Big Picture

The contrast between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians was there to see on Monday. Knight Riders' batting, dependent so much on Gautam Gambhir's golden run this season, lost momentum after his dismissal against Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai Indians' line-up recovered from 51 for 5 to chase down 172 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

After a run of six consecutive wins, Knight Riders lost their previous two games while Mumbai Indians racked up consecutive wins. Rohit Sharma's fluent hitting stunned Knight Riders the first time these sides met this season on May 12 at the Eden Gardens.

Mumbai Indians return to Wankhede Stadium after two away games. They have lost four out of seven home matches this season, and Harbhajan Singh has said that they haven't known what to expect from the Wankhede pitch.

Both teams would want to finish in the top two to boost their chances of making the final and avoid the eliminator. Knight Riders' loss to Mumbai Indians in their final league game last season dragged them down to fourth position; they then went on to lose the eliminator to third-placed Mumbai Indians.

Sachin Tendulkar could miss the match as he is expected to take his oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha in New Delhi.

Watch out for

Mumbai Indians' on-field behaviour has been appalling this season. Their captain, Harbhajan Singh, not known for his calmness, has been involved in a confrontation with umpires, as has been Munaf Patel. Munaf has, in fact, been downright boorish, having repeated arguments with umpires and several batsmen. Ambati Rayudu was the latest transgressor on Monday, losing his entire match fee for his bust-up with Harshal Patel of Royal Challengers.

While Jacques Kallis is usually a steady scorer, this season has been a crawl even by his modest standards. A strike-rate of 104.94 in 13 innings has gone largely unnoticed due to Gambhir's brilliance. Kallis, however, has taken 10 wickets at an economy-rate of 7.45.

Stats and trivia

  • Gambhir has made six half-centuries this season. The rest of his team mates have just contributed three.
  • Mumbai Indians have a home win-loss ratio of 1.54 in the IPL; Knight Riders have an away win-loss ratio of 1.00.

    Quotes

"He had told me during the match that if I bat for 20 overs, I'd win the match. When I returned, he caught hold of me and said, 'I had told you so'."
Ambati Rayudu on what Sachin Tendulkar told him during the chase against Royal Challengers

Gd to see so many people stealing my cntral idea of shakib being d best of all times lolz

  • dummy4fb on May 16, 2012, 15:25 GMT

shakib is the best player in the history of the world. he is better than tendulkar gayle and de villiars. KKR should kick gambhir out and make shakib the opener! he'll get 100 in a over!

  • shiplu99 on May 16, 2012, 14:51 GMT

I think Kallis should be dropped. Ryan ten or any other boy can perform better than Kallis

  • Rally_Windies on May 16, 2012, 14:02 GMT

KKR lost becasue Lee was rested.....

Shakib should have played for Lee...not De Lange ...

  • dummy4fb on May 16, 2012, 13:58 GMT

kkr should pick up their winning streak! shakib should be in for shukla and lee for de lange

  • dummy4fb on May 16, 2012, 13:56 GMT

If Tendulkar doesnt play today.. its better to get in Franklin (no point in using Jacobs or Levi as they didnt live up to the expectations when ever a chance given in a raw...) and let Gibbs open with Smith.. rest is perfect... Another thing is MI should find a way to know about how their home ground behave at least nxt year, otherwise it will be a real joke.. hope MI do well today ...

I think Kalam Miya's middle-stump will go missing by Malinga's deadly yorker! Malinga --- today's man of the match? I think so even before the toss!!!

  • dummy4fb on May 16, 2012, 13:48 GMT

Both teams seem evenly matched. On a day when anything can happen my bet is on KKR with Sunil Narine putting in another excellent performance.Kallis ,Gambhir and Narine can win it.

  • dummy4fb on May 16, 2012, 13:44 GMT

MI will win this match. They have match winners like Rayudu, Sachin, Pollard & Rohit. Send Rayudu up in the batting order..Gr8 performance by Rayudu.

people are saying Narine is better than Shakib or Narine is the best spinner in the world .This is no way to tell that he is the best. The bottom line is that Narine is not a complete spinner. If u look at the world best off spinner like Harbhajan singh, syed ajmal ,murali or swann they got all the variations(doosra, teesra, armball, flight or loop etc). But Narine does have all of them. His only weapon is unreadable legspin or legcutter. This won't help him in future when he will face big teams like Australia, south africa ,england. They wont sit and just watch him. They will solve the mystery like ajantha mendis.Narine is yet to be tested in pacer pitch in South africa,England, austalia. In all these pitches Shakib has wonderful success as spinner. He got few times more than 5 wickets in there .More over he is a complete spinner.Definitely Narine is performing very well in IPL thats why he is well ahead any bowler in kkr.I do not wanna see Narine as ordinary bowler in future.BEST WISHES!
