Indian Premier League - 2nd match

Kolkata Knight Riders v Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils won by 8 wickets (with 5 balls remaining)

Irfan Pathan with the ball, Kallis and MCullum have walked out to bat.

Toss: Virender Sehwag has won the toss and the Delhi Daredevils will field first.

Sehwag says it is easier to chase in a shorter game. He adds it is difficult to play without some of the missing players.

Gambhir speaks about a shortened game like this to be a more exciting one.

The KKR skipper probably smiled more in that entire stretch than I have ever seen him do before.

10.05 pm Patience rewarded! The game is going to happen after all and it will be a 12-over-a-side beginning at 10.30 pm. Toss should happen any time soon now and if there is anyone who deserves any credit, it has to be the ground-staff.

9.45 pm: The stadium continues to remain packed, KKR owner Shah rukh Khan's still in his enclosure, the covers were (still) getting removed and Harsha Bhogale on air, says that there will be an inspection at 10 pm.

Players out in the middle, playing football. That is a sport which is played under rain and snow, so that can barely be a huge indicator.

"i stay 2 km away from eden gardens & its started drizzling again over here. Hope it gets off soon." Gets what off Vaibhav? The game or the rain?

Either way, cannot be good for the start of the game.

Ankit wants to have the best of both worlds: "Two trees fell infront of my hotel room in the last two days here in Ballygunge in South Kolkata. Enjoyed the weather though .. just hope the match doesnt get cancelled !!"

Sreekanth: "Well, atleast the newer stadiums seem to be built with good drainage systems. The new Pune Stadium is supposed to have a completely sand based outfield, that drains water really quick."

Drainage system aside too, we are all looking forward to seeing that new stadium, heard some good things about it.

9.10 pm: Some good news again, no more rain since the last update and a lot of covers are off. The not-so-good news is that the covers aren't totally off.

Umpires say that 50% of the covers are off but they will be able to make a decision only after all the covers are removed. The pitch, according to them, looks good, but all depends on the state of the outfield. And they repeat that over and over again in their interview with the commentator.

One particular picture did not augur too well. The covers were tilted and the water had spilled over, hope that does not prove to be a dampener.

Remember, 11.20 pm is the cut-off time.

mohanram seems to concur with me: "better to spend more money on grounds for better drainage and pitch quality rather then expending lot for ipl inagurations and other unwanted expenditure.till that the audience will be frustrated after getting match ticket."

Santhosh: "It is so good to see an Indian ground fully covered during rain. Last year in Bangalore, it was so frustrating to see only Pitch/square covered & out field getting damp resulting in calling off."

What would probably be even more ideal is a better drainage system at most grounds?

8.30 pm: Live pictures showing that rain has stopped but a lot of water on the covers. The Super Sopper is working fervently and it has until 11.20 pm to get the water off the ground. Anything after that and play will be called off.

neeraj: "i feel dd will be very happy with a point considering they don't have major players and could have lost the game."

They may not be the strongest without the likes of KP and MJ, but as they say about T20 cricket, you never know!

Anand: "after the dampner of an opening match yesterday, the last thing u wanted was damp weather!"

At least you had a Richard Levi entertaining the fans for the 35 balls he was there in the first game.

Sensrulz: "May be the rain does not want to see the best buddies competing each other."

I am sure Sehwag wants to even things out after losing this game to his best friend Gambhir last season!

Deep: "I m at Tollygunge. Its Thunder Storm and Rain Playing Cats N' Dogs.. And This Place Is Abt Half An Hour From Eden Gardens."

Not looking good then, although it does seems to have eased out a little as compared to 10 minutes ago.

8.00 pm: Still raining, and flash or two of lightning. So, no sign of the toss.

7.45 pm: It's still raining at the Eden Gardens and the entire ground is covered. Most of it anyway.

Till we have further updates, how about reading this preview for today's game.

7.35 pm: Delay in the toss because it is drizzling. Lot of wind too, which one hopes will blow the rain away.

7.20 pm: Best friends and brothers against each other, is one way of describing this contest between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils.

Of course, the match will be a lot more than just a Gautam Gambhir versus Virender Sehwag battle or Yusuf Pathan going up against Irfan Pathan - there is Jacques Kallis, Brendon McCullum and Sunil Narine to name a few for the home side and plethora of quick bowling options for the Daredevils!

Toss in 10 minutes.

7.10 pm: Hello and welcome to the coverage of the second game of this season's IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders host the Delhi Daredevils at the Eden Gardens.

The first game of this season's DLF IPL saw Mumbai Indians' Richard Levi biff the Chennai Super Kings bowlers away to a swashbuckling 50, en route an easy Mumbai Indians win. IPL fans will be hoping for a much closer game tonight.

Pathan to McCullum, no run, Little bit of movement into the bat and McCullum defends on the back-foot.

Kallis on strike now.

0.4

Pathan to Kallis, no run, Another one that shapes into the batsman and Kallis stands tall and drives it back to the bowler.

0.5

Pathan to Kallis, no run, Kept a bit low that one that pitched a tad short. Kallis defends but still to get off the mark.

0.6

Pathan to Kallis, FOUR, Pitched up but more vitally for Kallis, down the leg-side. Kallis needed no second invites and he flicks it away to the same region where McCullum got his boundary. Good start for KKR!

1.4

van der Merwe to McCullum, 1 wide, Down the leg-side and he leaves it alone. Wide called...

1.4

van der Merwe to McCullum, OUT, Gone! He tried to repeat that same shot that went for four. Not short and he still went on to the back-foot, tried to swing it away to the deep square-leg fence but missed, caught in front of the wickets.

BB McCullum lbw b van der Merwe 9 (8m 7b 2x4 0x6) SR: 128.57

Gautam Gambhir walks out with a very yellow-looking helmet.

1.5

van der Merwe to Gambhir, no run, Short of length, and turning into Gambhir, who defends well.

1.6

van der Merwe to Gambhir, 1 run, Goes down the track and chips it away to the leg-side for a run. End of a wicket-taking over from van der Merwe.

End of over 2 (6 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 15/1 (RR: 7.50)

Morne Morkel comes on now

2.1

Morkel to Gambhir, no run, Pacy ball, outside the off-stump and Gambhir goes for a swing. Misses completely. There is a slip in place for him.

2.2

Morkel to Gambhir, FOUR, Shot, did not try to hit it hard, and chipped the fullish ball over mid-on for a four.

2.3

Morkel to Gambhir, 1 run, Gives room again by going down the leg-side but Morkel shortens his length and only a single.

2.4

Morkel to Kallis, OUT, Yorker, bowled! South African bowls out another South African! It was pitched right up, Kallis tried to flick it away to the leg-side but missed and down went the timber.

JH Kallis b Morkel 4 (14m 4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Manoj Tiwary is in at four. Finally gets a game.

2.5

Morkel to Tiwary, OUT, Bowled again! Similar ball, pitched right up and Tiwary went back on his crease, trying to defend, could not get his bat down in time and the stumps get pegged back. Three down and Morkel's on a hat-trick.

MK Tiwary b Morkel 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Two wickets to yorkers for Morkel, one off an attacking stroke, another off a defensive. Cannot see any reason why he should not bowl another one!

2.6

Morkel to Pathan, 4 leg byes, yes, it is a yorker alright! But a tad misdirected, down the leg-side and Pathan got something on to it. It wasn't bat but it was enough for the ball to roll away for a four down the fine-leg fence.

End of over 3 (9 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 24/3 (RR: 8.00)
YK Pathan    0* (1b)      M Morkel    1-0-5-2
G Gambhir    6* (5b 1x4)      RE van der Merwe    1-0-6-1

Yadav to Gambhir, 1 run, Pitches it right up to the bat and Gambhir defends it to mid-off. Darts off to a quick one.

3.5

Yadav to Pathan, no run, Driven back but straight to the fielder.

3.6

Yadav to Pathan, OUT, Gone! That was a weird short to say the least, length ball and Pathan wanted to duck under it. The ball did not rise enough and all he did was to get a glove to that and the keeper did the rest!

YK Pathan c †Ojha b Yadav 0 (4m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 4 (7 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 31/4 (RR: 7.75)

4.1

Morkel to Gambhir, no run, Drives straight to the fielder in the covers.

The field can spread now with the Powerplay overs completed.

4.2

Morkel to Gambhir, 1 run, Nurdled it away to the leg-side by Gambhir for a single.

4.3

Morkel to Das, 2 runs, Edged away by Das and it goes racing away to the fence...well almost. Venugopal Rao dives at third-man and restricts it to only two. Well fielded by Rao.

4.4

Morkel to Das, no run, Short this time and the batsman allows it go through to the keeper.

4.5

Morkel to Das, no run, Another one short of a good length and the batsman had no chance of getting any bat there. Suddenly, he is pitching them short!

4.6

Morkel to Das, no run, Another one that is pitched on length, jags back into the batsman who stutters while padding it away to the slips.

End of over 5 (3 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 34/4 (RR: 6.80)
DB Das    2* (4b)      M Morkel    2-0-8-2
G Gambhir    13* (10b 2x4)      UT Yadav    1-0-6-1

Glen Maxwell comes on for some tweaks.

5.1

Maxwell to Gambhir, 1 run, Cut away to backward point for a single

5.2

Maxwell to Das, 1 wide, Lot of turn there for Maxwell and it goes down the leg-side for a wide.

Maxwell to Gambhir, no run, Turns away, but beaten

5.4

Maxwell to Gambhir, 1 run, Short and this time Gambhir gets some bat on that cut.

5.5

Maxwell to Das, 2 runs, Short again and he pulls hard, this time to deep mid-wicket. Yadav runs hard and flicks it back inside the arena and saves two.

5.6

Maxwell to Das, SIX, Pitched up and that is been smacked right out of the fence for the first six of the innings!

End of over 6 (12 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 46/4 (RR: 7.66)
DB Das    11* (7b 1x6)      GJ Maxwell    1-0-12-0
G Gambhir    15* (13b 2x4)      M Morkel    2-0-8-2

Morkel to bowl is third and hence, his last over.

6.1

Morkel to Gambhir, 1 run, Pitched up but rather wide and Gambhir easily pushes it to the deep cover for a single

6.2

Morkel to Das, SIX, Six more! Where has he come from! Morkel tried a slower ball and Das swung it real hard, goes over long-on for a six!

6.3

Morkel to Das, 1 run, Played it on the off-side and runs away for a single. That was smart batting but Maxwell swooped down, got the ball and threw it down, all very quickly. Umpire calls for a review but he is just in.

6.4

Morkel to Gambhir, OUT, Bowled him! Morkel has another wicket, and it is a big one. Gambhir tried to run it down to the third-man but only got an inside-edge that found its way to the stumps. A bail went down and Gambhir goes to the pavilion.

G Gambhir b Morkel 16 (24m 15b 2x4 0x6) SR: 106.66

6.5

Morkel to Shukla, 1 run, OUT, Run-out! That is a silly one given the circumstances. Shukla pulled it away for an easy single but Das wanted a second. He ran, there never seemed any calling from them and he found himself at the same end as Shukla. Das has to follow his captain back.

DB Das run out 18 (13m 9b 0x4 2x6) SR: 200.00

6.6

Morkel to Bhatia, 1 run, Played away to the third-man for a single.

LR Shukla    1* (1b)      GJ Maxwell    1-0-12-0

The innings is only six overs old and they have lost six. This can happen sometimes in a very short game - the need to go after the bowling.

7.2

Nadeem to Bhatia, 1 run, Cut away for a single to sweeper.

7.5

Nadeem to Bhatia, 1 run, A tad short but turning away from the bat and played it away for a single to mid-wicket.

7.6

Nadeem to Shukla, 1 run, Up in the air as the attempt at hara-kiri continued. Luckily for Shukla it fell between long-on and long-off and the batsman survives.

End of over 8 (6 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 62/6 (RR: 7.75)
LR Shukla    5* (4b)      S Nadeem    1-0-6-0
R Bhatia    3* (4b)      M Morkel    3-0-18-3

8.1

van der Merwe to Shukla, no run, Tries to drive through the leg-side but misses the timing.

8.3

van der Merwe to Shukla, 2 runs, Pitched up again and drilled to the long-on. Morkel dives to his right and prevents it from rolling into the fence and they get a couple.

8.4

van der Merwe to Shukla, FOUR, Cut away to the cover fence for four! That was coming into the batsman, an attempt by the bowler to cramp him but he managed to get that cut going!

8.5

van der Merwe to Shukla, no run, This time he attempts a pull but misses it completely. Still 12 runs already off the over.

8.6

van der Merwe to Shukla, 1 run, Driven down the ground to long-on for a single.

End of over 9 (13 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 75/6 (RR: 8.33)

9.3

Nadeem to Bhatia, 1 run, Shortish and the batsman flicks it away to the deep mid-wicket region for a single

9.5

Nadeem to Bhatia, 1 run, Driven to long-on for a single.

9.6

Nadeem to Shukla, no run, Attempts a hoick but gets nothing substantial on it.

End of over 10 (10 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 85/6 (RR: 8.50)
LR Shukla    26* (14b 1x4 2x6)      S Nadeem    2-0-16-0
R Bhatia    5* (6b)      RE van der Merwe    2-0-19-1

Two overs to go. This is now a decent score after that horrid start.

10.1

Yadav to Bhatia, 1 run, Yorker length and drilled well to the long-on region for a single.

10.2

Yadav to Shukla, no run, Swings at the short ball and he misses it completely.

10.3

Yadav to Shukla, no run, Outside the off-stump and he tried to free the arms. Misses again!

10.4

Yadav to Shukla, OUT, Gone this time! Caught at long-on, it was a good length ball but Shukla failed to gauge it too well and did not get the meat of the bat. The mistimed shot went only up to the long-on fielder who takes it comfortably.

LR Shukla c Nagar b Yadav 26 (15m 17b 1x4 2x6) SR: 152.94

Lee walks out.

10.5

Yadav to Bhatia, 1 run, Fullish ball on the off-stump and that is a single drilled to the sweeper fence.

10.6

Yadav to Lee, 1 run, Well-bowled to end a superb over. Pitched up to the bat and Lee almost looked uncertain whether to go forward or back, whether to defend or smash. In the end, the drive gets him a single.

End of over 11 (3 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 88/7 (RR: 8.00)
B Lee    1* (1b)      UT Yadav    2-0-9-2

R Bhatia st †Ojha b van der Merwe 7 (16m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 77.77

11.3

van der Merwe to Iqbal Abdulla, 1 run, Pitched on the leg stump, up to the bat and Abdulla drives it to long-on.

11.4

van der Merwe to Lee, SIX, Maximum! Finally they get one off a full-toss! Smacks it over long-off for the six after the batsmen before him had missed out on aplenty.

11.5

van der Merwe to Lee, no run, Had the chance to go again, it was not pitched right up but he missed it.

11.6

van der Merwe to Lee, 1 run, OUT, Gone, run-out! Super piece of work from Umesh Yadav. It was driven by Lee to the deep square-leg and the batsmen went for a second. Yadav got the direct hit from that region and Lee was caught way, way short!

B Lee run out 9 (5m 5b 0x4 1x6) SR: 180.00

Kolkata have ended on 97/9 in their 12 overs, not quite bowled out as some of you pointed out but close all the same. Still it is not a bad total by any stretch and the Knight Riders will still think they are in it. Back in 10 minutes with the chase.
