Indian Premier League - 16th match

Pune Warriors v Chennai Super Kings

Pune Warriors won by 7 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)

Murali Vijay and Faff du Plessis will open the innings with a Pune spinner to take the new ball, Murali Kartik.

Toss: MS Dhoni has won the toss and Chennai Super Kings will bat first. He is not sure how the wicket will behave. Says that the previous win lifted the side's morale, the players were thrilled.

Two changes for the Chennai Super Kings, Nuwan Kulasekara and Yo Mahesh have been given a chance. Doug Bollinger sits out, as does Shadab Jakati.

Ganguly says he would have batted first too. Murali Kartik has come back into the side in place of Manish Pandey.

It is a different pitch from what was used in the previous game here.

7.20 pm Chennai Super Kings came back from the dead in the previous game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore to make it two wins in four games. Pune won their first two, but batted poorly on a grass-filled Mohali pitch against Kings XI Punjab last game to lose their first match of the tournament. As cliches go then, all to play for in this game!

Prabath: "Manish Pandey did well for RCB while batting at the top. Now he is being under-used by being sent at 6 or 7. As soon as he failed in a couple of games, he is dropped. I am sure that he would have featured in any T20 team."

Tamim Iqbal's absence continues to baffle his fans. Sak: "Pune warriors should have included Tamim Iqbal on their playing eleven today. May be the team selection committee did not watch his recent performance in the Asia Cup (grin)!"

Angelo Mathews comes in.

6.1

Mathews to Vijay, OUT, flicked away to the leg-side and it is an easy catch to the deep square fielder. Murali Vijay has failed yet again this season.

M Vijay c Dinda b Mathews 8 (24m 11b 0x4 0x6) SR: 72.72

Not many happy fans it seems today. Umesh: "I cant understand, why Bollinger is dropped. He bowled a great last over vs RCB, one of the reason for CSKs victory."

Think Murali Vijay should have been dropped today?

7.1

Samuels to Raina, 1 run, short of length, turning a little away from the left-hander, punched down the track for a single.

SK Raina    4* (7b)      AD Mathews    1-0-6-1

8.1

Mathews to Raina, FOUR, outside the off-stump and edged away on the rise, that goes through the lightning quick outfield for a four.

8.2

Mathews to Raina, FOUR, shot! Punched away by Raina to the left of extra-cover and beats the long-off fielder. That is supremely well-timed.

Karan Mamgain: "I disagree, Prabhat. In fact, even for RCB, he was dropped during the second half of the 2010 season due to his abysmal form following a stellar knock against KXIP, in which RCB chased a high total. In fact, he hasn't done anything significant in the IPL ever since. Even in the last season, where he was provided ample opportunities to open and play at one down, he didn't cash in, and hence - rightly so - was dropped."

8.3

Mathews to Raina, 1 run, defended back to the right of the bowler, who was going in the opposite direction and fails to get down to the ball.

8.4

Mathews to du Plessis, 1 run, slower on, down the leg-side and du Plessis plays it away to long-on, wanted a second but Raina sends him back.

Time-Out at Pune.

9.1

Sharma to du Plessis, OUT, shorter one and du Plessis tries to use his feet again, there was extra bounce and he seemed to be beaten for pace as well. Uthappa whips off the bails with the batsman well short.

F du Plessis st †Uthappa b Sharma 43 (40m 33b 5x4 2x6) SR: 130.30

MS Dhoni has walked out to the centre.

9.2

Sharma to Dhoni, 1 run, shortish ball, and Dhoni plays a wristy drive to the off-side, sweeper fields.

9.3

Sharma to Raina, 1 run, shorter in length and Raina nudges it away to the deep square region. Raina wanted a second but Dhoni refuses and rightly.

9.4

Sharma to Dhoni, 1 run, shorter yet again and he gets some more bounce from it, Dhoni punches it off the back-foot for a single.

9.5

Sharma to Raina, 1 run, short yet again and he had the time to pull it, it came on quicker however, and the pulls goes only to the fielder for a run.

10.4

Dinda to Raina, (no ball) 1 run, on the leg-stump and Raina flicks it away to the deep square-leg. Front-foot no-ball, Free Hit coming up.

10.4

10.5

Dinda to Raina, 1 leg bye, outside the leg-stump and Raina wanted to pull it away, but it comes on quicker and hits Raina's pads.

10.6

Dinda to Dhoni, (no ball) 1 run, another no-ball, this was a slower one, seems to have used up more effort to bowl that slower one! This time Raina gets the strike...can he make it count.

Dinda is a tad frustrated, did not like the Nehra dive and has then bowled two no-balls since then.

10.6

Dinda to Raina, 1 run, yorker length on the legs of Raina who flicks it away but does not get the height on it and they get only a single to deep mid-wicket.

End of over 11 (13 runs) Chennai Super Kings 84/2 (RR: 7.63)

11.3

Sharma to Raina, OUT, pitched right up and Raina has timed it well, but not well enough to clear the long-on, Steven Smith stretches high up and plucks it rather easily! He looked good till the time he was at the crease but again departs after a start.

SK Raina c Smith b Sharma 20 (30m 19b 2x4 0x6) SR: 105.26

11.4

Phil: "This is actually very clever bowling by Pune - they've read this wicket well and haven't allowed two pace bowlers to bowl together. The slowies have stopped the CSK batsmen from getting the run rate up, and with some success too."

13.1

Sundar: "@Phil : On the contrary, a RR of close to 7.5 in the first 13 overs is way too much. With CSK's batting, they can really hurt Pune in this one. I see at least 170 being scored and Pune cannot chase that with their batting."

Jadeja has begun really well here. Dhoni, on the other hand, is getting a bit of a treatment on his hamstring.

14.1

Samuels to Jadeja, no run, quick down the leg-side and Jadeja tries to work it away, hits the pad.

14.2

Samuels to Jadeja, 1 run, down the leg-side and it is quicker one down the leg-side.

15.6

Nehra to Jadeja, FOUR, short ball and Jadeja swings the bat at it, takes the top-edge and flies over the wicket-keeper for a four. Nehra is an unhappy man, gesturing his hands around at his captain and the fielders.

End of over 16 (11 runs) Chennai Super Kings 125/3 (RR: 7.81)

Incidentally, Samuels in his previous over, was bowling at speeds around 120 km/hr. Hmmm...

16.1

Dinda to Dhoni, 1 run, full-toss and Dhoni has bludgeoned it back, bu Smith runs from long-on and prevents the second.

16.2

Dinda to Jadeja, 1 run, full-toss yet again and Jadeja drives in the same area of the ground, the long-off, where Smith fields and there is a single.

16.3

Dinda to Dhoni, 1 run, slightly short of a full-toss, driven by Dhoni to extra-cover for a single. Good effort to restrict it to a single by Kartik.

16.4

Dinda to Jadeja, no run, goes down the track, gets an edge and goes on the bounce to the wicket-keeper. Then Uthappa throws it back, hits the stumps but Jadeja was just in.

16.5

Dinda to Jadeja, 1 run, Oooh! Missed! Needed a direct hit to get that wicket of Jadeja, who had played it to the leg-side to Dinda, but the bowler missed.

16.6

Dinda to Dhoni, no run, pitched up to the bat and Dhoni goes wham at that! But misses and that over costs Pune only four runs!

End of over 17 (4 runs) Chennai Super Kings 129/3 (RR: 7.58)

Pune have kept a check on the scoring rather well. But three crucial overs still to be bowled.

17.1

Samuels to Jadeja, 1 run, pitched up, 122.3 km/hr, and driven down to long-on.

17.2

Samuels to Dhoni, no run, pitched up yet again, 127 km/hr, dug out

17.3

Samuels to Dhoni, 2 runs, slightly slower, 100 km/hr, played away to the leg-side for a couple.

A 100 km/hr delivery from Samuels is usually his slower one.

17.4

Samuels to Dhoni, 1 run, full-toss, 122.3 km/hr, played away by Dhoni to mid-wicket for a single

17.5

Samuels to Jadeja, SIX, slower one and Jadeja has mowed it over long-on for a six! Wonder why Samuels even bothers bowling his slower ones when the quicker ones are so difficult to read and hit!

17.6

Samuels to Jadeja, 1 run, down the leg-side, 127 km/hr, back to bowling quick and played down to the long-on region for a single.

End of over 18 (11 runs) Chennai Super Kings 140/3 (RR: 7.77)

One of the heroes from the previous game, Albie Morkel has come out to the centre.

19.1

Nehra to Morkel, 1 run, on the middle-stump, in the block-hole and flicked away to the leg-side for a run.

19.2

Nehra to Jadeja, OUT, slower one and that is smashed up in the air, but for the second time in three balls, it gets a lot of height but fails to clear the long-on fielder. Well caught by Smith!

Nehra to Bravo, FOUR, full-toss and the outside edge goes through the wicket-keeper's gloves for a four! Good way to end the innings for Chennai but a good last over from Nehra.

155/5 is a decent score from Chennai on a pitch that looks pretty flat. Not too much turn and it is not slow by any stretch. Du Plessis and Jadeja got quick 40s to help Chennai get to this score, but the acceleration never came towards the end, although they did score 41 in the last five overs. Rahul Sharma bowled well for his couple of wickets.

Du Plessis has the Orange Cap now. Back in 10 with the chase.
