Big picture

Three days after they failed to chase 132 after having been 73 for 2 at home against Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders run into the same team again, this time in Mohali. The Eden Gardens game was Knight Riders' to lose; they went ahead and and somehow contrived to lose it, failing to get 13 off the final 12 deliveries. It was one of those Knight Riders defeats that just happened though they had no business getting defeated. There are numerous sides that fail to win from strong positions, but the underachievers tag has stuck particularly hard to Knight Riders, not least due to the many big players they have.

The slow and turning Kolkata pitch has worked against them twice in three games now; even in the third match, they had to work hard to get past Rajasthan Royals. A change of venue and wicket would be welcome for the visitors. However, the Kings XI medium-pacers, led by Dimitri Mascarenhas, proved difficult to get away on the Mohali pitch against Pune Warriors.

Players to watch

Gautam Gambhir was livid after the loss to Kings XI in Kolkata, saying that his batsmen needed to play "intelligent cricket." Strong decisions would be taken unless players started performing, Gambhir said. Gambhir hasn't exactly done that himself so far, apart from a 64 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. That innings set up Knight Riders' first win of the season after consecutive losses. Gambhir needs to show his misfiring team-mates the way again.

While Gambhir has at least one match-winning innings so far, his counterpart Adam Gilchrist has failed to get going. The retired Gilchrist plays only in the IPL, which makes it only more difficult for him at the start of the season. The sooner he finds some form, the better for his side.

Stats and trivia

  • Of the eight old IPL franchises, Knight Riders' win-loss ratio of 0.78 is the second-worst, after Deccan Chargers' 0.67
  • Mandeep Singh is the only Kings XI batsman to have made more than 100 runs so far this season

"He is a hard worker. He is a terrific young man. I'm just trying to create the environment that he is comfortable to be a part of and that he knows the specific role that he has got.."
Adam Gilchrist on Kings XI's hero of the previous game, Harmeet Singh

"He's a match-winner. He can turn a match in a blink of an eye. We are showing confidence in him. He's got the full support of everyone in the team. Everyone knows what a devastating player he can be. It's only a matter of time before he wins us that game."
Knight Riders' coach Trevor Bayliss on Yusuf Pathan

Excellent captaincy by Gambhir and equally good captain's knock. Take bow! All the Shakib fanatics - this is IPL. Not Bangladesh team or BPL. Get real. If you can't digest the proceedings, go watch Bangladesh Domestic Cricket.

Posted by Hayat22 on (April 18, 2012, 17:39 GMT)

@Avijit Rai, Not change the owner, who have been the most patient all these years unlike those , say at RCB/DC, but rather change the city/province, as that would liberate the Knight Riders of fanatics on either side of the international border rooting for their favorite players irrespective of their utility, but always with hidden agendas. There is no difference in some locals disliking KKR for dropping a non performing Ganguly, while the BD fans going over the top for Sir Shakib, and abusing Gambhir with an agenda of displacing him from captiancy and seeking to plant him there! far fetched it may be but you get the feel here on the boards.

The Knights need fans and not fanatics! I'm sure any other city in India would give anything to host an IPL team.

Hey guys it seems my proposal for the team on this track was accepted, and it has delivered! ;-D

Its sad to see BD fans not understanding that though Shakib is good however the balance on this track is better off with this composition. Just now Mc Cullum has gotten out for 15, but the fact that the bowling delivered and the target isn't daunting means the team selected was right.

I feel that fans need to support teams and not individuals, and just coz your favorite isn't on the board should not be a reason to desert the team!

why they let a man of the match sakib in sideline?

Brett Lee, McCullum (Huge flop) in place Shakib and Tendo???????? Gambhir come to your senses... Gambhir is spoiling team morale with his tough and demotivating words.... Though a KKR fan I'm supporting Kings XI today.. Gambhir doesn't have a single quality to be a captain...

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 14:31 GMT)

rather change the owner! !!

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 14:30 GMT)

why are they not giving azhar mahmood a chance?

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 14:27 GMT)

Gambhir (and KKR) is so gonna regret not keeping Shakib Al Hasan in the main squad. Shakib was performing consistently with the ball. What else does he have to to secure a place in the main team? Get all the wickets??!?!

Posted by PhaniBhaskar24 on (April 18, 2012, 14:20 GMT)

I still feel KKR lacks the middle order strenght. Too much on Sakib, who always can't win the match for you. My Batting order: Kallis, Bisla, Tiwary, Gambhir, Morgan, Shakib, Yousuf, Bhatia, Lee, Narnie, Balaji. Try this order. Am sure, KKR can win this cup

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 14:18 GMT)

Wrong info here - KKR isn't playing the same team now, are they?

Posted by AusieBangaleeShameem on (April 18, 2012, 14:13 GMT)

Hope to see Kings XI win this one with a HUGE margin. Best of luck Gilly, mate - please bat well in this match. Smash Sunil Narine out of the field please. This is a wish from the heart of an Australian Bangalee!!!

Posted by Abids11 on (April 18, 2012, 14:07 GMT)

no shakib.... no win for kkr....

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 13:59 GMT)

I thik just 2 change rayan ten doescte take Morgan in his place and take balaji place of unancut,it Will be better for kkr installa.

Posted by AnasShah17 on (April 18, 2012, 13:58 GMT)

KKR should put Yousuf Pathan on no. 3 position in the batting lineup He will show his superb batting in the upcoming future 'Best of luck KKR'

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 13:50 GMT)

I think first time change the captain kallis place of gautam gambhir, gambhir is not good captain so i am following kkr plyers not performing becouse of him,kkr plyers not Happy With him,i think just two change rayan ten doescte and take morgan in his place or Mc cullam opening with gambhir and kallis batting order 3.and come-back balaji place of unancut,i am sure it Will better against kings 11,and inshallah kolkata will win

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 13:28 GMT)

Best of LUCK KKR . Hope a big win

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 13:26 GMT)

Rightly said! Poor captaincy is the cause of their continuous defeats in every game.

Posted by InnocentGuy on (April 18, 2012, 13:22 GMT)

"Strong decisions will be taken unless players start performing" - HA HA. Nobody cares. They get their money anyway.

Posted by saager on (April 18, 2012, 13:20 GMT)

McCullum should be given a chance in todays match. kallis should play fast. KKr team : Gambhir, kallis, Y Pathan, Shakib, McCullam, Das, Bisla, Bhatia, Narine, Balaji, Tivary.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 13:18 GMT)

morgan should come in place of kallis..... Gamvir-Bisla can be the option for opening pair ...yousuf may get a chance to bat in no 3 posn, if he can perform in this posn it will be a huge lift for KKR and morgan can bat at no 7 posn...

Posted by munir009 on (April 18, 2012, 12:50 GMT)

Captaincy and management of KKR, probably coach too are very poor. What are they doing? Last match what they did? Even every match! They have a fixed (super fixed) batting line up..which is not changeable! Last match if they sent Yousuf, Das, Bisla in the opening to do a flying start, was it a problem? If they bat first or chase 130 or chase 180 they have the same attitude!! The want a oneday/test style safe start.....

Even last year what we have seen, they have lost 2/3 wickets but score is around 160!! What happened to other team in the same situation they will score around 200!!

Last match they didnot take Abdullah in a spinning wicket! Very poor captaincy, not changing bowlers in right time...

if it is continue they will lose again... they have to rearrange the batting order every time depending on the opponent, match situation... same as bowling...

As a KKR fan, I feel very sad...

Posted by jinudj on (April 18, 2012, 12:46 GMT)

gambir please use pathan's talant. you people......didnt giving a chance....@roger costa you are absoulutly ryt....

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:43 GMT)

Now as per my view today KKR will be the King not the othere. Yusuf pathan will fire and Brett Lee will stop the Punjab to fire. Eoin Morgan should play today on the place of Ryan Ten Doeschate.

My Team for today match :-

Gautam Gambhir(c), Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan, M Bisla(w), Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Rajat Bhatia, Laxmi Shukla, Sunil Narine, L Balaji, Shakib Al Hasan.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:32 GMT)

punjab should give a change to Azher Mahmood

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:23 GMT)

kkr all the way for this match

Posted by remnant on (April 18, 2012, 12:15 GMT)

Players to avoid today: Unadkat, Pathan. Players to play today: Mc Cullum, Lee, Balaji Reason. This is Mohali. Conducive to pace. Mc Cullum can play easily in place of Pathan and Lee can bolw better. Use 1 quality spinners only. Narine, Shakib, Balaji. But the 4 foreigners means that either Mu Cullum sits and Yusuf :( plays agian or they make either Narine or Shakib sit out. In that case if KKR goes with Mc Cullum then they should pick the specialist Narine ahead of all rounder Shakib, as Narine is still a mystery bowlerand can trouble on wicket. Not so sure about Shakib. Otherwise if it is Yusuf in place of mc cullum then both Shakib and Narine can get to play.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:14 GMT)

has yusuf pathan become dud i can not believe that ....

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:14 GMT)

this should be the team and batting order. 1.J.kallis 2. Bisla 3. Gautam Gambhir 4. Yusuf Pathan 5. TIWARY 6.Debabrata Das 7.E.Morgan 8.Shakib Al Hasan 9. Rajat Bhatia 10.Laxmipati Balaji 11. Sunil Narine

Posted by Damo_s on (April 18, 2012, 12:09 GMT)

Morgan was instrumental in England winning the T20 world cup. He is very talented and should be playing without question. He cant do much worse than some of his team mates.

Posted by Dev9212 on (April 18, 2012, 12:09 GMT)

To be honest I was surprised that KKR dropped Balaji after 2 terrific performances and KKR need to drop Tendo and bring in Mculam and there. Gambhir and Mculam should open with Shakib or Kallis coming in at no.3 or 4 depending upon who is dismissed.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 12:04 GMT)

1. Yusuf Pathan, 2.Gambhir, 3.Bisla, 4.Manoj, 5.Laxmi Shukla 6.Debabrata Das, 7.ten doeschate, 8.Shakib, 9.Bhatia 10.Narine 11.LEE

Posted by fklap on (April 18, 2012, 12:00 GMT)

Yousuf will Play 100% if KKR wants to win this Match, today he will rock, and Gambhir also hit 4 Sixes atleast,

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:59 GMT)

I think Shakib should bat at no. 3 or 4. Morgan should in instead of Doeschate. Balaji should come back instead of Unadkat

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:55 GMT)

Mecculllan should be com in top order, and also morgen include, plying 11,

KKr make sure about 1st batting is score will 160+,,otherwise thay wil down again,,

Posted by Indian_55 on (April 18, 2012, 11:54 GMT)

Whether KKR wins or not... would spport KKR always...!!!

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:37 GMT)

KKR manegement@ plz give a chance to open the innings of yusuf pathan. if he can play 20 or 25 ball he can score 40 or 50 runs. it will be a boost of the coming players.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:28 GMT)

Kallis is better for TEST, good for ONEDAY, but WORST for T20. Although he has an average of 35 in T20s ,maximum Fifties in IPL(14 times), but he always keep his own team in pressure. Bisla should open with Gambhir and M Tiwary should be agressive from the start of his batting. Hope KKR will comeback today.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:27 GMT)

Gilchrist is the finest thing to happen to KXIP, besides him there is not much firepower in the batting line up and that's showing on the scorecard! Bowling is not an issue i guess. Good luck Lions.. Steamroll the Knights..

Posted by AgaramRamesh on (April 18, 2012, 11:18 GMT)

bating first is helpful for KKR other wise GILLY put pressor on chasing

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:17 GMT)

does any 1 along with me feel Yusuf Pathan has already been given enuf chances? he only comes gud once in about 20 matches. and gambhir, can he get out in any other way except the outside to first slip or dragging the ball onto the stumps? I think if he takes care of these 2 ways of gettting out, he wont get out in his lifetime, coz he doesnt know any other way to get out except these 2..

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 11:04 GMT)

KKR prob. not big player ..... they always play LACK OF CONFIDENCE .... we know how WARNE use YUSUF and how KALLIS perform in RCB. they need to get 1st ZEAL & CONFIDENCE .... like this time DD Played till.

Posted by Sarfin on (April 18, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

It's funny that Gamvir was so critical of other batsmen. Apart from a half century he did nothing as a top order batsman.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 10:55 GMT)

Yusuf pathan should be rested...he is finished....!!!

Posted by addicted_to_chaos on (April 18, 2012, 10:28 GMT)

Comeon Azhar Mehmood....... cheers for Punjab XI

Posted by Z.Saleem on (April 18, 2012, 10:27 GMT)

Hopefully Azhar Mehmood plays today, he is class and will be very good at the top of the order with Gilly

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

I think Kallis should sit in the bech as he's not performing well.. Yusuf Pathan should be given one last chance today. Team should be 1. Gautam Gambhir 2. Brendon McCullam 3. Mavinder Bisla 4. Manoj Tiwary 5. Yusuf Pathan 6. Debabrata Das 7. Shakid Al Hasan 8. Rajat Bhatia or Pradeep Sanghwan 9. Brett Lee 10. Laxmipati Balaji 11. Sunil Narin or Iqbal Abdulla

Posted by samkohli on (April 18, 2012, 10:08 GMT)

@Kavindeven, please mind dat ajinkya rahane was already a very talented and organised player, he hadnt played for rr wen he made his t20 and odi debut, an average of 68.47 isnt given by rr team management in fc matches.....

Posted by Aman_blues on (April 18, 2012, 9:47 GMT)

get McCullum back into the squad in place of kallis, morgan in place of ten doescte and shukla who is capable in place of yousuf who is just a flop

Posted by addicted.samyam on (April 18, 2012, 9:36 GMT)

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 8:52 GMT)

Now its time to out Kallis from squad and make room for other good player like Hasn,Lee,Mculam,Morgan,,,,

Posted by rangabati on (April 18, 2012, 8:51 GMT)

give a chance to Morgan in this match

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 8:42 GMT)

Gambhir and KKR Management Not using Pathan Properly and his Power, you people is watching that he is not scoring but did u see the situation when he came for batting, send him as opener or no 3 then you will see his magic, but am sure if he will get chance then he will prove himself today, he will rock today,

Posted by Baundele on (April 18, 2012, 8:35 GMT)

Well, I actually become surprised when KKR wins any match with that horrible mess in their team composition. Why Kallis opens? Why guys like ten Doeschate and Shakib bat at no. 8 or no. 9? Why Yusuf Abdullah is left out in spinner-friendly pitches? Why out of form players like Tiwary and Yusuf bat ahead of quality batsmen (ten Doeschate, Shakib, Das) and waste deliveries? They never had a 'team', they started with a random combination, which failed, they tried another one, again failed, and they will keep doing the same until the IPL is over. All their players lack motivation. Yusuf was a Yusuf because of Shane Warne.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 8:27 GMT)

I think KKR having problems with first 6 overs of powerplay, Gambhir needs good support from Kallis. Bisla is doing well after getting entry to the team. Look at the stats of 1st 6 overs where KKR lost. KKR: 65 for 6(6.5 ovrs) vs Delhi KKR: 25 for 4(5.4 ovrs) vs Rajsthan KKR: 48 for 2(6.0 ovr) vs KXIP. KKR won 2 matches, either they scored runs or kept wickets in hand in 1st 6 overs - won against RCB- KKR: 60/0(6.0ovr) & Rajsthan KKR: 36/1. may be team relayed on hitters like Pathan, Doeschat, Shakib & Das at the bottom, so first 6 overs should not cause any damage, but I think early overs creating much pressure on middle orders. Pathan should be sent to top at 1st down or after 15 overs with free license to hit,not in the middle.KKR is lacking of a left handed batsman at the middle, I guess Morgan will be the best choice instead of Doeschat for now. If Balaji becomes fit, KKR should not think much about bowling combination, as among their 5 matches 3 man of the match are bowlers

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

Gambhir will fire today and Yusuf pathan is not required for KKR.Man to watch out for is SHAKIB. Bring Bret-Lee back for Yusuf , he can hit as well deep down

Posted by Fawmy on (April 18, 2012, 7:45 GMT)

Drop Yousuf Pathan to warm the bench, let youngsters to prove their talent

Posted by Fawmy on (April 18, 2012, 7:43 GMT)

Any new about Thamim and Shakib going back to BD for Pak tour?

Posted by here2rock on (April 18, 2012, 7:38 GMT)

Overrated Yousif Pathan and Gambhir. Good luck to KK, they will need it. They are not the smartest management going around in IPL.

Posted by Romenevans on (April 18, 2012, 7:38 GMT)

Yusuf pathan is the biggest joke of this line up. The thing is Rajasthan Royals always develop home grown talent...but then other franchise buy them for big money and then with overhype they fail to deliver. Credit goes to RR management the way they manage these young kids...Look at Rahane!

Posted by pai11 on (April 18, 2012, 7:35 GMT)

@ surojit samanta: did you mean Iqbal Abdulla? KKR are losing matches due to their lacklustre batting performances. how will bringing in abdulla instead of pathan prevent that?

Posted by addicted.samyam on (April 18, 2012, 7:22 GMT)

the best thing to do is start with gambir and bisla then no 3. kallis 4. mCcllum 5. tiwary 6. shakib al hasan 7. debabrata das 8. chirag jani (leave out yusuf) 9. pradeep sangwan (swap rajat bhattia) 10. balaji 11. sunil narine....

Posted by addicted.samyam on (April 18, 2012, 7:12 GMT)

bring in pradeep sangwan instead of laxmi ratan shukla.

Posted by imneyaz on (April 18, 2012, 7:11 GMT)

KKR should choose playing eleven game by game Shami,Sangwan,Morgan should play in some matches too.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2012, 6:43 GMT)

Bring back Yusuf Abdulla in place of Yusuf Pathan. He doesn't deserve a place in the side. He is out of form in every aspect of the game.

Posted by Ordinary_think_tank on (April 18, 2012, 6:36 GMT)

KKR will win this one as last match was unfortunate for them. Today we will experience the confident KKR with better performance of Tendo and Shakib. Young players should be encouraged from behind by the oldies and management which might be missing in some cases. Cheers and enjoy fans!

Posted by satish619chandar on (April 18, 2012, 6:16 GMT)

Mr.Trevor Bayliss.. You MUST show faith on him.. because u guys spent more than 2M for him.. And, to have in bench will be a utter waste of money..
