the Same year... Csk s the most consistent T20 team in the World ... Proud to be a Csk fan.... :)

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 7:37 GMT)

As a normal cricket fan, I am really tired of this IPL drama, really. Just go and see Pakistan vs West Indies series. They may not be good teams which they were, still that test series is more entertaining than this IPL. I dont know why this T20 series is getting so much popular? T20 cricket is donkey cricket.

Posted by TRAM on (May 24, 2011, 7:35 GMT)

Gayle would play confidently only if the asking rate is within reasonable reach. If he bats second and rrr=9/10 he would start playing very slowly and get out.

@Abhijeet Singh

"Dhoni bhaiya is the best. he will not let CSk lose against tHe RCB"

Yeah which is why Bangalore have five wins against Chennai.

Posted by mksreeram on (May 24, 2011, 7:29 GMT)

@Narasimha Murthy - Don't comment without knowing facts. Please look at RCB before commenting that CSK is single player dependent team. For RCB out of the 9 wins, 8 victories came after Gayle came to the team and in this 8 he was MoM for 5 (one of the match he scored 70 of 44 and Aravind got MoM for his 3 wickets at a Econ of 8.5), Kholi 2 times. Gayle has scored 511 out of total 1356 scored by RCB in the matches he played (38%). Now do you really want to know the sum of scores minus Dhoni in CSK. Here it is. Out of 2118 runs (Hussey-429-20%, Badri-362-17%, Raina-357-17%, Dhoni-341-16%, Vijay-334-16%). Don't you see all top order played rather 1 or 2 players.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 7:26 GMT)

Gayle hits a century chasing 202 against KKR in finals and wins it for RCB...Sharukh begs Malliya to return Gayle to KKR...Nice dreams...It will never happen because either RCB and KKR will be finalist as CSK is going to be the winner.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

I know Dhoni is a regular Cricinfo Reader.. Hopefully he reads this too..If at all he does not read this before today's match, i hope he will read it before finals since I feel that RCB and CSK will meet once again in Final too.. Gayle needs to taken out or to be e kept quiet for CSK's win.. Spin needs to be operated at one end all the time..Apart from Ashwin, Randiv needs to be in the XI to ensure that the ball goes away from Gayle and Jakati can also bowl to Gayle's leg to frustrate him further... Bollinger & Albie/ Southee need to bowl need to bowl widish full balls on the off side as much as possible to frustrate him further (There can be some sixes to third man, but remember it is still not middled from Gayle's bat).

Posted by harryrockz on (May 24, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

All said and done, its just 2 things that CSK needs to do. Win the toss, bat first and put on a good score. Then get Gayle out early. Even if he does a little damage early on, we (CSK) can win once we get his wicket. And talking about Kohli and AB, I accept that they are good players, but pressure of a big match will show the way. Last match there was no pressure bcoz it was a LEAGUE game. But now it is a knock-out. And if RCB loses here, they will get a second chance. But the loss will hurt. That's pressure. My playing XI for CSK (batting order): 1. M.Vijay, 2.A.Srikkanth, 3.S.Raina, 4.M.Hussey, 5.S.Badrinath 6.M.S.Dhoni, 7. A.Morkel, 8.R.Ashwin, 9.S.Jakati, 10.T.Southee and 11.D.Bollinger. This is the team to beat. The reason i picked up Srikkanth and opening with him is that he can hit the ball well and even if he gets 20-25 runs, they come faster. Dhoni is doing the wrong thing with opening the batting with Hussey. So pressure on M.Vijay. Hussey takes time to settle down. Go CSK Go

I wish both teams best of luck for today, give us a fight to talk about even IPL is finished! Don't be intimidated by the second chance!

new wankhede stadium pitch looks like a spin heavy pitch..we saw how mumbai struggled against deccan chargers and rajasthan royals.. gayle or dhoni or kohli or raina is not going to make a difference today.. its going to be Vettori or Ashwin who can make a difference...and Raina has a great capability of performing well in knockout matches..i am sure he is going to bowl his off spinners in today;s match which will make a difference..if RCB goes only with Vettori in the spin department, they are going to leak out more runs than csk who will go with at least 2 full time and 1 part time spinner.

Somebody Says CSK without Dhoni 1/2, Hahahaha Do you who won the most of matches for CSK? it is Hussey first, Badri, Raina and vijay, aswin and Morkel. and another fact is that Whenever CSK wins against RCB, RCB Wins Next..if RCB won first match Next match won CSK..GO and check all IPL matches between CSK and RCB...RCB Won Semifinal against CSK in 2009, So this Time CSK...

Posted by BULTY on (May 24, 2011, 5:31 GMT)

I know there are very many people who will root for CSK and their cool captain MSD. But there were times in IPL4 when MSD has lost his cool & his temper. On the other hand RCB's progress to Play Off round is one of fairy tale like stories. After winning the first game, they lost 3 on the trot before Gayle joined them and showed them the winning ways. All the talk of others doing well in the batting, bowling & fielding departments are all in the aftermath of Gayle's fine showing. It is an interesting tussle between Vettori's miserliness & Dhoni's hard hitting ways. Who's going to win this is anybody's guess. CSK will want to avenge the defeat in their last league match to RCB and RCB will want to keep the confidence as well as the winning ways for a good show in the finals. All the very best to both the teams. May the best team win. My choice will however be with RCB.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 5:25 GMT)

For all the people that think CSK is going to be subdued tamely again well sorry to disappoint you not gonna happen...In the previous game one should concede that they were outplayed but not out classed. It all had to do with the temperament of the CSK batsmen on a sticky pitch where only players of the caliber of Dhoni and Gayle can score easily .Except for good deliveries that took out Hussey and Bravo the remaining wickets all fell of below mediocre deliveries and the batsmen throwing their wickets away.CSK top order does not fail twice in a row they will fire.however it is completely a different story for RCB we all got to see how good their middle order is with punjab.

Posted by AjitNarayan on (May 24, 2011, 5:18 GMT)

@raghu1122000.. hahaha, that's the silliest thing I've heard. Even if Dhoni scored 100 and no-one did anything else CSK would have still lost. Don't forget Badri's and Raina's efforts...You must be a hardcore fan of Tendulkar's.

If Chris Gayle scores, B'lore win. If not, chennai win. However, Chris will score the next match..so, it might well be B'lore vs Chennai in final again with Chris firing & B'lore winning this season of IPL.

Thats my prediction (Inspired by Harold Camping) :p

hi everybody... Randiv is not here.. he is in England 4 playing his country... anyhow we have some valuable spinners to be replaced.. if u look RCB.. Gayle is the man is playing consistency... if we get gayle out then RCB ll be gone :)

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 5:06 GMT)

CSK is not really so dependent on Dhoni'sbatting but maybe his leadership. But then, it doesnt mean that CSK will fall with dhoni's early wicket. As far as CSK is concerned, someone or the other gets going in every match. Last match it was dhoni. Dosnt mean it was dependent on dhoni. And RCB on the other hand, even though the bowlers have done well, they have struggled to get these small targets as against KKR and CSK. Real credit to the bowlers of RCB, but the thing is there is not enough power in RCB and if Gayles falls early, They have no chance of chasing big targets

Stephen Fleming has accepted the fact that Gayle is very important for Bangalore. He's not feeling the heat, this is a champion team. When champion team loses, it bounces back. And CSK is very graciously accepting the fact that Chris Gayle is a great player and we need to get him out. Get over it! Who ever wins, will win.

To all the RCB fans who are saying CSK/Fleming is feeling the heat n stuff, please! Thats lame! Its a good match, pressure match for both teams. May the best team win.

Posted by sircha on (May 24, 2011, 4:16 GMT)

Everyone's talking about CSK's poor performance in away games. It is interesting to note that in those games they were playing against a host team. Today's game is at a neutral venue. It would be nice if Randiv is picked today. Gayle struggled against Ashwin the other day. I don't think Gayle stands a chance against the quality of Ashwin and Randiv unless of course he decides to play them quietly and go after the quicker bowlers. There is no doubt about CSK being the more balanced side. They have faced more pressure situations than RCB. Hoping for a monster of an innings from Suresh Raina who can easily do for CSK what Gayle has been doing for RCB this IPL.

Posted by kingcobra85 on (May 24, 2011, 4:13 GMT)

Mike Hussey is going to be the star tonight write this down! Its not going to be gayle or dhoni...Its going to be Hussey repeating his world T20 semifinal innings! For his company it would be suresh raina having one of his cute little cameos! Even if Gayle fires all guns its going to be CSK!

They know to win when it matters they have the players who have performed under pressure! they have a captain who terms pressure as "responsibility"....Really the CSK team management would be thinking how they can get their A game out rather than how to get Gayle out! If CSK perform to its potential its going to be Lions who is going to out leg the gayle storm

Posted by A.S.Prasanna on (May 24, 2011, 4:05 GMT)

CSK have already seen Pathan, Pollard, Gilly and so… Now Gayle.. CSK will stick to its norms and easily will this match. CSK is the only team to reach semi's in all the IPL matches.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 3:37 GMT)

CSK fans can't take the fact they were beaten quite comprehensively by RCB and ence making all excuses...can you guys please give me the sum of CSK score minus Dhoni's? Remember 2010 IPL when Dhoni was out for a week due to injury, CSK couldn;t win the easiest of the matches...CSK without Dhoni is as good as 1/2 CSK.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 3:29 GMT)

No doubt, Gayle has played a huge role in RCB's success this year. But, it would be foolish to forget some great contrbutions from the other players...1)Aravind-16 wickets and great economy rate. 2) Vettori-hardly given anything and provided crucial breakthroughs 3)Kohli, AB- Each have a MOM and has provided some great contribtions 4) RCB fielding has been 2nd to none. 5) Zaheer, Langeveldt-Has been bowling really well. 6) There were atleast 3 matches in which CB opposition bowled out cheaply (vs RR, KXIP, Kochi, KKR, Chennai), which doesn't reflect Gayle's involvement.

So, stop singing "no Gayle, no RCB song" and check some facts below as well: 1)I bet CSK will NOT be in top 4 without Dhoni and his leadership (Recall 2010 when he was out for a week and CSK couldn;t win the easiest of the matches against punjab 2) Mumbai without Malinga is pedestrian. Look what's happened in the last few matches when he didn't bowl well 3) Delhi without Viru

Posted by psychicsaint on (May 24, 2011, 3:22 GMT)

all of you may talk about this however long you want... but msd is a winning captain and he will not let his team go down as losers so easily... he has proved that time and again and he will prove it one more time... if not for gayle, csk would have successfully defended the 128 (rcb took 18 overs to get that score despite gayle's heroics) bangalore will hope and pray that gayle fires one more time and all of csk's batsmen fail so that they can make it to the final.. and that i believe is too much of hope!

Chennai's Local talent is far better when compared with RCB.they heavily rely on the foreign players....

Posted by Ajayvs on (May 24, 2011, 2:47 GMT)

@Swaminathan Krishnamoorthy,If un-earthing new talent is a criteria,CSK has failed miserably on that front. It has not un-earthed any new talent in last four years apart from maybe Ashwin.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 2:41 GMT)

CSK should open bowling with Ashwin & Randiv to counteract Gayle with carrom ball/doosra. Hussey, Bollinger & Bravo should be the other overseas players. Yo Mahesh for Jakati could also be considered.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 1:37 GMT)

If there is one man who has a gud chance of getting gayle out cheaply, then its ashwin.... I was impressed with how gayle completely misjudged ashwin's bowling... ashwin can clearly be the big obstacle to big scoring batsmen like gayle and pathan...

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 1:32 GMT)

Knowing RCB, they wudnt change their batting order.... The way gayle was frustrated by ashwin's spin puts his wicket on a countdown.... hussey doesnt strike out more than twice in a row usually... vijay can fire off given the rite support... raina, badri and saha all lend solidarity to the middle order.... IMO, albie should be rested in favour of Faf and Jakati should pave way for Yo Mahesh.... this would maintain the spin-pace ratio while giving a new batsman in Faf....

Posted by   on (May 24, 2011, 1:31 GMT)

I have been following cricket for more than 60 years and I am surprised that people are taking very seriously these games. Any one can win this game and Chris Gayle is hailed as a hero and people think he is the best ignoring Villiers Kohli and others including their versatile Captain. If Dohni bats higher up Supported by Vijay ,badri , RRrrr they could be winners. The toss and luck aso plays an important part.

CSK quality down the spine, RCB more Gayle-centric. CSK will play Hussey, Bollinger, Southee and Randiv; Murali, Dhoni, Raina, Badri, WP Saha, R Ashwin, Jakati. RCB: Gayle, ABD, Vettori, Langevelt; Pathan, Kohli, Tiwary, Kaif, Zak, Arvind, Syyad. Toss-bat. CSK has the edge in Chennai. They need to take out Gayle early and Ashwin and Bollinger will have the task. Only if Gayle fires RCB win.

RCB and MI look to be playing with their muscle power. As a team I firmly believe both teams are not good to handle crisis....RCB Chris Gayle, MI with Tendulkar, Pollard and Malinga....Going by law of averages Gaye is due for a failure.....Tendulkar has been in consistent in IPL 2011( By his standard of course, anytime the best cricketer the game has ever produced) Pollard we have seen him succumb to pressure and of course Watson did show how to hit Malinga..... On the contrary look at CSK and KKR....Please pick up the player who has outplayed other members of the team....you cant pick one...well 4 bastmen more than 300 runs and 3 bowlers over 12 wickets...pick one other team with this spread other than CSK...you propably will not find one. So is the spread with KKR. IPL supposedly a platform for unknown talent to lock horns with pros of the game has ended up being performance of pros w.r.t MI and RCB...... KKR or CSK definitely deserves the cup

Gayle would play confidently only if the asking rate is within reasonable reach. If he bats second and rrr=9/10 he would start playing very slowly and get out.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 22:59 GMT)

I have no doubt, CSK all the way!!!!

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 22:00 GMT)

I am a WIndian and I realise that in the IPL CG is in the form of his life. I dont have much time to see the IPL because its on when I'm at work I probably shouldnt be giving out CG secrets but one of the ways u can get him out is with the fast bowling but with a couple of slips:one probably 2. He normally murders the spinners. He muscles those HUGE hits but there are always a couple of edges mixed with those massive blows through the slip cordon agaainst the faster bowlers. Those guys riding the boundary are normally useless, most times just watching the hits go for 6. Of course crappy fast bowling will be put away just the same. Unorthordox(action) bowlers also get him out frequently. Good luck getting him out.

dont understand the frustration of CSK fans. RCB wins cos Gayle, they are nothing without Gayle..so what!!Bottom line is RCB won and whichever team plays better cricket overall will win..RCB won not just cos of Gayle but cos they restricted chennai to 128 and bowled well. @Senthil Sivam... Can you remember what would happen if you take out that 70 from MS Dhoni in last game. The score of CSK would be an embarassment. and yes, its on the same pitch which favours batsman.. Also remember CSK went to semis last year only cos MS Dhoni played an unbelievable innings against Punjab at Dharamsala. So in a way they are nothing without Dhoni... So get a neutral perspective..

Posted by Avi56 on (May 23, 2011, 21:39 GMT)

hey this RCB one man show is getting too much even after many ppl spoke sense and actually right that the bowling has been the most economical on many occassion...the bowlers do a collective effort to restrict teams...Vettori,Zaheer and Aravind together save runs for the team.... Its not Just one Malinga,or One Mishra, Or One Abdulla or One Rahul Sharma.....its a triple threat.....okie if Gayle is the reason RCB is winnig...then it just goes to show one thing...JUST ONE PERSON IS ENOUGH TO DEFEAT CSK....that shows how mighty the team is.....

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 21:36 GMT)

@Raghu and the same team needed 18 overs to finish of a the chase.....on the same or to say a more batting friendly wicket.....

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 21:12 GMT)

Best RCB lineup 1 Gayle 2 AUK Pathan 3 Kohli 4 Devilliers 5 Mohammed Kaif 6 Tiwary 7 Vettori 8 Zaheer Khan 9 Aravind 10 Langaveldt 11 J Syed Mohammed

CSK have the surprise package for RCB reserved for the finals. They wont expose it now... So, CSK will lose against RCB in the Qualifier match tomorrow, they will win in the eliminator match and then win RCB in the finals. :-)

Posted by kunal18 on (May 23, 2011, 21:00 GMT)

CSK have done it 4 outta 4 times. whole team plays well, every member contributes to the win, dhoni leads from the front and he has shown again in this ipl in games against RR, RCB, Kochi. and RCB depends on gayle force to win, in most of the matches. however kohli and AB hav performed well. gayle needs to be taken out cheaply if CSK has to win. ashwin, bollinger has to think it out. i'd like to see southee getting a game, morkel needs to b rested now. and anirudhra can be played against saha, he is a better bet. a lot will depend upon hussey and vijay, if they' ll score quickly which they are not doing sonsistly in dis ipl, CSK will outshine RCB. RCB bowlers wil also hav a great impact. arvind, zak, vettori will be hard to play. who so ever wins the toss, bat first, put runs on the board and go for the wickets, of stump line and sharp fielding will do it for you. may the best team win.

Posted by sanzo5 on (May 23, 2011, 20:59 GMT)

never underestimate dhoni's brain in knockout games.... he is tricky... i still believe its gonna be a CSK Vs MI final

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 20:54 GMT)

RCB should send Chris Gayle 1-Down and open with Luke and Saurabh Tiwary. That could catch CSK by surprise and also offset Ashwin's plans on Gayle :)

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 20:08 GMT)

Gayle is part of RCB team, if any CSK fan or other guy is complaining that RCB is winning because of Gayle then we guys will take it, just like the entire India does when India wins because of the God and Lakers win because of Kobe Bryant! All the best RCB...keep the kingfisher flying high! And remember...winners never complain!

Posted by kunal18 on (May 23, 2011, 20:04 GMT)

RCB is one man army at the moment right now. u see d game against punjab, when gayle was out for a duck, RCB just managed 121 and lost by 111 runs. PK did the right thing by delivering a maiden, and that proved right. gayle was caught in d next over. however kohli and AB hav shown in d past too, and in dis season too they have batted in a +manner. kohli is pretty impressive wid his strike rotating abilities. if CSK take out gayle early, pressure will be on kohli and AB, and if they fall. RCB will stutter. I'd like to see southee getin a game, im impressed wid morkel, bt now, he needs a break. or du plessis can be played as well. and take out saha, bring in anirudhra he desrves a cap. RCB hav it in their boling, they can contain CSK easily. vettori will lead by an example. for an opener RCB can try vandiar, but in a big match, decision may backfire. so pomersbach shud be used.

Posted by LALITHKURUWITA on (May 23, 2011, 20:01 GMT)

RC will win. The difference is Gayle & Vettori.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 19:59 GMT)

Till date for RCB it was one man show, but the whole team contributes for CSK.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 19:59 GMT)

C'mon!Chris Gayle has got most of his runs chasing! Its the bowlers who have done their job by restricting the opposite team and letting Gayle play his natural game without worrying about the consequences!Plus Virat kohli has been phenomenal(no.4 on the top run getters list).Aravind has been the surprise package and Vettori has been his usual miserly self.Admitted CSK is a wonderfully balanced side, but on potential and form,Bangalore are favorites.

Posted by Valavan on (May 23, 2011, 19:37 GMT)

I feel CSK fans feeling the heat coz gayle was due facing CSK and mumbai, and for chennai fans, they witnessed what gayle can do for CSK in the last game. lady luck will favor the brave, as fortune favors brave and lot of CSK fans just jealous on gayle's uncompromising power, especially this IPL. Stephen Fleming already knew who can just win it without fuss for RCB is GAYLE.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 19:16 GMT)

if gayle makes 30+ then its bangalores game other wise bangalore have no chance at all....

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 19:14 GMT)

Can anyone remember how much Gayle scored against Punjab??? Zero & RCB 121/10. RCB wins When Gayle Scores,RCB losses When Gayle gets out cheaply....The whole team mentally depend on Gayle force. Not to forget the Strong Bowling attack of CSK.Gayle & RCB needed 18 overs to get 128 runs against CSK...even in Bangalore Pitch itself. So Imagine...Mumbai is another favourite pitch for CSK.Anyway RCB ,,,All the Best & Try your Luck.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 18:54 GMT)

Is one thrashing not enough for CSK. Already MSD and Co are having nightmares of Chris Gayle. Will the entire CSK team show up for the 1st Qualifier, leave alone putting close-in fielders for Gayle. Was the last match the end of MSD's glorious victory feat? God save CSK tomorrow.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 18:50 GMT)

This situation is very basic; if Gayle fires, it is all over. If he gets out, Bangalore will have a very hard time winning.

Posted by raghu1122000 on (May 23, 2011, 18:15 GMT)

@Vimal Raj..

It was not Chris Gayle that restricted chennai to 128 but the bowlers(Arvind, Zaheer, Vettori ).. and they did that on one of the most batting friendly wickets in India.

Even without Chris Gayle, how many do really think bangalore batting cannot achieve 128..

On the contrary, take out the 70 from M S Dhoni and chennai folded up below 60 runs..

So get some perspective

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 18:12 GMT)

Whoever seizes the opportunity on the day will win... i wud like to see Morkel come in 1 down and maybe push raina further down.... he can b d finisher .... Hussey and Vijay have been remarkably slow during the first 6...CSK needs firepower early on in the innings to give them a jumpstart....

Posted by Avi56 on (May 23, 2011, 18:11 GMT)

Mr. Vimal Raj....if RCB is a one man army...why did Chennai Score 128 in their First innings...And gayle is an opener and he is performing what every opener has to do...and which other team have failed to do...and mind you Virat Kohli has been equally responsible for Bangalore Victories backing the upper order... And the following matches vs Chennai, Kochi, KKR (in Bangalore) and Rajasthan...it was the bowlers who won the match actually...cause they could restrict those teams to a low total...and Gayle could hit back at par....

Bangalore Has one most of its matches by 7 wickets 8 wickets...which goes to show that the upper order is doing the job....

@wisdon350 - it must be boring for u but not for us

Posted by suhridb on (May 23, 2011, 17:55 GMT)

"Daniel Vettori is "by far" the most economical bowler of this IPL season." --> Rahul Sharma has an economy rate of 5.46 which is a difference of only 2.4 runs for the same number of overs (40). He is very very close. A couple of big hits by Dhoni and Rahul Sharma will be the most economical bowler of this IPL!

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 17:47 GMT)

Without Chris Gayle blore looks nothing...

Posted by 9ST9 on (May 23, 2011, 17:27 GMT)

Go Gayle - hope the form continues in july when you play in the Sri Lankan league

Posted by wisdom350 on (May 23, 2011, 17:23 GMT)

Still need pakistani players otherwise it is boring...........................................

Posted by chakaralap on (May 23, 2011, 17:22 GMT)

It would be battle of south indian teams.Always south teams reached the finals.Hope that B'lore eins this time.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 17:17 GMT)

L.Balaji still plays for CSK .... hahaha..... KKR beware of Balaji .... RCB Rocks

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 17:11 GMT)

playing bravo is stupidity...dhoni needs to change...his team a bit...morkel is the only all-rounder we need...raina can easily pull off some overs....Faf du Plessis..should be considered. Rest is fine. Even if they lose...the second chance is at home...where they have proven themselves the Manchester United of IPL.

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 17:08 GMT)

ha ha...luks like Stephen Fleming's already feeling the heat!!!!:)

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 17:05 GMT)

Bangalore my team to win the ipl,,,gayle is the man who will make it happen,,,he know that he had do the hard work to be at this stage now its time to finish the job in a fine fashion,,i strongly believe he going to score 2 half century before the ipl complete,,who know a 100 in mind ,,good luck Gayle and Bangalore

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 16:52 GMT)

There is no doubt in it, CSK is the first finalist, becoz Bangalore's (specially for Gayle)- Lady luck wont follow in all the games....

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 16:27 GMT)

I woudnt say bangalore are clear favourites. Its at a neutral venue and CSK usually reserve their best for the last.

Posted by ibbani on (May 23, 2011, 16:24 GMT)

RCB - pls keep the good run going. make it this time by winning the IPL, do not make any fuss as you did in the IPL 2009 when you lost to Deccan. :(

Posted by   on (May 23, 2011, 16:19 GMT)

Chris Gayle ! The only hurdle for all teams in the IPL....................
