Deccan Chargers v Pune Warriors, IPL 2012, Cuttack April 30, 2012

Can Pune kickstart recovery?

Match facts

Tuesday, May 1, Cuttack
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

Big Picture

Pune Warriors' previous match was a home game against Deccan Chargers which they lost giving Chargers their first win. Losing points to bottom-placed Chargers will put pressure on Warriors as the race to finish in the top four gets tighter. After their win in Delhi, Warriors were third from the top; now, they are third from the bottom.

Chargers' chances in the tournament are diminishing fast and a top-four finish is highly unlikely as apart from Dale Steyn, there haven't been enough quality performances. Ironically, their only win came when Steyn was rested.

Warriors will be boosted by the inclusion of Michael Clarke who is making his first appearance in the IPL. If he is included in the XI, it will be interesting to see who he replaces. Clarke will bring further stability to the batting line-up. Although Sourav Ganguly will have to think about where to slot him in the order. Further, if Clarke plays, will Ganguly drop himself down the order?

Jesse Ryder and Steven Smith have been the most aggressive for Warriors, but in some games, Smith's impact was reduced due to him batting low in the order.

Chargers have come up with two surprising selection moves in the last two games. While Steyn was rested in Pune, Kumar Sangakkara sat out in Mumbai. In Cuttack, where the pitch should be completely different from the the green one in Mumbai, there might be another surprise from the Chargers camp.

Players to watch

Robin Uthappa is the leading run scorer for Pune Warriors this season. However, his strike rate of 117.72 is much lower than previous seasons. He has only hit seven sixes in the season, but with two important points to be had, Uthappa might rise to the occasion with big shots.

For a batman of the class of JP Duminy, he should be spending maximum time in the middle. Out of the five innings he has played for Chargers, he has remained unbeaten in four. He showed glimpses of his ability in the match against Rajasthan Royals. A potential matchwinner, Duminy contributes with this handy offspin and sharp fielding as well.

Stats and trivia

  • Robin Uthappa has played 68 IPL games, only four less than S Badrinath and Suresh Raina's tally of 72.
  • Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa's 145-run unbeaten partnership against Delhi Daredevils is the highest this season.

"It was unusual to change the captain, isn't it? That's the way it happened.."
Cameron White on Kumar Sangakkara's exclusion in the last game

"It seems like he's doing a really good job as captain-coach over there, I've spoken to a couple of the boys and they seem to be really happy about how things are. So, yeah, for me it's an eye-opener."
Michael Clarke is impressed with Sourav Ganguly's leadership

y mishra and patel in the side ?? criiteria should not be like , one who played for national side..........

  • Shijith on May 1, 2012, 10:00 GMT

i think pune shoul give monish mishra a chance in place of Mithun manhas as mishra is a better suited played in slog overs than mithun manhas.Uthappa has to show some urgency while batting.

Clarke has been taken by PWI for the future captiancy role, since the original captain Yuvraj may or may not play, and in any case was not exceptional in leading the side, while Ganguly will certainly be benched in the next season, or offered a mentor role, like he was at KKR, which if he is smart, will accept, else we'll see a repeat of the KKR-Ganguly estrangement, with the Dada loyalists screaming another betrayal! ;-D

Clarke is not T20 material but there can be a place for one leader who could control the game, which clarke can certainly do since he has age on his side, and possibly improve his T20 strike rate. A lot of Test batsmen have done it, like Kallis so Clarke could evolve in the next edition. Ganguly in such a case would be adventitious to PWI plans!

Go DC !!! The main weakness of the DC is their Bowling and Batting at death but the good point is that can be changed . For bowling take both steyn and Theron . During batting end Duminy and White around 13/14th over. Sange is a better player than white but still he shud be rested. My XI order1.dhawan 2.patel 3.chipli 4.White 5.Duminy 6.jhunjhunwala 7.sohal 8.Mishra 9.A reddy 10.Theron 11.Steyn with the above team u can get a batting line up till 9 which is most important in a T20 sohal is agressive batsmen so depending on situation he can be promoted :)

Warriors are in good shape actually, butTheere are 2 mistakes which warriors have repeatedly done which have led them to where they are now. 1 Smith not getting enough overs to bat.. Smith is not just a hitter he can also play good stable innings with more than a reasonable strike rate 2) Uthappa eating out half of the overs with a 100 strike rate. Uthappa is batting good and can be considered for one day , but in T20s his new style doesent work. its well evident from the fact that in the matches that he have contributed a lot of runs Pune has lost. So My point will be Chuck out Uthappa bring Clarke in and make sure Smith and pandey bat in the first four. I would say Dada can still open the innings and make maximum use of field restriction along With Ryder and followed by pandey and Smith. Clarke will fit in at numebr 5 giving the team a much needed stability factor and Manhas looks in tremendous touch he is also a good bet before samuels who doesent look in great form currently

Sanga should keep the wickets and MUST PLAY EVERY GAME!! Go Go Go Go CHARGERS!!!

  • Robin on May 1, 2012, 9:45 GMT

If Sangakara not playing this game, DC will get the same old result. Surely Sangakara should be in the team. He is much better captain than White. If Sangkara play this game surely he will pull another win for DC. Ganguly should be the captain for PW even he fails with the bat. Experience and quality will click at any time for both players.

In today cricket there is only one class bowler dale steyn. He is class apart I enjoys watching him bowl. His over against MI to sachin and rohit was absolute class. He is unfortunately playing in DC. He is the only bright spot in otherwise dull DC team.
