The game was effectively over when the players walked off for the innings break. Ajinkya Rahane's blistering, unbeaten 103 brought up the first century of IPL 2012, propelling Rajasthan Royals to 195 against an already battered Royal Challengers Bangalore. Assisted by Owais Shah's equally intimidating 60, the Royals piled on a score way beyond reach for the hosts and such was the dominance that the chase turned out to be a tepid affair.

Rahane also smashed six consecutive fours off an over - the first in Twenty20 history, S Aravind being the unfortunate bowler. Rahane and Shah - ten years apart - didn't just deliver for the team's cause but also nudged their respective national team selectors ahead of the World Twenty20, each getting two big scores so far this IPL. Their bowlers - led by Siddharth Trivedi - backed them up, hitting their targets like efficient salesmen, getting six batsmen bowled.

Ironically, the losing side had the bigger names. With the likes of Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan and Zaheer Khan to contend with, it appeared as if the Royals worked to the plan of exploiting the less-experienced Indian bowlers. It was an extension of Royal Challengers' affliction from the match against Chennai Super Kings, when Virat Kohli leaked 28 off the penultimate over of the game.

At one stage, Aravind conceded 48 off three overs, almost the same number given away by Zaheer, Vettori and Murali off ten combined overs. A less-than-fit Chris Gayle, recovering from a groin injury, came on in the 16th over more as an act of desperation by Vettori and didn't fare any better than the other weak links, leaking 21.

The hammering Rahane dished out was reminiscent of Brendon McCullum's butchering at the same venue in the IPL's opening game in 2008. He began by splitting the gap past cover and backward point for two fours off Aravind in the second over. The onslaught that followed was so brutal that it's easy to forget Zaheer bowled a maiden over to Rahane, the third of the innings. Rahane showed no such respect for Aravind the following over, taking 15 off it, including a massive hit over long-on.

Vettori and Murali then pulled things back with five relatively quiet overs, going for 23. Vettori's spell only widened the gap between him and the rest. He varied his pace and flight, fired in the quicker ones to keep the batsmen guessing.

Rahane's merciless approach was best illustrated in the 14th over, which produced six fours. He drove Aravind forcefully down the ground off the first two balls, scooped the third to fine leg, pulled the fourth to midwicket, drove the fifth past cover and delicately dabbed the six to third man. Aravind varied his pace and length, AB de Villiers came up to the stumps but nothing deterred Rahane.

Shah began his party with a top-edged six over long leg, before ripping into Gayle. Vinay Kumar aimed for the blockhole, but somehow Shah found a way to get under the bounce and slam sixes down the ground. He brought up his fifty off just 19 balls before launching into Murali. He tried the same against a slower Zaheer delivery but was caught at long-on.

At the other end, Rahane started the final over needing seven for his century and he required just three balls to get there. After driving Vinay past mid-off, he flat-batted the third ball just past long-on's grasp to bring up the landmark. The Royals hammered 113 off the last seven overs, the third-best in IPL history.

Royal Challengers began the chase in enterprising manner, with Mayank Agarwal pulling the first ball for six over fine leg. But a double-strike by Pankaj Singh in the fifth over derailed the chase and took the fight out of the hosts. Agarwal was caught off a top-edge and two balls later, Gayle dragged one onto his stumps.

That followed a period of prolonged struggle for Royal Challengers, stumbling against the asking rate, compounded by the steady fall of wickets. The boundary drought lasted an unforgivable 37 deliveries and that was thanks largely to Trivedi's nagging line and slower deliveries bowled from back of a length, assisted by the slow pitch. De Villiers played on to one that kept low, Kohli and Saurabh perished swinging across the line, before Vettori lost his leg stump giving the bowler the charge. Trivedi's 4 for 23 was his personal best in the IPL and the combined efforts launched the Royals to the top of the table.

the test team will look something like this after SRT-VVS era ends - Gambhir/Rahane/Kohli/Sehwag/Rohit/Pujara/Saha/Harbhajan/Rahul Sharma/Yadav/Aaron with Gambhir leading the test team....we will have a third seamer in form of Dinda for tests played outside India. the ODI team will be Gambhir/Sehwag/Rahane/Kohli(c)/Yuvraj/Rohit/Dhoni/Irfan/Yadav/Aaron/Rahul Sharma with Manoj Tiwary/Dinda/Ojha in reserves.

I think Shah should be in Englands 20 20 world cup squad. He has experience in playing in the sub continent. He hits all around the ground and is in good form. In terms of the longer forms of the game I think he has passed it. Particulary in Test matches. For the Royals..they should play

Dravid Rahane Shah Hodge Goswami(wkt) Meneria Faiz Fazal Nayan Doshi Hogg Tait Sreesanth

Trevedi bowled well in the last match but often out of the attack who gets hit for more runs than the rest. Tait and sreesanth come into the side as even though they might get hit for a few runs they are genuine wicket takers which the Royals lacked against the Mumbai Indians. Doshi comes in to the side as he is a left arm bowler who would complement Hogg and who has a decent record at 20 20 level. Hodge and shah stay in the top 4 as you need your best batsmen to be given the best opportunity to bat.Hodge stays in because of his top batting at this level and his ability to bowl tidy off-spin.

For upcoming T20 Worldcup: Rahane, Shehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Dhoni, Raina (batsmen) Jadeja/Irfan (alrounders) R Sharma/Ashwin(spinners) Zak/U Yadav/Dinda(bowlers) Uthappa/R Sharma (reserve batsmen)... Same team as someone suggested above but Yuvi may not have recovered by that time + Kohli is in awesome form and cannot be ignored. For Ashwin ,I would suggest Harbhajan for T20's only (not for ODI and tests).Rest team is awesome with right blend of players who can build an innings at run a ball + big hitters.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 19:54 GMT)

If players like Rahane, Tiwary, RohitSharma, Pujara make Kohli's determination and hardworking ethics then Indian batting can be more awesome compared SRT,RD,Ganguly,VVS era. Batting in a years time after Sachin should like this Gambhir,RohitSharma,Kohli,Rahane,Pujara,Tiwary(reserve) +Wicketkeeper + 3 bowlers atleast in test matches

Posted by Guernica on (April 16, 2012, 15:54 GMT)

He was overshadowed slightly in this game but Owais Shah has been in phenomenal T20 form of late. From the big bash league to here - just amazingly consistent. The England management is a stubborn bunch, but surely they should try and get him in the world cup squad.

Should be given a chance in the national squad...

@ Aniruddha Shidhaye, if your hero got there o talent then Rahane should be there as well with pure talent. Its your hero who is clinging on to the team with past records for the sake of records not for the team. He was never a team man and no one doubt about it. If you still need his services, ask him to coach your kids. We need to think about future team India. We do not want to see a future team India with 11 record chasing players. We need good role models who are ready to do anything for team, not clinging to open in ODI but not in tests even when there are no openrs.

Posted by Farce-Follower on (April 16, 2012, 12:29 GMT)

@ Aniruddha Shidhaye - I agree. SRT needs to play till he is 60, since he is a 'legend' and no one has the right to tell him when to retire. Rahane can meanwhile strut his stuff till IPL 2030.

Although I don't see it mentioned here or on this list,, this list does suggest that Owais Shah's 19-ball fifty surely equalled the second-quickest fifty in IPL history. I also don't see what Shah did mentioned widely in the Britiish media. There seems to be no mention of it on the BBC's web site; indeed the only IPL-related matter on the BBC web site seems to be some speculation about whether playing in it will make Kevin Pietersen a better player. All of this is ironic given KP's well-publicised recent grumbles about lack of publicity in Britain for the IPL. It seems to demonstrate that while the British media is so insular that it truly doesn't recognise the IPL - not even notable achievements therein by players such as Shah and Mascharenas (each of whom is in truth more English than KP) - KP personally literally doesn't need to do anything to appear all over the headlines in the British media.

Rahane deseves all the kudos for yesterday's innings ,he is a class player and deserves to be in Indian team in all 3 formats sooner than later.Right now in this IPL he seems to be the best batsmen among Indians all the other limited over specialists are kind of struggling .Very dissapointed with likes of Sarubh Tiwary who are not making most of his chances, hoping Manish Pandey gets a game for Pune and bats higher.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

Farce Follower- If we compare Rahane's record to that of the great In your words"record chasing" nam, Sachin tendulkar, then Rahane will be 'zero' against The gr8 SRT. We did not tell him when to debut. he got on pure talent. so, it is unfiar that we tell him when to retire. I like Rahane and agree that he should get a place in the national team but not at the cost of the great SRT. You can givve Raina's place to him.

SHOT OF THE MATCH - Insideout sixer from RAHANE - against Veteran MURALI, very clean strike for a flat six!!!.......

Watching a player's shot - we can determine he's in his BEST!!!.... Kholi in Hobart!! Sachin @ Sharjah & i witness the same from Rahane/shah @ Bangalore!!...

Kohli is over-hyped by Ray Jennings and the media. What has he delivered so far? And it is pathetic to see the likes of Saurabh Tiwari. The way he shapes to hit, or for that matter his running....Terrible. Cut out the butter and ghee, buddy. Start working out.

Posted by Farce-Follower on (April 16, 2012, 7:12 GMT)

Rahane should be opening in ODIs. But a certain record chaser from his own city is still clinging on to that position.

Posted by eagleonmove on (April 16, 2012, 7:09 GMT)

Rahane should be given seat in Indian National team.. Good temperament, excellent skills and above all sheer cool and clean aggressive hitting with no show offs.. Rohit Sharma and Raina will have to do a lot better to save their spots in Indian team.

Would love to see Sehwag, Gambhir,Yuvi, Virat, and Rahane playing together in t20 WC. You can expect many records breaking apart with these five in Top n Middle order.

Posted by eagleonmove on (April 16, 2012, 6:56 GMT)

Great Clean hitting by Rahane and Shah.. Truly mesmerising. Rahane's shot's were all pure cricket shots with only one exception.. Even the legends of the game would appreciate thisl kind of hitting in his innings. Rahane matched Virats' clean hitting in last Tri series at Aus, in the match against SL. Would love to see Virat and Rahane together at the crease in the next T20 world cup. RR is certainly better composed this year. Wish they continue the same way and make tournament more interesting. Good game RR.. Hats off to Rahane n Shah.. Best wishes to RR, for the next match.

Sreesanth inclusion will give RR an experience in the bowling deprtment , dn't forget that he was the 2nd most wicket taker in the 1st IPL season.Menaria can be used as another left arm spin option along with Botha and batting Botha Should be used as finisher.

Really good knocks from Rahane/Shah.. And want to highlight this for sure.. With due respect to Dravid and his batting abilities, he should do away with T20 cricket.. Yesterday was a big example of that.. After 10 overs he had faced 30 balls and scored 25 or so.. if not for Rahane/Shah, RR would have lost this match and such performances do not happen regularly.. So Dravid has to raise his game or call it quits.. I again say, he is a brilliant and one of the best but not fit for T20..

i have been writing in many forums numerous times that the indian batting pool should comprise of: gambhir, sehwag, badri, mukund, rahane, rohit sharma, kohli, pujara. D Karthik in place of Dhoni, whenever the game is played outside flat track. Sachin can play until he wants to retire. This should be the core of indian batting for the next 2 / 3 years at least. These bunch of players should be tried persistently for the next 2 / 3 years, and should not be dropped for just 1 series failure, they can be dropped from the playing X1 depending on their current form, but not from the team.

Even though I support RCB, I was happy when Rahane scored the 100. The kid has the quality to be world class. Ideally, he should come at No.3 (since he began his career as an opener), Virat at No.4 and Rohit at No.5 in our test team. Sachin should at least do some voluntary sacrifice and get himself at No.6. Mukund can be our Reserve opener and Pujara our reserve middle order batsman. I don't care if India loses a few more test series. At least we need foresight and vision and stick to these guys for at least 15 test matches (which we had been lacking since we included Raina in the test team). People who are good at ODI's may not be good at test matches. Raina is an obvious giveaway. I doubt even Manoj Tiwary in test matches away from home. At home, I think he (Tiwary) can be our second reserve middle order batsmen after Pujara.

He can average mid 60s in domestic cricket. Score lots of centuries in T20 but he will still have to wait till till fat out of shape Sehwag, Laxman, selfish dulkar and incompetent Gambhir to amass a lot more records.

Posted by csowmi7 on (April 16, 2012, 4:22 GMT)

Rahane needs to be part of india's test team. but it looks like he wont get the chance. Rohit Sharma will be preferred for Dravid and Gambhir and Sewag will open again. This guy has a first class average of 68 and has done well in whatever chances he has got for India against England scoring a 90 in one match. Rahane needs to be part of the test team where he can be groomed by Tendulkar to become the next Indian stalwart.

Hats off to Shilpa Shetty. She is smarter than Srinivasan, Mallya & others for spotting great talent at rock bottom rate. Ultimately, only a real cricketer can deliver at T-20 and not the chin waggers who can only talk cricket.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 16, 2012, 4:05 GMT)

What a fine player! And a player like him is not in the Indian team(as an opener), thanks to the presence of a statistic chasing guy who plans to play on and on and on...

Posted by rohan024 on (April 16, 2012, 3:53 GMT)

Partly because of dip in Tkar's popularity primarily for his selfish behaviour over the last 12 months, and partly bcoz of huge increase in Dravid's popularity after his graceful retirement, RR is like the favorite team of most people i know..second on the list of popularity is Pune Warriors...These r the 2 teams, which don't have any star cricketer of today, but are doing well on the basis of sheer hard work and good planning..The icing on the cake would be if both these teams reach semis..

Posted by satanswish on (April 16, 2012, 3:44 GMT)

Rahane scored heavily in domestic cricket & earned his place in Indian squad by all hard work. But Dhoni has consistently ignored this talented player for his much deserved opportunities. Dhoni always preferred mediocre players from his CSK team like Vijay, Jadeja, Raina, Ashwin etc. Rahane should have been given opportunity in Test series down under but Dhoni preferred Kohli to Rahane. Ajinakya Rahane is the future of Indian team & deserve permanent place in Team India.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 3:28 GMT)

If Rahane can do this, he can be the replacement for Shewag. Rahane, Kohli, Rohit, Raina with Gambhir and Shewag are the most likely ones to take over from the seniors. But this is nothing - the real test will come when India travels abroad to Eng, Aus, NZ, WI, SA, Sl and maybe Pak. All the best Rahane.

rahane was all class yesterday....small in physique,..he reminds me of sachin of old...technique and power in one package...way 2 go man.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 3:01 GMT)

I dont think he should be in World T20 straight away where the quality of bowlers are better and an failed onslaught against them will do his confidence no good. With the huge amount of ODIs India are playing, he should get a chance there. This way he can build an innings against good bowlers and also can try to be aggressive when needed. It will be nice build up for his 2015 and Test future.

Posted by Bruisers on (April 16, 2012, 2:45 GMT)

People are blaming VINAY KUMAR for no reason. It was just a brilliant batting display against which no bowler was able to survive. So expecting Vinay to bowl a tight over at the end is ridiculously pathetic.

Posted by kunderanengineer on (April 16, 2012, 2:32 GMT)

Although it's still in its early stages, this IPL season seems to be sending some very clear messages : 1. Ajinkya Rahane can no longer be ignored by the Indian selectors. This young man not only has the discipline it takes to be an opener but has the uncanny ability to combine power with finesse. He's a sheer delight to watch when he's in the zone. 2. England should take a long hard look at Owais Shah for the World 20/20s. if they are serious about winning the tournament. 3. Rajasthan Royals are showing that you can win without a lineup filled with household names. They got rid of Ross Taylor's salary and in his place obtained Keevon Cooper, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah, all of whom have contributed handsomely to the Royals' success so far.You then add names like Trivedi and Pankaj along with the experienced and established Dravid and you get the feeling that management seems to know very well what they're doing.

Posted by Sen_San on (April 16, 2012, 2:27 GMT)

RCB missted a trick by taking Dravid's wicket in the 11th over :-) .. Owais Shah completely changed the momentum with Rahane.. What lusty hittings! That partnership was a treat to watch.. Rahane can replace inconsistent Sehwag in Indian team.. Royals & Warriors could be the surprise elements in this IPL season.. RCB looked very strong at the start of the season, but now, it looks like it's batting ends with the top 4.. Dilshan should replace vettori to add depth and he or Kohli should become captain.. The more this decision is delayed, the less the chances of RCB to make it to semi-finals..

Posted by avinash200j on (April 16, 2012, 2:21 GMT)

A near perfect win for RR there. Dravid should score at a better rate if RR has any chances of making the semis. He was very slow yesterday.

Posted by CRICFAN_007 on (April 16, 2012, 2:04 GMT)

What RAHANE has shown the world is that batsmen need not take the areal root to make big scores, rather perfection in timing is necessary.....!!! GOOD that we will have a good full strength in the T20 world cup squad.....:) RCBs bowling in vulnerable and the batting gets the pressure of the kind of bowling attack... on or two bowlers in the side give toooooo many runs... And that is hurting RCB.. COMMON RCB U CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

Posted by Romenevans on (April 16, 2012, 1:54 GMT)

It was an absolute Carnage. I have no idea why Rahane was dropped from the team after doing so well against England, and then they replaced him with Manoj Tivari and Rohit Sharma? Would you believe it? Owais Shah was brilliant too, loved this RR team. Full of talent, so down to earth and delivers under pressure.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 1:54 GMT)

First class ave of 68.+ still not in test team. But this ton will get there. The weird indian selectors pick test players from IPL. Otherwise how on earth Rainas in contention for test team

Posted by   on (April 16, 2012, 1:52 GMT)

He performed well in the England series also... One person who is blocking his place in the Indian squad is Sachin... Atleast now he shd think of retiring so that more deserving players like rahane can shine at international level..

Posted by VJGS on (April 16, 2012, 1:28 GMT)

A prime example of how much the RCB batting is dependent on the Gayle-storm. If he is out of form, RCB is out of competition. But, hats off to Rahane. Hope he makes it to the national squad!!!

Posted by maddinson on (April 16, 2012, 1:23 GMT)

I don't know why Royals are wasting Hodge down the order when some one like Dravid who is a non performing player in this format. Dravid played awfully in this match, if he batted any further RR could not even passed 150. Local bowlers are just pathetic, some one like Vinay and Arvind shows that there must be some non cricketing reasons for them to get play (or in the squad) for Indian international team or seriouslly there are not many international standard bowlers in such a big country.

Any was Cheers for Rahane, very good inning on a very high scoring ground.

Posted by bvnathan on (April 15, 2012, 21:43 GMT)

Rahane has definitely shown more consistency and hunger for runs in all the matches played by RR this season. Rahane keep up the GOOD WORK!!! He has shown immense potential at the top order and I have no doubt that he will continue to show his good form in the rest of the RR matches. It is obvious that his name should prominently figure in the Indian team selected to play in World T-20 championship in 2012.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2012, 21:37 GMT)

India may just have found their successor to Rahul Dravid and he bats at the opposite end to him. Purists may knock this as a T20 effort but the class Rahane displayed playing pure cricketing shots that would also serv him well in test cricket. Not once did he resort to wild slogging. It was superb inns & as an Indian fan a pure joy & heartening to watch. Rahane for India!

@Dravid_Gravitas - Tait is pretty much useless. He is very wayward and very uneconomical. Occasionally, he gets a good wkt. Not worth one of the four berths for foriegn players. Watson will probably replace hodge, since botha as a spinner is very much required for his tight bowling. Watson will probably get hit as a bowler, but will work as an all rounder. So, four international players would be - owais shah, Shane watson, Brag Hogg, Johan Botha/Kevon Cooper. Tait and Hodge will have to sit it out.

Vow! What a batting performance. He is such a clean hitter of the ball. Agreed some of the bowling that he faces is mediocore but still this kid has talent. One can only wonder if he will ever get a chance to pplay for India. Sachin u need to retire to give young talents like Rahane to carry the torch for india. I want him to see play test cricket to assess his temparament. Batting with the Wall will definitely help him mature into a great cricketer and human being.

I just hope that all the Bangladeshis who were bad mouthing Sunil Narine in his first match can now understand why he is worth so much. Most of you were annoyed because Shakib was left out in the first match for KKR BUT YOU MUST UNDERSTAND ITS A TEAM GAME,in any case Narine is going to be a great talent for the Windies for some years to come, some of the best batsmen cant figure what he is bowling and he makes them look foolish. His IPL price will go to 2 million in 2013,it could even be more.

Sreesanth somehow doesn't seem like a good 'fit' in the humble, down to earth, workmen type Royals team. The team has consistently punched above its weight and I don't think that an overzealous, 'will bowl 1 good ball in 45 overs and boast about it for next 45 matches' Sreesanth is needed.

Well looking at the glimpse of scorecard no one can ever imagine that 3rd over by Zaheer khan was a maiden and Rahane was on strike . Honestly i was expecting less than 140 by rajasthan royals but hats off to rahane and Owais shah they took the score near 200

Its inexplicable how players like Vinay Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja made it into the Indian side. So very overrated.....Rahane, Pujara and Manoj Tiwari deserve to play.

congratulation well come indian cricket team..........

what a batting performance we have witnessed from Rahane and Shah... awsome hitting

Posted by   on (April 15, 2012, 18:50 GMT)

vinay kumar in death over!!!! LOL!!! if he is one of the top pace bowlers in India... then India definitely is in drought of pace bowlers!!!!

Posted by   on (April 15, 2012, 18:38 GMT)

Rahane needs to play for India. He is way more disciplined and consistent than the other players.. Look at the oppurtunities that rohit sharma and raina have received. If rahane gets even half those chances, he will make it big..

Owais being sent up the order is the master-stroke. Once Watson comes, you can replace Botha with him. Also you can bring in Tait in place of Hodge. RR at some point will need a little bit more strength in their bowling department and that's when Tait will have a huge role cut out for him.

Wow! Rahane is something. Clean copy book hitting. Fantastic lad. Future of Indian batting in safe hands. Sad thing is that we are still addresssing him as future of Indian batting when he should have been the present of Indian batting for at least an year now! What a shame!

Does selectors need anymore proof how useless Vinay Kumar is? Pankaj Singh was bowling much better with pace, bounce and swing. Only variation that Vinay kumar knows is slower ball. Pathetic. That's why I like RR they give chance to fringe players who wants to perform and show their capability. If RR stays in top 5 for their first 9 games they have high chance to move to SF as after that Shane watson will join the team and strenthen them further.

Rahane MUST play in team India following this IPL. Useless players like Gambir, and Ravindra Jadeja have to be kicked out of the team. Rahane is also a very good test player. So he should be a permanent fixture in all 3 formats for India. Also, we need to give more attention to some quality Indian bowlers in this IPL. Players like Harmeet Singh and Iqbal Abdulla should play for India in 50 overs cricket. We are nation abundant in riches and still our team seems POOR.

good batting by Shah And Rahane....RR's are good in the batting side , but the bowling dept is par below than standards. Where is Sreesanth....bring him back to strengthen the bowling department.

Rahane should be given chance in India ODI and T20 team. Look at that inside-out flat batted six over the extra-cover off the delivery from the game's greatest off-spinner Murali!

superb rahane.....halla bolll....sreesanth should play....rahane shld b selected 4 w20-20..

Anyone here still in support of Vinay Kumar?? If so, please tell him that a slow ball is supposed to be "marginally" slower than the usual fare, and not so slow that a batsman, initially flummoxed, can still recover and smash it.
