Punjab v Mumbai, IPL 2012, Mohali April 25, 2012

The over that cost Punjab the match

ESPNcricinfo staff
The 19th over of the chase, bowled by Piyush Chawla, cost Kings XI Punjab 27 runs and the match. Here's how it happened
  shares 21

18.1 - Chawla to Peterson, FOUR, the reverse sweep! He was in position early, friendly length ball and he swung that down to third man

18.2 - Chawla to Peterson, FOUR, this is getting closer! Chawla makes the mistake of dropping short and this was close to the Switch Hit, turns the other way and clubs it down to deep extra cover

18.3 - Chawla to Peterson, SIX, wham! What are we in for here? The conventional slog this time, tossed up on middle and leg and Peterson gets on his knee and slams that over deep midwicket

18.4 - Chawla to Peterson, 1 run, another reverse sweep! But didn't time it well, hammered it down to cover, quick single, scampered to the crease and beat the throw

18.5 - Chawla to Rayudu, SIX, 21 runs and counting! Chawla tosses it up outside off and Rayudu takes a few paces forward and lofts him crisply rows over long-off

A jolted Hussey comes over to Chawla. The bowler is, well, speechless. Peterson was under-utilised with the ball and with the bat, well, he's teaching his captain a lesson

18.6 - Chawla to Rayudu, SIX, 27 off the over! What a nightmare for Chawla! Rayudu is still merciless as he chips down the track and launches him rows over long-on, it's down to 5 off 6 balls

Common piyush had an off day (one bad over) and he gets thrashed. he is way better than bhajji at the moment. Give that kid some time to learn form his mistakes.

why was not harmeet singh allowed to bowl ??? ... in fact he didn't bowl at all in the match....

  • on April 26, 2012, 11:26 GMT

@Hound Hounder: The reason why people do not go crazy over Bhajji's captaincy is that his captaincy is never the reason for winning the match. Taking this match as an example, I would say that Bhajji was lucky that his team won the match. He only gave Peterson 1 over, that went for only 3 runs. Common wisdom would say Bhajji should have bowled atleast one more over to see if Peterson had fluked it, or he was on the spot today. Rather, he kept on giving the bowling to a certain Munaf Patel, who loves bowling pace that a T20 batsman will love. Also, why did he keep Peterson down at number 8, when we all know that he slams the ball much, much harder than Bhajji with more consistency. I think those two fours and a six are enough to show that he is worth sending at number 6 or 7. Ganguly on the other hand...I don't think I need to tell about him. He leads from the front...always. That is why people go crazy over his captaincy.

This happened in the match CSK Vs RCB. Morkel did the same, turned the match against RCB

All the national level Indian spinners (Bhajji, Chawla, Mishra, Ashwin, Rahul et al) are all doing badly, or is steadily on the decline. For that matter, the pacers too -- Pravin, Zaheer, Vinay et al. Pray, let me know five Indian bowlers Dhoni can rely on to take 20 wickets, if a test match is scheduled soon after this IPL!

Why does KXIP play Ramesh Powar? He has a amazing economy rate and has been good in most games he played! He is way better than Chawla, though is not the best in the field!

I don't think None of the indian spinners can handle pressure and bowl proactively. Having one over left, the penultimate over has to be bowled with full charge. Here and there edges which gives 4 is okay. but not like this. you need to be sensible. even in street cricket, when a batsmen hits 2 boundaries then in the 3rd ball bowler will have aggression and make an impact on the batsmen. I hvn't seen anything like that in any of the spinners in india except anil kumble. India cannot win a match even if they score 500 runs in 50 overs as we have enough bowlers to compensate the runs. Right now Dinda, Umesh is bowling well. Vaarun has to be given a chance to evaluate him. Spin dept is worst now...with bhajji going for a toss and ashwin not getting the rhythm...we hv left only with ohja. probably ashwin can make a come back...

I think Chawla is overrated player. Why so much hyped is created when an average bowler went for runs.

  • on April 26, 2012, 6:10 GMT

You Play Good For 38 overs you are on top of the game you are in the drivers sit and one over turns the fortune, thats T20 Cricket

  • abhijeet1in on April 26, 2012, 5:11 GMT

Piyush Chawla 27 in 1 over, Rahul Sharma 31 in 1 over, Amit Mishra generally garbage. Lets face it, leg spin is dead in India. I don't think there was much wrong with David Hussey's decision to bowl Chawla. Personally i would not pick Piyush in a under-10 girls team, but considering Peterson is no Gayle and Rayudu is no Dhoni, and Piyush being a national team veteran (!),... why should Hussey be called out for trusting his strike (supposedly) spinner. This is just one more reason for five foreign players in IPL and allowing under-19s too. Maybe then the pressure of (non)selection will make the second/third string indian players to step it up.

The plot was lost when Hussey had Piyush bowl the penultimate over which is more critical than the last over. We all recall several spinner ripped apart in the last two overs the world ove in ODI and T20I. He should have saved another medium pacer for the last two overs.

Wow.... Pieterson is proved again as a match winnner. Please see his innings in world cup match againest India (Bajji should know what Robin capable of of). Wonderful to see Ambati back in form (good lesson to those, who send Ambati to Baroda Team)

  • AndyZaltzmannsHair on April 25, 2012, 18:36 GMT

If this today is the average standard of bowling in the IPL, aka full tosses and nothing length balls then I'm glad I havent been following it. The bowling from both sides was atrocious. It's embarrassing seeing a bowler bowl three consecutive leg side knee high full tosses. And its even more embarrassing hearing Rameez Raja on air praise the batsmen as if he's played the greatest shot ever by hitting it over short fine legs head.

piyush chawla worstr legspinner i have seen in my life ....

  • on April 25, 2012, 17:58 GMT

He has no variety in his bowling and also not that much turn after pitching. He needs to learn from Kumble and Shane Warne so many things; like Yorker, fast ball, more turn after pitching. If he is good in bowling India can utilize him as an all-rounder. Otherwise he will continue in internal matches only.

  • on April 25, 2012, 17:12 GMT

Hey this is Mayhem FOr Chawla..His captain looked to him as frontline baller who will successfully defend 32 Runs against 12 Balls this man gave away 27 in 6 Balls.......

  • on April 25, 2012, 17:07 GMT

well peterson showed his skills in WC 2011 against India. He likes batting in India.

  • on April 25, 2012, 16:43 GMT

once again one over changed the outcome of the match...hats of to peterson & rayudu...IPL rocks...

  • rsurya on April 25, 2012, 16:19 GMT

Well those who saw pieterson bat in tv could say how he could hit the ball at the death overs, why not the captain take some time knowing their players capability. Pieterson bowled 1 over and batted after baaji. If baaji was not out then it would have cost mumbai a match. Baaji and hussey both should have some captainship training.
