Kings XI Punjab kept themselves in contention for a place in the playoffs with a comfortable victory set up by their seamers in Dharamsala. In conditions conducive to swing and movement, Praveen Kumar and Parvinder Awana stymied Chennai Super Kings, who finished their league campaign on a disappointing note. Super Kings are still hanging by a thread in this IPL though, and are at the mercy of other results.

Kings XI's decision to go in with a four-pronged pace attack paid off and despite a Super Kings fightback led by Dwayne Bravo, a target of 121 proved easy to scale down. Adam Gilchrist, returning to lead his side after a lay-off of nearly a month due to a hamstring injury, smashed an unbeaten half-century to see his team home in front of a full house at the picturesque HPCA Stadium.

Gilchrist, after winning the toss, had no doubts about putting Super Kings in and Praveen went about justifying that decision. Several IPL venues around the country have supported movement off the pitch but here there was genuine swing on offer. The Super Kings openers were confident when the ball was pitched up but indecisive when the length was just held back a touch. Praveen sensed that early and beat M Vijay, before having him caught behind when he tried to play an expansive shot.

Michael Hussey faced a tough time against Ryan Harris, pushing and prodding at away-going deliveries before nicking one to the keeper off Praveen. Suresh Raina was dropped on 2 at slip by Piyush Chawla and he went on to strike two sixes off Azhar Mahmood - one launched over long-off, the other top-edged over fine leg. But Raina chased a wide one that same over, and was snapped up by Gilchrist. Super Kings were in trouble when a nippy Parvinder Awana, who also got excellent carry, dismissed MS Dhoni to make it 46 for 4, but Bravo fought back.

Bravo waited for an opening, provided by the spin of Piyush Chawla, dispatching a long hop over midwicket and creaming him through point. He then went after David Hussey, smashing his offspinners for consecutive sixes towards cow corner. Though Awana continued to be miserly, going for just 12 in his four-over spell and picking up two wickets, Mahmood faced an assault at the death. Albie Morkel hammered him for a six and a four, and Bravo was able to put together stands of 32 and 34 with Ravindra Jadeja and Morkel. His 48 gave Super Kings something to defend but Kings XI were the happier bunch at the halfway mark.

Gilchrist ensured the advantage remained with Kings XI. Though Ben Hilfenhaus and Morkel found some assistance under overcast skies, it wasn't as much as the first innings. Kings XI approached the chase positively and an early burst prevented Super Kings from applying any serious pressure. Mandeep Singh, albeit a little fortuitously, slashed Hilfenhaus for a couple of boundaries in the first over and Gilchrist drove Morkel powerfully twice in the second. When R Ashwin was brought on in the sixth, he was pulled and swept by Gilchrist for two fours.

Mandeep fell after a half-century stand, and Nitin Saini and David Hussey lost their wickets playing avoidable shots but Kings XI were always on track while Gilchrist stayed. He was determined to see his team through, was cautious when the need arose and ruthless when an opportunity came. He slashed Bravo over point, and then tore into Yo Mahesh, whose generous dose of short balls and length deliveries were promptly dispatched. He was thrashed for two sixes over square leg and two more fours in an over that fetched 22, and the result from there on was a foregone conclusion.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s Powerplay 16-20 overs NB/Wides
Chennai Super Kings 66 9 6 25-2 43-3 0/1
Kings XI Punjab 47 18 2 43-0 9-1 (1.3 overs) 0/2

CSK did it.....DHONi Rocks.........

Iam hardcore CSK fan ...Dear CSk fans Pleaser support Dhoni ....He need our support in tough times....

Posted by   on (May 19, 2012, 13:47 GMT)

Dhoni is the man to be blamed who gave all chance to Jadeja a useless guy bought for 2million. Dhoni is so criminal minded still to back up Jadja.. Just notice he has not given a single over to Jadeja on this match. He knows very well that Jadeja could concede too much and will spoil his name. To become a better team, Dhoni to play his natural attacking game and Jadeja should be removed not only from CSK and also from Indian Team. I hate Dhoni's captaincy and decision to keep a player like Jadeja in our Indian team and trying to avoid Pathan, Yuvi, Harbajan and so many. I hate him since he left yuvi from test matches prior to win WC 2011. I would say, the WC 2011 cam only bcoz of yuvi and luck of Dhoni. It is not by his captaincy.

@Karthi_2K11!!!buddy all the case is possible but deccan beating banglore!!!ohh that will be crazy to say

What was Abinav Mukund doing in the bench....He has not even played a single match in the IPL and yet Dhoni gave chances to that good for nothin Vijay. HOw pathetic is that? Abinav performed well even in England where all the masters including failed to contribute. Atlease Dhoni should have considered that. My support from here on is for Delhi and RCB.

For those who bash Dhoni and CSK and support your local teams you forgot to realise that CSK is the mirror image of the current Indian team as for as Dhoni's captancy is concerned. No matter what you think according to Dhoni the Jadejas, the Ashwins and the Rainas are match winners and they will be in Indian team too. And Dhoni himself is a big diadvantage for the team his charm and luck is long gone, his is only a shadow of the Dhoni what we saw a year back. He will continue to be adamant in his decision and he will not give chance to good players and for that India is suffering in international matches and continues to suffer also in IPL.

Posted by Karthi_2K11 on (May 18, 2012, 20:12 GMT)

Part 2 of 2: .…The path to the eliminator match has become murkier for CSK & they are almost knocked out of IPL-V, but they are not completely out yet. They depend on 4 results to make it to the 4th play-offs qualifier position in the IPL table: DD (away) beating KXIP, MI (away) beating RR, DC (home) beating RR, & DC (home) beating RCB. These results are not outlandishly impossible or far-fetched, as DD & MI are used to winning away, & even though DC has lost all its home matches this season, (& only won two away), the home factor is usually an advantage. If CSK make it to the eliminator, they would prefer to play against KKR (CSK beat them recently) instead of MI, to which they have lost both their home & away matches, as well as in last years's CL. And, if CSK make it to the Qualifier 2 round, they would prefer to play against either DD or KKR, (CSK has notched up away wins this season against both) rather than MI, which had earlier, beaten CSK both home and away easily.

Posted by Karthi_2K11 on (May 18, 2012, 20:12 GMT)

Part 1 of 2: @Vijay Venkatesh: if RCB beat DC, they are through to the eliminator ahead of CSK, because then RCB then has 19 points, 2 more than CSK. @Ankush Jangid: if MI lose against RR, then RR has a clearer chance of going to the play-offs ahead of CSK by one point, especially as they will be having the easier task of beating lowly-placed DC earlier. @Rajesh Kanna: You are right that KKR has qualified for the play-offs sooner than their last league away game against lowly-placed Warriors is due to be played, because KXIP did them a favour. But, whether it is enough for them to make it to the Qualifier 1 match between the top 2 teams, is yet to be seen, and depends on whether MI beat RR or not, and also whether, if, RCB can still displace them, if MI don't, from 2nd position, and then, would have to aim to have a higher NRR than KKR (highly unlikely even though the two teams may have the same number of wins in the league phase). Now, assuming there are no more rain-ruined matches….

CSK have only themselves to Blame. I wrote last time-unless CSK bat well their bowlers cannot do any thing. I feel Dhoni has given too many chances for a useless player like Jadeja.Underused Badrinath and other players. He is lacking inspiration as too much ios expected of MSD in every match Once he fails rest of them give in easily.Ashwin is off his rythm. No body performed with enthusuaiasm. So CSK should considerthemselves atleast to be in 17 points position but further progress is impossible. They need to drop Jadeja who is a liabilty for CSK and for India.

i've been a csk fan since 2009 and whether they're out or not out of IPL 5,they are a great team and will continue to be till the IPL saga ends (I hope it does soon !!) They haven't played like champs this year. Jadeja was a big mistake : Buying him was worse than Matthew Hayden buying the Mongoose bat. I think he is only fit to perform well for Rajasthan (like in 2008 and 2009). Despite the faith that CSK have shown in Srilankan players evry year, they failed to buy good players like Jayawardene this auction. Dhoni and Raina need a break 4m cricket for now.. let them bash others in t20 wc this year !

As for the bright side Chennai have always played fair in every match. Looking at teams like Mumbai,RCB,KKR,KXIP,DC & PWI most of their 'close' matches were rigged !! Delhi,Rajasthan,Kolkata deserve to be in the playoffs. I wish the fourth team to join them was CSK : but they failed. It's okay lions, even Man Utd did'nt win EPL this year. Form is temporary ,class permanent !!

I dunno y everone s blamin dhoni for the loss..first of all punjab made gud use of home advantage ny providin a seamer friendly attack...and like the indian cricket team, chennai lacks gud premium fast bowlers..except hilfy, noone can bowl at a particular length consistent...dhoni tried with everything he had,if someone asks dhoni to give chances to guys like bailey, randiv and styris, then whichforeign player ll sit out?...and india ll lose t20 wc for sure..we dont have a quality fast bowler...just by seein awana in tis match, dont het ur hopes high sayin he win matches nu...it was seamin conditions...yesterday we saw how umesh and aarom were murdered at the end of innings nu...we indians thinks as if we got the best t20team in the world..all our top batsmen will be found wantin in pace friendly wickets...remember wat happened at last t20 at WI..we were simply bounced out in pacer friendly pitches...

Genius Gilly done it for Punjab for the first time in this season... This win will be a huge moral booster for Punjab.

Posted by Jishnu.v.v on (May 18, 2012, 9:49 GMT)

I like Dhoni and its unfair to wholly blame him for what has happened. Well also CSK is not yet out of the competation.

I feel for badrinath and DuPlessis. They were the 2 who were also in form and Badrinath is a great team player who would bat at any position.

Also to remind people, in the 2010 game at the same venue beterer Punjab and CSK, badrinath played a very important role in the chase.

Leaving him out was a mistake i feel.. Also jadeja has not been worth the 2 million.

Can anyone explain why jadeja is being paid 2 million.

And i like gambhir's captainship for KKR. We need aggresive captaincy in all formats.

Dhoni doesnt seem to be playing his natural game which is to attack.

ALso i feel Dhoni needs some rest and probably to all his detractors he would come stronger and silence his critics in sometime either playing for India or any club...

@cskmache - what a load of tosh man. What happended in previous matches. You cant win matches with overrated players like Vijay, Badrinath, Ashwin anymore.

Posted by hari040761 on (May 18, 2012, 8:59 GMT)

dear caught-knott there are lot of road blocks available int he opposition which is invisible and we have to come over. but the mind block MSD had about team selection, available resource management and strategies are under his control and he should see only performance. you are having 11players and you have to win minimum 10 matches to qualify and if you give chance for one person in five matches to peform and come to form (vijay and jadu) you should be in the loosing side. maximum two matches otherwise should be given a break. it doesn't mean tinkering the line up. but time for the failed person to come back and other's performance can be watched. humble request to CSK-please give $2million to saha and ask him to go back and play in kkr.

Hello mates - Yesterday was "Guru Peyarchi" - Meaning change of planet (Guru) from one place to other place. Thats why Dhoni lost this game. Wait for more thrills, twist and turns in this IPL5. All the best CSK.

Posted by   on (May 18, 2012, 7:29 GMT)

dont wanna take any credit away from MSD for what he did for CSK in past 4 yrs; but honestly this yr CSK had looked like anything but defending champs twice. right fro the first game where they were totally dominated by MI they never looked on track except for one -two games like the one against RCB or the home game with DD last satuday. In previous editions though they looked slow starters they bounced back at correct time. this yr though; dhonis adamanet nature about picking the team combination had cost them kost of the games. jadeja hasnt done anything apart from one game , so has ashwin and raina but he will never make them sit out but when dougie bollinger failed to perform he was benched immediately. why du plesis the leading run scorer was kept on bench in a crucial game? why no chance to styris, randiv ,bailey? all these questions wud be asked if CSK doesnt make it to play offs ; for the first time in 5 IPL seasons

Posted by rsurya on (May 18, 2012, 7:28 GMT)

@Aganthakudu. What you said is absolute truth.

Posted by caught_knott_bowled_old on (May 18, 2012, 7:04 GMT)

The only guy who should be held responsible for being a roadblock to CSK's march into the playoffs is Dwayne Smith of MI!

Posted by TsoroM on (May 18, 2012, 6:54 GMT)

@Vishnu1503, same sentiments here. I was quite perplexed not seeing Faf, in the starting eleven. He suffered a bit of a set when he got ill, but he has been CSK's form-man and their highest run getter this season. CSK have squashed their chances here. I think the top for will be as follows, in no particular order. DD, KKR (obviously) then Mumbai and RCB...

Posted by satish619chandar on (May 18, 2012, 6:32 GMT)

@Aganthakudu : So, Except for finals in 2003, RP didn't have any big innings and Symonds, Hogg and Lee were the stars there.. In 2007, he didn't even have the finals moment.. So, RP is not a good captain?? People still give credit to Dada for 2003 WC where his only credible innings were against minnows.. As per your analysis, no captain deserves mention anywhere in the history.. Then Dhoni is no different.. He is now losing but it never makes him a complete dumb..

Posted by sss7 on (May 18, 2012, 6:30 GMT)

srinideva, last two IPL was one sided and no major competition prevailed. this year all teams have performed above expectation, hence once termed as good/best teams have suffered in this IPL. You cannot take history as your success and move ahead. The particular day counts. Earlier West Indies Ruled the World in ODI and now they cannot claim to be leaders stating earlier results, today they are underdogs. Dhoni success is always fluke.

Posted by srinideva on (May 18, 2012, 6:26 GMT)

@ gdalvi, before commenting to someone just realise the real fact, last four years there are no of players played for india in different format not only TN/CSK. TN is part of india right, may be you want full mumbai and delhi players only in the indian squad so that the team win it everything haa. then you peoples can raise a question Why don`t we change the team name from INDIA to mumdel. that kind of situation you wat right?... think beyond your circle peoples >>mpove forward> this is not 2000. everyone got a chance no one grab it ex: M tiwary,y pathan, harbhaj, am mishra, and finally Rohit Sha... What a joke he is....

most over rated hyped by commentry team (ravi, gavaskar, and finally manjrekar)

Posted by satish619chandar on (May 18, 2012, 6:23 GMT)

@Posted by on (May 18 2012, 03:47 AM GMT) : If one captain can take credit for best captain for giving chance to good potential players(Which would have happened even if other captain anyways), a captain who promoted himself in the WC finals and scored a 90 odd and won it with a six can claim the same too..

Posted by joseyesu on (May 18, 2012, 6:02 GMT)

Disappointed, there are some teams who has no big names but still they force themself and CSK, we have almost everybody as an international player, but still finding it extremely difficult to even qualify. Nobody is having the stubborness as like Rahane, Gambir, Gayle, Devillers, Malinga or Murali. Even FAT TRACK BULLIES cannot suit after seeing this IPL.

Posted by hari040761 on (May 18, 2012, 5:10 GMT)

this ipl dhoni's focus was on how to prove the selection of jadeja a correct one and also bring up raina, jadeja and ashwin to the next level and not on winning the trophy. as a die hard fan of CSK and dhoni every one let us down. you can loose match but not like how he got runout at chepauk against kxi. Raina should forget his ariel shots and should play only ground shots otherwise he will be thrown out of all the formats. Atleast during next auction the CSK selectors select proper genuine opening batsmen, bowler who can contribute to their selections like gayle, malinga, narine, morkel, tait, watson, develiers, awana, b kumar, dhawan, rahane, shakib(not used properly by KKR) etc. let them watch big bash, champions league and also t20 at england, SA. this is the time to revamp and even domestic tournaments should be watched especially t20.

Dhoni's captaincy has been woeful during this IPL and his batting has cost the team wins on atleast 3 occassions. He persists in promoting himself up the order and has been guilty of slowing down the run rate and being unable to cut loose, this in turn places significant pressure on his partner and they all get out trying to up the RR. Dhoni continues to persist with the combination that won the IPL for the last 2 yrs and he fails to see that not all players are in form. Jadeja has hardly bowled through this IPL and Dhoni is guilty of shielding Jaddu when left handers are at the crease. Y has CSK paid $2mill for him if he is not going to be asked to bowl? Y has Morkel been continually pushed down the order, when he is clearly the in form batsman? Why did Dhoni drop Du plessis for the KXIP match when he is CSK's highest scorer this year? Why did he persist with Yo Mahesh when he is clearly not up to standard? Dhoni's decisions need to be questioned and he has a lot to answer to CSK fans

Posted by hari040761 on (May 18, 2012, 4:28 GMT)

friend no narine kolkatta would have packed. no malinga mumbai would have been packed. no gayle and ab rcb would have been packed. no morkel, pieterson dd would have been packed. but see rr. they used the local talents and won matches with local guys contribution. rahane, chandila(unknown till date), dravid, trivedi, menaria, ankit. see kxi awana, mandeep, praveen see warriors dinda, nehra, kartik, kumar. but in csk no jadeja, vijay we would have won many matches. $2million worth player coming in at no.6 for batting and also partime bowler to bowl one or two overs that too not in all the games. shame. he should have been atleast tried to open the innings with dupli.csk doesn't have genuine top order batsmen as raina, hussey, dupli, dhone, bravo, morkel are all middle. and also no genuine fast bowler as bravo and morkel are fourth or fifth bowler for thie country and some times they even don't bowl. CSK should watch bigbash and champions league before next auction.

Posted by bhrangi on (May 18, 2012, 4:27 GMT)

@srinideva : Dhoni's lucky time is gone.We have seen it in the last 2 tests and CB series. If team wins every one hail Dhoni, if team loses everyone blame team members (LOL). Dhoni himself has to change his batting strategy, he always want to finish the game in last over. When Gambhir said it before, everyone yelled at him. We are gonna lose this T20 WC am sure abt it :(. By the way am from Chennai-Tambaram.

Posted by   on (May 18, 2012, 3:47 GMT)

dhoni a lucky captn not a best...see the past..two wc,s who did.....just firing a six na he became a best captn.....he z the captn for best indian team....

Posted by CSKftw on (May 18, 2012, 3:44 GMT)

Murali Vijay, Raina and Dhoni were out of form throughout this IPL. I don't know why they still persist with Vijay, even in last year's IPL the only match where he scored anything significant was in the final. Aniruddha Srikanth and Albie Morkel were the only in-form batsmen for CSK during this IPL so they should have come higher up the order instead of the other batsmen such as Dhoni who simply wasted too many balls. I'm disappointed that Aniruddha was given very few chances throughout this IPL even after he won CSK that game against Rajasthan Royals. The fact that Dhoni has been successful in the past does not make him immune to criticism. His captaincy has been very ordinary since the England tour in 2011 and now even his batting is letting him down. CSK would have already qualified had they not experimented too much in the first half of this IPL by picking players like Saha and persisting with non performers like Vijay and instead given players like Anniruddha more chances.

Posted by srinideva on (May 18, 2012, 3:24 GMT)

To my dear CSK fans, Don`t worry guys, we dominated four seasons of IPL. there is no team in the IPL have the record or guts to compete with this Chennai team. may be this is not our turn in 2012. Still i`m proud to be a CSK fan. we need to back him (Dhoni) for what he did in the past. For the first time in history we are not gonna make it to the playoff. but chances are there. Good luck lions.....

Posted by   on (May 18, 2012, 3:13 GMT)

Dhoni is trying to show his as a good finisher. Just wasting the balls till last 2 overs and trying to hit after. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. As many people said, Jadeja (bleddy Jaddu) is just a waste. Should send Aniruth 4th down. Still keepinng the fingures crossed.

The latest trend of MSD continues.. He waited for Aus to beat SL in CB series to have a berth in final, SL to beat Ban to get Asia cup final berth and now, again need to wait for other teams to beat the competitors.. For me, he looks very tired both physically and mentally.. He has just played amount of cricket which no one would have dreamt of and handling a team in and out all through a year, travel, ads, media, dealing with lots of money and of course, the reported rifts with his close teammates.. From the Indian team perspective, it will be better to rest MSD for some 6 month period and have the team under Gambhir who displayed excellent qualities as leader in KKR.. A good captain always handles bowling properly.. MSD always had done decent with batters but not as inspiring for the bowlers.. Gauti is a bit reverse.. Considering the ammunition in Indian batting, it will be better to have a captain who can handle bowlers better as batting can take care itself most times..

1. as told by jimmy CSK should be careful and change their strategies during auction. Jadeja is utter failure. for his money they shuld have purchased four players like narine, philander some genuine bowlers and also got some good opening batsmen (local talents). what tyagi, joginder, mukund doing and why vignesh, vasudevadas not given single chance. 2. Dhoni should step down as captain valuntarily and should concentrate on his own game and let the board decided for the next generation keeping in mind the 2015 world cup and t220world cup. (captaining with black sheeps in the team is difficult) 3. dhoni should change his approach and faith towards others talented cricketers which is the main reason for others opposing. 4. Dhoni lost try series in Australia due to tie with srilanka, asia cup due to loss against bangladesh and now IPL. It is right time for dhoni to realise change is the only thing which never change and what is his job and position

still CSK has chance to get into semis............. i guess it will happen.... MSD is the lucky man.......

(Q) "Bollywood heroines" and "Dhoni"...what do they have in common ?? (Ans) They both look 'pretty ordinary' without 'makeup' and 'luck' respectively. (Inf) Indian national team can not depend on a captain whose game plans are stupid and defensive at their best. People who are saying Dhoni won us T20 and ODI world cups ... give me a break. T20 world cup has been won based on the heroics of Yuvraj, consistent opening performance by Gambhir and Shewag, some ferocious bowling by Sreesanth (remember how Gilly and Hayden got bowled) and finally some intelligent and economic bowling by Bhajji. Again in ODI world cup....top performers for India are Yuvraj, Gambhir, Shewag, Raina and co ... more or less same set of guys who won us the T20 world cup. I do not understand how every body can forget how much chaos Dhoni created with his captaincy in the league stages of ODI world cup. Giving the credit of these 2 great world cup wins to Dhoni's captaincy is just unfair to the above mentioned heros

Posted by gdalvi on (May 18, 2012, 1:59 GMT)

Dhoni and Srikkanth were responsble for favoring mediocre TN/CSK players like Vijay, Mukund, Badri, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin over real talent like Rahane, Rohit (check his FC average) and others. In last 4 long years, can you identify a single players you have made his spot permanent in the team (Kohli still has some way to go in tests) We are still talking about filling #6 spot vacated by Ganguly. And of course, last year Dhoni and Srikkanth tried their best to force seniors out to make space for CSK/TN players. I am glad CSK and Dhone are out. Hopefully Srikkant will follow the suite and let the process of team rebuilding start with best players in country - not just the 'friends' of Dhoni/Srikkant. Please publish.

As a CSK supporter, its obviously disappointing and heart-breaking to see them lose. They've given us lots of reasons to cheer over the last 5 seasons. And in sport, its not possible to keep winning. CSK will have to re-group, and come back stronger next year. Lets acknowledge that the other teams, particularly DD (with KP, Mahela) and KKR (Narine) have made huge progress. Perhaps, its time to for CSK to start planning to re-structure the team that will dominate for the next 5 seasons.

Posted by   on (May 18, 2012, 0:03 GMT)

Dhoni will be waiting in the sidelines for other teams to play out an equation for his team to qualify. He's been doing it as Indian captain of late, now he'll do it as CSK captain too.

Posted by Jammy7427 on (May 17, 2012, 23:14 GMT)

Dhoni flopped again.. why he is keeping more trust on Jadeja and why not with Albie..... If dhoni is not in good form promote Srikanth or Morkel up the order who could pick up the run-rate... Pathetic performance of CSK.... Srinivasan should invest on quality players... wasted a huge amount on Jadeja... try different options.. get some good bowlers in the next IPL.... Better luck next time.....

Dhoni has achieved more than any player in this IPL. He has captained India to victory in the T20 WC, 50 overs WC, and also taken India to the top in Tests!! Furthermore, he has won the IPL for Chennai on two occasions. Which other player in the world at this moment can boast of such credentials. So what if CSK is out of this IPL....he is not solely to blame, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin(look how Narine performed, and also other spinners), and a few others have performed miserably, and since this is a team game, CSK has suffered. It may be a blessing in disguise for MSD, as he will gain some much required rest before he takes on the mantle for India in the forthcoming future. CSK, was a good team, and is a good team, but this time they have not managed to get it all together. Better luck next time, if they don't qualify this time.

I do not understand this mindless Dhoni Bashing. He led us to worldcup glory twice, to No.1 Status in tests, Won 2 IPLs and 2 Champions League Trophies. CSK fans need to realize that without Dhoni, they would not have won so many trophies! I am surprised that one bad season has suddenly made him the villain for CSK fans! Grow up people!

RIP CSK!!! This is the start of the death in Tamil Nadu cricket lol!!!

Posted by ruchinn on (May 17, 2012, 22:08 GMT)

All of those who take pride in running down Dhoni are thankless people and Dhoni doesn't need such fans anyway. One may like him or hate him, Dhoni has won T20 , ODI world cups & he has contributed in a big way. He has won IPL & CLT20 with a set of people where all the players came from different backgrounds. Dhoni is a true leader & some of the people who are running him down are great examples of crab mentality who know only one thing & that is to run down your OWN!!! IPL has improved this year & we should be proud that such a product is coming out of India.

Always loved the sportsmanship spirit of Gilchrist. In todays match, he didn't took the 3rd run (which was very well on), when he saw that fielder got injured while fielding the ball.

There is no chance for CSK this year. Go KKR Go.

Posted by Rick777 on (May 17, 2012, 20:34 GMT)

I do not like MSD that much. But he is a very good player & captain. So just because of 1 bad session, that doesn't mean he should be bashed. Blame the others too then, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin have not done any good.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 19:48 GMT)

I also do not like the behaviour of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sewagh.Who are they to decide who should be captaining the Indian Team.Ultimately it is the job of the selectors and BCCI.Disobedience cannot and should not be tolerated. You do ur job and the selectors do their job. If MSD is at the helm of affairs means others should listen to him.If you have better ideas come with that.Revolting is not the option.IF MSD is replaced with someone else so be it and others should listen to him.

For me MSD is a great captain and an Individual.India owes to him so does CSK. As the tamil saying goes kayikira marathikku than kalladdi padum.Means the tree which bears the fruits gets the most attention.Mumbai has been so hyped they are yet to bethe IPL champs so are others Only CSK has been twice. Long live CSK.

Dhoni became famous for his aggressive batting, after that the people and himself forgot that. He is not a tactical batsman he is a hitter like yousuf pathan.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 19:10 GMT)

Look at the all big mouth chirping against Dhoni and CSK. They forgot that no other captain or team has done half as good in IPL than CSK and Dhoni. One poor season and knives are out for Dhoni. Check the stats of Viru, Gauti and Tendulkar. How many IPL cup they have?

Posted by 30-30-150 on (May 17, 2012, 19:07 GMT)

Selectors, please no Dhoni for World T20. We have had enough of his defensive approach both as a batsman and as a skipper. Make Gambhir the captain for ODIs and T20s. My WT20 squad - 1) Gambhir [c] 2) Sehwag 3) Rahane 4) Ro.Sharma 5) Raina 6) Karthik/N.Ojha [wk] 7) I.Pathan 8) Ashwin 9) Ra.Sharma 10) Yadav 11) Aaron.... Reserves - 12) Rayudu 13) YUVRAJ (?) 14) Nadeem 15) Dinda/Awana

I'm glad that we will no more see CSK fans boasting "CSK is the only team in IPL to make it to the semis every season" LOL. Feel for them.

I hate all the hate comments on MS.Dhoni.Look when this guy was winning for you u were all praise for him now when CSK is on the brink(not yet out) U guys are unfair to him.Look CSK cannot win always nor does MSD can be the best captian always. How if other teams also think the same way.Look how SRK has misbehaved just b'coz his team KKR has not won not even reached the final. We CSK has been twice champions we cannot be always.Next Time is yet due we can become even this time.So wait and see.

Thank God RCB won the match against DD and they will win against DC also. If by luck CSK enter the playoffs then their shortcomings will not be come to light. Raina should learn how to bat according to the situations not go for every ball. Jadeja is Jadeja contributing nothing but played all the games. Ashwin is disappointing. How Naraine is bowling? Is it because of natural ability or sheer practice. No wicket taking bowlers in the team and poor death over bowling cost them the tournament. Better selection next in the next IPL CSK

Posted by prakhar24 on (May 17, 2012, 18:19 GMT)

Now point table is very interesting if RR win there both match and rcb win there last then RCB and RR would be in last 4. If RR won both, RCB lose last matc and KIP won his last then RR and KIP would be in top 4.

Don't forget.. This loss of chennai gives happy to KKR for now they are qulaified for playoffs.. (Thanks to KXIP)..

Posted by pai11 on (May 17, 2012, 17:27 GMT)

Year 2010; KXIP vs CSK @ Dharamsala: CSK had to win that match & they won it & Dhoni told this in the presentation ceremony: "Your franchise pays so much money for you, you should at least make the semi-finals." Year 2012; KXIP vs CSK @ Dharamsala: CSK had to win the match & they were brought down by KXIP.... what a great leveller game of Cricket is...

switched on IPL a bit late towards the business end and could any one help out.wats Anirudha srikanth's role.is he a batsman or a batting all rounder?he bats way down the order for a batsman and cant see him bowling either.but he is a permanent member of the squad interesting.saw the freakinsh innings against RR and it only compounded my doubts regarding his role.RR was REALLY un lucky to lose that match

MSD, please try to understand what has happened to your Midas touch. You are far too valuable and always have been to be going through such a poor run. Please make a comeback and shut the mouths of all your critics just like you did in WC Final.

Mr Dhoni, pls understand one thing, YOU R NOT DOING A FAVOUR TO ANYBODY PLAYING CRICKET FOR THE COUNTRY OR FOR CHENNAI. If you are not interested get the hell out of here and hang up ur boots.

I feel bad for CSK & MSD. But the truth is they were just not good this time at all. Looks like MSD may leave CSK & opt for new Jharkhand team next year. Srinivasan can make his Ashwin, Vijay etc as Captain. Raina also may look for greener pastures.

Sorry Dhoni you donot have a committed team with energy this time.

I pray luck to favor this time too. But the way in which RCB batted, i feel i have to switch off the TV and go for bed till IPL-6.

Better luck next time

Poor CSK! They got victim of Jadega's bad luck. Where he goes, brings bad luck. Sold for so much and did almost nothing. CSK is way to overrated and only Albie morkal and Bravo won them majority of their matches, otherwise it's a hopeless team with an exhausted captain, who's running short of "LUCK".

Posted by ElBeeDubya on (May 17, 2012, 15:34 GMT)

There was nothing wrong with the wicket. CSK was not playing good cricket this season. Batsmen were hardly firing which put too much pressure on the bowlers. It is one thing to lose because of excellent performances by the competing teams but CSK also lost a couple of matches because of very poor death over bowling. CSK has the best fielding unit on paper but their on field performances in that front was below par for most of the season too. In other words, CSK had problems with BATTING, BOWLING AND FIELDING this year. The fact that they are still officially in the hunt for a place at this stage of the tournament says a lot about the overall QUALITY of the league.

Posted by aujender on (May 17, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

I think Dhoni has got his due. He has been after the senior players including SRT. No all those three seniors whom Dhoni rotated has come hard against him. Veeru's DD and Gauti's KKR has already secured the first two places. Sachin MI is also sure of the place in next round. And if Dhoni's CSK has any remote chance then Veeru will make it sure that it does not happen. He has shown his intention in today's match against RCB by not only sitting out of the match but also kept out most effective bowler of the team i.e. Morkel to take rest so that there is not even a remote possibility of CSK being in the contest. Dhoni has got his due for arrogant and adamant behavior third time in a row in a short duration. First India was of the Tri series in Australia, then in Asia cup again it did not reach the final and thirdly it is out of 5th edition of IPL. I think it is good if Dhoni learn from all these result and take rest himself instead of giving rest to the seniors

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 15:32 GMT)

@rahulcricket007 Raina wasn't that bad in CB Series. Compare him with likes ofSehwag,SRT,Sharma. You will get your answer.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 15:32 GMT)

Reminds me of India vs England! Beautiful weather, excellent pitch for seamers and nothing going Dhoni's way. Poor guy needs to take a brk frm cricket and spend time for himself.

Time for the guys to rest and gain some form for the ICC schedule. CSK did not play like champs this season apart from a here n there individual brilliance. So what., CSK is all about passion. We will always support you guys! Cheers... :)

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 15:26 GMT)

that is consistency in captaincy failure continues. Dhoni starts using players as gold if they can perform like diamond after WC victory for team on the other side Gambhir terns silver into diamond with his aggression and smart head. Such attitude is required for any team.Chennai always looks weak at the begining since last two tournaments. In wc you can't be loose you have, to be aggresive and smart headed like Gambhir. I think Gambhir have to lead 2012 t20 WC if India wants to win it otherwise results will be simillar for India as in last two t20 WC.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 15:24 GMT)

Dhoni needs to sit back and learn from the mistakes. He failed as batsman and a captain. He always favoured few players in IPL and International matches. And finally CSK never played as a champion team in this edition, they deserved to go home.

Posted by Full-Blooded-Wallop on (May 17, 2012, 15:19 GMT)

Yeah drop dhoni, how the hell he didn't take CSK to 5th consecutive semifinals and could not win the IPL for the 3rd consecutive time. We are 'true' fans and can't tolerate a single loss. Team should always win. CSK should keep winning IPL till 2045 and then some more. Sack Dhoni and also raina, ashwin, vijay.

Yeah! right from the 1st match they never looked like Champions... may be this time they are not. But lets not be over critical.. they are the the best performing teamunit till now.. for all those who dont supprt CSK always wanted CSK to loose even if their own team did not win. This is how potential/envious they have always been.. Well this time many wud like to see DD or KKR lift the Cup... So do I... Well CSK take rest.. have fun and dont forget to see who wins the final this time. May be it'll motivate you get back the cup next season

If Azhar Mahmud world get visa on time, the team would win at least one more game and could be in the play off. He could not play first 3 games.

Posted by pjny on (May 17, 2012, 14:29 GMT)

@guptahitesh....David hussey was a nervous captain...look at the kxip run rate. Even though he got a very balanced side..read azhar mahmood entry and awanas form...he could not guide kxip in crunch situations. remember we lost rcb match only coz he gave the ball to chawla in 19th over. kxip lost last year matches only coz of husseys failure throughout the season, Had gilchrist not injured...with this balanced team....kxip would have been in playoffs by this time. Hussey is an ok player and captain.

Posted by hulk777 on (May 17, 2012, 14:29 GMT)

Something is really fishy with CSK batting. Especially dhoni, every time CSK struggles he is one player who slows the things down against his natural instinct. With BCCI president closely linked to CSK, anyone in that team can be forced into mal practice, will be really sad if that is the case.

Posted by Sadiqahmed on (May 17, 2012, 14:29 GMT)

Bravo Punjab. At 40 plus Gilchrist has proven that he is a unique cricket personality. At the right time he led his team from the front. CSK has a superior line up, probably the best in the IPL. But there is also a saying too many cooks spoil the broth. Don't know what really went wrong with CSK but it is likely they are not trying hard enough or gelling as a team. Also one wonders why was Jadeja paid $2 million? His marginal contribution was negligible and I doubt CSK would have missed him if he was nit bought. The 2 million dollar buy ins should only be reserved fir a few world class players like Gayle, De Villiers, Gautam Gambhir, Pietersen, Jayawardene,, Narine and Malinga. Nobody else I believe is worth that much. Sadiq Ahmed

Crickets Gods showing their wrath Mr Srinivasan? Time for some penitence? Try an edict for some fast bouncy Indian pitches, full transparency in IPL remuneration and Indian agreement to full DRS in their international matches. That may be a good start in calming the Gods.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 14:22 GMT)

that's true. probably MSD is really tired of winning. for the previous two times i really wished he gets out of the tournament before the playoffs, but he went on to win the finals. and when this time when i wanted to see him win for the third consecutive time, he is hanging by a string. God help him. am i such a bad supporter that my favorite team finishes at the bottom??

Posted by aravabalaji on (May 17, 2012, 14:10 GMT)

Dhoni's penchant for Jadeja has cost CSK very much. When you are not utlising his bowling, there is no point in having him in the team as a batsman. It is baffling to see that those who performed (Duplessis/Badrinath) were benched!

@Muruganandam Eswaran i can understand ur frustration to be honest CSK does not deserve to be in the top 4 they are one of the weakest team in this IPL . Good job Punjab.

Posted by dork29 on (May 17, 2012, 14:00 GMT)

A sorry campaign from CSK comes to an end. They are all but out of teh competition. Jadeja was one of the most expensive flops of the season. For all his swagger, he was a liability in every way. Raina's consistent failures compounded CSK's misery. Morkel does clout some big ones, but as a bowler he needs to do much better. Dhoni was completely off colour. He looks tired, jaded and spent. he needs a break and a big one at that. Dwayne battled manfully, but one man does not maketh a team! I was shocked at the way Vijay stumbled. On Indian pitches he has a competent technique and hits a cricket ball as cleanly as the next person. He just never got going. Overall, Chennai seriously need to do some soul searching and buy more wisely next season. Dhoni also needs to be more flexible in his team selections and not play the same bunch everytime, irrespecyive of their performances. All through the season he has had to sit back and wait for someone else to lose, so that his team could make it.

Posted by pai11 on (May 17, 2012, 13:56 GMT)

@ Muruganandam Eswaran: this is worst wicket just coz your CSK got crushed ha? this was a very sporting wicket. you had to apply yourselves to score runs.. unlike CSK batsmen who played a lot of cross-batted shots... these type of wickets are much better than your "Chennai" wicket...

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

what an one sided game. CSK are champions? my foot ! Congrats to Punjab. Although i hate Azhar Mahmood(ever since my childhood days) i support punjab only for Gilli !! And CSK please drop Dhoni. He is bored of winning trophies i guess and it shows. Next time make some other young player as captain.

Posted by   on (May 17, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

Adios CSK - good to see Srinivasan's machinations come to naught. The match also showed up Dhoni's lack of captaincy and batting skills exposed. But then the BCCI bodkins are not known for their grey matter.

Posted by skyeshwin on (May 17, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

If MI and DD win their remaining games, CSK will qualify for playoffs for sure. Else they wont.

Posted by aravabalaji on (May 17, 2012, 13:53 GMT)

CSK would rue the absence of Badri very much. He is the man who rises up to any sort of crisis whether it is a top order collapse or difficult batting conditions. It is foolish to leave him in the scheme of things. Dhoni has let down the team not only by his insipid batting and also by man-management.
