Kolkata Knight Riders won by 47 runs

Brendon McCullum to take first strike. Zaheer with the ball...

7.30 pm, Toss Vettori calls it heads, the coin comes down tails and Gautam Gambhir has won the toss and decided to bat.

Gambhir says that there are two spinners in the side, including Iqbal Abdulla, who replaces L Balaji.

Vettori, incidentally, is back, after his injury concerns in the previous game, and he replaces Andrew McDonald in the playing 11.

Hello and welcome to the 38th game of the Indian Premier League this season. Royal Challengers Bangalore travel to the Eden Gardens to avenge their defeat at the hands of the Kolkata Knight Riders earlier.

I am Suneer Chowdhary and will take you to the end of this game at which point, we will be at the half-way stage in the tournament!

Incidentally, Kings XI Punjab have beaten the two time defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the opening game of the day by seven runs. Bit of a surprising defeat, when you think that it came in Chennai and given the difference in the points table between the two sides - before this game anyway!

0.1

Khan to McCullum, FOUR, short of length, tucked away to the leg-side and that has beaten the short fine-leg! They have brought in the fine-leg this early...

0.2

Khan to McCullum, no run, back of length yet again, not too much bounce, goes on to the back-foot and defends it back.

0.3

Khan to McCullum, no run, slower one, pitched short and it turns viciously away after pitching, through to the wicket-keeper

0.4

Khan to McCullum, 2 runs, on the pads and he nudges it away yet again, this time through square-leg for a couple

0.5

Khan to McCullum, 1 run, and a shortish ball yet again, goes on to the back-foot and towards the off-stump, nudged away for a single this time.

0.6

Khan to Gambhir, FOUR, cut away and that has gone all the way through point for a four! He was playing only his first delivery, Zaheer was coming round the wicket and Gambhir gets some width, placed well.

Zaheer's going to continue.

2.1

Khan to Gambhir, FOUR, Dropped! If he had caught that, it would have been a ripper! Gambhir got width again and went for a slash, the top-edge went to the left of Harshal Patel at third-man who ran and dived and caught it...before it popped out and went to the fence.

Gambhir having a talk with the umpire about some chirp from behind the stumps.

5.4

Appanna to Gambhir, FOUR, full-toss and hammered away through the deep square-leg region for a four. Poor ball, well hit.

And now the fielding team is not happy with the ball. It seems wet, probably because of the previous shot that ran into the covers outside the fence. The bowler is taking his time. And a lot of it.

5.5

Appanna to Gambhir, 1 run, pitched up and Gambhir comes down the track and drives it to long-on for a single.

5.6

Appanna to McCullum, no run, quicker, pitched right up to the bat and McCullum just about manages to dig it out.

Time-Out time.

6.1

Vinay Kumar to Gambhir, no run, goes down the track, gets an inside edge and narrowly misses the stumps. De Villiers dives to his right and stops it.

6.2

Vinay Kumar to Gambhir, FOUR, short and he has gone on to his back-foot and smacked it over the mid-wicket region for a four! This is too slow a pitch to be bowling such half-trackers...

6.6

Vinay Kumar to McCullum, FOUR, shortish yet again and for a change it is McCullum who gets into the act! Pulled away and goes through to the wide long-on region, should have been a couple but Zaheer Khan makes an absolute mess of it and it rolls over to the fence.

End of over 7 (9 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 55/0 (RR: 7.85)
BB McCullum    15* (21b 2x4)      R Vinay Kumar    2-0-16-0
G Gambhir    37* (21b 7x4)      KP Appanna    2-0-16-0

This is a rather quick start on a track where scores of 130 have been difficult to chase

7.1

Dilshan to Gambhir, FOUR, shortish, outside the off-stump and Gambhir has cut it away through the point region for a four! Races away to 41.

Some more problems with the ball. The towel's been used fervently here.

Dilshan to Gambhir, no run, tossed up and Gambhir comes down the pitch, drives but back to the bowler.

7.3

Dilshan to Gambhir, 1 run, played away gently to the leg-side for a single.

7.4

Dilshan to McCullum, FOUR, reverse swept away for a four! It was not actually a sweep, more of a short ball and he hit it with a reverse bat so to say.

...and the ball continues to remain everyone's cynosure of attention. Are they going to change it? Yes it does look like...the Bangalore bowlers were getting a tad cranky.

7.5

Dilshan to McCullum, no run, on the back-foot, tried to defend but hits the pads. Loud appeal from the bowler but it was hitting him outside the off-stump

7.6

Dilshan to McCullum, 1 run, short this time and flicked away to the deep fine-leg fielder for a single. 10 from that over.

End of over 8 (10 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 65/0 (RR: 8.12)

Appanna to Kallis, 1 run, bowled up to the batsman, driven stylishly to long off for a run

11.2

Appanna to Gambhir, 2 runs, missed! Run-out missed and that takes Gambhir to his half-century. 13th in the IPL. Taps it to the leg-side and took off, Kallis responded but he was far away, the throw was wide of the keeper.

End of over 12 (11 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 107/1 (RR: 8.91)

Dilshan to Gambhir, 1 run, uses his feet yet again and drills it through the covers for a single

12.4

Dilshan to Gambhir, FOUR, Dropped? Misfielded for sure and it rolls over! Tries to slog sweep, the slowness of the ball beats him, he still goes for the shot and it lands between the long-on and deep mid-wicket, Vinay Kumar dived to his left and it went through...difficult to call it dropped. Zaheer Khan should have fielded that one while covering Vinay Kumar but he does not bend down in time.

12.5

Dilshan to Gambhir, 1 run, cuts away, rather a cute shot, and they get a single.

12.6

Patel to Gambhir, 1 run, goes on the back foot and he plays it away to the short fine-leg for a single

13.5

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, goes down the track and plays it through the leg side. He is rotating the strike rather well.

End of over 14 (5 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 121/1 (RR: 8.64)

Time-Out time, at a good time for Gambhir, who was getting rather heated in that conversation with AB de Villiers.

Gambhir, if I recollect correctly, has been dropped thrice in this innings. Some have been difficult but he has taken full toll

14.1

Khan to Kallis, FOUR, round the wicket, width and Kallis goes for a cut, takes a top edge but goes through the slips and for a four!

14.6

Khan to Gambhir, SIX, short ball from Zaheer and Gambhir waits on it, and smacks India's lading bowler for a six over deep mid-wicket! The field on the off side was up in the circle and Gambhir still gets it over the leg side.

End of over 15 (13 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 134/1 (RR: 8.93)

15.6

Vettori to Kallis, no run, driven away to the covers but fielded well.

A 100 is definitely on the cards for Gambhir. 82 from 43.

16.1

Patel to Gambhir, 1 run, slower and shorter from Harshal and it is pulled away for a single

34 balls for the 50-run stand for the second wicket.

16.2

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, yorker length, one of the few that we have seen today and it is driven to long-on for a single.

16.3

Patel to Gambhir, SIX, what? Six again? It was a short ball alright and Gambhir was waiting for it too, but that hardly looked like it was from the meat of the bat, Gambhir gave it his full and it carries over deep square-leg

16.4

Patel to Gambhir, 1 run, outside the off stump, cut away to the off-side for a single

16.5

Patel to Kallis, SIX, Now that is off the middle, pitched right up to the bat and Kallis teed off from the spot, it has gone to over where the control room is...it was a big six alright.

And they seem to have lost the ball, so we will have a third ball for the innings.

16.6

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, good length and Kallis plays it away to the off side for a single.

Vinay Kumar to Kallis, 1 run, pitched right up to the bat and driven down the ground for a single

17.5

Vinay Kumar to Gambhir, no run, pitched right up to the bat and he can only manage to dab it away to point for a single

17.6

Vinay Kumar to Gambhir, 1 run, slower one and cut to point, there was no third-man in place and would have gone to the fence had Gayle not intervened.

33 runs in the three overs before this. Another 33 runs in the next two will take them to 200.

18.2

Khan to Kallis, SIX, And Kallis gets another straight six, over long-off in fact, pitched up and Kallis has dumped it over the fielder for a six.

18.3

Khan to Kallis, 1 run, pitched right up to the block-hole and Kallis can only defend to the off-side.

18.4

Khan to Gambhir, OUT, Oh oh! Gambhir went for the six over long-off, it was the right delivery to attempt it as well, pitched up with just the right amount of width but the timing went slightly off and that is caught at long-off. End of an excellent innings from the captain.

18.6

Khan to Kallis, no run, pitched right up, and driven back to the bowler, fielded by the bowler on his follow-through.

19.2

Vinay Kumar to Kallis, OUT, gone, caught! Finally they hold on to a good catch, but that is a strange shot coming from a batsman who has been hitting them so well in front of the wicket. Tries to paddle sweep it away, does not hit the middle of the bat and it has been caught at short fine-leg.

JH Kallis c Patel b Vinay Kumar 41 (43m 27b 1x4 3x6) SR: 151.85

19.5

Vinay Kumar to Tiwary, 1 run, slower, good length and he gives himself room, belts it through the covers for a single. Pathan's back.

What odds on a six this ball?

Vinay Kumar to Pathan, OUT, that is a full-toss and Pathan swings it away and that has been caught a few yards in front of the boundary at deep square-leg. Pathan waited for the umpire to call it a no-ball but he does not.

That has been an excellent effort from Kolkata to get to 190/4 in their 20 overs. Gautam Gambhir's 93 was the cornerstone, sandwiched between two 40s from Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis. Will not be too easy this chase, Gayle, AB de Villiers and co. notwithstanding.

End of over 20 (9 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 190/4
