Indian Premier League - 37th match

Chennai Super Kings v Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab won by 7 runs

Super Kings are done huddling and taken the field. Kings XI are opening with Shaun Marsh today, he's batted at No. 3 in previous games. Mandeep Singh is Marsh's partner and will take strike, facing Nuwan Kulasekara, who is bowling from over the wicket. One slip in place.

3.55 pm Gareth: "When i used to lose my house keys my mother would always help by asking 'when was the last time you had them?' Using the same principle, I've built a time machine, set it to 2010, and am going to help Raina find his form!" Well you don't need to build your own, I'm sure there are one or two floating around. Five minutes to the start now.

Toss, 3.30 pm David Hussey is leading Kings XI again, so Adam Gilchrist hasn't recovered fully from his torn hamstrings.

Hussey's called correctly and Kings XI are batting. Super Kings have made one change to the XI that would have played the washed out game in Bangalore. They left out medium-pacer Yo Mahesh and brought back left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati. Dhoni said the change was prompted by the conditions in Chennai. Did I mention it was a steaming day? Humid to the extreme and barely a cloud in the sky.

Tom Moody on Twitter: "Roasting hot in Chennai only one player in sight, Gilly running some laps trying to overcome his double hamstring strain." That tweet was a while ago.

Super Kings: 1 S Badrinath, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 MS Dhoni(capt & wk), 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Wriddhiman Saha, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Shadab Jakati.

Word is that Punjab have left out Siddharth Chitnis and brought in Bipul Sharma. A spinner in for a medium-pacer. So both teams are expecting the pitch to turn and play slow.

Kings XI: 1 Nitin Saini (wk), 2 Mandeep Singh, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 David hussey (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Azhar Mahmood, 7 Piyush Chawla, 8 Bipul Sharma, 9 Bhargav Bhatt, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Parvinder Awana.

3.20 pm Good afternoon and welcome to our coverage of the first of two games on Saturday. It's a sweltering day in Chennai, where the Super Kings are taking on Kings XI Punjab at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Cue royalty jokes.

Super Kings are third in the points table, on nine points, and a win today will take them above Kolkata Knight Riders, who are second with nine points but a better net run rate. If Kings XI manage to beat Super Kings, I imagine the Knight Riders and Royal Challengers will want to buy them drinks. Kings XI are second last at the moment and definite underdogs today.

Knight Riders and Royal Challengers play later this evening, at Eden Gardens. So there could be some movement between Nos 2, 3 and 4 today ...

8.1

Ashwin to Mandeep Singh, OUT, Has Marsh been run out while backing up at the bowler's end? He has! Mandeep drove the ball hard and straight, back at Ashwin. The bowler bent down but didn't even get a proper hand on it, instead the ball deflected off his boot and hit the stumps. Marsh was out of his crease and lunged back to try and regain his ground. He was just short. Some might say that's unlucky, but if you back up too far, you're taking the risk. Ok, Ashwin might have got fingertips on it, but the deflection that caused it to hit the stumps was off the boot

Kulasekara to bowl the final over. Can Punjab get up to 160?

19.1

Kulasekara to Kumar, 2 runs, the first ball is a loose full toss outside off stump, Kumar slaps it off the back foot over cover, doesn't find the boundary though

Umesh: "Amazing, All the CSK fast bowlers are completing their quota of 4 overs while Jakati, Jadeja and Raina combined to bowl 4 overs in this spinner friendly wicket."

Kulasekara to Saini, 2 runs, Saini's moved across his stumps and chipped a length ball over short fine leg, not very well timed so Morkel chases it down

19.5

Kulasekara to Saini, OUT, caught and bowled! It was a slower delivery - 106 kph - on a good length and straight line. Saini slogged, aiming for deep midwicket, he ended up slicing the ball high in the air towards short midwicket. Kulasekara called for the catch and took it

19.6

Kulasekara to Kumar, 2 runs, Bravo sprints at full pelt towards his left from long-off and stretches out his right hand to swat the ball, preventing Kumar's flat hit from going over the extra cover boundary

5.40 pm Kings XI were on course for 170 when Mandeep and Miller were batting, but then lost their way, especially after Hussey was dismissed. 156 is not a terrible total on this pitch, though, but defending it will demand that the bowlers bowl extremely well.

Rohit: "Why do I see 3 stands empty and other stands full at the MA Chidambaram Stadium these days? Is there any renovation work going on?" There's an issue with that stand, I'm not sure exactly what, but some sort of an environmental problem. Perhaps not, it's to do with permissions for building those stands.
