Mumbai Indians v Rajasthan Royals, IPL, Mumbai April 10, 2012

Will Royals extend their run away from home?

Match facts

Wednesday, April 11, Mumbai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

IPL 2012 has produced largely one-sided games in its first week, with Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers contriving to produce a close finish on Monday in Visakhapatnam. When as many as 18 runs are needed off the final over, though, the fielding side usually ends up victorious, but the pressure got to the bowler Daniel Christian instead of the batsman Rohit Sharma.

Rohit's last-ball six masked the fact that Mumbai Indians almost messed up a modest chase of 139 after failing to chase 130 earlier against Pune Warriors India. Sachin Tendulkar's absence is clearly being felt at the top of the order. Mumbai Indians have tried Ambati Rayudu and T Suman to partner Richard Levi upfront but both combinations haven't clicked. Their strong bowling attack, though, has delivered in all three games so far.

It will be interesting to see what kind of surface greets Rajasthan Royals tomorrow. If the Wankhede pitch assists spin as much as it did during the game against Warriors, Royals' attack consisting of medium-pacers and spinners will be difficult to get away. Royals have won both their games comfortably so far. Their captain Rahul Dravid has been at pains to point out that though the victories have come at home in Jaipur, they haven't been achieved on the slow and low surfaces that became synonymous with the city during the first four seasons of the IPL. How will Royals fare in their first away match of the season?

Players to watch

The last time Royals played against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Ajinkya Rahane did not get to bat in a ten-wicket win for his side. An orthodox batsman, he missed out on a Twenty20 century by two runs against Kings XI Punjab and was run out for a duck against Kolkata Knight Riders. He will be up against his former franchise tomorrow at his home ground.

Harbhajan Singh may have led Mumbai Indians to the Champions League Twenty20 title, but his ugly argument with umpire Johan Cloete during the game against Chargers was unbecoming of a captain. Instead of trying to control the outbursts of the bowler Munaf Patel, Harbhajan went a step ahead and had a prolonged argument with Cloete, almost forcing the official to refer the appeal against Kumar Sangakkara to the third umpire. Harbhajan got away with just a warning and a reprimand but his behaviour should be under scrutiny tomorrow.

2011 head-to-head

Royals beat Mumbai Indians in both meetings last season, bettering their seven-wicket win at home with a ten-wicket thrashing away.

Stats and trivia

  • Not only is Lasith Malinga the leading wicket-taker in the IPL, he also has the third-best economy-rate, 6.28

  • Royals have a win-loss ratio of 2.83 at home, by far the best for IPL teams.

Quotes

"It's obviously been quite hectic, going up and down and playing our fourth game in eight days. But the guys are being taken care of by the support staff."
Richard Levi is getting used to the travel schedules of the IPL

"Rahul is a bit calmer than Warnie, [who] is a bit more out there and tries probably a lot more things on the field. But I think Rahul is good for young players. He is nice and calm on the field and that rubs off on all the other guys."
Johan Botha on the Royals captain and his predecessor

Mumbai's bowling is good but Rajastan Royals are in good touch remaining unbeaten in IPL 5. I guess Dravid made a wrong decision because Mumbai can defend any score as they are the best in bowling. But who knows whats going to happen?? Best of luck to both. The team that plays better win

Hope Royals continue their winning form. I am wishing for another fine opening partnership from Rahane and Dravid. With not so many stars in their lineup it is incredible the way Rajasthan Royals has performed right from the start of IPL - First season. Rahul has shown until now that he can continue from where Shane has left..

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 11:53 GMT

I agree with Jindal Priyank, If still MI can't win..I think they better quit. It sounds such a convincing team. but the performance is really bad.

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 11:50 GMT

mukesh.agarwal17 @ that website sounds interest. Btw you are right without Sachin the team looks really weak. MI needs to buy a strong Indian opener very soon before Sachin retires. We anyways need a strong Indian opener with Sachin. It's time we start hunting now...any potential players to play for MI ? Can we buy from any team ? I doubt anyone would be as dumb as DC to sell of their strike bowler. I think we should TRY to take Gautam Gambhir from KKR (he is not performing there) or anyone else ?

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 11:41 GMT

I agree with andrew27994. But where is Perrera ? Is back in Sri Lanka or is he with the MI team ? No clue ? Cant see Perrera or Peterson ? I don't understand. No news about him either ? Does anyone have any clue ?

---- And yes, RR is a very very strong team. IT's going to be a tough ask for MI to beat RR. But I hope MI can do it soomthly. RR is progressing at a good rate in this IPL series. We need to break that run or RR will become unbeatable.

  • andrew27994 on April 11, 2012, 10:30 GMT

I think MI should promote Karthik at the top of the order(probably at No.3). He is a much better batsman than what he has shown and he could be useful in anchoring the innings. If MI get a good start in their first 7-8 overs then they should promote Pollard up the order as he is the man in form and he can be very destructive once he is set. He should get the opportunity to get himself set and then cash in towards the death overs. I have no problem with the bowlers or fielders. Personally I think Harbhajan has been exceptional with his field placements.

This is T 20 where game changes every over ! CSK, MI, KKR n RCB r all high-profile teams having big players and celebs ! Obviously they get much attention mainly due to presence of some good SERIOUS players ! And this fact sometimes works as blessing in disguise for MINNOWS ! :) No1 is expecting RR, DD, DC, Pune and Punjab to win the title and this might work in their favor ! No pressure at all !

  • on April 11, 2012, 9:44 GMT

MI have simply the World's Best Batsman in - Apna Sachin ! the best death-overs bowler - Malinga ! The most feared all-rounder - Pollard ! The Best local talent in Rohit Shrama, Munaf patel, Bhajji, Dinesh Karthik, Ojha, Rayudu ! Certainly the most balanced side ...What else u want ? If still MI doesn't win IPL, better quit playing :P !!

yes RR will win,by looking at the performance i think so that Royals will win.

  • on April 11, 2012, 8:13 GMT

I saw either in an article or in comments that Dravid is not a good Captain. Too conservative was the verdict. All I can say is, even if it is early days yet, he is one of the most cerebral players and will show why he is really good. RR will reach the finals. Others are too busy with their commercials!

  • Bimalkill2u on April 11, 2012, 8:10 GMT

Rajasthan going to make it 3 out 3. We want Dravid to take IPL5 trophy. Long Live Wall.

  • on April 11, 2012, 8:07 GMT

Thisara Pererera should be give the chance no point of playing Richard Levi he can't play the straight ball and play one indian as an opener either surayakumar yadav or some indian guy and they should give thisara perera a chance they don't have a good hitter of the ball rather than pollard and rohit even karthik cannot hit the ball hard!!! they almost used all their quota of 20 ovs to chase 140 odd which is interesting and they might have lost the match needing 18 runs in the last over if Christian wouldn't have been their So what they need is a good finisher like thisara he can hit the ball good 100m... Even pollard doesn't strike the ball well against seamers and thisara can be great where if he gets the ball in to his hand he is capable of hitting 145+ and hitting the deck extremely hard ....and also is a speedy fielder and have a strong arm which can directly throw to the wicket from even 130m.... So Mi need to reconsider their team otherwise their batting looks really odd for me.

  • on April 11, 2012, 7:51 GMT

guys,r u sure perera is fit to play? i think he is injured and and he is not even with mumbai indians right now..both perera and mathews arent recovered from injury.. but i feel robin sing is total useless..he persists with palyers who r not performing..he did it with satish and now hes is doing with rayudu..i feel instead of rayudu, some young players should be given chance and they should rotate their batting order like other teams..they did a blunder of sending two out of form bats men-rayudu and rohit at the same time..tats the reason the run chase got messed up..tey should have sent dinesh karthik higher up the order and also pollard should also be sent earlier...if perera is fit,he should be played instead of levi r franklin...but on the whole robin sing sucks

  • isurufdo247 on April 11, 2012, 7:13 GMT

MI had a lot f foreign fans out side india.bt wit da disgraceful event happend in da last match they lost most f them..........

  • raks_pace on April 11, 2012, 7:09 GMT

RR should include Dinesh Chandimal, He is a good wicket keeper and agressive batsman. They can include S Binny who is allrounder in place of Goswami the keeper. Binny had a terrific Ranji season 2011-12, he can give value add with both ball and bat. The line-up should be: 1.Rahane 2.Dravid 3. Botha 4. Chandimal 5.Hodge 6.Menaria 7.Binny 8.Cooper 9. Chavan 10. A Singh 11. Trivedi/Sreesanth/Fallah

  • on April 11, 2012, 7:06 GMT

    pollard must come at no.4

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 7:03 GMT

Bring on Perrera instead of Levi atleast. We need another all-rounder before the RR. Its a very strong team with strong local talent as well. We need as many all-rounders and performers as possible. Thats the only way MI will have any hope in the match.

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 7:00 GMT

If MI is the strategy of RR, then they need to include more All-rounders in the team, that's what I think MI is lacking: We should atleast play with 7 all-rounders in the team: (i) Pollard (obvious) (ii) Franklin (iii) Rohit Sharma (he can bowl sometimes) (iv) Perrera (v) T. Suman, (vi) Harbhajan Singh (can bat sometimes) (vii) Peterson (has batted very well in the past). Remaining places can be filled up by (viii) Tendulkar (ix) Ojha (x) Munaf patel/RP Singh(xi) D. Karthik. This is just hypothetical: I doubt MI will choose 7 all-rounders. It would mean that they would have to leave out Malinga (which is not possible, he is the best). However, I think it is a very good winning idea to atleast play 6 all rounders and include Malinga instead. If you saw the KKR match yesterday, they played the match with 9 batsmen. It got them the score (though they could have gone higher). I think it's worth a try.

NEW Dream MI team to play: (A) Bat: (i) Sachin Tendulkar; (ii) At Rayudu (B) Wicketkeeper: KD Karthik (C) Bowlers: (i) RP Singh; (ii) P. Ojha and (iii) Lasith Malinga (iv) Munaf Patel (top 4 Ranking Bowlers in the IPL record 2008-2011) (D) Allrounder: (i) Kiren Pollard (ii) James Franklin (iii) Perrera (iv) Harbhajan Singh (iii) Rohit Sharma (not an allrounder, but can be handy to bowl sometimes, just like Harbhjan can bat sometimes) (E) Replacement for injury: Richard Levi (Batsman) / T.Suman (batsman, but bowls well in T20), depending on international or domestic player requirement. I think MI will give a tough fight to RR if they play with the above team. RR is an excellent side. This match will be very close, i suppose ?

  • karunak on April 11, 2012, 6:21 GMT

MI using their big ticket Pollard in a wrong place. They should use him in top order to increase run rate.

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 6:00 GMT

My question, please answer to this, if anyone can: why is MI not playing the 5 top bowlers of the entire IPL season together (check the IPL all season records): 1. Malinga, 2. RP Sing 3. Ojha 4. Harbhajan Singh 5. Munaf Patel and 6. Pollard (in this line up we have Pollard and Harbhajan who can bat as well). Remaining you can two strong foreign batsmen or 2 foreign All-rounder's like Perrera and Franklin. The teams batting line up goes really strong and the bowling becomes unbeatable. I think MI should play with these 6 players for sure. Specially looking at the hard-hitting batting line up of RR. What do you think ?

  • IJ-IPL on April 11, 2012, 5:57 GMT

I think, this will be a fair game. Both sides have their own advantages and disadvantages. I support MI ofcourse. But RR has some amazing talent and have played better than MI always. I guess if MI struggles hard, there is a possibility of winning. MI has very big name but zero performance. It is very difficult to digest that despite such big names playing in the final XI, the team still fails to score 140 in 15 overs. it still requires the entire 20 overs. Just have a look at statistics of these big names in the XI: Richard Levi, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit sharma, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Ojha, Harbhajan and RP Singh....despite these players we are still in difficulty. This is a shame. and these players need to buckle up fast or we will be out of the tournament soon.

  • PointFielder on April 11, 2012, 4:18 GMT

The wicket is expected to assist the spinners. Royals have botha whereas Mumbai have Harby as frontline spinner. I reckon Botha is due for some performance. Hopefully Rahul will let Botha bat higher in the batting order like he did in last IPL.

  • isurufdo247 on April 11, 2012, 4:01 GMT

  • snagr on April 11, 2012, 3:53 GMT

@ Cpt. Meanster - you call a team one dimensional when you yourself are one dimensional. You are only think about batting or bowling and are forgetting the importance of a good fielder and an allrounder who can smack the ball above the fence at will. Yes, he can and he has done it before, therefore Kieron Pollard is not over hyped! For example in the previous game itself, although he did not finish it, his sixes were a lot of help for mumbai. Also, his bowling was pretty good , for example in the last match he took 2 wickets and 2 catches, can Gibbs or Davy Jacobs do that?Gibbs is coming out of a poor BPL and is not an allrounder. Furthermore, age is not on his side. Therefore he cannot be a better fit than pollard is. As for the same team analysis of yours. MI have played 3 matches this season and you have already said that they play with the same team all the time. Even 2-3 changes per match are a lot i believe, you cant play a different 11 every match. & MI have made these changes !

  • kv_aneesh on April 11, 2012, 3:50 GMT

@Cpt.Meanster You must be the biggest fan of Royals otherwise you won't say to remove Kieron Pollard.

I think Mckay is not available as he is part of Australian T20 and One day squad of WI tour. Is Thisara available? Levi may get another chance today , else Blizard may replace him. It is good to play Blizard as the fourth overseas player and get Suryakumar Yadav at the middle order

Mumbai doesn't need Clint McKay. It's batting that needs to be sorted out.

I hope sachin plays tommorow or else mumbai will again have the problems at the top of the order. A big plus point is that he also guides Levi through out the innings!

Mumbai WILL lose this game. They are a one dimensional team with a limited approach. They never change their team according to the conditions. They are dependent on OVER HYPED Kieron Pollard and James Franklin. They should play Davy Jacobs and Herschel Gibbs instead. Also, they need to bring in Clint Mckay as the fourth overseas player to partner Lasith Malinga. Rpyals are gonna win. They are the dark horses this season. Best of luck to Rahul and his boys.

I think Mckay is not available as he is part of Australian T20 and One day squad of WI tour. Is Thisara available? Levi may get another chance today , else Blizard may replace him. It is good to play Blizard as the fourth overseas player and get Suryakumar Yadav at the middle order

@Cpt.Meanster You must be the biggest fan of Royals otherwise you won't say to remove Kieron Pollard.
