Dale Steyn takes out Richard Levi, Deccan Chargers v Mumbai Indians, IPL 2012, Visakhapatnam, April 9, 2012

Big Picture

Deccan Chargers will arrive in Pune buoyed by the fact that they have finally got their first point of the tournament, courtesy the washout against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. A couple of wins, however improbable it may seem after five successive losses, is all that it takes to lift a team. Pune Warriors, on the other hand, have four wins and they have nicked points off strong units such as Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Playing at their home ground, they wouldn't want to lose points to bottom-placed Chargers.

Warriors will be relieved to see Manish Pandey grab his chance at the top of the order and make some runs. With Jesse Ryder, Robin Uthappa and Steven Smith already in good form, their batting appears balanced. Bowling-wise, Alfonso Thomas is an automatic choice and that opens up the slot for the fourth foreign player. Luke Wright didn't get a chance with bat in the last game, so he might be persisted with.

For Chargers, the batting needs to come together fairly soon. Apart from Shikhar Dhawan, who has scored 208 runs, no one else has even managed 100 runs in the tournament yet. Kumar Sangakkara and JP Duminy are more than capable of scoring big. Cameron White has not looked comfortable this season, which means Daniel Christian could be back. Chargers' bowling has looked sharp whenever Dale Steyn has bowled, but there has been a lack of support at the other end. Batting and bowling problems aside, Chargers' coach Darren Lehmann will hope the fielders hold on to whatever comes their way.

Form guide

(most recent first)

Pune Warriors: LWLLW
Deccan Chargers: NRLLLL (NR - no result)

Players to watch

Dale Steyn has fought a lone battle on the field for Chargers and picked up nine wickets at an average of 13.77. The quality of the opposition has always fired him up. What he needs is a bit of support from the other end.

Alfonso Thomas' figures in the two games that he has played stand at 6-0-36-3. These six overs have all been bowled at Delhi Daredevils' batsmen. Against a misfiring Chargers batting line-up, he could be potentially more dangerous than Steyn.

Stats and trivia

  • The two teams have met twice before, and both times the team batting first has managed 136.
  • For batsmen who have scored more than 1000 runs in IPL, Sourav Ganguly is the slowest, with a strike-rate of 108.43.
  • Pune lost only two wickets in their defeat to Daredevils on Tuesday, the joint lowest number of wickets lost in a Twenty20 defeat (excluding shortened games).

"We are positive and the atmosphere is good enough for the team to make a winning comeback. We are very hopeful of making the last four."
Dale Steyn is not letting the despair set in

Dropping Dale Steyn is suicidal for a team at the bottom of the list. He s arguably the must vital resource for this otherwise weak team. Theron is good but why not play Dale instead of White? Sadiq Ahmed

Kevin Pietersen was never withDC. He was with RCB and Mallya let him go.

Posted by sridhar8 on (April 26, 2012, 13:46 GMT)

DC is useless. They let go of Pietersen, what were they thinking ? Sanga is a great captain but he can't do much with such a useless team. PWI should play Smith or Luke Wright up the order: Manish, Ryder, Dada, Luke, Smith, Uthappa, Kartik, Rahul Sharma, Alfonso Thomas, Nehra, <Another Bowler>

DC pl put some put up some fight...

Posted by squarepeg on (April 26, 2012, 13:27 GMT)

Pune should run over DC. It will prove nothing, the sole point DC has got so far is from the rain gods. Let's give a break to this Dada war- for or against. The facts are clear- he is a v good captain, and not anymore a star performer. One match against DD is not enough evidence that he can keep his place in the team if he was not the captain, or if IPL had no restriction on number of foreign players.

i am also a fan of Tamim Iqbal, i want him 2 open d innings, i saw him in chennai recently, he is some what lacking fitness i think.... he shud improve my best 11 for pwi tamim manish ganguly manhas ryder uthappa smith luke mkarthick/r.sharma nehra/ any youngster dinda...

Posted by India_boy on (April 26, 2012, 13:17 GMT)

One trend that has been up here in this IPL is that oversees batsmen are scoring runs but Indian bowlers are ruining it for their teams. For eg. Gayle scored, Kohli leaked, Duminy scored, chipli dropped KP's catch and amit mishra leaked, hussey/Miller scored, Chawla leaked, same story with other teams. The class of Indian players that are coming up in this IPL is not good enough for an Under-11 game on national level. IPL must increase its foreign quota to 5 players as that will not only increase the interest levels but also make the Indian slots more competitive.

my best 11 for PWI for dz match tamim iqbal & manish pandey shud open d innings 1.ganguly 2.manhas 3.ryder 4.uthappa 5.smith 6.luke wright 7.m.karthick/rahul sharma 8.dinda 9.nehra/ some youngster i know nehra is doing good in first spell, but he is not a spirited player...even rahul sharma and murali karthick is lethargic in field...so instead of authentic spin when clarke comes he shud take the place, And an Indian alrounder shud replace luke...

Chargers should hope for the best i.e. that they do a repeat performance of match no. 32 against KKR where they got 1 point.

Posted by Nampally on (April 26, 2012, 12:55 GMT)

The Deccan Chargers team is the worst one in the IPL 5. Their fielding is extremely poor especially the catching. This alone was responsible for at least 3 losses.Their bowling at death is non existent. Dale Steyn is the only Pro. who worked his butt off to bring a degree of respectability to the team. Sangakara played very poorly & among the other Pros. only Duminy is worth his money. If this team wants to continue in the IPL 6, they need at least good pros. Amongst the local talent, the team squandered players like Rayudu, Rohit Sharma, Ojha, KP, Gilchrist, etc from the past years. Dhawan & Duminy in batting & Steyn in bowling have given this team a measure of respectability. Either put a good team on the field or just don't humiliate the Deccan area by putting a below par team on the field. The solitary point this team has due to rain abandoned game. It is sad to see such a disorganised team in all departments of the game including talent.

I am hoping that it would be an easy victory for Dada & boys to go back to TOP 4 in the table... DADA ROCKSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Posted by Robin-Hood on (April 26, 2012, 12:39 GMT)

Sanga has most untalented INDIAN PLAYERS and rubbish international players(apart from Steyn) in his team. Any captain will be in huge pressure with this team. Only steyn, Dawan and Pathiv are performing, other are good for club cricket, dropping catches, miss run outs and there's no bowlers who can bowl line and length apart from steyn. Sanga should resign and play for different team as a player like Mahela before he gets a bad name.

Posted by PhaniBhaskar24 on (April 26, 2012, 12:37 GMT)

I think, Sanga has to be removed as captain. Srilanka doesn't want sanga to be their Captain & DC hugs him. Make any young guy, the captain of the team or try out with Steyn. The team needs energy, a person who can perform from the front & show the ways to others. Steyn is an obvious performer for DC. DC is loosing matches just they lack the confidence in them, particularly in Slog overs. Forget about investment of DC management, DC has enough in them to win atleast 1 match of their current 5. DC requires a enthuiastic captain, with fire in his belly, who can bring the team together.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

There is no need to degrade a player to support another. Sachin has played three matches and is coming of an injury. He has given good starts. Dravid has both captained well and given good platforms in quick time for RR to build on. He made a good fifty in last match but unfortunately was unsupported. Despite having a 'good' team unlike Dhoni or Sehwag who have great resources, both Dravid and Ganguly have marshalled their troops well. The RCB loss was unlucky for Ganguly because he led very well even in that match. And despite his struggles with the bat, he managed to support Ryder and took two timely wickets against Delhi. The MOM was well earned. So all three are contributing in their unique ways.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

Deccan Chargers are to this edition of IPL what Zimbabwe are to test cricket.

Posted by zahidtaniv on (April 26, 2012, 12:25 GMT)

Here is a summary of Pune's batsmen's performance so far: (Average, Strike Rate) Smith: 38.80, 152.75, Manhas: 37.00, 115.62, Ryder: 36.16, 129.94, Utthappa: 35.71, 119.04, Pandey: 35.00, 141.89, Samuels: 20.00, 105.26, Matthews: 18.00, 135.00, Dada: 15.87, 104.09. You see, dada is the weakest link in the batting lineup at the moment. He needs to perform. I know Tamim deserves to play but I don't know where Tamim fits at the moment. Only possibility, imo, was in place of Pandey. But he also scored runs in the last game.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 12:15 GMT)

I hope deccan wins tonight...

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 11:53 GMT)

dhawana nd parthiv are doing relatively good job..so sanga, dhawan, and parthiv on top, taking harris is also not a bad move, dan and cameron white had enough chances..and dey didnt prove....i say go with theron and steyne....amith mishra has been hit for most number of sixes in ipl...cnt count him much....jhunjhunwala and tanmay mishra should be sent up the order...!! i say go with sanga, harris/JP Duminy, steyne and theron.....and in Indian players....dhawan, parthiv, tanmay, jhunjunwala, ankit, amith, veer/rajan or any new talent.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 11:39 GMT)

w/o the leadership of dada, i dn't think pune can win a single match with the players they, no deadly bowler steyn, malinga, lee, no big hitter like Gayle, Pollard, Sehwag, Raina.

This is only magic of dada that they looks better then few other teams.

Best of luck dada.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 11:35 GMT)

Steyn says, "We are very hopeful of making the last four." Wow, that is very optimistic. May be he should lead DC. DC's bowling is very weak so they need to strengthen that. Adding Rusty Theron may be a good idea. No Cameron White, Chipli, Jaggi or Jhunjhunwala. Sunny Sohal played good last year so he deserves a chance. Since there is no chance of DC being greater than the bottom most team, they should try new faces among the allrounders.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 11:22 GMT)

let tamim should get chance today

Posted by Rachit.Agrawal on (April 26, 2012, 10:53 GMT)

@Rohit Bhargava.. If Ganguly is still not good then how did he manage to get an all round performance against the top team in the league so far DD and to top it all become the Man of the Match??

Everybody likes Stats so here is some.. In a tournament where each team plays 16 games even if we consider that there are 50% chances of a player from either team receiving MOM title, that gives only 8 players from a team to win MOM title across the tournament from a squad of 30 players and approx 15 regular first team players...

Ganguly has already won them a game and i sincerely doubt how many have his counterparts (Sachin or Dravid) won matches for their team this season

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 10:50 GMT)

Dada always look to defense in his batting also to select his team>it's good...but not good enough in T-20 cricket, also in the big tournament like IPL>PWI can win some but will never get IPL with This Selection.Ryder got runs>but not in song,he was luckily get runs..in all the match... PWI needs to use Tamim and Robin at opening,We all know about Tamim, who he is and what he did in the recent past, and also for Bangladesh over year and years.PWI must need to use a good opening pairs like them. PWI best 11 should be>> Tamim-Iqbal*,Robin uthappa,Ganguly,Pandey,S.Smith*,Wd Parnell*,Minhash,,Murli-kartik,Rahul sharma,Thomash*,Dinda (*) foreign players...

Posted by Jordan1 on (April 26, 2012, 10:43 GMT)

I think Sanga is under so much pressure thats why he could not perform well on his batting as the rest of the team is keep letting him down..he should give the captaincy away and concentrate on the batting..with this group of players any captain cant win any matches...except Dhawan no local payers are performing ..look at other teams ...Raydu (he is a local boy) has won the match for mumbai

Posted by rohitrainakohli on (April 26, 2012, 10:28 GMT)

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 10:27 GMT)

Pune have to try Luke Wright or Tamim for a change. Just cuz Pandey scored big runs in one game doesn't make him so good. And Luke is a hard hitter, something which Pune is missing. And Dada should go lower down the order and let Uthappa, Smith and Samuels bat at No.s 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

Posted by A.Ak on (April 26, 2012, 10:12 GMT)

DC have quality overseas players (all the teams) and decent local players. But, Lots of drop catches cost them what ever they've lost. An improvement in fielding could help them to reach a winning track. Good fielding performance from their local players is what made teams like CSK so consistent.

Posted by anver777 on (April 26, 2012, 10:08 GMT)

One final chance for DC to bounce back in to contention .... Hope Sanga & co will try & win this contest quiet comfortably !!!!! Best of Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 10:06 GMT)

DC should send Duminey at 3 or 4. and Parthiv should be the opener with Shikhar. Sanga at 1 down or 2 down. And Theron might be the answer to the the bowling worries!

Posted by The-love on (April 26, 2012, 9:48 GMT)

I have always been the supporter of teams lacking in the race.Deccan might not qualify for the semi-finals but I am pretty sure that this team will wash out dreams of some of the other teams. They are losing to every team so the team which loses to them will be under tremendous pressure.

Posted by Bathinda11 on (April 26, 2012, 9:28 GMT)

Manhas is a quality attacking player, playing too deep..he should bat at no:3 or 4 to get more chances to attack. he is good player of spin bowling and can score quickly in middle overs. Dada need to look into bowling matters. Nehra has been good only in patches...Smith has done wonders for team but need a support for some good hitter lower down the order..maybe a player like harpreet or mohnish mishra could be given a run.. ryder, wright(5),pandey,manhas,uthappa,ganguly(5),harpreet(5)/mishra, dinda(1), kartik(2), thomas(3),sharma(4)

today again pune will pay the price if they dont play matthews.i am surprised a captain of ganguly stature is taking such a big wrong decision of dropping matthews u cannot drop the number 1 allrounder of the earth based on 2 games.

Posted by ullalsk on (April 26, 2012, 9:03 GMT)

Problem with Deccan is not their bowling- Stey,Theron,Amit, Ankit, Rajan,Duminy. Their batting is too weak. Their top order all left handers. - Dhawan, Sanga,Parthiv,Duminy. So, opposing team can plan better.

Posted by Freddie.Dcosta on (April 26, 2012, 9:02 GMT)

@Rohit Bhargava Yes, and there are equal numbers saying He has been, He should retire etc etc... and He makes them look stupid with a comeback when it's least expected. For example a double century :)

I don't understand why this is happening to DC, the have few players that can change game around, but no luck at all, i would like to see THERON for WHITE because DC need to try different, my four foreign players are Sanga, Duminy, Theron, Stayen, also include Sunny Soha as opener. GO DC.... GO U CAN DO IT... ALL THE BEST

well said DALE "HATS OFF" - i like the confidene and positiveness in u and hope it is also in the rest of the team... im sure too somehow DC will start winning from now onwards coz they got all the tools and characters to win the matches.... im desperately looking forward to this match - DC HAS TO FIELD TO THEIR POTENTIAL....GO CHARGERS GO AND SHOW OTHERS THAT THE CLASS IS THERE FOREVER AND FLUKE IS JUST FOR TIMEBEING... GOODLUCK..

There is more pressure on DADA now for the team selection and the batting order. Pandey and Uthappa in Form but One cant forget Jesse Ryder since he played blazing knocks to take Pune to Victory. DADA himself cant bat down the order since he need hitters to play down the order to take his team to a huge total.. Dada in a spot of bother about one of the Overseas Player selection.. DADA always loves pressure situations and he has succeeded in many occasions for INDIA! Lets see what he can do for today's match! All the best DADA

if they loose todays Match i think that they should withdraw from the tournament atleast the team is saved from Further Humiliations....,

Every single article about Pune has someone or the other crying hoarse about how he was treated unfairly, how he somehow deserves a title, etc etc etc. All I hear are a bunch of whiners who somehow can't grow past the fact that he just isn't that good anymore. He should have gone the Kumble way and settled as a Mentor/Coach. And read it right, I said, not THAT good anymore...The implications are: He was good but he isn't as good as he used to be.

Posted by Raiyan24r on (April 26, 2012, 7:10 GMT)

pune should leave out Wright and play tamim.ryder and tamim should open.then robin, dada, smith, pandey, nehra, dinda ,murli ,alfonso

Posted by yorkslanka on (April 26, 2012, 6:40 GMT)

imho, the problem with DC is that compared to other succesful teams, their indian players are just not good enough..Amit mishra, is the whupping boy of the bowling world and is a liability in the field..also apart from steyn, they have no bowlers of any class...this is where they struggle and their owners need to invest in top rate foreign imports as well as better local players...christian and white are average at best...

Posted by Freddie.Dcosta on (April 26, 2012, 6:36 GMT)

I find it strange when Mr Fuloria says that DC will be buoyed that they have got one point. In fact wouldn't they be feeling sheepish about getting a point without playing a match?

And I don't know if Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev can be called greats as compared to Sir Shakib..Enlighten me..And for Deccan I think the problem is dre captain..he is unable to gel the team properly..we all noe Sanga's fate with KXIP

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 5:56 GMT)

Today with DC Rahul Sharma must b benched with Dhawan, Sanga, Patel and Duminy being lefty he may be the bowler to be targeted. Remember Rahul Sharma to Gayle, Amit Mishra to Gambhir and Piyush Chawla to Robin Peterson. Now the thing is with likes of Dhawan, patel and Sanga spin wont be so effective so better to go for Dinda if fit or Kumar. Manhas should play. Apart from a talented batsman he is a good fielder. I think Tamim should be given a chance ahead of Ryder. My team Tamim, Manish, Sourav, Robin, Steven, Mithun, Luke, Murli, Alfonso, Asish, Ashoke/Bhubaneswar. And DC must play B.B.Samantaray, an emerging talent capable of big hits, long standing inningses and economical bowling. Pune might consider Khadiwale in place of Manhas.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 5:53 GMT)

Deccan must make good use of first 6 overs and Dalesteyn must be supported by one more good bowler (who is that?). Deccan can then win Pune warriors. Couple of early wickets like Ryder's one should also help. Come on Deccan even though i support my home team CSK who will lift the cup finally, i support you, Deccan Chargers as you have to prove that you are worth as a competitor!

DC will play spoilers this time-just watch which all teams they take down with themselves-starting with pune today. Others team management: please pluck off dale steyn in next transfer/auction season

Posted by AjitDJ on (April 26, 2012, 4:59 GMT)

Next year DC owners will probably sell off Dhawan and Steyn too. And DC is also the saviour for all those domestic Indian players who could not get into any other team. DC will take all such players into their team, train them for 3 years, and then sell them off to other team at a higher price. IPL should seriously consider penalising team owners who look to make a profit just from sale and transfer of players and are not interested building a winning team.

Posted by   on (April 26, 2012, 4:53 GMT)

I dont know why with all the money you would buy the players deccan have.Delhi did the same mistake in IPL4 .But they recovered in IPL 5.The Deccan team is not good enough to win consistently based on ability on paper.@SurlyCynic u seem to know nothing much. India is yet to produce an all rounder like Shakib Al Hasan. So look before you leap.

God only can help DC. God did once by raining at eden getting DC one point. DC team - should better be scrapped.

Players keep shifting teams like Rohit, Gibbs, Symo, Venu, Ojha, Suman etc... but unfortunately, we poor fans don't seem to do that. We still stick to the home team. I guess for this season or until DC management shows serious interest in cricket, I probably stick with RR - who with few good local/foreign players are fighting out their bit. DC has probably becoming Deccan chargers to 'Dis Chargers'... I wish this team loses (they probably dont seem to win a match anyway) all the matches this yr, learn a strong lesson and get good players. Poor Steyn, he would have been better of playing a good side than DC. Rayudu doing wonders in MI team, we might soon see him in Indian team. that's opportunity MI team creates for youngsters.. why would some one stick with a pathetic team like DC ????

DC management - please, revise your strategy and make a good team.

Mushfique Junayed Khurshid bhai - liked your answer good one. Being an Indian, still appreciate the 'nicely giving back's mode. Keep this going.

It's been suggested before, and I will say it again - Just drop Daniel Christian. He may be talented but I don't remember him winning a match on his own. There seems to be plenty of negativity in the team, all thanks to the team management. Anyways looking forward to the London Olympics.

Pune Warrior has to to be careful against Steyn. Pune should not loose any wicket against Dale Steyn in his first two overs. If they will be able to do that half of the job is done.Pune should play Ashok Dinda ,if he is fit. Dada should come at number 6. batting order should be: 1. ryder 2.manish 3.Robin Utthapa 4. Luke Wright 5.Steve Smith 6.Dada 7. Murli Krthik 8.Alfonso 9.Nehra 10. Dinda 11. Rahul Sharma

What a pathetic team DC has become, rejoicing at the lucky solitary point. It is time they dump all Aussies and get others. Among Indians, they need to dump Chipli and Jaggi. They are poised to get the bottom position for the second time, and this time they may do it in a style - by not winning any game.
