Manvinder Bisla goes on the attack, Kolkata Knight Riders v Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2012, final, Chennai, May 27, 2012
Manvinder Bisla who? Not a question that will be asked too frequently from now © Associated Press

Smart stats

  • The chase of 190 is the highest successful run-chase in IPL history against Chennai Super Kings. The previous highest had been 188, by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009, and Kings XI Punjab in 2011.
  • Manvinder Bisla's 89 off 48 balls is the second-highest score by a batsman in an IPL final, next only to Murali Vijay's 52-ball 95 in the 2011 final.
  • Before this final, Bisla had scored 414 runs in 21 IPL innings at 19.71 and a strike rate of 109.23. For Knight Riders, he had scored 196 in 11 innings at a strike rate of 97.51.
  • In four IPL finals, the opening partnerships for Super Kings read: 39, 44, 159, 87. The opening stands for other sides in IPL finals have been 19, 0, 20, 1, 1, 3.
  • The partnership of 136 between Bisla and Jacques Kallis is the second-highest in an IPL final, after the 159-run opening-wicket stand between Michael Hussey and Vijay in the 2011 final.

There was a galaxy of former Indian cricketers in attendance, the brightest lights from Bollywood were in the stands, both teams had some of the biggest stars in the world game but the headlining performance came from little-known Manvinder Bisla as Kolkata Knight Riders prised the IPL trophy out of Chennai Super Kings' hands. Bisla, who was without a Ranji Trophy side last season, made a mockery of his previous career Twenty20 strike-rate of 106 to play a jack-in-the-box innings that helped overhaul what had seemed a mountainous Super Kings total.

The title looked headed Super Kings' way for the third year in a row, when for the third match in a row a seemingly out of form Super Kings batsman played a blinder - this time it was Suresh Raina - and the rock of Knight Riders' batting Gautam Gambhir was bowled in the first over.

All that changed when Bisla intervened. Virtually every ball he faced, he either jumped beyond leg to make room or danced down the track to get close to the pitch of the ball as he unleashed a series of lofted extra cover drives to dent Super Kings. The first signs of trouble for the defending champions was when Bisla crashed Albie Morkel for four off-side fours in the fourth over to kickstart Knight Riders's innings.

The experienced Jacques Kallis stroked the singles to allow Bisla most of the strike, and Bisla, getting a game ahead of the regular wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum, showed no signs of the pressure of a big occasion getting to him. A slower one from Dwayne Bravo was dispatched for six in the next over, and R Ashwin, who has played a leading role in Super Kings' successes over the past three seasons, was hit over his head for a couple of classy sixes. After half an hour of Bisla's pyrotechnics, Knight Riders were the team in charge and even the usually unfazed MS Dhoni was giving a heated lecture to his team during the time-out.

A century seemed for the taking for Bisla, but he was undone by Morkel's slower one, holing out to point for 89. Kallis then switched from watchful to wallop. The decision to promote Laxmi Shukla to No. 4 failed, but Kallis played one of the shots of the match, a perfectly placed lofted drive that bisected extra cover and long-off for four. That was followed by a heart-in-the-mouth moment as Kallis swung the ball towards deep midwicket where Michael Hussey held on to a tough catch but couldn't prevent himself from going over the rope.

Yusuf Pathan's horrendous 2012 season then came to a fitting end as he top-edged a sweep to be dismissed for 1. Ben Hilfenhaus, who took out Gambhir early and bowled a probing spell with the new ball, returned for his final over in the 19th and he injected more excitement into the game by getting a cramping Kallis to slice a catch to sweeper cover. Hilfenhaus undid that by bowling a full toss that was no-balled for height and following up with another full toss that was nervelessly scooped for four by Shakib Al Hasan.

The tournament entered its final over with Knight Riders needing nine. There were just two singles off the first two balls, including some panicky running, but Manoj Tiwary ended the five-season wait for a trophy with two boundaries behind square leg to spark scenes of wild celebrations.

It was the Chennai crowd that was celebrating for the first half of the game. M Vijay and Michael Hussey left people wondering whether Knight Riders had made a miscalculation by bringing in an ineffective Brett Lee for the final. Vijay and Hussey added 87 in the first half of the innings, raising visions of their 159-run opening stand that destroyed Royal Challengers Bangalore in last season's final.

Then Raina took over, playing his best innings of the season. Weak against the short ball? Raina's first boundary was a powerfully pulled six over midwicket off Kallis. The mystery of Sunil Narine? Raina slog-swept into the stands and later deposited the ball near the sightscreen as Narine was handed his most expensive figures of the tournament.

Despite the pounding from Super Kings, Knight Riders didn't fade in the field like Delhi Daredevils had two days ago. Their first breakthrough came courtesy an outstanding catch from Shakib in the deep, and there were plenty of dives in the outfield to prevent extra runs. The same never-say-die spirit carried them when they came out to bat as well.

Knight Riders showed why they had lost only two of their previous 12 matches, and also that they could win even if their star performers Gambhir and Narine had off days. In the reams of articles in the build-up to the final, there had been plenty written about those two, but virtually no one spoke about Bisla. "Manvinder Bisla who?" is not likely to be a question asked too often after this game, particularly in Kolkata, as a title finally arrived after five drama-filled seasons.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s PP Last 5 overs NB/Wides
Chennai Super Kings 37 13 8 54-0 44-2 2/2
Kolkata Knight Riders 35 18 6 56-1 40-3 1/6

@praveen4honestremark: how many years India is playing cricket????

Posted by Abaa on (May 30, 2012, 4:33 GMT)

@ bcric12 - Shakib better than Yuvi? On which planet? Yuvraj was the Man of the Series in the WC 2011 after his consistent performances throughout a multi-team tournament which ended with India winning the most prestigious trophy there is in International Cricket. And Shakib is better than him? Yeah right ... Keep dreaming. Yes Asia Cup blah blah blah ... Yes WC 2007 blah blah blah ... A victory every 5 years yup you totally own us every time! Shakib cannot be even compared with Yuvraj for God's sake I mean seriously stop embarrassing yourselves guys

@ iftekhar_bd ...Hang on Hang on, let me answer you. In cricket low scores happen but we Indian Cricket team are 2 time ODI world cup winners. 1 T20 world cup winner. So as IndiaRulesEverybody said we truly are champions. Answer this, " How many times your team won ODI world cup"?? Don't cry so much dear, i can't see you weep so much.

@r0ketman - "morkel played for DD you would not have been on this board making absurd statements"... are you a kid???.... before the finals there was a hype over Nariane and we took them to the cleaners..... and choked Gumbir.....It was their luck that KKR escaped the full wrath of the lion because CSK was playing 3 games in 5 days (they are humans too..... and have you been to Chennai during May??? no excuses and loss is a loss)

Posted by Provost on (May 30, 2012, 1:15 GMT)

@r0ketman - That is called fluke (bisla unless he does it again... at least once more)

Fast_Track_Bully...How many times kallis was man of the matches in this tournament ?Although he is all time best all rounder in test and ODI but he is not good in T20 for his slow batting, this is the reality. He did well in this tournament but he was too slow.I do not like to compare with shakib because Kallis is all time best cricketer.Currently Shakib is the best allrounder of world over last two years but Bangladeshi people are are not happy because Indian supporters are criticize him.Nothing else

@IndiaRulesEverybody,y u guys forgot.....ur record lowest total of 54 runs against Srilanka on a batting track (Srilanka's score-299 runs) like Sharjah, which was d largest defeat by runs for seven (7) yrs......

Ok Now the ipl has ended,This is for all who say CSK is lucky and not one of the best,Look back over the 5 seasons,Csk has the highest winning percentage, lone team to enter all the play offs, lone team to enter 4 finals,2 time ipl champions,1 time champions league champs, highest score by a team:246,has the most powerfull batting line up and the most entertaining team in ipl with close finishes(CSK :the entertainers, this season would have been csk's if bollinger would have been in form,Csk play as a team every time, look at KKR:without narine and gambhir, they wouldnt have done this.

The above mentioned info are all true to the best of my knowledge, its hard for all the other team fans, but its true,CSKku whistle podu

@IndiaRulesEverybody, y u guys forgot dat..India got allout by 54 run on a batting track (Srilanka bat first n scored 299) like sharjah against Srilanka. dat was the largest defeat (by 245 run) 4 seven yrs...

Posted by applethief on (May 29, 2012, 14:54 GMT)

@AkDoN @Satyam Kumar We're talking of one player here, not a team, so expectations to win titles are just foolhardy. And let's not forget Yuvraj's finest performance in WC 2011 (not 2012, as you seem to think) - his first-ball duck to Wahab Riaz. And the less said about the Pathans the better - or did you guys not see their "performances" in this year's IPL?

Posted by Provost on (May 29, 2012, 13:58 GMT)

Being lucky in Cricket is OK. How else you explain Bombay in the third slot..... (strange that bombay got there....). Even RCB would have put a better show in playoffs.

Posted by InUrFaceLoosers on (May 29, 2012, 13:50 GMT)

RCB Perennial Chokers-Fit only for individual awards. EOF. Premature celebrations after beating DD and have the worst bowling line up ever. Failing to make use of Muralitharan the great and still making fun of CSK's achievement.

CSK Lions- We won IPL4 RIGHT after India Won the World CUP.Only CSK Fans will know the joy of this sweetest victory.

Cricinfo Please publish this as being a CSKian, I have the right to defend its honor.Hope you publish this.

funny to see BDis praising Shakib for KKR win! lol. He never made a contribution like Kallis did! funny :D

Posted by bcric12 on (May 29, 2012, 11:15 GMT)

@AkDoN: if pathan, yuvi and kallis were in the same level (according to you ) then shakib is far better than them. because pathan is an ordinary player .but i think kallis is the best so far and shakib is better than pathan and yuvi.

Posted by IndiaRulesEverybody on (May 29, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

@ Ami Az Ochena -- Dude Yuvraj Singh won India the World Cup -- What has Shaking Al Hassan won for anybody? Your team collapsed to 58 in your own home ground against West Indies -- Where was this guy when that happened? Pathetic.

I am feeling excited to watch Bisla again play good knocks and come into Indian ODI team soon as opening batsman and also as Bisla is keeper he can help Dhoni at times if Dhoni feels overloaded with work; and moreover Bisla is looking like a real team player, even if he don't keep wickets it's ok..just as opener he is perfect for opening, should be selected for T20 starting in Srilanka. Gambhir should be replaced with Bisla .Bisla as a opener i feel can replace Gambhir quite easily. I am not saying based on this single performance. I am just saying looking at Bisla attitude and Character which is far good than Gambhir and Sehwag... Hope selection committee is looking this message and sack Gambhir to replace with Bisla, believe me it's best choice and not risk.Selection committee select Bisla. Dhoni, please push Bisla for selection ahead of Gambhir in T20 world cup.Gambhir is arrogant too. And also try a replacement for Sehwag soon, Sehwag's attitude is costing team a lot..KKR was Lucky

Posted by arpanc on (May 29, 2012, 5:48 GMT)

multiple teams compete to play CSK in the final! Which team has played all the eliminator matches and eventually reached final? No, it's not CSK. Then who? I am still trying to figure out. What a puzzle!

Posted by r0ketman on (May 29, 2012, 4:43 GMT)

@provost: I am not an Indian, but I am a kkr fan from BD. CSK lost 7 times during this season, including to the lowest team on the ipl totem pole (Pune warriors). CSK is no where near invincible, and the fact that you are asking Bisla who? tells you how bad csk really played. At no point they were in the game as (bisla who?) kept the run rate over asking rate pretty much for the major part of the chase. CSK was lucky to be in the final, because if morkel played for DD you would not have been on this board making absurd statements. Anyways, these statements do not count, KKR won the IPL 2012, that's what the history book will say, it will not say "by sheer luck" in parenthesis. KKR has proved they were the best team this ipl, by beating DD handily with Morkel in the lineup.

One word about KKR win - Lucky

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (May 28, 2012, 21:22 GMT)

Bisla can be the wicket keeper for our team in all formats. Gambhir can be the captain in all formats. Dhoni should fight for a place in the team based on merit and I don't think he deserves a spot in our tests and ODIs on merit. May be he deserves a place in the squad of 16 for t20s.

Posted by i_amVIVA on (May 28, 2012, 20:34 GMT)

It's simple Mr. Bruisers, it means Cricket in BD rocks... so does Shakib in BD... and ICC cound Shakib rocks as alrounder... and he proves time and again... and these are the facts, whether anyone take it or not..... Go Tiger

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 20:19 GMT)

@Provost still you guys are saying something like this..sheer fustration and making a mockery of all other CSK fans.if anybody is lucky thats CSK in reaching finals.Hope srinivasan is well

Posted by Nampally on (May 28, 2012, 19:39 GMT)

Congrats to KKR on chasing 190 runs. Kallis & Bisla deserve all the credit for making this possible thruè their finne innings. It was a great Final and it was great to see the batsmen expected to do well did perform except for Gambhir. Chennai lost the game because of their bowling was off the target & fielding lacked the same intensity as the prvevious match against DD. Ashwin & Bravo bowled below expectation. Bisla should have been caught at short third man well before he got his 50. That was the first match turner. The second one was the no ball out against Hillfenhaus. Either could have turned the KKR win into defeat. Also KKR bowled very well in the last 2 overs to save possible 20 runs whilst Bravo gave 2 fours to Tiwary by poor length & direction in the 3rd & 4th balls of the 20 the over.It came down to who bowled well under pressure in the 20th over that mattered. Shakibs last over was opposite of Bravos. That was the difference between the 2 teams in the final analysis.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 19:11 GMT)

At the end of the day cricket is a team sport and everyone in team KKR contributed well. In few occasions performance of a single individual had been the highlight of wins and in few matches two or three boys were responsible to hand you wins. At times team did not do well at one side of the break but could pull the socks well enough to repair the damage on the other. All shone like star - Gambhir, Narine,Tiwary, Balaji, Bisla, Kallis, McCullum, Shakib, Yusuf Pathan, Bhatia, Shukla, Lee. And we all witnessed how KKR won the crucially crunch final when the very best Gambhir had no contribution with the bat and the magical Narine had his worst day in IPL. Along with seven-ball 11 and the stunning catch in the deep, Shakib did well in the most tensed last over of CSK's innings conceding only 8 runs when explosive Raina and Dhoni were in the middle. Finally Tiwary and Shakib well wrote the last line of IPL-V. By the way, my MoM is Kallis as is Bisla and I am a Bangladeshi.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 19:05 GMT)

CSK players did not win a single individual awards... Not even one.. that defines their campain in this series. very oridanry in leage stage and its bcz up sehwags blunder to keep morkel in the bench cost them the match, I am happy for RCB, atleast they won 2 indivial awards. Gayle and ABD. Murali vijay you can sleep well at home now till next IPL. Dhoni better concentrate on your batting and score some tests. ELse you will be kicked out of team soon.. Bisla can replace you in both test and ODI as a keeper

Posted by Provost on (May 28, 2012, 18:57 GMT)

KKR won by sheer luck. Naraine failed, Gambir choaked (as usual) and some Bisla who? got the runs.

This Bisla kids need to prove again (and wish he does it again and hopefully for team india)

Sewag and Tendulker gave up even before the first ball of their innings.

CSK fans- Don't worry, this is a one time blip in the radar and no need to take KKR seriously.

IPL is a tournament where multiple teams compete to face CSK in the finals...... (Sounds rude but that is the fact and will be)

Posted by Lahori_Munde on (May 28, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

Shakib, Shakib.. Hilarious to read cooments from Shakib followers. It seem Shakib single handedly defeated CSK. Bisla who? Kallis who? Manoj Tiwari who? I's Shakib and Shakib only for that 11 centuries he made in the final. Spare a thought for Hilfenhaus for that noball, or the Shakib would have gone for 5 runs in 5 balls.

Wow .. CSK you beauty ... What a Team .. Proud to be a CSK fan .. No team is a match for us.. Everyone was talking of LUCK and said CSK dont deserve to be in playoffs but check out guys.. We gave MI and DD run for their money... After all its tough to play 3 games in 5days and that fatigue was seen yesterday from CSK's fielding and bowling... Love you CSK ... Best team that brings out best in Crunch games.. !!! CSK for life !!!! Whistle podu .. Love ya ..

Cmn BD fan, see the comment of GG:

At the post-match press conference, Gambhir said the late cameos from Manoj Tiwary and Shakib Al Hasan played a critical role. "It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish. Those cameos from Manoj and Shakib won the game for us."

So whatsup if somebody don't accept Shakibs performance duty the narrow mind?

Think about, when KKR was loosing 2 matches straight, then they take Shakib and won. Cricinfo have a vote on which player should have been played more mathces than they had. Here Shakib got about 50% vote then Tamin about 30%. So, thats all for critics.

After all, to get honored you have to honor others.

Kolkata thoroughly deserved to win. They chased a mammoth score in spectacular fashion and at one stage their target looked like a walk in the park. However full marks for Chennai for fighting to the end and they came back in spectacular fashion.Bisla played one of the finest innings in an I.PL.final.Kolkata held their nerves at the death end which was the crucial factor.Overall the game was victory for I.P.L.cricket.It continued the trend of the hardest fought contests ever which took place in the 2012 edition of I.P.L.

Posted by arpanc on (May 28, 2012, 16:15 GMT)

@Haleos - My only point is that MSD is not a potent captain for test side, if recent performance counts. Let him reign with his authority in ODI and T20 formats, as long he can keep on delivering. Don't mix Test cricket with other formats, they are way apart as far skill and temperament are concirned.

While selecting teams for furture tours if they omit players like Jadeja, it's good for Indian Cricket. We cannot have a player who can only do fielding......(though is not that great fielder when compared to other players in world cricket.) Please stop calling Jadeja as ALL ROUNDER. If he is an all rounder, it's real shame for REAL ALL ROUNDERS in the world cricket.

I thought the match was between KKR and CSK, but it seems that the match was between Shakib and CSK and in the end Shakib won.

Congrats to KKR and a special congrats To Shakib Al Hassan for making our Country proud! Also Congrats to each and every member of KKR, morely G. Gumbhir who really played well and guided KKR wonderfully. Bisla, J. Kallis every one played well except Y. Pathan KKR expected more for him but he played like a primary school boys? Anyways, maybe next time?

Posted by arpanc on (May 28, 2012, 15:58 GMT)

@sivan1980, I am fully aware of what you mentioned and think that incident was fully exaggerated in the media (which is quite natural). Now if you are pinpointing that being the sole reason of India's lackluster demise in test arena then only one thing I can say that the captain has no control over his team. Moreover that episode had happened in ODI series and much before that India received heavy poundings at the hands of England and Aussies in Tests. So if performance alone matters, Dhoni does not deserve to be the test captain any longer neither he seems to be having any interest left for test cricket. Facts first mate, before you create your own world theory!

Posted by Bruisers on (May 28, 2012, 15:38 GMT)

I don't understand why on earth there is so much hype on Shakib. Some fans celebrate every run of Shakib like a century. And to some fans KKR is a Bangladeshi team due to Shakib.. Wonder what would have happened, if Shakib had scored those 89 instead of Bisla. Not saying that he can, but just imagine the sheer number of Shakib-admiration-comments here!!

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 15:09 GMT)

Great final !! Excellent innings from Bisla !! Both the all-rounders Kallis and Shakib made important contributions with both ball & bat. This wicket probably wouldn't have suited Brendon McCullum - probably more edges/misses than connects ...

Funny though how people react....If Ind team plays and wins against any other team....people will praise and worship DHoni as God and lady luck is with and so on and they Bash other teams as mediocre and a good for nothing team.....but if Dhoni wins matches for CSK its pure luck he is a good for nothing capatain and now some people wants him to be axed as captain and make Gambhir as captain..lol...where were you guys when Ind was losing to Aus and Eng on a trot.....where were you when Ind lost to BD in Asia cup...wat a joke....

What a cracker of a match it was we are so proud of you CSK team for putting a great fight, a worthy and a fitting finale both equally balanced and good teams contested and fought hard. I salute you KKR, I would also like to let all of the CSK haters and others that we the people from chennai have a history that we always appreciate good cricket no matter if its a Pakistan team win against India or KKR win against CSK we salute and appreciate the team who plays good cricket, you can hear that from the commentators itself about the chennai crowd. Our cSK team is the most consistent team in IPL history we love our team more than anything else, we get a little hurt when our team lose the match but no matter what happens we chennaities support our team from the bottom of our heart...we are so proud that we are CSK fans, our team are full of fighters with a dont give up atttitude thats y we are succesful in each IPL

Congrats to KKR ,i was rooting for anyone but CSK to win and KKR deserved to win .Im fed up of N Srinivasan and Srikkanth filling the Indian team with CSK players .I hope Vijay dosent get a chance over Rahane again with all his failures ,Jadeja is either not utilized properly by Dhoni or dosent deserve chance in the side .Saha shoukd not be in side . T20 side for WC -- Sehwag ,Gambhir ,Kohli,Rohit,Yuvraj,Raina,Dhoni,Irfan,Ashwin,Parvinder Awan,Vinay Kumar ,Umesh Yadav If Yuvraj is fit will have to drop Vinay from playing eleven . Reserves ---Rahane ,Rayadu ,Harbhajan ,Munaf Patel .

Glad that KKR won the title. More glad because it has n't been won by teams riding high on luck (CSK & MI). It was unfortunate that these teams made it to play-offs. A more fitting end would have been a final between DD and KKR.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 13:24 GMT)

Off course KKR win with passion and the team build by coaching staff. However, CSK comes towards the finals with great fixing surely. 1. Why MI won the toss and elected to field also they know the result of DD and KKR match. 2. Why DD won the toss and elected to field first. They already lost against KKR while chasing.

Hi AkDoN,Yuvraj achieved 9 wickets in his test career in 37 matches and 109 wickets in 274 odi matches.Test bowling avg is 55.66 and odi bowing avg his 37.24.How gonna he be a all rounder when he is a occasional bowler. Yuvraj vs Shakib- Yuvraj in Tests 37 matches 1775 runs and 34.80 avg. shakib in tests 26 matches 1630 runs and 34.68 avg. Yuvraj in ODIs 274 matches 8051 runs and 37.62 avg shakib in ODIs 126 matches 3635runs and 35.63 avg.

Bowing Shakib vs Yuvraj-

No mention from Gambhir at all of Kallis in the final ... 69 off 49 and more importantly a cool, calm head!

What a match...Great job KKR.....Brilliant performances by Bisla and Kallis. CSK also did well. I think it is time to groom/give chances/more chances to few domestic players who did pretty well in this IPL. 1. Rahane 2. Bisla 3. Awana 4. Mandeep Singh 5.Dinda 6.Umesh Yadav 7.Manoj Tiwary 8. Balaji. Few players like Rohit Sharma/Suresh Raina/Jadeja/Vinay Kumar should never be selected for away tours specially SAF/ENG/AUS/NZL. They can play only in Indian pitches.

it proves fatal wen u persist wit same 11.. they play good but for how much time is everbody s qn.. y not giv yomahesh, mukund, tyagi sum chances to get good.. doesnt seem right tat jakati n jadeja given so many chances but stil not doing great.. jadeja except for 1 match dint do anythi good for his team.. nd albie being wasted for last 3 yrs in think.. hope csk has to think a lot to make a team selection before ipl 6. congrats again to csk n MSD for being consistent in all ipls(thanks to sum extraordinary talents, intl players n to sum extent dhoni captaincy).. better watch out ther r other teams waiting for its revenge...

Congrats to kkr on winning ther maiden ipl title n to csk for putting a good show yesterday... good captaincy from gambhir i guess.. To all csk n dhoni fans, MSD s a good captain but not d best of other indian captains.with having so much talented players n seniors in ur team nd MSD has to do is oly captaincy. if sum other captain had dis team i hope india would hav gone far better than now.. no insult meant to dhoni but his tactics of persisting y pathan in indian team, r jadeja for csk doesnt mean anything.. Guys i was a csk fan til ipl 2. but then its d team composition tat has forced me to b neutral.. hope ther s nothi wrong in playing du plessis after his illness was over. not overloading hussey aft coming from wi doesnt prove good. he played well but form du plessis form he would hav done better.. nd pl giv chance to a morkel. its disgusting to see huge talented allrounder being wasted in csk side. persisting wit same 11 can giv u wins but its proves fatal now

Two great all-rounder batted together last night. Mr. Satyam Kumar, if you say that ODI WC and T20 WC winning is the sign of great all-rounder then Kallis, Flintoff, Ian Botham are also not great all-rounders. An allrounder is a player who can co-operates the bowlers and the batsmen to make things going on to their way. a few days later all-rounder may be defined as a IPL winner!!!!!!!!

Posted by muski on (May 28, 2012, 12:54 GMT)

Well Iam not a great fan of SRK and have seen only a handful of his movies. However, the point that he made on TV last night was very motivational. The fact of life is that failures will continue to haunt the best of men and teams. It is when the team or the individual rises above those obstacles with a will to succeed, the mission is accomplised. Now, with the uncapped players also put up for auction next year, its going to be the survival of the fittest which will see some boys growing up to compete with the best of men and some men who have miserbaly failed to live up to their huge billing being thrown into wilderness and sent packing forever.

Posted by Haleos on (May 28, 2012, 12:52 GMT)

@arpanc - so what? He has own many more. Previous captains did not even manage to win any titiles plus added misery of losing one series after another. We lost even to teams like Zimbabwe.

Posted by Haleos on (May 28, 2012, 12:51 GMT)

Ashwin performed marginally better in bowling over Jadega. Jadega was well ahead in case of Batting. Can we safely say Ashwin is highly overrated player. Hope to see someone better in the coming international series.

congrats KKR....its really disappointing for a diehard CSK fan like me.....anyway as long as RCB losses i will be happie.....come on CSK waiting to see u in CLT20....

Posted by Sivan1980 on (May 28, 2012, 12:30 GMT)

@arpanc. The attitude of viru and gauti is played major roll in that 8 matches. They totally split the teams in to two halves. I think u r not reading the news properly. Go back and read the news of those days and the statement made by those flat track pullies( viru, gauti). Viru and gauti want to captain the side regardless of their potential.

Posted by squarepeg on (May 28, 2012, 12:21 GMT)

Why is one match the way to decide who is a better captain? CSK and KKR played twice in the league, each won one match. There is no doubt that CSK is the much better team on paper and it was poor performance of Raina, Vijay and Dhoni that was the reason for their poor league results. CSK is slightly worse in bowling dept. MI and CSK are the consistent teams, both could retain the max 4 players allowed in the 2011 auctions. The problem in India is jumping to conclusion of India team - Bisla, Shukla, Tiwary- based upon one or half a performance in a t20 match!!

Posted by rajuvaze on (May 28, 2012, 12:15 GMT)

Everyone is talking about Bisla, Kallis, Raina, Vijay, Gambhir and Sunil Narine. But I still feel that the 20th over in CSK innings bowled by Shakib made a huge difference. He gave just 8 runs in that over without giving any boundary or six and that too when Dhoni and Raina were in such a solid form. Hats off to Shakib.. Really a wonderful player...

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 12:09 GMT)

Calm down guys. Looking at the comments, majority of comments are related to Shakib. As if he won the whole match on his own. Yes he is good and performed ok in the final. Gave 25 runs in 3 overs and scored 11 runs of 7. Ok performace considering circumstances. There are 10 other members in the team as well. Bisla and Kallis were the main reason why KKR won. These should be the ones we should talking about here

Posted by ShakeelSardar on (May 28, 2012, 12:07 GMT)

@Sivan1980, first of all get your facts correct. Firstly, Gauti did not lead this team for last five years. Secondly, CSR lost to KKR twice this season, who is better captain then? Thirdly, good to see you are only person in this forum praising the current selection policy which loads tons of players who don't know the survival technique when ball is seaming. Lastly, don;t forget batsman Gauti was the chief architect of Indian resurgence in WC final in Wankhede, not so long ago, all Dhoni had to do is to do the finishing job, the foundation however was laid down by somebody else.

MSD is a cool captain, But Not a Great Tactician. It was a surprise to see him having so many boundary riders in the final over when KKR needed just 3 from 3. He should have more men inside the circle to prevent singles. CSK is a great team having great Players and they were consistent in IPL except this season. I back Gambhir's Point that "A Captain is as good as his team" In my view, Steeve Waugh & Hansie Cronje were exceptions. Among Indian Captains, I feel Ganguly was the best in terms of killer instinct and he backs his boys and gets the best out of them. He with John wright transformed the indian team to a fighting unit . Unlike MSD, Ganguly's resourses were limited. KKR has been consistent throughout this season and rightly they deserved to be the winners. "CONGRATS KKR" I Liked the way CSK Played the eliminator and Qualifier. MSD's batting is a treat to watch when he is in his attacking best. But not when he nudges the ball around which more often than not find the fielders.

Is it a coincidence that both the national team and the IPL team Dhoni captains depend greatly on flat tracks and huge pile of runs to win matches on most occasions? He could have easily played another genuine bowler in place of Jadeja.

Posted by Sagarneel on (May 28, 2012, 11:12 GMT)

Now that the circus is over, let's concentrate on some 'real' cricket! As cricket lovers, let's not forget the horrid time India had in the tests against England and Australia, and pray as a country that we regain some cricketing form where it matters the most (not from a financial, but sporting point of view) - tests cricket. As far as yesterday's final was concerned, I think the match was evenly poised till Bill Hilfenhaus bowled that horrid no-ball off which Shakib was caught. That ball produced 3 runs (including the no-ball) and the next ball (which was actually the extra delivery) went for a boundary, technically making it 7 runs from one ball. I am not a nig IPL fan, but it was fun watching last night's game. One more point - after Bayern Munich's loss at the Allianz arena in the Champion's league and now CSK's loss in their own fortress Chepauk, I am doubting if anything called 'home advantage' really exists!!

Poor gauti has to learn lot from dhoni. One IPL winner that even after Five years making more noise. Attitude problem. First learn yourself how to play good cricket in crunch situation. 0% input in crunch situation making more noise. Selectors knows very well about your attitude. There are lot finding in IPLs. First change your attitude and ensure your place in Indian team before u dream for captain. "It proves captain is only as good as his team" This the word of Gauti. Short temper guy. How will he make decision in crunch situation?. The Cool Dhoni proved and performed lot in crunch situation won many titles. In IPL teams not only Indian Captains. Warne, Gilly, Dravid, Dada, Jayawardene, Sanga, Vettori, SA smith, white like all are international captains. Dhoni is the only captain overcome all above in many occasions.

Dhoni gives lots of excuses after defeat shows weakness in his own captaincy. Being cool not means you are great captain you have tobe aggresive sometimes.

Its sad to see more of desperation from anti- CSK supporters rather than supporting their own team. I can see a whole lot of insane people who have made a mockery of comparing Gambhir with the greatest Indian captain. What a joke to compare somebody who has just led a local club to a title with some one who has won 2 world cups for the country, took the country to No1 ranking in tests, besides winning 2 IPL crowns & 1 CL T20. Mind you guys, who are so envious of the great CSK & MSD, no luck can take you to the Semifinals of every edition of IPL & 4 out of 5 times to the finals. So accept the truth & stop cracking those dis interesting jokes about Gambhir as a great captain. CSK & MSD always rock. Great going CSK & MSD, you are the best in India.

I knw some of BD fans claims that Shakib is better than anyone but I wont say that. He is a talent and he will be something very big and already he is big with the ranking. bt the way indn ppl try to put Shakib down is not logical. if u dont like a bd player doin good thats a different story. Just look at the profile of the KKR players for this season he played only 7 games he was MOM in two. He got 11 wckts. Only Narine did better than him with ball. I knw that he didnt bat well but still he made KKR win two matches. you can disrespect his crazy fans if they talk stupid bt u cant say bad things about him. Be logical guys .. I am not saying he is the best but give him the praise he deserve. I personally dont support Indian team because of the comments of Indians towards BD team bt I respect good performer Like Shachin, Dhoni, Virat, Irfan, gambhir. Praising others doesnt make u down .. trust me! think about half of the Banladeshi ppl who supports Indian team, P.S. I LOVE SHAKIB :)

From an English supporter thought the IPL was excellent. Didn't watch loads of matches but I'm glad KKR won as they seemed to carefully think about their plans and team make up. Absolute masterstroke to sign up Narine (who I, along with many others I guess asking who is he?) whereas CSK were haggling millions over Jadeja...MSD is a master though and DD and MI seemed a bit one dimensional. Glad a young Indian was MoM...with an excellent turn from the always superb Kallis. Well done Gambhir and team...

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 9:01 GMT)

Now will balance shift in Indian Cricket from Chennai to Kolkata....the fans have had enough of Dhoni/ Raina/Jadeja......Gautam Gambhir should be made test captain with immediate effect....non performing players like Raina and Jadeja should be replaced with Manoj Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane !!

Posted by sankarantpr on (May 28, 2012, 8:40 GMT)

Chetan Sharma was sent one down in the Nehru CUP by Srikkanth and he scored a brilliant century. In the press meet he said it is a master stroke since he scored a century and a blunder if he failed. Likewise we can treat the selection of Bisla it was a compulsive selection. It clicked. Poor Sehwag his selection in the qualifier went wrong. It is not his fault. It is destiny. We can appreciate the good work who ever perform suddenly though they may not be consistent . Bisla played few games only but in the final he performed. Let us appreciate his effort. But on who perform consistently over a period of time should be taken in to account Nothing against Bisla but it is a fact

CSK is and will be the consistent team ever in IPL history definitely....and all the congratulations to KKR for chasing down a huge total and making the finals intresting..and all CSK supporters need not feel bcoz CSK again proved how dangerous they can be for opposition team but KKR luckily got away with it.......KKR definitely will be ruled out of CLT20 2012.

Tough luck CSK.......and great finish by KKR at the end..it was a worthfull match for finals..and another close match....but has to say one thing to few people who commmented above....semifinals and finals of IPL will be held at venue who won the previous edition IPL, so stop commenting about venues and follow IPL properly..next year 1st match of IPL is between CSK & KKR at KOLKATA and finals will be also at Kolkata ....last year also the finals should be at Chennai but due to the elections there police are unable to provide security, so it is held at Mumbai.... Few people are also commenting DHONI, it was bisla who made it for KKR not Gambhir in finals..looking at national side Gambhir is tremendous but he is the one who make comments when he is on upper hand.... Saying truly definitely CSK has luck coming to playoffs but not after, and you can bet on CSK anytime in any IPL edition which qualifies for playoffs and once they are in playoffs they are in finals definitely....

Posted by mjrvasu on (May 28, 2012, 8:25 GMT)

KKR won it not because of Gambhir's captaincy, but his frontline batting, and tremendous support cast who showed the flair. But having Gambhir gone, over # 4 was a great chance for a spinner (Jakati) to get in quickly. With close in fielders surrounding Bisla, he could not have stepped out to drive and loft. Dhoni definitely missed a trick here. Morkel is always known to provide width and full balls to the batsmen, so continuing him for 4th over really cost the match. And somehow spinners did not have the confidence to try to trap the batsman stumped by clever turners outside leg stump.

After posting 190, not giving wickets to Narine, and getting Gautam early, not much else was needed to wrap up the match. This is not to say Dhoni is not a smart leader, but he missed it this time. It is also possible that playing every other day some tough knock out games have sapped the energy from the team, since practically same 11 has played last several games in high humidity.

i think balaji's injury was a blessing in disguise which forced changes keeping mcullum out. dont think mcullum cud've scored at the same rate bisla did. he has struggled to score quickly on these pitches.

Dhoni won everybody's heart by his captaincy. we all love him here in Bangladesh. our captain Sakib was on KKR. you cant imagine how proud we are of Sakib playing in the IPL. he playing in the final and taking a huge responsibility of the faith on him by the KKR made us so nervous out here you cant imagine. it added when he bowl the last over and when he was there to take KKR home. thanks god we haven't had heart attack. he is not like pollerd or peterson or hassy but he made us proud to take KKR cross the finishing line.

One should believe in destiny. KKR is destined to lift the IPL Cup. Otherwise those runouts and catches would have happened. Sahib out for a waist high full toss, Hilfenhaus dropped Bisla at his score 40 of the bowling of Ashwin is crucial. The other day mishit of vijay caught by Taylor turned out to be six but in this match it turned out to be a catch. So destiny. Well played CSK. Well done KKR and congratulations

Posted by Sivan1980 on (May 28, 2012, 7:54 GMT)

@Praveen4, U exactly right. Dhoni is good leader than anyone else. The consistent performers Narine, Gauti didnt play well in the Final. Bisla, the man who was away from most of the matches played well on his day. This is what all about t20. The captain decision and strategy play 50% and players individual performance play 50% i.e players has to deliver what captain needs for that particular move. In this IPL final Gauti strategy went 0% and individual performer 50% of bisla earn the game for KKR. So good team cannot make good captain. DD is good team than anyother team but didnt make good captain. Whats the answer from Gauti? So Team has to deliver what captain needs i.e team needs. The strategy and decision remains with captain. This IPL final CSK bowlers bowled few wide balls and after it went for sixes and fours that cost the match. This is not dhoni mistake, its upto the individual. If they bowled right balls and even it went for fours and sixes no issue.

@ Abaa agreed that shakib hasnt done great things in this one but he's done good things. he bowled a good last over, took a great catch to rid of dangerous vijay, and stayed there till the end to guide his team home(that last ball boundary of the 2nd-last over eased up the pressure). not saying he single-handedly won them the match cuz that would be stupid to say. it was a team effort where everyone played their part as did shakib and bisla's contribution was the best.

CSK is the best and Dominate team in IPL and Looking forward for CSK vs Sialkot Stallions in CLT20. Well played KKR.

Congrats to KKR. Dont conclude that Gauti is good leader than Dhoni. One IPL cant decide the factor and it is first time KKR reaching final. Earlier gauti was DD captain two times, for KKR 2 times. And first time KKR entering final and won. In front of dhoni Gauti is Kid. 1 T20 WC, 1 One day WC, 2 IPL, 1CLT20, 2 IPL runners Up. What else u need to lead the team india. Empty vessel make more noise. Thats what happening for Gauti. Really I expected this will happen. This IPL Dhoni did great job as captain in the final. But the bowlers didnt bowl well. especially BRAVO and Morkel. The two consecutive wide balls in one of their over after that two it went for fours and sixes. Any how this is part of t20. As dhoni said few individual performances like Bisla and Kallis took the game. Where is consistent performer Narine, gauti, etc etc. Not delivered when it is matter. Bisla was missed most of the matches. So gauti didnt put faith on him. This is what T20.

@pai11, yes you are right in a way but DD made too many changes. 1. Sehwag kept purple capowner out. 2. They could have retained Nadeem for Sunny. 3. What was V.Rao doing in the past few matches? Unmukt showed great promise. One can still say had Sunny succeeded it would have been called a master stroke but he made his debut in a qualifier. Not at all happy with Sehwag. Though we would be blaming Gabhir had Bisla failed. Thats anyway our mentality as many of us do not accept strategy can fail :)

Terrific final. Well played by both teams. CSK can be proud of their performance. Absolutely worthy finalists and a terrific score of 190/3 in 20 overs. It was a nail biting finish and could've gone either way. Just wasn't CSK's night. CSK is a great team. The bowling is admittedly not as strong as some of the other teams and will need to be fixed. Otherwise, batting and fielding is fantastic. There is no need for 3 all-rounders. Better to get a specialist bowler of world-class ability. Go CSK! On to CLT20

Posted by waheed1233 on (May 28, 2012, 6:54 GMT)

Narine showed he is yet to learn lots more to play at the top-level. Group matches and the final are different games altogether. If KKR could have lost, they would have lost just for poor captaincy by Gambhir. Why on earth would you send Shukla (who has just played one good innings in his whole life) and Yousuf (who cant bat and people have forgotten when he last played a good innings) ahead of Shakib and Manoj?

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 6:53 GMT)

hi abaa,25//1 from shakib in this high scoring match was not good?with that run rate csk could get only 160 runs!take look at other bowlers economy,u will get your ans!ur comment about taking that catch & take raina on pitch-was not it ridiculous?then everybody should not take any chennai wicket,as dhoni, bravo will be in crease!!if u can note manoj, then why not shakib for that scoop?16 was needed from 7,when kallis departed and both shakib & manoj did it easily.be honest man,say good to good, dont disrespect shakib just for being a bangladeshi.in another note, who told that he has done it all alone?!it was a superb team effort from kkr..and shakib contributed by being their 3rd best player after naraine and gautam & being their 3rd best player in final after bisla & kallis..u should admit that!

the chepauk was a belter in the last 2 games and really helped vijay raina bisla to score big who otherwise wouldn't have. hilfy showed yet again that he's no good in pressure situations bowling full tosses every ball like he did against mumbai.jakati the weakest of the lot. CSk's batting helped them play the way they have in the knockouts that too on a belter of a wicket in chepauk. take vijay and raina overseas and watch them get bounced out!!

First off, congrats to my team KKR for their first ever IPL championship. I'm over the moon with this great achievement seeing that this TEAM and no individual won the championship (remember that partisan Bangla fans!). I'm also glad that KKR doesn't listen to any of these partisan Bangla fans otherwise we might have never got Gambhir, Kallis, Bisla, McCullum, Balaji and Narine to play for our team. God bless the KKR club's policy of inclusion based on MERIT based criteria, rather than culture based prejudices. Gambhir's quote at the end of the game was an important reflection of how TEAM based performances rather than individual based performances are recognized on KKR. Rock on KKR!

@ Kavindeven..Shame it makes you laugh when Gambhir is saying it to Dhoni, Indian National Cricket team Captain....it's not a street time min it. Shame on Gambhir part that he never realises his mistakes even now. Can't play swing bowlers. Mean while coming to point , ask any cricket expert they will tell you captain weights about 50% and all players at 50% in a team win. Captain makes a good team, and good team if given he makes if better, if he is great captain like MSD. Shame on you people who laugh at MSD. Don't have morals how to treat a countries captain.

No I am not a KKR supporter, but the arrogance you people showed during the las two matches with your comments......Well What to say.....Just one sentence.."Everyday is not a Sunday" & yes luck can be with you for certain period...Only better performance can win you trophies like this.. Yes Dhoni is nothing but lucky, but alas... it ran out yesterday... Ha ha ha

CSK die hard fan here. I almost cried last night, but when i was feeling for loss, i just paused for a moment and said to myself " being a CSK fan i have to take things positively, that's what our attitude is and my attitude is".Hi KKR supporters congratulations for that great victory. Here is my analysis of the final match: 1) CSK's bowling when attacked showed it's weakness especially the spin department, Jakati and Ashwin could not complement each other in bowling through out tournament and this match too. Jadega was also below average through this IPLT20. 2) Gambhir said this words after he won match " It proves captain is only as good as his team. Team makes successful captain, Successful captain does not make successful team" . The last word" Successful captain doesn't make successful team" has some inner meaning and was pointed towards Dhoni. Gambhir, learn to respect your leader, captain of Indian National Cricket team, MSD. You can't still play short balls and you are FTB .

.....@abba. well if shakib did bowl well then who did ????????he is giving 25 runs and 4 runs are coming from the misfield ????????????yes bisla was the hero of the match but shakib was playing a good roll infact his scoop shot makes it easy for KKR to win the match

It was nice to see KKR won the final beating CSK finally. The reason why people in Bangladesh is fans of KKR is for Shaki- Al-Hasan. When KKR scored winning run, it was joy and happiness as well as , shouting and roaring all over Bangladesh from houses to Streets. Congrats Shahrukh Khan.

Its not the question of luck, luck can't favour some person all the time.. Only a good captain can lead the team and take it forward..

Posted by Thyagu5432 on (May 28, 2012, 6:12 GMT)

190 was a winning total but I think KKR were destined to win today. CSK's fielding has never been this mediocre this whole tournament. Vijay becoming a goal keeper, Jadeja forgot to aim at the stumps, Dhoni dropping Bisla (which could have signalled the end of KKR). And then KKR also had their stroke of luck, catches just eluding the fielders (in fact, one of them just brushed Hilfi's fingers), Kallis's hits in the air just dropping between players. Nevertheless, this was a classic finals, going to the wire and it was clearly a match between two equals. Disappointed that CSK didn't win but it was won by another deserving team just for Gambhir alone. So many classy innings this IPL season. Congrats to KKR! I only wish the owner of the franchisee was somebody else.

To all those people who find happiness in others loss..There can be no team as our CSK which has marched into the semis in all the editions of IPL so far.. Dhoni needn't prove his immaculate captaincy to all those ppl who watched him with their mouths wide opened after he won us the World Cup..Am still a CSK fan..they are true champions..

@Kavindeven. A successful captain makes a succesful cpatain....? Then what is the role of a Captain, other than being known to be sucessful? Ask Dhoni. He may not tell you that or to the media. He is one of smartest, toughest and humble Indian known in Cricket world and that is the way it should be. Exactly opposite to Gambir/Veeru etc. Gambir is passionate (and a good batsman) but passion and skills can only take you so far. Only a cool head can go futher. There is a lot of appreciation for Dhoni in the cricket world outside India (as a captain and being cool and not as a batsman/WK). Other than Kallis's knock, KKR's innings was exciting but was unpredictable. Wheras CSK innings looked stable and looked 'planned/organized', typical of cool heads..., not 'passionate' ones.

Congrats & well chased KKR ! CSK's 190 specially in a final was a good score & surely a defendable one. I think few bowling errors at times cost CSK the title... Dhoni could have tried Jadeja or Raina for a couple of overs to break the rhythm of Bisla-Kallis onslaught, which really changed the complexion of the game !!!!

Yes, as a KKR fan, I agree entirely with Abaa that it is TEAM KKR that won the 5th IPL for them, and NOT one person,- be it Shakib or somebody else! Bisla proves the point, as did the off-colour Yusuf Pathan on his day in the first Semi Final against Delhi Dare Devils. Every person did his bit to put past them the 4 years' wait for KKR for their rightful place under the sun.

In my personal opinion, if at all any individual is to be credited for KKR's Final feat in the 5th IPL, it is KKR's Captain Gautam Gambhir. Oh, how he did lead from the front, galvanizing an otherwise down-and-out KKR of the yester years into a high-voltage and electrifying unit that came into reckoning for all of us there to see! Guru Gautam, hail to the Chief!

And, then, there was the incorrigible 'King Khan' - Shahrukh - always there to pep up KKR's spirits all along the way. TEAM KKR, take a bow. You deserve to the King of the 5th IPL. Hurrah and three cheers for a team that has finally come of age.

Posted by Cric_Tic on (May 28, 2012, 5:37 GMT)

congrats KKR... i rooted for CSK. in the end it was the 6 to 7 wides/no balls which cost them almost 15 extra runs and extra balls. CSK's bowler's indiscipline cost the match. Both team's batting was very good. Fielding up to the mark. KKr did not gv eides/no balls and tht was the crucial factor.

‎"""Its not a successful captain that makes a successful team, but a successful team that makes a successful captain""" LOL Gautam was saying that to Dhoni Not to Ravi Shastri. But well said and well deserved win for Gauti. He is a more passionate captain compared to Captain Cold Dhoni who run out of ideas and only survive on his luck.

Congratulations KKR, you and CSK were the teams that i had supported from the beginning and hey, both you reached the finals so i really couldn't choose who to support. Both my teams fought well in the final but KKR prevailed. Well done. What surprises me is that many of the people are now wishing Gambhir to be captain of Indian team. Like, cmon guys, this one win makes gambhir better than Dhoni? Does gambhir have the power to handle pressure well as Dhoni does? No doubt gambhir is a fine leader but just winning one game does not make him better than Dhoni. Cheers!

Now !!! Let Goutham lead the Indian test side ! Include Bisla or Ambhatti Raidu in the Squad as WK as they are technically much perfect than Dhony to play test cricket !!!

shakib has never gone wicketless in this ipl!he came in after 1st 2 matches(in those matches-kkr lost) and completely changed the scenario.12 wickets from only 8 matches with a great strike rate & economy rate, cool calm finishing in 3 matches, winning 2 mom awards from just 8,being inspiration in all fields in the final-everything is telling highly about his talent and determination...he also got 11 wickets from 7 with a low economy rate in last years ipl..so,kkr..dont underutilize his talent in next ipl..u will again be champions!

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 5:04 GMT)

nothing to worry CSK fans,,,we have won two ipl title already and then two runners up..which team have made it four times to play IPL finals for last five season in IPL history,, its only team CSK have made it..they have good record in IPl league.. just we move forward to champions league this year..lets see on there which ipl team will perform well lets see, CSK or KKR or DD.... we have more disappointed for CSK last yesterday,,but csk did one mistake at last minute..at 19th over that no ball from Ben hilf's and given four at last ball.. that makes KKR very easy to achieve IPL champions this year.. my congrats to every KKR players especially bisla and kallis... even gambir and narine fails to bat and bowl well in finals... being a CSK fan,, i am very happy to see, that they have played excellent in last two qualifier and even in finals whether not in league stages,, they have given good fight back to opposion in final stages. we love u CSK.. all the best for champions league.. :)

Posted by Abaa on (May 28, 2012, 5:01 GMT)

What did Shakib do that more than 80% of comments are regarding him? Did he guide KKR to the play-offs or finals almost single-handedly? Because it was Gambhir and Narine who did that by being the only performers in over 15 games! Did he bowl brilliantly? Nope three overs for 25 at an economy rate of 8.33 is not even good! If his catch changed the match then how would you classify Bisla's brilliance or Kallis's knockout blows which actually sealed the game for KKR with a match winning partnership? Also how was Suresh Raina's entry was an advantage to KKR? He was CSK's top scorer and made 73 off 38 at a SR of 192.10 while Vijay had been batting at a SR of 131.25! The best contributors in today's game for KKR were Bisla and Kallis. The others were ordinary. Maybe Tiwari's 9 off 3 is worth a mention for finishing off the game that was starting to stutter. But Sakib? Seriously? KKR deserved the title and won it. Yet congratulatory messages are more so for Sakib like he won anything at all!

One ball changed the whole match. I thought that was NOT a no-ball. Only because Kallis's wicket was of a full-toss that was referred Billy gave Shakib's wicket no-ball.

Looked at that no-ball few more times. Shakib was in front-foot and was trying to hit it over mid-wicket and was little bit bent while he was hitting the shot. Had he stood still , it wouldn't have looked like over his waist hight.

These things happen in cricket , but surprisingly no commentator picked on it.

A deserving win for KKR. They were the best team after DD in IPL.

Getting rid of Buch really helped the team to sustain a tougher and more serious support staff and that coupled with aggressiveness of Gambhir and never say die attitude, became a well deserved champs.. Great game for CSK and they should be proud of their performance.. Losing to a better team that played great cricket on the day is always satisfying.. Thanks for a good game of cricket..

Congrats to KKR for winning the IPL. As a CSK fan, I feel sorry for my team especially after they scored 190 and still lost. But KKR deserved to be the Champs ,Though we were in Finals Dhoni's Adamant belief on Jakati cost the team in the crucial juncture , It's time for Jakati to go he had never bowled a good over through out this IPL and Dhoni's failure to give the other indian guys a chance in the league level has Cost him , Bravo is not your final over bowler at any time , He should have tried Raina / Jadeja atleast for 1 over during the middle of the innings , Having said that I love CSK and Dhoni a lot and hope they would bring in some real bowlers next time and come hard at the new CHAMPS................

Congrats Gambhir, Kallis, Bisla, Shakib and Manoj too...You did a great job. CSK was failed in many matches and they came to the final mostly because of the luck and wierd arrangements of the organizing map (failed teams like Pune and Chargers should not be given for more matches and there should be a system to drop failed teams early). But KKR was a prospective team from the beginning. Your players were palyed well and we saw a good team work too. you got a good combination for the final...shakib, kallis, bisla, narine...woooow..yes, indeed, shakib is a great prospect but friends never compare him with a legend like Kallis..compare their stats..then you can see what i mean

@ Trakkan: Sehwag messed up with strategy? sounds good to tell that but the reality is different.. some decisions are taken for a match and if it doesn't come good you make a fool of yourself. consider these: Scene 1: Duplessis the orange cap holder was made to sit out when Hussey joined the squad. even though CSK lost that match, ultimately Hussey proved his worth and the decision looked good!!! Scene 2: Mccullum was made to sit out in a final & his replacement did wonders.. so Gambhir is hailed as a great strategist!!! Scene 3: Sehwag is made to look like a fool for sitting Morkel out. But his replacement Russel did contribute well. what was the guarantee that had Morkel played he would have contained CSK batsmen? rememer Morkel failed against CSK in their previous encounter at Chepauk.. and in hindsight if Naraine couldn't pick wickets or contain CSK batsmen, I dont think anyone could...

IPL5 was as exciting as you can get. The BCCI should be congratulated for the wonderful management of the event. The lessons from IPL 5 for Indian Test cricket are the following: 1.Gambhir should replace Dhoni as captain 2.Dinesh Karthick should replace Dhoni as wicket-keeper and 3.Badrinath should be included in the place of Yuvraj Singh or Raina.

The team that won first IPL title reached nowhere near to it in the later seasons. Guys take it easy on Dada. Doni didn't have a glue with bisla (who was untouchable) But shame on Doni to take 31 mins to bowl last two overs.....Shows what he'll do to win. Key at the end was KKR needed 16 of 7 balls and the no ball 3 fast runs by minoj and Shakib. Lol vijay running away with the ball then Shakib done the rest with that scoop 4 which left 9 from 6 balls ...... love it

CSK has been the most consistent teams in this format. 2 times wineners, 2 times runners & once semifinalists & add to it, the champions trophy too. Why on earth some one would replace Dhoni. Some comments here seem to be purely based on hatred towards CSK sinmply because they are the true champions. Whilst our congratulations goes to KKR for their maiden title, we still are proud to be fans of CSK. CSK rocks. One behalf of all CSK supporters.

@m007averick what are you talking about in your comment?? I think you are referring to someone else. I said nothing about PWI or Ganguly.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2012, 0:18 GMT)

All of these Murali Vijay, Raina,Dhoni,Bisla etc. are flat track bullies. Give them a little pace, bounce or swing, you will be able to judge their class. But after this sort of an electrifying IPL final we will forget that we have lost 8-0 previously against Eng and Aus, and will back these guys. Even the group of selectors will also pick players shining well in the ipl. Its no harm picking them, they are the best in the country. But making this sort of dead flat wicket just kills them. They never will be comfortable against good pace attack on a pitch which is sporting. I just don't know when will we start making sporting pitches?

No regrets what so ever. Still proud to be a CSK fan and love their resilience and team spirit. My hearty congrats for all KKR fans.

The best performers for KKR in this season : 1. Sunil Narine , 2. Gautam Gabhir, 3.Shakib Al Hasan. KKR need an Indian Fast Bowler as Lee's decade is over and it would give them a chance to play an extra foreign player.

Congrats to kkr for a superb season. The champion bengals did it through Shukla, Tiwary, Das and most of all, Shakib-Al-Hasan in the east. Go the tigers go.

1. Generally, people like SRT, Dravid, Kallis, MHussey, Badrinath, etc should not play long innings in a T20. They are ok to do a crisis fill-in. If they play till the end of the innings, their team will lose. Though they are good players, their strike rate will be like 120 and will always be far less than the team's strike rate, so the partner needs to score at 200+ strike rate to compensate for this. It can be argued that at one end these guys are 'steadying the ship', but in batting conditions, they should not even play. MHussey's stay at the crease kind of spoiled the show for CSK cutting off Dhoni/Bravo/AMorkle from batting resulting in 25 less runs for csk. Other reasons: 2. MSD's defensive field. Even at 3 balls 3 runs fielders wont come in????. 3. treating Amorkel as a regular bowler throughout. 4. As many people said already, no one knows what Jadeja is doing in the team other than fielding.

Kkr is a team with 11 players on the field, subs, reserves, coaches, medical staff and the owners and every single 1 of them must be congratulated for their had work. Hopefully next year kkr bring back Chris Gayle into the side.

Lovely nail biting T20 cricket. Really enjoyed the Bisla/Kallis stand! As an SA cricket follower, I enjoyed the young Indian talent mixed with experience from outside of India. Well done KKR and hats off to a never say die CSK. Liked Dhoni's composure as CSK captain. Disappointed with Gambhir's field placing which along with some poor fielding, relative to CSK, could have swung the game and could have made KKR's charge a bit easier. Look forward to IPL 2013 and some more exciting Indian young talent.

Rajat Bhatia is a silent hero for KKR. He has done a great job throughout this season. The wicket of Vijay today if not taken at that time, could have made a difference of another 30 runs.

Wel-done KKR.

Posted by m007averick on (May 27, 2012, 21:57 GMT)

@TheUltimateTruth If you say PWI lost because of a pathetic captain, did KKR win today due to super performance by their captain? And I don't have to repeat Gambhir's statement about the team and the captain.Stop hating Ganguly if PWI did not give a chance to Tamim.

Posted by   on (May 27, 2012, 21:56 GMT)

bisla -was a blessing in disguise for kkr as mccullum was not scoring quickly enough through out this ipl..kallis-at last proved his worth ..shakib-he was the inspiration tonight.he took that awsome catch and at least saved 20 runs for his team by doing that. in last over he conceeded only 8(2 of them came from hillarious misfields!),when 18 was easily possible on that stage!that was the game changing over.with bat,he has showed why he is the number 1 allrounder now. manoj-gave a reminder about his talent,bhatia-the unsung hero-these 5 were on their top today

Posted by borhans on (May 27, 2012, 21:54 GMT)

First of all congrats for the great win to KKR ,they showed that they really deserved it without any favor from luck .......As a Bangladeshi happy to see SAKIB AL HASAN ...giving only 8 runs in last over & his brilliant catch to get rid of murali vijay .....Bisla really show the way after Gambhir's departure .Without Bisla it would never possible for KKR(GANGULLY wrong again ,drop sakib take breet lee ,are you kidding me DADDU) to go at that target as most of their hard hitter are out of form(sakib again have to hold the middle order together after the first crash. he finished it well with tiwary.)..... & kallis he really showed his class with his patience & holding the innings .IF Bisla was the Terminator of Csk bowlers then kallis would be the Architect of the whole KKR's innings .hats off to kallis who is really the best all rounder of all time that world has produced ,sakib must be lucky to have him as he his as talented as kallis but lot to learn & long way to go

Awesome match, well played CSK but KKR had the better of you. I think this IPL is an indicator that if the change of captaincy has to happen in Indian cricket it has to go to Ganguly style Gauti who is aggressive and wants to dominate and look at opposition in the eye. Dhone is a great but its time for change. As regards to the match Bisla and Kallis take a bow. Shakib again proved his cool under pressure. Love you KKR and SRK and will miss the IPL on the cricinfo Commentary that I have followed for every match this season. well done guys.

Posted by   on (May 27, 2012, 21:47 GMT)

What an exciting game of Cricket. There was no clear winner right till the last over. Anyway, after Chennai put up the score of 190, I thought it will be tough for the KKR batsman's to make that much runs, batting second. But Bisla, Kallis, Shakib and Tiwary put up an excellent performance to bring the trophy home to Kolkata. Fortunes favors those who work hard and display determination to do something significant with their lives. Not sit behind a computer screen and criticize others. KKR showed great determination since last year, and it all culminated with the win in this years final. Lastly, at the end of the day the game of Cricket and it's fan was the winner because they will surely remember such an exciting match for a long time. Well done to CSK and Raina as well.

Successful Team makes a Successful Captain - Very True - Necessary, but not Sufficient condition. A Good Captain is also needed to leverage a Good Team to make it Successful.

See how DD has performed - a Good Team with an Aweful Captain (Sehwag), botched their chances of winning the Cup despite of consistent performance in League stage.

Congrats to KKR for winning the IPL. As a CSK fan, I feel sorry for my team especially after they scored 190 and still lost. Credit to Bisla for playing fearlessly and to Kallis for withstanding huge pressure until the end. KKR played well throughout this season and they deservedly won. I'm still proud of CSK. They didn't play well this season yet they still made it to the final. As an Indian, I'm proud of Gambhir. Hopefully he will help win many more games for India in the future.

To negate Narine, the usually slow turnig Chennai pitch was prepared to be a batting belter. Though it worked to a certain extent, our spin bowling was alas rendered ineffective too.. But full credit to Bisla and KKR, guess they deserved to win after such commanding performances in the group stages.. No worries in losing.. Congrats KKR!!

Under Sourav Ganguly, KKR was the only team that could never make it to the semi final of the IPL across first three editions with one time being bottom dwellers. Sourav had some brilliant players under him including Chris Gayle. Once Sourav was out of KKR, KKR made it to the playoffs and now in the second year, they are the champions. Now Sourav Ganguly captained Pune Warriors and they ended up at the bottom of the table. Are there any pointers to Sourav's captaincy here. Let us congratulate KKR now. The only other team equally worthy of the title win was DD. It would have been tasteless had CSK won this time also because their performance was not up to the mark for most part of the tournament and they should thank Mumbai Indians, Daredevils, Royal Challengers, and Kings XI to allowing them to go all the way to the Finals.

The most deserving team won. But I fail to understsand why people call CSK as lucky. Can those who call CSK as lucky say which team deserved to be in finals to play KKR? Was it Sehwag led DD who mess up their strategy or Bhajji led MI who came low in fair play or one man army RCB? CSK had 17 points and more RR than RCB. It was a great finals played by teams with best 2 Indian captains. In the end the team with more hunger won. Win for CSK would have been extremely boring. Fair result

There were two Bangladeshis in this IPL. Utilizing one his team goes at the top and for not utilizing one the other team goes at the bottom of the table. Congratz to KKR for their great achievement and it was really a fantastic team work by the kkr players to come out with the colors.

Congratulations to KKR first. I praise all their team members. Some of them couldn't perform well like Yousuf Pathan (but he actually took KKR to Final in the 1st qualifier). But in-fomr and ou-of-form sometime happens. Bisla was out for some matches and Kalis was not good in batting, but today they won the match. So all of their payers are great and I congratulate to all of them.

Though I did not beleive in either Bisla or Tiwary, but I'm glad they proved me wrong. A greatly satisfying victory, worth savoring. A splendid team effort. Great job by the bowlers thorughout the tournament, led by Narine and Shakib, Abdulla as well Kallis, Lee and Balaji. The only thing they need for the next season would be bolstering their middle order so that they don't have to carry extra baggage for the entire season; as with Pathan, who simply played due to lack of options, as well as get a couple of swing pacers; preferably one from India and another foreigner. If the Pak contingent is available then get one from them asap. Remember: middle order and pacer. One more; Kallis' test match temperament did prove worthy, and avoided a DD style meltdown. I had been harsh on him, and its time to doff my hat to the great man. On CSK: Dhoni - man you are the man of the big matches, and this time you've shown how to never count you out.You have earned much goodwill by your captainship.

Third consecutive IPL final that Dhoni has won the toss... Felt spooky about that since Dhoni isn't the luckiest guy with the toss. Nevertheless a great knock by Bisla, well supported by Kallis. I knew Bisla would do better than McCullum who has had a rough season. That amazing innings goes to show the quality of domestic talent India has got. There still are many more Bislas out there yet to be unearthed.

Congratulations to KKR for winning under pressure. MI and RCB could not do it but they did it after Gambhir got out very early and Naraine flopped. In the end it looks a fair result and will be considered most exciting finals so far. It would have been boring had CSK won this again but cannot stop admiring their resilience. They have won 2 times and in the 2 other they reached finals and lost only in last over. I am also happy that MI did not reach finals as I was disappointed due to their behaviour. Win and loss are part of game but should be played with spirit.

At start he was a bit shaky but soon transferred all uncertainties upon opposition. Shakib, a proven cool head and tiwary as well, It was a good performance after being smashed for a formidable total !!

Dhoni did'nt employed any 6th bowler, that was a major blunder.. Hilfenhaus was excellent though... Overall, a well deserved victory for Kolkata Night Riders and G. Gambhir

Thank You KKR. The panic playing from Sakib, Sukla and Pathan in the end was bit funny, even when the game was in our hand since 15th over... Nonetheless their contribution is good throughout the series.. Hats of to Kalis and Bisla... Bisla never realized that Gambhir was down like us who were freaking out because of Gambhir's wicket and he kept on playing attacking game.. Restricting Chennai to a small score was inevitable given their dangerous lineup and every batsman in form.. So Gambhir was also ready with more batsman... Good decision to play both Laxmi ratan Sukla and Manoj Tiwary... and one of them clicked at the right time... Bye Bye IPL.. Joy at the end.. Evening's going to be boring from tomorrow....

Superb catch taken by Shakib and wonderful batting from Bisla. I think Bisla's batting and Vijoy's out caught by Shakib through a super diving changed the game through a maiden winning. If Murali Vijoy could stay in the crease in most of the time then the score might be 230+. Because Vijoy did not want to give chance to KKR. Everybody of KKR played well.. and a very special thanks to Gambhir for his outstanding captaincy and thanks to Sunil Narine who helped KKR to be named as the first champion of IPL 2012. > From a Bangladeshi fan.

"I've always said this that a successful team makes a successful captain, and not a successful captain making a successful team" - Gautam Gambhir. A rightful dig at MS Dhoni, and the BCCI for taking away the vice-captaincy from him and handing it to a 23 year old who, agreed, is in good form.. but experience comes before a good patch... Great game, great batting by KKR, and a superb IPL coming to an end.. India can honestly breathe a little easy knowing that they have players like Bisla waiting in the wings to take up the call when given a chance. The BCCI should keep in mind that the IPL should not only be used as a money making machine, but also as the launching pad for our domestic players who otherwise would not get a chance to shine...

So happy for KKR, Gautam, Kallis and Shahrukh. Can't wipe the grin on my face. Go KKR.

Congratulations to KKR. They were the most consistent team this IPL; still had to hold their nerve today to pull this off. CSK fought well. I wish they had gotten more yorker/full length balls in during their innings. That would have made a difference. Dhoni said something about that at the presentation, which I didn't quite understand. Also, in the last over of CSK batting KKR's fuller length balls seemed to work for them and there was a surprising lack of urgency on the part of CSK batters to go for the boundaries. That made the difference.

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh................ sakib & kkr rocks............................yahhhh

Congrats KKR, deserving Champions. KKR crowd really deserve a championship, they give so much support to the team.

I think it was on the cards. 3 matches in 5 days is too much even for CSK. But we played well to get to the finals, just not our day especially with the ball.

Congrats again to KKR and supporters :)

What a Nail-biting victory of KKR, Special thanks to Bisla and Mr. cricket 'Kallis'. I wonder why Bisla didn't get enough opportunities in group matches!!!!! Tiwary and Shakib also did well at the end. Anyway, congrats KKR and best wishes for IPL 6.

Though i am CSK FAN, After seeing SRK young daughter's tears in loosing fear towards the end of chasing, I gave the cup to KKR TO be happy this year. Also enjoyed the SRK happiness. Let every team get at least once the CUP. Then only, THE MEANING OF IPL WILL BE happiness to all.." If CSK won it, this much of enjoyment will not be there. BISLA DONE WELL.

Well done KKR ! After all the debates and cries over the team selection; the seemingly unstoppable torrent of comments about Shakib from the ever emotional Bangladeshi fans; the debate over the inexplicable exclusion of Tamim ; some superhuman performances from Gayle ; the sinking of PWI under the leadership of Captain Pathetic; the eternal question of what actually Clarke & Fergusion had been picked for ( this question will travel around the stratosphere for another million years but never be answered) ; some crazy chases & some more crazy chokings ,the most exciting edition of IPL has finally come to a glorious end. Hats off to the players of both the teams for giving the viewers a cracker of a final. And yes, last but not the least, this lad , Shakib,he plays well,na?Bisla,we will never forget the blinder you played and yet being so down to earth. Take care Cricinfo, you have become an inseperable part of people like us,to whom,Cricket is another name of life.

Where is 10 Cr. worth player for CSK? Why he didn't bowl in last few matches??? He can't bat and bowl, why he should be in the team??? Dhoni continued playing with Murali Vijay, and he delivered in qualifying crucial match. But today when every bowlers gone from runs, why Dhoni didn't use our great one and only ALL ROUNDER for single over??? Becoz, he himself and everyone knows, what would have happen when he bowls single over. Instead of winning in the last over, KKR could have won in 18th over itself.

Definitely, our ALL ROUNDER is not a Murali Vijay or some one... Even if you give 100 chances also he will not perform. He is not that capable to play limited over cricket....

Great recovery by Bisla and Kallis and clear finishing by two bangla tiger Shakib and Tiwary. It was the script of almighty to give kolkata the champion title with the hand of two bengals.

Bisla and khallis (Iron man of cricket - best allround cricketer ever in the history of game) won it for KKR. Dhoni did n't lose , hilfenhaus did n't lose. Luck has to desert once in a while the lucky man dhoni. CSK played out of their skin. 2.3 million dollar jadeja did n't bat or did n't bowl. His catch worth 2.3 mil? may be if CSK won the game. hahaha. Gambhir should be next captain of india. I am tired of seeing dhoni. I want to see new faces in indian team.

Wonderful innings by Bisla and Kallis and great finish by Shakib and Manoj. The changes really worked. Congratulation to the New IPL champ KKR. You really deserved it.

Csk's bowling wasn't up to the mark....That's why they couldn't stop the flow of runs and had to face defeat. Personally, I'm a die-hard fan of CSK..but hats off to KKR to be able to play in such pressure! :)

Posted by Azad125 on (May 27, 2012, 19:47 GMT)

Bisla is the best for tonight game, I told early today that Lee will give too much run, they should give Sakib Al Hasan 4 overs so he don't give that much run like Lee did, Gambhir didn't do nothing as well Yousuf Pathan, Sakib & Abdullah should do 4 overs each, anyways KKR is the best & IPL Champion 2012
