Mumbai Indians snap up much-wanted Levi

70

Mumbai Indians have signed Richard Levi, the much-wanted South Africa batsman who recently hit the fastest Twenty20 international hundred, as a replacement for allrounder Andrew Symonds. Levi, who went unsold in the IPL player auction on February 4, had been contacted by various IPL franchises following his record-breaking century in the second Twenty20 international against New Zealand in Hamilton. Symonds, the former Australia allrounder, retired from professional cricket, citing family reasons, earlier this month.

Levi announced his arrival on the international stage in only his second T20I. Opening the innings in South Africa's chase of 174 against New Zealand, he smashed 13 sixes - a record - in an unbeaten 117 off 51 balls. His century came off just 45 balls. Prior to that knock, Levi had spent four seasons with South African franchise Cape Cobras, impressing in the domestic limited-overs competitions and the 2011-12 Champions League.

Levi said he was excited to join Mumbai Indians because he would have the opportunity to play alongside his hero Sachin Tendulkar. "I have heard from friends that Mumbai Indians is like an extended family where the team shares a great bond and trusts youngsters," he said. "Sachin Tendulkar has been my childhood hero and it would be exciting to share the dressing room with him."

Mumbai Indians started the last IPL season with Tendulkar opening alongside Davy Jacobs, the South African wicketkeeper-batsman. Jacobs, though, has had problems with injuries and has not played professional cricket since last year's Champions League due to a recurring hip problem. Mumbai Indians have had to try different opening combinations, with Aiden Blizzard, Sarul Kanwar and James Franklin all getting opportunities at the top of the order. Levi could bring solidity to the position if he cements his place.

MI is responsible for symonds retirement when symonds is there in DC he played all games & DC got the IPL Trophy

but when he went to MI he was there but he was not selected to play. sachin should give respect him & should have gave him chance to play. for sachin 3 are fixed pollard, malinga, blizzard, & fourth is maybe fernando, franklin or other i think sachin should feel that he has done wrong with symonds

world cricket is now lost a great legend like symonds

the main reason of andrew symonds retirement is mumbai indians are having so many international players in that they have such a great player like symonds but they have not given him such a reputation & chance to prove himself that he is one of a great player in world cricket he was there in MI for last IPL but didn't get the chance because sachin was going with malinga, pollard, blizzard, franklin or fernando. in short in my point of view is MI is the responsible

Somehow fans of other teams are worried about the inclusion 'too many' players in their sqaud. Inclusion of Levi is as a replacement of Symonds, and form oif Davy Jacobs is in doubts. Inclusion of Levi will never affect a chance of an Indian player, I guess. And MI is the only team who played an IPL match with juist 3 foreigners!

I am not sure what MI is going to do, buying so many players, they are good players, no doubt about it, but everybody will be under doubt whether they will play in the XI, and shuffling the players will end in disaster.. I am CSK supporter nd i feel that instead of a gr8 squad, you should have a gr8 team playing XI who will have confidence and assurity about their place... we can revolve players, np, but having so many players....??? All the best MI.. lets see.. anyway hoping for a 3rd title for CSK :)

Isn't this a great loss for the youngsters in Mumbai Indians team? SK Yadav who seems a very good upcoming potential and had a great hand in the CLT20 win is now out of frame.. Fast bowlers like Abu Nechim and Dhawal Kulkarni are now going to be out of frame due to Munaf and RP.. Ali Murtaza will lose out the place to Ojha.. MI was already a strong team but now they are just signing too many new stars and shaking their original team.. Apart from Sachin, Malinga, Bhajji and Pollard, none looks like steady starter.. To certain extent, Rohit..

I think this is a very good decision on MI's part. They needed an explosive opener.Blizzard wasn't contributing and Davy Jacobs gets injured easily. The only problem with decision is that they have to figure out a place for Gibbs. As for Guptill, he won;t be able to play in the IPL as he has decided to play in the English county.

  • Sakthiivel on February 28, 2012, 5:07 GMT

Best team is not about how many star players in the team. See CSK they won 3 titles but they haD star players like dhoni, Hussey. This season will be the same CSK is the best and MI,RCB will be a strong contender, RR will be a dark horses.

Rayudu could be the only non-international player in MIs first plating XI. A great team indeed, a sure shot in Semis. From semi it is anyones game. Sarul Kanwar, Suryakumar Yadav are the other promising batting talents MI have. So Rayudu and Rohit should score big to seal their place in plating XI.

horrible contract by Levi and good one for MI. he has to prove himself day by day to be in the MI's final XI. amount is not revealed. I hope it is same as what is for Andrew Symonds .Ipl auctions are always a mystery

still they will not win the cup... they dont have a leader in the locker room!

  • on February 27, 2012, 19:41 GMT

MI are like Real Madrid, CSK are like Barcelona. One buys all the players in the world, the other builds a team through an evolutionary process. CSK has won 3 trophies in their history whereas MI has won just one. That shows whose approach is better.

  • on February 27, 2012, 15:19 GMT

  • on February 27, 2012, 15:10 GMT

i dont think MI has done the smartest of things..Levi is, at this time, a one match wonder..he scored 117 in a ground in NZ which would just be about 60% of Eden Gardens in size where a top edge can go for a six..and it wil be a diff ball game in indian conditions..hope MI didnt spend a fortune to get him...

  • KOCHAR on February 27, 2012, 14:54 GMT

Terrific Buy from MI they seemed to have a terrific middle order and got an explosive opener in the form of Levi. Their bowling has been the strongest from IPL 3. I thnk the weaker teams must take a cue from MI with regards to the player selection. They are definitely also building a team for the future as well if you look at the younger players at their disposal. Terrific team selection. It also just goes to show why players want to join MI cos this statement says it all I have heard from friends that Mumbai Indians is like an extended family where the team shares a great bond and trusts youngsters, this is said by the players of not india but all foreigners as well.

  • on February 27, 2012, 14:35 GMT

For people who ask hoe Mumbai could buy so many players this season the answer is they had only 6 foreigners last season while CSK and RCB had full 10 player quota. The limit was extended to 11 this year and RCB andded Murali while CSK had no other option since they emptied their purse buying Jadeja alone. Symonds cost was $850,000 dollors so Levi must be much less than that i suppose.Karthik and Ohja came as internal trading just like many other teams have done this season.

  • on February 27, 2012, 14:33 GMT

Maybe we'll now see Gibbs+ levi opening and sachin at 3 and also sachin+levi opening and gibbs at 3.

  • on February 27, 2012, 14:31 GMT

As i said in my previous comment, not signing Samuels might be blessing in disguise for Mumbai and it proved that way. Mumbai needed foreign opener more than an all rounder. It is easy to pick two out of Pollard/Johnson/Perera/Peterson/franklin than picking one out of Gibbs/jacobs/blizzard. Jacobs is long time absentee,Blizzard's technique is not that great and Gibbs, though he had a great Big bash is struggling in BBL.He is a doubt in sub-continent.But i still doubt whether Levi is the right option. He becomes third south african opener in the team.I would prefer Trego or Tamim Iqbal or Bopara to add variety, who could play spin better. I m not sure about these 3 south african when comes to playing spin.Only time will tell.

  • AjitDJ on February 27, 2012, 14:05 GMT

What's is Mumbai Indian's strategy - buying up all good players so that they're not available for any other team? Other teams should seriously protest this as they are blocking talent and making good players sit on the bench throughout the IPL.

  • roversgate on February 27, 2012, 12:24 GMT

I don't see the point to Levi joining MI and MI using him as a replacement for Symonds. Mumbai Indians already have Tendulkar, Suman, Sharma, Blizzard, Gibbs, Tare and Jacobs who have all opened in T20 with success in the past. Levi should have been better off joining a team where he stands a realistic chance of playing every game as an opener. Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors would all have been better choices.

  • alltimegreat on February 27, 2012, 11:52 GMT

  • Sachit1979 on February 27, 2012, 11:21 GMT

Loss for Pune Warriors here. They should have grabbed Levi at any cost. Their batting order is still not good enough to compete specially in absense of Yuvraj. Also they should have preferred transfer of Ajit Agarkar instead of Dinda or James Hopes from Delhi Daredevils because he augments the batting fire power also. Dinda has no batting competency plus he is a terrible fielder. On the other hand Hopes is falling back of age. Agarkar has batting calibre plus he is very good fielder. He would definitely helped Pune in all departments.

mumbai need an gud captain .sachin is a below aerage captain and just scoring runs wont make u a captain and harbhajan has gud captaincy skills they shd trust him and giv the captaincy to him forget abt his present form !!

mumbai and rcb are south african team of ipl becoz they hav 11 best players on paper but cant deliver the title !!

similarly west indies hav great t20 players but they r not gud as an team.

i guess the reason is --> mumbai lacks an team spirit all playerds play for each other !! luk at csk for instance they have a great team spirit

i dont see tht in pollard, malinga, sachin etc who r interested in own performances.

it was quiet evident in ipl 3 finals when pollard was showing off over rayudu !!

pollard isnt an team mann !! no offence

Good move by d Mumbai Indians but it is not very profitable because Levi is not seen much comfortable against 'quality' spin so far neither in d South Africa's domestic tournament nor in Champions League T20

I think Mumbai Indians have more than two teams in the pocket. Got all foreign players but only 4 make to team. Others will be just a spectators.
