Mumbai face dangerous Chennai in knockout clash

Match facts

Wednesday, May 23, 2012
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Such is the knockout format of the IPL that a side that won eight and lost seven games during the league stage now has a chance to win the tournament. When as many as four out of nine teams - eight during the first three seasons - make the playoffs, such things are bound to happen. Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, happen to be that side this season.

It is not Super Kings' problem that the format is such. While they have had to depend on three other teams messing up their qualification chances this season, the fact is that those three sides did mess up. And Super Kings would still not have qualified had they not won a few games from seemingly hopeless positions. Against Rajasthan Royals, they needed 43 from 22 deliveries. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they needed 43 from 12.

Mumbai Indians, the Champions League Twenty20 2011 winners, may have won ten games, but as always, haven't quite dominated as much as a side with so much quality should have. They have had their share of come-from-behind wins as well, including chasing 172 after being 51 for 5 against Royal Challengers.

Mumbai Indians have scored their runs at 7.43 an over; Super Kings at 7.60. Mumbai Indians have gone for 7.54 an over; Super Kings for 7.58. There is not much to choose between the two on these parameters. On a Bangalore pitch, which has been the best this season for batting, with a scoring-rate rate of 8.31 an over, Mumbai Indians' powerful line-up gives them a slight edge, as does their tendency to contain by taking wickets rather than choking the opposition batsmen.

These sides played the 2010 IPL final, which Super Kings won by 22 runs after Mumbai Indians adopted some strange tactics, sending Abhishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh ahead of Ambati Rayudu, JP Duminy and Kieron Pollard. Whatever their form going into the playoffs, no side plays the crunch games better than Super Kings.

Form guide

Chennai Super Kings: LWWWL (most recent first)
Mumbai Indians: WLWWL

Players to watch

Suresh Raina, the highest run-getter in the IPL, has made 341 runs this season, but they have come at a strike-rate of 126.76, as against a Twenty20 career strike-rate close to 140. The sight of him heaving sixes over midwicket in the yellow Super Kings uniform has been a fixture throughout the five seasons of the IPL. Will he help them avoid elimination tomorrow?

Kieron Pollard has had a productive season, making 204 runs at 145.71 and picking up 15 wickets at 7.93. Add to that his sharp fielding and safe catching. He had come in at No. 8 in that 2010 final with the game almost lost by then. What will he do in the 2012 eliminator?

During his Man-of-the-Match performance against Delhi Daredevils in Chennai, Ben Hilfenhaus uprooted Virender Sehwag's off stump with a late outswinger in the first over, and three balls later, dismissed David Warner. Michael Hussey has said that the new ball will be crucial in Bangalore. That adds more importance to Hilfenhaus' role.

Team combination

Dwayne Smith's explosiveness with the bat - demonstrated earlier this season when he had three balls from Ben Hilfenhaus to score the 14 needed for victory, and did - should get him into the XI. Lasith Malinga and Pollard are guaranteed starters. Who will get the fourth overseas player's spot - James Franklin or Herschelle Gibbs? With so many hitters in the line-up, it makes sense to go for the all-round skills of Franklin. Their latest opening combination, Sachin Tendulkar and Smith, worked for Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. Will Smith partner Tendulkar again on Wednesday?

With MS Dhoni playing both the overseas allrounders, Dwayne Bravo and Albie Morkel, whenever they've been available, two spots remain. Hilfenhaus, who has been outstanding apart from those three deliveries to Smith, should take one place. Will Super Kings choose their highest run-getter of the season, Faf du Plessis, over the seasoned Michael Hussey? Ideally not.

Meetings this season

In the opening game of this season, Super Kings collapsed to 112 in Chennai, and Richard Levi shut them out with a fifty on IPL debut. It was Mumbai Indians' turn to collapse, from 134 for 1 to 159 for 8, at the Wankhede Stadium, before Smith's last-over assault got them home.

Stats and trivia

  • Super Kings have the best win-loss ratio in the IPL - 1.45. Mumbai Indians are next with 1.34.
  • Mumbai Indians have taken the most wickets in the IPL - 480.
  • Michael Hussey has the highest batting average for Super Kings - 39.76.

    Quotes

"We've stumbled through a number of times to get into the semi-finals. I remember when Dhoni hit two sixes against [Kings XI] Punjab a couple of years ago, that was the difference in finishing fourth and in finishing sixth or seventh. You can look at it as a lucky way, because other teams were defeated in the last few games. But we were able to get enough points in all of our matches leading up to the finals."
Chennai Super Kings' batsman Michael Hussey

A great day for me as one of the worst team of the tournament will be eliminated.. hate both MI and CSK.

  • POSTED BY Cricpatron on | May 23, 2012, 13:51 GMT

Toss may be an important factor, regardless both captains would want to bat first. Mumbai might be happier either way. CSK are no longer batting like the champions and their bowling with the exception of foreign players look rather innocuous. Neither teams show the passion and hunger as much as Delhi or Kolkatta, so it remains to be seen which of the two no-so-better teams is going to show up in Bangalore. Going by the recent past records, odds are in favor of Mumbai.

Luck is always on our side ... MS is a cool decent caption... win or lose he wil be cool ... i think today match wil be rocking by CSK......

CSK is designed to win matches especialy in tough times it has perfect blend of mixed talents. Other than last punjab match they dominated KKR, DD and RR like a true defending champs.....Pressure is not new to them hope CSK rock today...

My three advices to CSK for the eliminator game are :

    1) If you win the toss, Dhoni please bowl first. There may be slight rain in B'lore as well,so D/L will help. Even if it doesnt rain bowl first.

    2) If you bat first, bat without fear. Just go destroy the bowling attack. This is an excellent pitch with short boundaries, you'll have gr8 batting talents, just go and clean mumbai's bowling (even malinga !) and try to reach 200+.

    3) While bowling, please Dhoni, don't give any over to Jadeja. He'll go for many runs. 4 overs to Hilfenhaus, Bravo, Ashwin & Jakati. 2 overs to Raina & Albie.

As for Mumbai Indians, the only advice I would like to give them is surrender to CSK !!Your overratted batting and bowling has more weaknesses than Chennai :P Which team collapses to 24-7 in T20 ??? Don't worry CSK, no weapon is as deadly as revenge !! All the best !!!

Toss plays a crucial role in knock-out games, as chasing team gets under more pressure. It was proved in DD vs KKR match. MI is favourite on paper. But CSK raises it's performance bar when pushed against wall.. Until & unless Sachin, Smith & Pollard explode with the bat, CSK is more likely to win this match if they bat first.. If MI bat first, then it depends on how the opening partnership of Hussey & Vijay face Malinga. Also it will be interesting to watch if Raina strikes form. If he does, the CSK will be surely the favourites to win this tournament, especially next two games are going to be in their home. The main weakness of MI is their spin. Bhajji seems to be out of sorts, hence MI needs a good spin option, considering the big hitting lower middle of CSK. It's going to be a cracker of a high scoring match, that's for the sure.. May the best team win.

Smith & Sachin needs to give a superfast start... & then others need to go Bang BAng Bang... in Bangalore.... As per the Repo... MI has in Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium.. They have never lost a match here... :) So to beat Mumbai Indians in Bangalore would be another MI (MIssion Impossible) for CSK... This is gonna be very tight match... I am gonna get my PoPcorn tub ready before the match... ;)

THREE teams had to lose for Chennai to make it to the last 4 - TWO of them lost to (second?) last placed DC! Was this destiny, luck, or is there something more in this which no one is willing to talk about? All the same, ignorance is bliss for most Indians and the ultimate thrill and glamour of the game will overshadow all else!

It s amazing why CSK has forgotten W.Saha who was in tremendous form last season...just one chance & M.Vjay go on untill you click...CSK is lucky to be in the play offs...make the best use with sensible selection like SAHA,TYAGI,MUKUND...rather than stupid takes like YOMAHESH,ANIRUDH SRIKANTH....

  • POSTED BY Thyagu5432 on | May 23, 2012, 11:37 GMT

What Mumbai batting gives them the edge? It should have been "Lack of Chennai batting form gives Mumbai the edge". If Chennai batting clicks, Mumbai will run for cover. The way Chennai has been batting this season, I will be surprised if they get past to Q2. After all, there are no other matches that are going on whose result will help Chennai. All that is gone. But still I will cheer for Chennai, go CSK!

Super Kings surge every year (3rd in a row) has nothing to do with their performances but their owner (Mr. N. Srinivasan) is the BCCI President. When his term will end in 2013, Super Kings' true capabilities will come out. Till the time only IPL Champion will be Super Kings.

The match is a test of captaincy and selection panel of Chennai - on hw the read the pitch and select the team. When it comes to foreign players, I feel it is better to go for 2 best batsmen and 2 best bowlers - My team would be: Vijay, FAF, Hussey, Dhoni, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin, Jakati/Badri, Tyagi, Bollinger/ Kula, Hilf.

HELLO EVERYONE, I SERIOUSLY BELIEVE THAT FROM THIS POINT ONWARDS IF CSK WANTS TO WIN THEN THEY SHOULD GO WITH THIS TEAM IN THE FOLLOWING BATTING ORDER : 1) MURALI VIJAY 2) FAF DU PLESSIS 3) SURESH RAINA 4) MS DHONI 5) MICHAEL HUSSEY 6) RAVINDRA JAEDEJA 7) GANAPATHI VIGNESH 8) R.ASHWIN 9) SHADAB JAKATI 10) BEN HILFENHAUS 11) DOUG BOLLINGER. THIS GIVES THEM 2 SPECIALIST OVERSEAS BATTERS AND 2 SPECIALIST OVERSEAS BOWLERS. AND 2 INDIAN ALL ROUNDER I.E VIGNESH & RAVI JADEJA. HUSSEY BATS AT 5 FOR AUSTRALIA IN T20'S AND IS A GREAT FINISHER. ANYONE REMEMBER T20 WC SEMIFINAL AGAINST PAKISTAN IN WEST INDIES???

I am not a fan/supporter of CSK but a good/keen watcher of good cricket. But here and there I keep seeing/hearing that CSK reached the playoffs by luck. I don't think so. It just happened due to the schedule of the tournament as such that CSK's 16 matches were over before other teams matches. If KX1P reached the playoffs by winning their last match, will anyone say it was by luck? Think like this, if the last match in the league was CSK's & they won with same points and reached the playoff, will anyone still say it was by luck? All the teams had equal chance. All the best to all teams.

Well well well, the day of reckoning is here. Time to rue the fact that CSK could have been kept of the playoffs easily but ................. Dhoni's calm head will carry the CSK tactics and the rest of the team as usual will rip and roar. I hope it all falls in place for the CSK lions today. Have to acknowledge they have not been as consistent as usual .. \that said no other team has been consistent enough to make the playoffs every year for 5 years in a row. ALL THE BEST TO all of the team not just the playing 11 but the whole bunch including, the non playing talent gracefully sitting out, the guys behind the scenes , support staff, coaches, ball boys, physio, massagers, The rest not mentioned here just due to my ignorance NOT arrogance. Thank you to all out there with the CSK team including us fans even in foreign countries.

CSK is only team which has not given opportunity to upcoming local players from last 5 years. Their team is same all the year. Dhoni never give chance to new players like Ganguly used to give. Any take or winning only matter for CSK forget about local players.

those who were talking about CSK's luck What about MI they won against PWI by one run and against CSK with two fluke strokes.

  • POSTED BY RajuallenEmanuel on | May 23, 2012, 8:54 GMT

The Best possible XI for Chennai is Murali Vijay Michael Hussey Faf du Plessis Suresh Raina MS Dhoni Dwayne Bravo Srikkanth Anirudha/Subramaniam Badrinath Ravichandran Ashwin Ravindra Jadeja/Shadab Jakati Ben Hilfenhaus Yo Mahesh/Ganapathi Vignesh/Sudeep Tyagi

If Anirudha is fit i will go with him. Albie is very good all rounder but in a batting pitch like banglore chennai should take the field with 6 pure batsman than a bowling all-rounder, because with a extra batsman we can chase even stiff target. I prefer bravo as all-rounder because he is technically a batsman, where as albie is a clean striker. Jakati is a bowler who can bowl 4 overs so i would prefer him ahead of Jadeja, who bowls only one or two overs. Tyagi will be skiddy type of bowler who will be surprise package for the MI with his unexpected bounce and pace, rather than going with Yo Mahesh. I think the outcome of the match largely depends on New Ball Attack of CSK and Likes of Raina and Dhoni. Tyagi can share new ball.

Bravo and Morkel have been extremely important for CSK this season. Plus every side relishes having allrounders in their line up. Without Hilfy, bowling unit looks close to pathetic. Faf or Hussey is the question. Faf is in great form, but Hussey is too good to leave out. Hayden or Hussey would be different question though and Faf is no Hayden. Anyways, to be honest, neither faf or Hussey can help, unless Dhoni and Raina fire. I am praying CSK would win. Lets see.

My team would be Vijay, Hussey, Raina, Bravo, Dhoni, Jadeja, Badri/XXX, Ashwin, Jakathi, Hilfenhaus, Bollinger on batting first. On batting second, replace Bollinger with Albie. No need to have full of allrounders if there is no opportunity. This team gives a well balanced attack. All the BEST to CSK

It has not been a consistent show by CSK in this edition but they have the ammunition to ambush MI.. Heart Says CSK, Mind Says MI... Lets see what happens... With Anirudha and Bollinger out of contention, Badri should take his place in the middle order... CSK should include G.Vignesh inplace of Jakati... Vignesh is an allrounder who comes handy with both bat and ball.... I still can't forget his heroics in ICL for chennai super stars. I wanted to watch him play atleast one game in this season but unfortunately, it has not happened until now !!!

It is really must be a joke, when the writer says 'Mumbai has edge in batting over CSK'. It is T20 and not test cricket. In this form, CSK has the best batting talent. Their problem had been Dhoni's captaincy , the erratic bowling skill of 'all rounder' (!?) Jadeja and the fifth bowler slot.It will be CSK - KKR final with KKR having marginal edge due to tournament performance and best bowling attack.

@Sumanta Banarjee: Please check the points table and see if securing 17 points with better run rate is merit or securing 14/16 points which is definitely lesser than "17" points. There is no doubt that Punjab did play really very well in the later stages of the game, but they are not in playoff because they didn't win enough no. of matches to qualify. Chennai lost couple of close games, and won couple of close ones, luck is something which comes into the picture in those situations, but none gave extra benifit to CSK being most consistent team for qualification in playoffs. They have earned their place, and by merit for sure.

  • POSTED BY andrew27994 on | May 23, 2012, 7:34 GMT

I think MI should replace Franklin with Levi and Smith can bat down the order. We know that Smith has done well opening the batting in the last match but on a reasonably good batting track Mumbai can afford to try and bully Chennai's bowlers. Since the Indian bowlers from MI have proved to be effective enough they can remain in the team. CSK should replace Aniruddha with Badrinath who can provide stability to the order in case the start goes wrong. CSK have the firepower to get a big total on the board. I feel on such a pitch CSK must make a bold decision on replacing Bravo/ Hussey with Kulasekara. They should give priority to the bowling departmaent as that has looked a bit weak of late.

  • POSTED BY on | May 23, 2012, 7:29 GMT

CSK did not qualify through luck!! You can say they were lucky if random team names were pulled out of a box for the playoffs! The fact is CSK put up 17 points on the table with a good net run rate and the other teams could not match it! So where is the luck factor here? The other teams had their chances and were not good enough to take them so who's fault is that? So please stop saying it is all luck. CSK has the potential to win it but their current form and consistency is not good. They need to win 3 games in a row from here, it is possible but not likely.

As a South African it's a been a bit disappointing to see Faf miss out in the last few games, because he is a class act and he has really performed well for CSK this season, but I guess any captain would go for Mr. Cricket more often than over any opener in T20 cricket and it makes sense more so for that left/right hand combination with Vijay at the top. Hopefully we get to see Faf opening for SA in the T20 world cup later this year. And good luck to CSK this evening!

Certainly its strange fact that a team till yesterday was nowhere & suddenly gets chance to win the tournamenr. But it is the format of the game. Offcource with tallent luck factor plays very important role everywhere. As Yusuf , Raina may be a sudden star who is so far struggling thruogh the whole tournament without a single half century. Not only Raina, but all MSD wheapons like Ashvin, Jadeja etc may shine today. That is why CSK is called dangerous team. Mumbai has to tackle them very carefully. I thing after observing whole tornament, Rohit is the key factor for Mumbai. If he gets going then nobody can stop Mumbai. I have watched Rohit's knock at Eden against KKR. It was extraordinary. At Eden On slow pitch Rohit handled some of the top bowlers in world cricket verywell including Narine. Whenever Rohit performed MI won. Other batsmen of MI to have to play their roles. Lets see. In IPL MI won all last 3 encounters against CSK. But today is totally different day. All the best MI !!!

  • POSTED BY sweetspot on | May 23, 2012, 6:17 GMT

If any of us were to predict exactly the outcome of any of these games, then why watch at all? This could be a contest more of wits than of skill, and this is where I'd worry about Bhajji. He tries new things, and they look great when they come off, like opening with Smith and Sachin, even though that was against an uninspired side. But when Dhoni makes a move, it has a purpose and clear thinking behind it. MSD reads the game, but Bhajji is just trying monkey tricks to confuse people. Monkey tricks are great fun, but it is like trusting a formula one car in the hands of a risky auto driver. A couple of fast corners taken with screeching tyres, but after that, what? Anything could happen! Could be fun, still!

  • POSTED BY Fir3Blade on | May 23, 2012, 6:05 GMT

In this edition of IPL, CSK has heavily relied on Hussy\du plesis for their batting, whereas if you see MI all their batsmen have played their role to get MI through to win. Also MI bowling is par better than CSK in terms of taking wickets and it has clicked most of the times. So, my guess is if 2-3 MI batsmen click today, shall sail MI to win and CSK will have no chance else if MI batting collapses as we have seen in couple of early games, its all over for MI. So keeping figures crossed n hoping to see MI win!!!

Yes, MI's batting line-up is good. But they never allowed anyone to corner glory, other than Sachin. Look at the way Pollard has been treated over the years. With such striking powers, he would be sent after 6 or 7 down, even as Gavaskar would be lamenting as a commentator. No way to treat your star. They ill-treated Bravo too. Even with a poor strike rate and a much poorer form, Sachin would open, and be a non-playing captain too. Poor Bhajji is woefully out of form for years now; also given captaincy to bear the cross. Malinga is the only reason why they are where they are. With a negative NRR, it's pure luck they in the last four. This is the example of back-door entry, Shastry!

CSK is very dangerous when it comes for play offs. According to the past seasons CSK have done well in the play offs than MI. If we think about the 2010 IPL final where CSK beat MI even after MI came 1st in the points table. I am sure MI have done well than CSK in this season. beaten CSK in both occasions , but it is matter of keeping the nerve until the end. The way CSK got in to the play offs is very interesting and forgettable. CSK is capable of clinching the IPL 2012, anyhow will see.........................

Of all the 4 captains involved in the clash, we can certainly say Dhoni is the best..This is evident from his leadership in the victories in CL, 2 IPL titles, T20 WC and the 2011 WC. Whether they have lost to MI previously or not, they are gonna rock this year as well. They are the destined owners of the title..Ppl connecting the victory to BCCI Pres Srinivasan is total rubbish..C'mon Chennai..Chuck ur haters off!!!!!!!

They have never beaten MI since the last mega-auction (in 2011) and I don't think they will win today either. My guess is that the final will be between KKR and MI and KKR will emerge victorious.

  • POSTED BY Balumekka on | May 23, 2012, 4:40 GMT

Harbhajan has little cricketing brain as a captain. By opening the bowling with Malinga, Bhaji has not only wasted at least 2 Malinga overs at the top, but also he ensures that the opposition has more non-Malinga overs at the end to score of!

  • POSTED BY secondopinion on | May 23, 2012, 4:36 GMT

When the chips are down, the ones with stronger nerves will win. And nobody has cooler nerves than Dhoni, never mind his batting form. CSK will win today since Malinga has gone off-colour and Rohit Sharma has already played one knock of significance - he comes good once in 10 outings and the Mumbai press and commentators make him appear like a new Vengsarkar.

Franklin is bits & pieces player with sloppy fielding abilities. He's no match for Gibbs. My MI Side & batting order: Gibbs, Smith, Rohit, Sachin, Rayadu, Pollard, Kaarthik, Bhajji, Malinga, Kulkarni, Ojha - I'd drop Munaf for his poor fielding & average bowling, Vs Kulkarni's nice shapes squaring up Watson in the last game. RP isn't consistent enough. It's a batting track and ball comes on nicely so Gibbs & Smith is ideal opening pair with Sachin coming in at 4 gives solidity to the middle order. If one of the two openers get going, he can be in the company of Sachin, Rohit or Rayadu in the middle order. Kaarthik can join Pollard for slog over hitting. Ojha would be helpful against right handers, Smith, Pollard provide bowling support to Malinga, Bhajji & Kulkarni. Rohit can roll arm over if a lefty get going (Raina/Hussey). For CSK: Hussey, Vijay, Raina, Dhoni, Bravo, Morkel, Jadeja, Anirudha, Ashwin, Hilfernhaus, Mahesh. I just get the feeling that Mumbai will steal it!! :)

hope every csk players watched rcb/dc. they also heard the comments given by sunil gavaskar. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO ROTATE STRIKE, MIDDLING AND TIMING THE BALL, FINDING THE GAP AND GO FOR GROUND STROKES. ESPECIALLY RAINA SHOULD NOT THROUGH AWAY HIS WICKET BY HITTING VERTICAL SIXER TO SHORT MIDWICKET OR SHORT COVER. IF OU PLAY THREE DOTBALLS BOWLER GET CONFIDENCE. IF YOU PLAY THREE SINGLES BOWLER WILL THINK AND BATSMEN WILL GET CONFIDENCE. DON'T THROUGH AWAY A WICKETIMMEDIATELY AFTER LOSING A WICKET. (TWO SET BATSMENT ONE AFTER ANOTHER AFTER OPENERS, BADRI, ALBIE, RAINA, BRAVO, DHONI AND JADEJA CAN BE THE ORDER. OPEN THE BOWLING WITH ASHWIN. SINCE THEY ARE HAVING BIG HITTERS DON'T PLAY YO MAHESH. GIVE RAINA SOME OVERS BETWEEN 7 AND 13 BUT BEST TIME IS JUST BEFORE OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TIMEOUT.GOODLUCK CSK. WE ALL WITH YOU. BUT ONE THING YOU ARE HAVING ONLY 16 OVERS TO BAT AS SCORING AGAINST MALINGA IS DIFFICULT. ALSO YOU HAVE TO DEFEND IN 30 OVERS AS CONSIDERING BIG HITTERS OF MI.

I think Selvam Tangadourai follow csk games very closely.he has suggested csk 's faults.dhoni is the only man who makes dot balls in 18th and 19 th over if any wickets are fallen . He strike the ball strite to the fielder. If u just rotate the strike then u got 6 run.if u face 3 dot balls and got out in next ball it will be very worst . if 2 or 3 wickets has fall then send bathrinath early.he is technically strong batseman. CSK used that in previous sessions. but in this session they wasted bathri. if batting was going well send morkel earle.AND RAINA will be better bowler than JAKATHI.PLEASE DONT SELECT JAKATHI.BANGLORE will be batsmen friendly.inplace of jakathi choose anyother bowlers.why not johondher sharma????

MI looks steady and explosive as ever on paper.. All depends on Sachin as he can negotiate new ball effectively and allow the power hitters to do it in the end. Jakati should play as he had good measure of the MI batsmen especially Pollard almost every game.. MI don't have any problem as ever selecting a 11.. RP/Munaf will be the only choice they need to make..

  • POSTED BY satish619chandar on | May 23, 2012, 3:37 GMT

@johnathonjosephs : Well said.. What i felt is, Bhajji wants to sow doubts in batsmen mind that Malinga is there in middle overs and most importantly, Bhajji might feel comfortable bowling with Malinga in middle overs as he has more protection with Malinga at other end rather than bowling with parttimers where he might need to do everything - Which he is not able to do these days..

  • POSTED BY aravabalaji on | May 23, 2012, 3:33 GMT

Friends, Anirudha is out of contention as he is injured and there is no Bollinger either. Please send the more dependable Badri in top of the order. He provides solidity and has a decent strike rate of 121. In form Duplessis must play at any cost!

  • POSTED BY cricarch on | May 23, 2012, 2:19 GMT

I think MI should rest Tendulkar for a match and give Kuldeep Yadav a go, since he is one of the local rising stars. Also, Rohit should open with Harbhajan, they both make explosive starters. Rayudu should keep and put Dinesh Kartik to Long-off where he enjoys the most. Save Munaf and Harbhajan for death bowling and give powerplay overs to Ojha and Rohit. Malinga is better in slog middle overs. Bhajji should take very defensive fields against Badri and Hussy as they can explode any minute.. Well, sounds mind-boggling?? This is something that you can always expect from MI in crunch games. They know how to blow things up.

I believe Mumbai has the edge today though i want CSK to win. Form of CSK middle order batsman is a concern. Albie's failure with ball has compounded CSK problems. They miss Bollinger. Hify at start & Dougy in end would have been perfect mix for them with spinners along with Bravo holding the other end. Mumbai on other hand have been inconsistent throughout the tournament. With Mumbai top order finally sorted, batting looks settled. Mumbai with Malinga, Bhaji, Pollard, RP Singh (or Munaf) are better bowling unit than Chennai which i believe will be deciding factor. Unless, Mumbai play badly, i don't think CSK can beat them.

Sending out Smith to open the innings might be a good idea for one match but for another match it will backfire for sure. Smith should be dropped and Harbhajan should definitely open with Tendulkar. Harbhajan can play some super lightning shots and with two fielders inside the circle, he might hit half century within 6 overs. While Sachin can defend and play dot balls and release some pressure in the process.

Few tips to MSDhoni: 1. If there is an early wicket fall (within 2 overs), Badri can come as first down. 2. Consider sending Albie as 2nd/3rd down, if batting first 3. Dhoni should rotate the strike and shouldn't waste the balls. I got frustrated in early matches, he gave 3 consecutive dot balls in the 18th overs. Very costly. 4. If batting first, preserve Ashwin for the penultimate overs (like Gambir doing with Sunil Narine) 5. Handover the ball to Raina, in early overs. On his day, he can be as effective as any good spinner in the world.

All the best CSK. I hope its gonne be your day tomorrow. --Selvam T

Crunch time for the captain Harbhajan. He needs to stop with the RP Singh experiment and give his top bowler, Malinga, the respect he deserves. I don't think any cricketer in the world who would have Malinga on his T20 team would NOT open with him. Only Harbhajan would do that and it has cost Mumbai by having both RP Singh and Malinga expensive (and Malinga wicketless at that). He can potentially cost the game with his careless captaincy decisions

CSK will win tomorrow.. The key bowler will be Hilfenhaus.. He would be ready for revenge. The 4 foreign players should be Hilf, Albie, Bravo & Faf/Hussey (really tough decision). I would play Badri ahead of Anirudha because Badri can negotiate Malinga really well with his cheeky shots, whereas Anirudha would depend on power hitting and might find the scorching yorkers difficult. Other than these changes, the rest of the team should remain the same, and Dhoni has to hit well, rather than slow down the run rate which he has been doing these days.

It's going to be a close game. With a batting wicket, spinners would probably be more effective in containing runs apart from special bowlers such as Malinga and Hilfenhaus. It's going to be a high scoring game and requires long batting line up. I would open with Hussey & Du Plessis and drop Morkel. Morkel's batting won CSK games but his bowling has not been very effective and I wouldn't play him as a batsman coming so low down the order. Yo Mahesh could play instead of Murali Vijay.

CSK have too win this match they have extreme. The MI should lose they should not have Gibbs and Smith that would be great for CSK too target easily. CSK spinners and fast bowler Ben should restrict them to 100-120 that is easy.CSK should have Mahesh,Vijay,Bravo,Hussey,Morkel,Dhoni,Ashwin,Jadeja,Benny,Raina,Jakati and Du Plessis if they would replace Mahesh. GO CSK blast trample destroy MI for sure.

Finally the author has changed tunes..... I mean the fact that it has been said that CSK has made the final four by merit. And the rest of the teams have lost out due to their inability. All that now matters is the next match until the end.... ONE match at a time and the CSK LIONS are top notch in this do or die situations

i reeeallyy reeealllyy dont want CSK to win!!! cmon IPL needs a new champ!! its so booooring to hav the same champ for years!!

Biggest FLOP for MI this year is Bhajji. If im not wrong he kept his side in the Indian side for his last two years just cause of his batting. He was a bowler who could bat but this season he seems to have forgotten both.

MSD and CSK, Prove yourself! You guys look subdued. Don't show your lazy faces in this must-win match. Where are the true champions? It is an insult for CSK fans to hear that CSK entered by the back door. Are the lions sleeping? KICK THEM AND WAKE THEM UP. My playing eleven for the match against MI and DD will be 1.Hussey or duPlesis, 2.Vijay or Anirudha, 3.Badrinath, 4.Raina , 5.Morkel, 6.Bravo, 7.Dhoni, 8.Jadeja, 9. Ashwin, 10. Jakati, 11. Bollinger. To surprise MI, duPlesis and Anirudha should open the batting and 1,2,3 should bat steadily for the first 6 overs; 4,5,6 should accelerate between 7th and 14th overs and the rest steady the ship in the last 6 overs. We need a cracker of an innings from Dhoni at 007. Ashwin and Bollinger should open the bowling and pick wickets. Morkel, Bravo, Jakati and Jadeja need to dry-up the runs. CSK has to raise their fielding standards to their best. Awake CSK, arise to the occasion, and STOP not till the goal of HATTRICK IPL CROWN is reached!

"MI has and edge"! no way its a do or die game and no team is better than CSK in this situation. Also as long as Sachin and Harbhajan are there MI has no chance. I feel bad for Rohit, Pollard and Malinga, the kind of quality players they are, they surely deserve a better team or at least a better captain!

I wish CSK wins, but I don't care any more. They have made it to play-offs 5 out of 5 times and that is good enough for me now. But the champions that they are, I won't be surprised if they win IPL5 :)

tats rite.. since the pitch favours batting and spinner for later MSD will go with - 1.Murali Vijay/Abhinav Mukund 2.Micheal Hussey(for me it should Du Plessis) 3.Suresh Raina 4.Dwayne Bravo 5.Ravindra Jadeja 6.MS Dhoni 7.Albie Morkel 8.Aniruddha Srikanth 9.Ravi Ashwin 10.Shadeb Jakati 11.Ben Hilfenhaus

Do u still say MI a stronger Batting Lineup??

Dwayne smith won't stand a chance against hilfenhaus. Few streaky 4s and he will be in the hut. CSk win this one easy. Bangalore crowd supports CSK. Crowd energy make its a home game for CSK. I really don'tw ant CSK win but CSK will win because players under him play well under pressure because dhoni makes better decision if he has all the tools in his pocket. He is like a python waiting for prey if he has all the tools. MI has better players but Bhaji is not a good captain.
