Azhar Mahmood's visa issues resolved

ESPNcricinfo staff
  shares 54

Azhar Mahmood, the former Pakistan allrounder, has received a visa to play across Indian cities in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab. He had initially experienced a delay in receiving his visa, and then got one that was valid only for Delhi and Chandigarh.

Mahmood confirmed the news in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon.

On Monday, Mahmood, who is now a British citizen, had said that the issue was not political and was likely to be solved quickly. "The guy who made the visa only entered the name of my entry point into the country [Delhi] and destination [Chandigarh]," Hindustan Times quoted him as saying. "It's just procedural and not a political issue, and should get sorted out in a couple of days."

Mahmood was bought by Kings XI at the auction in February for $200,000. He was expected to be available for selection from the beginning of the IPL but missed the franchise's first four games due to the visa issues. He will be available for their fifth game on Wednesday evening against Kolkata Knight Riders at home.

@ Vivian_Richard :- You have a point. but here even that should not be the case because now Azhar Mahmood is a British Citizen, Playing cricket all around the year in England and no cricket in Pakistan.

  • Sports4Youth on April 20, 2012, 18:25 GMT

Azhar Mahmood justified himself in the very first match by scoring 33* from just 14 balls. great srike rate. though his bowling did not click very well courtesy Gayle and AB.

Wednesday, evening they play against Mumbai not KKR. Am I right?? If yes, then please correct the content!!!

  • Vivian_Richard on April 20, 2012, 8:48 GMT

I can't understand this. If Pakistani politicians can come to India, why not cricketers? Seriously? Azhar Mahmood is such and 'important' player in the line up? That smacks of the shoddy line up that Kings XI have. Not even sure if they should continue with the same name.

  • on April 19, 2012, 17:13 GMT

Well, Whats the point in proving whether Azhar Mahmood is a British or a Pakistani???

    btw Who Cares?????

For all his fans its a good news that he will be playing for Kings XI Punjab, and for the rest of us, it doesn't really matter. We like KP, Sachin, Afridi, Wasim, Ganguly, Ponting, Gayle etc not because of their nationalities but purely because they are/were great entertainers.... I hope that helps.

Isn't a slightest bit surprised to see him invading thru a third Country. It always happened in the past through Nepal, Bangla and now England. Anyhow wish Azhar best of luck.

All the best Azhar for the IPL about time your visa has been sorted, better late than never... Hopefully this paves the way for Pakistani players too.. considering that they are very good T20 players..

Azhar holds British citizenship due to marrying a British Pakustani woman and years of services to county cricket. He can live in both the UK or Pakistan. He qualified for the IPL through his British passport connections. And finally the chances of him playing for England are zero. Aint gonna happen. So there's no point even talking about it. He actually harbours a desire to still play for Pakistan if you people actually read the last interview Cricinfo did with him.

  • maddy20 on April 19, 2012, 8:09 GMT

@getsetgopk This year's IPL has produced some of the most exciting t20 cricket I have ever seen, the latest being the RCB vs PW game. Only a pathetic team like KXIP would need such a player. And mark my words when I say if he does play he is gonna get tonked by the likes of Kohli, Rahane, Bisla among others. Mascherenas has picked up a 5-for in his previous game and I wonder if Mehmood can find a spot in the team at all!

  • Overdrive on April 19, 2012, 7:17 GMT

great to see Azhar finally ready to play IPL. Its about time for the other good pakistan players to be allowed to play it aswell!

  • on April 19, 2012, 7:01 GMT

Its nice to hear finally a Pakistan player is allowed to play in IPL wishing him all the best for Kings XI Punjab. It is sad that no Pakistani players are allowed to play in IPL due to political tensions between I & P They also would have enjoyed the rich IPL

  • on April 19, 2012, 6:09 GMT

i m sure english selecterz will give him a chance in the upcoming t20 world cup in srilanka,he always played well in county cricket and he played v well in BPL .good luck in the IPL nomi....dont forget comprehencive school and our beautifull school days and the childhood sweet memories in CRA ground islamabad.lol...good luck

  • KiwiRocker- on April 19, 2012, 5:09 GMT

Poor Dravid_Gravitas is jumping up and down trying to prove a point that Azahar Mehmood is British. Yes, Indeed this is the case as he is married to a UK citizen however, son, there are rules around players who have played for one country playing for another. Its called stand down period. You need to imporve your knowledge before commenting, I have noticed most of your comments make no sense. Saqlain Mushtaq was a far better player and England needed him but he was not keen and so is the case for Azhar. Just focus on worthless circus IPL, and enjoy the irony that BCCI tried their harest to ban Pak player with excuses of Indian Govt, and now a Pakistani is playing in IPL..Irony..Indeed!

  • on April 19, 2012, 4:57 GMT

love to see Pakistan player in IPL, good luck Azhar.... think how it world be if Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Ajmal & Gul in IPL....

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 19, 2012, 4:43 GMT

@Rajcricketlover, what shameless? Azhar is a professional cricketer and he is not a Pakistani anymore. He can play IPL. He has only so many years of life as a sportsperson. He would want to earn money for himself and his family. He put himself up for auction. He didn't force anybody to buy him. He is an awesome allrounder. So he was bought. Why he should be ashamed? There's no shame in that. We professionals move to USA. We retire when we are 60. Azhar has no such luck. He is not a Techie or a Doc to work well into 60s and 70s. Greener pastures is the name of the game. That's what it is.

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 19, 2012, 4:37 GMT

I really wish Azhar Mahmood all the best and hope he gets to play for his country England. He is a gem of an all-rounder. Way better than Mascarenhas. I'm sure he will get to play at some point for the KXIP.

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 19, 2012, 4:34 GMT

Azhar Mahmood should replace the other Brit Mascarenhas in Kings XI. Wow! So there are three Brits in IPL - KP, Mascarenhas, Azhar Mahmood. Bravo! Hope more Brits play in IPL.

  • Crusader1980 on April 19, 2012, 3:45 GMT

@PakPacer - Then why are you poking your nose into this article buddy...??? Btw..did u watch yesterday's match full...??

  • on April 19, 2012, 3:34 GMT

    not playing against kkr

  • AMD. on April 19, 2012, 3:12 GMT

Azhar has emerged as a fantastic T20 batsman and everyone knows about his bowlink skills too. But it will not be easy for him to occupy in the playing XI. Gilchrist,Marsh,Hussey- all are automatic choices . The fourth guy Mascerenhas has picked up 5 wickets against Pune and yesterday he bowled well against Kolkata too.Anyway I prefer him over Mascarenhas.

  • getsetgopk on April 19, 2012, 1:48 GMT

Yea right keep telling yourself that he's not a Pakistani hahaha that gota be the joke of the past few centuries at least. He played for Pakistan, married to a Pakistani and moved to England just because his cricketing services were no longer REQUIRED in Pakistan, just goes to show how this IPL hoopla desperately needs Pakistani players play in it to make it somewhat of a decent competition.

  • Nathan_123 on April 18, 2012, 19:58 GMT

Nice to see another brit playing in the IPL. Azar is a very talented one day player and he still got plenty of fuel in the tank. I would like to see him in England shirt soon. I wish him well.

  • Rajcricketlover on April 18, 2012, 19:51 GMT

Shameless Azhar Mahabood! Why at all he wants to play in india? Are all of them not banned?

  • naz139 on April 18, 2012, 19:42 GMT

With the exception of Gilly, Azhar is better than any other kinds x1 player..why wasnt he playing? It is all political

  • on April 18, 2012, 19:27 GMT

Dravid_Gravitas : Agreed ! And he must be a happy man that he left Pakistan (No offence to anyone) if you see from his professional point of view. PCB was ignoring him. And now in IPL, since he is a good all-rounder, he will earn handsome amount of money and might even make it to Eng. T-20 side especially for WC !

  • on April 18, 2012, 19:21 GMT

Hmm..... at last ! Btw, whom will he replace ? Gilly, Hussey and Marsh - Can't be replaced ! May be Dmitri Masc. at some pt. time ! Will NOT matter much. A successful IPL team is one which has quality Indian players and they are in-form. DC's all foreign players are contributing but still they are losing ! RR's Rahane and bowlers are performing so they winning despite being MINNOWS. Owais Shah is already knocking the doors of ECB with his superb knocks for T-20 WC that has to be played in sub-continent only against the same kindda slow/spin bowlers ! Can Azhar do the same ?

  • frozendilemma on April 18, 2012, 19:15 GMT

They included him as 12th man today to carry drinks...wow thats how you use your star player

  • on April 18, 2012, 19:09 GMT

@Dravid_Gravitas - Any comments about your boy's great performance? Dropped catches, avg 24 and strike rate 110 (lowest), getting bowled, lol what a legend!

  • on April 18, 2012, 18:58 GMT

it seems to be PIPL "Political Indian Premier League"......u can see everything except the game of cricket...............

  • PakPacer on April 18, 2012, 18:56 GMT

Who cares about the IPL again?

  • drnaveed on April 18, 2012, 18:22 GMT

well it took a long long time for the indian government to issue visa to azhar mehmood.he was picked by his team long time ago, and that time was sufficient enough for the indian government to have issued him the visa.by now around 20 matches of IPL have been played ,and now he is getting his visa to play. is this some sort of a joke ?????????????

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 18, 2012, 17:52 GMT

@8teen, Azhaar Mahmood is not a Pakistani. Isn't it clear that he wants to be a Brit with his citizenship application and all? He himself rejected Pakistani citizenship while accepting to be a Brit. Isn't it? Once again I say, glad to see another Brit in IPL along with KP. @Bruisers - lol..that's a good one. But, I really don't take digs at England for having players of foreign origin in their team. Point is this - all the guys saying Azhar Mahmood is a Pakistani should wake up. The bloke made it clear that he prefers to be a Brit by cancelling his Pakistani Citizenship.

  • anishkm on April 18, 2012, 17:41 GMT

He should have been included in the place of Mascaranhass... the team will be balanced

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 18, 2012, 17:05 GMT

Welcome to India Azhar !!! I was initially angry that he wasn't allowed to tour all over the country. Glad he's got the visa necessary to do so. I hope he brings in good luck to Kings XI Punjab.

  • Sports4Youth on April 18, 2012, 15:00 GMT

Earlier I had trouble explaining to others that now Azhar Mahmood is a British citizen. Here this article has stated it explicitly. In that case i wonder why his news item is shown on the Pakistan page. Don't you think that this new iteme should be in the England page ? Infact he got visa and IPL clearance because now he is a British Citizen after marrying his British wife and playing in England since many years. Azhar has not played any domestic cricket in Pakistan for the past 4-5 years.

  • Z.Saleem on April 18, 2012, 14:55 GMT
