Indian Premier League, 50th match: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kochi Tuskers Kerala at Bengaluru, May 8, 2011
Royal Challengers Bangalore won by 9 wickets (with 41 balls remaining)
8 May 2011 - day/night match (20-over match)

Oh so it is finally figured out it is Kochi v Bangalore. Zaheer to Klinger, left-arm over

Five minutes to go to the start. Sincere apologies everybody for letting an expletive slip through in a reader comment. It was an oversight, a serious one at that, and Cricinfo never intends to use abuse on the site. Andy writes in, "How about we all shut off our computers and laptops and watch the news at the end of the day instead of watching live updates of the cricket match on CRICINFO.COM??? Another Green initiative, isint it???" You are an absolute legend, Andy

Toss Royal Challengers Bangalore are wearing green and gold, as opposed to the shiny red and gold. They are supporting some environmental project. Perhaps they could start by resolving to not play under floodlights, if they cared so much for it. And while they are at it they might want to do something about the noise pollution the F1 cars generate

Mahela Jayawardene has won the toss and is batting first. Sreesanth has been left out, making way for Ramesh Powar. Bangalore have left out Asad Pathan, and brought in Cheteshwar Pujara. Good move, getting a proper batsman in

Aakarsh writes in, "Go Green at B'lore??Thought that applies to the patch as well but.........." Well in some Ranji matches I have seen some of the greenest wickets ever at the Chinnaswamy... with knee-high bounce. It would be so surreal it seemed like it was just a paint job to fool the visiting captaining into fielding first

Alex on a related note: "Talking about bangalore's green initiative, wonder how much of a help that would be if Mallya stopped using his private jet and sports cars."

Chethan is seething at people suggesting where else the franchise representing Bangalore could go green. He writes in, "Ah seriously, not making sense. If somebody has taken up some initiative, there are two things you can do. Either appreciate/support them or Shut up and do your commentary job. Also the pun intended weather references sucked yesterday. Lets see if you put this on."

Prithvi: "RCB has done something if not nothing when it comes to environmental awareness. They are providing car pooling cabs for fans coming to Chinnaswamy. Any little effort for going green must be encouraged and not be criticized for the sake of funny updates."

Nick is closer to the cynicism Sunday afternoons should generate. He says, "Upcourse Green Initiative is important specially in India, but living in USA I know its not something new. This is commercial gold mine and all other owners must be banging their head for not coming up with this first."

Shan: "With all the appreciation for RCB's green movement, its a fact this is one of the publicity stunts. Its these day/night matches (in the weekend), those private jets, etc, etc do cause more damage than what those car pooling and green dress can save."

3.20pm Welcome to the golden jubilee IPL match. Just wondering what Lalit Modi thinks of this tournament, which took me to his Twitter page. The man is following IPL religiously, or at least he has a statistician who is. Three hours ago he tweeted, "Number of wides and legbyes...all gone down significantly this year. Noballs &byes gone up...good job bowling coaches! balance b/w bat & bal" Only the second response to that tweet is, "Knowing all these numbers by heart proves one & only one thing @LalitKModi is still"THE UNDISPUTED KING OF IPL".No doubt about it.;)" Although I don't know a bowling coach who can consciously reduce leg-byes, or can consider increasing no-balls "good job".

In other news, toss for today's game in 10 minutes. You could scroll up to see who is playing who. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it

Aravind to McCullum, FOUR, Baz has arrived to the ground where he scored 158 three years ago. Dances down the track and lofts this length ball over mid-off. Bring it on BMac

Aravind to McCullum, no run, tries another one, but this time Arvind bowls it a bit wide, and McCullum slogs as opposed to the previous straight hit. No connection made

Khan to Klinger, 1 run, straight, worked around the corner for one

Ben: "When you first said it was a green strip, I thought it was dark green and that it wasn't so bad. Having seen it, it looks like someone's just vomited on their kit!" Graphic

Khan to McCullum, 2 runs, BMac is feeling it. Charges at Zaheer this time, and - it's not the best shot you will see - somehow manages to get it over midwicket. Cramped he was on this shot

Khan to McCullum, 1 run, slower ball, opens the face on it, and they steal a single to cover-point

Khan to Klinger, FOUR, loose ball, and accepted with gratitude by Klinger. Full on the pads with short fine leg up. Four runs

Khan to Klinger, no run, pulls the length back a bit, more towards middle than leg, defended

Khan to Klinger, 1 run, McCullum is electirc in stealing this single as Klinger just drops this towards point, and McCullum calls him through and makes it to the danger end

Keeper comes up to keep BMac in the crease

Aravind to McCullum, no run, stays back of a length, tucks him up

Aravind to McCullum, 1 run, swept away powerfully, one bounce to deep square leg

Chris Gayle to bowl

Gayle to McCullum, no run, full and fastish, stays back and defends

Gayle to McCullum, FOUR, well played again, charged at him, made room too, took this on the full, and drove it past point

Gayle to McCullum, no run, near yorker outside off, beats him

Gayle to McCullum, FOUR, another four, does well to recover after an early charge. This becomes a highish full toss, but he chips it over Gayle's head

Gayle to McCullum, 1 wide, wide down the leg side

Gayle to McCullum, 3 runs, that's a bad fall, and I have always felt that the Bangalore outfield is the worst in the country. It is a superb ground otherwise, and can throw up good wickets and crowds, but the bumpy outfield is the most dangerous for a fielder. There is a stretcher coming out for Pujara. I hope this doesn't cost him months, he had just about started to cement a place in the Test side. So this is what happened. McCullum drive it through extra cover, first Dilshan made a diving save at the fence, his knee bounced off the outfield as he did so. Pujara, who followed him to the fence, hurt his knee as he went down for the slide. Now, though, he says no to the stretcher, and walks back on his own two feet

Gayle to Klinger, no run, quick, into the pads, defended

End of over 5 (12 runs) Kochi Tuskers Kerala 41/0 (RR: 8.20)

    • M Klinger 20 (17b 3x4)

DannyV to Bmac now. This should be interesting

Vettori to McCullum, no run, Mcullum charges at Vettori first ball. Vettori stays slow through the air, McCullum is early into the shot, gets an inside edge that saves him from the stumping

Vettori to McCullum, 2 runs, flighted nicely again, clipped away off the pads, wide of deep backward square leg

Vettori to McCullum, OUT, Vettori wins over fellow Kiwi. He is a shrewd bowler. McCullum charges at him again, Vettori refuses to push it through, instead bowling it slightly short and slightly wide, MCCullum is beaten in the flight and ends up spooning this to short third man

Parthiv Patel comes in

Vettori to Patel, 1 run, works this off the pads to get off the mark

Vettori to Klinger, 1 run, worked off the pads again, gets another single

Vettori to Patel, FOUR, nicely played, very quick footwork. Patel presses forward, sees this is a bit short, and quickly transfers the weight back to cut this for four

End of over 6 (8 runs) Kochi Tuskers Kerala 49/1 (RR: 8.16)

    • PA Patel 5 (2b 1x4)
    • M Klinger 21 (18b 3x4)

Nick: "We all know that Sreesanth is often synonyms to inconsistent and out of control, but in this IPL he has been very impressive. He has lowest economy rate of all Kochi bowlers. Can't understand why P Parameswaran is better than Sreesanth.;team=4788;type=tournament"

And watching at his reaction from footage before the match, Sree can't understand too. He seemed livid when he was seemingly told he was not playing.

Abhimanyu Mithun, one of the promising young fast bowlers, comes on. He is very fit and strong, uncharacteristic for a fast bowler in india

Mithun to Klinger, 1 run, back of a length outside off, runs this down to third man

Mithun to Patel, 1 no ball, Caught off a no-ball. This one stopped a bit, lobbed to short midwicket. And what is this poor awareness of cricket laws? This is the second time in this IPL somebody has broken stumps when a batsman is walking off dismissed off a no-ball. That just won't earn you a run-out, boys. He doesn't know it is a no-ball, and is walking back in good faith, and not even trying a run. Aleem Dar has to remind Bangalore of that

Free hit

Mithun to Patel, FOUR, short down the leg side, Patel gets enough bat on this to send it wide of the keeper

Mithun to Patel, 1 run, opens the face on this to get a single to third man

Mithun to Klinger, no run, cut away, Dilshan makes a diving save at point

Mithun to Klinger, 1 run, dropped to square leg for a single

Mithun to Patel, 1 run, another dab to third man for one

End of over 7 (9 runs) Kochi Tuskers Kerala 58/1 (RR: 8.28)

Pranav: "How about adding some more green grass to the Chinnaswamy outfield? A Green initiative gone unnoticed??" Pranav, it's not just about the grass. The ground is over-used, and never really gets time to work on the outfield. I love the ground, but not the outfield. I'd hate to field there

Vettori to Patel, no run, whipped away off the pads, finds square leg

Vettori to Patel, FOUR, another whip, lovely turn of the wrists, beats short fine leg, and Zaheer Khan - perhaps aware of the perils of the Bangalore outfield - doesn't put in the dive

Vettori to Patel, no run, tossed up on middle and off, driven back to Vettori

Vettori to Patel, 1 run, opens the face towards point and steals one

Vettori to Klinger, no run, shimmies down the track, Vettori tosses it up higher, Klinger defends it back

Vettori to Klinger, 1 run, flat, cut away to short third man for a single

End of over 8 (6 runs) Kochi Tuskers Kerala 64/1 (RR: 8.00)

    • M Klinger 24 (23b 3x4)
    • PA Patel 16 (10b 3x4)

Gayle comes back

Gayle to Klinger, no run, comes down the track, hits to the left of straight midwicket, where Dilshan makes a diving save

Gayle to Klinger, OUT, yorked him, bowled him! Gayle is loving this. Klinger looks to charge at him, Gayle bowls this right on the crease, and takes the middle stump out. And what an ever-lasting smile Gayle has on his face. And his team-mates are enjoying this too. Although he doesn't dance this time

M Klinger b Gayle 24 (37m 25b 3x4 0x6) SR: 96.00

Mahela Jayawardene comes in now

Gayle to Jayawardene, no run, full, on the pads, played straight to midwicket

Gayle to Jayawardene, no run, hit to the right of Gayle who gets in front of Parthiv and fields, and then wraps an arm around Patel to seemingly apologise. Doesn't look like it

Gayle to Jayawardene, 1 wide, wide down the leg side

Gayle to Jayawardene, 1 wide, Gayle is obviously looking to cramp him up, but he has bowled it down the leg side again

Gayle to Jayawardene, 1 wide, Gayle is winning this battle of wides hands down. This pitches leg, Mahela sneaks himself inside the line, and let sit turn down the leg side

Gayle to Jayawardene, 1 run, pushed down to long-on to get off the mark

Gayle to Patel, no run, another yorker, hit back to Gayle

End of over 9 (4 runs) Kochi Tuskers Kerala 68/2 (RR: 7.55)

Vettori to Patel, 1 run, big front foot down the ground, slog-sweep, along the ground, gets a single

Vettori to Jayawardene, 1 run, short, turning away, cut in front of square

Vettori to Patel, 1 run, straighter one, worked away off the pads for one

Vettori to Jayawardene, no run, nicely flighted, around off and thereabouts, Mahela defends

Vettori to Jayawardene, OUT, DannyV bowls a peach here, and Mahela looks at the pitch as if it is somebody who has let him down. This is flatter, quicker, pitched outside off, just short of driving length, Mahela looks to push it into the off side, gets a thin edge as the ball turns sharply and kisses the edge on the way to de Villiers. And by the way - not that there is anything wrong with not walking - Mahela is not a walker, unlike many believe him to be

Brad Hodge is the new man in

Gayle to Hodge, OUT, and whoa what a crazy run-out pulled off by ABD. Take a bow AB de Villiers! He didn't need to do this, but he has done it. What drama between Hodge and Patel too. Back from start. Hodge cuts it to short third and charges off right away. Patel, whose call it should be, says no after a bit, and both start going to the non-striker's end. de Villiers meanwhile doesn't know that this is an easy chance, and gets this wild throw, collects it diving to his left, and in the same motion flicks it onto the stumps even as he is going down. To make it more dramatic, there is a photo finish as to who is closer to the non-striker's out and should stay back. Replays show Patel has lost by inches

Gayle to Hodge, no run, if you are really uncharitable, you could call this this a missed stumping. Gayle saw Hodge come down the track, slipped this in full, beat the bat, and difficult as it is to spot when somebody is hitting over the top of the ball, it also kicked off from a full length. No chance for AB

Gayle to Hodge, no run, Gayle is loving this, this time with a diving save to his left to save a single

Gayle to Hodge, 1 run, helped away into the leg side for one
