Indian Premier League, 1st Qualifying Final: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Chennai Super Kings at Mumbai, May 24, 2011
Indian Premier League - 1st qualifying final
Chennai Super Kings won by 6 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
24 May 2011 - night match (20-over match)

Vinod Charan Dass says this: "@Jabari - One Jerome Taylor was already sent to West Indies before the current match started, but he was not selected. What is the guarentee Gayle or Bravo will be called in even if available..? The WI Cric Board are a "bully" now!!" No such selection issues for Gayle here as he walks out to open the innings with Mayank Agarwal. And it's Agarwal who is taking first strike, with the umpires in orange shirts. Albie Morkel to bowl, one slip in

7.50pm On a day that West Indies are inching towards a Test defeat, Chris Gayle is the biggest topic in the lead-up to the match here. It will be equally interesting to see who opens the innings with him. Jabari sends in an SOS: "Paging Gayle and Bravo. You are needed in St. Kitts immediately."

Dagz meanwhile writes in, "Hey Sid, just to translate re: Antipodean usage of "a couple" -- quite often it doesn't literally mean "two" and can mean a lot more, depending on the population. The same goes for "a few".

eg. a bloke telling his missus he was dropping down the pub for "a couple of quiets" would probably more than likely be planning to drink 8+ pints..."

I agree. When it comes to pints, a couple of them hardly ever means just two. Another lesson on a day that I have been rolling on the floor listening to Kevin Bloody Wilson

Toss Daniel Vettori says the whole team is charged up. His knee is feeling good, and "it's only a couple of games". He is either confident of winning today, or if he loses today, he is not quite confident of making the final. Or most plausibly, he is not a pedant and an impulsive subeditor. MS Dhoni has won the toss and Chennai will field. It's a slightly surprising decision because the pitch is expected to assist turn, but Dhoni wants to capitalise on the early swing. Both teams are unchanged from their last games

7.15pm It's Chennai v Bangalore once again. This time in neutral territory, the Wankhede Stadium. This is the first play-off, not quite a knockout. The winner goes to the final, the loser goes to Chennai to play another play-off, against the winner of the match between teams that ended three and four. This is the new IPL format wherein sides finishing one and two get rewarded for their consistency with one extra shot at making the final. Bangalore will be more desperate to win this - if such a thing is possible - because even if Chennai lose this, they get another go in Chennai, where they are yet to lose a game this season. That said, I don't think no side will say, "Oh it's okay, we have another game left." We have 15 minutes to go to toss, you could play the selector yourself until then, and listen to Sanjay Manjrekar on the past week in the IPL.

Morkel to Agarwal, FOUR, juicy gift first up, leg-side length ball with fine leg pretty square. Agarwal says, "Thank you very much," and clips this fine for four

Morkel to Agarwal, no run, just outside off this time, and near yorker length, dug out square

Morkel to Agarwal, 1 leg bye, aha, a big swing from Agarwal, gets a thick inside edge onto the pads. They take the single. On strike comes Gayle

Morkel to Gayle, no run, yorker, or nearly there, just outside off, played back to Albie

Morkel to Gayle, 1 run, charges at Morkel, gets too close to the delivery, and gets a single off the inside half of the bat. The long-on is deep

Morkel to Agarwal, 1 run, back of a length, outside off, guided to third man for one

End of over 1 (7 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 7/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • MA Agarwal 5 (4b 1x4)

Doug Bollinger to share the new ball. Just the one slip in

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, back of a length, around off, punched to point

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, looks for the upper cut, but Bollinger's bouncer is a bit too quick for him

Bollinger to Agarwal, 1 run, cut away to third man for one, more of a steer than a forceful shot

Bollinger to Gayle, 4 leg byes, Nasty nasty bouncer, kicking off just short of a length, and Gayle is late ducking into it. Flies off the shoulder for four leg-byes. Bollinger stares at Gayle, and then has a quiet word. These two seem to be good friends

Bollinger to Gayle, no run, more fun as Gayle backs away to send this to the Arabian Sea, but doesn't quite connect and hits it towards mid-on

Bollinger to Gayle, no run, Gayle backs away again, Bollinger follows him with a short ball again, Gayle pulls out of the shot. Good stuff

End of over 2 (5 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 12/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • MA Agarwal 6 (7b 1x4)
    • DE Bollinger 1-0-1-0

Morkel to Agarwal, FOUR, Agarwal had some trouble with Bollinger's pace, but finds Morkel's just fine. It's a length ball, and he has lofted it straight over Morkel's head

Morkel to Agarwal, FOUR, clever stuff from Agarwal, backs away early, makes Morkel follow him, gets inside the line and flicks this fine of short fine leg

Morkel to Agarwal, 1 run, pulls the length back this time, tucked away off the hips for a single

Morkel to Gayle, 1 run, short, into the ribs, keeps the pull down, gets the single

Morkel to Agarwal, no run, nice check-drive from off-side line, but finds cover

Slip comes out

Morkel to Agarwal, 2 runs, nice late-cut, slightly square of third man, comes back for a two even as Jakati makes a diving save at the boundary

End of over 3 (12 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 24/0 (RR: 8.00)

    • MA Agarwal 17 (12b 3x4)
    • CH Gayle 2 (6b)
    • JA Morkel 2-0-18-0
    • DE Bollinger 1-0-1-0

Oh what a killjoy Dhoni is. Doesn't give us part two of Gayle v Bollinger. Ashwin to bowl now, but IIRC Gayle showed some respect to Ashwin in the last game. Long-off is back

Ashwin to Gayle, no run, dangerously non-turning and accurate delivery. Gayle gets the bat down in time

Ashwin to Gayle, SIX, slightly too short, not too short mind you, but Gayle rocks back and pulls this over cow corner. No respect tonight

Ashwin to Gayle, OUT, and Ashwin strikes immediately after getting hit for a six again! And this is not the first time it has happened. I am not too sure about the decision, though. This was on offbreak that pitched short of a driving length and beat Gayle's sweep. Live time, I thought there was too much bounce and turn to be sure. Simon Taufel disagreed, and raised the finger. And as it so often happens, Simon Taufel is correct. Replays show it pitched in line with leg stump, turned a little, and skidded as opposed to bouncing too much. Would have hit the leg stump

CH Gayle lbw b Ashwin 8 (9b 0x4 1x6) SR: 88.88

Stays round the wicket to the new man Kohli

Ashwin to Kohli, no run, angled across him, played to cover

Ashwin to Kohli, no run, defended into the leg side

    • R Ashwin 1-0-6-1

Change of ends for Bollinger

Bollinger to Agarwal, 1 wide, fast delivery, surprises him a touch, but it is down the leg side too

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, angled a cross Agarwal, slight seam movement away too, and beats Agarwal's drive

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, bouncer, 136ks, good typical Mumbai bounce, Dhoni collects it in front of his face

Bollinger to Agarwal, FOUR, risky shot, punched away through the cover ring, and in the air too. It didn't go over anybody's head, just found the gap between cover-point and cover

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, opens him up like a can of beans, back of a length, slight seam movement away, and beats Agarwal's attempt to run this down

Bollinger to Agarwal, no run, looks for the third man area, but is cramped up by the line around off

Bollinger to Agarwal, FOUR, slower ball but Agarwal goes ahead with his drive, and puts enough behind this to clear mid-off. He has kept the momentum up for Bangalore despite Gayle's loss

End of over 5 (9 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 39/1 (RR: 7.80)

    • MA Agarwal 25 (18b 5x4)
    • V Kohli 0 (3b)

    • R Ashwin 1-0-6-1

Ashwin to Kohli, 1 wide, flat delivery outside leg

Ashwin to Kohli, 1 run, full on the pads, worked away for a single

Gareth: "You'd have to think that Ashwin's consistancy in the IPL and Ranji trophy would have to have put him ahead of Bhaji as India's first choice spinner. He just really seems unflappable at the moment." In limited-overs cricket, worth a thought. Not in Tests

Ashwin to Agarwal, 1 run, pushed towards cover. Straight delivery

Ashwin to Kohli, no run, straight delivery again, can't get it past square leg

Ashwin to Kohli, 1 run, goes deep to pull this down to long-on for one

Anil Kumble says he would have thought about bowling along side Dan Vettori for these last few games, but the IPL rules wouldn't have allowed it. That would have been some attack with these two professors of parsimony bowling in tandem.

And just saw again Ashwin's reaction after getting Gayle's wicket. He made the cut-throat sign with his thumb. Hmm

Bravo comes back

Bravo to Pomersbach, no run, beats him on the cut, angling this across him

Bravo to Pomersbach, FOUR, Muscle! Charges at Bravo and murders this short ball wide of long-on, who didn't have too much to move but couldn't. This went just too fast

Bravo to Pomersbach, FOUR, Dropped? Not really, Dhoni is standing up, and this is a healthy enough edge for Pomersbach. Streaky but four

Bravo to Pomersbach, SIX, Fat flat six, one of the flattest you'll see. Pulled away from rib high, and goes over midwicket, into the boundary boards

Bravo to Pomersbach, 2 runs, beautiful shot, on the up, inside out, past extra cover, along the ground

Bollinger comes back

Bollinger to Pomersbach, no run, walks at him, digs out a yorker, and Bollinger dives to his right to prevent the single

Bollinger to Pomersbach, 1 run, nearly does it all by himself. Superb stuff from Doug. First of all a big short ball, no room at all, Luke gets a limp top edge, and Doug runs towards short cover, and makes a one-handed catch, but as he makes the fall, the ball bounces out on impact

Pomersbach warned for running on the pitch. Luke says, "What do you mean warning?" Rauf is not impressed. He says, "Warning means you are running on the pitch, you are damaging the pitch. Next time no runs."

Bollinger to Kohli, 1 run, driven past extra cover for one

Bollinger to Pomersbach, OUT, Timber! Pomersbach had the right idea. This was a length ball, he stood tall, and looked to bosh it over midwicket. However, he swung down the wrong line, and the off stump is out of the ground

Ashwin to Kohli, 1 run, short and wide, cut away straight to deep point

Round the wicket to the left-hand bat

Ashwin to Tiwary, FOUR, full and wide, and Tiwary biffs this over extra cover. Not the best-looking extra cover drive but it does the job

Ashwin to Tiwary, 2 runs, oh he has nearly killed Ashwin. He doesn't seem to know where he is. Nasty nasty hit. All Tiwary's muscle into this shot back at Ashwin, who doesn't have time to get out of the way and is hit straight on the head. It was hit so hard the ricochet flew to long-off, and they came back for two. He just didn't know for a moment where he was. Walks off the field. Gavaskar reckons they should have called for the stretcher

Morkel comes back

Morkel to Kohli, 2 runs, pulled down the ground, bad bounce for Bravo at long-on, and they are alert enough to come back for the second

Fine leg up in the circle

Morkel to Kohli, FOUR, Kolhi completes a very important half-century with a lovely boundary. Makes room, lofts this late, over point. Kohli keeps improving every day

Morkel to Kohli, SIX, Whoa. What a hit. Poor bowling I must say. Gentle pace. Length ball. Ripe for the taking. Over long-on

Morkel to Kohli, SIX, Length ball again. Gentle pace again. Morkel cannot keep bowling this length at this pace. And Kohli handsomely goes inside-out over extra cover

Morkel to Kohli, 1 run, gets across this time and flicks this towards deep midwicket

Bollinger to Kohli, 1 run, low full toss outside off, drives square, but can't beat point

Over in Paris, Rafa Nadal has dodged an Isner-sized bullet in little over four hours, winning 6-4 in the fifth set

Bollinger to Tiwary, 1 run, Oh Tiwary's role seems to be to take out the Chennai bowlers! This is pulled, but late into the shot, and hit right back at Bollinger. Not as powerfully as the hit to Ashwin. Bollinger can't hold onto it. Very tough chance it was

Bollinger to Kohli, 2 byes, slower ball, beats him, Kohli goes for the bye, and Dhoni goes for the unnecessary hit and concedes the overthrow. Very un-Dhoni like

Bollinger to Kohli, 2 runs, rare length ball from Bollinger, hit wide of long-on, Kohli comes back for two

Bollinger to Kohli, no run, back of a length, angling across him, Kohli heaves and misses. A rare blip on a very important innings

Good spirit shown as his India team-mate, Suresh Raina, pats Kohli's back. And what an innings Kolhi has played. Was the anchor-man to begin with, and then targeted Morkel ruthlessly. Seventy off 44. Improving with almost every innings. Test debut this year, Virat? We will be back with the chase soon
