Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore have a South African player each to thank for getting their campaigns on track after both sides had middling starts to the season. Defending champions Super Kings lost two of their first three games while Royal Challengers had a run of three straight losses. Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers have had a role to play in every win their sides have registered. Du Plessis has been solid at the top of the order with three brisk half-centuries while de Villiers, even when he's not made a fifty, has been instrumental in getting his team home under pressure, as he did against Pune Warriors.

Royal Challengers' batting has been more destructive with the added advantage of having Chris Gayle. Super Kings have had the edge in bowling, though, with Royal Challengers conceding 45 in the last two overs to lose a game they had almost won after posting 205 against the former in Chennai. Payback will be on Royal Challengers' minds for their home game after three consecutive wins, but will their bowling hold up?

Player to watch

While the focus has been on Gayle, AB de Villiers has scored nearly as many runs as the former at a better strike-rate, 164.02 against 152.43. He has been incredibly proficient at scoring runs behind square on both sides of the wicket. Scoops and reverse-hits have fetched him plenty of boundaries. Royal Challengers have lost all three games in which he has failed.

Stats and trivia

  • Gayle has hit the most number of sixes so far this season - 19.

  • Royal Challengers have lost their last three games against Super Kings.

    Quotes

"Virat played very well in Chennai, and we are very new into the season. Virat's one of the best players in the world, so he is going to come good and win us a couple of games before this tournament is over."
Daniel Vettori, the Royal Challengers captain, is not worried about Virat Kohli's lean run so far

today RCB will win the match..........

Posted by BinduKumar on (April 25, 2012, 15:04 GMT)

5th bowler has been a problem for RCB. Though Appanna bowled well in the last game it was on a different track. So it boils down to the performance of the 5th bowler - whoever is going to picked for the day... Having said that, if Gayle starts hitting the 5th bowler problem may not cause any hindrance :)

Though i don't like Chennai for X reasons, i should agree with most of you that Chennai is one team who plays as a team. But i would bet, let Dhoni go off from CSK, no more fair play awards, no confidence in players, no champions.....Lets do this & see. I say only Dhoni

Posted by raghu1122000 on (April 25, 2012, 14:15 GMT)

I wonder if its a 10 over match or a shortened game, will bangalore still send in ABD say 2 or 3 down. That would be a blunder. Gayle and ABD best batsmen.. send them in to make as much use of the opportunities as possible. sending ABD in a 10 over game wont do any good as it is.

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 12:37 GMT)

MSD is winning Team for CSK :)

Rain stopped in bangalore now... come on CSK rock once again on RCB... we are always wining kings

CSK has signed a 3 year contract wid IPL cup.........so no doubt the y ill be de champions

It's raining heavily in bangalore, but seems to halt before the play so expecting a 10 over match ,,,, it would be a cracker....

"Raining 10 km away from bangalore, don't know will it affect the match today" i'll pray in the god not to rain today. Y because its like war(Cricket) between two strong teams"

Posted by siddhu085 on (April 25, 2012, 10:10 GMT)

There's heavy rain in Bangalore..most likely match will be abandoned. So no use discussing who'll win. We may never get to know.

Posted by AjitNarayan on (April 25, 2012, 9:30 GMT)

@vickytheboss.. oh my god... do you people ever do your research? 2011 stats...Badri 396 runs (5 50s), Dhoni 392 runs (2 50s), Raina 438 runs (4 50s), Vijay 423 runs (3 50s). How is that?

Posted by Sho_bit on (April 25, 2012, 9:28 GMT)

RCB is going to 2 in the table today. And looking at their current form they are likely to stay there for some time. DD will remain on top. CSK will follow RCB to fill the top spots soon. KKR will find it difficult to hold on to their position. RR and PW will slowly slip down as we reach the interesting phase of the IPL.

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 9:05 GMT)

@vickytheboss, CSK gonna be the champs again this year to complete the hattrick of IPL championships.. Come CSK is never a one man army like RCB.. Last year it was all about Gayle while Chennai had consistence performances from Raina, Hussey, Dhoni with the bat and Ashwin, Bollinger and Jakati with the ball.. Not to forget the importance of Badhri and Morkel and Dhoni's captaincy.. CSK won two championship coz they play as a team and doesnt depend on individuals..

Even this year, Du Plesis, Badhri, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Morkel, Bravo plays crucial role in the victories they had.. I think the haters of CSK are so Jealous :P

Posted by Ather11plus on (April 25, 2012, 8:59 GMT)

I lik vettori, gayle, virat, zak & AB. They are super duper player. They are multi talent player and single handle can down any team. But in IPL they need more than that, one team who can field, score, bat, bowl & cheer together will win the game & IPL 5.Only one team is good it at, who has done Before, done for 2nd time and will do it for the 3rd time and will do it for ages… Royal challengers are good to beat other team but not very good to beat one team. If they want to win against that one team, it will only happen, when that one team shows pity on Royal challengers. So supporter & fans of Royal challengers get tough & strong because the kings will never show pity for any royals…… Filmy lines……ha ha ha. Want to have an interesting game between Kings & Royals. Who ever play good will win the game. We will have entertainment for 4 hrs. All the best and I will roar for kings for today's match!!!

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 8:58 GMT)

@vickytheboss.. U r a funny guy... CSK dependent on one player.. Go and watch pogo please.. RCB first time has another player performing n winning for them other than gayle.. CSK always wins as a team.. It's a fact.. Funny ppl..

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

1.Gayle 2.Dilshan / Andrew McDonald 3.Kholi 4.ABD (Cap) 5.Arun Karthick / Asad Pathan 6.Muralidharen Gautam (WKT) 7.Raju Bhatkal / S Thiyagarajan (ALR) 8.Mithun 9. Zaheer Khan 10.KP Appanna 11.Murali this is my winning RCB team for today !!!

Posted by Sho_bit on (April 25, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

Its definitely gonna rain here in Bangalore today. Will miss the much awaited match.

Posted by vickytheboss on (April 25, 2012, 8:11 GMT)

@Sivasailam Sankaran: CSK dont abuse opponents really? Then why they re at last place in fair play award. You re kidding right? CSK wins mostly bcoz of luck. Only one player will perform in a match that is du plessis. He performs well they re winning not like other teams. Last year they were totally depended on hussey now du plessis that is de only difference

Posted by Mr.Gibbs on (April 25, 2012, 8:07 GMT)

Both the teams have match winners, consistency will make the difference! and also CSK lower middle order is much capable then RCB, Key wicket is of AB and Dilshan! For CSK if Duplisue falls then Raina or Dhoni should take place! waiting for a cracker game! Go RCB goooo

Posted by gnshkini on (April 25, 2012, 7:38 GMT)

cmon CSK, just because vettori took a wrong decision you won the game the other day but full points to albie morkel.RCB is back , back with a bang. CSK is just another team for them.Get du plesis early in the innings and its RCB's game. Even if CKS gets gayle, np, we have devillers.

Posted by paritoshroy on (April 25, 2012, 7:32 GMT)

"Royals will hunt down the Kings" haha like they did in the last match. :P

Posted by pai11 on (April 25, 2012, 7:02 GMT)

I have one question here. I went through IPL rules book. It specifies that there must be atleast 2 players from the under-22 pool in the squad. all the teams are following this rule except CSK!!! can someone clarify whether the rule has changed or CSK given special exemption???

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 6:45 GMT)

10 Top reasons on why people support CSK. Winning as a team is all what's cricket about. See there are no specific Top scorers, No highest wicket takers, No Longest siz makers, no Karbon kamal catchers, no great fielders, blah blah blah.... in CSK. But CSK have is..... A TRUELY SPIRITED TEAM. At least one of the batsmen will play, one of bowler will take critical wickets, We don't get injured by flying but we field fairly and we listen to Captain. We don't abuse opponents and we treat them as partners whilst playing Cricket. CSK treats cricket as a sport and not a game. CSK don't have egos and that's why we don't fall even in the midst of Gayle's storm, Steyn's lightning speed, mumbai's heat. nor we are devils or warriors. We are kings and Royals works for us. As Kings we have given Tax rebate to Chargers in form of Rain and punished the Knight riders. Well, CSK is a true team - any body can watch them and those who support CSK are on the winning side

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 6:37 GMT)

Dhoni and Bravo should come up the order. First 6 overs must be used wisely. Bring in Morkel as a runner to du plessis and let morkel shower some sixers..... please

@ mahes Where is kulasekara best bowler intheir last two games

Lion's are roaring in bangalore chinaswamy stadium, to 3 three consecutive wins. this will be the superb match, clashing b/w south africans, jamican & srilankan. Welcome to Lions den @ bangalore

its high time that Kohli & Raina should join the party and score some runs. For a RCB fan it is becoming highly boring as none of the Indian players in the team is playing well- this is "INDIAN" premier league & 99% of the people watching are Indians - who prefer their players performing and winning matches for their teams so that the passion and emotional connect to their teams can be felt. Some times i feel these players are only worried about their individual performances with only a little passion for the team.As a fan,I will much rather prefer watching RCB winning the match with their collective effort than a Gayle or an AB winning the match for RCB(not Gayle's/AB's fault).Even though i hate CSK,i love their players commitment and passion towards the team, their fans high regards about the team is from the fact that the performing superstars who played major roles for their successes are from among themselves(Aswin/Badri/Vijay)- i Wish RCB has the same passion (Fans & Players)

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 5:38 GMT)

Royals will hunt down the Kings

Posted by hari040761 on (April 25, 2012, 5:37 GMT)

BECAUSE OF DOUBLE PHASED WICKET, JAKATI WILLBE A BETTER CHOICE THAN JOGINDER. ALSO RAINA SHOULD PLAY STRAIGHT OVER THE BOWLERS HEAD FOR HIS ARIEL SHOTS AGAINST SPINNERS LIKE APPANNA AND VETTORI BY USING HIS FEET WITHOUT MUCH HEIGHT WHICH WILL GO FOR FOUR OR FLAT SIX. ALSO SINCE ALBIE CAME BACK AFTER TRAVELLING FROM SA KULA CAN BE GIVEN ONE MORE.

Posted by T20fan on (April 25, 2012, 5:34 GMT)

Today is going to be payback time for RCB. It was a miserable time last match, and we want to forget it in a hurry. The tide has changed, and today will be the end of the "supposed" CSK dominance over RCB. All set for the Chinnaswamy tonight!!

Posted by badridps on (April 25, 2012, 5:11 GMT)

I personally feel Syed Mohammad / Asad Pathan must replace Harshal Patel in RCB and Pujara must be given another chance while Saurab Tiwari be rested for a match. And for CSK instead of Ashwin, Jadeja / Jakati must open the bowling to basket Gayle's Wicket, Ashwin is inconsistent this season. Hoping to watch a wonderful match tonight..

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 4:08 GMT)

Come on Chennai once again to prove we are the best one & best wishes for past wins & future winnings. I hope all chennai players will your full effort once again and to will seal the three consecutive against RCB. My Team XI Will be: 1)Faf Du Plesis 2)Badrinath 3)Srikanth Anirudh 4) S.Raina 5)Albi Morkel 6)M.Dhoni 7)D.Brawo 8)R.Jadeja 9)R.Ashwin 10) Joginder Sharma 11)Douge Bollinger that team will surely to prove all time IPL Winners.

HOW CSK IS GOING TO SHUFFLE TO BRING BACK ALBIE. WICKET OF GAYLE, DISHAN, DEVILLIERS ARE IMPORTANT.EVEN A HALF CHANCE SHOULD BE TAKEN. NO NEED TO CHANGE OPENING COMBINATION OF BADRI AND DUPLI. BADRI SHOULD ROTATE SINGLE AND OCCASIONAL BIG SHOTS TO REMOVE PRESSURE AT THE OTHER END. IMPORTANT: RAINA SHOULD BE VERY SELECTIVE IN HIS ARIEL SHOTS AS HE IS REPEATEDLY GETTING OUT IN THIS FASHION. AFTER ONE BIG HIT A SINGLE WILL BE ADVISABLE IN THE MIDDLE OVERS AND CONTINUOUS SLOGING IN THE FINAL TWO, THREE OVERS. DHONI SHOULD COME UP THE ORDER LIKE PREVIOUS GAMES JUDGING FOR WHOM THE DAY IS BELONGS IS MOST IMPORTANT

Posted by   on (April 25, 2012, 1:57 GMT)

let today be rcb's day...if all the top order fires...then it'll be a spectacle to watch...hope rcb's bowling doesn't let down..waiting for the match!!
