Can Ganguly inspire new dawn for Warriors?

Match facts

April 6, 2012, Mumbai
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

Big picture

When the nine captains of the IPL's fifth edition were ushered in during the opening ceremony in Chennai, Sourav Ganguly, Pune Warriors India captain, walked out wearing the franchise's new turquoise blue jersey, a change from last year's black. The team would want to erase memories of a forgettable debut season. A change of colour could bring a change of luck, as it happened to Deccan Chargers during the second season. Till recently, Warriors' participation in the IPL wasn't even certain. Their owners, the Sahara Group, pulled out on the day of the auction, and their players were in limbo, uncertain of their own future. A compromise was worked out and normal service resumed.

Ganguly takes over a team beset with injuries, and the absence of their star pick Yuvraj Singh, who's recovering from cancer. Their batting last year revolved too much around Yuvraj and Robin Uthappa. They initially won't have the services of two important overseas recruits, Michael Clarke and Angelo Mathews, who are playing Tests for their countries. They start the tournament again as underdogs.

Warriors are up against their neighbours, and tournament contenders Mumbai Indians. Even the defending champions Chennai Super Kings were no match in the IPL opener, which Mumbai Indians dominated with an all-round effort. The one concern for Mumbai Indians is the availability of Sachin Tendulkar, who had to retire hurt with a finger injury in the opening game. His captain, Harbhajan Singh, was hopeful that Tendulkar would play tomorrow.

Players to watch

As Warriors ponder their overseas combination, they will find it hard to overlook Tamim Iqbal. The stylish Bangladesh opening batsman had a dream Asia Cup. He was controversially omitted at the start of the tournament but snubbed his detractors with four fifties, including 60 in the final. The pleasure of his off-side strokes, the poise and follow-through would make his captain proud.

Pragyan Ojha had a memorable debut game for Mumbai Indians on Wednesdsay, taking the important wickets of Dwayne Bravo and Suresh Raina. He kept the runs down as well, proving why he's an effective Twenty20 bowler.

2011 head-to-head

Mumbai Indians were the winners in both matches last year. The first meeting was a low-scoring one, at Wankhede Stadium. A combined bowling effort restricted Warriors to 118. Mumbai Indians won by seven wickets, but used up all their 20 overs. In the return match at the Warriors "home" ground in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Indians set a target of 161, but Warriors fell short by 21 runs despite a fifty by Manish Pandey.

Stats and trivia

  • Mumbai Indians were one of two teams (the other being Super Kings) to win both their matches last year against Warriors

  • Warriors had the lowest economy rate (7.23) among all teams in IPL 2011 but also had the second-lowest run-rate (7.24).

    Quotes

"He is a terrific player. His strength is that he can hit the ball hard and score quickly and that is why we picked him."
Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh on Richard Levi

Why kkr lost the game? Gambir is not a great player and captain (1) why shakib not play but de Lange play 3-0-36-0 (2) in 17 over DD needed 30 more runs so why de Lange boling . Two great mistake kkr lost the game

    • DJ_Priyank on April 6, 2012, 11:31 GMT

@ Firoz If u think Indian fans should explain this then I have only one thing to say that Pune's think tank doesn't know the importance of tamim and soon they will realize they need a stable opening pair and without Tamim they can never have good opening partner-ship.

I dont think there is any instruction from BCCI not to include any players from BD. SAKIB was on the bench yesterday, KKR lose now PW did the same to TAMIM and PW will definatly lose to MI today.

See, Bangladeshis couldn't really care less about any of the IPL teams. We're rooting for PW tonight for the two Bongs in the lineup. We know Tamim probably isn't as good as Levi, but believe me, when he gets going, he gets going ;).

    • on April 6, 2012, 9:43 GMT

ITS NOT LIKE CAN GANGULY???????? ITS ONLY GANGULY CAN............. C'MMON DADI.................... ONLY U CAN.....

    • DJ_Priyank on April 6, 2012, 9:42 GMT

@ MI_Rocks_IPL: I'm NOT even a Bangladeshi or Pune or CSK (whom ur team beat on Day 1) or Pakistani fan. Yeah ur Team MI have got really World Class players, No Doubt. But don't underestimate other teams. Comparing Levi and Tamim ? Ehh ? Levi is a new-bee. We will see how he survives in Test Matches in sub-continent, till then shut your big mouth that he is better than Tamim ! MI had the best combination of players in previous IPL seasons too but they couldn't win even one. Such a shame ! U have got World's Best Batsman - Sachin. World's Best death bowler in Malinga. Most feared all-rounder in Pollard. India's highly ranked players like Rohit, Munaf, Ojha, Bhajji ! If u still can't win with these players then better Quit IPL.

    • timtom on April 6, 2012, 9:33 GMT

Tamim is gaining legendary status :) ITs time he live up to thiose standards expected of Bangladeshi fans.. For an outsider he is decent player as his stats are`nt beyond decent..

      My XI For the Game : 1. Ganguly 2. Iqbal 3. Ryder 4. Ferguson 5. Pandey 6. Utthappa 7. L.Wright 8. Rahul Sharma 9.Murli Kartik 10. A.Dinda 11. Nehra

    • timtom on April 6, 2012, 9:29 GMT

Pune is marching backwards making Ganguly as captain... The negative intensity, controversies he brings in field ,dressing room and meeting was all there to see during first 3 seasons of KKR and also the result...Moment he was replaced with Gambhir, team becomes competitive and ends up 4th.... PWI shud have a young captain like Rahul sharma.. He might be untested but the results are not going to be worse than Ganguly.... MI just had a smooth transition...PWI has not learnt any lessons....Another top ranking from bottom sealed for PWI unless there are exceptional individual performers..

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 9:24 GMT

Dont forget to add the cherry topping on the cake. Let's not forget that Sachin is playing in his home pitches today. He has learnt to play on these pitches. I have high expectations from Sachin today. SACHIN SACHIN SACHIN SACHIN ! ! ! ! !

    • MamunRash on April 6, 2012, 9:23 GMT

''MI_Rocks_IPL ''-- yes i agree tamim is ordinary player compering Bradman, shachin. But dont forget dis ordinary guy kicked on Indian Team's*** several times .. So , we should respect others then we will get respect.. nd last best of luck for MI too ..

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 9:12 GMT

considering various comments from Bangladeshis around here. I think you need you need to realise that the world is much bigger than Bangladesh. Bangladesh is only small country on the Asian Continent and we have 5 continents with people living on it. Tamim is not the end of the world. Pune has enough potential apart from Tamim to beat many other teams in IPL (except CSK, MI, RR and DD).Tamim is not going to be of any help whatsoever. His performance as compared to massive performances at IPL is just so just ordinary. Bangleshis haven't seen the class of IPL. It's a different league of world class players with some extraordinary local talents. It's not the local Bangladesh cricket that you expect Tamim to be God of cricket. In the really world out there, Sachin is the God of Cricket. Please read this comment before posting one more "Tamim is God" sort of comment.

    • satanswish on April 6, 2012, 9:10 GMT

The way Bangla fans are praising Tamim looks like Lara, Tendulkar and Ponting are average players.

    • Bruisers on April 6, 2012, 9:06 GMT

Looks like SACHIN may get rested today.. Chance for SURYAKUMAR YADAV to show his talent..

    • Sehwag_Is_Ordinary on April 6, 2012, 9:05 GMT

once again Gautam Gambhir proves why he is one of the worst captains and India did r8 to drop him from vioce captaincy. it's the duty of captain to ensure he has the right eleven, dropping sakib and playing de lange and lee together was the biggest mistake ever- WATCH out today- DADA is the best captain- he will play TAMIM today and Dada knows who to play when unlike that big ear Gambhir who's just jealous of Sakib

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 8:59 GMT

Dream team of Pune V/s. MI: Lolz:

      1) Robin Uthappa v/s. Rohit Sharama , 2) Tamim Iqbal v/s. Richard Levi, 3) Ganguly v/s. Sachin, 4) Jesse Ryder v/s. James Franklin, 5) Steven Smith v/s. Pollard, 6) Eklavya Dwivedi v/s. Dinesh Karthik, 7) Shrikant Wagh v/s. AT Rayudu, 8 Rahul Sharma vs.Harbhajan Singh, 9) Alfonso Thomas v/s. Ojha, 10 Kamran Khan / Ashish Nehra v/s. Malinga, 11 Ashok Dinda v/s. RP Singh.

There is no need for an expert to comment. Pune is not match to the power of MI...lolzz...

I think it's a one-sided match completely in favour of MI.

    • on April 6, 2012, 8:39 GMT

Best of luck to Tamim Iqbal... Hope he will continue his outstanding form & contribute to his team's triumph.

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 8:33 GMT

Comment solely for the die-hard fans of Tamim and who think his cricket is the best chance for Pune Warriors:

I think MI's one player is enough to throw him into the pit. Levi scored 50 of 35 balls, even when he wasn't is the greatest of the form. Lolzzz. Levi:Tamin means 100:20. So please don't even think that Pune Warriors have a chance to win against MI, unless Ganguly (with all due respect to his captaincy) can do something extraordinary.

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 8:26 GMT

I think all the Bangladeshi commentors will have a tough time to digest the fall of tamim khan. They are relying too much on him for the Pune warriors performance.

Guys, he is undoubtedly a good player. But he is no match to Ganguly or likes of him playing in Pune Warriors. It's a very very good team and Tamim is a part of it making the team as it looks at the present. He is just another ordinary team member required in Pune Warriors.

    • IJ-IPL on April 6, 2012, 8:05 GMT

Dream MI team to play: (A) Bat: (i) Richard Levi (ii) Sachin Tendulkar; (iii) At Rayudu

      (B) Wicketkeeper: KD Karthik

      (C) Bowlers: (i) RP Singh; (ii) P. Ojha and (iii) Lasith Malinga (iv) Harbhjan Singh (top 4 Ranking Bowlers in the IPL record 2008-2011)

      (D) Allrounder: (i) Kiren Pollard (ii) James Franklin (iii) Rohit Sharma (not an allrounder, but can be handy to bowl sometimes, just like Harbhjan can bat sometimes)

      (E) Replacement for injury: Thisara Perera (Allrounder) / T.Suman (batsman, but bowls well in T20), depending on international or domestic player requirement.

I guess if the World's Best Allrounder Shakib Al Hasan doesnt get selected for KKR then why would Tamim get selected for Pune? I hope Ganguly selects Tamim so that we Bangladeshis will actually have a reason to watch the IPL. BEST OF LUCK TAMIM!

    • Bengali-Tiger007 on April 5, 2012, 22:24 GMT

I know its only the first match of Pune, but I dont think Dada has complete power over team selection. I think Pune will also not select Tamim like KKr did today with Shakib. Tamim & Shakib's only crime is that they are guilty of being Bangladeshi's and had they been from Australia they would have been an automatic selection for any team. Well the good thing is that atleast they have been signed by their respective teams. My suggestion to Tamim & Shakib is that enjoy your time in India, atleast visit agra if you get a chance which you guys will as you both will sit out on the bench throughout the entire tournament and visit this massive shopping centre in Muminpur Kolkata (I cant remember the name) to enjoy your shopping. Anyway best of luck to Dada, make us Bengali's proud, show everyone what your made of.

Let's see if Ganguly will improve his S/R this time around. His S/R was around 100 in IPL3 with few 50s, which was his last for KKR and is not acceptable in T20. And he is 39 yrs and his fitness is always questionable. I hope this is not his last IPL, he needs to step up the gas without the great Yuvi. Time will tell what is the matter with the former India skipper in terms of his over all game. With Malinga's pace he is better off batting in the middle order and give an youngster a chance to open. Like what Gavaskar did in Champions Trophy'85. Let's see if the following saying holds true for him "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going". Jai Hind.

Pune should pick tamim in the playing 11 ... He can just take the pressure away from Ganguly ... Best of luck BOOM BOOM TAMIM ....

    • on April 5, 2012, 19:53 GMT

I dont think any team can beat Mumbai Indians, they have a problem of plenty. The likes of Munaf, RP Singh , Perera, Surya Kumar Yadav, Gibbs warming on the bench ? All these players will be in Final XI if they are playing for either Deccan/Pune/RR. The IPL organisers should also keep in mind to give chances to youngsters like surya kumar Yadav , T Suman etc , atleast MI should trade them with other franchises if they are not going to use them and provide the youngsters a good platform to prove instead of carrying the drinks.

Shakib should have played for pune or other teams who are not performing well. so that he would get more chances to play as he deserves to show his potential for the batterment of week teams. becoz he knows how to deal that situation.

I wish you all the best Tamim, and pray for your continuous success in IPL.
