Indian Premier League, 1st match: Chennai Super Kings v Kolkata Knight Riders at Chennai, Apr 8, 2011
Chennai Super Kings won by 2 runs
8 April 2011 - night match (20-over match)

Right, Doctrove asks everyone, and says "Chennai Vanakkam, neenga ready-a", for the first time, ever, in a Caribbean accent! Iqbal Abdulla to open open the attack. Slip in place.

Saran: "CSK's batting looks weeker this time by the loss of haydo & hussey. Use Albie up in the order. They could have used du plessis & Yo mahesh in place of Anirudh & Southee."

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan is back on air. Did you guys miss him at the World Cup? The umpires march out - Doctrove and Reiffel. The Ganguly-less Kolkata marches out. I wonder how the Eden Gardens is going to react to this team. M Vijay and S Anirudha are marching out to open. Local flavour at the top. I am Nitin Sundar, taking you through the action today. Sanjay Murari is scoring the game for us.

We should be ready to start in a while. Meanwhile, for people who like to follow cricket on the move, here are our mobile phone apps.

Kirti: "Don't distort my name by calling me Kriti instead of Kirti. If i distort your name, you might become Ntini." Point noted. Correction made.

R Ashwin: "Our team is almost the same from last year, and even the support staff is the same, which is great. The new guys coming in are fitting in very well. The crowd seems a little sleepy right now, hope they wake up and support us. Nalla whistle pondunga pa!"

We are still awaiting the XIs. We will have them up once they announce on air. Now we have them. Morgan and Kallis are the overseas players for KKR. Their bowling is entirely made up of Indian domestic players. Chennai look far better balanced.

Gambhir says he would have chased anyway. Only two overseas players in the KKR side today. Lee, Haddin and Shakib are away in Bangladesh, so they aren't playing. Two seamers and three spinners in their XI.

Toss This time Shastri and the match referee hear the call the first time. Dhoni wins and Chennai will bat. "The wicket will slow a bit as we go on, and the pitch will offer spin."We did not have time to gel up really well as a team, but the players have been nice and calm." Styris, Randiv, Southee and Morkel are playing today. Bravo is away, Bollinger is reportedly injured, and Hussey is in Bangladesh.

Dhoni, or Captain Fantastic if you are Ravi Sharstri, speaks before the toss: "Good to be back to franchise cricket .. Last 2 days we have been practicing, meeting clients and doing endorsements. Still we tried to get some rhythm going."

Gambhir: "The World Cup is history, this is a new game now. The team is really hungry and we want to start on a good note."

Kirti: "I can't believe I am going through the pain of sitting at home on a friday evening in front of youtube on my laptop just to watch Sunidhi Chauhan lipsync. Its an embarassment. This is a cricket tournament for crying out loud! or atleast calls itself one."

Well Kirti, to be fair to Sunidhi, I think she wasn't lip-syncing after all. Not that that redeems this ceremony. This is a cricket tournament indeed, and in half an hour or so, we will have some cricket to watch.

1930 IST The toss is round the corner. Just enough time for you to play God and select your XIs for today. Click here. Meanwhile fireworks go off, the opening ceremony is closing, and we might actually have some cricket today.

"Chennai, ellam seriya irukka?," lip-syncs Shahrukh in Tamil. The voice playing in the background is not even his. Hmm. Now Shriya joins him in dancing for "Appadi Podu", an evergreen Tamil hit, whose lyrics mean nothing. Roughly translated: "Put like that, put put put, put like that with your eye. Put like this, put, put, put, put like this in the back." More Tamil songs being performed, the crowd is perking up now.

1923 IST Shahrukh Khan will perform next, accompanied by Shriya Saran. The former is introduced as the greatest entertainer of the world. Shahrukh's dressed in black, and wearing dark shades. I'll never understand why you need to wear dark shades in the night. Even if it is an opening ceremony. Even if you are Shahrukh Khan. He's doing a robotic dance number to "Chak de India". The troupe is also dressed in black, with shiny black helmets. Shah Rukh's changed his costume for his second number, but the dark shades stay. Too much of Bollywood. Most of it, completely lost on Chennai I am sure. The girl dancing with him does some neat magic.

1917 IST While we wait for the noise to end, here's Sharda Ugra's IPL preview. And here's Sriram Veera's preview to the opening game. Plenty of other reading material to get you up to date with the IPL, so check out our IPL series page. Clearly, we haven't been resting since the World Cup ended!

Another Bollywood dance number. Women in red and black, with cheer-leader pompoms in their hands. Kunal Ganjawala, dressed in black, croons "Hamara Kal". Which, as Ramesh Srivats quickly points out on twitter, means "My stone" in Tamil. That song is over, now "Dhoom Machale" by Sunidhi Chauhan. She's dancing as well, in a garish silver costume that suddenly makes the Kochi uniform look better than it actually is.

1910 IST Manasi, Sona and Akrithi are the three singers performing a Hindi number now. They clearly haven't taken lip-syncing classes. #fail

The Boss is on twitter again! Lalit Modi: "Thank you all for all your messages. the show must go on. After all we created it for all the fans. It will always be part of me." His twitter feed currently makes for better entertainment than the opening ceremony.

Gaurav Kapur, the anchor, sounds eerily like Ravi Shastri. Is there some kind of deep baritone training school?

1900 IST Another song. Lyrics: "Sometimes I am high, sometimes I am not .. I am on fire, fire, fire, fire, fire tonight!" Serious competition for Rebecca Black. The trampoline artists are performing some creditable stunts now. This is all so fake. Where is the Fake IPL Player, I say!

Raghav, who Sid Talya informs me, is a rapper of some repute performs next. I can't make out what he is singing. Sounds like "OOOh, ooh ooh ooh, Angel Eyes." Anyone remember the larger than life inflated abomination that looked like the ghost of a 60 feet batsman in the closing ceremony last year? This time they have a fake woman, 60 feet tall, on stilts. There's a guy as well, hoisted atop a huge white balloon. Deja vu - I am reminded of the blimp, which is yet to make an appearance. And there's a trampoline on the turf where a couple of dancers are bouncing about. I doubt if Chepauk has seen scenes this ridiculous, ever. Just start the cricket, already!

Next up, a percussion show by Taufiq Qureishi's Mumbai Stamp. Where is the legendary drummer Sivamani, I say? Drums, tablas, mridangams - if it's a percussion instrument, its out there and there's a lot of coordinated beating. Music to some ears. Noise to others. Priceless - there are people plugging their ears in the crowd!

1850 IST Ah, this looks good. Three groups of dancers, painted from head to toe in saffron, green and white, respectively, the colours of the stripes on the Indian flag, are putting on a nicely coordinated show with sounds and lights. Mild surprise in Cricinfo towers in Bangalore, where the lights go off simultaneously. "Special effects, that go all the way into your homes?", asks Sid Ravindran incredulously. It's just a usual Bangalore power cut though, nothing to do with the revelry in Chennai. And thankfully, our power back-up kicks in. The dancers finish off with a Mexican wave as they make a formation of the Indian flag.

The song and dance begins. The bane of all opening ceremonies in this part of the world. Fireworks, a large number of people dancing in contrived coordination to some fusion music.

1840 IST Shashank Manohar, BCCI president speaks next. "The IPL gives youngsters the chance to rub shoulders with international stars and earn a place in the India side," he says. For some reason, I thought that sentence was completed with the word 'earn'. Ramesh Srivats, Indian twitter superstar tweets thus: "Chirayu: Amin. Modi: Am-out. Sigh." IPL 2011 is declared open.

Sitting in Bangalore, I can hear the applause in the crowd when Shastri welcomes "The Boss, Sachin Tendulkar". Chennai might take umbrage though, Rajnikanth is The Boss in those parts. Mahela Jayawardene follows in easily the most garish IPL jersey ever. Purple and orange for the Kochi Tuskers. Yuvraj Singh looks spanking in Pune's black jersey, though he seems to have added some pounds since the World Cup. Shane Warne and Daniel Vettori round up the signing gig. Bangalore have tweaked their colours a bit, there is a hint of blue on the shoulders, to go with the red and gold.

1835 IST Chennai goes bonkers as Shastri yells into his mike: "May I ask captain fantastic, MS Dhoni to come up and sign the MCC spirit of cricket banner." Dhoni is accompanied by jazzy music and loud applause as he comes to sign the banner. He is followed by Kumar Sangakkara, captain of Deccan Chargers. Next comes Virender Sehwag, donning a lighter shade of blue than Delhi's blazer had last year. Adam Gilchrist follows, in the white and red Punjab colours. And then Gautam Gambhir, in Kolkata's purple fatigues.

Chirayu Amin, the new IPL commisioner speaks first. I wonder what the old one is up to. He is busy sending tweets, as always. Not the most exciting speech you will hear, from Amin. Meanwhile, there's a fan in the crowd dressed up as a mythological south-Indian king, with mace in hand, wearing an armour and a crown. And there's a placard round his neck that reads "King Dhoni".

1830 IST Hello folks! It's that time of the year again. Welcome to IPL 4. The noise has begun already, a lot of manufactured excitement on TV. You know there is hype in the air when Ravi Shastri says the prior seasons of the IPL are responsible for India's World Cup winning team. Navjot Sidhu calls this the rock music of cricket. Oh, well. The opening ceremony gets underway ...

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, no run, length ball from round the wicket, Anirudha leans out to defend to the leg side

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, 1 run, the first run of IPL 2011. Flighted on middle and turning away, Anirudha drives with the spin to mid off

Iqbal Abdulla to Vijay, no run, back of a length outside off and a hint of turn, Vijay adjusts and opens the face to defend to point

Iqbal Abdulla to Vijay, no run, short of a length, Vijay pushes into the covers and thinks of a single, but Tiwary does well to cut it off

Iqbal Abdulla to Vijay, FOUR, Vijay's away. He had a stupendous IPL last year, how will he go this time? Jumps out to a tossed up ball on middle and clips it past mid on for a single

Iqbal Abdulla to Vijay, OUT, four and out. Abdulla has sent Vijay back with some nifty left-arm spin and we have the first wicket of the IPL. He again jumped out of the crease, Abdulla saw him and held it back on middle and got it to grip. Vijay wasn't to the pitch and still went through with an ill-advised on-drive. Straight to mid on.

Raina is in at No. 3. No one's scored more runs in the IPL than this man. Spin from both ends, they seem to have taken a leaf from the World Cup book. Yusuf Pathan to bowl.

Pathan to Anirudha, 1 run, short of a length on middle and turning in, Anirudha tucks it to square leg for one

Yusuf v Raina. The man who owned the India No. 7 spot v the man who took it away. Round the wicket with a slip.

Pathan to Raina, no run, on leg stump, not much turn and tucked away off the back foot to square leg

Pathan to Raina, no run, more air, and wider outside off, Raina pushes out without entirely getting to the pitch and works it to the off side

Pathan to Raina, FOUR, a Twenty20 shot that. Yusuf keeps it short of driving and on middle. Raina jumps out and to the leg side, and ends up going too far from the ball as it breaks away. He reaches out and lofts it just over the infield and through to cover for four.

Pathan to Raina, 1 run, speared in on the pads, drilled past wide mid on for a single

Pathan to Anirudha, no run, turning into the pads, Anirudha works it to square leg.

Tarun: "Was the first ball of the pathan 142.7 kph ?? Can't believe my eyes." It wasn't. That was a lie.

Iqbal Abdulla to Raina, 1 run, over-pitched on the pads and worked to the leg side for a single.

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, no run, once again, the batsman backs away to the leg side and ends up too far from the ball as Abdulla gets a shortish ball to turn away nicely. Anirudha cuts uppishly and straight to point

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, no run, he jumps out of the crease this time, Abdulla again shortens the length and Anirudha can't time the drive into the covers

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, 1 run, speared in on the toes, Anirudha digs it out to mid on for a tight single

Iqbal Abdulla to Raina, 1 run, length ball on the stumps, Raina hangs back in the crease and punched into the leg side for a single.

Kalyan: "@ Nitin... Missing Chatterbox like missing girlfriend in life.. Having for 40-45 days and suddenly vanished making me upset. Is there a any chance of getting chatterbox back in IPL." It became quite a rage, didn't it.. Don't think we'll be having it for the IPL.

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, FOUR, over-pitched well and wide of off stump, Anirudha leans into a flamboyant cover drive. Sid Talya is reminded of Anirudha's dad playing a similar shot in the 1983 World Cup final. That came off Andy Roberts though. Slighly better bowler than Abdulla ..

Pathan to Raina, 1 run, tossed up on middle, Raina leans forward and drives with the spin past mid off

Pathan to Anirudha, no run, flat delivery on middle, Anirudha punches back to the bowler.

We have had a boundary in each of the first three overs. And Harsha Bhogle asks when will they get a move on? Hmm.

Pathan to Anirudha, no run, we don't have no UDRS here. Huge lbw appeal is turned down. Anirudha looks to shuffle across and slog sweep a full ball. Hitting in line, but possibly slipping down.

Pathan to Anirudha, FOUR, juicy offspinner with a white new ball, and the field in. Money for nothing if you are a batsman. Tossed up gently on off, Anirudha slams it through the line over mid off. One bounce and over.

Pathan to Anirudha, 2 wides, Pathan slides this well down the leg side, and they get an extra run.

Pathan to Raina, 1 run, Raina punches off the pads through the leg side and turns the strike over

Pathan to Anirudha, no run, dropped by Yusuf on his follow through. Would have been a soft dismissal, everything happened in slow-mo there. Tossed up on off, Anirudha leans out and works it with the spin right back at Yusuf, who had to jump up and catch it over head. He got his hands to it and missed.

End of over 4 (8 runs) Chennai Super Kings 26/1 (RR: 6.50)

Balaji comes on. Mild confusion for the Chennai crowd. He is from Chennai, and used to play for them until last year.

Balaji to Raina, no run, angles across from over the wicket, Raina stays in the crease and steers into the off side

Balaji to Raina, FOUR, Balaji's surprise slow bouncer. It's so slow and directionless that even Raina, who doesn't play the short ball well, can get it away. It comes along at a dawdle towards the hips, and Raina rolls the wrists as he pulls it fine

Balaji to Raina, no run, aha, Raina backed away too far as he jumped out and Balaji smartly kept it well outside off. No wide, though Raina could not reach it.

Balaji to Raina, no run, this was closer to being a wide, Raina stayed on leg stump and leant out. But he let it go as it was well outside off.

Balaji to Raina, 1 run, Yusuf is having a horror start to the IPL. He's just dropped his second catch of the evening. He had three gos at this one. The first was a sitter, the second was a dolly and the third was tougher, but he held on to none. Slow bouncer, comes on after ages at Raina who looks to pull and top edges it wide of mid on. Yusuf runs back and to his left, puts his hands up and fluffs it on the run. He then fluffs the rebound. And then, as he is falling, he drops it again.

Balaji to Anirudha, 1 run, back of a length on middle and off, Anirudha quietly plays to the leg side.

Sudar: "A four for Every Over. Is that wat T20 is all about?"

End of over 5 (6 runs) Chennai Super Kings 32/1 (RR: 6.40)

    • S Anirudha 12 (13b 2x4)
    • SK Raina 14 (13b 2x4)
    • L Balaji 1-0-6-0

Kallis comes on. In KKR colours.

Kallis to Anirudha, FOUR, lashes away for four. Back of a length on off stump, Anirudha skips out of the crease and looks to drive, but he is not to the pitch of the ball. He throws his bat at it in anger and gets it away to fine leg in a hurry.

Kallis to Anirudha, no run, no feet at all from Anirudha as he stands at attention to a back of length ball and looks to carve in ungainly style. No timing, no surprise.

Kallis to Anirudha, FOUR, whack. He's got good hold of this short one, and thumps it away past point with disdain. Kallis kept it marginally outside off, Anirudha stayed on leg stump and thrashed it past a diving point.

Kallis to Anirudha, FOUR, Chennai get a move on. Kallis hurls in that heavy-ball bouncer of his, Anirudha is clearly beaten for pace as he goes for a pull. He gets a big top edge over the keeper's head for four more.

"Kallis needs to get his length," tweets Lalit Modi.

Kallis to Anirudha, 1 run, keeps it on a length, Anirudha stays on the crease and dabs it to third man for a single

Kallis to Raina, no run, Raina looks to get inside the line and flick, but misses. It goes over leg stump.

Ladda comes on for some leggies.

Ladda to Anirudha, no run, lands it on leg stump from wide of the crease, and it is worked to the leg side

Ladda to Anirudha, 1 run, there is turn on this wicket. Back of a length outside off, spin and bounce away from Anirudha who can't control the cut and nearly finds point, diving away to his left.

Ladda to Raina, FOUR, top shot from Raina. Leans out, bends the knee, gets to the pitch, gets under the ball and scoops it inside out over the covers. Top timing.

Chennai have 50.

Ladda to Raina, no run, faster on middle and off, played with a straight ball to the leg side.

Ladda to Raina, 1 run, over-pitched on leg stump, Raina drives fluidly past mid on for a single

Ladda to Anirudha, SIX, start the counter. The first six of the IPL. And guess what, it is not being hailed as a "DLF maximum". Lalit Modi, you are being missed! Tossed up leggie on off stump, Anirudha hops out, gets to the pitch and tees off straight over long off. That landed in the Marina beach, by the looks of it.

End of over 7 (12 runs) Chennai Super Kings 57/1 (RR: 8.14)

Rajat Bhatia comes on for some seamers. And well, Robin Jackman ends the dream. He's anointed that shot as the first DLF maximum of the season. Start the tuk-tuk.

Bhatia to Anirudha, 1 run, slow legcutter on off and middle, cannily landed short of a length and Anirudha hangs back and slaps it to the leg side for a single

Bhatia to Anirudha, 1 run, another slower ball, ends a good over from Bhatia. Anirudha was days early into the shot as he chipped it uppishly over mid on for a single

Raghu: "Kolkata might have spent millions on Gambhir, Pathan & Kallis, but their bowling looks very very weak."

Prasad: "A player wearing full sleeve jersey in Chennai! Thats something new." And that too, a local player! Crazy from Anirudha. But then, he is Chika's son ..

Kalyan: "KKR have changed almost everything. From Captain to Players , Uniform etc. etc.. but the Luck remain same.. "

Prathap: "Do they have the ad time-out in this IPL too? Or is it removed as Modi is gone?" Well, they are having it right now.

Sandeep: "If the singer Kamaal Khan had a twin bother who was arrested by cops for criminal activities, what would you call it? ...."A Karbonn Kamaal Katch" !!"

And what would you call a completely impossible catch that defies logic? A Karbon Kamran Akmal catch.

Balaji to Raina, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Raina stays on the crease and dabs to third man

Balaji to Raina, 2 runs, back of a length on the hips, Raina whips through square leg for a single.

Balaji to Raina, FOUR, shot of the day. Raina gets a length ball on middle and thumps it on the up, inside out and almost all the way over the extra cover boundary. The wrists uncorked superbly and the follow through was regal.

Balaji to Raina, no run, nice comeback, Balaji shortens the length and gets Raina fishing outside off

Vineet: "Where is Ryan Ten Doeschte??? How could Knight Riders leave such a class player?" I am surprised too.

Bhatia to Raina, 1 run, ends with a slow offcutter, Raina gets forward and eases it through mid off for a single

Amraiz: "Imagine Wasim Akram giving bowling tips to Bret Lee, ah can't wait"

Murali: "Is Rajat Bhatia or Shukla a better player than Ten Doeschate?? Any good reason why he is warming the bench??" Maybe because it gets cold otherwise, on the bench?

Ara: "Atleast Kolkatta don't have to use Agarkar this year." Small mercies.

Vijay: "@Murali---Gauti may plan to get rid of the bowlers whom he does not like..use them in a first match--see their perfomance and ask them to sit on the bench until final as MSD did for Sreesanth..." Aha, so RTD is mentally strong, like Ashwin, and hence hasn't been picked, eh?

Uzair: "As far as KKR are concerned, couple of players will make way for Brett Lee and Haddin when they come back and I assume it would be Bhatia and Bisla. Cant wait to see Haddin and Kallis opening the batting." Well, Bhatia has bowled very well so far.

Amit: "Kolkata is not kolkata without Sourav Ganguly. He was the best player for them last year and would done a better job that gautam is doing as captain."

Raghu: "Guys.. When is the Batting Powerplay going to be taken??" As always, after 40 overs. By which time, this game will be over.

Dee: "Every catch dropped in cricket will be a tribute to Kamran Akmal"

Sumanth: "Is there a MRF blimp flying in this season also?? If yes, please ask the commentators not to mention it more than ten times per match."

Jmin: "my team is Chennai and no wonder my wife doesn't like it. her kolkata blood is boiling right now."

Ladda to Dhoni, 1 run, tossed up by Ladda outside off, Dhoni drives in customary ugly style past cover for one

Ladda to Anirudha, no run, holds it back on leg stump, Anirudha doesn't get fully to the pitch as he plays it back down down the track

Ladda to Anirudha, no run, slows it up, drops the length as Anirudha skips out and ends up foxing him in the flight again. Anirudha plays all over it and gets it to the leg side somehow.

Ladda to Anirudha, no run, this has been a really queer innings from Anirudha. He's hardly looked at ease, yet played some cracking shots. At times, he's looked completely out of touch, like this. Short ball well outside off and turning well away. Surely a wide if he had left it, but he reached out ungainly and played it tamely to cover

Ladda to Anirudha, 1 run, faster and fuller on middle, Anirudha gets the shovel sweep away for a single to deep square leg

Ladda to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni keeps strike with another single, square driving with the spin

Ganesh: "KKR without dada is like ocean without salt." Aren't oceans better off that way?

Iqbal Abdulla to Anirudha, 1 run, Anirudha stays back to a short ball and pulls for a single.

Iqbal Abdulla to Dhoni, FOUR, full toss on leg stump, not a good idea when you're bowling to Dhoni. He gets it at knee height and bunts it hard down the ground in customary style. Played a few of these the other night at the Wankhede where there was some cricket match being played.

Iqbal Abdulla to Dhoni, 1 run, full again, and wide of off stump, Dhoni drives through the covers for a single

End of over 15 (9 runs) Chennai Super Kings 107/2 (RR: 7.13)

Ladda to Dhoni, SIX, oh boy, Dhoni has smashed the leather off that one. Over-pitched on middle, it might have actually been too full for the usual lofted drive. But Dhoni has the ability to make room and create that helicopter swish of the bat which means unless you york him, he will get under the ball. He sure got under that one.

Ladda to Dhoni, no run, flatter and wisely so, Dhoni can't get it away.

Ladda to Dhoni, 1 run, shorter, Dhoni works it to the leg side for a single.

Ladda to Anirudha, SIX, that's like the kind of ball a friendly dad would bowl to his five-year old son who is holding a bat for the first time. Short and excruciatingly slow outside off, Anirudha waits on the crease and pummels it over square leg.

Ladda to Anirudha, no run, and the reverse sweep now. He times it pretty well, but finds the man at short third man

Ladda to Anirudha, 1 run, gets the single this time, driving down to long on. Chennai are motoring away here. Unfortunately, KKR can't wait for the batting Powerplay to jinx them.

Balaji returns.

Ankit: "Doesn't matter how many sixes Dhoni hits from now on till the end of his career, but I will never ever forget the one he hit last Saturday to win us the World Cup. I must have watched it at least 150 times, and each time with more anticipation than previously. Oh the feeling!"

Balaji to Anirudha, no run, looks for the yorker straight away, Anirudha tries to crash it down the ground but can't get under it. Played to point.

Balaji to Anirudha, 1 run, slow bouncer on middle stump, Anirudha waits and whacks the pull without timing to deep midwicket

Balaji to Dhoni, 1 run, another slower ball, short and cramping Dhoni for room as he tries to cut. He gets it down to third man with a steer

Anand: "If oceans are better without salt, then we all would be eating tasteless food." I am enlightened.

Kallis comes back on now. The late charge is on.

Kallis to Dhoni, 2 runs, full toss, very high and on the stumps, Dhoni pulls it down the ground for a couple. Good running from Anirudha.

Kallis to Dhoni, OUT, Kallis has removed Dhoni. It is the slow bouncer. Sri Lanka, if they are watching, will be wondering why they did not try it the other night. Kallis rolls his fingers over it and the offcutter comes on much after Dhoni sets up a big backswing and looks for the whacked pull. He gets a feeble top edge and it loops up for an easy take to Bisla.

MS Dhoni c †Bisla b Kallis 29 (21b 1x4 1x6) SR: 138.09

Morkel is the new man in. He's the Titans player of the year.

Kallis to Morkel, 1 run, slow offcutter from Kallis, lands on a length and goes away from Morkel who steers to third man

Boy, Anirudha might just carry his bat here.

Kallis to Morkel, 1 run, full and aimed at the pads as Morkel gets outside leg stump and looks to flick. Gets it away to the off side for a single

Kallis to Anirudha, no run, looks to pull and misses as Kallis keeps it cannily straight and just short of a length outside off.

Gordon: "I know Doug Bollinger isn't playing, but my, Jacques Kallis is looking more like him every day with that statesman on his scalp." Haha!

Balaji to Morkel, no run, the slow bouncers are working well tonight. Balaji sends one slow outside off and Morkel looks to pull. But it is too slow, and he misses to connect.

Balaji to Morkel, 1 run, angled across, Morkel looks to carve but gets an under edge to Bisla on the bounce, diving away to his left. They run a mad single and Bisla misses the under-arm flick. Would have been out by half a pitch

Balaji to Anirudha, 2 runs, short ball, Anirudha is in position quickly and gets the pull shot away with pleasing timing to deep square leg where there is protection

Balaji to Anirudha, 1 run, another bouncer, Anirudha is hustled into the pull and top-edges it down the ground. Chennai are losing steam against these smart slow bouncers.

Balaji to Morkel, no run, Morkel mistimes another pull as Balaji lands short of a length. Squirts off the inner half towards midwicket

Balaji to Morkel, 1 run, full toss outside off, Morkel sets up a solid base and has a wholesome swing at it, but hits it straight to long on. Just a single.

One over to go, CSK need it to be a big one. KKR are on top at the moment.

Jai: "Just great ! We get rid of this Balaji guy and he starts to bowl like a million dollars!" Murphy's law of IPL auctions.

Kallis to Morkel, 1 run, Kallis sends down a full toss outside off and Morkel looks to thump it over the covers, but can't get the gap.

Kallis to Anirudha, OUT, I've never seen someone appeal so hard for a bowled dismissal. That's a very useful yorker from Kallis, it was angling into the toes as Anirudha looked to whip to the leg side, but could not get the bat down in time. Hits the pad and then disturbs the furniture. Would have been lbw in any case.

S Anirudha b Kallis 64 (55b 6x4 2x6) SR: 116.36

Styris walks out. Chennai are floundering.

Kallis to Styris, FOUR, offcutter gone wrong, the angle and the turn takes it down the leg side and Styris merrily swipes his first ball in a yellow jersey over to backward square leg.

Kallis to Styris, 1 run, super yorker, ends up on middle and Styris quietly pats into the covers for a single

Vijay: "KKR could be the only to play with less than 4 Foreign players, putting their faith on the Local boys. Good to see that it has yielded results for them."

Kallis to Morkel, FOUR, you can't hit straighter than that without hitting the stumps. Yorker misses by an inch or so, as Morkel moves away to the leg side and then scythes a drive just past the stumps and it shoots across the turf for a four.

Kallis to Morkel, SIX, that's out of here. Kallis has finished with a poor over, and that was the poorest of the lot. Length ball on Morkel's stumps as he was opening up the off side by backing away. He saw it in the slot and just butchered it over long on. Mighty blow, and that's a nice late flourish for CSK.

Sumeet: "Note South Africa : This is what Morkel can do. "

Right. I have around 10 minutes to gobble my dinner. See you all in a bit. Meanwhile, here is Howzat, our online social cricket game. Much fun to be had.
