It had all built up to that one moment. Gautam Gambhir, playing three spinners against the home side's decision to stick to three fast bowlers at the Wankhede Stadium, had hoped at the toss that the pitch would turn later. Kolkata Knight Riders had just about recovered from a horror start to post a decent 140. Mumbai Indians had found run-scoring as difficult as Knight Riders had, but had lost only two wickets at the halfway stage.

The last ball of the 11th over, Sunil Narine bowled a good length delivery to Sachin Tendulkar, who went for the cut. The ball spun in a mile and cannoned into off stump off bat and pad. Had both not come in the way, it would have taken out leg stump. With one of the game's greats not being able to pick Narine, the rest of the Mumbai Indians line-up had little chance. He finished with 4 for 15; had Lasith Malinga not got six off a dropped catch on the straight boundary, Narine could have had 5 for 9.

The 32-run margin was substantial in the end, and it was down to how swiftly Knight Riders barged in to the opening created by Tendulkar's dismissal. The pressure was already on Mumbai Indians after Herschelle Gibbs had crawled to 13 off 24 deliveries, four of those runs being overthrows. When Tendulkar fell, the asking-rate had touched nine. Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard had hunted down a much stiffer target against Royal Challengers Bangalore a couple of day ago. It wasn't to be today. Not on this pitch.

The Wankhede crowd waited for their all-star line-up to fire. They waited for the big hits to come. In vain. With 58 needed off 28, Shakib Al Hasan lured Rayudu out with a wider one to give Brendon McCullum an easy stumping. Jacques Kallis, who had got a ripper from RP Singh first ball, had Pollard edging a slow bouncer to McCullum. Next ball, he trapped Dwayne Smith in front with a skiddy delivery which nipped in. Rohit Sharma was Mumbai Indians' only hope now; Narine had him caught by a diving McCullum off a leading edge. The rest caved in.

Smith's fall had made it 96 for 6, exactly the same perilous position Knight Riders had found themselves in after being stunned early by an atrocious umpiring decision and a terrific ball from RP Singh. Their lower order and Yusuf Pathan rode on some fortune, though, to take 44 off the final 26 balls.

Stroke-making was hard as the usual Wankhede bounce combined with the ball not coming on. The pitch did not have any role to play in the first dismissal, though; umpire Subroto Das had. He adjudged McCullum lbw though the batsman was at least two metres out of his crease to a ball that pitched outside leg and would have missed off. Knight Riders were to get another rough one later, when Tendulkar was caught plumb in front first ball by Shakib, only to be denied by umpire Billy Doctrove.

RP Singh followed up the McCullum wicket by uprooting Kallis' off stump with a ripper, getting a short of a length ball to swing in and zip through the gate. A stunned Knight Riders tamely allowed the home bowlers to build up the pressure.

Even Gautam Gambhir, who has had a golden run this season, found it difficult to score, and could not capitalise on two let-offs. He was dropped by the wicketkeeper and by Tendulkar at third man, but was bowled on 27 as he missed a Pollard cutter.

Knight Riders continued to struggle to time their shots, with Tiwary pottering to 17 off 27 deliveries at one stage. An inside edge off Pollard brought him four, and he hammered the next ball past mid-off for another. Harbhajan Singh and Malinga were hit down the ground for sixes.

From 6 for 2 to 89 for 3 seemed a creditable recovery, given the pitch, but three wickets for seven runs nearly undid Tiwary's efforts. Yusuf, caught off a RP Singh no-ball, could not do much to break his poor run, but along with the lower order, managed to get Knight Riders to 140.

It hadn't looked to be a challenging total at the break, it turned out to be a match-winning one, and all but took Knight Riders to the playoffs.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s PP 16-20 overs NB/Wides
Kolkata Knight Riders 49 12 3 32/2 46/2 1/7
Mumbai Indians 61 9 3 26/1 28/7 (19.1) 0/2

@AusieBangaleeShameem- ya.. i read that comment of Ganguly on Aajkal.. But i think mendis not bowled well in twenty 20 format...

Posted by AusieBangaleeShameem on (May 19, 2012, 5:03 GMT)

@paps1889 --- thanks for the comment. An interview with the Indian daily Aajkal today, Ganguly asserts that Narine's mystery will soon end ---- as it happened to Ajanta Mendis. He also adds that Narine's bowling not suitable for ODIs and Test matches.

Posted by paps1889 on (May 18, 2012, 14:08 GMT)

@AusieBangaleeShameem, I agree with you..Narine not plays enough matches to be compared with Saeed Ajmal..

Posted by paps1889 on (May 18, 2012, 10:36 GMT)

Sunil Narine should have been picked by West Indies for their series against England. I think they will suffer without him..No matter what will be the pitch, he will bowl well in every pitches..

Somebody comparing Narine with Sayeed Ajmal here! Comparing a club cricketer with an International one!! Just can't get it -- please provide some more explanation!!!

those who are writing that shakib sohuld ge tthe mom award isn't true coz narine samcked 2 boundaris and bowlling figures of 4-15!! i dont know wot re u saying.. and best of luck KKR!!!!!

I wonder what ppl have problem with Gambhir.... 1st they were crying that he was not after Sakib won MOM and they r saying he didn't praise Narine.... What should he do.... Lick his team mates feet.....

GG has been phenomenal this year and Sakib is ordinary

Well done kkr keep it up I think the three spinners three seam is a winning combination good luck in the play off.

Posted by Tawhid_002 on (May 17, 2012, 15:49 GMT)

Great performance of KKR, especially by the bowlers. Outstanding bowling performance by Narine. He deserved the MoM. Definitely, Narine is a great finding of this IPL. Contribution from every bowler gave the KKR Win. Thats the team work. Every bowler or Batsman may not be able to shine every match. Some one perform better in his day or failed others day, its natural. But team work is very important as KKR showed. About Shakib, i want to say that his performance was not bad. Gambhir brought him to bowl at the very beginning which is not easy because batsmans are then fearless to play shot. Gambhir got the reliability on Shakib to use him with the opening bowler. Lastly congrates to Narine for his performace.

Posted by Hayat22 on (May 17, 2012, 15:35 GMT)

Guys, I was the first person after the Chennai match to have suggested this bowling attack. All spin - Narine, Abdulla and Shakib with Bhatia and Balaji, though i did call for kallis' head also primarily for his lack of batting contribution, but his bowming was invaluable yesterday. By an large, the strategy to keep the pace down has borne fruit. This should be persisted, and Lee and Lange should only be played if the match is in Mohali or Dharamshala or Delhi else its ok. Though lange's express can be used even in the pune match. He was successful before and Ganguly and co would still have a problem with ihm considering thier woeful form. But consolidating the spin stranglehold and fine tuning it should be the objective of the next match for KKR, as also improving the middle order's strike rate and run contribution. If this tema stays then bring either Das or shakib 1 down if the score is 50+ else Kallis comes in, follwed by tiwary and then yusuf.

Just curious! BD fans why u guys are so obsessed with Shakib and never vocal about Tamim Iqbal? Given the PWI performance is so lackluster this IPL season, that poor lad definitely deserved a chance or tow. As for Shakib, he is a genuine all-rounder in subcontinent condition, but unfortunately he does not deserve a chance in playing XI unless it is a turner pitch and KKR can afford to field three genuine spinners.

@Arif Joarder: The answer is they are not paid well enough by their board. Its analogous to why ppl settle in the first world (US, UK, etc) staying away from home.

Narine seem to be receiving no complements from his captain, during and after play....does Gambir have a problem with the man

Please leave Narine out of these STUPID debates and comparison with Shakib. On the world stage, they are both emerging talent and yet to be sustainable. Narine is in India to do a job for his employers and that is what matters most. Narine continues to make us Trinidadians and West Indians proud. Who he's better than is a NON-ISSUE TO US.

Posted by skepticaloptimist on (May 17, 2012, 10:50 GMT)

First off, very many congrats to KKR for their amazing bowling. Although I was supporting the opposition yesterday, KKR deserved this win. Narine is the real deal - even if he doesn't do his knuckle ball hoojoo, he is very effective with his stock offie, given his superb line and length. @Gravitas - I'm not a fan boy of Sachin's and don't mind if someone criticizes him. All that said, dude, your monotonous barking is spamming cricinfo pages. At least inject some meaning into your dumb comment, for Christ's sake. Plus, all your comments just show one thing: Sachin lives in your head rent free. @Shakib fans - He's very, very good, but I don't think he contributes to the team's balance unless KKR are willing to sacrifice Kallis or Baz.

Posted by Fir3Blade on (May 17, 2012, 10:42 GMT)

Being an MI fan have to keep my mouth shut.. yes KKR played exceptionally well n won the match especially Sunil Narine.. But would like to remind one thing, the wankhede pitch was turning, slow n low in the second innings which of course helped spinners.. It was a bad decision from MI mgmt. to bowl first(n for God's sake remove Bhajji, no contribution in batting bowling n fielding as well).. I would just like to wait n watch what happens in the playoffs.. We all saw what happens to KKR when Gambhir gets out early.. team is entirely dependent on Gauti for batting n Narine for bowling.. so thinking "KKR" in final :D .. hahahahaha.. all the best!!.. n Tendulkars wkt.. it was n exceptional ball which turned drastically.. he will also have his day n MI will bounce back..just w8 n watch..

Shakib Al Hasan should have got MoM. After Gary Sobers, Sir Shakib Al Hasan is next bast thing happened to Cricket. :)

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 10:08 GMT)

Absolutely, even after getting chances so irregularly and with the pressure of getting dropped after a single bad performance Shakib's stats are not much different to that of Narine. Narine got 21 wickets in 12 IPL matches, whereas Shak got 20 wickets in the 12 IPL matches he played in two seasons being in and out of the side. And that too because Narine's mystery is yet to be discovered, I'm sure once people figure him out he won't be able to perform with such consistency. Really it's incredible how so much praise and attention Narine is getting but when it comes to Shak he is just another player from Bangladesh.

I know ryt....bein a bangladeshi citizen...i think evry1z too hypd wid shakib....I wud neva blame gambhir or ny1 else....gambhir has been an excellent captain since d begginin....nd d way he mixed up d bowling...DD will surely retain was truly an all-round performance....Narines 4 wickets nd awsum economy rate....shakib's low economy.....kallis breakthrough....A KKR match indeed....But BALAJI deserves the spotlight....He was the one building pressure from the beggining supported by shakib...If bangladeshis are complaining bou shakib....then I would go against them because Morgan deserves the place in the bEst 11 most because he is a 1st class T20 cricketer while shakib isn't much experienced in this format of the game

Posted by SportsObserver on (May 17, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

I completely agree with 'tisra'. Stop this over-rating and under-rating! You guys are embarrassing yourselves and also Shakib to a certain extent and he did nothing to deserve it. Shakib is now a good consistent international player, may be people will call him a 'Great' player when he retires if you just let him be. He is still not 'Great', but UNDOUBTEDLY he is being under-valued by KKR especially on those spinning tracks. But stop being so emotional!! STOP worshiping players or film stars - be it Sachin, Ganguly, Lara, Sakib, SRK, Bacchan or whatever. And to You the haters, You do not have to hate them THAT much either- just don't watch them perform. You guys have started to lose objectivity, this is what happens when you love or hate so blindly.

This was the best balanced squad of KKR... KKR Management please keep this squad till you become Champion in IPL 2012... Best wishes

It is never possible to beat Syed Azmal by Sunil Narine as a BD fan I think cz Narine is a good spinner but he hasn't enough flight which Azmal has and that's make the difference between them.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 8:04 GMT)

Shakib has been one of the top all rounders of the world along with kallis and Watson, In Indian condition he is definitely the best balling all rounder, while Watson is definitely the best batting all rounder. KKR has under used Shakib, he has done very well with the ball in all the matches and should have played all matches in turning tracks like Eden Garden. Also given the current form of Mcculum - not scoring many runs and also playing at low strike rate, he can easily be replaced by Bisla and Shakib can bat at 1 down.

Posted by borhans on (May 17, 2012, 8:03 GMT)

Sakib showed even in that pitch he is a good all rounder even with bat .When kallis, mcuallum, yousuf pathan struggled with scoring runs ,sakib was taking runs easily ,comfortably .its just sitting on the bench of 2 month must have make him to impatience at times .But he could give KKR the real strength in middle order batting as he has records having high strike rate without getting out .He bowled well Tendulakar wicket could really give him more confidence but again maybe he is in mental pressure as too much shuffling with him .For narnia i won't say not to keep him instead sakib .Its just sakib can be as better & much effective all rounder than jack kallis if given that much opportunity like kallis

Thank god finally a good thing happen to IPL that MI is gonna kick out of the tournament. they absolutly deserved too. What a ridiculous umpiring by the two. I thought one team has 10 players and other one has 14 (11 MI + yusuf + two good umpires) Over rated team with no spirit to the game. I`m a proud CSK fan.

Although I personally felt Shakib should have got more matches than he got, I can't take 'Shakib is a Superman' type boasting/teasing from fans/haters anymore. Frankly, he has nothing to do with these, but still will get over-hyped and underrated at the same time. I would love to see RTD get another match, but I think in the last match KKR chose their best 4 foreigners this season.

First and foremost, HATS OFF to Gambhir's brilliant captaincy last nite! And big ups to his bowlers for repaying their skippers backing and great captaincy with a brilliant perfomance. I also particularly loved Balaji's post match interview, "Good teams always believe and we are a good team. So we believed we can win it." And with last nites perfomance they were better that good, they were brilliant! Fantastic opening spell by Balaji and Shakib! Great support from Abdul. Narine was his normal superb-self! And 2 crucial breakthroughs by Kallis and that's why is one of the greatest all-rounders to ever play they game, because you know even if he can fail with bat, he always has something special up his sleeve with ball in hand! Majestic KKR last nite!

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 7:03 GMT)

The postings are too much obsessed with Shakib. Well, he bowled as well as Abdulla Narine totally deserved the spot light. But it is travesty of justice to forget the spell of Balaji. In remarkable seam bowling with variations he had initial figures of 8 runs in 3 overs that too at the start. He totally tied MI. Gambir has lot of trust in him With his judicious handling of bowlers KKR has a chance to reach finals My dear Bangladesh friends, Shakib is a spirited all rounder. But he can never hold a candle to Kallis who has more than 10000 runs & 200 wickets in test. Never ask for replacement of Kallis by Shakib

KKR performance is very nice yesterday especially from Bowlers,Narine bowling is cannot picked by Sachin too his bowling is too good in this IPL,Yusuf is lacking for the form i think Das is playing well in this IPL i think Das can sedn ahead of Yusuf even if he scoes 25 of 8 balls is nice What do you think

Are you crazy? Shakib as an opener? This is the whole world hates us commenting about Shakib. Be logical Aryan. And no one here is going to agree. Shakib has been great yesterday, disgust to Balaji, who for no reason over threw at the bowlers end, when Gibbs was already in. And Sachin was gone earlier, credit taken by Narine but everyone forgot that it was Shakib again who deserved Sachin's wicket, it was a clear Lbw. Bad umpiring. disappointment.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 6:38 GMT)

Its a great Team performance by KKR.Shakib showed his quality bowling in the power-play.He forced them to panic. Remember there is some fielding mistake(over-trough) when shakib was bowling. He shoul get more wicket including Tendulkar.Great performance by SN...he is getting better day by day.I just want to tell those people who criticize playing Shakib in the 11 even yesterday they told if shakib play than KKR will must lose the match. You guys cant predict the future. Its shows that you goys dont have any knowledge about cricket even do not have any common sense.Bowling in 1st 6 over for a spinner is never easy.

Posted by Lord.emsworth on (May 17, 2012, 6:36 GMT)

Mumbai arent doing that well since they fell back on their strategy of letting Malinga open the bowling attack. He always took an early wicket or two and then came back to get one or two at the death.

Posted by bouncer22 on (May 17, 2012, 6:35 GMT)

Without taking any credit away from KKR - it was a huge strategic mistake on part of MI that made them lose the match. Sending Kartik at no.3 when you have Rohit and Rayudu in the dugout is, IMO, just suicidal. Both Rohit and Rayudu have repeatedly proved that they are big time players if they are given some initial space to work in, which was not the case with Kartik - never known to be a big game player nor a pinch hitter (a SR of 80+ y'day supports that fact..!). Gibbs really crawled.. but MI still had chance to make amends for it - he fell in 6th over... but by sending Kartik, they messed up the chance. I feel sad to see this - am an MI fan..!!

Posted by bhaloniaz on (May 17, 2012, 6:30 GMT)

KKRs plan should be simple. They have the best bowler in Narine. Sakib himself is a great at bowling at the start or at the end. The combination of Kallis and Sakib gives KKR two good bowlers among the batsmen. If Balaji and Iqbal is bowling so well, it would not be easy to score against them. Sure they donot have a third pacer. Narine compensates for that. At least 10 indian quicks are doing really well in this IPL. India would have hard time picking between PK, Awana, Zaheer, Balaji, Umesh, Aaron, Irfaan, Munaf, Nehera, RP etc.

Posted by tahseenfung on (May 17, 2012, 6:25 GMT)

Great team effort by KKR. Gouti juggled the bowlers superbly. Best team combination for KKR to me. Narine undoubtedly the best find of this year IPL edition. Very bad umpiring. Tendulkar was gone first ball. Mccullum faced horrible decision. to Ajay Jadeja: you are one of the best players of your time & highly respectable. Please don't comment anything silly to other players. You have no right to underestimate someone [on innings break at extra innings T 20 ].

Posted by andrew27994 on (May 17, 2012, 6:23 GMT)

I still back Bhajji's decision to chase on this wicket. It played the same throughout the match. I felt that Manoj Tiwary's innings was so crucial to the win. That was one of his better innings and turned the match around. 140 was always a good total on this pitch. Gibbs and Sachin were the main culprits for MI. It was important that they got a quick start with the hard new ball. Once the ball is softer, it stops on the wicket and makes shot selection more difficult. But hats off to Narine. He showed why he is being regarded as one of the best spinners in the world at present.

Amazing win by KKR ... nice one @ Bodyline_1933 ... I feel there is still one change that can be made in the KKR lside and that is to get Marchant replacing Kallis ... if only for one match against Pune ... Kallis is being used more of a bowler and its always good to have tear away fast bowler .... and we could also do with Tiwary opening the batting instead of McC .... I would've never said this but the form that Gambhir is in ... he takes the pressure of his partner ... and Tiwary can build the innings at the other end ... the line up should be as follows - 1. Gambhir 2. Tiwary 3. McCullum 4. Pathan 5. Shakib 6. Bhatia 7. Das 8. Narine 9. Balaji 10. Abdulla 11. de Lange This side has a good batting and a potent bowling line-up ....

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 6:10 GMT)

Shakib should have been given in opening. Gambhir sucks. If shakib was the opener, he could have hit 100 runs in an over!! do u agree guyzz???

Posted by coolbang on (May 17, 2012, 6:08 GMT)

kudos naraine, u re justifiying the amount paid for by KKR, the value and utitlity was was very much known went WI drew the T20 and ODI series against aussies recently, Michael clarke said thank god he is off for the IPL not available for the test series!!!!!, which enabled them to win 2-0( with lot of effort), Wi with bravo, pollard, gayle, smith, samuels & naraine can be world beaters, teffific talents,They could hve done whitewash( english) instead of of the reversal now!!!!

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 6:02 GMT)

A big mistake MI made. Why they changed the batting order ? Why they sent Karthik ahead of Rohit ? Rohit is settled at no 3. Throughout the tournament he scored more than 400 runs playing at no 3. What was the logic sending Karthik ahead of him? Gibs made nly 13 in 26 balls. If MI wants to increase run rate they should have tried someone like Pollord or Smith. But why Karthik? He is not stall known for his punch hitting. And Rohit himself is quiet capable of turning tables on his own as just in last match against KKR he smashed 109 in 59 balls. And Gauti ! Well played ! He planned his attack verywell. His plan initially only was to make Sachin and Gibs to play like test inning and to raise required runrate for MI. So he was succeed at great extent. Then MI think tank sent Karthik ahead of Rohit. I think from there only MI started loosing grip over the match. And MI ended in poor defeat.

Posted by pjbarua on (May 17, 2012, 5:49 GMT)

Gambhir did very well to manage three spinners & the spin trio worked superbly. Even Bhatia was not required to call for a single over! Narine is just outstanding and Kallis & Shakib brings so much balance in the attack. KKR should play these three players in all the remaining matches! Balaji has bowled some super spells in this IPL. KKR's bowling at its best.

Posted by siri1234 on (May 17, 2012, 5:04 GMT)

@analyst c yes actually everyone knows how big deal it is for shakib to reach 2 digit figure and score 13 runs .shakib played so well above his standard.a person who usually struggle to get past 5 runs has scored 13 he should hav been man of the match.and by the way talking about that appeal from shakib, shakib can only appeal as he hardly gets any the way shakib is the bowler with most appeals and the least wickets in international cricket lol.

There is no doubt that Narine is having a dream run but he also have the benefit of having the finest batsmen(Gambhir) of spin in his team. There is no one in world cricket who use there feet better than Gambhir and the upcoming T-20 world cup would also be a battle between Ajmal,Naraine n Ashwin( I know many might not agree with me comparing Ashwin with the other two but you can never count out a guy who is willing to flight the ball in his 4 over spell).

I am a bangladeshi and some people who are claiming Shakib should have been the MoM, come on people, Narine was better player last night and deserved to be the the rest of the people, I guess, we the subcontinental people get very emotional on such things...we, the Bangladeshis, become as emotional on Shakib as the indians on tendulkar.

Sunil Naraine is a great find. I just wish he starts playing for the WI national team. Along with Gayle,Pollard,Bravo,Russel, if Sunil plays for the WI national team, then I a am pretty sure WI is once again going to be the world beaters they once were. As an Indian, I would love to see the WI regaining its former glory.

After the worst possible LBW decision of McCullam, the umpires must have thought they should not give anymore LBWs in the match, even if someone gets plumb in front......and tendulkar got saved from a golden duck out of it...

Shakib should bowl first four overs continuously and he'll get any team out within 35 runs. Then he should open with the bat as he will naturally hit six sixes to get to victory. Clearly KKR is missing the opportunity they have by not playing Shakib much. There is only one person who Shakib needs to worry about, and that is Rajni Sir!

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 3:38 GMT)

In the entire report, no mention has been made about Balaji who bowled his heart out. The pressure on the MI started right from his first over and continued to play havoc. Wake up, Reporter

@Sehwag_Is_Ordinary : Shakib was very good actually and recommends a place in the starting 11.. But what is with this "Sachin can't read Shakib"? Yes Sachin is aged and is struggling to keep up the same tempo everyday.. But Shakib is just a normal left spinner like any other guy with a very good control.. He is not a Brad Hogg or a Narine or Ajmal or not even a Mendis/Ashwin when it comes to variations.. The struggle of Sachin is more of age factor..

If CSK lose totoday & ; If RCB win the rest two games DD,KKR,MI & RCB in playoffs . If RCB win one match DD,KKR,MI & CSK will be in playoffs. If RR & KXIP both win their rest two games DD,KKR,MI & RR will be in playoffs If KXIP/RR win one of their two games RCB/CSK will be in playoffs with DD,KKR & MI

So, Shakib fans will now come out and boast.. And, there is nothing wrong in it actually.. And, dont be much surprised/offended if you see Shakib dropped next game to include a pace bowler in Lee or DeLange.. After all, they need to pick only four of the overseas players who will benefit the team maximum.. The whole world knows who should be the one overseas spinner if given a choice for KKR..

Why is it that KKR discussion cannot be without a mention of Shakib? I don't think its all the Bangladeshi folks who are crying foul whenver he is left out and relish whenver he is in the team. Nevertheless, I think KKR should finally be set with who are their better foreign players in Indian condition.. what a turnaround from couple years of abysmal display of cricket. Watmore started something really special and I am glad that its being continued barring some brain farts in selection...

Gibbs or franklin who downs Mumbai most???? I think its Gibbs. If the opening batsman wastes this number of balls and gets out, then how do the middle order manage to win. Hit out or get out please play Levi or better don't go to playoffs.

"Shakib Al Hasan to Tendulkar, no run, a massive, massive appeal for lbw but umpire Doctrove shakes his head. Tendulkar was pushing forward and was hit on the pad by one that was angling into him and going on with the arm. That's hit him in line of middle stump and that is absolutely plumb. That is as out as McCullum was not out." He was on 0 and went on to 27. It's another matter his side lost, still. Anyhow, DRS looks a must; otherwise, spectators would start feeling bad, very very bad.

Finally Sakib was given a chance and all 3 games he proved beyond doubt that deserved to get more chances. He had Tendulkar today in his first over according to a foreign TV commentator but was not given. Many were certainly disappointed to see him not in action in many games. I understand that he can not play in all the games but he was not given his fair share of chances for sure. Wasim akram was all praise for Sunil and Sakib today. It was a true team work today with contribution from all.

@ Richard Bachan, This side might make you proud but not even one of them the of the class of Windies of 70's, 80's and 90's. Some of them are good cricketers but most of them are mediocre.

Posted by likeintcricket on (May 17, 2012, 1:02 GMT)

Shakib is a good allrounder but he is up against four very fine cricketers who can win the matches themselves. Macallum, he is very good batter and an excellent keeper. Kallis, no one can take his place not even Tendulkar. Narine, well he is surely one of the greatest bowling talent around now and Bret lee, we know enough about him.

Posted by Patchmaster on (May 17, 2012, 0:59 GMT)

If Narine made Test cricket his priority, WI would be MUCH better off. Instead, he will ruin his game and after a few years in IPL, we'll never see him again...........what a huge shame.

Posted by tonyton on (May 17, 2012, 0:45 GMT)

to Richard Bachan, I can understand your optimism. That Trinidad line up, does look very dangerous. Kudos to such a tiny Island for putting together the likes of Pollard, The Bravo brothers, Narine, Rampaul, Bharath, Cooper, Ramdhin, Simmons and Badree. Saw Badree last year, he gave everyone fits, might even be a better bowler than Narine, have not heard about Gabriel. Looks like you guys will definitely represent the Caribbean well. To all the haters, guys Narine and Shakib are quite young players, support them and hope they improve, stop the bashing, the cricket world can only gain from those guys getting better. Narine does look comical with a bat in his hand ha ha

Posted by rahman1001 on (May 17, 2012, 0:41 GMT)

As I mentioned Kallis and Shakib, both terrific all rounders, along with SP Narine should never be dropped. The fourth foreign player can be chosen depending on the needs- a batsman or a bowler. That is the key for solving the complexity of team selection in KKR. Those who are staunch critic of Shakib in India, should know that Shakib can get chance in the team as a bowler, that he is contributing 10 odd runs in quickfire fashion is a bonus.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 0:36 GMT)

Awesome winning. I wanna salute Sunil Narine. He is a fantastic bowler. I have already become fan of him. Some people of Bangladesh are crying out Shakib and Shakib. I am also a Bangladeshi. Shakib is a brilliant player that people of all over the world know it very well. Shakib doesn't need to prove himself as a best player as he is also doing well. And I would like to request all Indians, plz don't criticize about our Shakib. You should bear in mind, if KKR wanna be champion in IPL 5 then Gambhir should use Shakib and Narine. Shakib and Narine are the perfect dual for KKR. Best of luck KKR...... From a Bangladeshi fan.

Mumbai is not a strong contender for this IPL 2012. It is very weak in Batting. Sachin, is not even good than Dravid who denied an ODI place to play for India showing a reason that he is slow; but fact remains is Dravid is aggressive player , played according to what team demands always. Seeing Sachin i feel pity, and wanted to ask " Why you force yourself to play IPL, it's not your game ". Dravid is for IPL, yes he is !! Dravid is top ten in leading run getters in this IPL 2012. Dravid is always been a big asset for team India or for kent or RR. It's just that time for him to settle in his role was not given. Media always quoted him as test player just defending balls and not scoring. Shame shame on who said like that only for TRP's or some other thing. Dravid a real hero and a true Indian.

But thats the emotion of subcontinental people and thats where the business starts. Shakib's inclusion to KKR brings it millions of Bangladeshi fans and thats also the reason I follow and feel for KKR. Shakib is a very good player but just a starter to international cricket and long way to go ... anyway, I love cricket and love to witness them continuous, cricket is the best entertainment I got during my work also :) ... so please , keep peace nd love cricket.

I am Positive that Rahul Dravid deals the final blow to Mumbai Indians and they go home!Well bowled Sunil Narine. With this I hope Sachin realizes that he is no longer what he used to be. Feeling for the ball against a rookie spinner is not the way a middle order batsman is supposed to play. I really Hope he somehow sits out of the England tour in November so that another promising talent such as Rahane can take his place!

Why all this bashing about Narine? He is only in his first year of international and is doing us in Trinidad proud. And as a WARNING to everyone, watch out for us Trini's in the Champion League. Remember, we cannot import anyone, everyone who plays for Trinidad MUST be a Trindad citizen. If we have our full team, it will read: Adrian Bharath, Lendl Simmons, Dwane Bravo, Darren Bravo, Keiron Pollard, Dinesh Ramdin capt, Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Kevon Cooper, Samuel Badree and Shannon Gabrial(newest West Indian fast bowler).

Posted by   on (May 16, 2012, 22:11 GMT)

@Yallanki, that was INCREDIBLY funny. Well done. But on a slightly less sarcastic note. It's incredibly unfair what these guys are going to Shakib. He's a pretty decent player who'd probably walk into most sides of the world. But he's nowhere close to being in the list of the all time greats yet and I'd pick Kallis over him any day of the week and twice on match days. Let him truly give you something to be proud of. Let him lead you to a world cup with like Kapil Dev did. Let him make 257 and run through oppositions like Wasim Akram did. Let opposition teams fear him like they did Sobers. Then maybe you can be rightfully grudged at KKR not playing him. Till then Narine> Kallis> Mccalum> Lee/Shakib (depending on the pitch)> Delange > Ryan. That's just the way it is, QUIT WHINING.

Absolutely @Analyst_c, Shakib should have been the MOM, and Man of the Tournament as well, because with out Shakib taking the all important Rayudu's wicket KKR would have lost the match and with that a chance to enter playoffs. Now KKR is almost in the playoffs thanks to Shakib. Now they should drop Gambhir as he can't bowl and give captaincy to Shakib, in fact Shakib can keep the wickets of his own bowling so there is no point in having McCullum in the side. Shakib can appeal for LBW and can rattle the confidence of dug out and entire country.

It is a bit sad to see Tendulkar struggling to keep up with the youngsters and hit big shots, and dropping catches. He has nothing to prove in cricket and T20 is for youngsters, allrounders, big hitters and great fielders. Maybe stick to tests after this IPL. Analyst_c, loved the analysis. Especially, as others have mentioned, the inspirational appeal. Appeal of the series right there.

Posted by StevieS on (May 16, 2012, 21:33 GMT)

Ahmed Hussain "Shakib played good today though I was pretty disappointed the way he got out but at least he scored more runs than both Kallis and McCullum combined", Yeah he got about his average score of 13, McCullum also got a very dodgy decision. Shakib did bowl well and should of had 2, but he is competing with the overseas quick bowlers for his place, not with McCullum or Kallis.

Posted by   on (May 16, 2012, 21:33 GMT)

Bhajji won the toss and decided to bowl first he should know that playing narine while chasing is too difficult than batting first....thats why gambhir was to be bat first ....MI never chased down tactfully may be der luck was strong for some matches but it shown that they need pace der inning in first 6 overs....while narine is going to bowl death overs.....on other day chennai shown some good tactics and they were going at first 10 per over while chasing....MI should have learned from chennai....KKR can beat any team even DD ...they just need middle order to fire

Sachin should stop playing cricket altogether. He should learn how to read spinners first. He was behaving like a fish out of water while facing Narine. Can't even put away a rookie kid like Narine ;-). Well bowled Narine! Take a bow! You are just showing over-hyped liabilities their rightful place. Well done KKR. Congrats Dear Gautam! Clinical and merciless mauling of MI. Loved it.

The great sachin had no idea where narine's spinner was going. Totally bamboozled!

Posted by Analyst_c on (May 16, 2012, 20:45 GMT)

Shakib should have been the man of the match today. His wonderful 13 runs with a sublime boundary and his inspirational appeal against Tendulkar were the deciding factors in this game. Narine was quite lucky to bowl to Tendulkar after he had been so rattled and confused by that Shakib delivery on which he survived the lbw decision. In fact, one can credibly argue that Narine got all his wickets because Shakib had already softened up the batting and had shattered the confidence of the Mumbai batsmen by his magical 25-1 figures.

Posted by   on (May 16, 2012, 20:39 GMT)

Well done Narine! Wish Shakib did better with the bat. He needs to do above average in every match to continue to play in the team. He certainly deserved Tendulkar's wicket.

KKR seems to have the combination right. Kallis is a good crafty pace bowler and comes back strong after being hit. In contrast, once Lee gets hit, he tries to bowl even faster. KKR seems to have the best variety in bowling attack with the world current best offspinner, all-time best all-rounder, the current best spinning all-rounder, with Balaji also bowling well and Bhatia also if required. Maybe, Das could be tried up the batting order.

Posted by   on (May 16, 2012, 20:11 GMT)

Very Good performance by KKR because the wicket was clearly not suited to spin but excellent team effort won them the game comfortably in the end. Narine is clearly a threat to Ajmal in the spin department but I must say, he's more than 10 years younger than him. Shakib played good today though I was pretty disappointed the way he got out but at least he scored more runs than both Kallis and McCullum combined. Shakib's bowling was spot on but really should've gotten the wicket of his first delivery against SRT 'again' haha...I mean if you are a threat to SRT consistently, than clearly you are good which Shakib was plus another excellent economy rate considering the fact half his overs were in powerplays and should've gone for less runs because of silly unnecessary misfield's. To be honest KKR should win this tournament but the only thing that will prevent them from winning the IPL is bad team selection and must correct this fast. Fast bowlers on fast wickets and slow on slow.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (May 16, 2012, 20:10 GMT)

Finally MI's run of freakish luck came to an end, although thought it was continuing with the LB decision of McCullum, one of the worst I've seen. Still hope to see RCB take MIs place in the top 4, would rather watch Gayle, Kohli, AB than Munaf and Bhajji. DD, KKR, CSK and RCB for the semis please.

Maybe the selection commitee will now see the need to include the players needed to be effective on certain pitches. Had either Abdullah or Shakib been in the side couple days ago, KKR would be leading the 2012 IPL today, well done guys

Kolkata won on a fast bowler's pitch !!!! What is the secret? Answer is they played all the 4 most economical bowlers(Narine, Shakib, Balaji & Abdullah) at a time, no matter if they are spinners or pacers, no matter if the pitch was for spinners or pacers. In t20 its all about the economy rate.

This is the team that will take KKR to win the trophy. No doubt. Also the umpiring standards are very low. How on earth Tendulkar was not given a plumb LBW? Anyways, each players now on KKR know their role which was missing earlier. Well bowled three spinners. Ambati Ryudu's wicket by Shakib was very crucial at that stage because Ambati Ryudu is the man who was getting MI home. Well bowled Narine, Shakib, Abdullah, Balaji, Kallis. You know Mumbai lost the match on 2nd over when the entire dug out of MI got rattled by the LBW shout of Shakib
