Clash of the table toppers in Delhi

Match facts

Monday, May 7
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Only one point separates Delhi Daredevils from Kolkata Knight Riders and a win for the Knight Riders will take them to the lead. The teams met at the start of the tournament, but not many would have expected at that stage that these two would be the powerhouses as the league approaches the playoffs. The rain-affected game at Eden Gardens was reduced to 12 overs a side, during which Knight Riders managed 97 for 9. It was a comfortable eight-wicket win for Daredevils, a sign of things to come as they strengthened their position in the table over the coming weeks.

Daredevils have dropped just one game at the Feroz Shah Kotla this season. A big reason for their reversal of form from last season was Kevin Pietersen, who left after smashing 305 runs in eight innings, including a century. Pietersen will join England for the home series against West Indies, but his replacement is the equally intimidating David Warner. The Australian opener wasn't at his best on the sluggish pitches in the West Indies which tested his patience. Still, he managed respectable returns of 171 runs in the three Tests. He will relish the batting highways in India, starting with the Kotla, which has been a high-scoring venue this season.

Knight Riders are coming off a hard-fought win against Pune Warriors. They managed to defend a middling 150, thanks to their varied bowling attack which offered the best of raw pace and mystery spin. However, their middle and lower batting remains a concern as they crumbled after a century opening stand. Gautam Gambhir would hope that the batting finally comes good in this game as the bowlers will need the cushion against Daredevils.

Players to watch

One of the fascinating contests of Knight Riders' match against Warriors was Sunil Narine v Sourav Ganguly who for all his experience against spin, was at sea against Narine's viscious spin. With figures of 1 for 13 in four overs, Narine took the Man-of-the-Match award. Will he be able to silence the likes of Virender Sehwag and Warner as well?

With 91 runs from seven innings, Daredevils' Ross Taylor is yet to show up. Fortunately, his lack of form hasn't affected the team's results. But in Pietersen's absence, Taylor's role will be important.

Stats and trivia

  • Virender Sehwag needs 18 more runs to overtake Ajinkya Rahane for the Orange Cap in this IPL.
  • David Warner made 324 runs in 13 games for Daredevils last season.

    Quotes

"I am pretty sure I'll be opening up with Viru and will try to continue the success we have had in previous years."
    David Warner

"We messed up big time. The kind of start we had with the depth in batting we could have easily got past 180. It's time the batsmen pulled up their socks.
Gautam Gambhir on his side's shortcomings against Warriors.

I agree with all my Shakib fans, but please take note: (1) Shakib is struggling in the 20 format of the game; (2) Rank does not determine whether you can play in a situation or not. (3) Shakib is been termed as not a team player by many international magazines in UK, South Africa and Australia...therefore the other foreign players are unable to adjust to Shakib being in the playing XI. (4) Shakib is in amazing form in ODI and Test, he has out performed everyone in BD...it's a great achievement. (5) McMullun can't be removed as KKR needs a wicketkeeper, can't play without a wicketkeeper (6) They can't replace Narine because Shakib admittedly can't bowl better than Narine (7) They can't replace Bisla or Kallis because he strike the bowler much better than shakib, but both of them look out of form right now. (8) You can't replace Bret Lee, if you knew anything about cricket, you wouldn't even think about that. You need a greater seam bowler, shakib is not a seam bowler.

  • BenGman on May 7, 2012, 16:41 GMT

@Dr.Hassan.Malik Your stats are outdated. Umar Gul was the first to get 5W in a T20I but now there are 4 others with 5W and Mendis has 6W in a T20I. @BangladeshiSupporters. Please remember that a maximum of 4 foreign players per game AND a WICKET KEEPER must play in your squad selections. So Sakib without Mc Cullum/Bisla/Haddin would not be considered.

  • Ibra95 on May 7, 2012, 16:36 GMT

    150. OK. Hope DD can defend it and get early wkts. Irfan VS Yousuf hope I can see it.

  • on May 7, 2012, 14:26 GMT

Aaron's inclusion in DD will make them best fast bowling unit of IPL ever.

  • shovwar on May 7, 2012, 14:13 GMT

To all the BD friends...Why are u guys worrying about Sakib not playing? If you are a KKR fan then dont worry cos they are winning and you dont wanna mess with the winning formula. And if you are a Sakib fan be happy that he is getting rest while being paid...The last thing that anyone of u would want is Sakib get flushed out or get injured for IPL. Any 20/20 premier league is for fun and should not be taken seriously. Especially when the 20/20 wc is knocking on the door. Country duty comes first so its better if player is not overly used in IPL. Plus if KKR is winning why would they need No.1 allrounder in the world yet...They should use him when they need him. I m sure they will. I would always keep a good back up incase something misfires. And KKR has the luxury to do that at the moment. No doubt is the best at what he does.

I know breaking a winning combination is not easy. But I think Iqbal Abdullah, Yusuf Pathan and Shukla had more than enough chances. Even McCullum has not done enough... Hard to believe it is the same man who made 158 in a T20 game! It's time to give Tendo/Shakib/Shami Ahmed some more games.

  • SwingIsKing on May 7, 2012, 14:07 GMT

Soooo... why isn't Eoin Morgan the 3rd Best t20 batsmen in the ODI rankings not playing? Any reason or just no spaces?

  • cfazle on May 7, 2012, 14:06 GMT

KKR management should consider Shakib instead of McCullam or Kallis. Shakib can be effective in both batting and bowling. And don't judge him with only one bad game. Give him plenty of chances as you guys are giving chances to Kallis, McCullam an Yousuf. You might win plenty of games but surely not for the contribution of above mentioned players. I don't see any of these get man of the match except Shakiib.

@ micky tool. I am agree with you. Kolkata Playing so good without Shakib. But its so bad to see that No 1 Allrounder Shakib is out of best XI. I think he will do well replace of Mccullum. Casue Mccullum strike rate is so low. Bisla is good hitter. I thats XI is so strong- Gambhir, Kallis, M Tirwary, Shakib, Bisla, Abdullah, Narine, Brett lee, Debrata Das, Shukla, Bhatia....

  • on May 7, 2012, 13:31 GMT

@Micky... I think those guys whining about Shakib are not any worse than the ones who hate KKR because they dropped Ganguly (rightfully) last year and support PWI more than KKR despite being Kolkata residents. This individual worship is maddening and annoying.

  • Mayan820 on May 7, 2012, 13:30 GMT

I am a South African and, therefore, an avid Protea supporter, but I am going to say this. If I am a star player with a proven track record nobody can refute, and I am just ignored like the KKR franchise is doing to S. Al Hasan, I will certainly get annoyed. This is what I will do if I was him: When they eventually choose me to bail the team out of desperate trouble (which KKR will be in very shortly if I know anything, at all, about proffesional T20 cricket), I will go and win those matches for them not saying a word. Next year, however, during the IPL auctions, at the time when KKR management will just assume that I will be available for them, I will make myself only available to to be picked up by any one of the remaining franchises (not KKR), UNLESS the latter agrees to pay me 3 times the amount I will make myself available to to the others. This way I will ensure that if KKR do pick me up, that they will simply not be able to justify my purchase price without playing me.

  • on May 7, 2012, 13:14 GMT

stop whinning abt Shakib and Shakib..Just face the Fact He aint playing..KKR is doing well without him..Bad luck for him tht Narine is playing very well and KKR bowling has been superb..so people who was whinning tht KKR cannot win without Shakib..Eat it...enjoy the game..

  • Rally_Windies on May 7, 2012, 13:08 GMT

Warner won't face Narine, Narine, won't open, that is wasting him ... his 4 overs are two to choke in the middle and two at the death ....

  • Rally_Windies on May 7, 2012, 13:04 GMT

@ mithu.bd Sakib is good, but he cannpt replace Narine in the Team ..

when Sakib bowls and gets better figures than Narine, remember that Sakib never bowls in the last four overs... and Narine is ALWAYS bowls two of the last four ...

T&T and the WI use him the same way.....

we should get an analysis of bowling stats in the last 4 overs of 20/20 games...

I am sure, Malinga and Narine will be the best ...(Steyn should bowl out at the top, he does not do well at the death)

  • AnSee on May 7, 2012, 13:04 GMT

It will be interesting to see how KKR operate if Gambhir falls cheaply today. He has been literally carrying KKR all through the tournament.

  • Rally_Windies on May 7, 2012, 12:59 GMT

Warner could not Play Narine in the ODI's in the WI ....

Sehwag, blasted Narine in the ODI's in India on his way to 200 ... but then he blasted everybody, and Narine was able to slow him down a bit, albeit not stop him.

I don't expect much from the Warner/ Narine battle ...

but the Sehwag/Narine battle will be nice to watch ...

  • dare_to_beat on May 7, 2012, 12:54 GMT

looks like shakib and morgan are enjoying holidays in India...YKP should be replaced by bisla

  • Baundele on May 7, 2012, 12:49 GMT

All I want for Shakib is a proper rest, do not spend your effort for this circus. If the IPL were cricket and Shakib were playing regularly as an allrounder, he would not have any competitor is becoming the best player of the IPL. But the KKR management will continue with out of form McCullum and Kallis (I like both of them, though) and the only thing Shakib can do is relax and prepare for some cricket. Getting some money is a plus.

  • Baundele on May 7, 2012, 12:44 GMT

McCullum and Kallis are doing a wonderful job. They are scoring at 97 and 98 runs per 100 deliveries. Therefore, they should be the automatic choices for all valid cricketing reasons. Shakib, RTD, Eoin Morgan etc. are just fringe players, they do not even know how to hold a bat properly. ;)

  • on May 7, 2012, 12:18 GMT

sakib was allowed to play three IPL matches and instead of becoming man of the match for all three of them, failed miserably and was man match for one game only!! does not matter if some one fails ten matches, still he(eg: yusuf) is a match winner and must play all matches!! what KKR management will gain by keeping Sakib outside (who is the best ODI & Test all rounder in the world) and hurting millions and millions of cricket lovers in the world?

  • DaniMajo on May 7, 2012, 12:08 GMT

I think B Lee should play today.

  • on May 7, 2012, 12:03 GMT

I thought SRT played well yesterday.. but who am I say about cricket and the 'Curse of Sachin' that is hanging over India as a whole now a days...

  • IJ-IPL on May 7, 2012, 11:52 GMT

@ bd_cric_lover, first of all, I am not an indian, I am from UK, second of all, I don't think the Indians rock IPL, so will never put that as my status (though some of them are performing beautiful - but only some of them), rest of the IPL is the charm and the show of the international players. and BD-rocks-IPL because, I want shakib and tamin to play in the IPL, there is alot for them to learn from the IPL. With the knowledge from IPL, they help our BD team to improve by leaps and bounds and we can then stop depending upon the lucky wins that we have because of the performance of a few players. Shakib has got a great opportunity to earn some extra bucks and learn from many upcoming indian players as well as foreign players in the IPL. This will help to grow in the T20 career also where he is still struggling. then he will not only be ranked no. 1 in ODI and Test but also in T20. Tamin will also be learning alot under the rule of Ganguly. I hope flourishes after he comes back to BD.

  • Whaaz on May 7, 2012, 11:50 GMT

Hey @Mithu.BD, Relax bruv, in IPL there is a rule of only 4 foreign player wil be played, 1> Jacques Kallis 2> Sunil Narine 3> Marchant de Lange / Bret Lee 4> Brendon McCullum - > there is only 1 option for Saqib IN Brendon McCullum OUT, But this a tough decision in today's match, we also want to see Saqib play for the team, but....

  • landsite on May 7, 2012, 11:48 GMT

Narine only has 4 overs to bowl and his job will be to keep the opposition down to a minimum of 25 or 30 runs, that in my opinion is very good for any bowler a wicket or 2 will be even better but 20/20 is about keeping the runs down.So far Narine has made several test batsmen look silly and that is not something we see everyday,on another point could KKR pick anybody instead of Useless Pathan,I am certain that Lee would do better with both bat and ball, keep de Lange,if not Shakib could replace Mr.Useless Pathan.

  • on May 7, 2012, 11:44 GMT

the best XI for KKR is - 1. Gambhir , 2. Morgan , 3. R.ten Doeschate, 4. Bisla , 5 . D Das, 6 . M.Tiwary 7. Y.Pathan/L Shukhla 8. R Bhatia, 9. b.lee / De Lange , 10. sunil narine , 11. Balaji/Sangwan/I abdullah (depending on the pitch)...........................Morgan is explosive...RTD is an allround matchwiner......KKR shouldnt play kallis as he is slow while batting and can be unreliable while bowling....no MCullum coz he is not in the best of forms................

  • vickytheboss on May 7, 2012, 11:37 GMT

@Dev9212 : Did you see yesterdays match? SRT vs CSK? Dont say that he has no place for ODI. He always Have. This match is not related to SRT, then why re you guys keep on criticising him.

  • on May 7, 2012, 11:34 GMT

kkr is too rich! they bought a lot of foreign players! now the ipl 5 is drawing to a close but not all the foreign players are given an equal chance! surprising no morgan! shakib in for balaji! watch the kkr play! its gonna be awesme todayyyy!

  • imran_aziz on May 7, 2012, 11:28 GMT

All BD and Shakib fans, have you watched that almost all comments are about Shakib that he should be included in the team? Do you think the KKR Management does not know this? But they will not let him play, it is a problem that lies with their mind.....moreover they lost to BD in Asia Cup mainly for Shakib. So why should they let number one all rounder to move forward? About Gautam Gambhir....it is my challenge how many persons know his name and Shakib's name?Gambhir has not a nice mind, he is a jealous kind of person. I am sure Shakib is more popular......He is a real Gladiator!!!!!

  • on May 7, 2012, 11:24 GMT

Taylor's role in this game should be sitting on the bench. He has now had 7 games and failed to make 30 in any of them. Play Russell or Van Der Merwe and the team will be stronger.

  • pai11 on May 7, 2012, 11:20 GMT

@mithu.bd: will you please take a promise that you will not post comments until "THAT DAY" arrives.. thank you...

  • rsurya on May 7, 2012, 11:17 GMT

Sehwag and Warner opening will be a mistake upfront, there are chances of both of them getting out soon. let Sehwag and Jaya open and if sehwag falls early then let warner come in. otherwise sehwag will see through the innings. Andre Russel instead of Ross Taylor will be a good move. Delhi will make a close win tonight.

  • on May 7, 2012, 11:14 GMT

yusuf need not b dropped i guess its better to play him down d ordr promote tiwary nd shukla no othr changes needed fr kkr

  • on May 7, 2012, 11:07 GMT

Lot of hype over this match. Both the strong contenders for this IPL#5 going to meet and I am sure this is going to be most tough match for both the teams. If anyone of the team had better day means they can win. Interesting point is both Viru and Gambir close to the orange cap. If viru will extend his form means he can get in other way if GG clicks he can get as well. Based on the current form Viru, Rahane can open GG can follow. There is no place for SRT in one day and T20 formats. Narine already mentioned so far only Viru picked him and I hope this is going to be the interesting contest between Viru and Narine. Irfan will face some early hittings from GG and he need to be well aware of this. Best of luck to both GG and Viru.

  • Dev9212 on May 7, 2012, 10:59 GMT

All Shakib fans one bad news with Balaji injured the KKR management cant drop Lee or DeLange as there is no genuine Indian seamer in the KKR squad and I dont think that they will drop Kallis even though he has had a pretty disappointing series.

  • XP79303 on May 7, 2012, 10:41 GMT

McCullum should be replaced by Bisla, KKR may verify Sakib by opening with Gouti. Sakib & Nari bowling combination will be perfect. KKR should more attack with spin rather than pace attack. My team selection 1. Gouti 2. Sakib 3. Kallis 4.Yousuf 5 Bisla 6. Tiwary 7. Das 8 Bhatia 9 Narine 10 De Lange 11 Balaji.

  • SamAsh07 on May 7, 2012, 10:40 GMT

KKR must play extraordinary cricket if they DD.....coz DD have been the best this season.....I think they should try out Shakib and leave out Yusuf......it will bring the solidity in the middle order.....and of course de Lange should share the new ball with Lee if possible!! the last overseas player should be either Macculam or Kallis!!

  • on May 7, 2012, 9:56 GMT

warner,viru,mahela,taylor,pathan........... kolkata cant stop them.closed match but delhi'll win.

  • Stylechan on May 7, 2012, 9:32 GMT

@Slick_Skilllzzz: You included 5 overseas players in DD lineup.. they would love to do that if possible!

  • dmqi on May 7, 2012, 9:31 GMT

No Yousuf Pathan for sure, Gambhir has got his lesson half way as he said batsmen needs to score more runs. 3 consecutive sixes means good bowling right? Now will he play Sakib? No Sakib means KKR looses. My prediction.

  • on May 7, 2012, 9:28 GMT

LR Shukla should be given an oppurtunity up the order ahead of Pathan and Manoj. LR has been in stupendous form this season especially with the bat. Man of the tournament in Vijay Hazare trophy. Some of the national selectors have mentioned getting back the India cap is not too far away. He is a man with fire under his belly and blowing hot, should be given oppurtunities ASAP

  • on May 7, 2012, 9:14 GMT

the best XI for KKR is -

    1. Gambhir , 2. McCullum , 3. R.ten Doeschate, 4. Bisla , 5 . D Das, 6 . M.Tiwary 7. Y.Pathan/L Shukhla 8. R Bhatia, 9. b.lee / De Lange , 10. sunil narine , 11. Balaji/Sangwan/I abdullah (depending on the pitch)

Bhatia, lee , sunil , abdullah and R ten doeschate along with Shukhla can bowl but plz.. no KALLIS

    quite excited about he match

  • AhaanSM on May 7, 2012, 9:13 GMT

I would say that the Daredevils have the advantage. The batting line up fot them should be 1)David Warner 2)V. Sehwag 3)R. Taylor 4)M. Jayawerdene 5)N. Ojha 6)I. Pathan 7)A. Russel 8)Y. Nagar 9)P.Negi 10)S.Nadeem 11)U.Yadav They should play 3 seamers and 2 spinners. Depth in batting.Morne should be given rest.

  • mrrd on May 7, 2012, 9:08 GMT

My DD team was SHEWAG,WARNER,N.OJHA,ROSS TAYLOR,VENUGOPAL RAO,NAGAR,RUSSELL,IRFAN PATHAN,M.MORKEL,NEGI,NADEEM. This my favourite Delhi team for the entire remaining mathes till FINAL.

  • on May 7, 2012, 9:08 GMT

If I were TASekhar, I would drop Taylor and bring in either Finch; he was pretty much going berzerk before the likes of KP and Mahela came. And pls dont play Agarkar, Pawan Negi even if that spell of 4-18 was one off, is still better than Agarkar.

  • naths on May 7, 2012, 8:49 GMT

  • on May 7, 2012, 8:45 GMT

First 6 overs if sehwag stick on the field then Daredevils will get good score to defend KKR.

  • on May 7, 2012, 8:21 GMT

Sakib for Yusuf, Bisla for McCullum. Line up then is: Kallis, Gambhir, Bisla, Tiwary, Das, Sakib, Shukla, Bhatia, Narine, de Lange, Abdulla

  • nipun027 on May 7, 2012, 7:47 GMT

I would like 2 see Morgan replacing McCullim.............

  • pai11 on May 7, 2012, 7:45 GMT

2 berths for play offs are sealed -DD & KKR. the rest have to play for 2 more berths.. CSK would have to win 3 of their 4 remaining matches to be assured a place. but 2 of their matches are against DD & KKR. so might be tough for them.. RCB must win 3 of their 5 matches of which 2 are against DC & PWI. so they might fancy their chances. MI play KKR & RCB twice & RR once in their remaining matches. so they need to up the ante to qualify. KXIP need to win 3 of their 5 matches. they can hope to win 2 against DC & need to surprise DD or CSK to qualify. the best chance is to RR. they have 2 matches against PWI & 1 against DC. they can qualify if they play to their potential. so interesting times ahead....

  • Arun_infou on May 7, 2012, 7:42 GMT

    Kolkata will win the match......

  • Slick_Skilllzzz on May 7, 2012, 7:37 GMT

Im a KKR fan however Delhi have been the in form team this season so i'm a bit worried. The teams should be KKR- McCullum, Gambhir, Kallis, Pathan, Tiwary, Das, Shukla, Bhatia, Narine, Lee, Abdulla. DD- Sehwag, Warner, Jawardene, Taylor, Russell, Nagar, N. Ojha, Pathan, Negi, M. Morkel, Nadeem, Yadav. Pathan could open with McCullum. I'm a KKR supporter but Delhi do have the upper hand.

  • on May 7, 2012, 7:35 GMT

    MY KKR SQUAD TODAY 1)gambhir 2)Bisla 3)das 4)kallis 5)Morgan 6)Tiwary 7)Sakib 8)Bhatia 9)Balaji 10)narine 11)Unakad

  • pai11 on May 7, 2012, 7:34 GMT

both the teams have good players warming the bench. so whichever team wins can be rest assured of a place in play-offs and hopefully will give those "benched" players a chance to perform...

  • on May 7, 2012, 7:21 GMT

The match will be competitive but KKR should be able to win it if their bowlers can get Sehwag out cheaply. Furthermore, Sehwag is so unpredictable because earlier in this season, he was struggling with the bat but one inning changed all that and now he seems to have regained his form.

  • pk100 on May 7, 2012, 7:15 GMT

Drop yusuf n bring bisla. Bisla is in good form. giving more chances to yusuf is worthless.

  • Bunty.Cricket on May 7, 2012, 6:59 GMT

Going by the current form, I think this match will most likely be the rehearsal for the IPL 5 finals.. Eagerly waiting to see the contest between Narine & Sehwag/Mahela.. I think it's time KKR replace BM with Sahib

  • on May 7, 2012, 6:56 GMT

SRK's KKR is awesome now.. Sunil Narine will get MOM too. viru, warner, taylor or mahela doesn't matter. becoz we have Lee, Narine and Kallis as well to manage.. at the time Ghambir also unstoppable.

  • raves1027 on May 7, 2012, 6:54 GMT

This will be a good contest to watch.. Gambhir vs Sehwag.. the only two skippers leading from the front to take their teams home and sitting at the top of the crowded points table so comfortably.. A lot will depend on how the middle order and the lower middle order of KKR repond today..

  • sampi72 on May 7, 2012, 6:47 GMT

Mahela Jayawardane will be the man to watch against the best bowler in this IPL Sunil Narine.....

  • mahafuz1983 on May 7, 2012, 6:39 GMT

@Bangladesh-rocks-ipl...as a Bangladeshi I also beg u come on bro don't be desparate and destroy our image...we know Shakib is a champion and brings glory to Bangladesh, and that's all counts....nevermind...CLASH OF THE TITANS...drop lange and bring back lee....its a flat wicket...so drop abdullah and bring back Balaji....we r good to go....we win toss...we bat first....we are a bowling team so lets play to our strength...couple of more wins and we can rest some players for the playoffs or experiment some other combination

  • jitender_godara on May 7, 2012, 6:37 GMT

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on May 7, 2012, 6:14 GMT

I strongly feel DD is going to win this encounter.

  • yogezsh on May 7, 2012, 6:05 GMT

no doubt Pietersen have contributed tremendously for Daredevils but Sehwag have contributed more for Delhi but you have no mention of Serhwag........????????????????

  • IJ-IPL on May 7, 2012, 6:04 GMT

please please, I am begging you this time please please please play Shakib. I mean he is not that great, I know, but i think this match is a perfect opportunity for Shakib to be given a chance to play with such great players. I think KKR is now in a good position and they can afford to take big risks. Please please i am begging you. I know it's not BPL, but still Shakib can't get a chance in the play offs or finals with other world class players, but these few matches KKR can afford to play him.

if warner - viru open the innings, warner can fill mahela's slot. bt mahela can't substitute rampant kp. viru can't swing his bat that freely now. lets c. if gambhir fails, kkr is in deep trouble. lot depends on kkr's openers 2day.
