Big Picture

Virender Sehwag and Delhi Daredevils are in a familiar position. Like this year, they had utterly dominated the 2009 season, before their mighty batting line-up faltered in the semi-final, much like their flop against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. This time though, with the changed format, they get a second opportunity.

One of Daredevils' puzzling decisions in the game against Knight Riders was to send in Ross Taylor as low as No. 7, below even teenager Pawan Negi, who is in the side primarily as a left-arm spinner and isn't known for his batting exploits. TA Sekar, Daredevils' team mentor, said the team had reassessed its batting order the game; so Taylor can expect to bat at a more customary position on Friday.

Chennai Super Kings are also in a familiar position. Once again, they seem to be at their best in the final stages of the tournament. After several days of nervously watching other teams' results go their way, Super Kings looked unstoppable when they took apart Mumbai Indians on Wednesday.

They have always looked like the team with the greatest depth in their batting, and that was amply demonstrated against Mumbai Indians. Even after losing M Vijay and the IPL's highest run-scorer Suresh Raina as early as the second over, their crisis men Michael Hussey and S Badrinath stabilised the innings, before the flamboyance of MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo switched the innings mode from build to blast. Even without using the heavy-hitting of Albie Morkel, even against the bowling of Lasith Malinga, Super Kings ran up 187 and coasted to victory.

The trouble for Super Kings is that they need to bring their A game three times in five days, to beat each of other three playoff teams, if they are to make it a hat-trick of titles. They have done it once. Can they do it a second time on Friday?

Players to watch

In five years of the IPL, Mahela Jayawardene is yet to win a playoff match. He's only had two chances: once in 2008, when Kings XI Punjab were thrashed by Super Kings, and then the defeat to Knight Riders earlier this week. In addition, his form this season hasn't matched the high standard expected of him. In successive World Cups, Jayawardene has shown his ability to lift his game for the big occasion, something Daredevils would love him to do over the next three days.

Ben Hilfenhaus has taken over from Doug Bollinger as Super Kings' Australian fast bowler of choice. He's played seven matches since his arrival from the West Indies, and hasn't gone wicketless even once. After Dwayne Smith clubbed a succession of boundaries off Hilfenhaus to steal a last-ball victory, Hilfenhaus showed his temperament by bouncing back with consecutive Man-of-the-Match performances. Besides the outswinger which serves him well even in the longer formats, he has a quick bouncer, an accurate yorker and he likes to bowl full and wide to stifle batsmen. He accounted for both Sehwag and David Warner in the last game against Daredevils. Can he do it again?

Team combination

Super Kings don't like to tinker with their team composition, re-securing their core players even during the re-shuffle before the 2011 season. They have used only 17 players this year, the least by a franchise, showing how much they like a settled side. After Shadab Jakati's tight spell in the previous game with the new ball, expect him to retain his place. The only question for them is whether to retain M Vijay, or to pick S Anirudha if he is fit.

Daredevils will have to ponder whether to play an extra spinner in Chennai, or stick to their preferred pace-heavy attack. Irfan Pathan had injured his hand while attempting a return catch in the game against Knight Riders, but team mentor Sekar said Irfan was fit to play on Friday.

Meetings this season

Both encounters this season have been one-sided: Daredevils won by eight wickets at the Kotla after four run-outs undermined Super Kings, and less than two weeks ago Hilfenhaus ran through the Daredevils top order to set up a straightforward nine-wicket* victory at Chepauk.

Stats and trivia

  • Suresh Raina has scored only 341 runs this season, his lowest tally in any IPL
  • Morne Morkel is three wickets away from equalling Malinga's record of 28 wickets in an IPL season
  • For stats on Super Kings' spinners' struggles at home, click here

"We have a team that is better suited to the conditions in Chennai. We have seamers who are adequate but not startling."
Stephen Fleming, coach of the Chennai Super Kings, expects the Chepauk surface to help the spinners in the side

"Ross got a 21-ball fifty against Royal Challengers in Bangalore. He showed his class there and I think he is in a good space and I think he should fire tomorrow."
TA Sekar isn't too worried about Taylor's form

i dont understand why ppl say Srinivasan has to do something with the result or the venue.?? wasnt it decided unanimously that the winner of IPL's home town will be venue for finals in the next yr's IPL final ?? CSK won they get to have the home advantage..

even now csk proved anyone in their team can pitch in whn the team most wants it..

Tell u lads this..they won in 2010 in mumbai.. so stop looking for things that u think that can actually berate the team which infact berating urself..

We CSK fans are very stable and knowledgeable .. we dont take nonsense.. also we appreciate whoever wins the competition.i said competition thts wht we appreciate.. .

i think my CSK fans will agree to that..we know CSK is the the bare minimum we expect is them to reach playoffs.. we dont really worry too much abt the results after that..cuz as champions..CSK have the class..the quality and the explosive firepower to reach playofffs.. win or lose aft that doesn really bother us..

Sehwag, warner, MJ, Rosco, Irfan. This should be the first 5 batsmen. Only then can delhi chase down any total on any ground. Please come to back to ur senses. Chennai has to be thankful to chagers for giving them the openeing. But Delhi has on one to thank for or blame if they lose this game. Come on DD, kick the CSK out. CSK does not deserve to win this IPL.

Posted by dare_to_beat on (May 25, 2012, 13:52 GMT)

If CSK win this year's IPL (99.99% chances of wining), I can bet TV rating of IPL 2013 will be decreased dramatically. Out of 9 teams whoever performs good, CSK wins! This will make IPL boring.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 13:41 GMT)

people are saying the CSK made to the last four thru luck but let me tell all of you that CSK won 4 of their last 5 matches and that too convicnely (they dominated opposition in last 3 of their 5 games). So my question to all the persons who are criticizing CSK: How cud a team win 4 matches (by dominating the opposition) just on the basis of their luck. CSK had finished their 16 games at the time when most of the teams hav played only 14. Had CSK played a game on last sunday and despite loosing the match, people would have appreciated CSK for their excellent net runrate.

Posted by Karai on (May 25, 2012, 13:28 GMT)

@SHAKIB_IS_CLASS...You are true world is rotating because of his spin only.last match also he proved that he is best allll rounder. scored 1 runs. I think he wont get place in finals.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 13:21 GMT)

CSK will rock today.... I too agree that jaddu should be thrown out... Buying him is the only negative thing from CSK side...

Having the world's most dangerous openers Sehwag and Warner, Delhi is still struggling to produce out of them... Warner and Sehwag having good spin, pace attack... right left combination, they cannot do anything together.... All the Delhi fans expect the best from them today.... We want Delhi in the finals vs KKR....

Posted by Sehwag_Is_Ordinary on (May 25, 2012, 12:44 GMT)

Temperament and Delhi? I think these two are South Pole and North Pole much like KP and Nick Knight. Some analysis ( Analyst_c will join me soon I hope): Jayawardene definitely needs to be dropped. He gives the impression of scoring runs faster but unfortunately he plays too many dot deliveries. He is one of the worst finisher. Andre Russell should definitely play in because of batting. Taylor should play in 2nd down and Ojha in First down. After Taylor, Russell should come in as gamble. Albie Morkel needs to come up the order in place of Million Dollar Baby. Hilfenhaus despite his terrible performance should play to rattle Sehwag who fears Hilfenhaus from last Aussie tour and still is rattled from that experience.

Posted by Duplessis720 on (May 25, 2012, 12:18 GMT)

Common CSK win this match so we can get 3 cups in a row.DD has to lose this elimination round.CSK have really cool in this season the spinners and benny must bring CSK to massive win. CSK will win and has to beat them. DD should remove pathan and shewag so that CSK can win. CSK should choose Anirudha,Badrinath ,Dhoni, Bravo,Albie,Hussey,Jakati , Jedeja ,Ashwin and Benny, they can restrict them to 95-125 that is great for defending Champions .The only easy way to destroy them is too put hussey and badri openers that is great too .Go CSK megadestroy the devils

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 12:05 GMT)

Chennai will cry loudly after a defeat in final. KKR the winners.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 11:51 GMT)

it is planned for csk thats why qualifier n final venues r in chennai who blasts finally csk will win it is going according to script dont call it as dhonis luck, call it as srinivasan gambling

Posted by tdslbuwa on (May 25, 2012, 11:40 GMT)

I saw some people have commented about Shakib comparing him with Kallis.Kallis is the top allrounder in the modern game without a doubt. So please dont compare him with a odinary player like Shakib al Hasan.Compare Shakib with all rounders of his class like Ravindra Jadeja and Elton Chigumbura.

Posted by rkgod on (May 25, 2012, 11:40 GMT)

When CSK is on song nobody can stop them and as much as I would like to say that Delhi is at the top and got a star studded side, they are also the most vulnerable in the tournament after Deccan and Pune, because most of their results have been dependent on the top order, the top 4 actually, namely, Sehwag, Warner, Jayawardene and Naman Ojha. After KP's departure, they are quite unstabilised in their batting, with the likes of Ross Taylor hardly firing, and unless one of the top 4 batsmen, mentioned above fire today, they dont stand a chance against the upbeat CSK that too in the business end of the tournament, where they are a misery to the opposition, absolutely reckless and determined. Go CSK!!!! But please throw out Murali Vijay and get Anirudha instead of him. Let Badri open with Hussey, then probably try Morkel or Jadeja, then Raina, Dhoni, Bravo, Anirudha. And as I see it, like miliions of others, its CSK all the way!

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 11:22 GMT)

For those who says CSK is not dependent on LUCK saying that they maintained good net run-rate, CSK IS LUCKY AS THEY NEEDED 3 RESULTS TO COME THEIR WAY AND THEY GOT IT RIGHT.

Posted by Gappistan on (May 25, 2012, 11:21 GMT)

Please don't compare shakib with Kallis.. In the qualifier against delhi it was shakib only who got out without wasting many bowls so tha pathan and shukla can score runs quicker. In the bowling also he was the one who blocked Doctove's vision and got the wicket of David warner and that pressure mounted on sehwag and he also got out in balaji's over so it was shakib's effort. Kallis scored only 30 runsr with a strike rate of less than 90 and took wickets of not in form players like Taylor and Venu

Posted by andch on (May 25, 2012, 11:20 GMT)

Taylor has only had one good innings in the whole tournament. Some of his innings have been poor eg 16 in 27 balls against Kolkota. Others, like Ganguly have received critisicm for poor strike rates. Strange that Taylor has received little if no criticism and more strange, is that he keeps getting selected.

Posted by rockz.andy on (May 25, 2012, 11:19 GMT)

to pull the crowds for the final match, the fate is already decided CSk will win this game, and to pacify the SRK's ego KKR will lift the cup. Shakib is the overrated player in the section of cricinfo by BD fans..for them he is a god for rest of the world he is just an flat track bully who can bowl a little with no variation

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 11:01 GMT)

Shakib is the real god of cricket. I have seen Sachin's leg shivering when he found Shakib holding his ball. So don't say bad about Shakib.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:50 GMT)

sure dhoni's performance is gonna to help CSK... CSK ROCKS!!!!!

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:47 GMT)

whoever wins the day which team do will b in final.... and everyone just say so easy csk carrying luck but for me they played better cricket than the underdog its not so easy to get the run rate up they played well to get those run rate without loosing cheaply..... one thing just remember if u play well u will b in final thats the equation there is no luck to win game except toss... banglore won but didnt won big but chennai won big so they in its not luck if u have knowledge u might have understand this so next time just dont say its luck that easy......

Posted by SHAKIB_IS_CLASS on (May 25, 2012, 10:45 GMT)

SHAKIB is the best allrounder and he has the power to cure Global warming. You guys know how the world rotates, its coz SHAKIB is spinning it in his hands. MIND IT...

I think Delhi will win........!

Posted by Pratapchauhan on (May 25, 2012, 10:39 GMT)

I think that it is the best time for Viru and Warner to blast......if they missed it then many time required for this opportunity again....just going away.......................

Posted by go_pk_go on (May 25, 2012, 10:32 GMT)

The final will be played in chennai and today's match is between DD (Delhi) and CSK (Chennai), so its obvious, who is gonna win today :-).

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:25 GMT)

Those people who are calling Sakib the best allrounder does not know much about cricket. Yeah Sakib is a good cricketer but Kallis has been in top since Wasim-Waqar-Mcgrath days. He has deflected many silly situations for SA and has delivered with both bat and ball. for Sakib to be best allrounder he has to deliver at least for more then 5+ years on a consistent basis.

Posted by ShakeelSardar on (May 25, 2012, 10:22 GMT)

send in Ross Taylor as low as No. 7, below even teenager Pawan Negi

It was obvious to send him as two left-handed bowlers were operative at that time.

Posted by AduAbi on (May 25, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

CSK will win the match. they had a good form playing in home last year.hilfenhaus should fire in this match. ashwin is also a good bowler. the top order should perform well against morkel. Chennai Super Kings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

It doesn't matter if Chennai is on a rise or climbing everest. they will loose by huge margin. I hate Dhoni, his jaddu and raina. Kick them out of Indian team.

chennai open with duplesii and m hussy either chance togive ganpati vignesh he is a telented olrounder in icl

@Gappistan - LOL. Superb mate. I guess from now on we will have Shakib jokes instead of Rajnikanth ones!

Posted by StevieS on (May 25, 2012, 10:12 GMT)

Phil Katon he just just a 21 ball 50, would hate to see a in form Taylor if he can do that out of form, the last game he needed 16 runs/over so a bit hard to blame him there for getting out on the slog. The thing about 20/20 is form can come and go from match to match, Pathan and Dhoni were horribly "out of form" and look what they both did in their last match, no point replacing class with a ho-hum player like van der Merwe.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:00 GMT)

on a lighter vein - WTG Gappistan..:)...Shakib will create a new record of scoring more sixes in a single match than that of Chris Gayle in the entire 2012 season.. (Kallis will be wondering what is going on, when is he not called the best all rounder in the world anymore)....

on a serious note - win or lose we Chennaites want a great game of Cricket...if we win, we win against a great team...if we lose, still, we lose to a great team...its sport after all and treat it as such....TAKE IT EASY CHAMPS...

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 10:00 GMT)

@madras boyThe last time Warner and Viru fired together, the team posted 231. This can not be repeated as Viru need to understand the price of his wicket in this match. He need to c hilfenhaus without taking any risk. Rest of the bowlers can be taken to task as word like powerplay does not matter to him.

Let Taylor be there in DD today. I would want Nadeem to replace Aaron. Not that AAron has not done a good job, but because today's pitch demands one more spinner, I feel Nadeem should be there. Let's not forget his contribution in the team too. And why do I stand up for Taylor is because if this man can come back to form today, then God save CSK spinners. Its not until quite recently when he showed signs of coming back to form against RCB & scored a 50 in just 21 balls. And then when he was promoted low down the order against KKR, he still smashed Narine for a six. I think Taylor should strike today. GO DD GO!!!

East or west Virender sehwag is the best. He is going to blast today and spread tear gas in the stadium for chennai fans.

Posted by cnksnk on (May 25, 2012, 9:17 GMT)

having read some bizzare mails on this site I think it is necessary to have some clarity on the rules 1 The finals is being played in Chennai not because cSK or srinivasan has manipulated it but the IPL rule says that the previous years winner gets to host the inaugural match and also the finals. thus match being held in Chennai is becuase CSK happens to be the reigning champions 2 Constataly it is being mentioned that CSK has come through the back door. there can be nothing farther than the truth. CSK scored 17 points and it was for the other teams to better that. The fact that none of the other teams had it in them to get it shows their inability to do well rather than any luck. 3 Some have alluded to the fact that may be some matches that are "fixed". If we question the integrity of people like rahul Dravid or Gilcrist then the world can stop playing cricket. 4 And finally if some one still thinks that CSK is lucky then the world works only on luck as cSk has reached for the 4 y

Posted by Dark_Knight2012 on (May 25, 2012, 9:15 GMT)

DD has to play loggerheads with CSK to get this one. Heart says DD, mind says DD too. But I don't think Dhoni & Bravo together can harm DD to that extent wat they did to MI. Guys don't forget that MI in this season has one of the ordinary bowling attacks. Even DD has hit MI for 207 runs. DD's bowling is far better than MI. And even if Bravo & Dhoni go for a rampage, I think DD still stand a chance if eiher Warner OR Sehwag OR Taylor play. If all the 3 play, then God Bless CSK!! I still have little faith left in taylor and would want taylor to be there instead of Merwe. When u have the option of including Nadeem in place of Aaron, then there's no problem at all. I think nadeem has done a fantastic job this season. Even on flat batting tracks his economy rate is 7-7.5, against MI & against PWI, which is a very good record.

@Alexk400 : How about his bowling of Jakati with new ball and continuing Jakati for fourth over to get Smith? Perfect balance of fast and spin.. Any captain in world need to be courageous to do things and when it fails, they will look fool for bashers and unlucky for supporter but when it clicks, they ll look great for supporter and lucky for bashers.. Dhoni just gives enough space for his players to perform and allows them to express themselves.. Other captains always puts themselves as a Head of team and makes the team follow them but Dhoni just travels with the team.. You don't need to be a monster to win..

Why you all people are calling for Vijay's head? Since making his comeback (after being dropped for 4 matches), vijay has made 136 runs with an average of 27 and strike rate of more than 120. Vijay is a big match player, how cud any one forget the innings he played in 2010 Chapions League T20 final and IPL 2011 FINAL. He got man of the match award in both the finals and it was his innings in both the matches which made the difference between CSK & LOOSERS. Remember, he was not in good touch in most part of IPL 2011 but HE SINGLE HANDEDLY WON THE FINAL for CSK. Even if VIJAY fails today and Chennai makes to the final, HE SHOULD BE IN THE PLAYING XI for FINAL.

Posted by Cricpatron on (May 25, 2012, 8:57 GMT)

It appears that DD after an embarrassing loss to KKR will be determined win this one and go on to meet KKR again in the finals. On the other hand Chennai's spinners are often found clueless even on their own pitch this season. If two of the Big Three DD batsmen get going, the result will be a foregone conclusion in favor of Delhi. The key here is who is going to hold their nerves. Regardless of who bats first, Shewag will be on a savage hunt - exactly this is where the CSK team management should work on. For Delhi their batting might should come to rescue. For Chennai, their only chance is in the hands of their lagging spinners.

DD is a fair good team than CSK. Problem with delhi is that both openors sehwag and warner..... doesnt have good foootwork... thts why sehwag gets out very easily...after scoring 4+ runs than problem is of pathan.... Why the hell they opt for pathan ... he is the bowler of IPL( to conceed maximum fours).... They should go for N chand he was good and can score 20+ runs easily.. and defintely a good fielder .... morkel.... nadeem... negi are good bowlers and remaining 8 overs cab be devided b/w umesh...sehwag... rao

Posted by madras_boy on (May 25, 2012, 8:45 GMT)

CSK cannot stop DD if warner and sehwag goes on a rampage !!! Heart says CSK...Mind Says DD... Lets see what happens.... Also dono why lot of ppl criticizing M.Vijay... Y.pathan did not fire for KKR but he fired when needed... Vijay will fire either today or in the finals (if we go !)... Having said that, I dont mind him to be replaced by G.Vignesh who was in top form for Chennai Super Starts in ICL ! But i doubt CSK will tinker with the batting...

@Saad.Navaid Shakib is the best all rounder in the world and he is a superman.. if you see the all the KKR match related comments u can confirm. These comments for shakib are real funny and whenever i am down, i read these to cheer myself up. Btw, I am a diehard DD fan and as always my hope ends when DD reaches Playoffs.. But who knows if Warner plays d way he did in Champions League, things can change.

Come On Delhi...Get one more spinner in place of Aaron. Thats It. You have everything else to beat any club. You dont need to depend on any starategies and tactics. Goto Market and Fire...

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

DD MUST play Van Der Merwe for Taylor. They clearly have no faith in the out of form and one dimensional Taylor, and VDM adds a spin option as well as a guy that can easily clear the ropes. It's a no brainer!

Posted by lakhanpal.amit on (May 25, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

problem for csk is too many allrounders ...its foolish to say dd depends only on there openers.....infact every team depend on there openers.. be it delhi or csk...chennai depends too much on their spinners if delhi can bat first 4-5 overs without loosing wicket I am preity sure.. they r gonna score 200+...chennai depends on inital burst from delhi can survive first up ,,chennai spinners will take some pasting .

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 8:17 GMT)

I am a north indian but a DIE HARD CSK FAN. I think DD gonna win this match but I would be the happiest man in the world if my word goes wrong.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

CSK should opt for srikkanth in place of Murali Vijay.Michael Hussey & Da Plusis to open the innings, skipper Dhoni to come one down ie at no;3.Suresh Raina to come lower order.Bravo & Suresh Raina to follow Dhoni in the same order followed by jadeja & Albie Morkel

Posted by hari040761 on (May 25, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

at present no need to tinker the team. Vijay should play positive and agressively He should avoid laziness and hit the spinners hard if they open bowling. Batsmen should watch field placing every ball before taking his stands. Raina should be little more careful in shot selection and placement. Straight over the bowlers head is safe for airial but not much height as long on or long off can pouch. (like Badri's wicket vs MI) Rotate the strike you will get a loose ball every over. Don't loose wickets in quick succession. Bowlers should bowl according to field placement and batsmen calibre. Fielders should be more alert and contain boundries in the first six overs. Spinners should vary the speed appreciable with good line and length. dhoni should move a little bit behind stumps for the spinners if the batsmen go for unorthodox shots like reverse sweep, scoop or late cut etc. judge the bowler for whom the day belongs to and play him carefully.

Todays DD team should be shewag, warner, irfan, ross taylor,Birt, ojha, nagar, negi, morkel, yadhav, varun.because the chennai team has 2 left hand spinners,so that only i picked birt and irfan as one down.

M Vijay has learned some dancing skills. A bit of Calipso. However as usual he would open with Hussey, struggle with about 15 to 20 deliveries put Hussey or Raina too in tremendous pressure and get out for something like 8 or 10 runs if he can score that far. He is a curse for C S K.

DD, the deserving one to be in final, but I' m sure Chennai will beat the DD to make themselves into the final. Dont know y, but it seems obvious.

@AlexK400 If u win one game, may be two, may be even 3 then u can call luck but not when you give Indian Cricket a new face at international level by lifting t20 ICC WC, Test Champions, ODI ICC WC, Two times IPL Champs, One time CLt20 which MSD has done it as a skipper. Give me name of one captain in the world who has win their side in all formats of the game at regular interval. Talking about today's game, it gonna be a good contest. No doubt DD has topped the table with dashing for of Viru, but CSK holds the edge. CSK plays with the total team contribution. No purple or orange cap in the camp of CSK. And more importantly Ruthless-Raina is due with his blitzkrieg innings of this season which you can expect it in any of the last two games left. I won't be surprised if CSK gets a hat-trick. They are invincible.

Posted by SHAKIB_IS_CLASS on (May 25, 2012, 7:28 GMT)

If CSK needs to win this game then they need to Play SHAKIB today and if Delhi needs to win they need to open with TAMIM. If both the things happen then both the team will qualify for Finals! MIND IT...

Chennai pitch is a concern for CSK this season. Too much heat and dryness killed the pitch.

it was really the same old Dhoni about 3 years back...who attacked fearlessly.. this is the natural game for him..and he should be this way leaving other specialist batsmen to defend or consolidate. he is most effective in this avatar.. hats of to you Dhoni.. you command respect from team mates, opposition and fans being this way..

Am a Fan of Delhi and Viru(Nawab of najafgarh)....Sehwag can win the game with his talent, but dhoni wins the game with other players, he simply sitting in dougout and watches how dhoni's players are playing...Delhi has no lefthander in top-order, so it is good to move pathan at No 3..GO DD...U R D WINNERS..Batting order should be ( WARNER SEHWAG PATHAN J'WARDENA ROSS TAYLOR OJHA YOGESH NAGAR MORKEL YADAV AARON NADEEM........Come-on delhi follow the batting order, u will win..........

@ ROOPAKS - Agree, MJ hasnt done anything of note so far and his role (playing 8-10 overs at a strike rate of 100-110) can be matched by ojha and rao/chand. Problem with delhi is if top order fails they fail to make a comeback and adding russell will help them fight back and will also assist taylor to play more freely as it wont all be over after he departs.

Posted by dariuscorny on (May 25, 2012, 6:09 GMT)

@Sourav Adhitya this is extremely disappointing comment from you friend where u are saying return of Aaron is costing Delhi dearly.this is absolutely wrong instead he is among the wickets and in the last match the last over he bowled there were some extraordinary misfielding efforts which spoiled his figures.he wasnt bowling bad infact if u watch the matches he played closely u will find he is the only bowler in the line up who was consistently bowling yorkers making it difficult for the batsmen to club him

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 6:05 GMT)

Alexk400......... it is funny to assume that MI, DD and KKR are better teams than CSK. The CSK has the best T20 batting line up. Their weak spot is Jadeja and of course Dhoni's captaincy.MI is the weakest of the four and DD is certainly inferior to CSK. Yes, KKR , on current performance streak, looks to have edge over CSK. But, with Balaji doubtful, they have a problem in bowling section. I am CSK fan, but do not mind if KKR becomes champion as Gambhir is the best captain of the lot. Dhoni is inferior as captain, but not below Harbhajan and Shewag.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 6:03 GMT)

@Dravid_Gravitas, see this is the problem. DD depends on their 2 openers only. But CSK play as team. Even if they loose wickets they bat deep.

Posted by Gappistan on (May 25, 2012, 6:01 GMT)

No matter who wins this match, Shakib will defeat them single handedly, he will break Mccullum record of 158 runs and also tanveer's record by taking 10 wickets. Also next year tamim will be the king he will break Gayle's record of sixes and strike rate of 200+.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:57 GMT)

Csk came from 4th position to 3rd position now. Delhi came from 1st position to 2nd position. So its time to move for csk to 3->2 position. Come on csk.. Dhoni will rock again..

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:56 GMT)

It is not wise to tamper with the XI at this stage, though Jadeja turning out to be a liability. Anirudda for Vijay can be but not necessary. CSK would likely to retain same XI that played against MI at Bangalore. Trust Badri is fine.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:22 GMT)

CSK will win they have got depth in batting. Murali Vijay has been merely a sacrifice to allow the stronger batsmen to come in. Raina just need to place his shots better. But we could see how hussey dhoni and bravo can single handedley take the game away. my csk 11 : hussey, bardri, raina, dhoni, bravo, srikanth, jadeja, morkel, ashwin, jakati, hilfenhaus,

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:17 GMT)

Co'mon CSK rock DD. And please take out vijay and bring in anirudh or mukund.

Posted by Thyagu5432 on (May 25, 2012, 5:15 GMT)

DD is overly dependent on Sehwag and Warner. For Delhi to have any chance, one of them has to fire. Unfortunately, the kind of players these two are, you cannot for sure say they will fire. Moreover, Chennai pitch is not likely to suit their style of play. They both would want the ball to come nicely on to the bat but that wont be the case here and these are players who do not know any other way to play. So DD has to make some changes to their gameplan if at all they want some chance of winning this game. Otherwise, Chennai will just walk away with the game.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 5:15 GMT)

Why are all guys who have posted here are nervous about CSK? CSK is the only team that knows to play cricket when it matters and they have proved it in the last 4 IPLs!!Dhoni is cool and no fluek. He comes good when it matters! Today is going to be Rainas and Vijays comeback in batting and Ashwin in the bowling! CSK is not like 4 individuals of DD, they are a TEAM !

only after rao and aaron coming delhi started losing matches....

sehwag, warner, ohja, jaya, taylor, nagar, pathan, negi, morkel, yadav, nadeem!

Dhoni is luckiest person. He has no strategy. he has no plans. But his team mostly wins. Mumbai Indians , DD and KKR has better teams. If CSK wins that is only because of dhoni's luck. People say he has leadership. I think he is more lucky than a leader. But if you ask me to choose between lucky guy with decet strategy vs great cunning captain , i pick a lucky guy. haha. Luck desitiny or what ever you want to call it. He somehow makes opposition makes dumb mistakes. As long as he wins , he should be captain of india. If he loses in this IPL , i will strip him of TEST captain. if he wins this IPL , he has to be test captain as long as he chose to quit.

Todays match is big pressure for both DD & CSK ,,but i think CSK going rockzzz against delhi today... CSK have good middle order line-up whether top order fails in quick section and have more than four all rounders, that might be boost for CSK... while comparing with delhi, they have two all rounders in team: one is pathan, but he is not playing well.. and another one is Russell, he is an wonderful all rounder in delhi team,, but they cant able to use him in Delhi IXs,,bcoz not more than four foreign players allowed in team.. this wil be the problem for them... if sehwag and warner fails to bat well in top order,, surely CSK going to Finals for the fourth time in IPL history....they going to face KKR....

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (May 25, 2012, 4:09 GMT)

DD is going to brush them aside. IF Sehwag and Warner stay for 10 overs, expect a 130+ by that time alone. Dhoni or Albie can't do much about it.

Posted by ravi_88 on (May 25, 2012, 4:05 GMT)

Both dd & kkr had beaten chennai in chennai comprehensively this csk shouldn't be over-confident. DD players play spin very Its gonna be csk's spin vs dd batting.apart frm ashwin both jadeja&jakati are vulnerable to quality batting.lets see if csk overcome their problem in spin bowling.gud luck to both teams.

Posted by   on (May 25, 2012, 3:47 GMT)

agree with most of u....what the hell is delhi upto...even though the team has been winning and doing well but one is never confident with delhi playing....warner and sehwag look like they want to get out each ball....i never feel confident with them batting ...suddenly after 5 innings of playing straight...sehwag has started playing stupid wide outside off stump balls.. chennai wicket is going to be a spinning wicket for sure...if delhi again play without nadeem (not that hes as good as he looked in the beginning ) but still if we play without him and negi we have no chance.....GET UP sehwag....chip in with a few overs . this is my 11 for tmrw...sehwag at 1 down (1.chand,2.warner,3.sehwag,4.jaywardene,5.ojha,6.taylor,7.pathan,8.nadeem,9.negi,10.morkel,11.yadav

Ridiculous Chennai, Shows Different Character In Play Offs, That The Only Question Is Will DDD Tackle The Pressure?

Posted by satish619chandar on (May 25, 2012, 3:14 GMT)

Delhi does have firepower to bat in the slow tracks.. Sehwag, Warner and Mahela are some of the best in any conditions and they can smash spinners very well.. If atleast one stays till 20 overs, they will have match.. The only problem Delhi has is lack of variety in spin department.. Two domestic spinners in Nadeem and Negi are left armers and one overseas in Merwe is the same.. Who knows if the CSK batsmen dont find way to counter spin, they might be in trouble.. Merwe for Ross should be a change for Delhi.. The potential of their pace trio on slow track will be tested too.. I would name DD as favorites as they have deadly batsmen and even if one clicks, it will be great game for them..

Posted by dmqi on (May 25, 2012, 3:11 GMT)

I want to see Delhi-Kolkata final. To happen that Shewag must not open, Mahela should. See through the first 4-5 overs . Then the onslaught by Shewag and Ross Taylor will do the job. The too lucky Dhoni should not play the final.

Posted by ROOPAKS on (May 25, 2012, 3:02 GMT)

instead of tailor or jayawardena.consider russell as a batsman.he is hard hitting and powerful batsman.

My Team:- Virender Sehwag,David Warner,Andre Russell(As Batsman),Ross Tailor,Venugopal Rao,Naman Ohja,Irfan Pathan,Morne Morkel,Shahbaz Nadeem,Umesh Yadav,Varun Aaron

Jayawardena dropped because of slow batting in middle order.Andre Russell is a hard hitting batsman.if he shines Delhi will surely win.Andre Russell is taken as a batsman not bowler.

Gonna be a huge match, possibly bigger than the actual final!

If Dhoni plays the way he did in the previous game, DD will get crushed. He was literally unstoppable last game, i mean 148km yorker by maglina and Helicoptered for 6? One word....... Beautiful :)

But then again, DD have the likes of Sehwag/Warner. Should be a really really good match. Looking forward to it!

Posted by   on (May 24, 2012, 23:59 GMT)

Well when it comes to chennai pitch, teams should well balanced, good batting order as well as balanced spin cum pace attack, earlier it was a batsmans paradise, now the pitch gone immensely slower, being a chennaite i follow all the matches in this IPL and any team batting 1st scores 155+, it would be a big chase for the team bats second...if a team goes for glory thinking abt 180+ they would end up with 130...batting first in this particular pitch is wiser...pressure match and avoid chasing...CSK always kings @ their backyard, so delhi be wise and dont go for batting line up... get few spinners and build the innings carefully... but i think CSK have more chance.....

Posted by   on (May 24, 2012, 22:45 GMT)

With Fleming v Taylor I want both teams to win but with Dhoni v Shewag I want both teams to lose. This IPL business is just so confusing.

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (May 24, 2012, 22:10 GMT)

Spot on... Mahela is big for a due one, and there's only one do or die match left. If he and Sehwag fires, there is nothing Chennai can do to win the match. THe only problem is Mahela must OPEN

cmon DD thras out CSK!!! athough im a KKR fan i dnt wanna c CSK in finals again n again!!

Posted by   on (May 24, 2012, 21:30 GMT)

Chand could be considered instead of Venugopal Rao in which case Chand could open pushing Sehwag to 4 and Jayawardene to 5 to take care of the spinners. Warner, Chand, Taylor, Sehwag, Jayawardene, Ojha, Irfan, Negi, Morne, Umesh, Aaron would be strong lineup. Sehwag would be effective against the spinners and older ball. Chand seems to be good opening prospect. Sehwag coming down the order could also surprise Dhoni's plans.

Posted by Alexk400 on (May 24, 2012, 20:59 GMT)

DD always have long Tail. Even with jayawardene and Taylor , they are not managing resources mainly because they could n't find a decent indian player to plug in the holes. Nagar , Chand , Pathan all are 20 run 100 strike rate players in their best of form. in T20 you need 120-150 strike rate players at minimum. Also lack of all rounder in DD is giving a imbalanced look to Delhi team. It is always sehwag and warner to fire or pieterson to fire. Jaywardene won one game. For me delhi needs to ship out irrfan pathan ,chand , nagar out of delhi. Agarkar is dead all rounder. I would play agarkar over irfan pathan any day. But knowing sehwag he will stick with his players and lose than win at any cost captain. Captain job is a business concept. You do something for me i do something for you. S That said i think in T20 is all rounder game. All rounder mostly an athlete. Athlete has more energy resources because they maximize output at pressure situation . CSK players are athletes.

Posted by Alexk400 on (May 24, 2012, 20:47 GMT)

I keep hearing pathan up the order. I have never seen him fire in T20. He is worst all rounder in the history of game. his brother is 100 times better and have the quality. I would throw pathan out of my team any day. He never learn. he never improves. He is satisfied with his pathetic level. That is really astonishing that people believe in a guy who has no confidence in himself. he needs to show he can Bat better or bowl better. For me pathan has mental problem than physical problem.

Posted by Alexk400 on (May 24, 2012, 20:44 GMT)

if DD gona win Tomorrow. Warner and Jayawardene must open. This will give wicketless solid start for DD and Ojha and sehwag can do fireworks at later stage. Strategy is the key for Delhi to win. Ross Taylor and Sehwag in final overs? Fireworks in everest proportion. Key is can sehwag let go off opening spot for team's cause? That is the question. I will let ojha and warner open for if opposition do not have malinga or steyn or hilfenhaus quality. I believe in different stratgey against different teams. Not same policy for all team never gona work in short format. It is about match up. if DD bat and jayawardene and warner opens , Delhi wins.

Posted by StevieS on (May 24, 2012, 20:36 GMT)

Yep Taylor at 3 and tell him to just play his own game, if he comes off you will win if he fails not much will change.

ONE down TWO to go, make it THREE in a row. Go CSK go...............

Posted by   on (May 24, 2012, 20:14 GMT)

DD must make mahela open the innings and promote ross to no.4. There's no point in including both yadav and aaron as both of them are identical in bowling, and both of them have been expensive in their last couple of matches. Better go with yadav and gamble a bit by dropping warner for van der merwe. Just because they have Morkel, doesn't mean that their bowling is quite strong and can restrict the opposition to under 150.

Yes Dehli when ross scores 50 in 21 balls then send him at #8 instead of #3 because he won a match for you and you don't want to win. Disgusting game plan; worse than Misbah ul haq plan against england earlier this year.

Best of luck to Dehli in hot chennai and i don't want channai to win because three in a row will be too much in 5 years. Dhoni let it go man. Let others play and win too.

Very tough test for Delhi tomorrow. They are challenging RCB for the IPL's 'Chokers' tag. Delhi should consider switching van der Merwe for Taylor on the turning Chepauk surface, and bringing in Nadeem for Aaron. It isn't ideal to tinker with team composition at this stage, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Posted by Alexk400 on (May 24, 2012, 18:33 GMT)

Problem is sehwag. He never fired when india needed him. He is going sachin way. He needs to play for a team's cause in playoffs and finals. He should play no.4 to avoid being bunny of hilfenhaus. Delhi win depends on Warner than sehwag. because sehwag never thinks about team cause same like sachin. Sehwag only goal is 4s and Sixers and entertain crowd all time and getting out in 10 ball is not entertaining. He needs to let others play. A good captain make other players excel because he provide good environment for growth. BSehwag being Not out gives team great boost. So i believe he is ideal number 4 now.

Posted by santhedon on (May 24, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

Promote Taylor at No.3, Jayawardene at No.4, Taylor will play the role of KP. All teams need to put their best players at top order in big matches, they wasted Taylor by promoting Venu in qualifier. Later they found it to be disaster.

Whatever their form going into the playoffs, no side plays the crunch games better than Chennai Super Kings ... CSK! i HOPE BEST TEAM WILL HOLD THE CUP ON IPL5

Posted by Nampally on (May 24, 2012, 18:20 GMT)

While DD's bowling is all pace, CSK has a more balanced bowling. Hillfenhaus is likely to the main threat to Warner & Sehwag.Delhi need to exploit the batting of Taylor by sending him up the order. At #7, he has little or no chance to show his batting.Perhaps he was put lower down due to his first game after Flu.DD need to push Irfan Pathan also up the order - definitely not after Negi. If DD are serious about winning they need to play as a team. Sehwag & Warner need to stay at the crease for at least 12 overs & get over 100 on the board.Their cavaliar attitude has hurt the team. Also DD need to include an all rounder in place of either Aaron or Yadev - since they already have 4 seam bowlers & KP is not in the side. CSK always plays as a team. This is a determined side & will fight at home to win.Dhoni, Hussey, Raina, Morkel & Bravo are determined players & will score at high S/R.Jadeja & Ashwin are capable all rounders. Unless put up 200, they will find it tough to win.

Posted by   on (May 24, 2012, 16:55 GMT)

It all depends on team selection and how they execute their game plane. If they tamper with their batting order, then they have themselves to blame. They performed the best this season since inception of IPL but if fall at the final hurdle then they have themselves to blame. It is a pressure situation, will Viru stay calm and show he can perform as a leader on big stage?
